Game Day Pacers

12:01 AM EST….Dave Johnson up late/early but ready for tonight at home against the Pacers. I know with the losses the frustration is building. Going through a rebuild is not easy and this team has dealt not only with a significant roster change but also injuries. I am not trying to make excuses..just stating facts all the while realizing the record is the ultimate judge. I do see signs of progress on defense  and Rashard Lewis is eager to have a resurgence here and to make an impact. John Wall made progress from the San Antonio to the Houston game. It will be exciting to see what this team can do with a consistent rotation. I don’t say that to make predictions. It is about the process. I want to see this team learn and grow and develop and play the right way on a consistent basis. We are on a journey and we are at the beginning.THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from Verizon Center as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE    link at the top of the page.  Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 7:00 PM.

6:50 PM EST Dave and Glenn checking in….starters are in…Hinrich, Young, Lewis, Blatche & McGee…Collison, Dunleavy, Granger, McRoberts & Hibbert.

THE MOST AMAZING STAT OF THE DAY

The Wizards are only 4.5 games out of the playoffs.
Now that is amazing.

We are almost at a full squad with only Hilton and Yi missing due to injury.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 29, 2010 at 9:59 AM

If only Yi were healthy, I’m sure we could be 5.5 games out of the playoffs! :)

Lets see Booker and Seraphin please. Those are the guys we need to play.

Did anyone but me notice Tim Duncan bounce off of Seraphin when he ran into him on a drive? KS was called for a foul, but it was interesting to get a sense of how massive and solid he is. Quick too. Has a chance to be good.

Comment from gray16

we all know flip is a guy who’s going to play the players he feels give him the best chance to win, and he’s usually going to stick to a 8 man rotation barring injury and foul trouble.

so that makes the lineup
wall
hinrich
young
howard
lewis
blatche
mcgee
armstrong
(and thornton makes it 9, yi makes it 10 when he gets back)

there is no seraphin, booker, or H in there unless foul trouble comes into play, or there is 5 seconds left in the half and we are on the defensive end, that’s when trevor seems to always get in.

i say if we aren’t going to use the guys, send them to the d league, let them get some playing time somewhere. booker should just be getting playing time period. but seraphin and especially H could use some time in the d league imo. i’m kind of tired of our consistent ignorance when it comes to the d league… every other team seems to use it, why not us, especially when we got a coach who’s going to use an 8-9 man rotation…

Comment from gray16
Time December 29, 2010 at 11:33 AM

this is a winnable game imo, we just have to come out, execute, and play defense. the pacers are on a back to back after a loss to the celtics.

we have to stop granger, as he goes, so do the pacers. last night he was held to 5-21 and that was a big difference leading to the win for the c’s. we are going to need a wing player to step up and defend him, i believe howard would be a good option to do that. we’ll see how flip handles it.

There’s been a lot of discussion all over Wizards and some other NBA boards about the Wiz wanting to trade Andray Blatche. I’m surprised there’s not more talk about it here.

What do you guys think? And if you are for a trade, whom do you think we would want or could get for Dray? Or for Dray and… what?

Comment from millie mill
Time December 29, 2010 at 12:48 PM

Blatche or McGee isn’t going anywhere!! Who would want them? McGee can jump but can’t hold his position to save his life. Blatche can shoot a little but can’t jump over an apple. Both Basketball IQ is horrible at best. They are the starting PF and C on the second worst team in the league.

Comment from draftazoid

D League= You are not very good or you are rehabbing.
The best ones on that list are Johnny Flynn and Ed Davis. They were only there because they were re-habbing from injuries.
Terrence Williams was sent down TO BE PUNISHED.

No NBA player wants to go down to the D-League.
I can see Hamady being sent down. No way Trevor or Kevin.
They should be playing every game. At least they get to play and beat up Flips starters during practice.

If you were a first round draft pick and you are not injured and you are sent down to the D-League then you were a bust of a draft pick. No first round draft pick should spend one minute in the D-League.
Just IMO.

Every Team in the NBA would offer top talent for Javale McGee.

Word was that Andray has already been on the trade block but no takers, and that was before last weeks incident.

Comment from GrifonRacing

Tom that seems to happen a lot when Seraphin is in :) I remember when Artest (1st game) and Bynum (2nd game) bounced off Kevin as well. The kid is a brick wall.

Guys the D-League is not an ideal place for players to “learn” the game. The teams don’t have the resources or the coaching staffs to provide anything more than giving the players minutes against other D-League players. I’d rather our young guys get less minutes here than what they would there, but, against bone fide NBA players.

Interesting Tom. That one will require a little thought. If you smell something “burning” it will only be me deep in thought :)

Comment from draftazoid

The only untouchable on the Wizards is John Wall.
Javale is close to being untouchable. He has scary potential as a CENTER. Center is the absolutely, without a doubt, the hardest position to find a great player. When you have a young kid that can develop you don’t just give him away.

Comment from Arthritic
Time December 29, 2010 at 1:04 PM

i definitely wouldnt mind seeing seraphin and especially hamady go to the d league to really get some playing time.
its not like theyre doing much sitting on the bench all day so why not let them play a little bit in the d league.

id be more than willing to trade blatche and mcgee for a decent big… if that was possible

Comment from neal
Time December 29, 2010 at 1:07 PM

I’m fine with trading Blatche. I don’t think the way he plays fits with the hard-nosed team play the Wiz are trying to create. Have the terms of his contract been released yet?

I also wondered why the Wiz don’t send players to the D-League until I checked it out. The teams have two underpaid (part-time?), under-qualified coaches for the whole team. It’s questionable whether players like Seraphin and Ndiaye would develop faster there.

I suspect Saunders feels under pressure to win now to keep his job. So he plays Howard and Lewis instead of Booker and Seraphin.

FROM HOOPSWORLD THROUGH BULLETSFOREVER:

“After suspending Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee one game for an altercation outside of a club, league sources say that the Washington Wizards will consider trading either Blatche or McGee in the coming weeks. The team will gauge interest around the league and after shopping the players, decision whether or not a trade would be the right move for the franchise.”

@draftazoid

this is javale’s 3rd year in the league.

offensively he has not improved much at all since his rookie season.

defensively he improved slightly, but still makes way too many mistakes and often looks lost. the fact that he thinks he can block every shot doesn’t help either because it’s very easy to get him off his feet.

It looks to me like we’ve lost Getabig unfortunately. I’m sorry to lose him, and I hope he comes back — and soon!

If he’s looking for an online forum where people are high on Andray Blatche, who for some unknown reason is a fixed star in his firmament, he won’t find one.

For those who worry that we’ll trade Dray, and he’ll become a star somewhere else — stop worrying. I can’t think of a single big in league history that got much better after the age of 24.

Javale is only 22 years old.
He is still 4 years away from prime age for an NBA basketball player (26-28).
Andray is still 2 years away from Prime, although this is like his 6th year here.

Age wise. This is equivalent to being a real rookie after 4 years in college for Javale.
I wouldn’t trade him.

dlts, normally i would agree, but i’m kind of liking wall coming off the bench. kirk IS playing better than him right now, and this allows wall to develop a flow easier i think. wall is still playing a good amount of minutes and is finishing out games, so he’s still getting plenty of important time.

but if hinrich keeps playing as good as he has at the point, i say have wall come off the bench for now, just make sure he gets minutes as well.

Comment from dlts20

Kirk played 38min with 19pts but 0ast for our starting PG and 5bds with a -14 plus minus.

“I’m an extension of Flip. Our game plan is going to be the same,” Wittmann. “He’s still calling the shots. I’m going to do my best to think the way he would.”
Wizards G John Wall is scheduled to come off the bench for the third straight game since missing five games with a bruised right knee. He’s just 4-for-16 from the field in the two games since his return.
“When you lose that conditioning in your legs, that’s what your shot is based on,” Wittmann said. “His shots are right on. They’re a little short, which tends to tell you his legs aren’t where they’re going to be.

Nba.com agrees that Flip Saunders is not the right guy for a rebuilding team, I for one thinks that Earnie also has to go. He was the same one who gave twan and Gil (who was injured at the time) big paydays and traded for miller and foye which resulted in absolutely nothing.

Comment from gray16
Time December 29, 2010 at 7:52 PM

wall had a + rating because he was playing against bench players, +/- is an overrated stat, it really says nothing about one player, it just says how the lineups performed that he was in against the lineups they performed against. hinrich wasn’t the weak link, don’t even begin to think that.

and hinrich got 0 assists, but he was aggressive and helped us with his scoring, as he shot well from both the line and the field. he also added some great defense.

john wall did ok last game as well, but when he had to finish the game against the starters, that’s when he started struggling (coincidence?) he didn’t play any better than hinrich when you factor in his defensive struggles and hinrich not making many mistakes.

and i’m considering a bigger sample than just last game. look at his numbers since gil got traded, he’s been playing great. he just plays a smarter game than wall, wall will get there, he just has to get experience… actually, he will well surpass kirk’s play, but like i said, it will take time. but if kirk continues playing great, let him start.

Comment from gray16
Time December 29, 2010 at 7:55 PM

and trust me, wall will be back in the lineup before long, of course i think it will over nick, not kirk though. as long as nick can’t show he can perform starting as well he was off the bench, he will be coming off the bench i believe. so don’t be surprised to see a wall/hinrich starting combo again, although i’m not really for it, i’m expecting it.

Rare that you can trade for a young, potentially really good point guard.

Comment from gray16

proof, just because you don’t get an assist does NOT mean you are not getting people involved.

look at derek fisher, 2.6 apg, does he get his teammates involved?

now, you would expect hinrich to get a couple assists since he handles the ball so much, but watch the game, the ball was moving.

a point guard’s job is not to get assists, it’s to initiate and run the offense. kirk did not fail against the rockets, how can you even say that…

Comment from dlts20
Time December 29, 2010 at 9:41 PM

Our problem is that not one single person on our roster has a hot J right now yet all we do is shoot J’s and I mean thats all we do. Wall is the only guy who drives and whenever he does then we score but other then that, we dont.

Alot of it is Flip’s stupid system but the players also have to take responsibilty. Dray is making me sick like Gil use to even in his prime at the end. Gil was the biggest/strongest PG out there and dominated guys in the post but got to the point where he was going there less & less and the times he did go there, he just started facing up immediatly. Thats Dray now. He’s either a jump shooter or he drives. The times we do give it to him on the block, he immediatly faces up now.

Flip has to tell him to back guys down like he did alot late last year. He also has to tell both him & NY to keep backing guys down until they make you stop and then do a move. Alot of times Dray & NY will back someone down but they will only take like 2 dribbles and then fade away. NO, keep going until they make you pick your dribble up.

Then we also have to get both NY & Josh to slash. They are our slashers and both are settling for J’s. Thats what the Mavs fans said Howard started to do and they hated it just like we hated Caron doing it. Drive the ball and post up guys. Do this and we will be a different team. Same goes for Lewis. He should kill guys on the block at the 3 spot

Comment from dlts20

our record sucks but we are still only 4 games out of the playoffs. Ive been waiting literally all year to get our real starting lineup on the floor and we never ever use it, despite us losing every single game. Now we will have it and Im interested to see what we do.

Infact, again I dont wish injury on anyone but I hope Kirk is out one more game because I think even if he comes off the bench, they will find a way to still play him a ton. If he misses the next game and we play good then he wont or atleast “shouldnt” steal alot of minutes away from Wall,NY, Lewis, or Howard. They should all get the minutes over Kirk.

Kirk can get the 12 backup minutes from Wall’s 36 and he can maybe get another 15 or so from NY’s 33min while Howard & Lewis split time at the 3 and Lewis can also backup the bigs

Comment from dlts20
Time December 29, 2010 at 10:29 PM

Kirk has played very well but we are an athletic running team and he isnt. He’s also just not better then those other guys I named. its that simple

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 29, 2010 at 10:36 PM

Actually two players of the game — in only *13* minutes, Cartier Martin had 11 points on only 6 shots!!, 3 rebounds and a steal.

But really everyone contributed. Nick didn’t shoot well and only got to the line 2 times, but when you do the other stuff you help your team win — and that’s what he did with 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. An *excellent* effort and especially an excellent 2d half.

Ditto Dray — he didn’t shoot well overall, but he kept at it and improved in the 4th quarter and also got 11 rebounds, 2 blocks, a steal and ONLY ONE TURNOVER.

And John Wall is a heck of a player — especially with the game on the line. That kid likes to win.

Comment from proofofconcept

Comment from gray16
Time December 29, 2010 at 10:41 PM

while i’m not leading the fire flip parade (nor protesting it either) i will say this:

i do feel randy wittman may be better prepared to handle young guys than flip. he’s coming off of coaching the wolves, who too were a rebuilding team, and he imo he had them playing great at some times. he’s not long removed from handling young players, while it’s been a long time since flip has had to handle that type of situation, so it may be more than coincidence that we looked so good under randy. but, it is only one game, so it could just be coincidence…

Comment from AJfromVA
Time December 29, 2010 at 10:43 PM

@dlts20 you see guard situation exactly how I do. I still think Howard should start over Lewis and let Lewis be 1st off bench when McGee comes out and Blatche moves to the 5. I feel bad for Thorton though because as good as he his, it’s really no place for him right now as long as Lewis, Howard, Booker, Martin, NY are here. I only put Martin over Thorton because of his range and set-shooting ability. So maybe we could trade Thorton but then again, we dont really need to be making any trades right now in my opinion.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 29, 2010 at 10:47 PM

dlts20 — “only 4 games out of the playoffs”. We went into tonight’s game with *the worst record in the East.* Stop thinking about the playoffs.

Not to mention that the stuff you write about Kirk Hinrich is so backwards it’s not funny. Kirk has played great basketball the last week or so, and he was playing good ball beforehand too.

On the other hand, Howard should play about 20 minutes a game — he’s just come off an injury, no way he is 100%. Rashard Lewis should play about 20 minutes a game; he had an ok game tonight, but in general he doesn’t have a whole lot left in the tank and it’s pretty obvious.

But you are right that Kirk should not start over John or Nick at this point. And the number of minutes you suggest for him is actually ok — 25-30 a game. It’s just that you don’t seem to like him for some reason, yet he has been one of our best players.

Comment from gray16
Time December 29, 2010 at 10:47 PM

man… anyone else just hear wittman’s post conference comments.

loved what i was hearing from him, i’m glad to have him as a coach, assistant or fill in. he knows this team is young, and you have to K.I.S.S. and that’s exactly what he did and what he was preaching after the game. i like that, i too would like to see him coach out at least our next two games (since we play the same team next game)

Comment from AJfromVA
Time December 29, 2010 at 10:47 PM

Whittman is saying he did nothing different than Flip, but he’s being modest. He let our scorers be scorers. Nick and Dray shot over 20 shots but sowhat they are scorers just like Gil use to. Our Offense is Wall, Young, Blatche. Then our SF (Howard or Lewis) works in there 15 pts. And McGee gives you 10, 12, and 4 blocks. These are your starters and deserve 30 plus mins.

Comment from proofofconcept

a “great” performance by hinrich may not be what the team needs. if he keeps having a “great” performance (s) and the team keeps losing, what’s the point?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 29, 2010 at 11:20 PM

@ proof — actually, the better the players play the more likely you win the game. It’s that simple.

We won tonight because our players played well. So if you have a guy playing better than another guy at a given position then if you play him more minutes you help your team win more.

Now, there can be other reasons to give a guy minutes — I don’t care if Lewis is marginally better than Booker right now, for example; I want Booker. I bet we agree about that.

You could make the same argument about Kirk if you want — we need to see Wall and Nick because JW is a foundation piece and NY is someone we have to make the right decision about. I’m fine with that. But the idea that a guy plays terrific but still he is helping us lose is plain ridiculous.

Cartier Martin… I like him a lot. Everyone (including the coaching staff) sees him as a D-Leaguer. It’s a shame as I really wouldn’t mind seeing him “stick” with the team. He plays great tenatious defense… hustles on every play (he may even hustle during time outs?)… and can flat out shoot the ball. They seem to be qualities NBA teams covet?

Neal & Grifon, why are you assuming we’re going to
stay on the same pace we have been?
We’ve had about 15 different line-ups, Wall has been
out alot, Josh Howard is just coming back.. not to mention, this team has never played together before
this year and we had a big trade.
Don’t you all place value on continuity and chemistry

dayle, I’m not presuming we’re going to continue at this pace. Actually, our D gives me confidence that we’ll gbe doing better.

I think players who aren’t picked in the first round, such as Martin, have an uphill fight. They are seen as marginal and that’s tough to overcome. A few random thoughts on last night’s game…

1) Good job by Javale to neutralize Hibbert – that was a big key.

2) There is a lot better chemistry on the front line with Rashard in there rather than Al. Rashard spreads the floor much more with his 3 point shot threat and because of his length, he is playing good D at the 3. This big front line, which I have been hoping for all year has got to be intimidating to the other teams. Give the coaches a lot of credit for putting Rashard mostly at the 3 rather than at the 4.

3) The great intangible regarding Josh Howard is his knack for grabbing loose balls. Those scrums are big turning points in the game. John is great at that too.

4) The Wiz have really turned things around defensively and at least are competitive in every game. Earlier they were always getting blown out.

5) If Andray could lose that final 10 lbs (and play at 250 rather than 260) all those jump shots wouldn’t be falling short so often.

6) If the team can stay healthy, you have got to be excited about the last 2/3 of the season. The offense will improve and the length and athleticism on D will give the other team fits. Who knows… if the Wiz make the playoffs Flip will be on the short list for coach of the year – talk about ironies of ironies.

7) The next game will give us a good indication as to where the Wiz are. If they can knock off the Pacers on the road then look out!

8) Finally, the fight between Andray and Javale had nothing on the fight a few years ago between Tracey Murray and Rod Strickland. Murray showed up for the next game with a black eye and scratches – Now that was a fight

Totally agree that the defense has greatly improved. I think that is the key to this team winning. Even with the shooting being off last night, we still held Indiana under 100 points, which was great.

My starting 5 would be:

1. Wall
2. Young
3. Lewis
4. Blatche
5. McGee

However, I do want Howard, Martin, Booker, and Yi (when he comes back) to get good playing time also. Martin should definitely be on the floor more. He is currently the best pure shooter on the team. To come in a game cold and knock down a 3-pointer on your first shot is very impressive.

Lester isn’t with us. We released him when we signed Gee. I would have rather kept Lester, but, that’s just me.

Dayle prior to last night it looked like the team was going to continue to “go through the motions”. We really had no team identity no matter what line ups were used. Last night they may have found an identity. Defense. If that wasn’t a fluke and we can continue to build on that defensive performance (from everyone) we may have found a way to win a few more games this year. I still don’t see the playoffs in our future, but, we can certainly look a lot better than we have up to last night.

we’re in the year 2020, we did a megatrade, and we traded jwall and gilbert for rashard lewis (based on his senior high school output). our new coach is randy wittman, flip had a nervous breakdown because he was “that close” to a championship but we kept trying to get younger players and went to find himself in tibet.

The team has been sold to the same firm that does the superbowl commercials (that was the vision, to always have better PR than good basketball players and to land a reality tv show, we were out of the loop for the last three years)

AB being our number one scorer isn’t really that awesome when we see how many shots he takes per game (not a high percentage). AB and Javale play the most minutes (in their positions), so they should have the most and second highest rebounds per game. to not have a double double each game is kind of bad being almost seven feet and over 30 or close to 40 minutes per game. this is an example of when we just look at one portion of the stats, we could be mislead.

Actually, i’m beyond just getting rid of someone for the sake of getting rid of someone. if we don’t get what is needed, then don’t do it, just to ship him out. at this point, i don’t even know what is needed (i actually don’t want to analyze the team right now) because this team only has like one or two pieces that are worth carrying forward, and besides the big three, EG really hasn’t built anything here (no team identity). Do we really want him to help “rebuild”, when nothing was actually built in the first place?

Blatche is shooting at 43%, I’m pretty sure that’s very low for a PF. Every time he misses one of those mid-range jumpers his stock goes down.

I take the public statement as true – that the Wiz are seeing what they can get for Blatche and then will decide what to do. If it’s not a very good deal Leonsis may nix any deal BECAUSE part of the Blatche problem is his relationship with Saunders. If Leonsis doesn’t plan to keep Saunders the best thing may be to wait and see if the Blatche/Wizards problems can be fixed next year.

@ dayle — you write “Tom, do you really believe Nick “didn’t shoot well”? He was fabulous.. regardless of the percentage.”

What can you possibly mean? Nick went 10-26. That’s 38%. It’s not open to interpretation or opinion; it’s a simple fact 38% means he “didn’t shoot well.” He also only got to the line twice; that’s not good either.

But he still had a very good game because of the other things he did. He took charges, he got his career high in rebounds (I am pretty sure…), he had 3 steals. Frankly, I’d rather see him improving in those areas than anything else. We know he can score. His value as an NBA player depends on the rest of his game maturing.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 30, 2010 at 6:27 PM

Last night, Dray played well except for his shooting. But overall, he has had an *awful* first 1/3 of the season. Maybe it’s physical, maybe it’s mental, maybe it’s lingering effects of the injury, maybe… who knows? Whatever it is, he’s awful.

This is his season to *finally* establish himself in the league, and he isn’t doing it. NBA players do not get better after they are 24. And Dray is in his 6th year in the league to boot. He’s gifted, sure. But you can’t count on him.

Still, I think he’ll only be traded if we can get young talent and/or picks for him. He might be just as tradable in the off-season — or just as *not* tradable. We’ll see.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 30, 2010 at 6:31 PM

The guys I’d *really* like to see traded somewhere near the deadline in February — and only for young talent or (more likely) picks — are Rashard Lewis, Josh Howard and Kirk Hinrich.

Hinrich in particular will be in *high* demand to help a team contending for the title, as he is playing very well this season. But Lewis is the most important one to trade, as he has a long contract. I’m sure we’ll make much effort to move him.

Tom, I sort of explained myself in the next post stating
when I’m at the game I don’t see the whole floor as well
as when watching TV and also don’t have the benefit
of the commentators… so I didn’t really notice all the
missed shots.. and the game seems to move so much
faster when you’re there. You’re right, he didn’t shoot
well, even though it looked good to me and he was the
highest scorer.. evidently no-one shot well until the fourth quarter.

Tom, I know you’re an expert and I’m the antithesis of
that, however, I could not disagree more about trading
Lewis, Howard and Hinrich. For your purposes it would
be good because you’ve said you like to watch alot of
young guys develop. But for people who want to see wins, you’d be pushing us a few more years down the
road to being competitive. Fans can’t be expected to put
up with that. You need experience to win games and
you never know how draft picks will turn out and how
long they will take.

as i stated early we need to trade thorton martin and hudson maybe to the blazers for Rudy Fernandez and cash then sign morrison or to the timberwolves for Martell Webster and Sebastian Telfair or the knicks for Danilo Gallinari or the nets for Sasha Vujacic and Stephen Graham imjust saying there plenty of possibilties

With GABBO on hiatus, I’m probably the # 1 Blatche booster left on this blog.

In response to Tom’s post at 6:27.. I think it is an exageration to characterize Andray’s season to date as “Awful”. Somewhat disappointing, yes, but certainly not awful. The guy is averaging 17/8. Dray also gets lots of steals and assists for a 4. That’s not too bad at all. How’s the starting 4 for the Pacers, Josh McRoberts, doing? He’s at 6/5. Could be worse.

My point of contention with Andray is that he has not been able to get back to his best playing weight. That is hard for me the fathom for a professional athlete. That extra 5-10 pounds takes away from his quickness and lift and causes him, I believe, to leave a lot of jumpers short. It could also lead, God forbid, to injury. The Wiz staff need to change his diet and get him at the right weight.

That being said, he is able to hold his own against any forward in the league, and trading him would likely be a big mistake. I am looking forward to seeing him and Rashard play together and that big lineup get better and better.

Comment from neal
Time December 30, 2010 at 9:27 PM

I’m OK with trading Howard or Lewis because they play the same position IMO, and we are relatively deep at SF. I doubt if we could get much for either. Howard will be a FA at the end of the year and Lewis is on a maximum contract.

I would hate to lose Hinrich. We cannot get rid of all our veteran leadership. We must have at least a couple of hard-working role models and we must win enough games so that we don’t develop a losing atmosphere.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 30, 2010 at 9:46 PM

@ dayle — of course, when you’re at the game you’re swept up in excitement if we compete and esp. if we win. Nick helped *a lot*. The biggest thing is how much more *heady* his play is this year. The steals and taking charges all point to playing with a much better sense of the game, basketball IQ, whatever you want to call it.

As to trading Lewis and Howard — first off, Rashard is *not* going to help us; he is way on the downside of his career. His numbers have been going down for a few years, and he was never all that good: he doesn’t rebound well enough for a 4, which is mostly where he’s played. A better 3, but still… not as good as once thought to be.

Josh Howard is 30. His performance has been declining since ’07-08, and now he’s coming off multiple years of injuries. Moreover, his salary is expiring, and I am pretty sure we have no intention of re-signing him. Hence, if we get something for him in a trade, it’s a plus.

I am a big Kirk Hinrich fan; but he will be in demand, and he could bring real value in young talent and picks. We’re not going to win many games this year. Veterans aren’t going to change that. Don’t be in a hurry with this team; enjoy what there is to enjoy — namely the process of rebuilding from scratch!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 30, 2010 at 9:49 PM

Chenierfan — pretty much every single Andray Blatche stat (except FT%) is at or near his career low. Take a look at his assist and steal numbers if you think they’re good. Then take a look at his turnover numbers! He is playing terrible basketball this year.

I wish him well, but this is a guy in his 6th year in the league; it’s time to look reality in the face.

Comment from proofofconcept
Time December 30, 2010 at 10:41 PM

Tom, I agree with you EXCEPT saying that Lewis will not help us. He’s a lot better than most of our roster. However, if he keeps playing well, we may be able to milk him for a draft pick.

I just saw gil rub off a pick and get a layup. Can someon on this staff please teach jwall and our bigs how to set a pick so that jwall can exploit the defense with his quickness in our half-court offense.

In regards to keeping/trading players, if we are losing games, does it really matter if we keep a player such as lewis, hinrich, thornton, HA, Howard? they are not part of our future, so if we can get something, i’m all for it. the ONLY players not tradeable are JWall, NY and then frenchy, everyone else we can get a lot better players or a pick.

He has 30 points, but he only has 4, i repeat 4 total rebounds???? TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE FOR A PF but he has 4 BS? go figure

Howard had 19 rebounds, about 10 offensive. we could clearly see Howard can’t hold Stoudemire on the offensive end, but stoudemire needs to hit the boards more…

Comment from neal
Time December 30, 2010 at 10:52 PM

Tom, I accept your generalization that most players don’t improve after 3-4 years. However, I think there are enough exceptions that each player has to be looked at individually. Against the odds, Young finally learned how to be a complete player. Once that happened his confidence soared, so that now he’s better at scoring also.

Blatche’s biggest problem IMO is lack of self-discipline, both on and off the court. He also seems not to have a feeling of entitlement – that he doesn’t have to obey all the restrictions we all have to live by. Maybe these things won’t change, but maybe a new team or a new coach will let him rationalize behaving differently without him admitting to himself his own faults.

Howard was supposed to be a malcontent when he came here. It seems all that is behind him. I just hope we don’t give Blatche away for nothing to see him mature and blossum somewhere else.
