Game Day Phoenix
8:31 AM EST (yes 6:31 here in Arizona)…Dave Johnson checking in from Phoenix where we had a practice yesterday. Right after the win over Portlandwe jetted here to get settled for this rather quick west coast trip with three games in four days. Really enjoyed the will of the Wizards to stay in the game Friday when things were not going well on offense in the first half. We stayed in that game with rebounding in the first half and then forced the tempo in the third quarter. Andray Blatche may have had his most complete game of the season. Speaking of tempo… that wll be issue tonight. The Suns like to score early and often . Don’t expect them to go late in the shot clock and they are fourth in the league in three point field goals attempted. The Suns are better than there 10-9 record….Hope you can join us tonight…nothing like basketball after a full day of football…THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from Phoenix as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link at the top of the page. Also if you have an iphone or ipad you can listen through an App called tunein radio. We start at 8:00 PM.
7:25 EST…Dave and Glenn checking in from US Airways Center in Phoenix…..good chance Nick Young will be able to play tonight.
7″30 PM EST…starters are in….It will be John Wall, Kirk Hinrich. JaVale McGee, Alonzo Gee, Andray Blatche…Suns will have Steve Nash and Jason Richardson at guards..Earl Barron, Channing Frye, and Grant Hill in the front court.

I glanced over the gameday blog for the blazers game and saw that you heard about a trade offer for arenas… involving blake griffin and tyreke???
i highly doubt that’s true for blake griffin… tyreke is more believable
tyreke fixed his shot a little but it’s still not that good and he’s been playing worse than he did his rookie season.
so, i would definitely NOT want him for arenas unless we get demarcus cousins with him
… and… uh blake griffin…
ill take blake over arenas anyday ANYDAY
WOW

arthritic, he was making that up to say that if we did get offered those guys, would ted still say arenas is untradeable, and if he did, he would be dumb for it.
i wouldn’t want tyreke either tbh. he’s one of my favorite players in the league, but he can’t play beside wall anymore than arenas can, actually less. tyreke really needs the ball to have any impact, he couldn’t play along side a pg like wall, he’d need a pg who plays off ball like udrih does to play beside.

Will the real Washington Wizards team please stand up!
We can’t out score this team so what other alternative do we have but play defense and hope for the best. This Phoenix team is loaded with offensive weapons but we can counter with defense if we make the right adjustments. The reserves I will look to make some noise is Arenas, Armstrong,Thorton,
and Yi and our three point specialist Cartier Martin! Booker should be ready to provide instant defense and offense! also!
Lastly remember “Theres No Place Like Home” !

I still say start them both without Kirk and we win this game without a doubt while both of them play well but thats not going to happen so Im not going to keep talking about it. Some say it was because NY was out. Really? So Jr Smith misses a game and Denver thinks “lets bring our best scorer in Melo off the bench to makeup for his production”. Its a joke.
Gil out West, where he dropped 54, against a team he’s had alot of good games against, and playing against his boy in Richardson had big game written all over it. Add that to Wall knocking off the rust and I think they wouldve lit it up this game. Now its just wait & see

Gilbert scored 54 points against Phoenix on December 23, 2006.
If we can get Gilbert from 4 years ago then we’ll be in good shape. (of course minus the 3 major knee surgeries and the inactivity from last year).
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 5, 2010 at 1:35 PM
In a lot of people’s minds, that is who Gilbert is. For these fans, as long as the name stays the same, the player is the same. Time doesn’t go by. 4 years is nothing in an NBA athlete’s career. 3 knee surgeries, etc. have no bearing on performance.
Not only that but shooting 38% doesn’t mean you are hurting your team. Etc. etc. etc.
Nothing you can do about it.
Comment from draftazoid
Time December 5, 2010 at 1:44 PM
Not only has 4 years gone by but because of what he did last year, and he not being significant since 2006-2007, the Referee’s pretty much go out of their way to ‘NOT GIVE HIM ANY RESPECT” when it comes to getting fouls or giving fouls.
They could care less about what type of player he used to be. We can all complain that Gilbert did not foul or was fouled during the game but the Referees could care less about Gilbert.
They do not even explain to him anymore about what had traspired that involved him when he fouls or gets fouled.
That is what I see during the game involving Gilbert and the Referees.

It all falls back on the coach to make them accountable for there lack of defensive effort. If you are not stopping your man because he is just better than ask for help but you must also help out when your names called also! Its a give and take situation and everyone must pull the tight rope together in order for it to work. You know everyone going to need help on Nash and Frye so lets get busy and help the other man out!

In the last thread, Mr. Know It All wrote:
“@ Tom, …Haven’t you learned that stats don’t tell the whole story. A player could shoot 1-20, but if that 1 shot’s the game winner he’s the hero!!! It’s all about making timely plays”
I read pointless comments like this all the time. Shooting “1-20″ isn’t a “stat” — it’s a *fact.* It actually happened, on the court not on the box score. 19 actual shots went clank.
Yes, *of course* anyone who makes a game-winning shot is “the hero.” And it could be a free throw not a shot; for that matter it could be an offensive rebound. Could be pretty much anything.
But if you shot 1-20, then if you’d made a couple of the shots you took earlier in the 4th quarter, the game wouldn’t be on the line at the end! I guess you wouldn’t be “the hero” but you would have done more to win the game for your team.
And that’s because it’s *not true* that “It’s all about making timely plays.” It’s all about *every play you make.* Every single one of them counts towards the result. Duh.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 5, 2010 at 7:30 PM
Oh by the way, how about you shoot 1-20, and your team is down by 7 with 10 seconds to go. What kind of “timely play” is it “all about” then?
Isn’t it more likely that if you play bad you help put your team where it *can’t get a win* then that you put *yourself* where you can make a timely play? Huh? What do you think?
Comment from dcbutler357
Time December 5, 2010 at 7:32 PM
Aundra that is so true, thats why you keep hearing glen say “rotations”
We Want a winner, that reminds me of the saying, if the grass is greener on the other side, why not start watering our own grass…..what players does flip need in order to have a successful system. Dantoni was allowed to get players that fit his system correct? Is Flip afforded the opportunity to get players to fit his system or is he just given players and told to go coach (that’s an interesting viewpoint). He was given that situation in Detroit and here (originally) what exactly is flip’s system?
Tom, is it necessary to be condescending (with the duh at the end…lol…)

The Last 2 Franchises Flip Saunders coached both made it the Conference Finals.
1. He Took a rebuilding Minnesota Timberwolves Rebuilding team and eventual were perenial playoff qualifiers and eventually made it to the conference finals. Kevin McHale wanted to be a coach so he fired Flip and hired himself. What a toad!
2. Flip took a nice Detroit Pistons squad and had success with them and in his 3rd season reached the Easter Conference Finals. They lost so Joe Dumars fired him. Where are the pistons now Joe?
Comment from dcbutler357
Time December 5, 2010 at 7:51 PM
zoid,
the pistons won the championship the year before he took over, so the team was already assembled. It’s okay to take up for someone, but conversations get tiring when we don’t look at the whole picture (consistently). this isn’t a new conversation, but you stay on the same beaten path…..lol…
Comment from gray16
Time December 5, 2010 at 8:08 PM
dc, the piston’s didn’t win the championship the year before, they won it two season before that, and had been beaten by the spurs in the season before that. but yes the team was already assembled, but put a bad coach there and they would’ve not done well (exactly what happened with michael curry). instead they did great, they just didn’t have the playoff success as previous seasons.
as for the game winning shot thing:
if a player misses a last second shot that would’ve won the game, it is a fact that if he had made it, his team would’ve won. if a players would’ve made 5 more shots than he did for the night, it isn’t a fact his team would’ve won. from there anything could happen, but when the buzzer rings, and a player made that last shot, there is nothing that can be changed from there.
by saying if a player made 5 extra shots his team wouldn’t have needed that last second shot, you are assuming that everything after that would’ve happened the exact same way. but that isn’t true, it’s just a guess.
at the same time, while a person shooting 1-20 and making the last second shot did make the biggest play of the night, he still had a bad shooting performance, and didn’t help his team as much as the guy who shot 50+%.

We need to institute some penalties for bad plays:
AB – for every shot taken and missed from beyond the foul line minus total shots made = 10 laps;
Gil – for every turnover minus total shots made = 10 laps
Wall – for every shot taken minus assists = 10 laps
JaVale – for every shot take beyond 10 feet minus total shots made = 10 laps
We’ve got to establish some GOOD habits on the court.

he started that weak starting lineup in the third quarter and that was it. Other teams make adjustments, we make same mistakes.
This coach doesn’t know how to use his assets. He should know which players to play vs certain teams. His 7-15 team is not good enough to continue using the lineup that has yielded a losing record (regardless if we have injuries). You never never never start heinrich at the two, he’s not a two and you have quality twos on the bench…..totally unacceptable, but to come out of the half with the same starting five, AFTER your bench players are teh players that kept you in the game in the 1st half….what game was he watching.

didn’t see the game, so bash me all you want for what i’m about to say if you want:
but 125 points given up and 108 points scored. based off of that, i would say offense wasn’t a problem but defense was.
so if hinrich should be replaced, he should be replaced with someone who can play defense well. that puts gil out. but if nick can play better defense than hinrich, well at least good defense and continue to score, i say start him.
of course, we don’t know how well this will work out, since nick might be comfortable with his role right now, and might not perform as well starting. but its worth a try.

and as for hinrich, something in the back of my head tells me he is auditioning right now. i think we might be giving him minutes to boost his stats so he can be used for a trade later in the season. i think he’s our biggest trade pawn at the trade deadline, so that might be why he’s getting so many minutes.
of course, he only played 20 minutes tonight, so flip did limit his minutes since he wasn’t doing much.

it’s not only the defense, he HAS NO OFFENSIVE VALUE AT THE TWO. he’s a point guard, nothing else. And if you call what he did tonight defense, I would like to play your team for the championship every year. He can play in your face all he wants, but as soon as he’s in someone’s face, he’s back pedaling because he is getting thrown to the side somewhere…..what the heck made anyone say that he plays good d in the first place? over the last three years he’s avg 1 steal a game, he’s a minus 20 for the game and the highest on the team. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop asking questions if you are only looking at one or two numbers, there’s other numbers in stats to use also.

The deal is that each of the Wizards players is a competent NBA player. The issue is how and when their individual talents are used and with what other combination of talents. IMO, the Wizards should have won, at least, five of the games they lost. Those loses rest solidly on the shoulders of coach Saunders. He, of course, will acknowledge NO personal fault for the losses, but will find individual or multiple players who he will willingly throw under the bus and then back up over them. Do any of the bloggers really wish that they had ever played for a coach like Flip Saunders?

if i were another team, i wouldn’t even want him, he looks awful to me…unless he’s strictly point guard and that’s it (limits there also)

i’m sure if a team saw that blazers game they would’ve remembered why hinrich is considered a good defender, and i’m sure if they saw tonights game (even though i didn’t), they wouldn’t have short term memory loss.
there are going to be some playoff bound teams that wouldn’t mind picking up a good defensive pg for the bench who has an expiring contract, i’m willing to be money on it.

Look, if you guys are going to argue against Gil starting all the time then fine but this isnt just about Gil anymore. It also hurts our new Franchise player in Wall. He’s a pure PG who can score but he needs scorers around him. He looks lost starting out there with no big time scorer to pass it to. Its the dumbest lineup ever. Again, if not Gil then you start NY. That gives us the size at the 2 and a scorer for Wall. Defense isnt the whole story. You cant start 5 great defenders who only average 2ppg. You still need to score the ball. If you dont want Gil then start NY and bring Kirk off the bench with Gil. I think it makes way more sense to start Gil but if not then you atleast have to start NY. The Wall-Kirk backcourt with guys on the floor like McGee & Gee is the dumbest lineup ever.
The other 1 good thing about Gil is that he’s the only guy on our team who feeds the post. Dray never gets it in the post unless Gil is in. The same for everyone else. Flip is dumb about that also. Give Dray some post touches, espically now when he’s getting healthier. Not only that but give him post touches on his strong side where he can turn over his left shoulder. We always give him post touches on his weak side where he basically can only shoot a fadeaway over his right shoulder. It takes away alot of his options. Flip is just dumb and outhinking himself

From the box scores it looks like Andray had an exceptional shooting night… Yi had 9 boards… and Wall had 12 assists. Nicky looked to have a pretty good all around game. Good shooting, had a couple rebounds, an assist, and a block.
I couldn’t watch the game tonight so I thought I would read the blog from the time the game started till it ended. I’m not doing “That” again LOL. I haven’t seen that much negativativity in a very long time. I don’t think one person save DJ had one positive thing to say. At halftime in the football game I was able to watch some of the 4th quarter. Tuned in JUST in time to see Booker put back Wall’s miss with a thunderous one handed Flush. And another one off an Arenas feed.
Arenas only got credit for one steal? But I saw him knock the ball loose numerous times. He seemed to be playing inspired D the short time I was able to watch.
We have to take individual accomplishments right now. We are “not” a better team than Phoenix or a lot of teams this year. We are very similar to the “try out” team the second half of last season. It’s fun to see who is going to impress and who won’t.

Grif, I gave props, and I criticized. JWall had 10 assists at half. Yi’s shot selection was
arthritic, total blame isn’t on the coach, just his suspect rotations. He took AB out because of his “tenacity”, i think (wasn’t up to par). Glen mentioned it. the starting lineup isn’t giving us much of a chance, and the subs are fighting uphill. The subs ignited us in the first half and couldn’t overcome the deficit in the second half.

My expectations are quite simple; the team needs to forge an identity that we are energetic; have young legs– we are tough to play against–and we have upside. And that we play tough and that we play together. We are tight–we are well coached.
We didn’t show any thing like that last night– and to not have one road win yet this season is unacceptable.

okay, last quotes from Ted’s Take:
We need. We want. You must get.
I get it.
I was reading some clips about the Miami Heat in the NBA the other night.
They had the greatest free agent signings ever in the off season. The most hype. The most off season excitement.
One media analyst said this week ..” now they need to add a big man; a point guard and one more scorer off the bench; they need some more size at forward too “. Is that all? Who doesn’t?
Every team needs something; some where.
I agree.
But when we focus on what we need– sometimes we disrespect what we have.

It is time for Trevor Booker to start at the 3!
First round draft pick that has proven himself on the court for the 6 plus minutes he plays most games.
He is a player who needs to play.
The investment in John Wall is to have him start from the first game.
Now that Trevor has proven that he can play at a high level in this league the Wizards need to make that leap and start him also.

Why I like Mike D’Antoni:
1. He sat a very selfish and ” I could care less” player in Stephen Marbury even though he was making $20 million a year.
2. Eddie Curry said he is ready to play now. (Now that the Knicks are winning and, lo and behold, Eddie becomes a free agent at the end of the year. Surprise-Surprise). D’Antoni said “naw”- your not ready.
I love it when a players big money contract is not the deciding factor for who plays and who does not play. Settle it on the court.
PLAY THE BEST! PLAY TO WIN! ALL THE TIME!

So I watched the game, and the same thing took place….The Wizards continue to launch jumpers, stay in a zone defense, and play the occasional 3 guard rotation. Kirk again was non effective and Wall had 10 assists in the 1st half and 1 TO in the 1st half, however Nash really took it to him for the game.
*Arenas needs to be the focal point in the offense* he is playing tentative still, almost as if he is not sure when to pass or shoot. Also McGee should be rewarded with some inside/out action with his hustle play, he and Blatche for that matter. As long as we are a jump shooting team that cannot get to the FT line we will be a very bad team. This is a philosophy decision not TALENT.
Bright spots:
Young
Gee
Booker
Blatche

i’d like to see a starting lineup of:
wall
young
gee
blatche
mcgee
next game.
wall will need to get his shot straight, but having young on the floor with him will take a lot of pressure off of him. and they seem to play well together imo.
young will provide scoring in the starting lineup. this should help the team get off to better starts if he can keep that stroke flowing. plus wall should be able to find him for good shots.
gee is an offensive liability, but with another scorer (young) on the floor, i don’t think it will look as bad. plus, we need rebounding in the starting lineup, and gee is our best rebounder at the 3.
blatche is on or off, but i feel we shouldn’t depend on him for offense in the starting lineup. he does get off to some hot starts, but with another shooter on the floor, that should help the team whenever blatche is doubled or doesn’t have a good shot.
mcgee is mcgee, get those boards and blocks.

It’s amazing how people outside of our home can dissect our players better than those that should be dissecting our players and playing them the proper way.

@ Gotabig — win this one for me!! I’m in Chicago until tomorrow with no way to watch (and no time to watch even if there were a way — visiting kids/grandkids).
Very interesting discussion in the previous thread. Some of you imagine that our coach is so bad that if he had Dwayne Wade, LBJ and Bosh on his squad together he’d only be 13-8
