Game Day Charlotte

8:43 AM EST…Dave Johnsonchecking in from Charlotte….Felt good to get back in the win column. As we discussed on the radio it was more than just making shots. The defensive energy and intensity were there. The forwards really set the tone. The Wizards had 6 blocked shots before the Nets made their fourth field goal.  Rashard Lewis, Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee really had a chemistry.Blatche was more aggressive in attacking the basket. McGee 6 blocked shots and terrific hustle. Lewis had 16 points 13 rebounds but also had 6 assists…..and he noted:

“We have to continue pushing the ball up and getting it to John (Wall). The chemistry with John (Wall) is getting better and better every game and in practice. We are just trying to figure things out with pick and rolls and when we get stops we have to get him the ball. He works well with the defense and that helps us keep going.”

As always I really appreciate everyone jumping on the BLOG during games while we broadcast. sEanwithabigE11 even jumped on the BLOG while watching the game from section 408.

this should definitely be our first road win, i really hope the boys come to play tonight. time to get that monkey off our backs!

if we keep playing defense like we did last night, we will be winning more and more games in the future. but we gotta keep scoring as well, defense isn’t everything.

hopefully we can get off to another hot start tonight. if we can, i’m pretty sure we will dominate the cats tonight.

Rashard’s game last night was one of the best games by a Wizard in a long time. Maybe the best this year — although there have been a couple by JaVale and John that were in that range.

The Wiz won the clash of the pygmies last night and looked good doing it. The Nets played the absolute worst first quarter of basketball yet seen.

Does Maria know that Sasha shot 1/14? She might want to reconsider that engagement. But on the other hand, Maria lost to a 31 yr old part time tour player this week, in straight sets no less, so she didn’t do much better.

This long and athletic front line of the Wiz needs a chance to develop. I always wanted to go big and now we are doing it. Rashard will benefit the most because now he is a matchup nightmare for other 3′s.

JaVale was outstanding last night.

Andray’s biggest problem is not that he is a “finesse” player, it is that he is not a “high energy” player. If he could show the type of intensity he had the last two minutes of that game against the Nets when he was desparate for the triple-double, he would be an All-star. As it is, he can hold his own against any forward in the league. That’s not bad. Those who want to start Trevor ahead of him are being unfair to Trevor, he’s just not ready. He is not up to speed on the pace of play – yet. He rushes too much.

hey, there is one more team that is now worse than us record wise… Cleveland! lol

guess what their home record is… 5-12… they went from one of the best home teams ever to the worst in the league.

if there is a silver lining with our record, it’s definitely our home record. we are above .500 at home, which really, is when you really want a win. fans don’t want to see losses in person.

and i honestly think that ted is doing a good job with the home atmosphere and promotions to get fans in. and of course, john wall is certainly a big help.

As much as I’d like to see him out there tonight, I just hope they’re not taking any more chances with him.
In any case, I can feel that first road win coming against the Bobcats!

i dont understand why or how al thornton gets more minutes over trevor booker… trevor barely played last night

i knew rashard would play well for us… on the other hand… arenas isnt doing much off the bench down in orlando. main reason why theyve been winning is because of hedo and jrich.

i honestly think ticket prices need to be lower for the games against unpopular teams. verizon center looks half empty in those games.

MJ should definitely be courtside to see if the road warriors turn into road pussycats again. My question Wizkids is when are we going to get busy living the dream or will we get busy being mediocre. The whole nation will be watching this roller coaster team to see if the trend will CONTINUE! Will the Fat Lady Sing Tonight! We shall see!

I agree, Blatche’s main problem is lack of energy. I think at least part of the problem is conditioning. I only watched the last 3 min. Looks like Blatche’s shot is still off.

Anyone know when the trade deadline is?

We are again on a pace to win 22.

I would love to beat the Bobkitties tonight. That might well give us a long-lasting boost.

Comment from dlts20
Time January 8, 2011 at 4:33 PM

Call me crazy but when we got off to that great start, I was thinking that we need to save some for this game. Therefore I was actually glad that the Nets made a bit of a run a couple of times. I could see us in typical Wiz fashion just thrashing them from the jump, some of us maybe thinking they turned the corner, just to lay down a futile effort against the Bobcats with the worst D ever.

Now they we had to work some for it, I think that will again make us focused for tonight. It sucks that we didnt get to rest guys but fatigue shouldnt be a factor when youre 0-17 on the road and havent won 2 games in a row all season. You should be able to fight through it. Here’s seeing if they can. Jax & Wallace always kills us and they are playing alot better without Brown. Lets see if our 2 new fan favorites in NY & Lewis can give those guys the same problems they ususally give us.

It would be great if we had Howard to matchup with them also but thats probably a long shot. Thorton or Booker will need to step up. If we go small some with Wall & Kirk, hopefully Jax doesnt kill us in the post. They will be active, physical, and hustle alot. If we can match that then we will be ok. Here’s hoping that Dray has started to turn the corner and I think Wall could go for like 18 & 12 tonight or more tonight back in front of the hometown crowd.

LOL….Blatche’s problem is that he’s using his own brain, instead of having a mentor PERIOD…Gotta be the most ignorant professional interview i’ve ever heard. after six years in the league, you would expect more. I also blame the coaches for not being enforcers, stop telling the media, tell him what you want him to do and enforce it PERIOD

In regards to Arenas, he doesn’t have to do much, just come in and play your role. the team is winning and he’s on the team (the team is on a winning streak greater than our total amt of wins and we want to comment)…lol…hatorade at it’s best.

do we actually know the positions our players are playing. Booker is being played at the four and Thornton at the three. We are also playing Lewis at the three (his all star position). Shard is worth his weight ORLANDO DIDN’T PLAY HIM CORRECTLY.

JHoward is better off not even playing this year and waiting until next season to see if he can make a comeback. It usually takes a full season to “heal” from a knee surgery. Our medical staff is here for ??? reason.

One can only guess which nature video will be shown to the team before tonights game. The players seemed to enjoy last night’s Battle at Krugers and maybe Flip has found himself a new motivation tool. :-) Even if it doesn’t make them better players , we’ll have some of the biggest wildlife experts on our team.

Now that they sent Hamady to Dakota, I had to check out the D-League.
I checked out efficiency stats…and guess who showed up near the top?

Antonio was a great Professional and he was one of the key reasons we went to the playoffs while Gil was hurt. I never knew what happened to him, I guess the D-League is becoming a place for old vets to hang around. I saw Antoine Walker and he looked fat. lol.

x2 on antonio daniels, he was one of our best players when he was here. like tom, i think he will make a great coach one day, he had a great understanding of the game. i was sad to see antonio go when he did, but it was best for us since he was getting injured so much.

as for playing in the d league, antonio just loves the game, and will probably play it as long as his body allows. i expect him to retire in the near future though.

Kenneth Faried — he had a *great* year last year and then, surprisingly, went back for his senior year. Looks like a good decision )unless there’s a lockout). He’s projected as a late first-rounder and given his *unbelievable* numbers he should go up.

Comment from gray16
Time January 9, 2011 at 9:50 AM

i remember you mentioning him a lot last season tom, and i figured i had to check him out this season. i would love to see him on the team.

we need a pf, it’s pretty obvious. i would like to see us get at least two first round picks again, and use one on faried (hopefully we could get him with the pick in the trade) and get one of the high scoring ability sfs with our pick. that would be a perfect draft alone imo.

we would be picking up a scorer (we need a go to guy) who fills the sf spot, and faried, who i think will be a great pro.

another guy that has impressed me is maryland’s own jordan williams, he is worth a look as well.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 9, 2011 at 9:51 AM

We got 9 fewer rebounds than Charlotte last night, and 9 fewer trips to the line. It’s hard to overcome that.

If only coach had followed @ proof’s suggestion and not played Hinrich in the 2d half — we could have lost by 30! :)

Andray Blatche looks *completely lost* on the court right now. I’m starting to feel sorry for the guy.

In 24+ minutes, JaVale had 1 solitary rebound.

Comment from proofofconcept
Time January 9, 2011 at 11:01 AM

12 or 30, we lost. we have more of a chance with an ATTACKING guard, than someone running around the perimeter looking like he’s play “keep away” or “peek a boo” for 18 of the 24 seconds each possession.

The coach has no control or the control that he does have is grossly mis-used.

so we get chandler AND gallo AND another 3 pt shooter by getting rid of blatche? that seems… extremely one sided to say the least.

LOL its funniest for denver
they get a lazy big in blatche and an even lazier big in curry. that’ll really help with their rebuilding plans.

i hope you were just messing around

Arenas urged to get in the weight room

01/09/2011 – 2:30pm
The Magic have been urging PG Gilbert Arenas to devote more time to the weight room, hoping he can be in better shape for the playoffs.”I told Gilbert the other day that all I need to see from him now are flashes,” Smith said. “He took some time off (during his suspension for gun-play in Washington last season). I told him I want to see more in April.”

@ proof — about the trade of Caron for Lewis. I think we’d have to take @ another $10m in salary, and someone had the notion that Dallas would “throw in” (?) Tyson Chandler, who has an expiring contract, to make up the difference. Given that Chandler is one of the most productive Centers in the league, this idea struck me as kinda off the wall!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 9, 2011 at 6:18 PM

There aren’t a lot of guys who are even worse under-performers than Andray Blatche, but Michael Beasley is one of them — and he is the guy AJfromVA wants us to trade for! Not to mention that we are supposed to give up a really good combo guard (Kirk) for Sebastien Telfair, who is one of the worst players in the league!!

Good work there, AJfromVA. You’d make a heckuva GM.

Oh, and then there’s your trade w/ NY and Denver — we give up Blatche and get Gallinari, Chandler and a 3d player. Great idea, really great. That’s bound to happen. Right away. You bet. Good thinking, there.

What’s the point you’re trying to make?

Thanks Tom & Arthritic for cluing me on the trade deadline. I have it marked on my calendar. I hope EG can pull another rabbit out of the hat.

Maybe by 2/15 Andray will either be traded or benched. I’ve never seen an athlete have such a deep, prolonged slump w/o getting benched.

detroit gets troy murphy and johan petro

Denver mostly wants youth — Favors and picks. It’s a shame they have to trade Billups, who definitely doesn’t want to leave (Denver is his home town).

NJ is hoping that having Melo means they’ll somehow be able to sign Chris Paul when he’s a FA in a couple of years. To me that’s the only real upside to the deal, and of course it’s still a longshot. I don’t think Melo is as good as many people think he is, and I believe Rip is pretty much over the hill.

I don’t like this deal for NJ at all — unless it means they wind up with Chris Paul.

From what I’ve seen of Favors, I believe he is going to be a stud. The draft choices Denver receives will include at least one really high one. They have an excellent young point guard to replace Billups — Ty Lawson. Portland wants Devin Harris — so Denver may be able to acquire more by moving him.

proof i hear you man, but why don’t you start following the nets if they make this trade? not to be a true fan or anything, but to support them and get your hopes up about them. because if they fail, you would want that gm out of there just like you want eg out of here, for the same reason, trading away your youth and trying to make a run now, and not succeeding.

like tom, i don’t like the trade for jersey. it doesn’t put them over boston, miami, orlando, chicago, or even the hawks imo. they would be a first round exit in the east most likely (sounds familiar around here doesn’t it lol) and then they will be trying to pick up the pieces from there. billups won’t be there long, rip is fading, so melo is really the only good guy they would be getting for future years, and he can’t do it alone. like tom said, unless they get chris paul (who would be much better off going to new york with amare imo, much better fit) this trade doesn’t do much for them.

and we are going to have to see if this trade goes down as well. melo still has to commit to new jersey long time, and billups has to agree (although i’m hearing he will).

i do like the trade for denver though, although they probably would love to keep billups.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 10, 2011 at 2:56 PM

Gray16 — oh, Denver *will* keep Billups. NJ will buy him out at the season’s end, and he’ll head back to Denver where he wants to both end his career and go into management of the franchise.

What NJ is doing is a classic of how *not* to rebuild. They get Hamilton who is cooked, Billups who isn’t going to stay, and Anthony Carter and Shelden Williams who are expiring minimum salary guys. Essentially, that means they get nothing but Carmelo Anthony.

In return they give up Derrick Favors who is looking like a future star, Anthony Morrow (who is admittedly having a down year), Graham-Ross-Uzoh (no big deal), Devin Harris (hasn’t really panned out in truth) and 2 first round picks (and they will be high ones!).

That means next year they’ll have Carmelo, Lopez (who doesn’t seem to be working out all that well), Hamilton (over the hill but carrying a big multi-year salary), Jordan Farmar, and Damion James — which will be costing them $50m. They will have ditched their first round pick and at least one other, and simplying *praying* that Chris Paul comes to them some day.

Given that Carmelo is over-rated to begin with, as soon as things show themselves as not working, everyone will start saying the “chemistry” isn’t there.

Meanwhile, Denver will have dumped salary, have a young and talented core, and have lots of picks. Excellent for them. Detroit gets well too.

It’s a stupid move for the Nets — and their GM is Billy King, so it’s no surprise.

gray16,

looks like you are following it enuff for the both of us, keep up the good work.

actually, being that no one seems to be good but Mello and Potentially Favors, i guess it does go in NJ’s favor(according to the above analysis)….lol….

The whole point is that stars will follow mello before they follow one on our team…it’s called “STAR POWER”…which we don’t have yet.

Change is what it is, embrace it, get over yourselves, using Tom’s method of reasoning….Billy King is a GM, you’re just a blogger, so that makes him smarter than you just because….LOL

Comment from proofofconcept

OKC is an exception to the norm…..the clippers, portland, sacramento…anymore teams out there have all built via the draft, and really haven’t gotten anywhere.

Where did the notion come from that building via the draft produces championships? The one who said it already recanted the statement to say that okay, you get the “star” player via the draft, and only had two references…out of 32 teams that hypothesis may be an alternative hypothesis. and guess what, the hockey team may not be ready either….just an FYI.

There is no one way, or maybe not even a best way. You deal with your situation by what hand you have dealt to you….but only a few have pretty much “mastered” the concept….that would be LA and San antonio….boston doesn’t count because danny ainge got lucky and really has only won one, Utah doesn’t count because they haven’t even won a championship (and the way it looks may not get one any time soon).

Sooooo who can anyone applaud for being an expert on building a championship team? Outside of the lakers, san antonio and red auerbach?

proof,

star power isn’t everything, location seems to play a big part as well. just look at lebron in cleveland, no one would join him there… if they aren’t going to join lebron in cleveland, is there another star they would join there?

but i won’t disagree that having a great player on your team does intrigue others to join your team… of course, you don’t have to trade for your star, you can always draft him (john wall hopefully).

and as for building a team, i agree, there isn’t a set laid out plan for building a team, you do have to make the best decisions at the right time. as for us, at the moment getting good talent through the draft seems to be the best option though.

and san antonio did build through the draft, so it has shown it can work, you just have to draft well.

@Arthritic last time I check Love was a F/C so what is your point about the Min trade? and they basically get a 2 for 1 with Kirk and Dray. All we need is a back up PG to play like 15 mins a game behind Wall who will eventually be in Top 5 in minutes per game.

Comment from proofofconcept

There was a lot of players/trades that went through Cleveland to try and win that city a championship…are u serious? Shaq only goes to legitimate teams, whether he’s washed up or not, that is significant….especially compared to what they are getting now….refute the hypothesis.

San antonio also has just as many free agents as draft picks. they were one of the dynasty teams anyway, and i mentioned them as elite, so you are only repeating me.

Bottom line is it’s time to stop making excuses for these mediocre players that wouldn’t start anywhere else in the NBA and get the ball rolling…..Ted, go to night school if you have to, get it together…..

Comment from proofofconcept
Time January 10, 2011 at 7:54 PM

sorry AJ, this is not an “all we need” case. this is a start the rebuild with a rebuilding coach, get real wood and let the drift wood (ab) go, and lets see some ball that will make me spend $$ on a ticket for any given game, and not just go when the opponent is the best team and the whole arena is cheering for the visitor…..how demoralizing

Comment from gray16
Time January 10, 2011 at 9:04 PM

proof,

so your hypothesis is “star power” is what convinced the suns to trade shaq to cleveland? ok, but unfortunately, that “star power” brought no one else significant there. there were a couple of free agents who had chances to sign there that didn’t. and in the end, their only star, left, as his team couldn’t surround him with the stars miami could. is that because d wade is the bigger star, or because of the location?

so while i won’t totally throw your hypothesis out like you did mine, i will say mine factors into yours, location does play a part. people want to play in certain locations, like la, like new york. amare chose new york because of the location, it pretty clearly wasn’t because of the money or because the team was doing anything… location plays a part.

as for the spurs, their main pieces (duncan, parker, ginobili, and before that the admiral) were all acquired through the draft. they built through the draft. of course you have to sign good free agents as well, every team does that, even if you are building around the draft. you usually get free agents as role players, just like the spurs did.

and we are only halfway through ted’s first season as an owner, let’s have at least a little more patience than that to expect drastic changes. we already brought in a potential star and shipped out dead weight in gil, so we are making progress, but it’s not going to happen overnight.

Comment from proofofconcept

gray,

what in the haiti are you talking about? shaq isn’t star power anymore, he’s role player going to get a ring. When players have achieved the personal accolades and no ring, they will go where they feel they have the best chances to win. Barley went to phoenix, houston, and there’s a history of players going to other places to get their rings, not where they were drafted at. I honestly don’t think teams are partying/celebrating that they won the ring via the draft, i think that they are happy that they won the championship

In all honesty, I would rather Ted win a championship, then say how he won it, than give us his “belief” and he’s never won a championship. I bet if we told him we will wait and pay to see his team play once they got good, he wouldn’t like that, now would he?

Comment from gray16
Time January 10, 2011 at 10:35 PM

proof,

ok i’m lost on the whole argument now… you started by saying that “star power” helps bring better players to your team, and i was simply saying while it may do that at times, there are plenty of other factors as well.

ted has a belief and a blog, those two usually equal him speaking his beliefs. he’s not forcing anyone to do anything, he just said his belief… i don’t see the point of criticism…

and if you want to wait until we are good to support the team, that’s ok, plenty of others are doing the same thing (although i don’t really call those people wizards fans). but it is a rough time to be a wizards fan, that’s for sure, and it’s not gonna get fixed over night. best we can do is hope that ted, as well as the others in power make good decisions during this stretch so that we can become a better team. but the results aren’t going to show in a half of a season.

and you started the draft topic so it’s fitting for you to end the minor thoughts about it…

Comment from neal
Time January 10, 2011 at 10:54 PM

Proof, and the rest of you just talking about a championship, I’m aiming much lower. I just want us to be competitive in the east. Good enough to make the games interesting and let us watch playoff games every year. There are 30 teams in the league. I won’t be disappointed if we finish 29th.

I still think we’re headed in the right direction. We need to make sure we have several players in place that merit being in anyone’s NBA rotation before we go after top FA’s and topping out our salary cap.

However, if fate gives us an opportunity under the new collective bargaining agreement whereby we have a hard cap and a lot of quality FA’s can be had cheap maybe we should be in the market sooner rather than later.

“1) Have patience. This is currently the most popular statement made on the board. The Wizards are a rebuilding team and patience is needed as the organization figures out which pieces fit around John Wall. However, patience does not necessarily do much to fix the problem as illustrated above, that conventional thinking and coaching is not going to fundamentally change how Blatche or McGee play the game of basketball.”

We get on Flip and he has been crappy but the fact is that he also hasnt had much of a real chance. Gil was a shell of his former self last year, AJ was the horrible no defense black hole, & Caron had regressed tremendously while we see Wood being benched in Dallas. Then this year again Gil doesnt play hard and is struggling mentally with his lack of explosin while a big part of our team was going to be Dray and he looks like crap after the injury.

Dray’s game & mentality is being more mobile then other bigs & beating them off the dribble but because of the injury, he is much slower & less explosive then last year so he cant go by anyone and is too dumb to back guys down & play in the post until he gets some extra quickness back. Meanwhile another big piece we counted on was Howard and we all know about that situation. We just arent going to win alot without Howard and with both Gil & Dray playing like they are or were. Fast forward to now and Dray pretty much still holds the key.

Weve been losing but we are in these games and thats with Dray looking like the worst player in the league. If he can get 75% back to what he was late last year then we look like a different team but thats a big if. Again, I have alot of those games on tape from last year and Im telling you that our Wiz fans forget how good & efficent he was when healthy down the stretch. He looked trimmer, quicker, more sure of himself, and could do a little of everything.

Now he’s heavy looking, much slower, and hesitates every time he gets the ball. Its a different guy but you would be foolish to trade him because chances are with a full offseason he looks good again and probably even better because he’s been humbled and will have somethign to prove. Then like typical Wiz fashion, we see him blowup somewhere else and will then act like he couldve never done that here because of this or that

Oh and Tom… I like Tyson Chandler too, but, he is no longer a spring chicken. NO reason to even consider rebuilding around him. That’s if Dallas is stupid enough to not extend him. Have to ask yourself why hasn’t Dallas extended him. Reason.. Cuban wants to win now. Caron going out is going to have my Pittsburgh boy scambling to replace him. I’m sure he wants to keep Chandler…. but… exceptionally “smart” moves haven’t been his forte to date. One can only hope lol.

Tom… you also have to know this about me. When I see “something like this” that could Really help the team’s effort to rebuild.. ie… getting mucho bucks off the payroll. Comment from Tom Mandel

@ Grif — I just didn’t think Dallas would trade Chandler — *especially* not with the idea that Lewis helps them “win now.” Losing Chandler takes more away from that effort than gaining Lewis.

@ proof — the bulletsforever article is def. interesting. But unfortunately I don’t think Dray *is* an “above average” NBA player :( . I don’t even think he was all that great in the last part of ’09-10. Yes, he was improved, but not nearly as much as e.g. Getabig was trumpeting. McGee on the other hand is already one of the top 12-18 Centers in the league. Consistency and the ability to handle heavier minutes are the issues with him.
