LOL, I think we both misinterpreted each other with your comments in previous thread. I wasn’t arguing with you; instead, I was interjecting some examples of PFs that like to play around the perimeter instead of the post. I should not have intruded your dialogue with Tom M.
Similarly to Orlando Magic, the Miami Heat bores me to death with how they play basketball. I don’t like teams where you have such a huge disparity between the talent level of star players and the rest of the guys. Because of this, I think Dwight Howard is league MVP. All his other teammates are trash and they’ve played like trash most of the year. You take Howard away and Orlando wins no more than 30.
Going back to thoughts of the Miami Heat; typically when Bosh is struggling in the previous game (like last night), the Spolestra gameplan is to force-feed Bosh early and often and then have LeBron and Wade integrate themselves back into the flow of the offense. I expect to see the same tonight. It could turn into another whistle-blowing fest for the refs (kinda like the Blake Griffin game where no Wizard “4″ can touch Blake without picking up a foul).
There is still a lot of standing around for the Heat players when one of their ball-handlers is trying to make a play. I wonder if Wall would be able to capitalize on their missed shots with transition offense (i.e., push the ball quick upcourt).
There is no need for the Wizards to play out of control in this game. The Heat can be defeated methodically. No Heatle is shooting well from the perimeter last night and we’ll see if Flip’s zone will cause more problems for them.

@ Fusey — to me, lacking *depth* at a position and lacking *talent* at that position are the same. Not sure what the difference could be, really?
I haven’t seen either Irving or Walker play enough to talk about either of them w/ much specificity. In the case of Irving, however, his numbers are better than any freshman pg since Chris Paul who is *by far* the best pg in the league, maybe the best *player* in the league altogether. Admittedly, Irving’s numbers are only on @300 minutes (he was out much of the season), but they are eye-popping all the same.
As to Walker, if the season ends w/ us having the 3d worst record the lowest we can pick will be 6th. In that position, he might be the guy for better or worse. I might try to trade down.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 30, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Trading down: If we are too low to get Irving or Williams, I wonder whether Cleveland would give us their #11 (from GS) and Hickson for say our #5, if that’s it, and Dray.
No I don’t love Hickson, but he’ll be an expiring contract and would get us out from under *4 more years* of Andray Blatche. He’s 2 years younger than Dray as well. Just a thought.
I kind of like Kawhi Leonard at #13, and I like Faried at our Hawks pick. Then maybe Irmin Shumpert in round 2 — he doesn’t shoot very well, so he’d fit right in!
But he does everything else great.

Wizards’ rookie Booker done for season with crack in foot

Leave a comment Getty Images
Trevor Booker had developed into a fun little surprise in Washington. The rookie out of Clemson dropped 26 and 13 on Toronto a couple weeks ago and had a double-double against Denver earlier in the week. Plus he was just fun pounding away inside, which seemed a good balance with John Wall.
And he’s done for the year, tweets Michael Lee of the Washington Post.
Flip Saunders said Trevor Booker is likely done for the season after MRI revealed a crack below his right foot.
I’m not sure what is below your foot, but that’s not the point. A foot injury at this point, on a team racking up as many lottery Ping-Pong balls as Washington, means there is no reason to bring him back. He’s off until next season, although he may not be golfing until his foot gets healed.
What this means for the Wizards is more Andray Blatche.

Jordan Crawford climbed up the ladder on the nba.com rookie-laddder to the 5th spot, it’s now: Griffin, Wall, Cousins, Monroe, Crawford, Fields…. but read for yourself: (nba.com)
Crawford has been so good, I’m willing to look past his poor shooting. In four games this week, he was 32-for-90 (35 percent) from the field and 6-for-28 on 3s, including a 1-for-10 night against the Jazz. Having said that, Crawford was one of the biggest reasons for a 100-95 win in Utah on Monday, hitting a jumper with 4.4 seconds left to force OT and help the Wizards get their second road win of the season. Crawford had 25 points and four big steals, capping off a four-game week in which he averaged 20.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 3.3 steals. Those are some gaudy numbers, regardless of the shooting percentages.

Isn’t it true that Crawford rarely played before he came
here? Maybe he just needs to settle down with more
playing time and his percentages will go up.

Jordan Crawford shot 46+% as a sophomore and 44% as a freshman. But he shot a fair number of threes (and shot them pretty well). His adjusted FG% was 50% as a freshman and a little better than that as a sophomore.
With the Wizards his biggest scoring problem has been shooting 18% on 3-point attempts. His 2pt FG% is not great but not awful (45.5%).
Crawford was also a pretty good rebounder for a guard in college (and with Atlanta in limited minutes). Not yet as a Wizard. Also needs to do a better job getting to the line.

I was sitting in class today, and my friend, bored like I, went on his laptop and looked at the rookie rankings.
I first saw, to no surprise, Blake, Wall, Cousins…
Then I saw a name I recognized: Jordan Crawford.
Crazy how quick he jumped up the ladder. We really stole this guy from Atlanta, I’m liking him more everyday. If he can raise his shooting percentages, he will wind up being a great steal for us. We keep saying we need a scorer, he can definitely fill that void given time to develop. And I like him more as a starter over Nick since he supplies things other than scoring as well, while Nick can’t seem to give you passing and rebounding.
As for Walker and Irving, I love Walker’s game, so much confidence and swagger. Didn’t really get to see much of Irving, but the hype around him is huge. Both I can see being good players in the league, although Walker will have a big adjustment coming into the league. But with Wall on the squad, I don’t think we should go for either one.
I think we should be looking at Barnes and Kanter right now, and I keep switching back and forth on which one I think we should go for. We could use a big body, but lately Javale has been playing great, but can he sustain it? While we have all written off Dray, could he come back healthy and strong like he was showing before he got injured? SF we have no starting option, other than Lewis who we don’t want here anyway, so that’s what turns me towards Barnes’, and while I think he is a bit of a project, I think he could turn into a great player in the league, and would compliment Wall perfectly imo. But, we do need a big man, and I think Kanter could be a force in this league too, so I would like him also. But I’m on the Harrison Barnes side right now.
If we do decide to draft a point guard, I think Nolan Smith with the Hawks pick would be a safe bet. I think he would be a good bench player behind Wall, and I like his attitude towards the game.

@ Phemy — “Crawford has been so good…”
No, he hasn’t really. Not yet. But he *looks good* and once his shot starts falling, which I feel certain it will, he will be contributor.
Yes, he did make a shot to put us into overtime. On the other hand, he was 5-16 prior to that shot.

like I said, that’s just a quoted text from nba.com! And I agree, his shooting % is really hurting us right now, even Jordan himself agreed to that and blamed one loss (against GS I think) on himself. But yeah, I think he’s looking better out there then Nick Young, love his energy, attacking the basket and always giving full effort!

Depth, to me, means number of available bodies for that position. Therefore, I do distinguish the difference between talent and depth even though they are intrinsically related.
When an announcer says “the Lakers are really deep” – to me it means they have so many guys that can come off the bench at any position (PG through C) and will help generate a positive contribution on the court.
Likewise, when an announcer says “the Wizards are weak at Center” – to me this means there is no one capable of playing Center legitimately after McGee (for example) because the available pool of guys are either (a) too small to play Center or (b) too inept to play Center.
Comment from bullets_fusion

@ dayle
Your comment on Jordan Crawford has been my point all along. He was stuck on the bench in Atlanta and now he’s gotten the green light in DC, he’s playing crazy – like his job/life depends on it.
THE REASON WHY JORDAN CRAWFORD SEEMS TO BE PLAYING OUT OF HIS MIND IS BECAUSE HE’S TRYING TO IMPRESS THE COACHING STAFF SO THAT HE’S WORTH SOMETHING TO THEM NEXT SEASON. IT IS LIKE AN AMERICAN IDOL AUDITION.
I don’t blame Crawford for what he is doing now – I would do the same thing if I was in his shoes.
In sports, I think the worst thing for a healthy athlete is to NOT PLAY and sit on the bench/sidelines and watch others play. Jordan Crawford is playing hard and he’s making tough shots, but he’s also going well beyond his means and I don’t like that right now. He’s developing a bad example for himself and for the team next season. Remember, Flip is trying to teach these young guys to get rid of bad habits and Crawford’s recent play, for the most part, is a repeat of bad habits.
Comment from gray16
Time March 30, 2011 at 5:02 PM
I think Crawford is shooting like crazy because it’s how he is used to playing. I think a lot of players are like that, Jimmer Fredette being a good example this year. He too will probably have to take a while to adjust to not taking a shots he is used to taking now.
If you were to ask Crawford about some of the shots he takes, I’m pretty sure he would say he just feels he can make those shots, and that it feels like a good shot to take at the time. This was ok when he was the main guy in college. Now he’s in the NBA with much more talented players, but due to still being the best scorer, he’s still given the green light to put up those shots he is used to putting up. What we need him to do is realize, even though he’s still probably our best scorer, he’s playing beside some other guys who can put the ball in the hoop well too.
We need guys like John, Javale, Book, etc. to learn to play off of Crawford, so when he doesn’t get a good look, they can make moves off the ball to get good shots for themselves and set themselves up off of him. If we can get the team to gel like that, it would help others as well as Crawford offensively. We already know Crawford can set up guys, its just a matter of learning his teammates, as well as his teammates learning him (and the league itself).
I think Crawford’s shot selection will improve over time, and his ability to hit shots will as well. I think if the rest of the guys can learn to play off of him, our offense will begin to look better each day.

@ Fusey — ok, I get it. But “will help generate a positive contribution on the court” is a matter of *talent*. So that’s how I see them as more or less the same.
Especially if thinking that a team is “deep” at a given position — in your sense of ‘having a lot of guys who play that position’ — means that you think you’re “set” at the spot.
So to me being “deep” at the 1, for example, means you have enough guys with enough talent (i.e. productivity) that you are in good shape at that spot. To me at least, we can’t say that about a single position.

@ dayle — Crawford having “a case of nerves”…? I don’t think so. I watched several video interviews with him before the draft last year; he is a very confident player.
And, Fusey, I don’t know why he’d be auditioning for next year either: his 2011-12 salary is guaranteed, and because of where he was picked the price for the next 2 years of options is so low that he’d have to be a *total* washout for them not to be picked up. Pretty much true of the qualifying offer level in his 5th year too.
I think he’s taking a lot of shots because the team needs him to take a lot of shots — only problem so far is he hasn’t been making them.

Nice to see this team play hard and (except for Yi) tough.
If I’m Nick, my knee is going to heal much faster. Otherwise he may wind up like Wally Pipp (look it up if you don’t get the reference). Unlike Nick, who sulks when things don’t go well, Jordan doesn’t give an inch at all.

I hope Trevor is ok. I cringe when I hear of a big man with a foot injury. Hardest thing for a big guy to overcome. I wish him the very best and hope he comes back stronger. The future isn’t looking too bad with John, Jordan, and Trevor.
I see some others are jumping on the bandwagon lol. I’ll repost one of mine…. “Who might be interested in Jeffers for cheap?” Put my name close to the top of the list
D-league MVP. Cool. He sure looks like the kind of player we are trying to rebuild around… scrappy, can shoot, defend, and rebound. I like him.
Hint to staff: When JaVale has an off night and Yi…. well is being Yi… give a few “extra” minutes to Seraphin. Yi isn’t even going to be here next season why the fascination of playing him? Seraphin needs court time and “now” is the optimal time to play him. Heck give him 40 a night. He needs to become a part of this team. Yi doesn’t

Thanks Arthritic you reminded me…
Z’s first AND second elbow to Wall’s face were both absolutely intensional. The “FIRST” elbow should have been called a foul (as it was obvious) and avoided all of the ensuing aftermath.
Wall should have kept his cool and not thrown the punch, but, that’s easy for me to say being a few years older than him and not being the one actually being elbowed in the face.
Wall should have gotten his money’s worth and decked Z? Can you say…. suspension? We lost him for tonight. We don’t need him to be out any more games this season. Court time… practice… next season.

Jordan Crawford – I have to admit, this guy has me excited! And I’m not talking about yesterdays 39 points. I just love watching him play, erratic as he may be at times. So energetic! This is what I wanted the Wiz to look like this season, and only Booker, Wall and Josh Howard (when he was playing) brought this energy on a consistent basis! I’m REALLY hoping JC will be able to kick some of the bad habits he has, but if he’ll able to figure that out, he can surely turn into a very special player for the Wiz.
Truthaboutit has a nice article on JC. True or not, it’s fun to read:

@ Jaba — yes, that was some good work on Ernie’s part. Essentially, for the rights to a 2006 round 2 pick, we got Seraphin, Crawford and about the 20th pick in the upcoming draft.
@ dayle — leaving aside the question of “nerves” what I really like best about Crawford, and what makes me start to feel it’s likely that he’s going to have a successful NBA career, is the confidence he exudes on the court. Last night he was asked to be our main scorer *and* run the team. He stepped right up and was obviously enjoying the challenge!
Jeffers showed a lot last night as well. I am hoping that when we sign him for the remainder of the year, we include a team option for next year.

A fun game to watch. We were in it for 46 minutes despite missing John and Trevor.

Comment from Jaba
Time March 31, 2011 at 9:19 AM
I agree, Tom, his confidence and determination are big reasons why I’m fascinated by Crawford. And I do believe this guy WANTS to be good, and just like Wall, he wants to win!
“Last night he was asked to be our main scorer *and* run the team. He stepped right up and was obviously enjoying the challenge!”
Absolutely. This needs to be understood by all those who think Crawford’s just a chucker. Flip is asking him to shoot and that is what he’s doing. It’ll be interesting to see if that green light will at least turn to orange once we’ll get some of our main players back healthy, (which might not be any earlier than next season), but the way the team looks right now, I don’t mind him being an agressive scorer. His field goal percentage will still improve, I’m sure! Hopefully his shot selection will also.
It really makes me happy when guys like Cartier and Jeffers have good games. Love rooting for the underdog, and I guess that qualifies me as a Wizards fan. If I had to decide which one to keep, right now it would have to be Jeffers. This guy really goes after the ball and hustles his butt off! In a way, his play reminds me a bit of Booker, maybe it’s because both are considered to be undersized and need to compensate by being energy guys. Cartier always tries to bring energy as well, however Jeffers is tougher – and that is what we need to be!

And, Fusey, I don’t know why he’d [J Crawford] be auditioning for next year either: his 2011-12 salary is guaranteed, and because of where he was picked the price for the next 2 years of options is so low that he’d have to be a *total* washout for them not to be picked up. Pretty much true of the qualifying offer level in his 5th year too.
- – -
I should have been more clear – I meant auditioning for a spot as a starter next season.
Seraphin made 1 mistake and his night was done in the 4th quarter. The game at that moment was 94-90 Miami and LeBron stole the ball from Seraphin. That was enough for Flip because the game was very winnable by the Wizards and he didn’t want to see any more “rookie” mistakes.

From what I’ve read on Zydrunas Ilgauskas, he’s a really nice man, on and off the court. Thus, it was just a “heat of the moment” (no pun intended) for Z’s scuffle with Wall. I don’t think there is anything personal about the incident. Wall overreacted and Z continued the instigation by saying a bunch of trash at Wall’s face.
Juwan Howard is another matter. This guy’s built a reputation for being an enforcer and thus it is easy for the refs to give him the ejection. Maybe Juwan hates hearing boos in DC everytime he’s back and he finds ways to “check himself out”.
Speaking of refs, I looked at the names of the crew because I’m at a loss for words after the game. These guys are VETERAN REFS THAT HAVE WORKED NBA FINALS GAMES! If you like “yo-yo refereeing”, this was the game to watch. To be fair, they should have called these fouls too
a) JaVale should have been ejected as well. He was the third person involved in the Z-Wall scuffle.
b) Erik Spolestra should have been assessed at least 1 technical foul for running onto the court multiple times while coaching his team. There are lines drawn on the sidelines and Coach Spo needs to stay close to these lines during the game. When you run out to the free throw line to yell instructions at your team while a game is going on at the other end of the court, that’s a T.
c) Flip Saunders should have been assessed a technical foul for his verbal confrontation with Juwan Howard during the scuffle. A reporter asked Flip what was discussed between them and Flip said
“We both just kind of asked where are we going to go out for dinner after the game,” Saunders said.
The lip readers tell me otherwise [McCarrick (bulletsforever) tweet]
Juwan Howard told Flip to “shut the f up” during the fracas.

Thanks to LeBron, everyone got a free chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-a.
Thanks to Reebok, everyone got a free zig-zag John Wall tshirt last night. First 10 people to tweet @reebok with the shirt on gets a free pair of zigzag shoes.
Thanks to the double ejections, I found out Hamady N’diaye can’t shoot free throws.
Thanks to Jeffers for being posterized by LeBron’s dunk; I think Crawford owes you a dinner because LeBron/Nike were looking for revenge at Jordan Crawford

I agree with most of what you stated but I don’t think McGee should have been ejected because he was trying to break up the scuffle between Z and Wall. I don’t know what Saunders said to Howard but apparently the refs did and didn’t eject Saunders. I could clearly read Howards words. BTW, I was at the game. I said the same thing about the Heat coach because he kept getting on the floor and nothing was call.
All and all the Wizards kids played a great game. The Heat had to work to get that game and also had help from the refs. I was especially pissed about the no call on James when he knocked down our player running down the court to make a dunk.

He’s gonna be a beast for us but why is everyone talking like we can’t have him and nick back cause I really think the wall, crawford, young, booker, mcgee lineup with time and chemistry can be really good and blatche should be first of the bench.I also don’t get why we play yi so much, what good is his offense if the one he’s guarding is almost guaranteed a huge night scoring and rebounding against him. Liked the fire from wall/mcgee lastnight cause the way the season has gone we should lead the the league in techs and ejections lol

@ dayle — John’s a rookie. I think he’s going to be very good. First step will be to be significantly better next year — essentially shoot a higher % and turn it over less.
Right now it takes him 15 shots to create 12.7 points. That won’t work.
Right now for every steal he gets, he turns the ball over 2.4 times. That won’t work either.
For these reasons, right now, his *overall* productivity ranks him as a below average NBA point guard. Some things are great; some are terrible. Fortunately the things that need to improve are among the easiest to improve. So lets see how he does.
Comment from Tom Mandel

@ datkid88 — why do you like all these players so much? Why are you so sure they be a “really good” lineup? Because we have won 18 games this year?
Especially, what makes you think Nick is good? What’s good about him exactly? Is his FG% good? No. Does he get to the line a lot? No. Does he rebound well? No. Assists? No.
So what do you like? He does have a good 3 point % — is that it?

Here’s what I see for next year:
I see us being a somewhat better team than this year, but not a playoff team by any means. Not unless some big, unforeseeable — and one could even say pretty much *impossible* — change happens. Impossible things don’t happen.
I see Howard and Yi gone. If either of them is w/ us, Ernie should be fired.
I also see Evans, Martin, Shakur and N’Diaye gone. It’s barely possible that Evans will be here at veteran minimum, but at his age he doesn’t have much left. It’s also barely possible that we give N’Diaye another year to develop. He’s 7′ tall.
I am pretty sure Young will be gone; I sure hope so. He’s better this year than last, but that doesn’t mean he’s good — despite scoring a lot of points.
Jeffers is a 25-year old marginal player (had a great night last night tho!). I hope he’ll get a shot, but it doesn’t affect much.
Those 8 guys don’t have much of a role in our future. Who does?
The 5 key young players who are our current core will be here I am sure: Wall, Booker, Crawford, McGee and Seraphin.
Assuming we use our 3 draft picks wisely, they are good enough that we should get 3 NBA-level rookies to add to that core.
Rashard will be with us, as he’s almost impossible to trade.
Dray will be on the trade block from now on; I don’t know who’d take him or what we could hope to get back for him. I assume he’ll be here, but I see no reason to expect much of a contribution from him.
That’s ten guys (4 2010 rookies, JaVale, 3 2011 rookies, RL and AB). Combined, they will cost us a bit more than $48m. We need 3-5 more. Assuming a salary cap (under a new CBA) of $55m, we’ll have @ $7m to pay them with.
That doesn’t buy any big-time FAs. Hence, we’re building on the talent of our young players; McGee and this year’s rookies have to improve, and we have to choose wisely in the draft.
That’s where we are.

One Question Tom. As you know I’m not a stats guy. In your John Wall post you compared his steals to turnovers. Isn’t it more widely accepted to compare “assists” to turnovers? His assist to turnover ratio has gotten better as the year has progressed. His turnovers have come down from his early season numbers and his assists have dropped slightly, but not enough to affect his positive assist to turnover ratio.
Datkid88 I refer you to Tom’s “here is what I see for next year post”. We will have at least 4 sophomores and 3 rookies with 3 to 5 spots left to fill. We might fill them with some undrafted players and/or 2nd year players. We have the potential to have 12 guys in the rookie/sophomore game next year
Boy are we gonna be young lol.

Ps… with John and Jordan being able to start next season as the starting back court (I assume) I think the familiarity they developed this season will help both increase their respective steals by being able to work better as a duo.

@dabeatkeeper yes I am. A big man with a foot injury is always serious. It’s times like these I really don’t like being a Wizard’s fan as the team remains very closed mouthed about injuries. I guess I’d rather have them be closed mouthed than blow a bunch of smoke. Either way we aren’t going to know until he either takes the court next season or he doesn’t. Yes I’m very concerned.

the best ratio to use is assist and steals to turnovers
@Tom
I don’t think Jeffers is any more athletic than Cartier Martin. I’d classify him as a slightly above average athlete(speed, agility, jumping) He does have great strength and length for his size. I credit Jeffers success to his desire and defensive form. I’ve 5-7 200 pounds but have defensively disrupted guys that could litterly jump over me like Vince Carter on the Frenchy. Great on ball defense is mostly about positioning, form, awareness and a desire. When I watch a pickup game from the sidelines I scout for the best most athletic player on the court to challenge myself with guarding once I come on. Jeffers looked like he deffinetly had an agenda guarding Wade and Lebron last night. No doubt he wanted to make an impression.
Jeffers is Mitchell Butler 2.0 lol
Nice to see Javale realizing big time blocks will get him the same highlight exposure as dunks. Sad that is what it takes lol but it’s better than nothing. Those blocks on Wade and Bosh succesively were spectacular.

@ grifonracing and babakism: The two factors that have the most effect on a team winning and losing are
1) scoring efficiency — determined by
:: true FG% (taking 3pt FGs into account),
:: how often you get to the line (most efficient place to score),
:: FT %
2. net possessions — how often you get the ball that *isn’t* after the other team scores. Determined by:
:: rebounds plus steals minus turnovers
Other things matter too of course, just not as much. Assists, blocks, not fouling, they’re all good. But scoring efficiency and net possessions mostly determine game results.
Given that, what would make assist to turnover ratio meaningful? Answer: nothing.

@ Tom M:
Regarding some items said in previous thread
a) With all of the team’s current injuries, I understand why you would question the team’s depth. I don’t think the team has a depth issue at most positions (besides center); I do agree with you that the team lacks talent at all positions.
b) Since you’re not a GM, you can’t be compared to Kahn. Aside from Kevin Love and maybe Michael Beasley, Kahn’s GM actions have sunk that franchise into an all-time low. With outlook projections souring quickly, business entities are doing crazy things to get some fans into the Target Center, like this
http://yfrog.com/h780fcbj
(note – this is not a donation effort like what the Wiz do from time to time)
c) Irving and Walker need the ball in his hands to be effective. So does John Wall. I don’t know how any combination of Wall + “uber-guard” would help the Wizards; unless, you have “uber-guard” come off the bench in relief of Wall as a 2nd unit. In that case, I’m ok with drafting Irving and/or Walker.
