Game Day Clippers

8:21 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in…..There are more players involved but this has become a marque game because it showcases two of the game’s  top rookies and the All-Star Slam Dunk contest finalists. John Wall and the Clippers’ Blake Griffin head the rookie class, while Griffin andJaVale McGee were the best at the All-Star dunk-fest. Yes, Griffin won the dunk contest, but there is debate about that among WIzards’ fans and we had some fun with that.  The Wizards have played well at home with big crowds on Saturday night (Spurs’ game the exception) and I think that’s what we are all looking for after Tuesday’s lackluster showing against the Bucks. Rashard Lewis has gone to get a second opinion on his right knee, but Josh Howard should be back from a hamstring injury. As we attack the final 19 games of the season, it is a time for the rookies and they are going to get their opportunity. The other night we had five rookies on the floor at one time, and Jordan Crawford emerged with a career high 22 poiints. I know from doing a season ticket-holder event with Trevor Booker that he has reached rock star status. In addition Kevin Seraphin overall has exceeded expectations this year, whileHamady N’Diaye is without question is eager.N’Diaye impressed Tuesday night when he blocked two shots on the same possession. Here’s to a good night on the BLOG and with the game THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor as we take you inside the game from Verizon Center….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE    link at the top of the page.  Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 7:00 PM….hope you can join us.

6:20 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in…Andray Blatche is out with a shoulder strain…..Nick Young is questionable with a sore knee…Rashard Lewis and Cartier Martin remianed sidelined…..Josh Howard will be back

6:50 PM …starting lineup could change…but Wizards likely will have John Wall and Nick Young at guards…JaVale McGee at center…and Trevor Booker and Maurice Evans  at forwards…Clippers will have Mo Williams and Randy Foye at guards….DeAndre Jordan at center…with Blake Griffin and Ryan Gomes at forwards

6:57 PM … One change in the starting lineup… Josh Howard playing instead of Maurice Evans

carried over:

tom,

i understand you love the wp48 numbers to judge people, problem is, building a team purely off of wp48 won’t equate to as many wins as you think. you have to factor in which skills each player does best…

so no, bringing in brewer wouldn’t increase our wins by 6. one of our main problems all season has been the inability to make shots, and thus score points. bringing in brewer is going to help that?….

nick young’s scoring and hot shooting nights have led to a lot of wins and close games for us this season. without it, there were a bunch of games we would’ve lost.

ronnie brewer on the other hand is not a great scorer or shooter, and could only play within the offense. replacing nick with him leaves blatche and wall having to shoot more, and neither has a reliable offensive game so…. where are those other points going to come from?

rebounding wise, when brewer was playing 32 minutes, his rebounds weren’t any better than they are now. now, either he just got a lot better at rebounding over the summer, or it’s a matter of situation (coming off the bench and needing to rebound more with the new team)

assist wise brewer does get more assists, but this is not because he’s a great passer or anything, it’s because that is one of his main jobs, to keep the ball moving. just simply passing the ball within the offense can add assists. but if you are looked at to score, you are going to take shots when you get the ball more often. now, nick young doesn’t look to pass very often and should get more assists, but brewer’s assists aren’t going to add anything to this team, especially with john handling the ball so much.

now comes the one area brewer would help, defensively. he is a better defensive player than nick, and would provide a push with that. and we would be a better defensive team with him on the team. that said, our lack of scoring without nick then becomes a worse problem, so we would most likely score less, so even if we held our opponents to less points, we still wouldn’t have the offense to overcome the opposing teams.

so even though brewer’s wp48 numbers say he would be better for this team, he’s in a much different role than nick, and right now our sg spot requires much more scoring than brewer could supply.

grifon,

remember, when we signed blatche, he was coming off a half of a season where he was playing very well. hindsight is 20/20, at the time, i believe all of us agreed with resigning blatche.

now, looking at how blatche has regressed, can you blame ernie for not jumping at the opportunity to sign nick. especially when nick has those off nights that make you wonder (can he maintain this for years to come).

then there’s the new cba. unless you have a superstar on your team, i don’t think anyone wants to resign players not knowing how the new cba will be formatted. doing so could lead you to overpaying even more than if you wait for other teams to make offer sheets.

Tom,

ok, i trust you on it, good call on blatche, but i don’t see how he played horribly enough for us not to extend his contract. but that’s just me.

as far as nick vs brewer:

i’m not saying we have won a lot of games, i’m saying we have won a lot the games (WE HAVE WON) because of nick’s scoring.

and i’m not saying rebounding hasn’t been a problem, but don’t act like brewer’s gonna increase that a whole lot, like i said, when he was getting heavy minutes, he was only getting 3.2 rpg. i know you are translating your per 40 minutes into “he would do this and that here” but that’s pure speculation, not fact.

what has been proven? that brewer has not been able to help teams with scoring as much as nick. and if you were to take all those shots nick has taken away, factor in brewer, now you have extra shots going to the rest of the players (wall, dray, thornton/whoever at the time, javale). none of those players has displayed the ability to hit a lot of shots this season, so are you telling me them getting even more shots is going to help?

so while even if brewer came in here and maintained the same wp48 with the same stats, those extra shots nick is taking go to other players, and bring their wp48 down. they you would say “well, it’s clearly not brewer’s fault, he’s playing better than nick was here” and completely ignore that nick was/is helping other’s wp48.

but i will admit, that last part is speculation by me as well. maybe if brewer was here, blatche would connect on more shots, or wall would be shooting better… or maybe blatche would shoot just as bad with more attempts, wall the same with less assists (and maybe even more to’s due to forcing it)… imo, i’m gonna choose the latter from what i’ve seen from brewer in utah and chicago…

This is Trevor Bookers biggest test so far. Yes he has played against Love and Garnett and some other awesome players this year, but I don’t believe he has started any games against that kind of competition. Baring foul trouble, Trevor should get to guard Blake Griffon for the majority of the minutes he plays.

Make us proud Trevor!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 12, 2011 at 6:40 PM

@ gray16 — well, of the course the whole thing is speculation and can only be, but I don’t see how you can go off of anything but the actual, real numbers guys really put up. If you think Nick has done something to help us win this year, you are entitled to your opinion — what can I say?

Where I’m sure we’d agree is that if Nick did the other stuff (even *some* pf the other stuff!) as well as he scores, he’d be a very good NBA player. Problem is… he doesn’t. In fact, other than scoring, there’s nothing he does well. He’s among the worst SGs in the league in assists, rebounds and steals. Overall, he’s in the bottom 20 SGs in the league, whereas Ronnie Brewer is in the top 10.

Oh, and if you think there is something wrong with that way of measuring, keep in mind that the same way of measuring ranks Wade, Kobe, Ginobili, Iguodala and Paul Peirce near the top, and it ranks Marco Bellinelli, Sonny Weems, Randy Foye, Chris Douglas-Roberts, and so forth down near the bottom.

Sounds right to me — not to you? If the bottom is where it puts Nick Young, it’s because that’s where he belongs. Special pleading won’t help him get out of there. Rebounds, assists and steals will.

Comment from ChenierFan
Time March 12, 2011 at 10:51 PM

Just to respond to Tom’s post at 6:41…I do think Andray’s minutes help the team…Andray, like it or not, is the best player on the Wiz. Granted, with their miserable record, that’s not saying much, but he and Nick are the only starters who can hold their own against any other player at their position.

Trevor…let’s get real…Trevor’s athleticism is fantastic, but his jumper makes Dom Mcguire look like Jerry West. Unless he gets some semblence of a mid-range shot, he’s destined for a 6 year career as a role player. I hope he does. If he does, he could be valuable

John gets schooled by the better point guards. He’ll have his day, though. Next year he will be much better. He’ll shoot 45% instead of whatever it is now (41%?) and the team will know how to use is gifts better. For example, when he takes off on the one-man fast break, someone will be there with him clearing traffic (Booker?)

Javelle, at this point in his career is a back-up center. Half the time he’s clueless out there.

The Wiz are on life support at the 3 position.

The bench has no consistent performers.

Finally, all these blogs can bust on Andray all they want but the fact of the matter is that the Wiz are 0-10 when Andray is out. They have managed to win games when other starters have been out. But not when Andray is out.

Everyone got their wish tonight and had Trevor start. It was not a pretty sight..was it?

The jury is still out on Jordan… He may become a serviceable backup 2-guard. He’s got some ability.

I suspect that next year Flip will have about 15 games to show improvement. Otherwise, Ernie will pull a Micheal Corleone (like with Fredo..get it?) and show him the door. And if the next coach also fails, Ernie will be out too.

There is no excuse for a team not to be competitive, even if they are in rebuilding mode. People pay lots of $$$ for tickets and they deserve a viable product.

Comment from gray16
Time March 12, 2011 at 10:52 PM

okay tom,

first, let me repeat my argument.

i said adding brewer in place of nick does not add 6 wins to the record, because he won’t be able to replace nick’s scoring, and no one else on the wizards will be able to replace that scoring, and the addition of brewer wouldn’t be enough in any other category to help that.

yes, nick would be better if he got more assists and rebounds. i’m not arguing against that.

i’m also not arguing that wp48 is a completely wrong measurement, i’m saying it doesn’t work in the way that you can add one player to a team, take out the other, and the wins difference from wp48 stats will just show up on the record…

wp48 only tells you how well a player is playing within his role. extreme example: if you take away kevin durant from the thunder, and add kevin love, will they get the extra wins that wp48 says love is producing?… no, because the thunder would lose their main scoring option, and those touches have to go to other player, who aren’t going to be able to replace it (neither is love).

ok, wp48 says those players are near the top, and those players are near the bottom, do i disagree, no. last time i checked, it also says kevin love is better than lebron james, kobe bryant, dwyane wade, kevin durant, and derrick rose. i DO disagree with that, in a big way.

in the end, my argument is this (one more time):

wizards – nick young + ronnie brewer =/= 6 more wins. no one on this team, nor brewer can replace that missing scoring. an extra rebound per game, and an extra assist a game is not going to make up for not having nick to go to for shots to add 6 wins to our record, no.

Comment from WE WANT A WINNER
Time March 12, 2011 at 11:31 PM

All I meant was what is the point of playing Wall 40+ minutes in blowouts. Give him some rest and don’t risk injuries. That was my point, if we are down 20 pts in the 4th we’re not coming back so you might as well put Shakur in.

Comment from Arthritic

@ChenierFan, Blatche does not hold his own at his position. He has been abused by Channing Frye, Ryan Anderson, and Jason Smith. Those are just a few average PFs off of the top of my head that he couldn’t handle. He is not our best player. He has an above average skill set with a below average work ethic.

I think Javales teammates question some of his actions. One of the clippers players had the ball and ran down court to shoot the ball, javale was the only one down there and made no attempt to play defense or block the shot. A timeout was called and as McGee was walking back to the bench, the rest of the teammates were all looking at him like why didn’t you do anything?? The one thing that I want to know is if he actually understands what he is doing out there or basketball in general. He is yelled at and talked to numerous times and still makes the same mistakes.

@Tom and Gray

Gray says that if we had Brewer instead of Nick that we wouldn’t have anyone else to fill Nicks Scoring which is correct

But what I think Tom is trying to say is that maybe we wouldn’t need to score as many points if we had Brewer because he would give us more possesions through his defense and also limit the opponents scoring.

I think building a culture of Defense is more important than scoring for the Wizards right now.

Here is a statement posted by someone on FB:

It’s not Flip’s fault. He’s shown before he’s a hell of a coach. Look what happens when players go elsewhere. They do great things, just look at the Wizards that went to the Mavericks. The players don’t want to play for the franchise – it’s not the coach’s fault.

Comment from Babakism
Time March 13, 2011 at 12:14 AM

@blueandgold that play had me off my couch screaming lol I feel like someone on the bench should have been doing the same, preferably a player and not a coach.

@Tom we are now 0-10 now without Dray this year

I have been very critical of Dray this year but he has played well the last 3 or 4 games making an effort to go stronger to the basket and shoot less jumpers. If he plays like that all of the time he is helpful to the team. When he plays no D and settles for jumpers and turns the ball over dribbling through traffic he is a detriment.

I’m sick of Javale. I think we have all finally gotten past his shock appeal. I very much enjoyed listening to the entire arena getting upset when he tried to dribble the ball upcourt tonight as opposed to the usual ooooooh’s and aaaaaaaah’s. I don’t care what his potential is anymore, I just want to see a real big man playing physical in the paint.

The main reason we lost tonight was probobly Javale getting killed in his matchup against Jordan

ChenierFan, this is your fault. I can’t leave you alone to battle the Blatche-haters.

I still read the Washington Wizards blog frequently. I stopped blogging here because I believe that the quality of the postings has spiraled down in the past year primarily due to new bloggers who don’t appear to know their hind side from the foul line when it comes to basketball. However, blogging has afforded all kinds of fools (I’m included) an opportunity to express themselves and therefore memorialize their stupidity.

While I swore off trading comments with the newbies, a while back I saw a post by Tom Mandel that claimed that Andray Blatche was the 3rd worst power forward in the NBA….Hello! For someone who claims statistical evidence for everything he writes, Tom M. is writing out of the wrong end of his anatomy!

The NBA lists 44 players as power forwards. Below is Andray Blatche’s ranking compared to all of the power forwards according to NBA statistics:

Scoring – 15th
Rebounds – 15th
FG% – 31st
Free Throw % – 10th
Assists – 11th
Steals – 2nd
Blocks – 16th
Turnovers – 40th

Yes, he has too many turnovers and, yes his FGA is bad. Both would improve with a coach who provides an offense that puts the players in the best position to succeed. However, even given those two negatives, to me it looks as though Andray Blatche is in the top 30 percent of NBA power forwards.

On the Wizards, he compares as follows:
Scoring – 2nd
Rebounds – 1st
FG% – 5th
Free Throw % – 5th
Assists – 2nd
Steals -2nd
Blocks – 2nd
Turnovers – 2nd (1st being worst)

As ChenierFan has pointed out, the Wizards have been able to win at least one game whenever any player except Andray was not available. Without Andray, the Wizards are now 0-10. Until he is able to return, they will remain 0 for.

I have seen every game this year. I have watched the Wizards PR machine working overtime to project John Wall in the best light. I have watched the home-team scorer attribute Wall’s turnovers to the phantom receivers. I have watched the home-team scorer give John Wall credit for assists simply because he was the last person to touch the basketball prior to some Wizard scoring. The “Face” of the Wizards is really the “Farce” of the Wizards. If John Wall averages 20ppg and 10 assists, I will still guarantee you that he will directly or indirectly have been responsible for twice that many points and assists for the opponent. John has a serious problem playing defense. It is not for lack of effort, it is for lack of skill and lack of experience. The Wizards have sent a boy to do a man’s job. They are cooked until either the boy becomes a man, or they replace the boy with a man.

Getabig, Welcome back! Tom will be so excited.
It is good to have a counter to him. I was just going
to come on to tell him that Blatche has played much
better recently (the games he didn’t see) and I think
not having him the past two games made a big difference. I think this is the worst we’ve played, losing
by 20 points to below average teams.
I think the big problem right now is we’re not a team,
just a bunch of guys playing. We’ve had like 25 different
starting line ups… I think in the last 2 years we’ve had
37 players come through. So many disruptions caused
by injuries and trades.. and of course the inexperience.

Rashard. I believe we need a veteran presence or two
on the court. What say you Gabbo?

Wizards are now 16-48.

Without Blatche, they are 0-11.

Thus, with Blatche this season, they are 16-37 (30% winning ratio). Extrapolating out of 82 games if Blatche is playing in all, then the Wizards would win 25 games – which is still not enough to get to the playoffs.

Tom is looking at per 40 minute stats

In per 40 minute stats Dray is in third worst PF in the NBA

A few people on here complained alot when Dray was playing center I was probobly one of them. I feel as though Dray is a more effective center than Javale is as long as Trevor Booker is in the game with him. They have looked good on the court together because Booker does all of the things well that Dray does not. Recently I have realized Mcgee does NOTHING well, he just happens to be the tallest most athletic guy on the court and that is all.

All the rookies, including John Wall, are out of control at this stage of the season except one.

His name is Trevor Booker.

He racked up 5 quick fouls due to the refs giving Blake Griffin every single “superstar” call.

However, during garbage time in the 4th quarter, Booker still played hard and went right at the Clippers 2nd and 3rd units. Wall was gassed by this time (since he’s played a lot of minutes again) and his mental state was not there; which led to turnovers, bad shots, and stupid plays.

Booker should be the starting SF next season or at least earn the right to be a starter next season.

If I had to choose between Young or Crawford, I would go with Nick because he understands the NBA system better. However, Ted is most likely going to pass on Nick and keep Crawford because they’re both the similiar 1-on-1 isolation-type players.

I’m very confused with Seraphin’s game/progress this year. Kevin needs to know what he will do with the ball before getting it.

God is funny.

He gave Marilyn Monroe enhanced woman parts and told her to show them to the world to get famous. She did and became famous. At least she knew how to use what God gave her.

He gave JaVale McGee enhanced body parts to play professional basketball better than most people; however, JaVale has yet find out how. Sure, those 2 dunks on Blake Griffin got the crowd awestruck tonight, but his lack of understanding fundamental basketball for a big man will be his demise off this team and be potentially out of the league.

JaVale should have stayed in college or transferred to a school with a big time coach that knows what he’s teaching and how he’s teaching. It never happened at Nevada and JaVale is being exposed every night by centers that shouldn’t expose him.

We can look at all the individual player stats we want to but the overall fact is no matter how well or bad someone does at something as a team we SUCK

When you look at the team stats at nba.com the wizards are in the bottom 5 of points allowed, points scored, fg%, opponents fg% rebounds, rebounds allowed, assist against, assist(yep thats right we have the 4th leading assist man in JW but as a team we are 3rd worst) 3 point %, opponents 3 point %, opponents steals, and obviously wins and losses because that is what ALL stats lead up to.

thats the problem dayle………….Javale has no skill at all.

Dray has the ability to see the court, dribble the basketball, shoot a normal shot, and basically play actual basketball instead of, “run n jump”

If you put Javale at the 4 he would take even more of the stupid shots that he already takes now except now they would be even further away from the basket than they already are! lol Plus he would get called for a million charges when he wasn’t busy dribbling the ball off his leg or just flat out getting it stolen from him. lol

Cliff Robinson is one of the top 50 scorers of all time……..

I was looking at some random basketball stats and noticed he is currently 46th on the NBAs all time scoring leaders list

Is he one of the top 50 scorers of all time………..HELL NO

He just stuck around and received enough playing time to accumulate that stat……….just like Dray and company are currently doing.

Just because Dray is 15th among PFs in rebounding doesn’t mean he is the 15th best rebounder. At the rate he rebounds he is probobly the 40th worst rebounder.

Some people will say, “Those guys don’t play as many minutes as Dray because they are not as good as him” or, “If they played as many minutes as he did their numbers will decline”

Well the fact is that if they do or don’t doesn’t even matter because Dray plays AGAINST those same guys.

For instance……Dray Averages 7.9 rebounds a game which is more than Indiana’s Jeff Foster who averages 6.6 and Indiana’s Josh Mcroberts who averages 5.3

But wait, Jeff Foster gets his 6.6 rebounds in exactly half of the time it takes Dray to get his 1.3 more rebounds than Fosters.

That leaves another 17 minutes for Josh Mcroberts to come in and accumulate a few more rebounds on good ole Dray :)

So yeah if you look at Dray one on one he has bigger numbers than each individual even though he was outplayed the whole time.

Does that really make him a better player?

How bad did we lose to Indiana this year?

@fushion AMEN! lol

It’s funny that you should say that about switching to a big name college……… I’ve been watching some of these intense NCAA tournament games lately and they have been intense. Watching the way they play D made me think that you are more likely to get a good defensive player from a big name program than anywhere else. I think players who have played longer in college are more likely to be good defenders in the NBA. Tim Duncan vs. Chris Webber Tim played 4 years while Chris played 2. Chris had almost the same length but had even more athletiscm and should have been a better defender but was not.

Yay!! Gotabig is back. Don’t leave us again, man, please….!

But I’m not going to pull my punches about Dray any more. He’s just what i said, one of the worst 4s in the league.

Per 40 minutes, he has the 5th most TOs of any PF in the league (that plays 20+ min/game). He makes up for much of that however by being among the top in steals.

He has one of the worst FG% for a PF in the league — which he combines with being 15th in FG attempts! And he doesn’t get to the line much either.

Typically, you have two responses to criticism of Dray:

1. Numbers don’t tell the story. Yet, they tell the story for every other player. Numbers make Tim Duncan, Blake Griffin, Pau Gasol, Zach Randolph, etc. look good. Numbers are what players put up.

2. It’s all the coach’s fault. Yet, when you thought he played great last year, he was playing for the same coach. And when he played for Eddie Jordan he was the same player he is now. Nope, not the coach either.

Oh… I forgot your third response — if you haven’t played and coached organized basketball, your opinion doesn’t mean anything.

Hmmm…. well, we tried hard to trade him this year and couldn’t get other teams’ GMs and coaches interested. Don’t most of them have a long background in organized basketball?

No one wanted him, and it’s not hard to see why. He isn’t a good player.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 13, 2011 at 9:45 AM

@ gray16 — as I said in my response in the previous thread, you’re right. It’s not arithmetic!! You have to think about roles, as you say. And that starts with position of course. Chris Paul is one of the best players in the league, but you would find it hard to compete if you started 5 Chris Pauls !!

For that matter, even though Kevin Love is one of the best players in the league, you couldn’t compete by starting 5 Kevin Loves.

Or 5 Kevin Durants. Or 5 Kobe Bryants.

On the other hand, if your starters were Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Kevin Love and… oh what the heck… JaVale McGee, you’d probably have a pretty good team!! :)

Still, I agree w/ you — and we can see the point you are making in action this season by looking at Miami. They are very good, but they are *less than* the sum of what their new players produced last year.

As to Brewer vs. Young, let me ask you this: lets say you were the Bulls GM, and I was the Wizards GM, and I offered you Nick Young for Ronnie Brewer, a straight swap (leaving aside for a moment the contract differences that make such a deal impossible).

Would you take the deal? Put Nick in your lineup and give me Ronnie?

holy crap,

sorry tom, i’m break dancing over here since you actually are agreeing with me on something…

anyways lol

as far as the bulls trade, for me, that’s a REALLY good question. first you have brewer, who has played great for them off the bench, as a back up sg.

but then there’s the fact that the bulls have been wanting an outside threat at the sg for a while now, and nick young could definitely supply that playing the way he is playing now. of course, you and I know nick, and I wonder how he would adapt going back to being a spot up shooter for most of the game. of course, he’s done that in a lot of games this season as well.

i remember a game i went to, wiz vs kings, he was spotting up from 3 and draining them, and if the bulls had a player like that, their offense would be even better.

plus, nick is not a bad defender, so on a team that already has good defense, i don’t think his defense would hurt the team. then there’s the fact that you have great rebounders already on the team, so nick’s rebounding won’t hurt. passing wise is the only thing that makes me wonder, but i don’t think that would hurt the team much either, since he wouldn’t be turning the ball over much imo either.

so that’s a good question imo, not a simple yes or no. the best thing for the bulls to do imo, is to make a run at him this summer (salary cap permitting) and have him AND brewer on the team (nick starting, brewer backing up). now that, would definitely help the team. of course, i want nick here (at a good price) too, so i hope he stays.

At this point all of the Wizards players are bench warmers and some of them are boarderline D-leaguers…including Wall…Until the Wizards put a professional team on the floor I’ll be totally frustrated with the organization. I still don’t believe that firing the coach and/or GM prior to their contract expiration is the answer. Some sort of stability in the organization is a plus. However, we were competitive earlier in the season and now they are a joke

i dont think wizards players are bench “warmers” necessarily but i do think they are bench players.

until john gets a respectable jump shot he won’t have very many driving lanes open up in the half court. johns my favorite player so i’m not hating on him, but WOW his jumper is terrible. it looks decent but his release is too slow and the ball is too flat.

but yeah… a big part of the reason is that the team doesn’t have enough legitimate talent

tyrone, the wizards are formed of a bunch of young guys and a few vets. of those vets:

rashard lewis: bench warmer?…
josh howard: bench warmer?…

then we have john wall. name me one team that draft the number 1 prospect out of the draft and doesn’t start him? the spurs were a 60 win team (without injuries), yet they started duncan all 82 games when they drafted him…

so then we have our personally drafted vets:

andray blatche: ignoring him lol
nick young: bench warmer?…

so then we have our young guys:

booker, seraphin, mcgee, crawford, and H. personally, i don’t have a problem with young guys who don’t fully understand the game yet, because they have PLENTY of time to adapt and progress. mcgee is the only problem i see here, since for every step he takes forward, he’s still making the same ol’ dumb mistakes.

but in the end, i agree, we need a better team. but it’s not that we need different players, it’s that we need our young guys to mature and better themselves.

Hey, Arthritic — about your question re: Dray, let me respond with my own question. If pigs could fly, would you prefer your pig wings w/ Carolina BBQ sauce or Buffalo style w/ ranch dressing?

What’s the point of your question? 47% is better than 44%, yes. Fewer turnovers is better than more turnovers, you bet. Is this a controversial opinion? I sure hope not.

In the NBA this season, among Power Forwards who play 20 minutes/game or more, 43 of them get more rebounds per 40 minutes than Andray Blatche. What do you think? If Dray got more rebounds would that make him better or worse?

Comment from Tom Mandel

@ gray16 — if you were an NBA GM who took Nick Young for Ronnie Brewer you’d be out of a job in a hurry. That’s up there in David Kahn territory (then again, *he* hasn’t been fired, so maybe you wouldn’t be either?).

On a team with a .500 record, I don’t think Nick Young would get even 15 minutes a night. The fact that he’s starting and playing heavy minutes is part of why we are 16-48.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 13, 2011 at 10:53 PM

tyrone — no, Wall is not a borderline D-League player. Overall, he’s playing just about at an average level for a point guard. Many of his numbers are terrific, but his FG% and TOs are terrible.

If he shot 50% and turned it over even one fewer time every 40 minutes, he’d be among the top point guards in the league.

Then again, as I point out above, if pigs had wings…. Still, he’s a 20-year old rookie. I expect him to have a very very good NBA career.

I don’t know guys I kinda like what I see from our team in the first year of a rebuild. I have never agreed with “any” Wizards/Bullets coach on the minutes they distribute among the players… but then they are the pros, I’m not. Still frustrating some times.

John Wall, Nick Young (if we resign him/might replace him with Crawford as… I think Fusey mentioned), Jordan Crawford, Trevor Booker, Andray Blatche, Kevin Seraphin, Hamady N’dayie, JaVale McGee. LOL except for Trevor’s shooting I thing we could all get together and put up a list of deficiencies. Imo the list of positives greatly outweigh those deficiencies. I think, especially given two more first round draft picks and a great deal of financial flexability, we are looking pretty good.

You’ll remember that the guys I was looking at were Nicolas Batum, George Hill, Mario Chalmers, and DeAndre Jordan. All of them have turned out well.

Of course that didn’t happen. Instead we got JaVale @ 18.

A lot of you were hope-hope-hoping that Joe Alexander (“he can head butt the rim”) would fall to us. Joe is out of the league and will never be back in the league. But he can still head butt the rim.

tom, not in all situations would i take nick over brewer. on the celtics, i would take brewer in a heartbeat. on the lakers, i would take brewer in a heart beat. but different teams could use or need players with different skill sets at the moment.

like for instance, i believe wp48 says brewer is playing better than monta ellis… guess which one i would rather have on the wizards if i was a gm… (for this current team)

going back to nick and brewer, if i have a team in need of scoring, and i could trade away brewer for him and imo not affect my rebounding or defense too much (other players being able to fill the gap, player being brought in can play defense) i’m definitely gonna consider that option.

would i do it? like i said, it’s a really good question imo. it wouldn’t be a decision i could make in a matter of a day even.

but, if i was the wizards gm, would i even consider trading nick for brewer? not unless theres a good draft pick in the process that can get me a scorer back. because that gets rid of our best scoring option, and leaves john wall and blatche to be our new main scoring option, both who can’t seem to put the ball in the hoop very well at the moment. now, give me dray from the end of last season (however horrible he was playing), and then i’d consider brewer over nick for the wiz. or let john turn into derrick rose, then i’d consider it. until then, i’d rather have nick on the team than brewer.

i personally think dray is good enough to start at power forward. it’s not like we’re keeping our secret weapon on the bench and playing a crappy 4. i want trevor to start but he can’t really score or create for himself while dray, though he turns the ball over a lot, is able to create off the dribble.

the wizards don’t really have many options on offense. we’re a “jump shooting team” that lacks shooters. the only one on our team who can consistently hit jumpers (2s and 3s) is nick. he’s the ONLY one. we had kirk but he’s gone. cartier can’t shoot from inside the 3pt line and he’s only effective on set shots, he’s pretty horrible off the dribble, in fact, i don’t remember the last time he made a shot off the dribble. john is a horrible shooter, crawford is terribly inconsistent. josh just isn’t the same… dunno if he’ll ever be. rashard lewis is injured. mo evans is okay, but he, like cartier, can’t really shoot off the dribble.

i don’t know who all of you want as our starting 3 but i’m guessing most people here want the lineup of

wall, young, ?, booker, mcgee

when there aren’t any shooters or guys who can create for themselves in the lineup, the other team can just back off a little and let them shoot. we wouldn’t need more than one shooter if we had a dominant center/pf with a variety of post moves… but we don’t. the best one we have with any kind of post moves is dray.

There is so much that goes into the performance of a basketball game…the good box-out so that your teammate can get the rebound; the great outlet pass that leads to another pass that leads to a basket; the inside screen that allows a teammate to complete a drive for an easy basket; the tipped rebound that allows another teammate to record a rebound; the pass that leads to a pass that leads to a score; the allowing a teammate to take the rebound that you might have gotten…none of which you will see, much less comprehend, unless you are watching the game and understand basketball, and none of which make the box score. The list of intangibles that have a positive impact on a basketball game goes on and on.

Initially I thought that my growing revulsion to the Wizards blog was due to the newbies who were blogging like the Sophomores that they are. After reviewing today’s posts, I now know that my distain is more focused on the know-nothings (both newbie and old timer) who blog bull feathers just to blog something.

Tom M., I truly appreciate the fact that you have been so involved in your pompous tirade on the very day that I returned to the blog because I thought that that pomposity left when the children returned to school. Your posts give me motivation to completely retire (with due respect to ChenierFan). I do not believe for a single minute that you (Tom M.) ever played an organized game of basketball beyond junior high school. In fact, I would not be the least bit surprised to find out that you never played a single game of organized basketball in your life. You simply don’t appear to have any tactical or physical knowledge of the game. You are the epitome of the arm-chair, day-after-the-game talking head who never performed, but feels free to criticize based solely on post-game statistics. Your penchant for focusing this blog on the post-game numbers is positively anathema to the enjoyment of the purity of the game. I realize that you will take exception to my comments. But frankly, and with due apology to the late Clark Gable, I don’t give a damn. Not looking at the Wizards blog is akin to kicking smoking, and I did that cold turkey after 45 years at 2+ packs per day, so while it won’t be enjoyable, this should be easy. So, post away, I won’t see it.

Tom M. challenged my belief that someone is more credible in his criticism of basketball performance if he has coached. Do I believe that anyone who has coached basketball knows more about the game than someone who has not coached. Tom, you can bet your favorite volume of poetry that I believe that. The old saying: if you want to truly know something, teach it, applies here too.

Some of the bloggers offer opinions that appear to be carefully thought out and fair even if critical. But that is rare. At one time this blog was fun; it no longer is. For the most part the blog has the same bloggers, same comments, day in and day out. Unless it gets some original thought, it is cooked. It is done. Turn it off.

basically what they did was
save money, draft westbrook and durant (2 main pieces) and draft decent players around them (green (gone now), harden, ibaka, etc)

Getabig should be thrilled that Tom M missed him so much that he continued the Blatche conversation with him right away as if it never ended :)

@getabig I believe over a year ago we made a nice long list together of all the things that never get recorded in a stat sheet but are so important. Of the few that you just listed, do you really think Dray does those things on a consistant basis?????

You listed boxing out and tipping rebounds to other players. Dray is a poor rebounder and so are the Wizards as a team so how could he do those things well?

I have always loved and been a huge fan of Drays potential. Dray has a unique combo of size and a guard like skill set that reminds me so much of Chris Webber. The problem has always been desire and inconsistencies.

I would love for Dray to get his act together and give us an entire season of 18 and 10 with half the turnovers he makes now and a 50% Fg% but right now that does not look likely.

I personally would challenge anyone who questions a players desire or perceived laziness. It could come over like that that but no one can offer any proof of those feelings that a player may have. Maybe a player who is giving 100% looks like he is giving less but the word lazy is not the problem. Now if you are laying around in your bed all day when you should be doing something than you have a lazy person.

Gotabig — I’m glad you quit smoking! Now we have to get the smoke to stop coming out of your ears!! :)

I understand your frustration. Things haven’t gone well for the Wizards this year. We might not even make my original prediction of 20 wins. And things haven’t gone well for your favorite player either.

IMO one of the tests of a person’s thinking is his or her ability to be *wrong.* If you are never wrong, you are probably not saying anything very valuable (although of course being wrong about e.g. X doesn’t in itself mean you are right about e.g. Y).

I’m wrong often. I didn’t think JaVale would improve this year. I was wrong, he did (but is still annoyingly frustrating). I didn’t think Nick would improve this year. I was wrong, he did. He’ll be in the league next year and for a few more years. Doesn’t make him a good player — but he’s not a complete bust as I thought he was proving to be.

You might want to allow yourself to be wrong about a few things. It makes it possible to be right about other things without having to rewrite reality to make it so.

As to “organized basketball”, Darryl Morey, the GM of Houston, never played organized basketball. But he’s proven to be quite a good GM I think. I don’t think Sam Presti ever played organized ball either. Or Denver’s Maso Ujiri.

There are also some GMs who are ex-NBA players but haven’t been very successful at their jobs. Isaiah Thomas comes to mind.

Have there been any non-players who coached in the NBA? That seems much less likely. I wonder if there are any examples. How about Van Gundy — not Stan of the Magic but his brother (whose first name slips my mind) who coached the Knicks, etc. He looks to be about 5’3″ and might not have played.

In any case, I would *so much* rather not argue about Andray Blatche. I’d rather appreciate what Booker has done as a rookie, talk about what Seraphin needs to do to develop, discuss future needs of the team, etc. The rookies and the young players represent what can be good about the future of the Wizards.

Lets let Dray be. Maybe he’ll be better next year, as dlts20 is sure he will be. If I’m responsible for us arguing, then I’m wrong and I apologize. As I said at the beginning of this post, I’m often wrong. I’ll try to improve.
