Game Day San Antonio
8:40 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in from San Antonio where it is NOT snowing. It should be a great night for all of you back east to stay inside and BLOG on the radio. The team arrived here late yesterday afternoon….and that reminds me…I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday…After our arrival here we had an active practice and having Josh Howard andRashard Lewis now in the mix is making a difference. Andray Blatche and JaVale McGeedid not practice last night because they have been suspended for tonight’ s game for conduct detrimental for the team. To call tonight’s game a challenge is probably an understatement as rumors of the Suprs demise have been greatly exagerated. The Spurs are coming off a loss to Orlando–only their fourth of the year– even though they had seven players in double figures. THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from San Antonio as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link at the top of the page. Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 7:00 PM.
6:18 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in from AT and T Center…and ELVIN HAYES IS here.. and he will be our half-time guest…John Wall might play tonight but will come off the bench…Wizards will go with Kirk Hinrich and Nick Young at guards…Hilton Armstrong at center and Rashard Lewis and Al Thornton at forwards….Spurs will have Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili at guards.. DeJuan Blair at center and then Tim Duncan and Richard Jefferson at forwards….remember we start with Flip Saunders comments at 7

Welcome back millie.
In spite of the height difference, I think Booker T is a 4 and Lewis is a 3, based on the way they play. Remember when everyone tried to make Etan T into a PF until they finally let him play where he belonged – center – which he played pretty well when healthy.
Booker won’t be outrebounded by many PF’s, and Lewis doesn’t go inside much anyway.

I hope my fellow Bloggers had a nice Christmas yesterday.
I got an extra special present last night watching the Dallas Cowgirls Choke at the end.
Seeing Ferris Bueler miss that extra point reminded me of Tony Romo fumbling the field goal snap in the playoffs a few years ago. Good Times.
Last night Dallas lost to the worst team in football who was starting their 4th quarterback, a rookie, this year and who looked lke Ben Affleck.
I think Jerry Jones needs a new face lift.

I haven’t heard of Jews trying to eliminate other believers, like the Christians and Muslims. My presumption is that either they did it w/o me knowing or they’ve never had enough power to do so. What say you Tom? Are you just nicer people?

i didn’t take theology, but just be glad you can study whatever believe you want (for the most part) and not be MADE to be a certain religion…having choices is a great freedom…..besides, being in a religion is one thing, studying the word is another. HOWEVER this is a basketball blog, so i’ll leave it alone.

from another blog:
“Will the real leader/captain of this team, please stand up??? Like I said before, no one stood up and no one is standing now.
Veteran influence and leadership/captaincy is no trifling trivial matter. For anyone or an organization like that of the Wizards to misunderstand the importance of this and they have for far too long is just plain pitiful.
It is plainly significant why mostly the same org’s are hugely more successful than others. The have superior leadership and tradition as a constant part of the organization and they don’t leave it to chance that idiocy and foolishness continually rears its ugly head and derails it’s goals and it’s purpose.
THEY UNDERSTAND that they share immensely in the shaping of these young adolescents to not only meet their own goals, but those of the organization as well.
far too long The Wizards have suffered too much crap and it is time for them to bear the responsibility to become a winning organization.
It seems now that Ted has a more immediate problem than he realized. LEADERSHIP.”

Success starts at the top and I think we suffered from Unseld, Jordan, and Grunfeld’s devotion to the dream of “the big three”. I think this year is a probationary one for EG and Saunders. It’s hard to talk about long-term leadership when that’s the situation.
I still wish Flip had let the team choose the captain(s), but that’s water over the bridge. If Wall were playing he would provide leadership IMO because he’s a natural leader. Given that he’s on the bench it’s gotta be Hinrich assisted by the other veterans, Howard and Lewis.
I’m still thinking about religion. You’re so right proofofconcept, that we are very lucky to have separation of church and state. But even where there is separation of church and state, and even where the religion does not condone violence, it’s adherents sometimes get crazy – such as the hindus doing it to the muslims in India.

oh and before i forget, hope everyone had a great christmas!
hope to see john wall back soon, but when the camera flashes to show him, it always looks like he’s focused on the game, attentive to what’s going on, and talking to sam throughout the process. i might just be seeing what i want to see, but if that is what’s happening, that’s great. hopefully when he comes back, he’ll have some more knowledge that he can exhibit in the game.

My depth chart (presuming everyone is healthy):
Wall, Hinrich, Hudson
Young, Martin
Howard, Lewis, Thornton
Yi, Seraphin, Booker, Blatche
McGee, Armstrong, Ndiaye
I think Yi should be given a thorough chance to show he’s an NBA player before turning him loose at the end of the season. Of course, part of this matter is how to use him. I certainly don’t know and I’m not sure Saunders does either.

The bigger question is what are the odds that one of those guys lose there jobs now. I think Lewis will start at the 4 and it will be hard for Flip to bench him after that
Comment from neal
Time December 26, 2010 at 5:29 PM
Of those 4 PF’s I actually think Booker is the best player at present, but the other three have more potential and there’s no time like the present for seeing if they can develop it. The best way for Blatche to develop is being a bench player for a while IMO.
Comment from WE WANT A WINNER
Time December 26, 2010 at 5:48 PM
I don’t want Lewis to get any starts at PF because he might be kept there for a while. Its kind of like what is going on in Cleveland, JJ Hickson fell out of favor with B. Scott and and undersized A.J. is right back at the 4. I don’t want Lewis to be at the 4 just because Blatche is suspended. Even though Booker is short, he is our best option because of his power, you can be short but nor frail. Boozer, Landry, Barkley.

Oh well… we’ll get to see a lot of Trevor and Kevin; that’s the good part.
neal — in every faith, more people preach peace than practice it, more people preach tolerance than practice it, more people tell others to love their neighbor than do it themselves. This is as true of Jews I’m sorry to say as it is of Christians, Moslems, Hindus, and more.

A few thoughts…
1) If JaVale and Andray can bottle the level of aggression they had Friday night against other teams this team would be in much better shape.
2) For – all you folks you say Trevor should start over Andray, here’s your game. At this point in his career, Trevor is just a “hustle” and “energy” guy and has not yet developed the skills to be a starter. The thing folks have trouble with Andray is he doesn’t seem to be an “energy guy”
3) I hope Ted is seriously considering a name change. Ever since the name change to the Wizards, with its associations with the occult, all types of bad luck both on and off the court has befallen this team. Perhaps a name with a positive connotation such as Washington Patriots or Diplomats would work.
Anyhow, I promised another poem about the Wizards a few days ago. Here it is…
Sung to the tune of “London Bridges Falling Down”
Wizards’ season falling down, falling down, falling down
Wizards’ season falling down
What a bummer
Build it up with high draft picks, high draft picks, high draft picks
Build it up with high draft picks
What a bummer
High draft picks might be Kwame, be Kwame, be Kwame
High draft picks might be Kwame
What a bummer
Build it up with a new coach, a new coach, a new coach
Build it up with a new coach
What a bummer
The new coach might be Tapscott, Ed Tapscott, Ed Tapscott
The new coach might be Tapscott
What a bummer
Wizards’ season falling down, falling down, falling down
Wizards’ season falling down
What a bummer

i definitely agree with what you said about trevor booker.
so they talk about him being an undersized 4 (landry, bass and millsap)
trevor doesnt have the offensive game that those guys have.
in terms of athleticism, he is definitely in their league, if not more athletic.
i like him getting good minutes off the bench for now. i dont think he’s good enough to be starting.

Season’s greetings to you all !!!
Can anyone give a clear explanation for the suspension of Blatche & Magee ???
I agree with Neal success starts at the top, so Mr. Leonsis would you please FIRE these two clowns (Ernie/Flip) already !!!
These two should have been let go at the end of last season. Ernie had his chance to build a team, that ship has sailed. Why give him a second chance to screw things up again. It’s not fair to the next GM to let Ernie make all these decisions and the new GM has to come in and clean up the mess before he can start molding the team the way he wants it to be.
Arenas is gone but the team’s still having disciplinary problems, WTF!!!
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 26, 2010 at 6:57 PM
Arthritic — no one thought Millsap had any offensive game when he came out of college. Ditto Landry for that matter. He’s not a jumpshooter at this point, I agree.
“I don’t think he’s good enough to be starting” — I wouldn’t start him on the Lakers. What is “good enough” to start on a 7-20 team? You think we’ll win more games with someone else? How have we done so far? Time to start Trevor.

When the Washington Wizards traded Gilbert Arenas to Orlando in exchange for Rashard Lewis, their coach, Flip Saunders, acknowledged the team was in full demolition mode. “We’re totally in a rebuild,” he said. Nuggets coach George Karl doesn’t believe in rebuilds. “I’ve never been a fan of this ‘rebuild mode,’ tearing it down and going to the bottom,” he said. “I don’t think you have to go to the bottom. You can go down a little bit, but then bounce right back up.” from the Denver Post
I agree with Karl but I would add that losing is something that has to stop or it will beome contagious. Wizards are getting use to it and the only thing that will help them is a change of teams, which in turn will mean forever rebuilding just like the Clippers, Golden State , and Timberwolves. That is my worse fear when teams rebuild with mainly youngsters.

The only thing I would fire Ernie for is giving Andray that 5 year extension. (Work is they are trying to trade him BUT no other team wants him).
He did draft John Wall and our front court of the future in Trevor Booker and Kevin Seraphin.
Trading for Kirk was a great move (Chicago paid us $6 million and the #17 pick (Kevn Seraphin) to take Kirk.
Flip is here for the next 3 years.
If I am going to fire anyone it is the medical staff.

ok, they are missing alot of outside shots now, the spurs are..but so are we..too many forced shots that are long..off the back of the rim.. not positioning ourselves for rebounds.. everytime we shoot, half the team goes down the court before it reaches the rim

dejuan blair is a great player, he plays great defense and gets good rebounds… best drafting team in the league? i think that’s a given lol

arrghh… ok, we are , in a sense, beating ourselves now.. being clumsy with with ball.. very happy with the first 3 quarters of this game.. i think we started playing “desperate ball” too early, rather than playing smart, and capitalizing on the spurs 4th quarter negative shooting percentage

Hinrich played well. He is a point guard. They need to use him as such. For the most part a respectable game. No dumb stuff. Spurs made a lot of jumpers. Parker got in the lane as he usually does and make everyone look slow.

why do we see this but flip doesn’t. we’ve been saying that for the past 10-15 games (booker needs minutes).
watching hawks game. didn’t they build through the draft? they are like a player or two from going for a title. good every year, but just not good enough. Horford isn’t a center, when will their GM figure that out?

proof, imo horford is the hawks best player, he’s not the problem. the problem isn’t the regular season, they do what they need to do then.
the problem for them is the playoffs, which is when you need your proclaimed superstar player to step it up and show why he’s your best player. the problem is joe johnson, who’s another overpaid player who cannot take a team to the next level.

Not bad, considering.
First time I’ve appreciated Armstrong.
I really hope there’s a place for Howard next year. I think we have a good veteran threesome (Hinrich, Howard, Lewis) to go with the younger guys.
Notice how much emphasis SA puts on the 3-pointers? Not many mid-range jump shots for them. I wish we would shoot more 3-pointers.
Got to give Saunders credit for better D.

@ proof — Gary Neal is 26 years old. He went undrafted out of Towson in ’07 and played in Europe, where he developed pretty well. His agent got him a shot w/ the Spurs this Summer, and he stuck.
He’s now played what 500 minutes in the NBA? He’s playing pretty well so far. Has nothing to do with whether we evaluate players well or anything else about the Wizards.

Much better defense the last few games. We held them under 100. Not many teams do that.
Solid games from Hilton (I hope he is ok)… Kirk… and Rashard. Good games from Josh and Trevor.
It was a great first half. We stayed right with them.
John Wall looked very rusty (expected), but, did show some play that gives us all hope for the future.
Nick had a poor shooting night. It happens. He played a good defensive game again. He couldn’t guard Manu, but, I don’t think anyone else could have tonight either.
Some solid plus’s to build on. Trevor will earn his time. He is too good not to

thanks for the info on neal, tom. if he graduated in 07 i didn’t get to see him play in person in college. i don’t know why the name neal sounds familiar though from the players i’ve seen play at morgan… ah well, neal seems to be a good pickup from the spurs either way, even though they didn’t draft him.
and i’m now less surprised they got him from europe, since they seem to get many of their players from overseas. they have some of the best overseas scouts in the nba imo, they’ve gotten a number of good players from the euroleague.

it amazes me how we knitpick the verbiage around here and don’t focus on accountability, i have seen more foolery around here than anything else.
we don’t have a development staff at all. everyone with any type of skills has to come from outside of the organization. its a shame that HA isn’t wanted by other teams and he’s like our best reliable big man. its a shame that mcgee or ab, or any of our bigs don’t take offensive fouls, besides what they are taught elsewhere. it’s a shame flip still doesn’t mix in the young when he has veterans to play.
right or wrong, gil had to fake an injury to get ny playing time? gil had to get ny on the floor instead of flip? We are patting this team on the back for losing by 12? Lewis got a double double, but he shot 19 times to get 21 points.
Are we all losers to the point, that we sit here and applaud a player, when a team loses? we are 7-21, forget the excuses, put a team together. that’s what ernie, tap, the scouting staff, etc are getting paid to do. stop bringing in players nobody else wants and go scout. all this wait for two years, wait for next year, wait wait wait is hogwash. either you are putting a team together or you don’t know how. if you have to blow up something after seven years, you never knew how to put anything together in the first place.

Armstrong has to develop SOMETHING to contribute to the offense. He often gets the ball in point blank range from the basket, gets his shot blocked, and doesn’t even draw a foul. That’s too reminiscent of Michael Ruffin. On the other hand, I remember E. Thomas, who would somehow get the ball in the hoop past defensive players who towered over him.

Poc… this is a year to see who fits and who doesn’t. Build from there. Wins are insignificant. What we hope to see is players like Trevor and Kevin advance. We don’t expect Josh or Shard to be in our future plans… but.. you just never know. Can Wall stay healthy? Can “everyone” on the team get along enough to put that “enthusiasm” on the court and not in a bar’s parking lot?
Time will tell

My sentiments exactly POC, GrifonRacing why is Ernie, Flip, & Tap evaluating more talent for someone else to come in and just blow it up!!! It’s a waste of time. There should be another Mgmt/Coaching staff in place now picking which players & which direction they want to go in.
And I think wins and loses are always significant, It’s damn near January and we still haven’t won a road game !!! That says some thing about the Mgmt, Coaching & player’s that are here !!!

Hey, I need all you guys out here to use the steam you’re blowing off to clear the foot and a half of snow from my 80 foot long driveway!!
Oh, I know… send Dray and JaVale. That can be their punishment for staying out late!
Pam McGee: “Young men, you go clear that driveway! Get moving now!”
JaVale and Dray in chorus: “Yes, mom…”

I think the work by management since the ownership change looks pretty good so far.
The previous year, directed by Mr. Pollin, we made an effort to add players that would allow us to compete right away, sacrificing long-term goals. Can’t blame Abe, really. He had given *a lot* to this franchise and this community. I’m sure he knew he was dying and wanted something good to look at on the way out.
It didn’t work out very well, and Ernie had to blow up the team — we got rid of our top line players and got little in return except the prospect of future flexibility.
I wonder if any of you understand how *little* we had at the end of last season. We had Dray, Nick, and Al, all of whom were thought by most people to be under-performers. We had Gil, who was in big trouble and anyway not the player that once he was. We had JaVale a unique athlete but raw. And we had Quintin Ross.
That’s it. There are very few people who would have thought of those pieces as the foundation for a team. Very few.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 27, 2010 at 9:08 AM
Ernie turned Quintin Ross into Yi, and got the Nets to pay the difference in salary. Yi is not a good player, but he is better than Ross.
Ernie acquired Kirk Hinrich and a mid-first round pick for nothing whatsoever. A future 2d round pick or something.
We got lucky and got the top pick in the draft. If we’d stayed at #5, we’d likely have picked Cousins, a problem child but very very gifted. If we’d fallen in the draft, there was *not one player* picked in the rest of the lottery who has turned out to be productive right away. Not one.
With the 17th pick, we got a big with real promise. Some of you wanted James Anderson, who is injured. Maybe you’ll turn out to be right. But Kevin Seraphin looks to me like he has a chance to be good.
With the 23d pick we took Trevor — as I’ve said before I can’t see a player I’d rather have than him who was taken in the following 10 picks.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 27, 2010 at 9:17 AM
Finally, Ernie added some one-year pieces that were cheap and reliable (HA) or who could add some this-year entertainment value (JH).
And he managed to trade Gil, no easy task, and increase our flexibility in the deal.
That’s 3 rookies who look like foundation pieces, and some helpful veterans at essentially no cost. In the meantime, Nick looks like he has a much better grasp of the NBA game, and JaVale has shown that he can be very productive.
Despite all this good work, we are still in the first year of a rebuild. We’re not very good, we’re not going to win many games, and there isn’t some magic cure, despite what you think. Above all, the “Melo he a beast” school of analysis just doesn’t get it. A top-dollar, long-term contract for a veteran would be a terrible idea right now.
So relax, because this is a marathon not a sprint.

wow, not only does our two bigs have one of the lowest bball iqs for a starting combo, now they are displaying one of the lowest iqs all together…
those two really need to grow up, on and off the court.
