Me trying to stay up and watch the Wiz when their on the west coast just doesn’t mix. I totally missed the Phoenix game(It was my son’s birthday + watching football games) & when we played The Lakers & Kings, I fell asleep mid way threw both. (guess I really didn’t miss much) Hopefully we can get a win tonight it’s going to be tough though, the Knicks are playing some good ball.
Lets win in spite of the Coach…. GOOOOOO WIZ!!!

@ Mr. Know it All — you did miss a great third quarter performance vs. the Lakers. We had a chance to win that game down to the last couple of minutes.
Turnovers and lack of rebounding killed us, but we looked very good all the same. Especially Wall, Booker and Young.

The Knicks are a complete surprise. Partly people had underestimated Raymond Felton, and partly their rookie Landry Fields, picked 36th in the draft, looks like a perennial all-star — so far he is playing like one of the best players in the league at the 2-3.
But we’re eating home cooking — lets get them!!! Need an outstanding game from John Wall for starters.

Look what a 30 point a game low post scorer can do for your team.
Remembering free agency and how almost no one wanted Amare.
Everyone was saying how bad it was for the Knicks to sign Stoudemire.
He single handedly changed that franchise.
The Knicks are looking great.
What do you think would happen to our franchise if we stuck Carmelo at the 3?
Same thing but only better

Don’t give too much credit to Raymond Felton and Landry Fields.
You stick a Superstar on any team and everyone gets alot better.

Put Lebron in Cleveland and they go to the NBA Finals.
Take out Lebron and they are looking to gut the team right now because they are not very good.
Take a whoaful and I mean Whoaful Knicks teams and you add Amare Stoudemire and they are staring at the 4th seed in the playoffs.
Take him out and you will see just how good Raymond Felton and Lanery Fields really are.

I still dont buy the Amare Super Star stuff. Alot of it is just that system.
Anyways, if for once we can get the real starting lineup of Wall-Gil-Al-Dray-McGee then we will look like a totally different team. Look at our record and look at theres. However, look at our roster and look at theres. Id still take ours but theyve been completely healthy since day 1 of training camp.
If we have that group tonight then we win an look alot better

dlts20,
If you think Amare makes no difference in New York and it is just the system:
How good did the Knicks do last year in THEIR SYSTEM without Amare?
THEY SUCKED!
The best systems do not pan out without Superstars on their team.

Phil Jacksons Triangle ONLY works with Superstars on the team.
It will not work with only good players. It needs great players.
I am not an expert on the Triangle but I have heard/read enough about it that the number #1 criteria for success of the triangle is to have Superstar players to run it.

@ draftazoid — as usual you stick on the surface, and use terms like “superstar” without their having any particular meaning.
Yes, Amare is playing pretty well, not quite as well as last season and *nowhere near* the level he played at before his major injury. (If you think there’s no difference, take a look at his ’07-08 numbers vs. this year or last: *much* higher FG%, got to the line more often, more rebounds, fewer turnovers, etc. — one of the top players in the league, which he is no more.)
Also, this statement, “You stick a Superstar on any team and everyone gets alot better”, is completely false. There is no evidence whatsoever that a superstar makes his teammates play better.
But you are right that the players are much more important than the “system.” Every system depends on the quality of players to win games. We would be the same team with the same results if Phil Jackson were our coach.

draftazoid,
first amare is not a low post scorer, he’s a high post scorer. he’s just like dray, except more athletic, and a better shooter.
tom,
i would say amare is definitely playing better than he did last season. ignoring his higher points, higher assists, and higher rebounds (since i feel they are all due to being in a new situation with the same talents) look at his defensive numbers. about a block more and half a steal more per game, that’s much better than his last season. and he’s not having much different numbers than his 04-05 season before his injury either, so i wouldn’t say he was much better back then. (and definitely not one of the leagues best, not even better than kg or duncan at the time)

this will be a tough game, hopefully dray is back, as well as wall. dray is going to have his hands full tonight, wall is going to have his hands full tonight, and the wizards better not play a lick of zone with gallinari out there ready to drop 8+ 3s on any team that gives him a chance.

so what do we feel about nick young getting resigned, or an extension?
preseason i would’ve been the first to say no to this question, and nightmares of contract year blow ups are stuck in my head but he’s definitely convincing me.
if he can keep getting better at the boards and playing defense, i say keep him. i can live with the little assists, he’s not a playmaker he’s a play finisher. but if he could start getting around 5 apg and about a steal per game, he would really be a great player. of course he’s going to have his off nights offensively, but his positive scoring nights have been great this season.

faster, quicker, much more explosive, jumps higher, better finisher at the rim, higher energy player, MUCH better mindset… overall MUCH better player.
jumpshot wise id say theyre about equal or dray’s might be better. dray kind of shoots like KG because he brings the ball up over his head but his shots arc higher than that of amare’s. amare has somewhat of a flat shot.

Been about week since I have posted (Blazers game) since I have posted.
I saw on ESPN and Yahoo sports about Gilbert welcoming the possibility of being traded. If we could make a deal I would trade him when I look at our progress this season and our won/loss record.
If there is a way to get it done I would do it.
I have been on draft machine (ESPN) and have done both a 2 way and 3 way involving the Wiz, Nuggets and Magic. Gil,Melo and VC all make basically the same amount a year ($17 mil.) I have sent Gil to Orlando with VC going to Denver and Melo coming here to take some pressure off of JWall. we would not have a problem selling out the phone booth then and the only thing we would need is a big man in the middle or at PF. In the deal to send VC to Denver, AB would go along with AB. Denver would not have VC on their books next season which means they would have cap space to work with. Getting AB may work out for both parties. if somehow we could get NeNe and Melo would be nice but the figures don’t work for that. I would place Nick Young in the starting backcourt with JWall as the future backcourt. Gil may be the missing piece to make sure Orlando can edge out Miami and Boston for the East title.
Melo and JWall would be an outstanding combination ot have here. I am not sure if I want that combo under EG or FS.
. There are some other factors to weigh in on such a deal but if this could be done I would jump on in a heartbeat. We don’t have to give up our number one pick next year to make this happen either.
I have watched the first 20 or more games and I don’t like the prospects of the way this season could turn out. Except I would love to see Gil leaving and our getting rid of the contract for a more sure baller in MELO.

Sometimes you have shake things up when you been shgaking things up and still are going nowhere. The key is would Melo be willing to come and pair with JWall.
Let’s hope Gil can stay healthy and we can make a move.Would be nice to have both Kevin Love and Melo on our frontline.

Who agrees or disagrees with me. I welcome your opinions. I am being honest in how I feel as a diehard Wiz fan. I just believe we would be a better team with Melo in town. When Melo does not play in Denver they are not that good as a team. We have who we have and we are not good. Why would you not trade Gil’s salary for a Melo if it could be made. Melo would make Chinatown electric and he would be a great mentor to JWall.
It ‘s cold outside so let it rip (your opinion).

draftazoid,
yes amare is a star, and he has his max contract (which doesn’t mean much, so does rashard lewis), but what makes you think he makes players better? who has he made better throughout his career?…
arthritic,
almost everything you listed there, except mindset has to do with athleticism, which i listed when i said why he was better. and i will say he has a better mindset, and i think dray has some maturing to do.
i’m definitely not saying dray is as good as amare, don’t get me wrong, i was saying they both attack offenses the same way, meaning face up post ups from the high post. amare isn’t a low post scorer any more than dray is. he uses his quickness to drive past players, and due to his athleticism, he can do it better than dray. dray has to rely on nifty moves to beat his defender, and he doesn’t have as reliable of a jumpshot.

The difference between Amare and Andray when they face their opponent 1 on 1.
- Andray “tries” to dribble and then goes all the way around for a reverse layup (help defender also has time to come in pushing Andray away from the basket a little bit).
- Amare beats his man so quick with his initial dribble and then attacks the hoop for a thunderous Dunk (no chance for help defender to make it).
That’s the difference when they are about 15 feet from the basket 1 on 1.
That is also worth $10 million dollars in pay difference per year.

You guys are way too stuck on Amare. The system helps him alot. Infact, a month ago NY fans were saying he was the most overrated guy in the league. He was stinking up the joint. He has no moves but a jab step.
Stop comparing Dray to guys when its a totally different system and Dray missed the whole summer with a broken foot. Put a full offseason Dray in Phx with Nash and watch what he does. The fact is that Dray is playing alot better the last 5 games or so incase you havent noticed and that is because he’s finally shaking off the rust and getting his conditioning back.
I still say he’s way more skilled then Amare. Has way more post moves, better handles, longer range, a better J, and so on. He just has to get back right. No matter what, he wont be this year what he couldve been with a full Offseason but he’s starting to come along and will only get better.
Thats why I still say that if we can get our normal lineup out there then we are easily better then NY and will look like a totally different team. As usual for the Wiz though, IDK when that will happened, if ever

I wrote it with the song “A bicycle built for Two” in my head.
Here goes:
(Sung to the tune of “A bicycle built for Two”)
Wizards, Wizards
When is rebuilding done?
Blizzards, Blizzards

The disarray is showing
As the losing keeps on growing
But, as we see
They play no “D”
So the games are no longer fun.

jeff,
that’s true, but with a team of brand new people and a lot of youngins it takes a while to do that for any coach.
i think the players are finding their roles offensively a lot of times, but flip is trying to find a lineup that will play defense as well as score.
if you look at the players who seem to put in the most effort on defense (imo booker, seraphin, hinrich, javale, thornton, nick, and wall) there aren’t that many main go to guys there, other than nick and wall (and wall’s a distributer not a scorer). and while javale, nick, seraphin and booker give effort, they are still learning the game.
let’s hope flip can find a lineup that gives him both offense and defense.

Nice finish to the 1st qtr, I see flip use my favorite line-up Wall, Arenas, Young, Blatche, & Magee. If Flip keeps using that line-up I might just have to take back all the bad things I’ve said about him!!!

McGee goes back up with the Offensive board too much. He has to kick it back out sometimes. Im always so nervous when he does that because he looks so out of control. He only gets away with it at times beause of his length
Comment from gray16
Time December 10, 2010 at 9:35 PM
jeff,
my thoughts on arenas aren’t as high as everyone else’s, lets just say that. he does positive things, he does negative things.
offensively, he’s not doing well this season, and defensively he’s never done well.
basically, you live by arenas, and you die by arenas if he’s your main guy. he’s a good player at times, but imo he’s not as great as we make him out to be.
and i will blame the coach at certain times, and not on others, i haven’t seen anything tonight to put blame on him for, other than not playing booker over thornton, or mabye yi. but yi is doing well tonight, so i can understand that.
Comment from jeffmalone1990

@gray-as a fan, I love your optimism on the coach as far as Arenas (IMO) he is the BEST player on the roster, but we are playing him like he is some glorified 6th man? As a fan I think we would win more games if we just let Arenas be Arenas on the court that is……

The best player without question is Arenas and Blatche after that with Nick/Wall then McGee….as I see it…Arenas can give you 30 if you tell him just to score but he looks lost and uncomfortable trying to do to much, no feel for the game at all. He and Young in the game is quite a back-court with Wall and Kirk off the bench with Blatche, McGee and Booker to start I would love it

Gil has stretches of games. For 3 games he looks like he moves very well and for 3 games he looks like he’s so pedestrian and he always sucks when he’s not moving well. What happened to the guy that just like 5 games ago was attacking the rim and getting to the line like 12 times? Now he never goes to the rim even when its open. He just forces a pass that gets stolen. He has to keep going to the rim or not even go forward at all

McGee plays hard and he is getting better, but he is frequently out of position. McGee is an issue that needs to be solved. I’ve grown on Blatche but he plays so soft inside it is frustrating. The players continue to hang their heads well after thier mistakes. Flip is wishy washy on whom to play and trust. That is the Wizards issues that they need to solve or it will be a long season.

Meaning, the mgmt is stale and needs to go, nad just start fresh. I’m not saying it’s mgmt or the coach, i’m just saying, start over from scratch with a new philososphy from the top down.

javales main mistakes are… and he makes these pretty consistently.
1. he thinks he can steal every ball coming towards the man hes guarding and gets out of position to steal the ball… often times leaving his man wide open.
2. he grabs an offensive rebound (great job). then, even though the shot clock has been reset, he goes back up and forces an ugly shot with his limited offensive capabilities (not good). settle your a** down and pass it out. you are not dwight howard.
3. i know he can reach higher than pretty much everyone in the entire league… but he needs to learn how to get better position for rebounds. with his athleticism and length he should be able to get 15 rebounds every night.
he does try hard every night despite his asthma.
another thing. i dunno what happened to the gilbert we all saw against the magic at home.
he was attacking the basket like a mad man and going to the foul line 10+ times. ever since then he just completely stopped. even if he does penetrate he usually gets stuck and tries to pass it out and ends up turning the ball over.
john wall needs to rest until hes healthy. did not play well today.
yi needs to learn how to finish around the basket. ive already seen him air ball a couple of hook shots this season. i know its not his game to have his back to the basket down low but hes huge and pretty athletic. might as well use your body instead of shooting jumpers all the time.
al thornton needs to learn how to shoot. or just never shoot outside of 15 feet. his shot is pretty ugly.
trevor booker seemed pretty lost out there today.
you guys can agree/disagree with the things i said all you want but i know most of the things i just whined about are true

flip looked like he was going to kill someone
someone (not sure if it was cassell or zierden) was stomping the floor in disgust

What player would you all rather guard Amare?
Andray- He would have scored 60.
Javale held Amare to his average the last 6 games.
We were not stopping Stoudemire no matter who was guarding him. He is just cat quick.
I am sure Glad our Wizards didn’t try to sign Amare.
I don’t think I could have standed him destroying all those front courts this year.
I don’t think I would like us have an 8 game winning streak and flying to the playoffs.

There are precious few suprstars that just fall in your lap on draft day.
What happes if the Knicks get Carmelo? Now they have Carmelo AND Amare. Two Superstars.

We have lots of ammunition to get Carmelo.
We have good players with great contracts (Andray)
We have very, very sought after players (Kirk)
We have a very talented young Center (Javale)
We have another BIG with international appeal (Yi)
We have First Round Picks (Booker and Seraphin)
We have Gilbert- pretty much untradeable-but possible
The key is Javale. If the Wizards are willing to trade Javale then a Carmelo to the Wizards is a possibility.
No way the Wizards trade John Wall. Zero chance.

draftazoid,
you have to make a deal in which the money is right, the contracts have to add up.
the only person we have that we can trade for melo is gil, and like you said, he was untradable this off season.
let’s have patience guys, we are rebuilding. we keep pointing to teams like the thunder, knicks etc. well how long did those teams suck before they got their break?
plus, we aren’t new york, we don’t have the pull that they have to draw players. new york can get players just because of their location.
ted is doing a great job imo in his first season. he’s really changing the culture of the team. he knows that free agency is also a part of rebuilding, but he’s not going to rush things, we need to know where we stand.
so again, let’s be patient.

John wasn’t effective tonight. Kirk is really the only reason we were close.
@draftazoid — I can’t imagine a dumber trade than the one you suggest. And Carmelo isn’t a superstar anyway. He’s an above average player that’s way over-rated. It’s a good thing you aren’t a GM.
To be honest, I’m not sure you know who is and isn’t a good NBA player — weren’t you the one claiming out loud that Randy Foye was terrific; he was really going to improve us? That was you, right?

The Wizards had a very good chance to win the game tonight until:
1. Flip decided to use his 3-guard offense
2. Flip decided to use his match-up zone defense.
The minute that he did these two things (Yes, they were simultaneous because he can’t play man-to-man with three guards), the momentum of the game and the score shifted in the Knicks favor (Wiz went from 10 up to 10 down…some swing). Stoudemire had a picnic just popping into the lane for easy 8-10 footers against that zone, while Gallanari and Fields took easy shots from the wing and the corners.
I realize that the Wizards will not trade the #1 pick, but John Wall is NOT a good point guard at this time. He is a shoot-first tweener who is neither a good point guard, nor a good 2-guard. IMO, time will demonstrate that he was not worth the #1 pick (except, perhaps, for the gate – this year only). John is a bad one-on-one defender who gets beat consistently. He demonstrated his selfishness many times tonight when he went flying (out-of-control) down the court; ignored the obvious pass-off; and had his shot blocked, or simply missed the lay-up. Right now, the Wizards play much better basketball with John on the bench.
My main rub with John is that he has yet to demonstrate that he understands that the timing of a pass that he might make to Slick, or Gil, or ‘Dray is as important as the actual pass itself. John is holding the ball one-dribble too long and then either getting the ball to someone when they are no longer open, or deciding that they are no longer open so he might as well take the shot himself.
Saunders has shown us that he is a bad coach and will not be a success with the Wizards. The Wizards will not be a good team with Saunders as the head coach. Cut him loose and give the job to Sam. Sam will know how to make John Wall into a real point guard and, in the process, perhaps make the Wizards the interesting team to watch that Ted promised us. If EG wants to stick with Saunders, then both will be sent packing before they realize what is happening. This is a business fellows. As other bloggers have pointed out, it looked as though half the crowd tonight was rooting for the Knicks. I’ve lived through those years when most of the fans rooted for the opposition, and I’m not looking forward to doing it again. It’s simply bad business.
Washington, DC fans root for winners. The folks buying high-priced season tickets can afford to do so because they are winners themselves. This town is full of winners. The entire city and Federal administration and the Congress are full of people who are there because they are winners. They will only support winners. Saunders is a loser…

That was a great post by GABBO at 12/11 1:08 AM. Very instructive. Thanks.
I would also like to add that John habitually makes the mistake of leaving his feet when he passes. That leads to turnovers. His tendancy to miss easy shots is also deflating.
I would disagree with GABBO in that, like Flip, I never thought the Wiz would win last night. The Wiz are a team with (what’s the opposite of swagger?) zero confidence. That causes hesitation and gives energy to the other team. The coach is accountable for that.
Worst of all is Gil, who seems like he’s lost the joy of playing basketball. Instead of entering camp with a postive attitude he adopted a surly and petulant attitude. He has no passion out there any more.
It had to be tough for Ted to hear the fans cheering for the Knicks.
Give a lot of credit to Stoudemire. This is a guy who overcame a serious knee injury (he must have had better doctors than Gil) and a serious eye injury. He looks like the MVP so far to me.
One final thought. I would only play Andray in 9 minute stretches. Flip played him too long in one stretch and he was totally gassed the last 4 minutes. I would also consider having Javale share his inhaler with Andray.

i love john wall to death but i have to be impartial when im trying to criticize him
http://www.nbadraft.net/players/john-wall
^—– this link VERY ACCURATELY describes his strengths and weaknesses. i agree with everything it says.
john wall is not a great finisher once the defense gets set in the half court.
he is a blur in transition but he still needs to control his speed better and finish accurately. he sometimes loses control because hes going so fast. he needs to learn from derrick rose on how to finish better using speed. rose rarely, if ever, misses around the basket.
i also think john needs to learn how to change his tempo better. with his speed and athleticism he should blow by anyone defender in this league if he can lull them to sleep first before blowing by them.
obviously he also needs to get a more consistent jump shot. his form is pretty decent.
last but not least i think his ball handling could be a little better. im not saying its bad but itll definitely help him blow by people much more easily.
but im sure hell be able to get better and fix his weaknesses within the next 3-4 years.

Thanks for the shout-out ChenierFan, I’m glad you enjoyed the post.
With regard to Saunders’s resting of ‘Dray: if you’re going to play a guy big minutes, you have to pick the spots to give him some rest. Most knowledgeable coaches understand that taking a player out of the game with about 2 minutes to go in the third quarter and returning him to the game with about 10 minutes to go in the 4th quarter will actually provide the optimal rest because it includes the entire time-out between the 3rd and 4th quarters. The Wizards brain-trust played ‘Dray the entire 3rd quarter and into the 4th quarter and took him out with 10 minutes to go in the 4th and returned him to the game with about 6:30 to go. BRILLIANT!
Those were some serious minutes for a guy just coming back after having to sit out two games with a hip injury.
Barring foul-trouble, ‘Dray should be taken out of the game with about 2 minutes to go in the 1st and 3rd quarters and returned with about 10 minutes to go in the 2nd and 4th quarters. That provides him the best opportunity to rest while getting him about 30-35 minutes of playing time per game.

i agree. but i think its more so his confidence that hes lost rather than passion. he doesnt have that killer instinct he used to have. i dont really remember him making a mistake and getting down on himself before… besides that time he missed 2 free throws in the 2006 playoffs. ive seen him get down on himself everytime he makes a mistake in the 4th quarter.

Saunders did John Wall no favors by making him a captain of the Wizards. John has potential, but he is a boy among men and certainly not a leader of those men. I’m certain that Saunders keeps pounding “you have to be the leader” into John’s head. It’s simply not fair to John or the Wizards team. For John to keep providing quotes that he has to take over; that he has to provide leadership; etc. is evidence that Saunders has succeeded in putting tremendous pressure on this 20 year-old kid.
Just another example of Saunders’s poor coaching. He has no offense; he has no defense; he has no people skills; he has horrible judgement.

If this team wasn’t led by talkers, rather than doers, it would be better off. Gil came to camp feeling like he was written off already. REGARDLESS of what Ted was saying. For some reason he doesn’t feel welcome here. Flip keeps saying dray needs to go on the block, but he plays him heavy minutes while he’s not going on the block. Javale is showing hustle and grit, yet he makes one or two mistakes and he’s taken out. The rooks set the best picks and they get little time. Yi is just as lost as anyone else and he gets off the bench first. No wonder the team is confused, disheartened and lacks motivation. It doesn’t matter who gets the most rebounds, points, shoutouts, etc right now……the team is losing.

What type of message is sent to the team when a player starts a game and the very next game he doesn’t even dress? Seraphin started against the Clippers and Flip made him inactive vs the Knicks?!?!? This is supposed to be a developing team. Developing teams need stability, continuity, direction, leadership, motivation, not whimsical attempts at reward/punishment or innovation for innovation’s sake. The Wizards are getting Jr. high school coaching from Saunders. I realize that Ted said that what we are seeing from the Wizards players is about what he expected at this stage of their development. Even if I were to agree with that assessment, I am very much convinced that what we see now is just what we will continue to see with Saunders at the helm. The progress that Ted is expecting will not happen until he replaces the head coach.

On the Serious Note of Trading Carmelo:
Denver has been said to want a young BIG:
New Jersey comes to mind with Derek Favors but New Jersey has absolutely ZERO to add to the trade.
The Wizards have Javale McGee who is also young exciting BIG with tons of upside just like Favors.
What other teams out there has a young BIG as a trade option?
The wizards have lots of individual assets to add to Javale as part of a package.
1. Kirk Hinrich- Highly, highly sought after. Like I said before, he will be probably the #1 sought after guard on December 15 or the February trade deadline for playoff teams.
2. Nick Young- Coming on like gangbusters- what team cannot use a pure shooter who is starting to show that he can create his own shot (scoring 30 points against Artest/ Kobe)
3. Yi Jianlian- Everyone remembers how great he did at the World Championships. The NBA is not only about winning championships but making lots of money for the
Franchise owners. How many millions of dollrs did Yao Ming make for Houston? Yao is about done and if Yi can take the torch it can be worth millions up millions.
Did you know that 400 million chinese people watched Yao vs Yi?
These 3 players plus Javale works in a trade for Carmelo money wise.
In just about every trade that has involved a Superstar being traded for a bunch of very good players that team that aquired the Superstar has done better in the long run.

You know one thing you look for in any business is ROI (Return on Investment) we will get that in ticket and merchandise sales with Wall, however it takes winning to sustain that not losing. I am not one to continue to bash the Coach, however when Tap and now Flip, it is obvious this team is not responding to him and do not believe in the system. Gil is not playing well because he thinks he will be dealt and this is Walls team. You know how you fix that, you go to Gil and say listen you are a scorer and a pillar of the franchise I will not trade you and we need you to be aggressive in your play at all ends of the court. We will play through you and we will feed off of you, the game will come easier for Wall and Blatche as well. And by the way, naming Wall a captain was a MISTAKE it is something earned, sorry not seeing it, this move would have been better suited for next year maybe not this year, and Kirk as well really? Blake Griffin is not a captain for the Clippers? The team plays a 3 guard line-up (look at the rebound margin when we do), zone defense (how many open shots do we give up a game), stagnant on offense(ball stays at the top and all float to the 3 pt line, and the bigs are at the FT line, no pick n roll or motion) and defense( man to man, trap, 2-3, we stay in a zone and get burned) and always plays at one speed (tempo is always dictated to us and we are more reactive than proactive), and constantly shaking up the rotations (Booker plays well on the road, comes in at 3rd qtr mark, Gee and Martin? Why is Thorton starting) not to mention the active and inactive? For the second year I cannot say what the team identity is on offense or defense (no comment needed) and the Coach still throws players at times under the bus. Their is a conclusion to be drawn here, I will let you decide…….

Wizards officials have applauded Arenas’ work ethic and competitiveness as he adjusts to playing off the ball. “The intensity is there from his part, the motivation is there and it’s going to be a process as we go along,” Washington general manager Ernie Grunfeld said.
Coming off the bench also was a transition. Arenas hadn’t been used primarily as a reserve since he was a rookie with the Golden State Warriors in the 2001-02 season. He knew this much: He couldn’t complain. Not after watching Allen Iverson(notes) resist a bench role with the Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies – a stance that led to Iverson now playing in Turkey because no NBA team wanted to sign him.
“It’s still basketball,” Arenas said. “The rules don’t change for the bench players. I learned a lot from the whole Iverson experience. Not get a job because I can’t adapt to my environment? I’m sure I can adapt to any environment.
“I probably would have had an ego in 2006, 2007, but I’ve been hurt for three or four years now. When I came back [last season] it was Caron’s team, Antawn’s team, and I was adjusting to them. It’s not like I’ve been playing a whole year of basketball where I’m the man. I haven’t been the man since 2006, 2007.”
Arenas also seems to have accepted that the Wizards are now building around Wall. While Wall has been slowed by injuries – he’s missed seven of the Wizards’ 21 games – he has been productive when on the court, averaging 17.4 points, 9.1 assists and 2.4 steals. Wall, in turn, says Arenas has mentored him like a “brother” as the two guards try to improve their chemistry.
“When a young guy is coming in, the older guy never wants to move over,” Arenas said. “But I know my time here is over [as the face of the franchise]. I messed up my legacy here.”
How much longer Arenas plays for the Wizards is the question no one seems to be able to answer. New Wizards owner Ted Leonsis has repeatedly said he’s not interested in trading Arenas, and Arenas’ contract, which has three years and more than $60 million left after this season, will be hard to move anyway. Still, when Arenas is asked if he can envision himself playing out his contract in Washington, he sounds like he’d prefer a change of scenery.
“In this league there is no such thing as long-term anymore,” Arenas said. “Players are getting shipped out and shipped out. I’m looking at the Kings like, when I first came [into the league], none of those players were here. The Lakers team, the only person that was there was Kobe [Bryant], and Derek Fisher(notes) came back.
“There is a young team here [in Washington] and they’re trying to build some chemistry. I guess until they find the right deal that’s going to get me out of here, you know … I’m here.”

This is how u pull off a Melo to DC trade:
Fire Flip and hand the team over to Sam Cassell. These young guy’s wil play hard for Sam.
Sam is the calling card for Melo. They both will bring more fans from Bmore and we will be sold out game in and game out.
It has to be a 3 way trade with the Magic involved. They want the NBA title bad. Gil would flourish in Orlando with a team already established. All he has to do is score.
The Magic send VC and his exp. Contract to Denver and we send our number number one pick and AB for Melo.
Melo makes teams better. He went to Syracuse as a freshman and won the NCCA title.
We keep Nick and Javale around for the rebuild. Nick and JWall will be our starting backcourt. Place KS at the PF to get rebounds and intimidate.

Ted L. Will learn that sometimes u may have to change your philosophy when you learn as u lead. If we are to pack the phone make rebuilding still essential we need someone to lead them. I believe a Melo led Wiz with JWall this team will be dangerous with some tweaks here. Sam maybe able to call on Akeem O. To coach the bigs.

Tom u must do not like Melo to ake the comments that he is not a superstar. N fact u got to be out of mind. On the Olympic gold medal team Melo was one of the top producers on that team.
Man that brother would take so much pressure off JWall. Melo would say give the ball in cruch time. I am a finsher so let me show u how it is done.
Tom, Melo is a class guy who makes players better. Melo gets taller when he goes to the rim whereas AB gets smaller.
dC basketball would never be the same.
in my last post I meant to put TB with KS as the new enforcer. Both need playing time.
Flip cost us the game last night. If a coach can’t win home games that he should and is mserable on the road then he has to go.
So I am lobbying hard for the next Doc Rivers (Sam Cassell) to get his shot. That is who will get Melo to come and stay alongwith Ted L.
Melo is a class act.

I don’t agree with draftazoids players he would trade for. Remember the key is find Gil a new home so he can floursh in a reserve role. The Magic are the perfect. Ask DWade, Paul Pierce and Kobe if the Magic got Gil that would make them lethal. But it also gives our franchise a fresh start.
we r 22 games in and we need to be smart and take that risk. NY did and look at Amare.
Gil would be for Orlando what Jamal Crawford is to ATL, g

I don’t know anyone who would want to play for a coach who tells his team that he doesn’t think that they can win a particular game. The Wizards need someone who motivates without the constant public criticism. Saunders is so out-of-touch with the modern NBA player that he shouldn’t even be allowed to be within twenty feet of any of them, never mind coaching them.

that being said why not lobby for what u believe n. don’t want to keep experiencing what we have already have the last few years.
I am willing to upgrade my seat but only they improve.
I am sick in tired of other players coming here and getting more cheers than our own players.
This kind of play stinks thats why I am getting it out.
I live my life with a winning attitude. Flip has our guy’s acting like a HS team. The NBA is for the serious players.
We should not have lost that game last night. Gil was set for 40 point night at the end of the 1st qtr. Then Flips make him cold by setting him on the bench to long. What kind of coaching is that.

Too many folks, including John Wall himself, drank the kool-aid that was being dispensed by Saunders with regard to John Wall’s basketball ability. John is about two years away from being a good NBA point guard, if he ever gets there. He should put that BS he is getting from Saunders about being the leader of the team behind him and focus on learning how to be a good NBA point guard. He has to lead by example, not with words. The Wizards are totally flat when he is at the point. The team only gets it going when Gil has the ball in his hands. Gil knows how to play in the NBA; John has to learn, and I don’t believe that Saunders is capable of teaching him.
Every team has injuries, so stating that we are just waiting until we get all of our players back to see how we do is wishful thinking.
There are 60 games left in the 2010-2011 season. Every practice and every game that is coached by Saunders is a wasted opportunity for the young Wizards to learn and grow.

If you want to wine and put hints that you want to be traded so your few fans can feel sorry for you then so be it. There still are a few people who feel sorry for you.
Not me. You caused my favorite Wizard to be traded last year and you ruined my season last year.
You are not a superstar anymore.
The NBA doesn’t think so.
The Referee’s definitely do not think so.
How many more end of quarters are you going to ball hog, drive and miss. Then you don’t get the call and you look baffled. PS. The ref’s ain’t giving you squat anymore.

dayle, I think that every team has injuries throughout the year. In the Eastern Conference alone:
Celtics – Jermaine O’Neal 3 weeks, Perkins out indefinitely, West out indefinitely;
Knicks – Azubuike out indefinitely, Curry out indefinitely; Raptors – Reggie Evans out indefinitely;
Bucks – Delfino out indefinitely, Hobson out for season, Redd out indefinitely;
Pistons – Jerebko 5-6 months, Terrico White out indefinitely;
Magic – Daniel Orton out indefinitely;
Hawks – Joe Johnson 4-6 weeks, Pape Sy out indefinitely; Heat – Haslem out indefinitely, Mike Miller 2-3 months; Bobcats – Gerald Henderson out indefinitely
The Wizards have yet to see Josh Howard play a game, but I believe that that could occur next week. We have also had minor injuries to John Wall and Andray Blatche.
I believe that we might have been luckier than most thus far.

JWALL and jeffmalone — there are 48 minutes in a basketball game. Last night, Gilbert Arenas played 39 minutes. As to being able to pick the time when sitting him down is somehow better than another time? — get real will you….
If we replace Flip Saunders, we will be the same team we are now. Then you will all be whining that whoever it is doesn’t know how to coach an NBA team or NBA players or doesn’t use the right substitution patterns or whatever.
That’s been the pattern here — Eddie Jordan was no good; he had to go. Eddie Tapscott was no good; he had to go. Flip Saunders is no good; he has to go.
Here’s a hint — teams in the NBA are as good as their players. Coaches make very little difference, outside of a very few of them.
We have 4 kinds of players right now: 1) guys on the downslope of their careers who can’t do what they used to do, 2) veterans who are either questionable or have never been reliable producers, 3) marginal D-League type players, and 4) raw rookies. That’s what we’ve got.
The only guys on our squad who are *for sure* part of the next 3 years are Wall, Seraphin, Booker, McGee and Dray (because he got extended).
Assuming someone will give us cap relief in return, Gilbert Arenas is gone at the first opportunity — even *he* thinks that is the right move. He’d make a lot better GM than you guys I guess!
At the end of the year, you can mark down Armstrong, Yi, Martin, Thornton, Howard, Gee (probably), Young (maybe) and N’Diaye (probably) as gone. Except for Nick (and maybe Josh Howard) you can mark them as irrelevant *this year* for that matter.
This is a *brand new team* — being built from scratch and just getting started. For fans, it’s a matter of switching attitudes.

First off, he wants to go to NY — why would he leave Denver if he can’t go where he wants?
Secondly, he *certainly* doesn’t want to come to a team that has gutted its roster and is starting over — why?
Finally, he would do such a team (i.e. the Wizards) no particular good, *especially* if you give away our best current player (JaVale) and a top lottery draft pick.
Ridiculous.

@Tom Mandel-I watched every game this year to include last night’s effort. Now to your argument that Arenas played 39 minutes in the game and he missed 9 minutes as a minimal occurrence, let me suggest the following:
Arenas 1st qtr stats 9 pts 3 rebs 3 assists (basketball is a game rooted in momentum and confidence) Arenas had it going early, and Coach decided to sit him for an extended period which nullified his effectiveness (more on this later)
So you asked me to get real, okay I will do just that! You and a few others want to dismiss Arenas as an afterthought or old news and just hand the keys to the car to Wall. Basketball, you must earn the right to have the keys to the car, even if the mass marketing of the team would suggest other than that, players decide it between the lines. Arenas is one of the most talented players in the NBA, and his problems are more mental than physical at this point, so when he has it going at home you RIDE with him and adjust your rotations and philosophies.

@Tom-really if we replace Flip we are no better? I cannot believe even you would write something that no credence. If we change Coaches, we change philosophies and players and coaches can start new and fresh relationships and administer a stamp and identity on how they want a team to perform. So let’s look to the Cowboys/Vikings/in football who made coaching changes. A fresh voice that is respected can go a long way in a locker room, WE HAVE TALENT please do not make this case again. I had no issues with Coach Jordan on offense, it was more on who he trusted to be a defensive coach! As far as Tap, you cannot be serious when he got the interim job? He was keeping the seat warm for Flip period, and the current Coach has a rep for being an offensive coach NOT defensive, the Pistons were already established as that when he got the job!
Tom here’s a hint for you, Coaches make more than a LITTLE difference! Everybody in the NBA has talented players, take a look at 1st year coach Monty Williams or Avery in Jersey? Or I guess Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers have little or no effect at all huh?
I think you are great w\ stats and player efficiencies I really do. But my perspective comes from playing the game and coaching on a smaller scale. So we see the game a tad different.

Flip overrated John Wall’s ability to play defense and his ability to control the game. His game seems to rely too much on steals and fast break points. He will improve if he stays healthy, but he just needs to stay confident to hit that jumper.
Gilbert Arenas needs to be the main point of our offense. I think he is the only player that can get over twenty on a consistent basis. He should not sit back and let Wall go because Wall is the playmaker and he is the scorer. Blatche should be after him, but he should be in the post.

Anyone who says “Coaches make very little difference, outside of a very few of them.” does every coach a disservice and, quite frankly, hasn’t the foggiest idea what a coach does and has, obviously, never coached.
“Last night, Gilbert Arenas played 39 minutes. As to being able to pick the time when sitting him down is somehow better than another time? — get real will you….” – Tom M.
You can’t be serious with that comment. Then again, unless you understand the nuances of the game, I guess you could be serious – wrong, but still serious.
“That’s been the pattern here — Eddie Jordan was no good; he had to go. Eddie Tapscott was no good; he had to go. Flip Saunders is no good; he has to go.” – Tom M.
Correct, now you’re starting to get it. Tapout is automatically excluded from the discussion simply because he was just an excuse for a NBA coach. However, both EJ and Saunders were/are focused on guard-oriented offenses. That is a losing formula in professional basketball. You have to get the forward and center deeply involved in the offense to be successful in the NBA. If you don’t think so, you don’t know what you are watching.
The Getabigboyoffense monicker was to let everyone know just what I was all about. I switched to Gotabigboyoffense after I heard Saunders talking about the type of offense he would run. I switched back after I saw what type of offense Saunders actually runs. However, my displeasure with Flip Saunders is not just because his offensive schemes are innefective (almost non-existent actually), or that his zone defense implementation is as porous as a Jr. high school zone defense. More to the point, I believe that Saunders is way-out-of-touch with the current NBA game. He became out-of-touch in Minnesota; he was out-of-touch in Detroit; and he’s out-of-touch in DC. He was fired in Minnesota; he was fired in Detroit; and he’ll be fired in DC. Until that happens, the development of the Wizards basketball team will be arrested. The Wizards are wasting practice time and game time with Saunders. If the Wizards are to be a competitive NBA team they have to get a different coach.

WE WANT A WINNER, I believe that Josh Howard’s impact on the Wizards will be very positive for several reasons:
Josh was a NBA All-Star in 2007. That’s a very good indication that he knows how to play the game. Last year with the Wizards, he brought a real spark to the team, both on offense and defense, and in leadership.
He will provide depth at the 3-spot. Once he gets rid of the rust, he will be the starting three. Al has suffered after the first few games of the year and Saunders wants to have Slick coming off the bench so Josh will take over at the three.
Josh’s presence gives the Wizards a lot of flexibility. Slick could move to the two giving Gil some rest and not be concerned about having to spell Thornton, or Gil could be at the two with Slick at the three giving Josh some rest.
I have been waiting for Josh to get back into action. I was critical of his politics when we first got him from, but I believe that that criticism might have been misplaced; however, I always saw Josh as a very good b-ball player.
IMO, with the return of a healthy, rust-free Josh Howard, the Wizards best five on the court together would be:
1 – Arenas
2 – Slick
3 – Howard
4 – Blatche
5 – McGee

I realize that many of the bloggers will be critical of the “best five on the court together” that I mentioned above, and will be telling me that we are rebuilding and therefore, have to play the young guys in order to be competitive in the future. I totally disagree.
Teams are successfully rebuilt by providing playing time to potentially good players while fielding the best team possible. Rebuilding from the ground up seldom works simply because you get your butt kicked so often in the process that you don’t learn how to be a winner. The best thing that the Wizards can do to provide the franchise with the opportunity to be successful (other than firing Saunders tonight), is to take the pressure off John Wall and have him come off the bench to give Gil some rest; try to give Booker as many minutes as possible in blow-outs; send Seraphin and Ndiaye to the “D” league in the hope that they might learn how to play the NBA game, and sign big, rough, give-6-fouls-and-take-a-seat journeymen to replace them on the roster. Barring fouls and injuries, Kirk should get about 8 minutes per game providing relieve to Gil and/or Slick; Yi should be used about 8 minutes per games providing relieve to Andray; and Armstrong should be used about 8 minutes per game providing relieve to McGee. Gil should get about 24 minutes at the point and another 8 at the two. John Wall should play about 16-24 minutes per game at the point. Slick should get about 24-32 minutes split between the 2 and the 3.
On the good, well-coached teams, every player totally understand his role. He knows how many minutes he is going to play every game and when he is going to be playing. The Wizards players not only don’t know when they are playing or for how many minutes, they don’t even know if they are starting, or playing, or if they will even be dressing from game to game.
Despite the current record, this is a decent team. The addition of a healthy Josh Howard coupled with the replacement of Saunders with Cassell will make it a good team that would be very interesting to watch.

Of course, the coach could be the difference between losing and winning. The NBA has talented players on every team. Flip should have never appointed a 19 year old rookie as the captain. Wall probably will be great someday but now he is just fast with a huge upside. That was mistake #1- right out of the jump and now I believe he is afraid to correct this. So the GM needs to step in or someone else and correct this without losing Wall!
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In team sports, a captain is a title given to a member of the team. The title is frequently honorary, but in some cases the captain may have significant responsibility for strategy and teamwork while the game is in progress on the field. In either case, it is a position that indicates honor and respect from one’s teammates – recognition as a leader by one’s peers.

When Saunders looks back for the time at which he began to lose the Wizards in 2010, hopefully he will clearly see that it was when he APPOINTED a former Bulls player who would be playing his first game for the Wizards in 2010-2011 and a rookie who had ZERO minutes of experience in the NBA, neither of whom had played a single minute of time in the NBA as a Wizard, to be Wizards co-captains. This should have been the tip-off to both EG and Ted that Saunders was totally out-of-touch, not only with his team, but with reality. What a stupid, Napoleonic decision.

and let’s please, please, stop being delusional about arenas and wall.
you guys keep talking about how wall isn’t this and he isn’t that, and then turn around and talk about how oh so great gil is…
we talk so much about how wall can’t shoot and gil can, yet, gil is shooting a worse percentage. we talk about how wall is a bad scorer and gil is an amazing scorer, yet, gil makes 1 more point on 1 more shot per game than wall. we talk about how wall is not a traditional point and gil is the best at running the offense, yet, wall is averaging 4 more assists than arenas and the same amount of turnovers. people are now all the sudden talking about how wall is a bad defender, but don’t talk about how gil is our worst defender and one of the leagues worst defenders. we talk about how wall has nothing but speed and that’s it… well all arenas has is a track record where he was a great, yet overrated player, and some people see that over where he is actually at today.
so while we continue to get worked up after any loss and talk about how wall is overrated, let’s at least not contradict ourselves and overrate gil in the same post.

Mr. 6-9 shooting floaters plays for them and he was known for being a great leader for us, but he isn’t their captain. We really don’t have a player capable of being a captain. gray16, I was going to retire for the evening and decided to check the blog once more and saw your post. DARN, now I feel that I have to respond. I apologize to any who thought that they were free of me for the evening.
We DO have a captain, in fact we have captains, players who report to center court prior to every game to get the rules straight with the referees. Those players report to center court because Saunders has designated them to be the Wizards captains. Why else would you believe that they should behave that way?
If you actually believe that shooting percentage is the most important factor in being an effective point guard, I would love to coach against your team. Yes, John is currently a bad defender. Does he have the talent to get better, Yes! Is Gil a bad defender, Yes! Are they equally bad defenders, Yes! Who is the better offensive player? Anyone who thinks that the answer is John Wall is to report immediately to the psychiatric intensive care unit.
John has a lot of upside; however, he has an awful lot to learn. Being a point guard in the NBA is not an easy task. Currently, there are MANY NBA point guards better than John Wall. Can John become one of the better point guards? Sure, but not with Saunders as his coach. The current situation is that we have a coach (Saunders) who never progressed, as a player, beyond the CBA, who has determined to impart his extensive (?) knowledge of being a NBA point guard on a rookie.
Is John Wall a premier NBA point guard? No! Does John Wall have the potential to be a very good NBA point guard? Certainly. Will he achieve that with Saunders as his coach? Not a chance.

so because a player reports to halfcourt to meet with the refs, he is the captain? so that’s your definition of a captain?… nevermind then, because they way you were talking about it, you made it seem like it was someone who had an impact on the team, not the refs… and shouldn’t hinrich be the guy talking to the refs, since he’s pretty much our veteran player with a lot of knowledge of the game? so what’s the problem…
i never said shooting percentage is the most important thing for a pg, but it definitely is important if your point guard is taking the most shots on the team. i would love to coach against your team that relies on a guy shooting 20 shots per game shooting below 40 percent, makes my job easier lol.
john is a bad defender? you base this on what? the only player that i can really remember doing great against wall was nash, and he does great against a lot of people. john is just as bad of a defender as gil? are you serious…
and who’s the better offensive player? what do you mean by that, the player playing better on offense this season, or the player who played better offense in 2006?…
because like i said, wall gets 4 more assists while averaging the same amount of turnovers. wall is shooting better. gil is scoring 1 point more, while shooting 1 more shot. so who’s having a better year offensively? john wall.
but i agree, john wall has an awful lot to learn. just like gil has an awful long way to go before being a good player again.
can john wall become better under saunders? i feel so, i don’t see why not. actually, since saunders is his coach, he’s getting to learn under one of the best coaches in the history of the nba, mr sam cassell… lol. but that point stands, without flip, cassell wouldn’t be here. and flip has coached billups, cassell, and marbury, and they all played great under him. so i don’t think he’s holding any pgs back from playing at their best. so if “mr great” sam cassell is teaching him, and flip has never held any good pg back before, what’s the problem…
and what does flip never reaching the nba have to do with anything. do you honestly believe that how good of basketball player you are determines how good of a coach you will be…

The activation of Josh Howard may be the key this season and after for EG and Flip. All the coaches and players on this current are EG GM moves. While he is a good selector of talent he is a poor selector of coaches. The problems for this franchise starts with the GM. Gilbert could very well do what MV is doing for the Eagles. But his hands are tied because of Flip’s love for Hinrich. Don’t get me wrong Kirk is a good player. But this is JWalls team like it or not. Gilbert is a better player than Kirk. Gilbert can help JWall by being on the court with him. Not on the bench in favor of taking big minutes from either player.
If we had to do it all over again we still take JWall.
while he is the new face of the franchise he is not the savior. The savior is a superstar from Denver name Melo. Ted needs to step in and tell EG to give the reigns to Sam Cassell Then ask Melo if he would consider coming to Washington. You guy’s don’t know the devotion of the Baltimore legacy of basketball. That legacy may be what this franchise needs. Better still if u don’t think Sam is the answer the give patrick ewing or mark jackson a shot.
but that may be having to force EG’s hand.

A lot addressed to me. Let me take some of them 1 by 1.
@ getabig — You and I agree about many things, and we disagree about a few things. Above all, I’m glad you stick w/ this blog. Sometimes, when you are frustrated, you threaten to quit.
One place where we agree: we both deplore the marketing-based hype that has been foisted on John Wall. He just turned 20, for crying out loud. That’s little more than a child. He’s played a few dozen meaningful basketball games *since high school!* Did anyone do this to Rajon Rondo? Or even to Chris Paul, who is maybe the best player in the NBA? It’s pointless; it can’t be good for him (tho he is a tough-minded kid, so I don’t think it’ll really hurt him). And it raises expectations irrationally.
We also agree that he is exceptionally talented. But you don’t seem to see that he has actually *shown results* in several games, although he is certainly not consistent.
There have been games this year in which John Wall already looked like a premier NBA point guard. Game 2 vs. the Hawks, game 3 vs. Philly, game 6 vs. Houston, even g.7 vs. Charlotte (but terrible shooting from him that night), the 2d Philly game, and the Lakers game.
His shooting has been streaky, but in most cases shooting is the easiest basketball skill to improve. He has not had the TO problem I feared; it’s a little problem not a big one, I mean. Over the last couple of weeks, on the other hand, he has declined — and I suspect it’s a combination of physical problems and, in a sense, reality clicking in. This is a tough league, and despite the money it’s a tough life.
So his long-term success is a question — of course! But he has already been an impact guy. Can he be *the leader* of this team? That’s ridiculous. Can he display leadership, on the other hand? Yes, he needs to. *Any* player can show leadership, even a rookie.
I don’t think he needs to come off the bench or see his minutes reduced. I think he needs to see his fans become more patient.

@ getabig — you think I’m dinging coaches by saying that they have little effect on team success. What if, instead, I am saying that pretty much all coaches who operate at this rarified level are very qualified (leaving out Ed Tapscott who wasn’t
).
Obviously, coaches are very important in a zillion ways, to the players individually, to the discipline of the squad as a whole, to the world that forms around the team. No question.
But there is very little evidence of players producing more for one coach than another in their career. There has been empirical research on this. Guys move from team to team, and their FG%, their rebounding rate, all their numbers, stay the same. Yes there a few coaches who are exceptions to that rule. Phil Jackson is one. But they are only *slightly* exceptional as it were — guys seem to play a *little* better when he’s their coach.
On the other hand, there is very *strong* evidence that better players have a huge impact on win-loss record; no surprise there. By and large, teams are as good in the games they play as the productivity their players are able to deliver in those games. Somehow that doesn’t seem surprising, does it?
So… no intention to ding coaches. It’s just that the players have the hugely preponderant influence.

JWALL — maybe being at the game *prevents you* from seeing what is happening. Who was put in for Gil against the Knicks? The few minutes he spent on the bench were given either to Hinrich or to Young. Both of them were *much* more productive than Gil.
Kirk played a great game — he was the main reason we were in this game. He produced 7 fewer points than Gil — but he took 12 fewer shots!! He got to the line 6 times in 22 minutes and made all 6 FTs (Gil didn’t get to the line even once), he had zero turnovers (Gil had 4). He played tough defense — I can’t remember one time a guard scored easily on him.
I love Gilbert Arenas, but he is *not* the player he was in ’06-7 and there is no reason to think he will be again. Even *he* says that!
As to Josh Howard being “key” — again, you are looking back to a guy being productive in his mid-20s and before multiple injuries. The past is gone. If you’re going to dream, dream about the future.

@ Jeffmalone — for sure you have a different perspective on the game than mine. You have a right to it — and I have a right to mine.
Gilbert isn’t going to play 48 minutes, man. Really, it’s questionable for him to play as many as he did play vs. the Knicks. So he had to come out.
Moreover, rotations have structure; he came out more or less when he usually comes on nights he starts. And *no one* works with a crystal ball to know if taking a guy out at this second or another will have better or worse effect on what he does a half hour later.
Our problems in the 2d half came from bad shooting, turnovers, and putting the Knicks on the line *repeatedly*. Gil contributed to all three of those problems.

@ jeffmalone — you can’t compare the effect of coaching in the nfl and the nba. They are altogether different kinds of sports.
Yes, a new Wizards coach would bring a new philosophy, etc. Would that turn our players into different players?
You and JWALL both referenced Doc Rivers as a terrific coach. Was he terrific when he won 24 games? Then he got KG and RA and won 66 games: had he become a better coach? Each of the next two years the team’s win total went down: is that because he got worse as a coach? Or maybe it was because KG and RA and PP are all players in their 30s and getting a little worse year by year?
This year he is 19-4 — look at KG’s numbers and Rondo’s numbers: sky-high! What happens when KG declines over this long season? Will the team start to do a little less well? Why, because Doc will lose some coaching skill?
The year before Doc came to the Celtics they won 36 games under Jim O’Brian. Do you know who Walter McCarty is? I didn’t think so. He played 1900 minutes at forward for the Celtics that year.
Then they hired Doc and went 45-37 the next year. Must be because he is a better coach than O’Brian, right? Or maybe acquiring Gary Payton had something to do with it? And Al Jefferson — which meant that big Walter only got 500 minutes).
Doc Rivers *is* a good coach. Give him the ’06-07 Celtics, and he’ll win 24 games. Give him the ’07-08 Celtics, and he’ll win 66 games.
Better players make better teams.

All the talk about field goal % and assists = playing well. Not true at all! A player can go 7 for 10 shooting but missed the 3 shots during the time they needed a basket. Dish out 10 assists only while subs are in the game and turns it over when the featured players are in.
Stats are just what they are but does not tell the entire story. Maybe 55% of it…
Watch the game while Wall bounces the ball at the top of the key or more like towards half court with no purpose except if he can take off to the basket. Young can do that and he does not have the control or flow of the game without pulling up for a shot. If Flip would just bring him in off the bench he will learn to be consistant quicker and learn the NBA game.
Same thing with McGee. He blocks a few shots and frequently is pushed out or just out of position. That is why the Wizards looked so much better when Kevin was in the game because his positioning was so much better. Not that he shot the ball better or block more shots. All we will remember is that incredible block (stat) that McGee had and make the conclusion that he is playing well. Mc Gee plays hard just like Wall but they should not be starting until they are ready. They are not!
They need to take the chains off Arenas and allow him to dictate and not differ.
Start Arenas, Young, Howard, Blatche, and Armstrong.
Give that squad big minutes to see if they will mix. Allowing Wall to heal, watch, and learn.

tyrone, you think sitting on the bench teaches you more than being in the game… if that’s so, kwame brown should’ve been an all star by now.
it’s just like studying in school. you can read all the books you want and have that knowledge, but until you actually do hands on stuff, you aren’t really prepared. what if teachers taught math completely conceptually, and never gave you practice problems? i don’t know about you, but the only way i was able to learn math was by constantly doing practice problems. you can still learn the concepts by your mistakes, your gonna make them whether you are doing a lot of problems or just a little, but you learn quicker by applying your knowledge rather than just beating the stuff into your head imo.
so i think wall deserves big minutes, due to the fact that he needs to learn. if wall needs to watch someone to study them, he can watch tape of people (which he says he does) but until he’s in that same situation with the pressure on him, how is he gonna know how to react?…

when howard returns, i say start:
wall
arenas
howard
blatche
mcgee (mcgee isn’t going to learn on the bench either, he makes mistakes, you can’t learn from mistakes if you don’t play to make them)
howard is one of the best first quarter players in the league, we don’t need young in the starting lineup with him. young would be that spark off the bench at the three.
wall delegated the ball handling to arenas a lot in that first quarter the other night, and arenas did well with it while wall wasn’t doing so good with it, missing two shots and not having an assist. wall will need to learn to adjust to playing off ball in this situation if they are going to continue doing it, then when arenas comes off and wall is on, then he can go back to the primary ball handler.

If Wall had been picked in the 2nd round and played the same way he would not be a starter. When Arenas is playing there is a control at the point that Wall does not have yet. Arenas is not consistently playing well but he can control tempo in a NBA game. Wall and Arenas plays well together but they both are giving up the ball when they both need it to be all that they can. Arenas is much more than coming off screens to score. Wall needs the ball to drive and does not have a quick enough release to be a jump shooter yet.

when arenas is at point, there are times where he’s under control, and then there are times where he keeps turning the ball over. it’s no different than wall.
i understand the favoritism for arenas due to all he did for us back in the day, but at this season, he isn’t playing any better than wall.
we feel arenas can return to where he was at, and we feel wall can get to the level his potential predicts. but both of them need to play to reach those levels, and both of them have shown signs of being able to reach those levels (again). but neither of them has returned/gotten to that level yet, so there is no reason to play arenas over wall at this point.

@ getabig — you could say it differently. The guys who are coaches think coaches are important!
(You might remember, btw, that I *did* say coaches play an important role.)
@ tyrone2000 — after the first dozen games of the season, John Wall was already among the top 10 point guards in the league. Since then, with the exception of the LA game when he was fantastic, he has fallen off — seemingly due to being a bit hobbled but also no doubt the effect of rookie-shock. No, Wall is not being outplayed in any way by Gil.
Also @ tyrone2000 — there is *no such thing* as a shot that counts vs. a shot that doesn’t count. They all count. You miss the first quarter shots, and there are no important shots in the 4th quarter. Duh.
Moreover, an assist to a bench player is the same as an assist to an all-star; it results in 2-3 points for your team. If your team amasses more points — no matter who scores them or when they’re scored — your team wins the game.

Yes he is encountering some growing pains along with being injured. But he will be ok. He is the face of the franchise and not the savior. I am not bothered by everyone’s criticism of im being a captain or whether he should start. My beef and chief complaint is with Flip is his handling of the players he has on this. Some of you over analyze this teams performance. I believe the Wiz have the wrong coach in place. At least he has not showed me anything except being a snappy dresser.
It is obvious this will be a long season. So the only thing that will shut me up is and make me happy is to see the Wiz win the next 3 in a row.

@Tom M. – The old adage “If you want to really understand something, try to teach it” is very appropriate with coaching a sport. To our discussion, the people who have devised basketball offenses and defenses and have lived through the success and failures associated with their choices, know what works and when and why it works. They also understand what doesn’t work and when and why it doesn’t work.
So, while I agree with your comment, “The guys who are coaches think coaches are important!”, I do so because it is a fact, and not the joke you intended it to be.

@ Gotabig — I was ribbing you, yes (hence the smiley face), but I don’t think the idea that coaches are important is “a joke.”
They are important. But they don’t make guys put up better numbers. This is something you can study, and people have studied it. There’s no evidence for it.
Moreover, the fact that teaching basketball (or pretty much any subject) helps you understand it doesn’t mean that your understanding will make guys into better players than they are. Of course if you take someone who is just learning you will surely improve them. I imagine there would be *plenty* of evidence that high school coaches make their players much better.
But we are talking about NBA players. They’ve been coached *heavily*, most of them since they were 12-14.
Doc Rivers hasn’t made Kevin Garnett a better player. Kevin Garnett has made Doc look like he’s a better coach. With one set of players, he won 24 games. With a different set of players, he won 66 games and a title.
As a team, you can only be as good as your players. That’s your limit.

Tom M. – I believe that we might be discussing two different aspects of success for a basketball team. You are stating that personnel is most important and, I believe, you are assuming that I disagree. However, I totally agree. No matter how good the coach, he can not make a silk purse out of a cow’s ear. However, some coaches simply don’t get it.
A coach who is competent enough to make an honest assessment of the talents of his players and is then able to put those players in a position to make best use of those talents will be successful. A coach who tries to make a player’s talents fit his system, despite what the talents might be, will be successful ONLY if the talents and the system are in alignment. Coach Saunders is trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. A three-guard offense with the accompanying match-up zone defense just doesn’t do it in the NBA; throwing young guys under the bus instead of admitting that you might be at fault for not providing the appropriate coaching is a demonstration of lack of respect for your players and is simply an attempt to deflect blame and protect your job. Saunders is not the right coach for this team to achieve the level of success that the Wizards deserve.
Doc Rivers has been successful because he has been smart enough to use both offensive and defensive schemes that are suitable for his player personnel.
Where you and I most disagree regarding the 2010-2011 Wizards is the skills of the personnel. I believe that we have the personnel to be successful, you think that we are a bad team in need of help. My issue is that until we get a coach who knows how to take advantage of each player’s talents, we will lose more than we should; you believe that no matter what the Wizards might do, this year is a waste. If Saunders remains the coach it will appear as though you made the best assessment. If Saunders is replaced by Sam Cassell, I believe that my assessment will be more accurate.

This team doesn’t even display the basic fundamentals of basketball right now. If the only person that knows how to set a pick is your third or fourth player down the line, there’s a problem. If players are not rotating in their defensive assignments, there’s a problem. Whether it’s flip or the players, i don’t think 15 players will be fired, whether it’s flip or not, he’s going to be the one held responsible.
Great dialogue….the key for Doc Rivers is that the players bought into his system and their faith in that system propelled them to a championship and to elite status as a team. The all stars on that team had some of their “career” averages go down for the success of the team, and will gladly defer to the player with the best opportunity if need be.
The celtics openly stated that they didn’t go “all out” during the season, to save energy for the post season, plus KG was still recuperating the whole season from his knee injury.

ronny thompson, regardless of his credentials, made a great observation about the wizards.
When Javale received the flagrant foul, no one even went over to Brand when he fouled Javale (not necessarily to fight, but just to whisper something in his ear).
When armstrong fouled the guy on Miami’s team, Juwan Howard of all people shoved armstrong, yada yada yada. We don’t have a team yet, in the sense of an “NBA” team. Once we get an identity, and bonding (which will probably be a while) but hopefully not plural seasons, I guess we all have to wait it out.
No need in ranting and raving each game, it is what it is. We need more than a coach, a all star, etc.

he has the talent and work ethic to become a great point guard. its his rookie year and hes already had some great games. get off his balls. did you think he would come in and turn us into a championship contender in his rookie season with all of our worthless players?
to me the best lineup is
wall, young, howard, blatche, mcgee
i just think nick’s game complements wall’s game better than does arenas’s. arenas needs to have the ball with him to be effective. whenever wall and arenas play, its as if they take turns hogging the ball and that’s not going to work. arenas should be the 6th man off the bench and hopefully gets traded sometime in the future…

“No matter how good the coach, he can not make a silk purse out of a cow’s ear.”
“A coach who is competent enough to make an honest assessment of the talents of his players and is then able to put those players in a position to make best use of those talents will be successful.”
But if the talents of his team = “a cow’s ear”, and successful = “a silk purse”, then there’s a contradiction here.
The current Wizards squad comprises rookies, cast-offs, veteran minimum players, D League players, guys past their prime and coming off injury, one heady steady vet, one fast-improving Center, and a couple of well-known question marks. Half these guys or more won’t be with us next year!
If by thinking we have enough talent to be successful, you mean that when the ball goes up on any given night we have a chance to win that game — of course! And last year, that was true of the Nets as well. But the other team *also* has the talent to win that game.
Teams with more talent win more games. Avery Johnson won a lot of games when he had the Mavs players. He’s not winning very many with the Nets players, is he?
As to all the nonsense about Doc Rivers did this and Doc Rivers got his players to “buy into” that — let me remind you: the year before the Celtics got KG and Ray Allen, Doc Rivers won 24 games.
