MEMORIAL DAY MEMORIES

Monday, May 28th, 2007

In the 90’s, Memorial Day featured some of the most memorable playoff games and endings in NBA History. From Jordan’s series-tying 54 points against the Knicks in ‘93, to Reggie Miller’s game-winning fadeaway three versus the Bulls in ‘98, to Sean Elliott’s “Memorial Day Miracle” against the Blazers in ‘99, and finally the would-be game winners between the Magic and Pacers in ‘95 (my personal favorite - an unbelievable and ultimately controversial ending).

Did I miss any? Have there been any in recent years? Feel free to chime in. Before you do, make sure to check out these clips:

ODEN, DURANT LIKELY TO PLAY IN NORTHWEST

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

I love the Draft Lottery. It’s such good drama that my wife actually insisted on staying on ESPN than watching the end of the American Idol season finale.

It doesn’t matter if your team is in it or not, be honest - you chuckle (if not howl) when a team slips out of their projected position to a lower pick because someone else snuck in to one of the top three slots in the annual ping-pong ball gala.

This year, the losers were Memphis, Boston and Milwaukee (who had the three worst records this past season) with the Hawks, Blazers and SuperSonics beating the odds and sliding into top three picks, with Portland earning the right to select the first player in next month’s draft followed by Seattle.

Looks like Greg Oden and Kevin Durant will both be moving to the Northwest. The question is which city…

DRAFT LOTTERY TONIGHT

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

The NBA’s annual Draft Lottery takes place tonight in New Jersey at NBA Entertainment HQ. And all eyes will be on the Number 1 & 2 slots on the board as potential franchise saviors in the form of two college freshman await being selected in next month’s NBA Draft.

(For the record, Ernie Grunfeld has had to attend the lottery as a Wizards representative just once.)

The debate on whether college freshmen Greg Oden or Kevin Durant should go first in the draft infiltrated the Wizards locker room, and courtesy of John Mitchell of the Washington Times, we now know that Gilbert Arenas and several of his teammates would select Durant if they had the top pick, despite a near consensus from NBA observers that Oden will likely go number one.

What do you think? If you were an NBA general manager who would you select if you had the first overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft?

WHAT DO BIG SHOT ROB AND STEVE KERR HAVE IN COMMON?

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

This has absolutely nothing to do with the Wiz, but while I was watching (well…am watching, it’s half time), I was thinking how much I like Steve Kerr as a broadcaster and remembered the time he went nuts against the Mavericks (Game 6, 2003 Western Conference Finals) and hit four three pointers in the 4th quarter in his first postseason appearance that year with the Spurs. I learned the specifics of that game by checking out his “bio” at wikipedia.com and came across this little gem of NBA trivia:

“Steve Kerr and Robert Horry alternated NBA Championships for a decade, and combined to win 11 championships over a twelve-year period. Either Kerr or Horry was on the roster of every NBA Championship team from the 1993-94 season through the 2002-03 season. Kerr’s teams were winners in the NBA Finals in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2003. Horry’s teams were victorious in the NBA Finals in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005. Each won 3 titles playing for Phil Jackson-coached teams (the Lakers and Bulls), and every other championship with a team from Texas (the Spurs and Rockets).”

THOUGHTS ON THE PLAYOFFS

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

After an impressive (and at times dominating) playoff run the Warriors were eliminated last night in Utah. And the Bulls lived to play another game after avoiding a playoff sweep last weekend. Chicago trails the series 2-3. The East is rounded out by Cleveland’s 3-1 lead over the Nets, who look to avoid elimination tonight.

But the biggest news in The L concerned the suspensions of Robert Horry (two games), Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudamire (one game each) following the skirmish that happened in the final minute of Game 4 of the Suns-Spurs series.

So many questions: Who do you think will/want to win the Eastern Conference series? Caron thinks Detroit will head to the Finals - do you agree? And what about the Suns-Spurs situation - keeping in mind the rules of leaving the bench, do you agree with the league’s decision to suspend the three players was the right call?
