Game Day Miami
6:01 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in from Miami…land of the $5.16 cup of coffee…but with free refills…I am still working on the free part when the cup starts at over $5. Anyway it is the Wizards and Heat tonight. The team actually flew here right after Saturday’s 100-99 loss to the Magic. It was a chance to get settled and hold a practice at American Airlines Arena. Flip Saunders reminded the team that they can build on Saturday’s game even though it was a loss. The Wizards won the battle of the boards and it was rebounding that saved them after a poor shooting start. It was also a game where everyone one contributed. Gilbert Arenas and Nick Young had dramatic stretches that changed the game but it truly was a team effort. Alonzo Gee started and responded with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. Gee will be busy again tonight as he will be onLeBron James. John Wall, Al Thornton, and Yi Jianlian did not take part in yesterday’s practice and we will update you on their status for tonight as we know it. The Heat had a players only meeting after their loss on Saturday to the Mavericks. The Heat are 9-8 this season…the same record at this time last year. Well luckily, the guys you named are only guaranteed to be here this season, contractually speaking. There is hope that once some of these guys leave (maybe as early as February 2011), it will open doors for actual draftees by the home team.
I think it is a safe bet Booker will get minutes since he’s currently getting a teaspoon amount as a “green rookie”. I like Ka-veen’s size and the Wiz have not had a legitimate body since Haywood. Haywood has the pedigree but Seraphin’s got the athleticism.

If the Wiz don’t mind a headcase, they can re-trade Yi to the Nets for Terrence Williams, Quinton Ross, and cash if there is worry at the SF position regarding inconsistent production. LOL.

like tom said, let’s get a win tonight. we can definitely outplay this team if we put forth energy like the magic game. it all comes down to out rebounding them, and playing good defense.
but blatche is going to have to guard the pick and roll a lot, so he better not put half effort attempts at it, or we will get destroyed. the heat have been using a wade/lebron and bosh pick and roll a lot this season, so blatche better be ready. if we can force wade/lebron into a jumpshot, they won’t make a lot of them and we just have to get the rebound. so javale needs to be ready too.
i actually feel better about this game then i do the magic game. i never thought i’d be saying that at the beginning of the season, but now, it’s pretty clear the heat are at a disarray, so let’s take them down.

The key tonight is perimeter defense. The boards may not be as much of a problem, if we play the way we played Saturday night. The problem will be if Lebron, Wade, or Bosh start hitting a lot of outside shots. We may get killed if that happens.

imo, if lebron, wade, and bosh beat us with outside shots, so be it. that’s what we need to force them into, outside shots. if they are hitting those, they are pretty much unstoppable.
i’d rather make them make outside shots than give up driving lanes to the rim. on their best nights, they will hit 60% of their outside shots. on their worst nights they are going to hit 70% of their layups and dunks. (yes these are guestimations lol) so if they are hitting jumpshots, we have to live with it.

I think either Wall will sit out this game or come off the bench because if there is 1 guy that has owned us over the years, its Wade but if there is one guy who has guarded him better then anyone in the league, its Hinrich. Thats why I dont see Flip benching him in this game. I dont see us going small because he wont want any of them on Lebron. Therfore Wall sits or comes off the bench is my guess.
I also see Gil getting to guard the 1 alot this game which he doesnt get to do that much of while also being guarded by Wade so Im very interested in seeing how Gil performs in this one. They start a good but soft Bosh and an old slow Big Z. That means Gil should attack off the pick & roll like he did alot last game. If Gil did that 2 games in a row, made some layups, and got to the line, then that would bode very well for our future. It would be like the final step in his confidence, besides hitting a game winner again

I think its hilarious how people want to do the same thing, but want different results. lol.. Talk about wishful thinking.
Look, if we want to keep losing like we have been doing except for the when we play the worse teams in the league, then we shouldnt change a thing. keep the Flip/Tom inspired starting lineup as is. then we should win about 23 games at the end of the season. But if we are going to win more games than that, we need to make a change. If you want something you never had before, you have to do something you have never done before. the same old, wont get it done. NY should start, PERIOD! No “if’s” , “and’s” or “but’s” about it. KS played the best D on dwight. not the best D on ilgauskas, the best D on Dwight Howard. That says something. He needs more Playing time. I really hope to see Gil, Nick, Gee, Blatche and McGee start tonight. If Wall can go tonight and Flip tries to get Kirk to match up with LeBron in that 3 guard rotation, im gona higher a “back of the head smacker” and send him after Flip!

Actually KS DID play the best D on Dwight. No One in the LEAGUE can stop dwight one on one. But that doesnt mean you cant play well against him. Thats exactly what KS did. If you were expecting to see someone STOP him, you must not watch much basketball. KS did what we needed him to do. Played solid and didnt get all turned around defending him or overpowered. thats all you can ask for without a double team which Flip didnt seem to want to call. but thats another story.

Players need someone to believe in….that’s why Phil/Larry Brown/Byron Scott/lil general are successful.
The players respect them and will fun through a brick wall for their cause(s). If the players don’t believe in your system or don’t put forth the effort, this may be the outcome (miami heat), no matter how good the individual player may be…imo

McGee would be great going against big slow Z but greater in this game is Gil. Last year I wouldnt think Gil would do anything hardly in a game like this in Flip’s system but I think Flip has changed that pick & roll Offense. Its much easier to attack off it then it was last year and I think if Gil is mentally right and attacks then he will own Z or any of there bigs off of it and pick that defense apart on scores, FT’s, or assist

zoid but I dont think thats the main point. I think if they were losing like that then people could understand it. If the big 3 were getting theres and the rest of the team sucked then people would understand but thats not the case. The big 3 have looked like crap for the most part. Theyve been average at best and have no chemistry togetehr. They probably envy our horrible chemistry with there’s being so bad

McGee is going to blast some blocks tonight… i bet LBJ gets rocked at the rim all night an poor Bosh plays just like a soft flower around the rim.. so he is going to get the McGee effect the only one we need to watch about is Wade and i think Wall would have no problem keeping up with him if he can go… if not Kirk will get the job done !! its going to be twice as fun to watch Gee and Booker take turns on LBJ Booker is just as strong and as fast and can jump that might be the best Defender we have had on him in years

I would like to see some stuff on how Howard is coming along and could he be ready to play soon. I would also like to see how Seraphin is coming along with the English language. How is Gee fitting back in with his new teammates. He seems like he likes it here better then SA when it comes to personalities. Last but not least, show us how Gil is responding to teammates & vice versa. Is he like a big brother, does he feel the love again, are him & Wall pretty close.

also — I still don’t get what difference it makes to you whether Nick starts or comes off the bench as long as he gets 30+ minutes. Yes, he is playing much better. But I want him in mostly when he is the first offensive option.

I want Nick to start for the same reason Zoid posted. whenever Nick gets in the game we are already behind and he helps give us a boost to try a comeback. but If Nick is in the game from the start, perhaps we wouldnt be down by so much to begin with. At the end of the day whoever puts the ball in the hoop more, wins. Nick puts the ball in the hoop at a high rate. Most people on here that want Nick to come off the bench, want this because they think it will be too much scoring on the floor at one time. but where is this scoring they are talking about? we are not a high scoring team. if anything, we dont have enough scorers on the floor.

I think it’s good for Wall to come off the bench for awhile.. Gil & Kirk have great chemistry and Gil is getting better each game.

IMO Cartier Martin should get more time.. He’s pretty good at 3’s.
What is with the incessant need to keep talking about trading Gilbert.. It would make zero sense.
I agree with Tom that he won’t be the player he was 4 years ago, I think he’ll be better. To the people
who want to get rid of Gil and Kirk and Josh, do you just want to watch young guys developing for 5
years or so. Would you rather go to the lottery than the playoffs? Some of us think that you play a game
to win it and you play the best people you have.

I’m not making this up – those that saw ORL-WSH live heard the same thing – unless they’ve got eustachian tubes like Helen Keller.
I have to trust the announcer on this one for now no matter how fluent your French linguistic skills are.

Armstrong will start at Center. I don’t think there is any question with that.
Blatche vs. Bosh makes more sense on the defensive end than Blatche vs. Joel Anthony/Ilgauskas.
With injuries to key guys, does this mean another L before the ball is jumped? Does Flip get another “excused absence”?
Gil needs to make 33 threes + 1 FT to get to 100 points. Carlos Arroyo or whoever the PG is can’t check Gil from the perimeter.

Im guessing McGee is probably out also unless he’s really needed. I wouldnt be shocked if Gil goes off but dont just assume it because of Arroyo. Remember that we will start Kirk beside Gil which means that I could see Arroyo guarding him alot while Wade guards Gil, espically if Gil starts to get hot. Thats why it would probably be great to actually start NY at the 2 tonight with Kirk off the bench but Flip will never do that. With Arroyo having to guard either NY or Gil, it would be great for us

You know what’s stupid? If the Wiz win tonight (on the road, no less), the media will be like “well, the Heat is in disarray and they’re not concentrating to play a game against opponents of any magitude”.
The media (aka ESPN) won’t even give credit to the Wiz for pulling in a quality win.
As we have voiced similar thoughts alongside Buckhantz and Johnson and Consor, the Wiz will simply win games against opponents they shouldn’t strictly on the fact they’re playing harder. If kirk and Gil are in the game at the same time, i highly doubt arroyo will be guarding Gil. unless Spolestra is purposely trying to get fired. Arroyo will guard Kirk, Wade will probably be on Gil And LeBron matched up with Gee. Bosh nor Ilgauskas can play D so it doesnt really matter who is matched up against Blatche, but neither of them will need to play much D if Dray is chucking up long shots. I think KS can body up Bosh a little bit to get him out of his groove. at least thats how i envision it.

If Wade is on Gil then I hope Gil stays aggressive. Sometimes he can mentally pull back in situations like that and settle for long, contested, off balance jumpers, that he looks like he’s just shooting up just to shoot. I hope that guy doesnt show up

for us to be playing the Heat, this game has been pretty boring by both teams. I like that Blatche is attacking. I dont like that Gil is chucking up shots. Kirk is pretty much invisible on the court. The Heat seem so stagnant. none of their players seem into the game. The Wiz better take advantage now

Nice defense in the 1st quarter. lets keep it up! I dont think i ever seen Nick go up for a challenged dunk in the half court offense like that. He got it blocked but i love the attempt and the mind set! he can be more than just a shooter when teams have to worry about him making plays like that it will open up more things for him.

Wow !!!! way to go Blatche… cant believe only 4 points this qtr so far…We have sooo much trouble makin a bucket period.. some of the looks we get are hard, but we are missin the open ones too… they are all short… very few long misses… and we should be underneath for the rebound on all of them, but no one wants to crash the boards… we need to throw around what muscle we have underneath… we’ll create the fouls, not get called for them…

Flip is a total embarrassment as a coach. His offense is bad; his defense is horrible; his rotations are beyond belief. FLOP – get the ball to Andray and have Gil at the top of the key and Slick ball-side with ‘Dray. One of them will get a GOOD shot.

there is a clear cut piece of evidence why hinrich’s days as a starter is done.
he has traditionally been a very good free throw shooter; however, this season he’s been subpar.
shooting free throws is concentration — blocking out the noise and focusing on the basket with your follow-through.
when hinrich misses easy points, his mind is not on the game.
he’s done coach — once wall is healthy; it’ll be 0 & 2 forever

Is it just me or is this game eerily similar to the Magic game? Its like we’re down but we can easily get back into the game if we hit the shots that we normally make. We’re getting great looks for the most part but they just werent going down early. It got better as the game went on but we can get alot better in the 2nd half.
I wouldnt be shocked if Gil & NY heat up in the 2nd half. Im also kind of surprised that Flip hasnt ran more high screen plays with Gil as the point and HA or McGee as the guys setting the screen. That way Gil can be one on one with Z or Damp. I thought we would do that all game but we havent done it once for some reason

I would also like to see Gee be more aggressive. I love it that he’s playing team ball but you can tell in both of these starts that he doesnt want to come in as a new guy & look for his shot alot. He’s worried about stepping on other guys toes but the truth is that his drives help us out. Sadly though him, NY, Dray, & Gil either get blocked or fouled at the rim with no call and we arent getting those easy shots. Make some of those & hit the open J and we can steal this in the 2nd half

well, i won’t blame anyone as much as we were shorthanded (i watched, but didn’t watch)…..i wasn’t impressed by the heat as a team as much as we were beat by a few players….still penetrating on us
If nothing else, with all of our big guys, let’s get an identity of the human fly swatter in Javale, or get banged by the rest of the guys?

Fearless prediction: The Wiz will win at least one game this week. The Wiz are good for one win/week.
Nice to see the Wiz show a little spunk out there.
Why is it that every other team has the big guy jump out at the shooter on the high screen and pop but the Wiz are content to let the guy setting the pick take one step to the side to let the shooter get a good look at the hoop for the 18 foot shot while his defender steps over with him? Every other team pinches the shooter and makes it a difficult shot.
The Wiz need more defense and length at the 2 position. I suggest starting Gee at the 2 with Gil and put Cartier at the 3. That is until John comes back. When he does I suggest John guard the 2 guard. He has more length than Gil.
Kirk is not making anything happen at the point. He can’t beat anyone off the dribble and he has trouble passing around bigger players. The ball just doesn’t move when he is in there. Plus, his shot is iffy from one night to the next.

Nobody could hit the broad side of the barn tonight. We got open looks… couldn’t hit them. It happens.
Gil and Andray kept us in it for a while, but, they have too much talent for us. We are getting there, but, it isn’t going to be an overnight process.
@ Fusey… LOL… I loved the Wolf Blitzer… not Blitzen (which is a reindeer) thing. Very funny and seasonally festive at the same time
Booker is starting to look like he may just be the beast we were hoping for. Missing layups isn’t a good thing lol, but, his intensity on defense sure is. His shot will come.

I didn’t watch the game but looking at this box score as well as almost all other box scores from the mIamI heat they are a joke. How does your starting PG consistantly get the least number of assist of any player on your team. How the hell can the refs justify giving double digit free throw attempts to 3 players from the same team.
Gils buzzer beater is proof he should have just taken a long range shot to win the game against Orlando the other night.
If John Wall plays the last 2 games I think we might have gotten 2 wins.
We need to stop playing this stupid zone D

BBKI… couldn’t agree more. We have some defensive minded players. We don’t “need” to incoorperate the zone defense. Let these defensive, young, energetic guys shine on their own.

KeVeen Seraphon has impressed me in the limited time he has had. Against Dwight Howard he not only stood his ground, but, knocked “superman” off his spot more than once. The “swing for the fences” is a deep shot to left field right now… I like what I see for the future though. I’m guessing his batting percentage goes up from here

Dray Talk & Im Encouraged
Dray’s still not shooting that great but I thought in the last 2 games, he physically moved as well as Ive seen him all year. He’s looking quick again and not like a slug like he was prior to that. I think he’s knocking off the rust and his conditioning is coming back, hence the 22 boards in the last 2 games. Ill take that any day. I think his shooting & shot selection will start to get better now due to him regaining the conditiong & timing.
We have a bad record right now and some tough games coming up but I actually think we will start to play well & win. We play at Toronto next game and if Dray keeps the energy up, along with Gil getting his timing back, I think we win. We then have some hard games after that but pretty much all those teams have trouble with the quicker athletic teams. I think these last 2 games showed Flip that Hinrich shouldnt start. Hopefully next game will be the 1st where we have the Wall-Gil backcourt with no Hinrich in the starting group. Thats when you can really judge how well Wall & Gil play together and I think they will look fine.
We will probably also get Al back in the next game or 2 and Yi will probably be back within the next 3 games. We then can start Wall-Gil-Al-Dray-McGee while coming off the bench with Hinrich-NY-Gee-Yi-HA. I like that mix of guys. We should be pretty athletic at all times while having a nice mix of youth & vetrans on both units. McGee will continue to improve and I see Dray & Gil only getting better. Get Wall back to get us some easy transistion baskets and another guy to put pressure on the D & keep teams in foul trouble, and I think you will see a different team from here on out. Then we will be saying how much it sucks that we lost early against all those bad teams that we shouldve beaten

Hinrich is not shooting well but he IS the Wizards best on the ball defender and if he ever finds his comfort zone he will be okay. Arenas is still the man. Not shooting that well either but when they do look out.

Hinrich lost his job as a starting PG in Chicago to Derrick Rose. No surprises there.
However, he also lost his job as a hybrid 2-guard during his prime (they tried to play him alongside Rose) and became a “Ben Gordon/Manu-type” – come off the bench and provide about 10 points [and provide his style of hardnose defense]).
After nearly 20 games, it is evident the best role for Kirk is a backup role. If Arenas was in shape at the start of the season and if Wall never got hurt, Flip is an idiot for not pairing those 2 together alongside Thornton, Blatche, and McGee. These 5 guys are athletic and can run many teams out of the gym.
I attribute Hinrich’s supposed contribution to what AD did to relieve Gilbert back in the day – which should be a change of pace but also try not to put the team in a hole the starters can’t help dig out of.
Kirk and Nick showed me the last couple of games they have a pretty good awareness with each other. This is a nice start for solidifying the bench. Add Yi and others to the mix and the team should be much better in the near future.

The Hinrich defense is all hype. Trust me when I say that Im not a hater because in his prime I would tell anyone that Hinrich was the best perimiter defender in the whole league. Thats how good I thought he was. Now honestly, I think he’s our worst guy. I think NY, Gil, Wall, Martin, and so on can stay in front there guy better then Kirk. He never was an athelte so now that he’s older & has slowed down, he just cant keep up with the quicker guards who are getting more athletic every year and at the 3 he’s too small

I’m sure every team enjoys a win over the current Miami lineup more than any other victory. Lets go get one.
Lets start all the guys that crozy, dlt20, dcbuler, et. al. have suggested need to start: Cartier Martin, Alonzo Gee, Kevin Seraphin, Nick Young, and… ok John Wall at the point. First guy off the bench should be Lester Hudson. Oh, wait… he’s not with us any more.
Naw, it’ll be the usual starters, and if we play the way we did against Orlando we have a good chance to win.
Big thumbs up for all and sundry!!!!
