Thursday Practice Report
We just came out of Thursday’s practice and the mood seemed to be more upbeat after last night’s 92-75 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats. Today was the first full practice under new Head Coach Randy Wittman and although he said he was not happy about the current situation, he also said he believes that this team is better than what their record shows and wants to prove that.
We also saw new Assistant Coach Joe Connelly working with some of the Wizards big men on their post moves.
Connelly may be an unfamiliar name to some, but he is well known by many of the current Wizards players and has been specializing in player development for years. In fact, Connelly was here on the Verizon Center practice court less than 2 months ago working with players after the lockout ended and before training camp began.

We also heard from Nick Young before the team took off for Houston as he answered some questions about last night’s win and playing under a new Head Coach.
The Wizards will be looking to win two straight games for the first time this year when they play the Rockets tomorrow night in Houston at 8pm. You can watch the game on CSN, listen on 106.7 FM, or follow along with WashingtonWizards.com’s Live Chat which will be featured on the website.

Nick’s job is first and foremost to score. They don’t run plays where someone should be open for Nick to pass him the ball and get an assist. If Nick has 0 turnovers, that is a big plus for him considering all of the touches he gets in the course of the game.

Dray played a good game, but I have never seen someone have so many failed dunk attempts in one game since Shawn Bradley lol I also thought it was interesting that they played him about 20 consecutive minutes in the first half, it looked like they were trying to see if he would pass out lol
Javale was deserving of more playing time yesterday. I’m glad we didn’t extend him yet as it keeps our options open so that we A) don’t overpay or B) have the option to sign and trade to avoid overpaying. The play where he dished it off to NY after grabbing an offensive rebound was a huge step for him.
Rashard doesn’t really put the ball on the floor and isn’t a huge scoring threat anymore, therefore his minutes need to go to Booker and Singleton
Singleton had 5 steals!
Booker needs more minutes
Seraphin looked like he was gaining confidence and was aggressive around the rim on offense and defense.
Finally John Wall was efficient scoring, to bad he had 7 turnovers lol The play where he blocked a lay up and then raced downcourt to make a layup was amazing. If he can become an efficient player when we are a better team, plays like that during crunch time will be huge difference makers.
NY didn’t shoot 50% but neither do most guards. I think he also made some 3s which makes his true scoring percentage go up. I like that he is playing D and you can see it by how he is in foul trouble alot in games now. eventually refs will get used to him playing D and won’t call him for as many fouls. Speaking of fouls, you can chalk up a few of his missed FGs to non foul calls on layups.
People used to say Jarvis Hayes had the prettiest shot that never went in lol I feel that way about Jordan Crawford with passing lol
Jordan Crawford is the pretiest passer that never passes lol Although he had a few beauties last night. I feel like because he holds onto the ball so long that most of his passes end up in assists.
Jan Vesely has a great basketball IQ. He knows and understands spacing on the court and always moves without the ball. He is also a very good passer. The fact that he gets his hands up and active on D makes up for his lack of bulk that gets him pushed around. If he can ever get stronger he could be a dominate defender in the low post. I don’t know if anyone else noticed how many times he got knocked over by guards when he set picks. I look forward to watching his development.
We played some of our most unselfish basketball of the season last night and it was a great win.
We also played the worst team in the NBA lol Hopefully we can get a win at Houston tomorrow which would start to build some confidence. If we could actually get a 3 game winning streak going guys may start to believe in themselves more.

I like your assessment Babakism. I thought John Wall’s best play was when he turned the ball over on a bad pass and then raced the length of the court to prevent the layup at the other end. That’s one of the things I like about John, he really wants to win and he never quits. He just has to learn that he has teammates on the court with him.

To sum up this team, and Whittman kind of showed it, one would say that we have more “energy” guys this year. That is to say that the coach let thim play in spurts, regain strength and put them back out there. He also rewarded performers with more time.
This team still has to learn basic team ball…i.e. Nick, even if his job is to shoot, he has to recognize when two people are coming at him and get rid of the ball. He’s a bench player for now, and can be replaced easily. He has to make himself more valuable. Until then, he’s just someone with skills to make it to the pros, and thats it.
Dray, is a PF by height only. He reminds me of juwan howard a little, when he first came to DC. Can’t jump. It would be nice to have him on the block, but he can’t finish at the rim, but all else, he’s okay. He should only take the shot that’s available, and not be a primary shooter, do the other things.
Until Wall learns the half-court, another energy type guy, with great help defense, but can he lock down one on one, consistently.
Our energy guys (javale, vesely, singleton, booker) can not stay on the court a whole game, and if starters, you have to put your key guys around them. We don’t have “key” guys to start with them.
With disciplined basketball, they can win more than they lose. but to become a power, they need a few “takeover” guys. We have situational players, not play the whole game players, for now.

so basically, we are a running team, that no one should probably get more than 20/25 minutes, keep rotating them out and keeping the energy up, and pressure on.

Proof, that was interesting. Aren’t you happy? Wall played
about 26+ min. and Mack played 21+, more balanced… I
think Mack had more assists?
Randy did say players have to start working out and get
in shape.
I wonder how much the asthma affects JaVale.
With so many games, I think it’s better for the players to
rotate sooner and have more of them play, like at least 10.
I would think it would be better for the game as well.

what was i sad about? i just called it the way i saw it. Whittman pretty much had the team figured out and played it that way.
LUCKILY they were playing a team that pretty much had nothing to offer except good defense. The key will be our on the court IQ….Will that get better?

I’d really like to have Eric Gordon here. I feel as though he is underrated, and playing in a bad situation right now (a place he doesn’t want to be).
Him and John would make up a very athletic, young, and tough back court. They could also be a very solid defending back court as well.
But does Gordon want to come here? I think we should at least try to find out.

Here’s to a good game tonight. I hope that we cont. to play with energy and heart tonight. I liked the rotations that where played and I’m for a running team. Eric Gordon, yes please I would like to have him and Wall, and McGee, Booker, Singleton and Vesely!
