Thanksgiving Game Day Atlanta
6:04 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in and wishing only the best for all of or Wizards Bloggers on this Thanksgiving holiday. We are certainly thankful for the friendships we have made on this Blog through the years. We started this Game Day BLOG….blogging live during games..back in 2007 and it is something both Glenn and i truly look forward to each night. Looking forward to seeing the Wizards build on Tuesday’s win over the Sixers but also get off to a better start than we did against the Sixers. The improbable overtime win against the Sixers showed the character of this team. They played through a bad start and just kept scrapping. The fight and competitive spirit of this team is something that really has been shining through all year with the exception of the season opener in Orlando. The Hawks are a good team but they have lost three in a row and seven of their last night games since starting 6-0….Wizards are still looking for their first road win.THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from Atlnta as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link at the top of the page. We start at 7:00 PM.
7:35 PM …Dave and Glenn at Phillips Arena…hope everyone has had a great day…Al Thornton is out with a sprained left ankle…Could see Gilbert Arenas, John Wall, and Kirk Hinrich all start with Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee…

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Looking forward to a great game tonight. We have been either straight garbage or terribly boring seemingly in every single National TV game weve gotten the last few years. Its time for a change. Hopefully Wall’s leg is ok and we can finally see the Wall-Gil backcourt make a start together. Maybe even Yi can make a return off the bench. Im torn on the NY thing. I think Id still rather have Al start this game if he can go because I think we will have enough scoring in the starting group without NY and then we can come off the bench with him, Kirk, and maybe Yi. That would be great.
Atlanta is a tricky team. Weve always matched up pretty well with them but this game will be different. They have a big SG in JJ and a big SF in Williams. Gil will be matched up against JJ and if we go small then Kirk will matchup against Williams. Williams has sucked this year but it would be dumb to start Kirk. It has to be either Al, NY, Gee, or Booker. Either way I expect to see alot of Zone this game. The Gil-JJ matchup will be special. Both have there advantages. I wouldve taken Gil in his prime easily because he would blow past a 6’8 guy like it was nothing & finish at the rim. He still can dribble past you when he wants even though he lost a step but the problem is he cant finish. Maybe he can do some drive & dish or kicks.
This is our chance to make a statement. We have a National TV game, our 1st game with the Gil-Wall backcourt, we have 3 games around with the top 3 in our division and 3 of the top teams in the East, and we can shut Barkley up for clowning us. I think we will show up. I think we will run, look very exciting, and come away with the victory

Sorry to hear about Thornton. I’m afraid that that might mean that we’ll see more of that horrid three-guard game. We almost lost the Sixers game because we were short-handed in the rebounding department with the three-guards in the game together. Once we had some additional size, we started the comeback. We have enough shooters with Gil, John, JaVale, and ‘Dray. We can afford to get less scoring out of the 3-spot by starting Booker and having him just play solid “D” and hit the boards. Additionally, Slick and Kirk can score coming off the bench.
Comment from dlts20
Time November 25, 2010 at 2:23 PM
Start Gee, Martin, or NY. Not Kirk. Too many ball handlers & not enough rebounding.
I dont think Flip will go with Kirk since it didnt start too well in the 2nd half against Philly and we got alot better when we benched him for NY. Also, we are playing some big 3′s coming up, including Lebron. Flip said in the Preseason that he wouldnt start that group against guys like Lebron so Im guessing he will go a different route tonight

draftazoid, dlts is saying start gee in place of booker instead of hinrich at the three.
and i agree with him, don’t start the 3 guard lineup, we need rebounding.
start a rebounder like booker or gee who can also defend, and one that doesn’t need a lot of shots.
Comment from draftazoid
Time November 25, 2010 at 2:47 PM
No chance Flip starts a guy that was just cut from another team.
If he does then that tells you that ALL of our small forwards suck.
You might as well cut them all.
Comment from gray16
Time November 25, 2010 at 2:51 PM
gee got cut from the spurs… that’s not exactly a bad thing, that’s getting cut from a top 5 team in the league.
flip starting him over a rookie, and a 6’2 guard isn’t a bad thing, especially when he had so much success for us last season.
you could say start nick, but i think tom was right in what he said about needing offense off the bench. with nick in the starting lineup his shots will get reduced and he’ll be out there for nothing.
so i definitely wouldn’t mind starting gee.

From probasketball talk:
“That said he has a non-guaranteed deal with the Wizards, so they can cut him before mid January if they wished.”
So much for the faith the Wizards have of him.
No NBA team offered him a guaranteed- OR HE WOULD HAVE SIGNED WITH ANOTHER TEAM.
Just bringing back everone to reality with Alonzo Gee.

My Starting Lineup:
PG- John Wall
SG- Gilbert Arenas
SF- Trevor Booker
PF- Andray Blatche
C- Javale McGee
The rest of the rotation:
Kirk Hinrich
Nick Young
Al Thornton or Yi
Hilton Armstrong
9 Man rotation. Everyone else gets the best seats in the house, unless there is an injury.
If Yi is healthy then I will lean toward playing Yi instead of Thornton.
Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time November 25, 2010 at 3:25 PM
@draftazoid, have you ever seen Alonzo Gee play basketball?
Both Thornton and Yi are out so that really leaves us with Kirk, Booker or Slick at the 3-spot. I agree with gray16 that with John, Gil, ‘Dray and Javale on the floor there will be little opportunity for Slick to get the ball (unless it is crunch time, he is not one of Flip’s top offensive options). We’d be better off having him provide some fire-power off the bench. If the instructions to Booker are defend and rebound and forget about getting your number called, I believe that he could really contribute.

All I know about Alonzo Gee is that he was just cut from San Antonio on November 12 and no one signed him for 10 days until the Wizards gave him a NON-GUARANTEED contract.
This is pretty much a Tryout for GEE.
I don’t count my chickens (or turkeys) on non-guaranteed players. Just like what happened to Hudson, once you find someone who is a little better then that player becomes disposable.

I’m sure everyone has something to be thankful for. Now that the holiday season has officially been kicked off, remember this is a season for giving also…..Happy Holidays
In regards to Gee, last year he was instant energy as soon as he joined our team. He gave the team something that was very much needed(He attacked the rim and had a sweet jumper also….he was much better than NY at the time and may still be better). Once his 10 day contract was over, SA came after him, since he was on their DLeague team, prior to us signing him to a 10 day contract.

This could be the game where Javalle announces his arrival as an impact center to the national audience. No one on the Hawks can stop him if he is reacting well to the flow of the game.

Flip’s an idiot. The #1 worry everyone had in the Offseason was how would Gil & Wall coexist because there might not be enough balls to go around. So what does Flip do? He adds another 6’4 ball handler in the mix to start? It makes no sense. Then everyone knows that our regular starting lineup will be with Howard at the 3. The backup is Al and then you have NY. So why is Kirk even considered? Its stupid.
Not only that but you take out Wall & bring in NY but we still stay in the zone defense even though Atlanta went small by taking out Williams for Evans. Man those guys up now since we arent super small anymore. Then on top of that you play a 3-2 zone where our 2 bigs are spread way out on the perimiter and the middle is wide open. Its dumb. He puts us in a whole every single game. The funny thing is that the 2 guys it hurts the most are seemingly the 2 guys we need the most in Wall & Gil. Kirk is the one who always ends up looking the best in the screwed up lineups

I’m starting to believe that we have a group of shoot-first guards.
Flop – Don’t have 3 guards on the floor at the same time (1) we are not big enough to defend; (2) we are not big enough to rebound; (3) we tend to have the guards shoot.
Flip – Just in case you didn’t get the memo…You are terrible.

We have a super fast point guard in John Wall but in the first quarter we do not give him the personnel to run with him.
We have fast guys, except for Javale, they are on the bench.
Why is Gilbert playing against a absolutely athletic team like Atlanta when he cannot drive. Zero free throws and horrible shooting.
Against Detroit and Toronto that is OK but not against the Hawks.
Comment from dcbutler357

This is an insult to the team. Did any other teams use a three guard lineup in the hawks seven losses? Did we do our homework (coaches) prior to playing, to determine their weaknesses. We put ourselves in a hole before he made one substitution.
Coach failed miserably in that half.
Comment from ChenierFan
Time November 25, 2010 at 10:22 PM
Flip started the team out with a passive frame of mind- playing a zone defense, with 3 guards who were cold from the field. That’s a recipe for getting blown out.
The team kept up that passive frame of mind. You need to be agressive. These slow starts to every game are the coach’s fault.
I thought Javalle would have a good game tonight, but he has been terrible so far.

Let’s see if I understand this correctly…’Dray had 10 points in the first quarter and has 12 at the half (I wonder why that happened?). Slick is 4/5. Flop’s three-guard offense is 5-21. Does anyone think that Flop will decide that his 3-guard offense should be scrapped in the second half? Anyone who thinks “Yes”, has not paid much attention to this guy’s coaching style.
The Wizards have NO CHANCE to make the playoffs following Flip’s coaching schemes.
Comment from jeffmalone1990

I think McGee has been a factor on changing shots and rebounding and blocks, however he cannot do it alone……8 reb’s and a block so far….again we need a change in philosophy than the guards and forwards launching jump shots?
We do not run enough plays that feed the big’s in the post, the offense would run so much smoother…yet I heard a report that Flip does not think McGee is big enough to play the post????????Are you serious???????

We have a young team that needs a coach who has the players’ best interests in mind. SWe need a coach who is able to develop their talents and design both an offense and a defense that will provide those players with the best opportunites to be successful. If Ted L’s aim is to develop a winning team by developing young players, he should take a long, hard look at his current head coach who appears totally inept in being able to provide young players with an opportunity to be successful. Flop’s primary goal appears to be to find someone, something to blame for a loss. It is NEVER him. Good coaches recognize that it is ALWAYS them: They didn’t prepare properly; they didn’t play the appropriate players; they didn’t use the correct offensive schemes; they didn’t use the appropriate defensive schemes. Young players need instruction AND encouragement. They should not have to overcome the coaches inadequacies in order to be successful.

Wall, Gil, & Kirk
Flip has to bench Kirk. Why not? He can still get minutes off the bench. If Howard comes back then he’s the starting 3 anyways. Even then we have Al as a backup and we have NY in the mix. Why does he have to start Kirk. I honestly dont think Wall is worried about playing with Gil. I think Wall is worried about how to play with both Gil & Kirk. I honestly dont think Gil is worried about playing with Wall. I think Gil is worried about how to play with both Wall & Kirk. Its just 1 guy too many.
Even if youre not a Gil fan, you have to start him just so he can get his stats up and be traded. We are 14 games in and still have yet to start Gil & Wall by themselves. You wont find out anything until they get out there together without Kirk. Then you can decide it doesnt work, or one guy cant play with the other, or whatever but you will never know until you start those 2 without Kirk. It just doesnt work with all 3. Its stupid. Again, you cant say to bench Gil and start Kirk because they Gil will have no trade value. Youre just going to have a 80mil max guy on the bench for Kirk and knowing that the team still wont be good? NO!
We only have 1 chance to be good and thats with Gil & Wall with Kirk as the backup PG. Stop messing around and run it already. If it doesnt work then we will know but you cant judge anything until then. You cant even judge them individually because they arent going to play right until then. Its just a bad mix and it hurts the whole team & Offense. Not to mention we cant stop anyone and when we do, they still get the Offensive rebound
Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time November 25, 2010 at 11:52 PM
It is important that we get Gil tons of minutes to see if he can regain his form. It doesn’t matter if those minutes are against the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team. He needs the minutes.
Gil is our offensive creator hope. If he can get it going, we have a better opportunity to win.
It looks as though whenever any of our players has a good game, he has a following less-than-good-game. That is the result of being out-scouted and subsequently out-coached. If Flop is relying on scouting reports from Tapout, he is more of a fool than I first thought.

wow, the “play your best players” meant play your best players for the respective position….you mean to tell me a man with flips experience doesn’t respect the value of having a small forward on the floor, instead of three point guards? he shouldn’t have to get fired, he should retire.

What’s the point of 3 guards offense? We have big enough guys: Nick can shoot, Martin or Gee can play defense and they don’t need the ball to be effective. Gil plays better when he runs the show. I guess we are not trying to win. And 2-3 zone? I wish Bob Huggins is coaching the wizards.
Maybe I don’t know enough about basketball.

The Wizards need to bring Wall in off the bench. Wall is very good but he has not learned to control the tempo of a game. I have nothing at all against Wall. Wall is not effective when the ball is walked up the court. The Wizards miss Thornton in the lineup.
By the way Arenas is not only a very good pg but he and Hinrich should start in the back court.

btw-we saw gil/jwall/ny run together and in what three minutes they outscored Philly 14-2. we know they can play together, flip isn’t using his resources properly/effectively.
THERE WAS NO WAY NY should have been on that bench for all that time. Flip still doesn’t know how to mix his starters with his bench. He thinks or seems to think, heck nevermind, i’m not trying to figure out his mental state, it’s wack….lol

Start Wall and Nick at the Guards.
Nick has proven that he is the best Big Guard.
Keep playing Gilbert with the 3rd stringers like he played tonight. He did a heck of a job running the show and patting his stats against Atlantas bottom of the bench in the 4th quarter.
What was up with that?

Flip runs a zone because he does not know to coach nba defensive basketball. We are headed back to the lottery. I predict Flip will be fired before season ends. Sam Cassell will serve as interim coach.
If Flip is let go who is the best candidate to take over our young talent.
is it Mike Brown or is it someone else?

I’m still shocked that we had to witness that mess last night. I mean really, what was his point? If your three is hurt, you just start the person that backs him up……Heinrich should never be on the floor with Gil and Jwall, unless its during warm-ups.
Just when you think we are about to turn the corner, flip reminds us that he is coaching the team…..smdh.

Time November 26, 2010 at 9:23 AM
I was only able to see a little of last night’s game, but I did record it to watch later today.
We played a team that is *much better* than we are, not a rebuilding team, and we played them on their court. We lost. Is that really a big deal? Is it really a surprise?
We don’t have a coaching problem. We have a team in transition. Overall, I’ve been incredibly pleased so far w/ the way we’re playing.
We have 3 very nice things to concentrate on: John Wall is taking hold in a hurry, showing that he can be a very good NBA player and maybe much more. JaVale has taken a giant step forward. Even on nights when he isn’t all that, he still seems to get a lot done. And Nick is showing that he might be an effective NBA player after all. Three really good things right there. And they mean that so far we’ve won more games than I thought we would.
Trevor has shown signs of promise, and if one could be confident that he was going to turn out an above average pro, that would be a *great* 4th thing.
But these good indications don’t mean that we’re a playoff contender this year for a number of reasons. Gil is not the player he used to be and doesn’t really look like he will be either (please don’t respond by pointing to his good performances — look at *all* his performances). Kirk, even though he is playing *much better* than I expected, is a player past his prime like Gil. Al is no good, Dray is disappointingly inconsistent, Yi did nothing much, and Hilton Armstrong ain’t much even tho improved. That leaves raw rookies and d-league players off the bench.
That’s not a team that goes to the playoffs. We’re on track to win 25-28 games. Maybe we’ll do better than that, maybe worse. If you moan over every loss you’ll have a long season.
As to coaching, Phil Jackson could not get this team to the NBA playoffs. Duh.

Right now there are 6 teams in the league with worse records than the Wizards, 1 team tied with us, and 1 team that’s 1/2 game above us.
Our wins have come vs. the Sixers, Rockets, Raptors and Grizzlies. In their other games, against the rest of the league, these teams are a combined 19-35. We’ve only beaten very bad teams, and we’ve only done it at home.
The teams we’ve lost to, combined, are 44-49 against the rest of the league. 5 of our losses were to Boston, Atlanta, Chicago and Orlando. But we’ve also lost to 2 bad teams on the road and 2 bad teams at home. Only 2 NBA teams are winless on the road, the Wizards and the Clippers.
Overall, we’ve had a very easy schedule so far. Between now and Jan. 1, we play 18 games. It’s a much tougher schedule than we’ve had so far.
Of the 10 home games, 7 are against teams that have winning records right now. Of the 8 road games, 4 are against teams that have winning records right now.
Fasten your seatbelts.

I have a question for those that say we should not play zone but play man to man:
1. Who is Flip protecting on the floor by playing a Zone Defense?
The answer is really obvious. If we played Man to Man and this player was on the floor for 36 minutes playing man we would be absolutely slaughtered.

Yes, Tom M. we do have a coaching problem. When you get a chance to watch the game later today, please pay attention to where JaVale McGee 7’0″ and Andray Blatche 6’11″ are stationed in Flip’s zone defense. They are where one would think the guards should be playing…the perimeter. Then take a look at where John, Gil and Kirk are playing on defense…under the basket. If you don’t think that that is stupid coaching then…

How can a coach complain about his “bigs” being out-rebounded when he plays them on the perimeter on defense and has them setting high screens on offense. Makes it a little difficult to get to the basket for a rebound doesn’t it?
Top that off by matching your two “bigs” against the opposition’s three “bigs”. Unless you are living in fantasyville, there is no way that you might think that you are not going to get out-rebounded when you have three guards in the game at the same time.

Having a bad team and the inability to play the “correct” players is entirely two different things.
Voicing an opinion that is not saying “you’re doing a good job” is not negative
Society gives us more people that try to find a way to place a bad connotation on something other than what the original topic instead of focusing on the real problem…..someone is definitely a politician on here…if someone’s first words are “i didn’t see the game” then their input has no value whatsoever until they see what the fuss is about….PERIOD

but i did see enough to know our defense must have been horrible.
i’m not surprised flip is getting the blame, as he does every game we lose, and i’m not going to say he isn’t at fault as i didn’t see the game…
however, say all you want, a team with good defensive players will not give up 116 points that easily (90+ through 3 quarters), i’m sorry. we can put some blame on the coach, but let’s not get delusional and say the players aren’t at fault.

@ gotabig — whew, we haven’t lost you! I’ll take a look at the defensive positioning.
There’s no doubt you’re right about the rebounding deficit from having Kirk at the 3, but we don’t fix that with Nick obviously (they rebound at @ the same rate), and unfortunately we don’t have anyone else for the moment!

I agree with not playing the 3 guard rotation.
So we should start John Wall and the best playing 2 guard so far this year, Nick Young.
People worry about fire power from the second unit. Gilbert should be able to provide that lift.
This will also allow us to play man to man to start the game with Wall and Nick, who has played outstanding defense the last two games.
We already know that we play zone to protect Gilbert. (IMO). We wont have to now except when he comes in.
Comment from JWALL

I believe we should start Trevor Booker at the three so we can have more of a physical presence on the frontline. While we could start Kirk or Nick. While Nick matches up with Quentin Richardson. We need to be more physical.
We are very passive on the boards and we need a scrapper out there until Al or Josh gets back.,

I wonder – why not use Dwight Howard’s own strength to get himself in foul trouble? In other words, since there is NO ONE on the Wizards that can actually defend D12, why not let him run over the Wiz defender and have refs call offensive fouls?
It is a realistic strategy and it works well against overly dominant players like Shaq.

I expect a near sell-out crowd tomorrow at the Verizon Center. The Wiz do play very well at home, but they also play stinkers against teams with a proven track record.
I’m sure no one forgot about the first game of the season down in Orlando. I remember blogging I don’t think ORL played particularly well that game but they still dominated the Wiz by 32-ish?
ps – why did GABBO spent nearly 10 c-notes on tomorrow’s game? that’s rather insane, no?

that last game still has me mad i don’t know how you can coach a team run a 3 gard line up and then go zone when you are already on the short end of the rebounding stick something tells me we are going to be in for a much longer season than i thought and thats bad!
Comment from bullets_fusion
Time November 26, 2010 at 11:45 PM
First of all, you don’t need to be a flopper to take a legitimate charge. You need a flopper to take illigitimate charges. Guys like Dwight Howard rams his shoulder into the defender – that’s an offensive foul. I’m saying when the Wiz knows this is happening, the guy has to take a charge.
Second, I don’t think McGee can get any stronger – he’s built like a string-bean and he’ll always be a string bean. He’s a finesse center and not a power center. McGee can block 11 times a game but he’ll never be able to defend, 1-on-1, against Shaq, Howard, Al Jefferson, and guys with a large girth.
Third, I think we all know that tomorrow’s 4 of 5 starters are going to be
Wall/Hinrich/??/Blatche/McGee
?? is probably going to be someone NO ONE likes to be starting with this group.

Good morning all!
Let’s start our first streak of the season tonight!
Atlanta can be handled if everybody comes to play! And the following two games will give us an opportunity to really shock some people! (You said it, Andray!)
I would be happy if we play hard and avoid blowouts against Orlando and Miami. Should we sneak out of those games with a win, it would be AWESOME!!!
GOOOOOOOO WIZARDS!!!!!
