Game Day Bucks

6:40 AM Dave Johnson checking in…had a great night last night with Trevor Booker and some season ticket holders. Led by John Wall it has been fun to watch the Wizards’ rookie class develop and it is why ticket holders I talked to last night are so excited about the future. Recently acquired Jordan Crawfordhas been added to the freshman group and he has provided excitement with his athleticism and flat out ability to score. Crawford also had a Booker-like put-back dunk in Sunday’s game against the Pistons. Kevin Seraphin is showing he not only has strength but soft hands and the ability to finish around the basket. Hamady Ndiaye has not played much but earned a spot with attitude and effort and continues to develop. Back at it tonight against the Bucks. The Bucks are battling for a playoff spot but battling through injuries. It is possible Andrew Bogut will return tonight. Either way the Wizards have to do a better job on the boards than they did against the Pistons….THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor as we take you inside the game from Verizon Center….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE    link at the top of the page.  Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 7:00 PM….hope you can join us.

4:47 PM EST…Dave and Glenn at Verizon Center…Andrew Bogut is expected to play for the Bucks….Wizards Andray Blatche riding a season-high three consecutive games with at least 20 points.

6:59 PM EST…..starters are in…Josh Howard and Rashard Lewis are still sidelined….so it will be John Wall and Nick Young at guards…JaVale McGee at center….Andray Blatche and Maurice Evans at forwards….Bucks will go with Brandon Jennings and John Salmons at guards…Andrew Bogut at center…Luc Mbah Moute and Carlos Delfino at forwards

I really want to see Jordan Crawford do well. The guy has talent, no doubt. But there have been hundreds of players (it seems) with talent that never got close to even becoming valuable bench guys.
Anyway, I’m glad some these young guys finaly getting some meaningful minutes. These last games hopefully will give us an idea of our future building block. Should be fun to watch!

GO WIZARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NY is making me mad. He knows that we already are without 2 of our top scorers and then our other big scorer in Dray goes down so he’s like the only top scorer left, yet he has a dumb nonchalant look on his face and gets 2 stupid fouls. I wont count on him to bail us out this game unless he changes his attitude. It might take one of those nights for Crawford for us to win this one or better yet, do it on the defensive end. We have enough guys to do it on that end and win games, espically against a bad Offensive team like the Bucks

Tonight’s game was a case in point how this present Wizards team (as I have blogged before) has no chance without Andray.

It’s time for GABBO to re-join the blog and join me on this.

Was the the wizards game today and it was pretty much nothing new. The fans ( or the people in the crowds) booing players for making dumb desicions and missing shots/air balling. I also saw when McGee came out of the 2nd qtr. with only 3 mins on the clock that Whittman was giving McGee like a thumbs up when he walked passed then Whittman jerked his hand back as if telling him to SIT DOWN!

Since I wasn’t able to watch the game last night, I would love to hear your opinion of Crawford. His stats are o.k., but reading the comments on the various live threads, it sounds like he was pretty much hogging the ball and taking his teammates out of their offense by playing too much 1 on 5. I thought we didn’t move the ball well against Detroit, and it seems we didn’t share much against the Bucks either. 17 assists total isn’t too hot. Then again, if you shoot 37% as a team, you can’t expect much more, I guess. So I wonder, was Crawford a big part of the problem or was it more like him trying to take over because nobody else was making shots?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 9, 2011 at 8:26 AM

Still out of town, so I didn’t see the game — I’d like the same info about Crawford. At least he shot well, although if he was mostly playing when we were down by 20 points I don’t know how much it means.

As usual, Booker played the best of anyone on the team. Start him! If it’s absolutely impossible, for unknown reasons, to bring Dray off the bench then start Booker at the 3 and see what happens.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 9, 2011 at 8:32 AM

My only other question is whether we played with energy and effort. I care more about that than I do wins at this point.

Oh… and in his 5+ minutes, how did H look?

Comment from ericw
Time March 9, 2011 at 10:17 AM

I’d say you got energy from the usual suspects – Booker, Seraphin, Crawford, Wall. Crawford had seemed to have the most energy – mostly in the form of running helter skelter and jacking up a shot. He did have a few nice assists and he definately attacked the basket. And he was definately working hard on defense trying to stick with his man.

Nick did not have it last night. It’s really hard to blame him though… it was a HORRIBLE game. One of the worst I’ve watched IMO.

H looked tall… He didn’t look terrible but it was him and Seraphin playing at the same time and team defense kind of went down the crapper.

to answer the questions of guys who didn’t watch the game

crawford:
i like this guy. yes, he did turn the ball over a lot. however, to look at the positives, he is a scorer who also looks to pass and make plays. i’ve watched every game he’s played as a wizard so far and i’ve seen him make some great passes. also, he is fearless when attacking the basket. basically, he and john are the only ones from our team who attack the basket. (nick doesn’t. may be he can’t he doesn’t have the quickness or speed these 2 have) i think jordan has better ball handling skills than john does. (this is coming from a #1 wall fan) john still makes A TON of silly dribbling mistakes. i’ve rarely seen a point guard make so many dribbling errors under minimal pressure from the defense. he really needs to work on his advanced ball handling skills if he’s going to catch up to rose and westbrook whom he’s often compared to. one thing about crawford though, i don’t think he’s a very good defender, he tries hard, but he left his man open so many times last night. same with john.

HAMADY NDIAYEEEEEEEEE:
like i’ve been saying to many people here, he is NOT athletic. he’s average, at best. when he was playing defense, he almost fell backwards several times because his center of gravity was toward the back of his body while his feet were planted firmly to the ground. it seemed like his feet were glued to the ground because his foot speed seemed rather slow. biggest problem with that rookie lineup, other than the lack of scoring (because there were NO shooters other than crawford), was their defense against pick and rolls. they ended up letting the guy who “rolled” get a wide open lay up, a dunk, or a shooting foul. HAMADY NDIAYEEE also drove to the basket on offense once, taking 2 HUGE steps, and was fouled while in the act of shooting. it looked very, very awkward. AT LEAST, this guy didn’t try to shoot a jumper from 15 feet, a fade away, out of control hook shot/lay up or dribble too much on offense to get pulled from the game SEVERAL times like mcgee did.

i disagree with you ericw. if nick is the leading scorer of the team and sees the second leading scorer get injured, he needs to step up and score the bulk of our points because we don’t really have any scorers other than nick and andray. he disappeared from the game. salmons played tough defense on him and nick basically gave up.

Tom I kinda disagree with Arthritic. Before he went to the D League H played like a fish with both gills out of the water. Last night, in very limited playing time, He was in pretty fair defensive position more than once (out of it more than once too :) ). He did change some shots and actually got a block as I recall. He didn’t look quite as raw this time. Maybe?

I’m totally on the fence about Crawford. One time he screams down the floor and makes an incredible over the shoulder pass to the trailer for a spectacular play…… then there are the other times :) He is a scrapper I’ll give him that. How effective he is going to become time (and a lot more experience) will tell.

I think we have become a much younger team since the trade, but, a much more energy driven team. It’s hard to watch us fall so far behind after basically playing teams even in the first quarter or half. Still we have the kind of players that bring energy all game. Even being behind there is still a reason to watch and hope.

yeah i think NDIAYEEEEEE (i like to do that, sorry) played decent defense. he did block a shot, took a charge, and blocked another shot, which i think he got called for a foul? anyways he’s very limited on offense. if he gets better he might become a decent high energy backup center. i like his attitude and energy.

I was randomly looking at stats and while John Wall Obviously needs to work on cutting back on his turnovers he actually has a slightly better assist to turnover ratio than Derick Rose and Russell Westbrook……….

Despite the fact that Wall must improve, he also may be ahead of schedule too…………..

Comment from Babakism
Time March 10, 2011 at 1:32 AM

Hamady looks physically larger and more muscular than he did in training camp. He also no longer looks lost on the court and deffinetly made a defensive impact. I could care less about what he gives us on offense, he was drafted to be developed into a defensive specialist.

Comment from GrifonRacing

Everyone seems to like finding fault with John Wall’s game. Don’t count me among them. I Love the guy and hope we are good enough 3 years down the line to be able to “keep” him. You don’t sneeze at a rookie scaring a triple double on multiple occasions. Turnovers.. yeah.. so what? He is .. what? … 20?

Remember… the numbers Mr. Wall gets “pretty” consistently are with, not only a bad team with bad players but with a bunch of rookies still learning how to shoot. I have no idea how he gets so many assists? Imagine him on a “good” team.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time March 10, 2011 at 2:52 AM

Arthritic imo Trevor is the future of the Wizards. Andray is an overpayed… ok Wimp was a little stong… underachiever. In hindsight the 20/20 would have been to let Andray go. Who knew? With Andray “nursing” his shoulder I hope Trevor gets enough minutes to show “everyone” he should be starting

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 10, 2011 at 12:02 PM

@ GrifonRacing — “Who knew?” I did, for one.

It’s been obvious to me for a couple of years that Andray’s *ceiling* was to be an average player and that he showed no likelihood of achieving that ceiling.

I also pointed out that when you look *in detail* at *all* the games he played last half of ’09-10, you can see that he wasn’t particularly outstanding — and that his best stretch came before teams started devoting effort to scouting him.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 10, 2011 at 12:13 PM

Over the whole of this season, our most productive player has been JaVale. All the same, his productivity has declined since his outstanding stretch to begin the season (@ the first 20 games).

By “productive” I mean productive output per 40 minutes played. That output refers to points scored efficiently, FG %, rebounds, TOs, steals, Assists, Fouls, times to the line, FT %, Blocks… those kinds of things — all summed up in some kind of overview number that’s also corrected for the position the guy plays (it’s easier for a C to have a high FG% than a G, for example — but you need both guys).

The 2d best on the season? Trevor Booker. No question about it. If Trevor had played 1600 minutes so far, rather than 800, we’d probably have a couple more wins (assuming the extra 800 were taken away from Dray who has contributed… nothing).

Comment from Arthritic
Time March 10, 2011 at 2:52 PM

@tom

if you’ve ever played organized basketball yourself, you should know basketball isn’t always about “productivity” measured in terms of statistics.

you also have to count the intangibles. you always say javale is the most productive player on the team.

do you know why he doesn’t get 40+ minutes a night?

watch him play every game and tell me if you honestly think he knows how to play basketball. watch his unorthodox, out of control moves on offense. watch him have no idea what he’s doing on defense, purposely let everyone have an open lane to the basket so he could go for a block (which he fails most of the time by either completely missing/ fouling/ goaltending. you can’t say he’s a great shot blocker if he “attempts/swipes” at the ball 10 times a game and averages 2.

on offense, he has lost the trust of his teammates. when he rolls after setting a terrible pick (he’s one of the worst at setting picks) he always look to get an alley-oop even when he doesn’t really have an open lane to the basket. john has been throwing fewer alley oop passes and you can clearly see mcgee getting frustrated in games.

you see mcgee calling for the ball from 15 feet out, as if he’s some sort of offensive weapon, and his teammates rarely give him the ball since he very rarely makes the right decision.

after a lot of post games interviews, flip calls out javale for making stupid plays and the same mistakes he’s been making the past 2 years. you fxxx up, you fix your mistakes. they aren’t “mistakes” if you do the same thing for 3 years.

nowadays, he makes one stupid play, flip immediately brings seraphin off the bench. yet, he continues to do the same thing again and again.

i will not deny that javale is gifted. i never did. his combination of athleticism, length and agility are EXTREMELY rare. however, there’s a limit to how good he can be by relying solely on his gifts rather than by polishing his skills to actually become a better basketball player. he hasn’t improved much since he first came into the league. his numbers are OBVIOUSLY up because no one else is here to start at center.

Comment from gray16
Time March 10, 2011 at 3:28 PM

i think the problem with javale is this:

when you are playing basketball, if you have talent, you are going to make an impact on the game. you are going to get points, and/or rebound, and/or get assists. but unless you are a superstar, you aren’t going to be doing this every play, or even be looked at to do this every play. this means, on the plays where you aren’t going to make a mark on the stat sheet, you need to hold your own, not make mistakes, and try to help out as much with running the play, etc.

javale is like this: he’s very talented, and very athletic. he’s got a body a lot of nba players dream for. he can be a very good rebounder, he makes a good percentage of his shots, and he can block a lot of shots. problem is, on those plays where he doesn’t make a mark on the stat sheet, he makes A LOT of mistakes in the background. mistakes that can’t get directly linked to him on the stat sheet, but do affect the team’s play. a coach will notice these mistakes best, and with a lot of scrutiny already on him from flip, javale’s mistakes are under a magnifying glass. this is why flip doesn’t play him heavy minutes, and why while he is productive, javale is not our best player.

as a coach, i believe you put out the players who can run your schemes the best. if there is a guy who is messing up your system, even if he is getting points or rebounds, you aren’t going to be happy with him, and will sit him, because you feel he is hurting the system that you feel will help the team most. this is what flip does with javale imo.

Comment from Arthritic
Time March 10, 2011 at 3:37 PM

^— i agree. the sad thing is… we don’t really have a choice at center.

seraphin is a bit too short to be a 5. i’ve noticed the last couple of games when he played more minutes, he threw up some wild shots near the basket or was blocked by guys taller than him.

i know he’s big and athletic, but i feel like seraphin is more fit to be a 4.

Comment from gray16
Time March 10, 2011 at 3:54 PM

that’s why i’m leaning more and more towards us drafting enes kanter in the draft. we need a big body, a solid guy who we can rely on to help us in the middle. there are no proven stars in this draft, there are some high risk/high reward type players like perry jones, harrison barnes, derrick williams and then there’s the proven players who may not be stars but you know what you are getting like sullinger or kanter.

i’m thinking we need a big man. there’s no one in this draft i see we should take a risk on rather than getting a center who we can rely on.

Comment from Arthritic
Time March 10, 2011 at 5:15 PM

enes kanter seems like a good pick. i was really hoping he could play at kentucky…

i hope we don’t draft perry jones. he has unlimited potential but doesn’t really seem to have that desire to be the best. his jump shot is very inconsistent and i saw him shooting a lot at baylor.

if we get a 3, i’d like barnes or derrick williams (3/4). i really don’t feel see terrence jones doing much.

if we get a 4, i’d take sullinger.

5, kanter.

whoever we end up drafting, i hope he has the right mindset. he needs to be a guy like john who has that will power to WANT to become the best.

Since most of you are basketball experts, I have a couple questions.
I thought getting rebounds was mostly about effort.
Does it take some special talent I’m not aware of? I’m
bewildered that a couple games ago JaVale only got two
rebounds.. not only is he tall but he has long arms. Is it
about BBall IQ? (Oftentimes Wiz offense seems in a hurry to get to other side rather than stay for a rebound
never understood that)
Would it not be helpful with scoring and winning games
if the Wiz would drive to the basket about twice as much
as they do now rather than shooting jumpers? It seems
odds of scoring are much better along with getting fouled. If so, WHY are we not doing this more?

Comment from Arthritic
Time March 10, 2011 at 9:31 PM

@dayle

the problem with javale’s rebounding is that he doesn’t know how to box out. he gets rebounds by basically trying to reach over everyone since he probably has the longest reach in the entire league. if he actually boxed out and rebounded… he could easily average 15 rebounds / game.

i agree we don’t really drive to the basket much as a team. the only ones that really do are wall and crawford. i think the problem is 1. we don’t have slashers (even if they WANTED to they CAN’T because they either don’t have the ball handling ability or the quickness needed to blow by the defense) 2. they get lazy and just settle for jump shots

that’s what i think

Comment from gray16
Time March 10, 2011 at 9:48 PM

arthritic, could also be because the defense was getting in the paint. when that happens, javale immediately goes for the block, and leaves himself out of any position to get a rebound. it’s the opposite of kevin love, who will not attempt to change a shot much at all, but rather go for the rebound. we see which one gets more blocked shots and makes teams think twice about going in the paint, and we see which one gets all the rebounds lol.

there’s a middle ground in there somewhere which is best though, which was mastered by guys like rodman and ben wallace, both great defensive players and rebounders.

In my opinion I think there are a few things a player must have to be a good rebounder.

1. Hustle
2. Quickness
3. The ability to box out
4. Basketball IQ. (The player must know how the ball bounces off the rim, it’s like playing pool)

thanks Arthritic et al. do you all not think we should be
going to the basket more, slasher or not? Sometimes
when you just do something you get better. Is any of
this on Flip?
As rabid a fan as I am, all I know about basketball is from watching on TV and reading the paper and the blog
so I need to know the meaning of box out???

Comment from Arthritic

basically boxing out is when you see guys fighting for position to grab the rebound. you try to position yourself between the guy you’re guarding/boxing out and the basket.

boxing out is a skill, but if you’re wide and big, it makes it easier to do. having quick foot speed helps too.

that’s why ben wallace (6’9″)and dennis rodman (6’6″), even though they’re relatively average in height, they averaged some ridiculous rebounding numbers… especially rodman.

kevin love is great at boxing out and also has AMAZING sense to where the ball will land (like millie mill said)

@ Arthritic — I don’t disagree with anything you say. Much of what JaVale accomplishes gets done *in spite of* his lack of discipline and basketball IQ. Surely you remember me saying that *many times* in the past!

The Wizards have won 16 games. JaVale is the most productive player minute for minute *on the Wizards* — not on the Boston Celtics!! :) Doesn’t make him a superstar.

All the same, he’s shooting almost 54% this year. He’s grabbing 11.6 rebounds per 40 minutes. If you get 11.6 boards every 40 minutes, that makes you a better rebounder than if you get 10.6 rebounds every 40 minutes. It’s *more productive* rebounding. It also makes you a better rebounder than *someone else* who gets 10.6 rebounds every 40 minutes.

Sorry, but you don’t need to play organized basketball to know this. For that matter, you don’t need to play organized basketball to see that JaVale sets lousy picks.

JaVale should be and could be a lot better given his physical gifts. Above all, he could and should fix the things he does wrong/bad over and over. He could be much *more* productive. All the same, on the whole season, he’s the most productive Wizard minute for minute.

Comment from GrifonRacing

Dayle a box out is when a player positions himself between the basket and the opposing player giving him better position for a rebound. Boxing out is all about foot speed, anticipation, and knowing the other player’s tendencies. He who gets to the spot first wins :)

It’s a very fine line between hanging in for an offensive rebound or making it back to the other end of the floor on defense if you don’t get it. If you hang in for the rebound and don’t get it the other team usually scores a lay up at the other end.

Apparently Love studied Wes Unseld’s game a lot as a kid (Love’s dad was a Bullet) and picked up Unseld’s ability to see a shot in the air and get a sense of where it was going to bounce off the rim.

One thing to remember is that your opponent is trying to box you out too. It’s not just do *you* do it or not. McGee may lack the lower body size/strength to get and hold position.

There’s no point in comparing JaVale and Kevin Love. Love is one of the best players in the NBA. Without him, Minnesota might have 4 wins on the season.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time March 10, 2011 at 11:56 PM

I’m just a little afraid having JaVale have the best individual stats this year. Our best player is a player that throws the ball at the rim more than he shoots it… is constantly getting out of defensive position going for the block or steal… and gets backed down by Twiggy.

Sheesh

@ Grifonracing — I have been calling for us to try to get Love for 2 years. I was especially hopeful that we could trade Dray for him last Summer — David Kahn is an unqualified GM and might have been willing to go for it.

I might add that saying that Love would be preferable to Blatche was *uniformly* laughed at on this blog — esp. by Gotabig of course, but by others as well.

@ ericw — JaVale is not terrible, no. But he sure is frustrating.

I just wanted to chime in on the JaVale thing…….I’ll start by saying JaVale needs work( that’s obvious), but I still feel the kid has a lot of potential. At this point his greatest deficiency is strength (the I.Q. thing will come with playing time & better coaching). When JaVale becomes stronger he won’t have to rely on just being able to jump high to defend or to get his offense. He’ll be able to back defenders down and defensively he’ll be able to hold his ground. As Tom pointed out he’s our most productive player per 40mins. I think that’s a good sign for a kid who’s still learning the game!!!

Let’s brake this down
- He’s 23 years old (that’s still very young),
- This is his first year starting at C (full-time),
- Unless you follow college basketball with a magnifying glass he was pretty much unheard of.
- He’s our most productive player.

Since JaVale is our most productive player, Flip should be telling the rest of the team that he wants them to play more like JaVale!!! LOL

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 11, 2011 at 10:03 AM

Mr. KIA — I don’t know that JaVale is going to get any stronger in a way that makes a difference. He is *so* long that he seems not to be able to “plant” himself against leverage.

As to his basketball IQ, this is what puzzles me most — both his parents are players! Why hasn’t he learned to understand the game? He’s had plenty of time. I question how committed he is to improving.

On the other hand, he is *definitely* a better player this year than he was last year. He’s not as good as he was the first 20 games of the season, however. I don’t like to see someone his age regress.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 11, 2011 at 10:42 AM

I’d like to get back to Trevor Booker — I mentioned JaVale as part of talking about him. On the season, he’s the 2d most productive Wizard minute-for-minute. Credit to Ernie for moving up to pick him; he is a *rookie surprise.*

There have been some other rookie surprises as well. Greg Monroe (pick #7), Paul George (#10) and Ed Davis (#13) are all playing a lot better than most guys picked ahead of them. Damion James, in limited minutes (injury) has also been very good, and of course Landry Fields has been the surprise of the year. If it weren’t for Blake Griffin, he’d be a shoe-in for RoY.

Among the top picks, John Wall hasn’t really established himself at a high level yet, despite some spectacular performances — too many mistakes and still can’t shoot. Evan Turner ditto. DeMarcus Cousins ditto. And Wes Johnson has been *awful.*

Further down, but still in the middle of round 1, Luke Babbitt has been terrible, our Kevin Seraphin hasn’t yet been productive, and Craig Brackins looks like a completely wasted pick (despite Doc Linkin’s praise for him).

Comment from Mr. Know it All

@ Tom – JaVale has a very similar build to Tyson Chandler, Marcus Camby and Kevin Garnett who were also pushed around early in their career’s but became very effective big men in the league (KG a superstar). In time and with a lot of strength & conditioning, JaVale will naturally become stronger (I’m no doctor but he should physically mature around 25-28) Yes both his parents were basketball players but I’ve heard his father wasn’t active in his life as he was growing up, even though his mom played ball I can imagine it being hard for her (maybe even embarrassing for him) to be taught basketball by his mom!!!

it’s true that javale is similar in build to chandler, camby and garnett but… we garnett should never be compared to javale.

garnett had an outside game javale “thinks” he has… as seen from the billions of times we all see javale shoot 10-15 foot fadeaways and jumpers. lol i don’t think it’s fair to compare kg to mcgee.
this is his 3rd year in the league and he looks the same as when he was a rookie. the way he continues to get pushed around also suggests he hasn’t gotten any stronger, if at all.

what i want to know from all of you is this. if javale is a full time starter again next season (if there is one), but continues to make the same mistakes and shows no improvement over this season… would you all want him to be the starting center 2 seasons from now?

I like Javale but I don’t think he will ever be a good starting Center in the NBA. He seems not to learn from his mistakes at all. I can understand messing up a few times but he keeps making the same mistakes. #1 mistake is when he trys to go coast to coast and loses the ball. That’s a sure sign that he doesn’t get it.

I would like to see the Wizards use the ATL pick to get a real low post player. The Mock draft olny show one 7 footer in the draft.

I wasn’t comparing style of play or if JaVale was as good as KG……….. This brings me to the word compare. I often hear people make the statement “ You can’t compare this player to that player” What they don’t realize is that anything can be compared. I can compare an Orange to a Cadillac Escalade if I want too. The definition of compare is to find the similarities or DIFFERENCES of whatever your comparing.

John Wall, Nick Young: 5 Reasons They’re the Best Young NBA Backcourt Duo

Comment from GrifonRacing

Interesting article BlueandGold. Only one problem I see is that Nick Young isn’t signed for next year. I guess Ernie is going to let him get a few more 30 point games under his belt so more teams will notice him. We will then have to “overpay” (most likely) for his services. He extends the laziest player on the team and completely ignores the player that has probably up’d his game the 2nd most to JaVale’s 1st. I hope JaVale gets back to early season form.

Dayle… offensive rebounding is all about the players doing it. For instance, I wouldn’t mind Trevor hanging a little for an offensive rebound because he has the speed to still beat his man down the floor if the other team were to get the rebound. Yi or Andray, definately not. I rarely see either of them do much more than jog down the court… it would be a sure score for the other team if either of those two battled for an offensive rebound.

Ok are we talkng “picks” or “box outs”? In a box out… yes the object is to position yourself bewteen your man and the basket. A pick is a little different. In a pick you stand firm while a player trying to gain position runs his defender into you thus gaining the advantage.

Tom I had high hopes for Andray I’ll certainly admit to that, but, I don’t recall all that many Gabbo clones wanting him over Kevin Love.

Let Yi go.

BTW, though we’ve all been very critical of Blatche, I
think he’s played much better the last 3 or 4 games,
with more energy and driving to the basket more. And I
believe that was the same shoulder he injured previously.
Is Kevin Love’s contract up or something?

@ Mr. KIA — you are right; you can compare an orange to an Escalade or JaVale to Garnett or Dray to Love. It’s possible to learn something from such comparisons (well… not so much the first one! :) ).

I think I used the phrase “no point comparing Dray w/ Love”, when what I really meant was that there was no point in setting an unrealistic expectation for him.

Comment from Tom Mandel

The article about Wall and Young as a backcourt duo makes no sense to me. Once the guy dings Ronnie Brewer (of Chicago), you know he doesn’t understand anything whatever. Brewer is an outstanding player, and he is *much better* than Nick Young, that’s for sure!

Per 40 minutes on the floor, Brewer vs. Young has fewer fouls, fewer turnovers, almost 3 times as many steals, almost twice as many assists, almost double the rebounds, and a higher FG% — although the latter doesn’t matter as he doesn’t shoot much.

Brewer is also a tremendous defender and has a very high basketball IQ. There isn’t a GM in the league who would prefer Nick to him, and if we had him starting instead of Nick this year we’d probably have another half dozen wins.

I might mention that when he was a FA recently, I wanted him for the Wizards — a lot! And said so on this blog.

tom,

i understand you love the wp48 numbers to judge people, problem is, building a team purely off of wp48 won’t equate to as many wins as you think. you have to factor in which skills each player does best…

so no, bringing in brewer wouldn’t increase our wins by 6. one of our main problems all season has been the inability to make shots, and thus score points. bringing in brewer is going to help that?….

nick young’s scoring and hot shooting nights have led to a lot of wins and close games for us this season. without it, there were a bunch of games we would’ve lost.

ronnie brewer on the other hand is not a great scorer or shooter, and could only play within the offense. replacing nick with him leaves blatche and wall having to shoot more, and neither has a reliable offensive game so…. where are those other points going to come from?

rebounding wise, when brewer was playing 32 minutes, his rebounds weren’t any better than they are now. now, either he just got a lot better at rebounding over the summer, or it’s a matter of situation (coming off the bench and needing to rebound more with the new team)

assist wise brewer does get more assists, but this is not because he’s a great passer or anything, it’s because that is one of his main jobs, to keep the ball moving. just simply passing the ball within the offense can add assists. but if you are looked at to score, you are going to take shots when you get the ball more often. now, nick young doesn’t look to pass very often and should get more assists, but brewer’s assists aren’t going to add anything to this team, especially with john handling the ball so much.

now comes the one area brewer would help, defensively. he is a better defensive player than nick, and would provide a push with that. and we would be a better defensive team with him on the team. that said, our lack of scoring without nick then becomes a worse problem, so we would most likely score less, so even if we held our opponents to less points, we still wouldn’t have the offense to overcome the opposing teams.

so even though brewer’s wp48 numbers say he would be better for this team, he’s in a much different role than nick, and right now our sg spot requires much more scoring than brewer could supply.

Comment from gray16
Time March 12, 2011 at 10:00 AM

grifon,

remember, when we signed blatche, he was coming off a half of a season where he was playing very well. hindsight is 20/20, at the time, i believe all of us agreed with resigning blatche.

now, looking at how blatche has regressed, can you blame ernie for not jumping at the opportunity to sign nick. especially when nick has those off nights that make you wonder (can he maintain this for years to come).

then there’s the new cba. unless you have a superstar on your team, i don’t think anyone wants to resign players not knowing how the new cba will be formatted. doing so could lead you to overpaying even more than if you wait for other teams to make offer sheets.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 12, 2011 at 3:41 PM

@ gray16 — actually, Dray did *not* play all that well the 2d half of last season. He had 8 strong games before other teams began bothering to scout him. After that he had a few good ones and a large number of bad ones.

No, I didn’t agree w/ re-signing him. Gabbo was on the blog at the time, and I like the guy and didn’t want to rain on his parade — he was *very* happy about the move — so I didn’t criticize it, but I thought it was *terrible* at the time just as I do know. You’ll have to trust me on that.

I don’t agree about Nick vs. Brewer — and for you to say “we’ve won a lot of games” because of his shooting is kind of strange given that we haven’t won a lot of games period! :)

Also to say “we’ve had problems scoring” is misleading as well — you’re telling me we haven’t had problems rebounding? We haven’t had problems w/ not enough steals? We haven’t had problems with all the things Ronnie Brewer does well.

And finally… *Of course* you can’t just put a team together based on WP48 (or any other) numbers. You have to consider position, and you have to be aware of issues of diminishing returns (if you have the league’s 3 strongest rebounders at their position in your starting 5 you won’t get full benefit of their skills). You need more than numbers.

But, truth is, you don’t need *much* more than numbers. Most of the rest of it is mythology — and can be *proven* to be mythology by examining actual game results.

How did I *know* Trevor Booker was going to be a solid pro? I looked at his college numbers. He was one of the leading 4s in the nation using WS40 numbers (like wp4) his junior year. That told me everything I needed to know — or more accurately it led me to look at the raw stats themselves, and *they* told me everything I needed to know.

Not 100% — there are significant false positives, guys w/ good college numbers even against top competition but who lack something that holds them back in the NBA. But there are almost *no* false negatives — guys w/ bad or one-sided numbers who turn out to be good pros. I can’t think of a single example in fact.

Comment from gray16

Tom,

ok, i trust you on it, good call on blatche, but i don’t see how he played horribly enough for us not to extend his contract. but that’s just me.

as far as nick vs brewer:

i’m not saying we have won a lot of games, i’m saying we have won a lot the games (WE HAVE WON) because of nick’s scoring.

and i’m not saying rebounding hasn’t been a problem, but don’t act like brewer’s gonna increase that a whole lot, like i said, when he was getting heavy minutes, he was only getting 3.2 rpg. i know you are translating your per 40 minutes into “he would do this and that here” but that’s pure speculation, not fact.

what has been proven? that brewer has not been able to help teams with scoring as much as nick. and if you were to take all those shots nick has taken away, factor in brewer, now you have extra shots going to the rest of the players (wall, dray, thornton/whoever at the time, javale). none of those players has displayed the ability to hit a lot of shots this season, so are you telling me them getting even more shots is going to help?

so while even if brewer came in here and maintained the same wp48 with the same stats, those extra shots nick is taking go to other players, and bring their wp48 down. they you would say “well, it’s clearly not brewer’s fault, he’s playing better than nick was here” and completely ignore that nick was/is helping other’s wp48.

but i will admit, that last part is speculation by me as well. maybe if brewer was here, blatche would connect on more shots, or wall would be shooting better… or maybe blatche would shoot just as bad with more attempts, wall the same with less assists (and maybe even more to’s due to forcing it)… imo, i’m gonna choose the latter from what i’ve seen from brewer in utah and chicago…
