Well, if we lose, it helps our draft position, if we win, we beat a top 3 team in the east. Win/Win!

But I’ll probably be happy with a hard fought loss, as it shows what we want from the players, and helps our odds in the lottery.

I guess we can almost begin talking about next season. We now have a fairly solid 1 and 2 (Wall and Crawford). Also, I am still a fan of having Nick at the 3. Let’s all remember that Nick can shoot and his defense is now much better. Nick spreads the floor and has now gotten to the point of drawing double teams. Having Nick in the lineup opens up the paint more for Wall and Crawford, and the guys down low (whoever that may end up being). If more focus will now be on Wall and Crawford, Nick will have plenty of open shots that can burn an opposing team. He is a legit 3-point shooter, and those are hard to come by these days.

As for the 4 and 5 spots, these are spots that IMO can still be upgraded. Although Dray and McGee have played better the last few games, their defense still bothers me. My position is that both players are good backups and would sure up the bench, along with Trevor Booker. These two spots are now our biggest needs. If I were Ted and Ernie, I would spend the money there for legitimate veteran starters.

I love the way everyone seems to want to keep all the players on a team that has won 22 games, and at the same time everyone is optimistic about next year!

I also love the way everyone thinks we are so much better now than before we traded Kirk Hinrich for Jordan Crawford (a raw rookie shooting 40% !!).

Wow. Hope springs eternal.

We’ll be better next year than we were this year — somewhat better. How much better depends on what happens in the draft, and even more depends on how quickly Wall, Booker and Crawford develop. And whether McGee continues to improve — and by how much. If all goes well in those areas, we might win more than 30 games.

The idea that there’s some *benefit* to keeping Nick Young amazes me. And while I certainly have enjoyed Jeffers’ energy and would love to have him in training camp, not much about our future success depends on him.

Meanwhile, unfortunately, a lockout looks a lot more likely than “next season”.

tom your boy is blowing up! You called it first! As far as keeping everyone goes, I do not think we should keep everyone but there are bright spots! I think we really need a vet. big man, however you know I would take D. Cousins if we could still him. I was reading somewhere today that K. Love will be a target after next year. I do not see that happening, we would have to give up our whole team for that!

Right now DR projects us to get Barnes if we pick #4 or Valanciunas if we pick #3. Then w/ the Hawks pick they have us choosing Jordan Hamilton and w/ #34 Iman Shumpert. If #33 it’s Jajuan Johnson.

I don’t really like Barnes — probably because I’ve not gotten stuck on the idea that he’s Calbert Cheaney junior (but just because he kind of looks like him:) ).

I haven’t seen Hamilton. Don’t like Johnson. Do like Iman Shumpert — another guard who does everything *extremely* well except shoot.

i think the mock draft sites make their mocks purely based on players getting picked in order of talent…

it’s not until after the draft lottery, the draft combine and once they start hearing rumors from teams, they factor in the “needs” for each team and match certain players with certain teams

I don’t get people who want to lose for better lottery
chances. Very happy with the win.

One thing these D-league guys have that we need to

The defensive tenacity was there and we even kept close with the rebounds. I understand that Boston didn’t want to play there Big 3 but the move may have backfired on them because they lost D.West. The player from the D-League I like most is Jefers. I think Jefers is the type of guy I want on my side in a tough hard fought game. Jefers isn’t more than 6’4” but his leaping ability is like no other his size in the nba and his heart is of a Lion!. I think he should definitely be on our summer league team. I feel Yi has to get stronger and with the tutelage of Gene Shaw he should be able to learn all the tricks of the big mans world! What I think we need next year is Talented Youth who have Huge Basketbal IQ and the Heart Of A Lion. We can do without the Jitters Next Season because we have already been Sucker Punched and once we regained our senses there no time to play games but only Time For Business!

These guys are becoming a lot of fun to watch. Great win against the Celtics lite. My favorite play had to be when Glenn Davis ran into Jeffers under the rim and Big Baby went sprawling.

Dayle the lottery was introduced so teams couldn’t intensionally lose to gain a higher draft pick. Losing gives you no particular advantage over the ping pong balls.

I’m sure John Wall is talking up the “company” line They told him if he didn’t say he liked Ted, Ernie, and Flip they threatened to trade him to the Wizards

@Tom…. Jeffers – “not much about our future success depends on him”. Maybe not, but, it will depend on a guy just like him if it isn’t him. Every team needs a Dominic McGuire, Jason Maxiel, Darvin Ham kinda player. We know what Jeffers can do… play hard and put up pretty good numbers every night. He will cost us slightly more than a half eaten bologna sandwich. I say keep him.

In the lottery, I know you’re not guaranteed a certain
spot but your odds are better the more losses you have.
If you read the blog, you know there are several bloggers who are in favor of losing to have better odds.
Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way, but every
game is meaningful to me whether we are going to the
playoffs or not. The reason you play is to win, IMO.

If you have the worst record you have a 25% chance of
getting the first pick, second worst a 19.9% chance, third a 15.6% chance and so on. After the first three
draft picks have been made, the rest of the picks are
in the reverse order of wins and losses.

Just like winning, losing can be contagious and carry over year after year. Winning at home is particularly a start. There are more than a hand full of bloggers and radio folks that believe the Wizards should have been losing out for abetter shot at a higher lottery pick. This does nothing more than teach young players how to accept and tolerate losing. Especially if you are bring back most of the same players next season! Win, Win Win baby…

Question??

If New York wins tonight vs. Chicago and tomorrow vs. Boston and Atlanta lose to the Bobcats, both their records will be the same. By the way they both split the season series.

How does this affect everything?
Playoffs: Atlanta is in the 5th position New York is in the 6th.

ESPN is already reporting a Playoff series with New York vs. Boston. It still seems to me that that can change.

If both teams have the same record how does that effect there pick in the draft? (Right now New York has the 17th and Atlanta has the 18th)

Does anyone know how that really works??

@ dayle — I’ve *never* said “so what” — never — about playing to win. What’s the point of the game if you don’t play to win?

And it’s *not* that I want a higher draft pick in the lottery — I want a better Wizards team!! One that will win many more games and, dare I say it, contend for a title. *That* and only that is what I want.

In the meantime, of course, I want to see a team that fights hard, competes, and is entertaining. The first 2/3 of this season, the blog here was *filled* with complaints because we weren’t winning, but I was still happy with the team because I could see we’d made good moves. I counseled patience.

Just as then, I counsel patience now too. We’ve done better in the “garbage time” part of the season, when nothing is at stake. But don’t mislead yourself into thinking that means we’ve become a better team. We haven’t — not yet.

You become a better team by by getting better players. No other way. We started that process in the last draft; we’ll continue it in the upcoming draft.

millie mill — last year we had the same record as the Kings; the pick order was decided by a coin toss. We lost (but were saved by the ping pong balls). Whoever lost the coin toss got the higher round 2 pick, btw.

Sorry Tom, I’ll keep my $20 and add it to next year’s contest.

We have to resign Jeffers, and never mind how tall he it, that he wasn’t drafted, etc. Tom says that there’s not a strong correlation between position in the draft and success in the league. It follows that there are a bunch of players who weren’t drafted that are better than many marginal NBA players.

We got better because Blatche got his enthusiasm back and McGee is finally on the way to becoming a complete player. But just as important is the addition of Crawford, Jeffers and Owens. Crawford deserves a real chance to replace Young as next year’s starter. Jeffers and Owens should be pencilled in as the guys to beat for reserve spots on next year’s roster.

Some might say so what 17th pick or 18th pick who cares. It can make a differance.

Rodney Stuckey got picked one pick ahead of Nick Young. Roy Hibbert got pick one pick ahead of JaVale McGee.

Whom you pick changes the look of your team — obviously! But historically, the 17th pick is not better than the 18th pick or worse than the 16th pick. GMs are *by no means* that good at ranking players.

Rodney Stuckey is nothing special, but he is *definitely* a better player than Nick Young. On the other hand, JaVale McGee has been a great deal more productive than Roy Hibbert this season — a lot!

Wait a minute. The teams that don’t make the playoffs vie for the top three lottery picks. After that draft order is in reverse order of how many games the teams won. There is only a coin toss in case of a tie.

We and 13 other teams will compete in the lottery. Those with worse records will have more ping pong balls than us. Let’s say the 3 winners all had better records than ours. And let’s say we win our last game and NJ and Sacramento lose, giving them identical records. Then let’s say we lose the coin flip with them. We would pick behind the three lottery winners, the three teams with worse records than ours (Cleveland, Toronto & Minnesota), and the two teams that finished with the same record as ours. So the worst we would pick would be 9th.

We should be rooting for Sacramento and NJ to win their last games.

for us to pick ninth, we would have to tie with the kings and pistons, lose the coin toss, and have 3 teams (all with 7th or worse odds of winning the lottery) going 1 2 and 3 in the lottery. I know our luck has been bad over the years, but let’s not get crazy here lol.

No no no. If we finish 5th, the worst we can do is pick 8th, and that would require all 3 top picks to go to teams ranked below us in the lottery. Could happen, but very unlikely.

At #5, we are more likely to leapfrog someone else stay where we are than to be leapfrogged — tho of course it could happen.

The Twolves, Cavs and Raptors look to have the 3 worst records sewn up (unless you think the Raptors are likely to beat Miami in their last game — I don’t).

The Kings close their season at home vs. the Lakers. Hope they win, but it doesn’t seem overly likely. If they do, then win or lose we are #4. If they don’t, then we’re tied w/ them if we win.

That’s how it turned out last year, and they won the coin toss, but the ping pong balls pushed us up to #1. A repeat of that would be good!

Neal — most people have Kyrie Irving (pg) and Derrick Williams (sf/pf) ranked as the top 2 players. After that it’s anybody’s guess. With Jones and Barnes pulling out, it seems likely that Kemba Walker will be in the top 5. The threat of a lockout makes European players look good, because they can be left where they are for another year — hence Kanter and Valenciunas.

After that… who knows?

I hope for two things… 1) we win out and beat the Cavs. 2) The Kings win.. Lakers have lost 5 in a row and is likely to be the Lakers lite as Boston was. It “could” happen?
