Game Day Charlotte
8:26 AM EDT….Dave Johnson checking in….Over the last two weeks we have gone into games wondering who is playing and who will score. That concern has been because of injuries, but on Friday John Wall’s one game suspension only added to the apprehension. Then it was welcome back Andray Blatche. After missing time with a shoulder injury, Blatche went from solid on Wednesday against the Miami Heat to simply spectacular. Beyond his career highs in points and rebounds, Blatche played with a tremendous amount of passion. Jordan Crawford, banged and bruised from his 39-point performance Wednesday, somehow had enough energy for a triple-double and the result was a very enjoyable Friday evening ….Here’s to more of the same tonight…THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor as we take you inside the game from Charlotte….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link at the top of the page. Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 6:00 PM….hope you can join us.
5:50 PM EDT…Dave and Glenn checking in…starters are in…Wizards will go with John Wall and Jordan Crawford at guards….JaVale McGee at center……Andray Blatche and Maurice Evans at forwards……Bobcats will go with DJ Augustin and Gerald henderson at guards,,,,Kwame Brown at center and Dante Cunningham and Boris Diaw at forwards…..Stpehen Jackson remains sidelined with a hamstring injury

Of the 30 teams, the Wiz are 23rd in payroll. Our time will come to compete for FA’s.
I agree with whoever said we should resign two of our FA’s: Jeffers and Young. That would give us 4 competent guards going into next year.
Ideally, we get a 3 with our first pick.
IMO we also need a veteran 1 or 5 with an excellent resume who is over the hill and cheap but can give us a veteran presence to go with Lewis.

denver is doing well because they have a ton of decent players.
we have a couple decent players and the rest are below average & NBDL.
@neal
i’m sorry, but jeffers is not a “competent” guard. his natural position was PF and yet he looks like he’s barely 6’3″. he’s listed at 6’5″ but he’s shorter than wall and crawford who are both 6’4″. he plays hard and that’s good, but on a good team it’d be a miracle if he sees more than 10 minutes in a game.

I bet a coach with a stronger hand and if lottery pick wasn’t in our vocab, would get different results out of the same players. I mean really, these are NBA caliber players (for the most part).
And what about Utah? they were winning before Sloan left. they stopped winning after he left and prior to the trade.
the point is, all of the blame isn’t on the players, coaches have just as much accountability as the players (well some do anyway)

I agree that coaches matter, in spite of what Tom says the stats say. With these young rich kids who have been idolized all their lives the most successful coaches are the ones who, through status, charisma, bearing or whatever, get the players committed to the program and playing hard.

Wow, I find it hilarious that people keep pointing at Flip and EG as the Wizards problem…I will guarantee that OKCity will fire their coach within two years. Coaching is overrated…the chemistry of the team is underrated cause it is more of a crap shoot with chemistry with peoplei and abilities. Miami Heat players without their big 3 has very good names but they would be talking about the lottery without that big 3.
Change the culture by way of the organization upholding the contracts that they sign and resist firing coaches and GM’s prior to the end of their contract.
Evan Turner is a very good player. He doesn’t play much but he could help Philly to win. Maybe Doug Collins knows something special about his players but the 76er’s arent better because of him. They have a better mix of players. Why Evan Turner is not part of that mix?

Sooooooo, the sixers become a better team and you wonder why Evan Turner isn’t an all-star? Maybe because he’s working his way into the system, rather than just throwing him into the system and saying the world revolves around him….seems like Doug’s way is working moreso than the wiz’s way.
I think the fans want to see wins, not a stockpile of top college players.
Comment from Neal
Time April 3, 2011 at 2:05 PM
arthritic, I was going by the Wiz’s having listed Jeffers as a guard/forward. You’re probably right about his not getting much playing time on a good team. But maybe that’s their loss. If we ignore his size and just look at his results he looks good. To be twice MVP in the D-League he must have a good offensive game. Can he shoot from the outside?

You do realize we are paying to see NBA basketball, not a collegiate all-star game in the NBA?
I would rather have a top pick sit back and learn for a minute, than listen to our PR person and our owner sell tickets by saying that we have a FUTURE star, “wait on it, wait on it”….however, we still waiting…lol Since, paying to go see the players does help pay for the players salaries

Hmmmmmmmm, JWall recently stated that he wanted to study DWade’s game and be like DWade, or something similar. Now, this kid has been playing a whole season, and he is still trying to determine his game or what he needs to do? What do the wiz need him to be? Rondo fed off the big three, then found his “niche”. This team needs veteran leadership YESTERDAY. This team needs a system YESTERDAY.

Actually I agree with proofofconcept with the exception that a coaching change is needed at this point. One year with young players does not define a coach. Young players are still learning their style of play for the NBA game. If the owner wants to build with the youngsters he should understand that the lack of experience will produce inconsistency and that firing the coach will do the same..

Which of these players would you rather build a franchise around?
Blake Griffin 57%
Russell Westbrook 19%
John Wall 11%
LaMarcus Aldridge 12%
It should actually be L.A., R.W., B.G., and then Wall based on team success, but I would actually have Griffin last since Wall is my favorite player.

if a coach has a proven system, i say get the players that fit the system. if a player doesn’t fit the system and cant function, or adjust to it, no matter how good the player is, success is hard to come by.
Get a system in place, then plug the pieces. What system do we have in place? what is each players role in that system? then start making changes. I’m not going to say the players suck. they are in the NBA, albeit the draft, dleague, snuck in the back door, etc. they are nbaers, do they fit the system? what is our system?

I love Mo Evans, but I don’t think we should take up two roster spots with guys that aren’t in our long-range plans at the same position (Lewis & Evans). Got to develop a young guy at that position. I’d rather see us get a veteran with Evan’s hustle and smarts at the 1 or 5.
I’m beginning to get a little optimistic about this team again, with the way Crawford, Blatche and McGee are playing.

Whenever the season winds down to an end, I find myself recalling seasons of the past both good and bad. Playing against the bobcats and Kwame Brown made me think that whatever all of us may think about Dray and Javale, we can all agree they are still leaps and bounds above our former number 1 overall pick. LOL I also like to compare Dray’s skillset to Webbers all the time and today I had flashbacks to everytime Webber fell on the ground and we had to worry his shoulder was popping out again. lol
I was ready to drive down to Cackalacki and sideswipe Kwame on his motorcycle on that play when he undercut Wall and didn’t even help him up. lol Just because you were a bust doesn’t mean gotta bust up John lol ok that was a bad joke lol
Another great effort by Dray! I wanna see him do it to Greg Monroe on tuesday!
Dray might also get a chance to go at a hungry Kevin Garnett on the last day of the season. Boston is still trying to muscle for more homecourt advantage in the playoffs. That would be a huge test for Dray.
@Tom if Cleveland wasn’t Drays best game, what was? The one against Denver last year? I’ve never seen a player go after offensive rebounds like that before. I know alot of other players have in the past, that’s just the best I’ve ever seen with *my eyes*
How confident is Jordan Crawford. This guy knows when we need a bucket and he finds a way to get it.
How Ironic would it be if Wall and Crawford end up being a succesful backcourt duo for years to come. So many people said Gil and Wall couldn’t play together but Crawford is basically the same kind of player.

Some random thoughts…
The tip in by Andray was the dagger. For a guy who bills himself as a finesse player he sure is punishing opponents down low these days.
It is hard to see how you keep Crawford out of the starting line-up next year. He and John are developing a real synergy between themselves. Not the least of which is that they both have a positive attitude, which Nick sometimes lacks.
This Wiz have been up since he arrived and the Hawks have been down. It will be a very interesting game when they play against one another in the next few days.
Mo has changed the character of this team. He is finally giving the Wiz some value out of the 3 position, which had been a joke all season long.
This Wiz team is fun to watch now.
It’s subtle, but it looks like that Javalle is finally cathing on how to play center. He looks less out of control on the defensive site of the court.
Charlotte is not a playoff team. Barnes had to play the best game of his career to make it somewhat close.
Comment from Babakism
Time April 3, 2011 at 9:38 PM
@Tom
I’m very happy to have that high second round pick and I understand it’s value. I just didn’t want to predict what we will get with it because it is unpredictable at the moment. Alot can change between now and the draft. I can see us getting another late 1st round pick from a team like the Lakers that doesn’t want to have a guaranteed contract on their books.
@Tom
I feel like Rashard Lewis will come back healthy next year and we will start him at the small forward spot. Rashard will have the same fire under him like Hinrich had this year. Rashard wants to play for a winning playoff team and knows that if he can showcase he still has something left in him, he can get traded just like Jamison. I think Rashard will give us a good veteran presence on the floor while helping to fill some of the scoring void. If we can trade him like we did Hinrich, great! If not, Harrison Barnes will start after the trade deadline
lol
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time April 3, 2011 at 11:38 PM
I have really liked us since “the trade”. We play a lot more upbeat bball these days. We are a fun team to watch.
Proofy… first of all good to have you back. Second Crawford does jack up a lot of shots but his percentage isn’t hateful. Tonight it was 50% and last game I think it was 47%. He does a lot more too. He gets highlight assists, he rebounds, and his defense isn’t bad (Why JaVale is looking better on the defensive side… Crawford doesn’t let his man penetrate).
Who is wearing #7 and what have they done with the “real” Andray Blatche? Can this be a sign of things to come after all these years in the league? Some guys are late bloomers I guess. If Andray continues to play like this I’m going to be on Gabbo’s bandwagon. What a plus if we could count on him for consistent games like this !
Dayle you ask a “very” loaded question lol. I’m not a stats guy so I get to speak more from the heart. I really think with John Wall and Jordan Crawford we have the start of a very good combination in the backcourt. With Andray’s recent consistent play and JaVale’s return to early season form that leaves the 3. Who knows? Will we resign Mo? Will Jeffers impress enough? Will we draft a good 3? I see a lot of good things happening for this team in a short period. That being said I think we will be a much improved team next season…. a lottery team is still a real possibility I’m afraid.

Not a great game, but again, there were lots of encouraging signs, and all in all, it’s fun to watch the Wiz play, which is something I haven’t been able to say much this season. Really don’t know what to say about Dray. This guy confuses me. My feeling is, the team should keep him and try to get some serious competition for the 4 spot. (Either by drafting or signing a free agent). Dray basically had the starting spot locked down in the beginning of this season, and I don’t know if that was a good thing. If that spot is not guaranteed next season, maybe having to work hard for it will bring out the best in him.

With so many people dropping out of this years draft, I think Ernie is definitely going to talk to Ted about trading down or trading for a future pick. Not saying its gonna happen, but if there isn’t a great guy to get with that first pick, trading it for a benefit could be the better decision imo. We will see I guess.
If Harrison does decide to stay, it would be a very wise decision for him.

@ gray — 3d pick is most likely where we start on ping pong ball day. If we go *up*, we’ll be able to get either Williams or Irving. I can’t imagine trading down in that case.
If we stay where we are or someone leapfrogs us, who knows? I don’t know who I like at the top of the draft beyond those two guys. And I definitely don’t know who’ll be interested enough to trade *up* that they’d give us value.

@ Babakism — Didn’t you think last night’s game by Dray was better than his Cleveland game, for example? He shot much more efficiently; he *dominated* the boards; he had 3 steals to only 1 turnover. He’s the main reason we won the game.
It’s *great* to see him playing so well. I’d love to see him close the season with six more strong performances in our last games.

2 quotes that irk me this morning
“I came out with a lot of effort,” Blatche said [after the Charlotte game]. “I wanted my teammates to follow off my energy.”
(Reading between the lines – is Andray saying he doesn’t come out with a lot of effort in other games? Blood pressure rising …)
- – -
Saunders said it’s important Blatche gets in better shape this summer. “I really believe if he can get his weight to the 260s, he can become a very dominant forward,” Saunders said.
(If Andray gets down to 260, he’ll go back to being an uber-finesse PF that shoots a lot of perimeter jumpers. If Andray stays fat, he’ll constantly be told he’s out of shape; but because of this fact, he is more willing to park his butt in the post.
I don’t know what to do with him anymore! Blood pressure boiling …)

The new DraftExpress mock draft has us taking:
#3 — Jonas Valanciunas
#19 — Bismack Biyombo
#33 — Bojan Bogdanovic
All right! That’s 3 guys all of whose names no one can pronounce!
Biyombo is 18 years old. He’s been playing grown up Spanish basketball for… 3 months (!! truth). And DR has him going 19th in the draft.
More on Bismack here: http://www.nbadraft.net/forum/bismark-biyombo. He’s a terrific prospect but 19th in the draft this year? At 18 years old and with this little history? Wow….

It’s Bismack’s world; the rest of us are just renting cubicles in it.
More seriously… just focus on Dray delivering strong performances the rest of the way this year. That might make it possible to trade him so he can make someone else’s blood pressure boil!

I don’t mind that Blatche is a finesse power forward, anymore than I minded Gilbert Arenas being a shooting point. It all comes down to are you good at it imo. at the end of last season, dray was still a finesse pf, but he was doing better that way than when he put on weight. If he can hit his jumper, and make those spin moves, yes he will be finesse, but he will do good with it imo. I’d like to see him lose some of that weight, and go back to being more quick and agile as well.
Tom, If we can get Williams I think we will get him as well. But there are situations where I think trading the pick will be considered, especially if we drop out of the top 3. We will see I guess, just my feeling on the issue.

@ gray — I agree 100% on the question whether we trade down in the draft. If we are out of the top 3 — maybe even top 2 — could happen.
I also agree about the question of “finesse” this or that. If you are a productive player, I don’t care how you accomplish it.

Did everyone read this article in the New Post by Peter Vecsey?
Van Gundy must’ve insisted Arenas look in the mirror, if not the tape of the Knicks’ game. It suddenly appears to have occurred to him he’s on the verge of blowing a pretty good life, if not a paycheck, though, I assume he remains fairly capable of that, too.
Yesterday, many moons overdue, Agent Zero announced a planned summer fling with celebrated trainer Tim Grover. That’s heartening news. I was starting to worry Smith was feeling pressured to plant arms in Arenas’ Amway Center locker.
If you’re wondering, the Arenas-Rashard Lewis swap saved Wizards owner Ted Leonsis roughly $30M. Lewis is on the books for two seasons, not three, next year’s $21.1M and $22.7M in 2012-13. However, sources say “just” $13.6M of that is guaranteed.
Leonsis also won’t have to lay out an additional $6.2M, the salary Mike Bibby forfeited next season for the freedom to leave and sign with the Heat.
You’d think Leonsis would be grateful to team president Ernie Grunfeld for the found funds. Think again. When Leonsis bought out the Pollin family and became the Wizards’ majority owner, I’m told he thought about changing leadership but couldn’t find an appealing replacement.
“Everyone likes to hire their own people and Leonsis is no different,” a league source said. “And it’s not as if the team’s record over the last few years or all the bozos Grunfeld brought in favor him staying.” Meaning, look for some of Leonsis’ savings to be used to pay off Grunfeld’s final year and the two remaining years owed coach Flip Saunders.

Very interesting. Thanks millie.
Personally, I think Grunfeld has about redeemed himself for the dependence on the big 3 with the trades he’s made. However, I can’t argue that he screwed up enough with the big 3 to warrant his departure if Leonsis thinks he knows someone better.
I do believe, however, that we have to signal to the league and its players that there’s a big change in Washington. It will take, as a minimum, a new coach IMO.

Overall, the Bleacher Report article says what many of us have been saying: it’s a total rebuild, play the kids and get more kids in the upcoming draft.
His suggestions of veterans to sign are interesting but not especially compelling, at least not to me. Except that maybe Dalembert is a very interesting idea. But someone will likely offer him more $$ than he’s worth to us at present.
