Game Day Bobcats
6:10 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in…and yes I have recovered from Saturday night but I must admit it wasn’t easy. I really wanted that win and I was proud of how the team responded missing not only John Wall and Yi but also the production of Gilbert Arenas. Tonight we could see the debut of Rashard Lewis who the Wizards picked up in the Arenas trade. As we talked about on the radio broadcast Saturday night, we wish Gilbert nothing but the best. As some of you know we opened our broadcast with a tribute to Gilbert as a thank you for all the joy he did give us with the Wizards. As one of our post-game callers said on Saturday…Wizards need to make Saturday mean something by giving the same kind of effort tonight. The return of Josh Howard certainly was a big boost and he was able to shine after such a long layoff because of his professionalism and preparation. And how about Nick Young. As we have discussed on the radio, his play is about so much more than his points. Young is scoring, which is what he does, but he has improved on defense and in his commitment to rebound. Also need to give a shout to Hilton Armstrong who did the dirty work like taking charges and blocking shots to help the Wizards have a chance. THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from Verizon Center as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link at the top of the page. Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 7:00 PM.
7:00 PM Dave and Glenn checking in…starters are in..Rashard Lewis will not play….Kirk Hinrich and Nick Young are the guards…Al Thornton and Andray Blatche the forwards and JaVale McGee the center…..Bobcats will go with DJ Augustin and Stephen Jackson in the backcourt..Dominic McGuire and Boris Diaw are forwards and Nazr Mohammed at center

Was not too upset with the Miami game the other night. We played hard and should have won the game.
Good to have Josh back and he should get more minutes tonight. We definitely need Wall back, because Hinrich is not producing on the offensive end like he should. In playing an entire 48 minutes he only had 13 points (shooting only 25% from the field and 0% from three point range- 0 for 4). Josh Howard played less than half of those minutes and had the same amount of points.
Once Lewis gets here, I would start:
1. Wall
2. Young
3. Howard
4. Lewis
5. Blatche

This lineup would give us the best chance of winning because of the outside shooting and each player’s ability to get to the basket and finish. Also, this lineup will give us the best possible defense on the floor, with the exception of Blatche, who did not do as bad on defense the other night against Miami as I expected. Hopefully though, he can improve his defense and low post ball handling skills as the season goes forward.
Again, very, very happy with the Gilbert trade. He was a great liability on defense.

Tonight’s lineup:
Blatche
Lewis
McGee
Hinrich
Young
Future lineup
Blatche
Lewis
McGee
Young
Wall
Josh and Kirk (first off the bench)
Lineup we may see on the court a lot during games
Blatche
Lewis
Howard
Wall
Young
with Hinrich, McGee and Armstrong off the bench.
I just hope they don’t mess with Javale’s head too much during this transition.
It get’s even more complicated when YI comes back.
This is of course what I believe Flip will do.
For me I would have to find a way to get KS into the lineup because he is a banger.
Trevor kind of loses minutes now. He is a real tweener. not a sf and not not a prototypical pf.
I need to know aprroxiamately how many games will JWall miss with the knee bruise?

I would like to see AB closer to the basket so he can get us more rebounds because Rashard is going to stretch the floor with his range and style of play. We don’t need to have both forwards far from the basket on rebound opportunities.
When Josh, Lewis and Nick are on the floor with AB and Wall or Hinrich we should not have any problems finding a open man and a more fluid offense.
We just have to make our mind up who is going to sacrifice and hit the boards more. I really think AB can help the team more by taking less shots and concentrating on hitting the boards. He is now playing with two guys(Lewis and Howard) that can create their own shot so AB does not have to put that head down and spin and throw up these shots with all this overspin on the ball. Just keep it plain and basic. Javale and Armstrong need to do the same thing as well.

It’s going be wierd going to the game and knowing that Arenas is not part of the team anymore. I was always a true fan of his through the good times and the bad. Wish the best of luck for Gil! No time to goof around aznzero. We need a win tonight!
I don’t knwo why I keep feeling this. If we can become a better rebounding team we have the opportunity to be more successful. The lack of rebounding is one of the reasons we have not been able to extend many double digit leads this year. We have had opportunities to increase that 6-8 point lead to 12-16 points but we are not protecting the rim. Especially when our shots are not falling.

Rest Of Season Predictions
We are now at 6-19 I think, & 4 games out of the final playoffs spot but this upcoming game will be the 1st time all year we have everyone. Unless Flip is an idiot, I see us now starting Wall-NY-Lewis-Dray-McGee. Ofcourse things could soon change with Howard getting healthy and Flip seemingly wanting to bench McGee. I honestly wouldnt be shocked if Flip says forget it and just turns us into the Knicks or the old Suns teams and starts Wall-NY-Howard-Lewis-Dray, and says lets just run all game.
No matter what we do, does anyone see us making the playoffs? What do you predict our record to be? I said the last few games that if Gil was going to play like that & coast then we wont beat anyone. It hurts us more then helps. I think he was doing that because he knew he was out and he will really turn it up in Orlando but I also think it helps us and gives us a normal sized roster. Dray probably gets more post touches, we get some real wing guys with height to play beside Wall, and we have all atheletes who can run with Wall.
We looked solid last night without Wall & Shard. Im in the minority in thinking that Shard will look alot better then he did in Orlando. He wont be the guy on the Sonics but he will be very solid and people will be happy with him. If fully healthy, can we make a run or do you guys just think we will suck? I think Flip was weak and never held Gil accountable in terms of playing D & playing hard. I think last night you could see that these guys will play hard, play defense, and Flip can hold them somewhat accountable. Everyone is Also in there normal roles and should be no more small ball or lineup mismatches. The East sucks so I think we could still make it. What say you? Give me our record for the final 57 games and tell me if we make the playoffs

i dont think i usually agree with you but i definitely agree with your post. i think a lot of people are liking the
wall, young, howard, lewis, blatche
lineup. they are definitely the 5 best players and you just have to start your best players. i honestly think our record is pretty much up in the air. it really depends on the growth of wall, young, blatche, mcgee (hopefully), booker and seraphin. i think for the remaining 57 games (29 home 28 road games im guessing) our record will be…
BEST case scenario: 20-9 (home) 10-18 (road) that would put us at 36-46
WORST case: 14-15 (home) 3-25 (road) that would be…
23-59
not sure if 36-46 will be enough to make the playoffs but i honestly think if were going to be bad anyways id rather see my “worst case” scenario take place so we could get a high lottery pick at the draft next year.
of course, as a wizards fan id love to be wrong with my “best case” scenario in which we win 36 games. who wouldnt be happy with us winning more than that?

You put your finger on the critical thing IMO, dlts. Is Flip tough enough to get our guys to play D and stay w/i the system? He wasn’t with Gil, but neither were others.
You guys have sure gotten down on McGee in a hurry. He definitely should not be benched. Regardless of mistakes, he has to play to develop and McGee playing his best is a big part of our hopes for the future.

i dont mind his “mistakes” on defense.
but as i pointed out before
i dont like him because of his selfishness
1. he continues to take jump shots near the free throw line (took another one in the miami game early in the shot clock… obviously missed)
2. he dribbles the ball up by himself on a 2 on 1 fast break with nick young to his right. james jones had been set in front of javale near the basket. had he passed to nick it wouldve been an easy two. but he elected to “jump over” james jones… and that didnt end up pretty.
these arent “mistakes”
these are him being selfish and this is coming from a guy who says he knows his role with the team is to “rebound and block shots”

Just wanted to say that I’ve had a great time being a Wiz fan for the last few years and I really enjoyed this blog in the past few months since I joined it. The main reason I became a Wiz fan was Gilbert and now that he got traded I can’t promise that I’ll keep posting/reading the blog as often. I wish the team all the best though, and I do think that it has the most dedicated fan base so it’s been great knowing you. The Wiz have a great roster and should do excellent in the future. Peace.

McGee still needs to learn post moves. His offense still needs much improvement (shooting touch, footwork, etc). Dray playing center gives us more points in the paint. However, Dray will not give us the shot blocks and intimidation that McGee gives down low.
As I said earlier, hopefully Dray gets tougher on low post defense. He seems to have lost weight now, and is more quicker than he was say 4-5 weeks ago. I really have no big problem with Dray’s offense. It’s his defense that has always been a concern.

Also, I like the lineup of
1. Hinrich
2. Young
3. Howard
4. Lewis
5. Blatche
for tonight. These are our best players available, so they should start. Lewis has struggled adjusting to the SF position this year as Bass has been getting more burn at the PF spot in Orlando. Why would it be any different here in Washington? Keep him playing the 4 where he has shown he can stretch the floor and be effective. Howard needs to be on the floor at SF anyway. off the bench we should see
1. Hudson
2. Cartier
3. Thorton
4. Booker
5. Mcgee

No chance Andray plays Center.
Zero.
1. We would have the softest front court in the NBA with Blatche and Lewis. (Super Duper Soft)
2. McGee is a better Center than Blatche.
3. Seraphin is also a Center.
So we will stunt the growth of our two Young Centers just so that Blatche can play Center.
It’s pretty simple. Blatche and Lewis have to fight it out on the court. The best one plays and the other is a backup.
In fact, Trevor Booker is a tougher Power Forward than Andray or Lewis.
Andray better toughen up. Their are players that want his spot.

Mr Leonsis I remember this do you?
Ted Leonsis on Arenas trade rumor: “It isn’t true” By Michael Lee
Wizards owner Ted Leonsis shot down an Internet rumor on Wednesday that the team has engaged in discussions with the Orlando Magic about a possible trade involving Gilbert Arenas. Leonsis also hoped to quell the perception that the team is looking to move the three-time all-star.
Leonsis has been adamant that the Wizards have no plans to move Arenas, saying last month that “Gilbert is not going anywhere.” In his e-mail, Leonsis said that he “really likes and respects” Arenas and “there are no trade discussions going on.”
“The team is trying to rebuild and Gilbert is one of the leaders on the team,” Leonsis wrote. “Gilbert is the best player on the team right now.”
The Magic blog Orlando Pinstriped Post reported that the Wizards and Magic have kept an ongoing dialogue about Arenas. Leonsis wrote in an e-mail, “It isn’t true. I wouldn’t tell you if it was true but I am telling you that it is not true.”

zoid,
Blatche has played center before and is a better center than Mcgee. The only thing Mcgee does well at the position is block. He makes way too many mistakes to start. Not only that but Seraphin is a PF. He has played Center for us but he is a PF.
Blatche and Lewis are both MUCH better than Mcgee at everything outside of Blocking shots. Lewis is not a strong rebounder but has been playing on the wing much of this year while bass has played inside. what was your saying again? “Play the Best. Play to Win. All the time” well that is the best lineup there is. period.

The only reason Divac was a pretty good center is because he was surrounded with Superstars in Chris Webber and Ron Artest.
I don’t see that type of cast in the Wizards to allow Andray to be a GREAT Center.

I cant say who is the better PF out of Blatche and Lewis because they have different attributes. Blatche has more post moves and rebounds better. Lewis shoots better and stretches the floor. but i think flip will start both. Maybe starting Blatche at 5 will bring him in the post more and keep him from shooting too many jumpers. could be beneficial.

Blatche is one of the main reasons we almost beat the Heat the other night. He’s a huge asset to our team and I think he’s just now returning to form physically. He was carrying extra weight due to the foot injury over the summer. I like Andray to start at the 4 and bring Lewis off the bench for scoring.
Tonight should be interesting. We just have to pretend we are playing an upper-echelon team and we have a great chance to win the game. We lose close ones to LA, ORL, and MIA…yet get blown out by TOR, SAC, and NJ. Okay, we did come back against the Nets, but still lost the game. It’s all mental.

“Droid” — best of the new nicknames for Draftazoid (tho I also like “Zoidy”).
If we don’t start McGee — who was by far our best player through the first 20 games of the season — we may never win again this season!
JaVale has taken a step back the last week or so, yes. He’s not really a conventional C in a lot of ways, yes. But he has unique abilities and for a good stretch of games this season *he used them.*
We need John Wall back on the floor. We’re going to have a hard time until then (and even after then too!).
Lewis is a *much* better 3 than 4, btw — much better. And Howard is a much better 2 than 3. I’m still starting Nick and letting Josh be our 6th man — he just got back, let him get minutes off the bench for a while.
In the end, however, it doesn’t matter much. We’re going to win @22 games this season whoever starts, subs or finishes.

I’ll probably pick up the radio tonight around 7:30…a couple questions. Can you tell us how Josh Howard did this past Saturday? How well you thought the team played together? I see that Blatche took alot of shots, did well and played some D too. Can you tell us how you saw his play and contributions? What is going on w/ Javale? I haven’t seen many highlight reel stuff since that foul-line flub a few weeks back. Has he been trying to keep a tight lid on his flamboyance or is it he just isn’t getting the minutes. This sucks. I was really looking forward to seeing Wall return tonight and the arrival of Lewis but neither guy will play. Just cant get it all together and once again we prove to have the worst medical staff in basketball, always misdiagnosing everything.
Well, one thing I am looking forward to seeing is the return of Hudson. Unless Flip goes big with Howard at the point at times, Hudson will get all of Kirk’s backup minutes. Hudson was a stud in the SL and hit big shots in the SL & Preseason but didnt look like a NBA player at all when the season started.
Its always great when you get a 2nd chance and hopefully he makes the most of it and show why he led the Nation in scoring while also showing the ability to run the team. Its his job to lose. If he’s great then he’ll stick. If he sucks then we will probably have someone in here very soon.

@ magicman — you are right that Lewis can’t contribute much, but you’re wrong about his natural position — but I’m used to the “forget the facts; here’s what *I* think” approach.
Rashard Lewis averages *for his career* slightly more than 6 rebounds every 40 minutes. No, you cannot be an effective power forward if that’s how you rebound. He also has a relatively low FG% that doesn’t work for a 4 — bigs usually shoot a high %. At the 3, his skills are more useful.
All that aside, he’s 31. His numbers have been going down for years. We didn’t look to get him; we looked to get rid of Gilbert. He won’t help. But with any luck he will be gone next year or the following one at the latest.

Rashard Lewis has not averaged many rebounds because coaches have not used him as a traditional 4. They have used him to stretch the defense which takes him out of position to rebound. Havent you seen any Orlando games? You should know that Rashard plays on the wing MUCH more than most Power Fowards. Not to mention when you play on the same court as Dwight Howard every night, its not going to be easy to have a high rebound rate. that numbe will go up with Javale as our leading rebounder.
As for Nick, with his hot shooting and defensive play he is definitely playing at an all star level. but, playing at all star level is different from being an all star which he is not. but teams are game planing for Nick now. he is scoring in bunches against great defensive teams. In games he has started, we look to be a completely different team. heck we are up by 24 points right now. have we ever been up that much in a game this season? I dont think so. Not to mention He probably shoots a higher percentage than just about anyone who takes as many jumpers as he does. It seems to me that you are the one ignoring the facts.

gray16- you are right. But lets look at a good rebounder. someone who averages 10 rebounds, usually 3 of those are offensive. if you add those 3 to Lewis’ total of 4 you get 7 rebounds a game which isnt bad considering he plays along side Dwight. A challenge inone in the NBA to play with Dwight and not see their rebounds per game total drop. dont get me wrong, Rashard isnt a “strong” rebounder, but he is a better 4 than 3. Orlando’s own coach has said this.. but im sure the bloggers on here know much more than that old timer van gundy..

look at career stats, they tell part of the story….regardless, he’s here now, hopefully we use him at his strengths rather than “trying” to make him a four.
the rebounds are basically his career avgs, i would say look at his career numbers, since orlando didn’t use him in the way that gave him all-star status.
plus when roles change a player has to adjust. i.e. tonight gil had 8 pts 3 assists at the half and someone said “only”…lol…he doesn’t have to be superman, they already have one, he only needs to play a role. same thing for lewis in orlando…so the numbers really don’t matter….as an end all to be all.

Do you realize that over the last 5 games, we’ve outscored our opponents by 5 points. Why… we should have won all those games. We must be a really good team.
I’m sure with a different coach we would figure out this point distribution problem, you know get the points into the games where they matter. Flip is terrible at that point distribution thing. Any other coach would be better. Why does he make us score all these useless points on a night like tonight, and not let us score a few more on nights when it would mean another win? I bet it’s because he doesn’t like Dray.
Ok, enuff joking — nice win!

Easy trip home tonight.
That was a great defensive effort by the Wizards, and that is what won the game.
As much as I liked Gil, everyone looks more relaxed and focused since he is no longer a part of the team.
We still need another point guard until John gets back. We can not afford to play Kirk the vast majority of the minutes at the 1. Barring a blow-out, we need some solid backup at the one…maybe Lester is the man. We’ll see.
The Wizards team has reverted to the last 32 games of the 2009-2010 season. However, it no longer belongs solely to Andray; it now belongs to Andray and Slick, which is what I had predicted as a winning combination for the past three years (I’ll acknowledge that they have improved over that span).
Defensively, the players are more often where they should be. Now Saunders appears to have a clue as to what is going on. Whether the Wizards were playing a match-up zone or a switching man-to-man, every player appeared to understand his role. Good coaching job Flip. (Good grief, did I just post that?). Hopefully I can pat him on the back after Wednesday’s game also.

After Saturda’y gut-wrenching loss, tonight’s game felt like a vacation.
As well as Nick is scoring, his defense is just as impressive. He always had the tools to play great defense and now he is.
It is also impressive how well Josh is moving about the court. He is showing no ill effects from the injury and has been a big plus.
It will be interesting to see how Rashard fits into this Team. Maybe Flip will go big with Rashard, Andray and Javalle.
Welcome back Lester. He played so much better tonight than his last tour here. Keep it going.
For the Bobcats, can someone explain to me why Livingston is not getting 30 mins a game. That guy can run a team much better than Augustine.

We are a “fun” team to watch again. We actually “move”. So much for a competitive ball game. Nice to see everyone “move” again on both sides of the ball. The Wizards are now playing with some energy. That alone should win us some games.
Our defense is getting better by leaps and bounds. I don’t care how good or bad a team is… if you hold them to 11 points in a quarter it gives you a very good chance to win.
Shard isn’t going to be a difference maker. He is here because his contract expires a year earlier than Gilbert’s did. I want him on the bench with Josh getting the minutes at the 3. If the Wizards want to use Lewis to spell Josh ok, but, do not play Lewis over Howard.
I won’t be posting anymore because I’ve obviously fallen over dead…… @Gabbo …. “Good coaching job Flip”
Is it possible one player was such an influence over the team that when he left it allowed the other players to feel a little weight lifted off their shoulders and feel they could play a little more free? Seems far fetched, but, something sparked our team.

Dang, who would have thought that one player can stress a whole team out.
I was at the game tonight and everyone looked relaxed and played hard.
We made Charlotte look like piece of dog doo doo.
I remember a week ago when Javale stepped in front of a pass and both John Wall and Gilbert were standing there calling for the ball. Javale passed it to Gilbert and he drove it the length of the court.
I knew that was the problem right there. Even though John is the point guard, Javale went ahead and passed it to Gilbert. Gilberts presence made Javale pass it to him instead of John.

Chicago has said they would love to have him back. Derick Rose says they miss him on the team and his contributions.

With the Wizards you just never know. Since John Wall has been getting all of these ticky tack injuries… well reported injuries… does the team have a different agenda? Were they holding Wall out until they felt like the team was a team? It feels to me like they are almost holding the kid in “reserve”. They knew early on he was up to his hype. After his triple double he seemed to start having foot, knee, bone bruise issues? I’m just a little skeptical given he is a 20 year old kid. Did they want to get rid of Arenas before they brought Wall back? It just seems very strange to me how things have transpired. I guess if John has a miraculous recovery and is back on the court next week it will tell me. If he isn’t, maybe, the Wizards may be holding him out for justified injuries. That worries me the Most. 20 years old and has three leg or foot injuries? I’m hoping it’s strategy and not real injuries…

Lewis is not taking Andray’s spot.
I am not a big Andray Fan but I do know that he is a better Power Forward than Rashard Lewis.
Rashard Lewis is a wizard for only one reason.
That is because the Wizards were looking for a way to unload Gilbert and Lewis just happened to make things work out.
Ernie Grunfield, as it was pointed out, did not mention Lewis until really far into his press conference.
Lewis was the way to a means.
I hope he can contribute at the Small Forward spot. I do not want to see him playing the 4.

He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.
With Rashard Lewis here and for the next 2 years the possibility of resigning Josh is going to be hard to do.
If Josh plays great for the rest of the year then Siyanora. Enjoy your next team because he will make a whole lot of money somewhere else.
If we also play him and are not playoff bound then we have just stunted the growth of our young players because we gave minutes to an unrestricted free agent.

I enjoyed the win last night. Started not to go. But I felt a win last night. I enjoyed the fact that it was not crowded last night. nice commute on metro.
It felt good to se the guy’s with nice energy last night.
This was a total team win. I though one time Kwame and Javale were going to go Ali vs frazier.
Kirk had a steady rein on the offense last night. AB was good. but I still have a problem with him being so soft when he tries to finish around the rim. If he was more coordinated to do operate straight up instead of all the spin moves and finger rolls he would have the potential to be all star.
i noticed when the Wiz started building the lead with his starters in the 3rd quarter he stayed with them. He did not tinker with it. That was a good thing to see some chemistry unfold without substituting every2-4 minutes.
We have the Bulls on tomorrow and Rashard Lewis should be available to play.
One last thing I noticed JWall was really excited about Lester Hudson play on last night. It was good to see him back in uniform with us.

I have actually been trying to figure out what will happen with Thorton, Howard, and Rashard all possibly playing the 3. Right now we are last in the eastern conference which is bound to land us a high draft pick. The top 4 players entering the draft (my opinion) are SF’s. Perry Jones, Harrison Barnes, Terrence Jones, and Tyler Honeycutt. All BIG players at the SF position. Perry Jones is 6’11!! Barnes, Honeycutt and Terrence Jones are 6’8/6’9.. So what happens if we land a top 4 or 5 pick? These are guys that can come in and produce right away. seems to me like Thorton would be first on the list of players on the way out since Howard can play the 2 and relieve Nick without missing a beat. then you can have one of these young Forwards backing up Rashard.

And i almost forgot about CJ Leslie who could be that 5th SF in this draft and the 5th overall pick. Not only does he probably has a few NBA dunk champion titles in his future, but he played for the same Team in North Carolina in High School that John Wall did. Holy springs. He is probably the most athletic player in this draft.

Really hope to see Rashard Lewis debut tonight, and hopefully John Wall comes back as well! It was a tough loss on Saturday against the Heat, but it was nice to see Josh Howard get in for the first time this season and put up some nice numbers! With Arenas gone and Rashard Lewis on the team, here is a potential lineup I can see the Wizards running with this season:
1. John Wall (of course)
2. Josh Howard (I like the idea of having Hinrich and Young off the bench to have a solid 1-2 going)
3. Rashard Lewis
4. Andray Blatche
5. Javale McGee
