Game Day Lakers
7:06 AM EST….Dave Johnson checking in….Let’s hope the Lakers had a long day at the White House…We know first hand how good the defending world champions are after last week’s visit to LA. But we also know what a difference effort and intensity make as demonstrated in the Wizards second half rally in the close loss to the Lakers. Flip Saunders stressed the importance of not gettingbeaten on effort plays against the Lakers, rebounding, and not allowing the Lakers second shot opportunities. Al Thornton also talked about the importance of being able to respond to the runs the Lakers will inevitably make. Health is a concern so big games from Thornton, Nick Young and others will be important. Andray Blatche is out with a sore left knee…John Wall is questionable with a sore right knee…looking forward to tonight….THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from Verizon Center as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link at the top of the page. Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 7:00 PM.
5:00PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in….we will update on player’s helath as we know it. But again Andray Blatche is not expected to play because of a sore knee…..Things can only get better…. I coached a Captial One Bank sonsor game and lost to the team coached by Big George Muresan
6:45 PM EST..starters are in…Wizards will go with Gilbert Arenas and Kirk Hinrich at guards…Yi and Al Thornton at forwards and JaVale McGee at center…Lakers will have Derek Fisher and Kobe Bryant at guards…Ron Artest and Lamar Odom at forwards and Pau Gasol at center

Yes, JWALL has it right. When the ball goes up, both teams have the opportunity to win. We almost did it in LA. Tonight lets get the job done right in our own house.

We are on pace to win 22 games, which is what Tom predicted. Rats!
EG says we’ll be better “when we get all our pieces together”. We heard more than enough of that waiting for the big three to produce. I’m tired of it. Most of the teams in the league have injury problems. Get over it.

Also, I’d like to see Cartier get some playing time.

Forget all that, I just care about specific things that will help us win. Obviously we need to get more healthy but most of all, we have to stop settling for Jumpers. Thats all we do. Gil had a great driving stretch like 5 games ago where he started to attack & get to the line alot like the old Gil. Now he’s again attacking less then he did at his worst and when he does, he has no confidence. You can tell he’s just looking to pass even though he has a chance at a layup so it always gets stolen.
If he is force to lay it up, he’s scared & unconfident so he doesnt even get off the ground and just throws up a prayer. For some reason we always set Gil’s screens so he has to go to his left which gives him no chance of finishing. If he’s gimpy then atleast set the screens for him to go to his strong side which will make his chances alot better to finish and make his passes easier. Overall he’s just been looking alot less explosive lately so hopefully he gets it back. The bad thing is that I can see him attacking again this game but LA is the longest team in the league so it will probably be hard for him to finish which will quickly kill his confidence again.
Im sick of seeing Dray, get it on the block, only to back out, do some crossovers, & fadeaway. Back the guy down and go towards the basket or drive it to the whole. He looks like a 7ft Jamal Crawford at times. Its sicking. Alot of it is Flip’s fault. He’s definitely not preaching enough about us driving obviously & most of all his system is just setup for jump shots. We all know our IQ sucks. NY needs to take the blinders off and realize that he can pass sometimes. Both he & Gil need to realize that if you catch it off the curl, you dont have to always quickly pull up. If the defender is trailing then they should keep on going to the rim.
1 thing I really hated last year and again this year is that our guys never ever ever hit the 1st cutter. We have alot of plays where a guy cuts to clear out the lane and then the real curl guy comes behind it. Still, sometimes that 1st cut is there and its a guranteed success if you can make that pass. The problem is that to make it you have to do it immediatly, have confidence, and sometimes be tall enough to see in traffic. Thats why I loved the Livingston pickup last year because I said that he could be the guy to pull it off since he’s a true PG, has that height, & has that quick passing reflex. Sure enough he did and we got a ton of baskets or drew alot of fouls like that. Guys need to see that on film & make that pass

I will say this though. There is 1 thing that is very 50/50 to me right now and could either kill my confidence in the season or take it through the roof. Alot of people have been waiting for Howard to come back and that will make us better but I read his comments about how he cant make any shots right now which made me say that this guy wont help us any time soon, if this year at all.
On the flip side that comment made me think about Gil & my overall philosophy which I have gotten away from. Gil played solid in the Preseason and very well in that 1st game against NY but has struggled since, espically with his J. It makes him look like a shell of himself and its only going to get worse.
However, after that 1st game against NY, I said something that I always live by because I see it all the time. I said that mostly every guy looks great in that 1st game back because of the adrenaline & so on but then reality sets in that theyve missed alot of time and it takes them awhile to look that way again. They will get there but most likely they will play like crap alot until they get back. Thats for normal guys, let alone Gil who just hasnt played that much at all the last 4 years.
Basically I expect Howard to look very good in the 1st game & might have another good game or 2 but reality will then set in and he will look average at best at times. The good thing is that like Gil, if Howard’s shot isnt falling he can still have a good impact on games and Josh should still get alot of lay-ins from Wall pushing the rock & him slashing.
Most of all though, I think Gil will soon break out. I think he had that good start and then reality set in. Then the more he plays the more he will come back to him and he will start shooting the ball well, make less turnovers, and just overall look better. Its always like that for guys coming back. Therefore all we have to do is try to get healthy & all these guys will look better & better as the year goes on. No other team can say that its 4 best players are at there worst right now and will look better & better as the season goes. Wall, Gil, Howard, & Dray will look much better later then they do now, if they are healthy

Hope to see Nick start tonight! otherwise we will probably go down quick in the first qtr. Wall is turning out to be pretty tough mentally, and pretty soft physically. whats up with all these fragile players on our team. Nick, Mcgee, and kirk seem to be the only guys who drink their daily dosage of milk.
on that note, lets get a win tonight. and try not to break, bend, bruise, fracture, sprain, twist, aggrrevate, hyper extend, bust, cut, or scrape anything. thank you

If Gil isnt lagging then maybe he can go off tonight because with Wall out maybe LA puts Fisher on Gil instead of having Artest on him like last time. Atest is a little too big to stay with Gil but he can crowd him with his height & lead him right into those 7footers.
Gil also cant attack the rim off the pick & roll as much at the 2. Maybe at the 1 he gets guarded by Fish more and can also get some of there bigs in foul trouble if he’s right. Problem for us though is that even if we got one of there bigs in foul trouble, Bynum will most likely play tonight so they have enough
Comment from dlts20
Time December 14, 2010 at 2:44 PM
I dont mind Yi getting the start. I think Flip looks at it like LA is so big so you might want a 7 footer to start. Its the Lakers so you may want a vet to start. Yi can shoot it & isnt reluctant so we might use him to run some pick & rolls with Gil. Yi also wasnt playing horribly when he was healthy so maybe Flip is hoping that he looks better with the rust off & his conditioning is back.
With all that being said, he better be on a short leash. If he stinks then pull him for Booker. Booker needs to be more aggressive on Offense though. He has 3pt range yet he hardly ever will even shoot a 15ft open 2. He has to take & make that shot

whats up yall,
tough game tonight, and with dray and wall out, we really don’t stand a chance.
let’s hope gilbert goes off tremendously, but with kobe guarding him, it will be tough. i’d like to see nick start with gil so we would have an advantage in the starting lineup, if we start kirk, gil, and thornton, the lakers will have no trouble guarding that lineup. with nick in, either fisher will have to guard nick or gil, and that would give us an advantage.
hope to see javale have a good game, he needs it since he’s been having some rough nights as of late.
let’s see some hard work out there, that’s all we can ask for.

And to think the Lakers turned down trading Bynum for Kevin Garnett. Boston then swooped in and the rest is History.
The Lakers would be going for their 4th Championship in a row right now. Kobe would be going for his 7th Championship.
Doc Rivers probably would have been fired by now because he would not have won that Championship.
All of Boston would say fire the coach. It’s all his fault.
What a difference a Superstar makes on your teams performance.

Landry Fields to be the next Gilbert Arenas!
Because Fields was a 2nd round draft pick he was only offered a 2 year contract.
He becomes an UNRESTRICTED (no qualifying offer, no team options- NADA) after only 2 years.
That is the horrible part of 2nd round draft picks. You find a diamon in the rough and then POOF- He’s gone!

zoid, I dont think youre right. I think because of how Arenas turned out, they have now changed that rule. or its like youre allowed to go over the cap to resign him
Comment from dlts20
Time December 14, 2010 at 7:44 PM
What is the “Gilbert Arenas” provision?
With the previous CBA it was sometimes possible to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets their original teams couldn’t match. This happened when a player was an Early Bird or Non-Bird free agent (see question number 19) and the team didn’t have enough cap room to match a sufficiently large offer. For example, Gilbert Arenas was Golden State’s second round draft pick in 2001, and became an Early Bird free agent in 2003. Golden State therefore could only match an offer sheet (or sign Arenas themselves) for up to the average salary (see question number 25), which was about $4.9 million. Washington signed Arenas to an offer sheet with a starting salary of about $8.5 million, which Golden State was powerless to match.
This loophole was addressed in the current CBA (although not closed completely — see below). Teams are now limited in the salary they can offer in an offer sheet to a restricted free agent with one or two years in the league. The first-year salary in the offer sheet cannot be greater than the average salary (see question number 25). Limiting the first year salary in this way guarantees that the player’s original team will be able to match the offer sheet by using the Early Bird exception (if applicable — see question number 19), or Mid-Level exception (provided they haven’t used it already).
The second year salary in such an offer sheet is limited to the standard 8% raise. The third year salary can jump considerably — it is allowed to be as high as it would have been had the first year salary not been limited by this rule to the average salary. Raises (and decreases) after the third season are limited to 6.9% of the salary in the third season. The offer sheet can only contain the large jump in the third season if it provides the maximum salary allowed in the first two seasons. In addition, the offer must be guaranteed and cannot contain bonuses of any kind.
If the raise in the third season exceeds the standard raise (8% of the salary in the first season of the contract), then they place an additional restriction on the team. In order to determine the size of the offer the team can make, they don’t fit just the first year salary under the cap. Instead, they must fit the average salary in the entire contract under the cap. So a team $8 million under the cap is limited to offering a total of $24 million over three years, $32 million over four years, or $40 million over five years. If the offer sheet does not contain a third-season raise larger than 8% of the first-season salary, then they only have to fit the first year salary under the cap.
Putting this all together, if a team is $11 million under the cap, wants to submit a five year offer sheet, and wants to provide a large raise in the third season, they can offer a total of $55 million. If the average salary is $5 million, then the second year salary will be $5.4 million (8% raise). This leaves $44.6 million to be distributed over the final three seasons. With 6.9% raises in years four and five, the entire contract looks like this:
Season Salary Notes
1 $5.0 million Average salary amount
2 $5.4 million 8% raise over season 1
3 $13.907 million This is the amount that yields $44.6 million over the final three seasons with 6.9% raises*
4 $14.867 million Raise is 6.9% of season 3 salary
5 $15.826 million Raise is 6.9% of season 3 salary
Total $55 million Average is $11 million, which equals the team’s cap room
* If you want to know how I got that exact amount, (for a five year offer) you solve for (5R – 2.08A) / 3.207. R is the room the team has under the cap. A is the average salary amount (e.g., $5 million). The 2.08 represents the salary in the first two seasons (100% of the average, plus 108% of the average). The 3.207 represents the salary in the last three seasons, using 6.9% raises: 1.0 + 1.069 + 1.138 = 3.207. Similarly, for a four year offer you would solve for (4R – 2.08A) / 2.069.
For the team making this offer, this contract would count for $11.0 million (i.e., the average salary in the contract) of team salary in each of the five seasons if they sign the player. If the player’s prior team matches the offer and keeps the player, then the actual salary in each season counts as team salary. The player’s original team is allowed to use any available exception (e.g., the Mid-Level or the Early-Bird) to match the offer.
Since a team must fit the average salary from the entire contract under the cap in order to offer the large third-season raise, a team must have some amount of cap room above the average salary amount in order to effectively utilize this provision. For example, suppose the average salary amount is $5 million, and a team with $5.1 million of cap room wants to provide a five year offer sheet. If they want to offer a larger-than-normal third-year raise, then their cap room will be determined by the contract’s average salary, so the total contract must pay $25.5 million or less. If they offer $5 million and $5.4 million in the first two seasons, then that leaves just $15.1 million for the final three seasons — so there must be a decrease in salary in the final three seasons. A team in this situation is better off providing the standard 8% raise in the third season, which does not trigger the cap room requirement based on averaging. In this example, a five year offer starting at $5 million with 8% raises would total $29.0 million.
As I said above, the loophole was addressed with this rule, but not closed completely. This is because this provision is primarily intended to protect teams from losing their successful second round picks, who are Early-Bird free agents after two years. There are several situations where a team still might be unable to match an offer sheet:
* If the player is a Non-Bird free agent and the team already used their Mid-Level exception to sign another player.
* If the player is a Non-Bird or Early Bird free agent with three years in the league (this rule applies only to players with one or two years in the league).
* If a team has two Non-Bird free agents with one or two years in the league. They can use the Mid-Level exception to keep one of them, but would lose the other.
This provision also ensures that second round picks can’t cash in with a maximum salary sooner than first round picks can.

if the lakers want to stick fisher on gil, be my guest, he can get lit up like smush parker did 3 years ago lol
lakers don’t need kobe to score, they have gasol, their best player imo. and him going against yi, talk about field day.
kobe loves to shut down the opposing player, and they aren’t going to put fisher on thornton or gil, so he’s guarding one of them. could be thornton though, i wouldn’t be surprised by that.
but if gil starts getting it going, kobe’s putting himself on gil, believe that.

The only chance we have is Gil getting hot. The good thing is when he shoots this bad he usually tries to change his shoes or something and come out alot more aggressive to start. He shoots more & moves alot quicker. In his prime he would go off for 20 in the 2nd half. Now its more about his start to the 2nd half. If he has success with the aggression then he will play well but if he misses his first couple of shots, or has a turnover, or LA goes on a run, then he will go in the tank.

@dcbutler — getting Yi and Hinrich doesn’t hurt our cap room. Yi is expiring, and Hinrich will be traded.

After the first quarter, the Lakers basically coasted. If we made any kind of run, they stepped on the gas for a few minutes.
Gil had another in what is now a long string of ineffective games. Hinrich played poorly. And their two bigs, Gasol and Odom, played well. End of story.
But I’m liking my team anyway. Booker had a very solid game, and Seraphin had an outstanding 15 minute stint. JaVale was very good too. Why did he only get 29 minutes, I wonder? I’m really liking those three young players, and with John Wall they are the core of the future Wizards.
I don’t know whether Booker can play the 3, but he can’t be any worse at it than Al Thornton, whom I would like to *never* see play again in a Wizards uniform. He is terrible.
Maybe a trade will go down, but who would want one of these guys?
Sorry to see Yi get hurt. For him, and because I *don’t* want to hear Ernie talk about “if we have all our pieces together.” I want these bad players to GO. Don’t let the door hit you in the butt on your way out.
Who knows? Maybe we’ll trade Dray. But again, between getting a raise to $7m and multiple years and getting next to nothing done on the court, it’s hard to see how he’d appeal to anyone. Ernie likes Dray almost as much as Getabig!!

I will post occasionally this season when I have something positive to say about our team.
Seraphin and Booker appear to be “keepers”. Booker keeps getting more and more comfortable out there and it shows in the more complete games he is having. I like that he is tough as nails.
My favorite play of the evening….. Seraphin had just come in and Bynum was licking his chops. Bynum gets the ball the left elbow with Kevin guarding him. Bynum thinks he is going to run the kid flat over on his way to an easy two. When Bynum drove hard into Seraphin the kid didn’t even move. The look on Bynum’s face kind of told the story
Bynum not only missed the shot Seraphin got the rebound.

Tom M., From what you wrote, the time you posted it, and the fact that you didn’t post anything until well after the game was over, I’d say that you have yet to see the game and you are telling us what we all could see by reading the same box score you read.
The best basketball coach in the world couldn’t have directed the Wizards to a win over the Lakers tonight. It certainly doesn’t help your chances for a victory when you are playing the defending world champions and you are without your starting point guard and starting power forward, and probably the near-future 3-spot player also. That does not, however, mean that I have changed my thinking about Saunders. The Wizards will not develop into a winning team with him as the head coach.
Booker had some really nice minutes; he hit the boards strongly. His downside is experience. With Yi’s injury tonight and Andray’s knee being in bad condition, I suspect that Booker will get some serious minutes against the Nets and the Heat. I also liked what I saw from Seraphin. He, too, is a scrapper, and he also needs some game time. I think he should get some minutes during the next couple of games also. Sorry to say that Al does not contribute much at all. I understand Saunders’s reluctance to start Slick and not have much offense coming off the bench, but until Josh is ready to play, I’d like to see Slick start and see if we could build a lead for once.
Right now, no one player can stop Slick. He beat everyone Phil used to defend him in the first half, including Kobe, so the Lakers double-teamed him whenever he got the ball in the second half. If Gil and Kirk could have made some shots (combined 8/25) this would have been a different game. The Lakers shot FORTY free throws compared to the Wizards 16. The officiating truthfully was horrible.
The Wizards played some nice man-to-man “D” and then reverted to the zone when we started to collect fouls on our bigs and when Yi hurt his knee. Gasol and Odom positively killed the zone by simply finding the open space for 8-footers and lay-ups.

I’d hate to see Hinrich go in a trade, but I guess it would be in our best long-term interests. I guess we’d get an over-the-hill player and a pick. The dangers, as others have said, is that we don’t keep enough veteran glue to be competitive and our young guys get used to losing.

The play of Nick Young this season is an interesting reflection on the make-up of this blog.
Previously, some bloggers looked at Nick’s stat line each game and wanted him traded for anything the Wizards could get. Other bloggers looked at Slick’s tremendous potential and advocated for him for the past couple of years. This year we seem to have had a meeting-of-the-minds. Suddenly, Slick is everyone’s poster boy. While I’m glad for that, it really does point out the different camps on the blog.
Some bloggers are understandably focused on the results …did the shot go in…what is the shooting percentage. Other bloggers look at the players and see the artistry of their work; appreciate the skill required to get that shot off, even when it doesn’t fall; recognize potential that will develop into success if given an opportunity. We all want to see the Wizards get that big “W” after every game. However, some bloggers, while surely disappointed with a loss, are thrilled to have been able to see the effort and the skills of the players. I guess it is the difference in perspective…Is it art, or is it science, or a combination thereof.

I like Armstrong’s game. He’s a “banger”; he’s agile; he’s quick, and he does a lot of things on the court that might go unrecognized…he sets strong picks, and he disrupts a lot of the opponents plays when he is on defense. If a coach decided that Armstrong was a “go-to” player, Armstrong could be a double/double guy.

Neal… I consitently beat Mr. Hotel at Horse LOL.
Gabbo? Hilton is a servicable player, but, a “banger” is just a little far fetched
Interesting “Nick vs. Bloggers” thing Gabbo. I had so much hope for Nicky after seeing how darned atheletic he was after we drafted him. I don’t think with that quick first step toward the hoop… the quick step back… and the almost undefensable fade-away anyone can stop him when he is “on”. That was a given from almost day one. What I like about him “today” is that he is now playing with a little fire.. something we have never seen from our Nicky. Very Refreshing. He is playing great “on the ball defense” against almost everyone (if not the primary reason a significant one to eliminate the zone entirely)… he is not only getting the rebounds and steals that “come to him” he is actually hitting the floor fighting for them.
IF Wall can stay healthy… I wonder… the 1st pick? Hopefully not the Greg Oden syndrome… We have one good core to rebuild around. Wall, Nick, Trevor, Andray, Kevin, JaVale…

@ getabig — no, I watched every minute of the game. I didn’t post until it was over, and I almost never do. I just can’t click into the keyboard and pay attention to a competitive contest.
You do learn something about players by looking at their numbers, yes, but I watch basketball for the incredible pleasure of it, and the pleasure of a box score is pretty pale in comparison!
If I haven’t watched a game, I say that I haven’t watched it.

@ getabig — “We all want to see the Wizards get that big “W” after every game. However, some bloggers, while surely disappointed with a loss, are thrilled to have been able to see the effort and the skills of the players.”
You can put me in that camp (although I think you meant me in the other one?).
As to Nick Young, in my case at least I believe I have consistently agreed about his gifts and skills. And I have a very fond regard for him too — based above all on what hilarity he brought (w/ his straight man Dom) in the videos made his rookie year.
I’m fascinated by what’s happened in his game this year. And, from the snatches one gets in interviews and from watching his court demeanor, what’s happened to him as a person. He is much more of a grown up basketball player in both senses this year.
The 3 things I’d point to as most important are his *high* level of hustle and effort, the fact that he now communicates on court and points out defensive and other issues, and the fact that he is finally getting some rebounds, steals and an occasional assist. He still needs to improve in this last area — he has a 7’0″ wingspan and is incredibly quick — but in all he’s doing *good!*
So I don’t see the 2 schools of thought you seem to see. I just see an improving player, so I say he’s improving.

I like Armstrong’s game too — but I don’t think he has the upside you think he has, Getabig. His hands aren’t good enough to be a featured player on offense.
Armstrong’s size is ok, and his basketball intelligence is very good. He is almost always doing the right thing. He’s an ok rebounder. He has made a few jumpers lately; I’ve seen that too. But then he doesn’t draw much defensive attention, so they are usually open “opportunity” shots.
At his salary, he is a very serviceable player.

i felt javale was making a lot of mistakes out there. so i think even while his stat sheet is decent, when you consider the defensive mistakes he was making, and the way seraphin was playing, javale got less minutes.
plus, it was pretty much a matter of quick foul trouble for javale. he sat down quick in that first quarter and sat the rest of it, which didn’t help his minutes.

I wasn’t suggesting that Armstrong should be “the” go-to guy, but rather that he has the talent and attitude to be included in the offense to the extent that the Wizards could sometimes get the ball to him intentionally, rather than accidentally. He is a very athletic big man.
I think it must be very difficult for any of the younger players to develop confidence while playing for Saunders.
I agree with gray16 that Javale makes a lot of mistakes on defense. I think that he feels that even if he doesn’t play good position defense on his man he’ll still be able to block the shots. Sometimes it even looks as though he gives up position and invites his man to shoot so he can attempt a block.

I’ve seen that too, getabig — it’s probably his one worst habit. He has shown that he can change at least some of these habits (not nearly as many totally goofy shots for example), perhaps he’ll change this one as well.
Thing is, even w/ the mistakes, on balance he is contributing hugely. We need him in the game for more minutes, imo.

Keep in mind the Wizards are building for the future. So here is my list of players that maybe traded. I think the Wizards will be looking for some sort of draft pick to go along with a short term contract player.
Untouchables:(by ranking order)
#1 John Wall
#2 JaVale McGee
#3 Trevor Booker
#4 Kevin Seraphin
Trade Bait: (by ranking order)
#1 Nick Young
#2 Kirk Hinrich
#3 Andray Blatche
#4 Cartier Martin
No value/throw-ins:

Yi Jianlian

Put me in the catagory who honestly doesnt know. I definitely dont think he’s tanking it until he gets traded because no one is going to trade for him if he sucks. I dont think he’s tanking it so he doesnt get traded either because that just makes no sense.
I think its either the knee thing & his physical stuff comes & goes with the wind or its all mental. He has no doubt had some games where he moved alot better then he is now. It wasnt prime Gil but it was still enough to be good. Now he looks like Deion Sanders with that turf toe injury where it seemed like he gained a permanent limp in his run. He has the speed of a PF right now in a PG’s body and is drawing good defenders so he sucks.
The #1 thing I have always hated about Gil is that he seemed to be mentally weak. He never wanted to do the things that it took to win titles and thats one thing but he also would suck anytime he had any kind of minor injury coming into a game. He’s also one of the biggest confidence guys in the league. If he starts stinking it up then he goes further in the tank instead of the other way.
One thing that Im really starting to hate is the Jason Campbell crap though. I was a big fan of JC but I started to turn on him when he never took responsibility. Nothing was ever his fought. All the int’s were on the recievers, on the line, coaches not opening it up enough, no running game, and so on. Gil is doing that same thing now. Everytime something bad happens, he’s blaming the young guys. Then the media ask him about scoring more and he tries to fake & say that he doesnt want to do that because he wants to play a team game when in reality if he was healthy & confident then he would be trying to get 40 all the time. He just cant right now for whatever reason.
Maybe he needs to sit again for awhile beause he’s not moving well at all or maybe he just needs to get mentally tougher. We hear all this stuff about how he’s blowing by guys & dunking in the Summer. I think it may just be an adjusment for him playing against guys in real games, at real speeds, and are big. I think he could turn it around soon but he has to do it on his own, mentally

tom, i wouldn’t be against giving mcgee more minutes, but last night you have to consider the circumstances.
mcgee was in early foul trouble, which took him out much of the first quarter and some of the second.
and seraphin was playing better than mcgee. he wasn’t scoring as well, but he was rebounding better and playing things safe. and when the wizards weren’t making mistakes and instead just playing a grind it out game, they were in it. it wasn’t until the wizards started gambing on defense and letting the pace get to quick that the lakers went on their run.
if you look at the +/- (not saying this is the best way of judging) javale was -13, armstrong was +1, and seraphin was -2. i think when javale came in the game we started making mistakes and the lakers are one of the best teams in the league to make you pay for your mistakes.
if we hadn’t made those mistakes, we would’ve probably still have lost, especially with kobe getting hot like that, but we would’ve stood a much better chance.
so like i said, give javale the minutes, but last night i completely understand why he only got 30 minutes.

Yi Jianlian to miss next two to four weeks with sprained MCL
By Michael Lee
Yi Jianlian may have to wait until March 20 to get his first shot against his former team, the New Jersey Nets. Yi will stay behind as the team hopes to end a 12-game road losing streak against the Nets on Thursday after an MRI revealed that he has a sprained right medial collateral ligament. Yi said he would likely miss the next two to four weeks, which puts his availability for the Wizards’ next game against New Jersey on Jan. 7 in doubt.
Yi was injured in the first quarter of the Wizards’ 103-89 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers when Ron Artest fell on the same knee that he hyperextended on Nov. 13. Yi was forced to miss the next nine games, but he had come back to average 7.8 points and 5 rebounds in his next four games. When asked if he was disappointed about missing out on the Nets, Yi replied, “Things happen.”
Yi, who was acquired from New Jersey last summer, added that he didn’t exactly have the Nets marked down on his calendar. “For me, right now, I’m looking forward to every game. I’m trying to get healthy, get back soon on the court,” Yi said.
Coach Flip Saunders said the Wizards will also likely be without John Wall and Andray Blatche against the Nets. “I don’t think we’re going to have John. He didn’t do anything today, just a little bit of shooting but not much. His thing’s a little bit different, because of the tendonitis, doing things, he could wake up tomorrow and be a lot better. He doesn’t have anything structurally, where Dray’s had more fluid and those things. It swelled up a little bit last night after our game, sitting around for three hours…it’s always scary when you have to go fly, up in the air the pressure and the thing might balloon up on us. We’ll have to make a decision on that.”

i think we should just give wall about a week off, and bring him back starting off with 25-30 minutes per game, no more than that for about 3-4 games. he just has jumper’s knee which needs rest. not a big deal, but let’s just give him rest, he’s not helping us when he’s not healthy, so might as well get him as healthy as possible.

Even though my favorite player is in the NBA is in town tonight. I am hoping the Wiz can pull the upset at home. I am still waiting on the Wiz to play their best game of the season that has a win attached to it.
Could this be the night. I sure hope a certain someone is not saying this is not a game he expects to win.
On any given day or night any team can be defeated.
