4:29 AM EST….Dave Johnson checking in from LA….and yes ….SportzWiz is out here too…he is the one with the camera..The team did practice at UCLA yesterday…where John Wooden…the “Wizard of Westwood” won so many titles….we could use a little of that Wooden wizardry. The Wizards have not won here since December of 2006 on that memorable night when Gilbert Arenas scored 60 points.A good start would be helpful….like the Wizards had in Phoenix but they can not have the defensive collapse they had in the second half. It has been a season for sparks off the bench for the Wizards. Nick Young continues to play at an extremely high level and Trevor Booker is also making a case for more playing time…..Here’s to a late night together on the BLOG…we have had a lot of fun online with these late night games…..THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from LA as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link at the top of the page. Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 10:30 PM.

Determining a player’s value to a team by projecting his performance over 48 minutes is fallacious. As another blogger (sorry, can’t remember who) pointed out, you can’t assume that a player will perform consistent with a short period of time over a longer period of time. At the extreme, you couldn’t say that a player who is in the game for one minute and hits a three-pointer will then be predicted to score 144 points if he played a full 48 minutes.
The formula that I tried to demonstrate in the previous blog uses actual numbers accumulated over the number of minutes that an individual has really played to determine where a player “ranks” within his team, from first to last, in six categories: total points, total rebounds, assists, field goal average, steals and turnovers. It doesn’t attempt to consider intangibles such as leadership, speed, basketball IQ, intensity, etc. Those intangibles are meaningless unless they lead to production in one of the six categories.
For those who think that the numbers don’t add up, I suggest that you go to the Wizards statistics page and do the math yourself. Get the total minutes that the players have played; get the totals for each of the six categories; divide the numbers in each of the categories by the number of minutes played. The higher the resultant number, the lower the player’s rank. For example Nick Young scores the most points for the number of minutes he plays (219 points in 384 minutes). His score is .5703 which “ranks” him #1 in that category among all Wizard players.
Add the player’s rank in each of the six categories, and divide that total by 6 (# of categories). The lower the result, the better the player’s rank on the team.
If you wanted to take the time to get the information for all of the NBA players, you could rank them all.

the start we had in phoenix from an offensive standpoint was good but i knew we would lose the game because we cant be trading buckets with better teams. we dont have enough offensive weapons to “out score” opponents like we used to a long time ago.
we cant score 100+, 110+ on a nightly basis so we have to get it done on defense… which i highly doubt will be effective against the lakers.
i just hope we dont get embarrassed

Basic basketball Stats when using comparisons between any 2 players:
1. Actual Minutes per game
2. Points per Game
3. Rebounds per Game
4. Assists per Game
5. Shooting Percentage
6. Steals per game
7. Blocks per game
8. Turnovers per game
9. Incorporating team averages or NBA as a whole averages
At the minimum formulas needs to have these 8 basic Stats plus an average from your team or NBA as a whole.
If your formula does not compute all 8 of these into whatever formula you are creating to compare any 2 players then I believe it is a false reading into comparisons.
Comparing guards to Center to Forwards is not an easy task because they have different roles.

gabbo,
i might be misunderstanding your grading system, but i basically presents the same problem that you say per48 presents:
if a player comes in and hits one 3 pointer in one minute, if you divide his total 3 pointers by minutes played you still get 1 3 pointer per minute. this will probably rank number 1 on any team, so it really doesn’t fix that problem that you say per48 has. he’s still getting ranked better for his per minutes production.
and per48 is basically just your per 1 minutes production x 48. so while you are going of per minute production, tom’s method goes off of per48. it’s basically the same thing. tom’s method isn’t to say if a player plays 48 minutes in 1 game, he will hit 48 tre’s, it’s to say if he’s averaging 1 minutes of player per game and 1 3 pointer per game, every 48 minutes of play (which can extend into multiple games) he HAS (not will) hit 48 3 pointers.
so this problem you present in tom’s method still exists in your method. tom’s per48 method isn’t a guess, it’s a fact (it just doesn’t break the stats into games, only minutes)

i wonder who phil will put on john.
i can see him putting kobe on him since kobe has an ability to contain and sometimes stop quick guards, kind of like he did with westbrook last season.
artest may have a night off tonight, since gee isn’t an offensive force.
dray will have his hands full with gasol, who can not only guard him and score well, but rebound very well, we need our bigs to rebound.
kirk might be able to do ok on kobe since kobe relies on craftiness vs speed, kind of like roy did. kobe will probably still get a lot of points, but as long as kirk can make him take a lot of shots to get those points, he is doing his job.
this is the toughest game the wiz have faced all season. not one thing about this game is in the wizards favor, so they have to make something in their favor, starting with the hustle.
we need to run and run more, we can’t beat these guys in the half court. we got enough speed on the court, we need to run until our legs fall off. if we try to go halfcourt vs halfcourt, this will be a blowout.
good news is, last season the suns did well against the lakers with zone, so mabye that won’t look so bad tonight.
good luck to the wiz.

This is not a fact about basketball — it’s equally true about flipping a coin. I.e. it’s a fact about statistics. The larger the data sample, the more reliable the result. In flipping coins, in batting average, in blood pressure, in…. You get my point.
The way you correct for that is by not having confidence in numbers over a short time. Drawing no conclusions from them.
As to going the Wizards page and adding up numbers — there’s no need. All these numbers are added up for every NBA player (for this season and every previous one) at http://www.draftexpress.com.

Here are all the stats for the Wizards this year:
http://www.draftexpress.com/stats.php?tid=Wizards&league=NBA
If you page down to “Usage Statistics” you will see evaluations of the players’ overall productivity using 4 different metrics: PER, EFF EFF/40, and WS/40. Of these, PER and WS/40 are the most accurate — in that they relate best to a team’s overall win/loss record.
In all 4, JaVale is clearly our best player. In all four, Andray is clearly not playing very well.
Both Cartier Martin and (especially) Hilton Armstrong are looking pretty good — but in limited minutes. So one can’t feel very confident in the results.
In all these metrics, for the Wizards and every team, in general guards tend to post lower raw scores than bigs. This is actually consistent with the fact that in general bigs have a larger impact on their team’s success. Not always, of course, but usually.

If you look not at the Wizards but at all players on all teams, and you look at usage statistics, e.g. for power forwards (which seems to get lots of Centers too) — here:
where do you see JaVale — right near the top! He’s playing great ball.
where do you see Dray — near the bottom. He’s not playing well at all.

@Tom (from the Phoenix game day blog)
Tom my point was that you criticized Wall and Arenas (against Portland) for having bad games when you only read the box score and made that assumption. When in actuality they both made key plays to help lead the Wiz to victory (but the box score doesn‘t tell you that!). You even proved my point with some of your own examples before you started your argument that took a ride on Sarah Palin’s bridge to nowhere!!!
You said stats are facts, but are stats really facts? I’ll give some examples of where stats are deceptive and don‘t tell the whole story.
1. In Football if a QB throws a pass to a WR and it hits him right in the hands but the ball gets popped up in the air then gets intercepted, Is it the QB’s fault? NO but he still gets charged with the interception. (It goes on his stats)
2. We’ve all seen this before where a defender is going for a rebound of a missed shot, but accidentally knocks the ball into the other teams basket. Either the player who shot the ball gets credited with the basket or the offensive player who’s closest to contesting for the rebound gets the 2points.(It goes on his stats)
3. Also in basketball if a defender knocks the ball out of an offensive players hands and lets just say the ball rolls over and, a 2nd defender picks-up the ball. The 2nd defender is usually credited with the steal. (yep he gets the stat)
These were just some examples of where you just “reading the stats” would not reflect what really happened!!! ………….. BTW, I guess you should be the person to tell Ron Artest that “timely plays” don’t count. He shot badly most of last year but if it wasn’t for his rebound and put back of Kobe’s air ball in the NBA Finals the Lakers wouldn’t be champions now would they???

My favorite Analysis:
THE EYEBALL TEST
Here are my findings:
1. John Wall is a beast. He is super fast and when he learns how to use his breaks he will be awesome.
2. Javale is a freak of nature. It is hard to not follow him when he is in the game.
3. Although Andray has pretty good stats at the end of the game, for a power forward he shoots 18 footers too much. He is a Wizards Momentum Killer. When the wizards are on a run somehow Andray feels left out so he takes an 18 foot jump shot (which the other team will give him ) and then misses and the other teams come down and score. Momentum gone. He does this all the time.
4. Nick Young is an awesome shooter. Super improved.
5. The Referees do not respect Gilbert. They just don’t. He gets zero from the refs.
6. Hilton Armstrong and Cartier Martin are doing exactly what we pay them to do. Play a few minutes and be active.
7. Booker is a potential beast. Super High basketball IQ.
There are other things but I can’t remember them right now.

Tonight:
Thinking the worst, but hoping for the best. It’s going to be hard for anyone to guard Kobe and Gasol. They usually torch us, and I can’t see why tonight would be any different, looking at how we have played lately. Defensively, we are probably looking at a nightmare defending the triangle. Offensively, we have got to knock down outside shots. Our perimeter game has been off lately (Gil, Wall, Kirk), except for Nick Young. I propose heavely playing Nick and Cartier Martin (the true shooters of the team) in order to have a half-way decent chance of staying in the game.

while it’s tough to see wall struggling at the moment, i think it’s his true rookie indoctrination. we need him to struggle now so he can learn to succeed in the future. john has got away with playing the same way for so long that he hasn’t had to learn how to play differently. but in the nba, these guys are paid to stop you from doing what you want to do, so you have to learn to prevent them from stopping you, and that’s what wall is going to have to learn.
i think right now his spirits are broke as the team isn’t winning (first time he’s experienced losing like this), he’s having a lot of rough nights (not used to that) and he’s not atop of the mountain right now (pretty much a first).
but i’m glad he’s experiencing this early in his career, the quicker he finds this out, the quicker he learns. the coaching staff and himself just need to keep him motivated to better himself and learn how to become unstoppable. wall is an emotional player, you could see against the blazers he was down, but he’s 19 and learning, these things are going to happen.
this is just my personal rant of seeing the positive in the negative for john wall. (biased and hopeful) i will see him in a positive manner as long as it looks like he is fighting out there, and doing his best to be the best he can.

dc, hinrich couldn’t stop richardson, but he could stop roy. roy is better than richardson, but they are too different players.
was richardson hitting spot up threes since the pg or pf was getting into the lane and drawing his defender in with him? if so, can’t really blame hinrich for that, that’s team defense at that point. i didn’t see the game, but from i’ve seen of the suns over the years, richardson’s job is spot up 3s, and his points come off his man having to leave to help out in the paint.
kobe’s not that type of player. he’s a physical player who’s very crafty. he loves to post up and use the triple threat. our best bet against him may be hinrich, although gee could give it a run as well.
but we need a player we can depend on to defend kobe one on one, because if he starts drawing doubles, he can get 10 assists pretty easy with all those smart players knowing where to be and when around him.

I used to call Nick, Nick the kid. I think I am gonna start calling him Nick at Nite for all those people who knows what I’m talking bout.

Right now, using WS40 as your metric and sorting for Centers who play 20+ minutes per game, JaVale is #10 in the league.
The metric does pick out the top guys: ranked above JaVale from 9 – 1 are: Marqus Camby, Tim Duncan, Joakim Noah, Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Tyson Chandler, Al Horford and Kevin Love.
Please realize this is not some metaphysical listing of *bestness*, it’s a measure of what guys are producing in their play this season so far. The season is young, and no doubt many things will change. Right now, I’m just very happy that JaVale McGee has made such *outstanding* strides.
I also should mention that I doubted he’d be doing so well. So, as happens often, I was wrong.
I should point out that I was wrong about Nick as well — he’s a better player than he ever has been. Don’t get me wrong, he is still not a *good* player (and won’t be until he consistently adds some rebounds and assists and gets himself to the line more often), but w/o a doubt he’s a heckuva lot better than he was.

Is Gil starting tonight? I saw this from a reliable Wiz fan on another board. He wrote this to Leonsis. Ted always responds back to him and this is what was said:
Sent Leonsis this email yesterday:
————–
Mr. Leonsis,
Hopefully this doesn’t fall into your folder of “overreacting” fan emails. I sincerely appreciate all the hard work you’ve put into interfacing with your customers over the offseason and giving us all hope. However I’d like to point out some of the predictions/goals you’ve made off the court concerning the direction of the Wizards have not been implemented.
For instance, here is an article from July.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcspor … e_one.html
You stated how we’d have one of the league’s most dynamic backcourts, and have a team that “puts up a lot of points” and “just runs the floor”. Also stated you planned to feature Wall alongside Arenas for this very purpose and with the rest of the youth. You stated that was the “system the WIzards will build around.”
However, in fact we’re playing quite slow most nights, and featuring players who have the skillsets which go directly against your preseason wishes. We aren’t scoring, or running. Hinrich (capable, but offensively/speed challenged) has in fact played 100% more minutes next to Wall this year. Arenas has played around 120 minutes next to Wall, Hinrich 240 (give or take 3-4 minutes). Seems to contradict your wishes/hopes for the squad this season. If your goal was to run/play the youth thus far it’s not happening. Guys like Hilton Armstrong and Hinrich are playing 8/12 minutes in crucial stretches while your dynamic/speed/scoring players such as Arenas/McGee/Young ride the bench.
Thanks much for your time, and I’m confident your message in the offseason still rings true and the ship will soon be righted. We all realize this is not a championship year, but it disappoints me to see your vision for the team not being implemented by your staff.

then he goes too far and the rug is pulled out from

this really bad guy. Seems to me he’s doing his best to

hinrich containing roy that night was definitely due to his defensive abilities. hinrich may not be able to stop a quick guard, but he can stop crafty slower guys, or power guys. he’s a physical one on one defender, so if you try to beat him with physical or crafty moves instead of being quicker than him, he’s probably going to be able to contain you.

This is more of the blah blah blah stuff we have to put up with. Ala saying Hinrich “is not an athlete” when he tested much faster than Nick Young at the NBA combine and almost as fast as Wall.
Is Hinrich as good — in any way — as he used to be? Certainly not. But he’s 29 not 35, and he is one of our better players. Probably he wouldn’t be one of the better players on a good team, but he is on ours.

but whether my opinion on that is right or not, ask anyone at that game if roy was being defended well by hinrich and they will agree. ask anyone that was there if roy was forced into making some very tough shots and they will agree.

Hinrich is a very good below the waist defensive player but once a player gets the ball up over his face he has little jumping ability to block a shot. Easier to shoot over him but still a very good defender. IMO

i’m not saying i’m against coach brown coming here, especially now that we are rebuilding, but if he had came here last season instead of flip, i doubt the results would’ve been any different. remember what happened in new york, if the players don’t buy into brown’s system (which he does not adapt for players either), the system is going to look horrible. if the players do buy into the system, it has success.
then we would have to worry about brown pulling a detroit on us and bringing up a bunch of off court drama about where he wants to go next.
but it doesn’t really matter, i doubt he’s leaving the state he wants to be in (North Carolina).

Flip is an idiot. Yi has been horrible, yet he’s playing more then anyone. He looks so slow & inept on defense and going for boards. Keep Booker in the game. Then the other thing goes back to what I keep saying. We are so much better without Kirk. He’s solid but we have too many guys. We would be so much better with a 3 guard rotation of NY, Gil, & Wall. What will we do when Howard comes back and we have Thorton? Gil is playing well and then has to sit because of Kirk. Then Wall goes off and has to sit because of Kirk. Its stupid. Its one guy too many.
Then it also keeps us small all the time. Without him we would have NY in at the 2 alot and be normal sized alot. I just dont like it. I hated the trade because of that. We always have to worry about playing Kirk and it will be even worst now that we are getting healthy and then Josh comes back. People will get shorted because Kirk has to get his minutes when he really fits the least out of all the guys. I said before the year that I hope there isnt politics and that if NY is better then Kirk then he should get the minutes. Sure enough its coming to that and I dont think Wall, Gil, or NY should get there time cut. It should be Kirk.

kirk and booker’s +/- are so good because that’s when we had our energy, defensive minded and fast break unit in
it was
wall
hinrich
young
booker
mcgee
that lineup was making the zone look good, forcing a lot of ball movement and turnovers by the lakers. then those turnovers were turned into fast break points. that energy just took over.
booker got taken out so his +/- is still the best, but kirk stayed in when gil and yi returned so his +/- took a hit.

what makes this game tough to swallow is that we can play like we have tonight (for 2 qtr) and hang with the best teams in the league, but then I go back and look at that thrashing from Toronto, and … I dont know..who is this team?? I think tonight with Dre missing, the only thing lost was good ball control underneath… Booker has been amazing… can Flip find the right combination of guys to start??

good game, tough loss, but a lot of positives
need more minutes for booker in some future games, he’s definitely got the talent, he just has to learn how to use it
Comment from Arthritic
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:10 AM
great game. the team really hung in there and fought hard
@jeffmalone javale mcgee played horribly today.
Comment from gray16
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:12 AM
i don’t think javale played horribly at all, his defense at the rim was key when he was in there. he just had foul trouble.
but early in the game he was forcing the laker’s best player to pass instead of shoot and was shooting bad.
javale was also getting good rebounds and was shooting well as usual.
Comment from WE WANT A WINNER
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:13 AM
Tough loss, but if we play this well against the Kings, we should leave this road trip with a victory.
Comment from dlts20
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:13 AM
It Was An L But I Like What I Saw
I think this game put to rest all the dumb stuff about Wall & Gil cant play together. They had no problem tonight and will only get better. This was against the best team in the leauge & the biggest team. There length gave us trouble. We will be alright against other teams. We may have stole it if we had Dray instead of Yi who was dreadful. He was so bad that I could see Booker stealing his backup minutes. I really love Seraphin and he should be great in 2 years but he has the worst hands in the league. Bobbles everything.
Basically, I think we will start to look like a different team now. Wall & Gil will only get better together. You could easily see that neither guy hurt the other’s game and helped it to some degree while NY is a straight beast off the bench. I think we get our 1st road win tomorrow and our first win streak in the next game against NY. I just think that we will start clicking since Flip has finally woke up and see who he has to play
Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:16 AM
Classic game of a less than talented team trying to get up for the Champs, let’s see if this effort sustains itself against the Kings?
Comment from gray16
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:16 AM
i was watching the lakers telecast and whenever the lakers were scoring all they would talk about is how the zone is a horrible defense.
but they didn’t have much to say about it when it was stopping the lakers. and it was doing that tonight.
like i said before the game, the suns zone gave the lakers trouble as well in last years playoffs, so for the wizards zone to give them problems (when high energy players were in) wasn’t that shocking to me. the lakers just aren’t that good against it.
the problem tonight was the first half rebounding. 22 offensive boards is horrible, and it allowed the lakers to shoot 44% (good defense) and still get 115 (bad rebounding).
Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:19 AM
@gray16-I did as well, watched the game on the Lakers feed, and they really pointed out how weak the ZONE was…Again that is a coaching philosophy BUT I digress
Comment from Arthritic
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:21 AM
no javale let gasol do w/e he wanted to. on several occasions javale was completely lost. on one play when derek fisher drove to the basket, javale didnt even bother to turn around and was basically setting a moving pick for fisher.
flip took him out because he made a lot of mistakes today not just because of foul trouble. i think seraphin and booker did a much better job on defense
Comment from dlts20
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:30 AM
McGee was bead & Yi was dreadful. Atleast McGee sat at times though. Flip left Yi in way too much
Comment from gray16
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:35 AM
i missed about the first 6 minutes of the game and that’s when the lakers got off to a good start. that may have been when javale’s biggest mistakes were taking place, but i felt he did good other than that.
and i’m pretty sure gasol did not want to shoot 4-14 in the first half, so he wasn’t doing anything he wanted.
Comment from Arthritic
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:41 AM
yea yi had no clue what he was doing on defense
Comment from dlts20
Time December 8, 2010 at 2:42 AM
McGee was ok man to man but he got lost so many times on help defense. Then both him, Yi, and HA were letting LA push them out the way for boards. Booker & Seraphin were great. Seraphin just has to get rid of those Kwame Brown hands of his
Comment from maggicman11
Time December 8, 2010 at 3:22 AM
well i hope Flip saw why Nick needs to start. Nick has been consistent all year. if he cant break the starting lineup now, he never will. booker and seraphin have increased their playing time going forward with their play tonight.
Kirk should have a limited role. he is not a starter. he is not a 30 min player. more like a 15-20 minute player. we have Wall and Gil for the point. Kirk should just fill in.
I wanted to see Gee. but we did alright without him.
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time December 8, 2010 at 3:55 AM
I sure wish I could have seen that one. To lose to the Lakers by only 7 on their court is pretty amazing. I’m box scoring again lol…. It looks like Nicky is turing into a real player. Adding a lot of different stat catagories this year. Wall had 14 assists? Really? I really like our future as long as he stays healthy.
I love how Booker seems to be getting his land legs
After all he was able to accomplish at Clemson it was only a matter of time before he blossums.
Ok Seraphin needs/earned a few exta minutes. Everyone talks about Booker being a beast. Bruise brothers part two… Booker/Seraphin. Our future… factoring in Mr. Wall and Mr. Blatche looks pretty ok
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time December 8, 2010 at 4:01 AM
almost forgot. Thank you SportsWiz. The Josh snippet was a very encouraging post. Maybe he is back in limited minutes next week? Wow. The entire team dymanic will change. Hopefully for the “defensive” good of the team
Comment from Arthritic
Time December 8, 2010 at 12:38 PM
i was pretty impressed with booker but i think the reason why he was able to score a lot was because the lakers probably didnt even have a scouting report on him and had no clue who he was
i think he really needs to develop is right hand because hes so predictable. he cant dribble with his right hand nor finish with it.
hes a freak athlete and strong as an ox. he definitely has what it takes. i think he needs to develop is offensive game a little bit more

i DEFINITELY enjoyed watching hinrich get fewer minutes as well as gee barely getting to play
if our team had a better record, nick young would be the top candidate for 6th man
i think once josh comes back id like to see
wall, arenas, howard, blatche, mcgee
with young, booker, seraphin, hinrich, yi and thornton getting the rest of the minutes

Go Wizards!
Looking for 35 minutes from Nick and 25 minutes from Trevor.
My hopeful starting lineup:
Why? Because they deserve it!
PG= John Wall
SG= Nick Young
SF= Trevor Booker
PF= Andray Blatche
C= Javale McGee
PLAY THE BEST! PLAY TO WIN! ALL THE TIME!
