Game Day Sixers

7:34 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in…spent time yesterday with Bob Dandridge and Kevin Grevey and they are enjoying watching the Wizards learn and grow. Part of that process is game’s like Sunday where the Wizards should have won but could not close. As Flip Saunders said it was as tough as loss as he has had since he has been with the Wizards. As we discussed on the radio Glenn and I were impressed with the team’s energy from the start and that includes on defense. Yes the Pistons ended up shooting 48%, but the defensive effort was also there as I remember the Pistons making several tough shots just before the end of the 24 second clock. JaVale McGee is enjoying a consistent stretch. As Dandirdge said yesterday, “JaVale just needs to bring energy and good things will happen.” It will be exciting if John Wall can return tonight. Wall did practice yesterday. And yes even though Gilbert Arenas and Kirk Hinrich have played exceptionally well together, there is room for all three. Our best wishes to a first class guy Lester Hudson who was released yesterday. Alonzo Gee is back and he was a fan favorite in the 11 games he played  last season for the Wizards before going to the Spurs. Gee is a guy who fits in with the Wizards desire to push the ball. Here’s to another good night against the Sixers..and let’s hope in regulation….THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from Verizon Center  as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE    link at the top of the page. We start at 7:00 PM.

6:34 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in….starters are in….Arenas and Hinrich are the giards…Blatche and Thronton the forwards  and McGee at center…John Wall is active…Sixers  will go with Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner at guards…Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand at forwards and center Spencer Hawes.

i hope young gets some minutes tonight even if wall returns. heck i’d start him at the three. young has a tendency to light up the sixers, so why not capitalize on history, make it happen flip.

but we are going to need the guards to step up on d. we need iggy, williams, and turner contained. if we can do that, this should be a win.

Lets get us a WIN tonight.

Sure hope Dray plays better than e.g. Glen Davis career level — oh wait, that’ll be easy.

Sure hope he plays to *his* best level (much better than any game Davis has ever had as a pro), and we win.

Hope John Wall is ready to start.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 23, 2010 at 10:43 AM

For those of you wondering how John Wall has fared so far in 8 NBA games, the answer is very well indeed.

The 2 notable concerns about him were turnovers and shooting. In college, he averaged about 2.2 more turnovers than steals. So far in the NBA, he’s improved that to only 1 more turnovers than steals. Is that great? No. But it’s acceptable.

He is shooting .439, and .368 on three point attempts. Better than this Summer but not good enough yet.

Overall, statistically he is already about the 15th best point guard in the league. Even if you don’t believe in statistics, it’s still better to have better numbers than worse numbers, right?

Of course it’s only 8 games, and you can read that either as very quick progress or not enough minutes to be meaningful. Still… so far pretty good.

Comment from reddog271
Time November 23, 2010 at 10:48 AM

Thanks Tom. I’m not too worried about his shooting as along as he gets to the line and cuts down the turnovers like you said. We have shooters… we need him to run the team. His D has been really good too. Is he still first in steals?

“Is it only me seeing it? Am I wrong and Gabbo is right? How is it every other Big in the NBA can set a high screen and still get back to the paint to guard their man…”GrifonRacing

This certainly goes a very long way toward explaining why we have so many differing opinions on the blog. Some of us haven’t the foggiest idea what we are talking about: Players set screens on offense; players guard their man on defense. AGGHHHH! I think I’ll just read the blog going forward.

Comment from crozby
Time November 23, 2010 at 11:20 AM

We already have shooters out on the perimeter. We have players called John Wall, Gilbert Arenas, Kirk Hinrich, Al Thornton, and Nick Young. Those players can even set screens for each other. When Dray plays out on the perimeter, like he does, he does not get back quickly enough for much needed put backs that he could very well be getting. And oh, putbacks usually increase your shooting percentage as well. That’s why Glen Davis shoots a higher percentage than Dray. Again, we don’t need Dray out there, and Flip Saunders has said that himself.

Comment from HardCoreFan
Time November 23, 2010 at 11:25 AM

Did you know…..

Wall is NBA’s # 1 in steals and # 3 in assists
McGee is # 2 in blocks and # 4 in FG %
In Sunday’s game Arenas got top assists and McGee got top rebounds and was # 1 on the Top 10 plays of the night. Just wanted to share some feel good stats!

Looking forward to the game tonight and looking for a win!

This is a very dangerous game to me. Philly is kinda like us in that they havent had all there pieces totally on deck with the right lineup they wanted all year. This game will be one of the only few they have and the other one’s were against great teams on the road. They will start Holliday, Turner, Iggy, Brand, & Hawes while coming off the bench with Williams, Nocioni, Young, & Speights. There is real talent there.

There problem is that alot of those guys are just alike and hardly any of them are good shooters. I wouldnt be shocked if we played a ton of Zone this game until Philly shows they can knock down some jumpers. Maybe go man to man but if they make some then stay in the zone. Again, I would feel much better if we started the Wall-Gil backcourt. Philly doesnt have the shooters but they have a ton of streaky guys who on the right night can go off and we are still trying to find ourselves through injuries, lineups, and rotations. Could be a blowout or it could be a super tight game where guys dont totally mesh and we look like crap in stretches

Comment from Tom Mandel

crozby in fantasyland again: “That’s why Glen Davis shoots a higher percentage than Dray.” And “putbacks… that’s why.”

Glen Davis is a horrible shooter over his career. And he’s a jump shooter not a putback guy. Doesn’t get many of those at all.

Ignorant.

Comment from Tom Mandel

@ gotabig — I noticed the gaffe too, but I couldn’t bring myself to comment on it.

What we need to do to win tonight (and win a few more games thenceforth): sit down Al Thornton and let Nick and Cartier share the minutes at the 3.

I’ve been critical of both those guys, but they are playing better than they ever have, and *much* better than Thornton.

Yes, we’ll lose some rebounding, that’s the bad part. But Thornton has turned the ball over a lot (like a negative rebound if you see what I mean), and both Nick and Cartier are shooting well enough to make up the difference easily in this case. Martin is also getting steals (gives you the ball — like a rebound).

I think crozby suggested starting Martin at one point, and I criticized the idea. I was wrong.

Comment from gray16
Time November 23, 2010 at 12:13 PM

crozby, dray is creating his own shots, getting his own offense, that’s why he’s shooting lower than davis. davis is getting all his shots created for him, he’s getting wide open shots fed to him. with rondo, allen, pierce, garnett, and others playing on the floor with him, they will let davis get open jumpers all day over any of the other guys getting to the rim. davis has been making those jumpers (that he wasn’t making last season). that’s why his percentage is so high right now.

davis shot 43% last season. you can say stop living in the past all you want, but don’t be surprised when his percentage drops this season as time goes on. and if davis had to create offense for himself…

Comment from gray16

I just wanted to chime in on the” Dray vs. Bib Baby” debate.
I agree with Tom (than sounds strange!)& gray16. I’d rather have (a healthy) Dray than Big Baby. But Big Baby’s definitely not a “bum” , he‘s hit some big shots for Boston. I just think Dray gives you more all around play on more of a consistent basis than Big Baby would. In Boston BB’s not asked to carry the load that Dray has too. Plus Dray is 7ft tall and can also play the Center position and BB has the girth but is short compared to most PF’s. Neither guy can jump at this point but i guess with Dray’s length he’d be more affective at getting his shoot off & on Defense altering shots and rebounding. And as far as toughness goes BB CRIED ON THE SIDELINES!!! There no crying in basketball.

looking at the schedule before the season started, i thought we would be at .500 best case or 5-7 if we didnt play well. I am 2 games off so far for the .500 prediction and one game off for 5-7. As javale continues to improve, i think we will get to .500 on Dec. 31 against the Pacers. we play MIA twice during that stretch and i think we will win one of those games probably the second one since we should have Howard back by then. and think if Javale and Dray have good games we will beat the Bulls dec. 22nd. lets see how my predictions turn out.

But 1st thing 1st. lets get a win tonight!

Thanks for the stats Tom and HardCoreFan.

On second thought, Tom, I guess the odds are that Hinrich will be gone after this year. He’ll be excellent trade bait and we should be able to get a draft pick out of such a deal. Given that we need some glue to keep the kids together, it would make more sense to resign Howard and trade Hinrich since Howard has no trade value.

Comment from gray16

as for dray taking a charge, he does do that. last season he took 28 charges, 19 more than the league average. this season he has only taken one, which is the same as the league average. in the end, he does take charges, although i do think he is a little wary about now due to injuries.

We played smart 3and 3/4 quarters then we started to play stupid. What are you saying Dre, well Gil distributed fabulously and kept the turnovers down and we looked great right up to 4 minutes left in the 4th quarters. Then Gil fell head over hills with the 3 pointers that he wasn’t making and that when the coach should have told him to go to the HOLE and make then foul you or give to the Javale for a dunk! The time out was not called and the mediocrity continued and of course the losing continued! We should have won that game but the missed 3′s killed our momentum and everyone seemed to have lost interest when we went into overtime because Richard Hamilton just took off offensively and he destroyed us! Bottom line is we are not good defensively and thats why we can’t win on the road! So what are we going to do to make this thing better! Bloggers Im open for opinions!

crozby — “I guess you’ll give me an answer then someday as to why Glen Davis is shooting 51% and Dray 42%. I’ll wait on that one. And, I’ll leave it at that about Davis.”

No problem; I can give you an answer on that one. It’s early days, not a large sample for this-season statistics, and his shots have gone in! :) Only thing is, ooops, he’s down to .491 after game 14.

Last year, Glen grabbed 8.75 boards per 40 minutes. This year he is down to 6.66. Do you want to use those rebounding numbers to assess him? Along w/ the shooting numbers from this year? Given that you said the past doesn’t matter?

Obviously not. To understand Glen Davis, or any player, you have to look at what he’s done over his career and what he’s doing these days — *in enough minutes to make analysis stable.*

There’s a concept in statistics called “regression to the mean.” Essentially it means that if things have been different from an established pattern recently, then the most likely thing to happen is that the next events will bring them closer to the mean. By the end of the year, it’s most likely (of course not written in stone!) that Glen will have season shooting and rebounding numbers more or less
like what they’ve been in the past — not just Glen, obviously. Most guys.

Look, Big Baby is not even close to Dray far as skill goes. The only reason Dray is rusty is because he was hurt all summer, remember? That’s a TERRIBLE comparison. Anyway hopefully Wall plays tonight, Gil continues to play good, Dray is consistant all game, McGee plays like he did Sunday, Thorton is ok, and we get this win tonight.

Comment from dlts20

Im definitely fine with Wall coming off the bench. He missed a few games and could come off the bench for atleast 1 game like Gil did. Also, Wall is probably the guy hurt the least by coming off the bench. You can tell his game & attitude would not be effected at all. He comes in and immediatly speeds up the tempo. Im not with it being long term but for a game or a few games is fine, atleast until Kirk sucks…lol

Comment from draftazoid

If Wall comes off the bench then I want Javale, Booker, Gee and Martin on the floor at the same time.

We end up scoring like 13pts in the 1st quarter and trailing by 15 or more. Typical Wiz crap. Hoped it doesnt happen. Then We come back behind Wall but its still a crappy game. zoid, what are you even talking about? 1st off AJ didnt like it and he doesnt like it now. He liked it much better in as a starter like he was before he got there and after he left. AJ isnt far from being a bench player anyways with all his terrible D, meaningless points, and black hole offense.

Im not talking about feelings when Im talking about Gil. Im talking about mentally & style of play. Gil is a rythm & timing type player. His game is effected when coming off the bench. Wall is the same guy all day, every day. The bench role doesnt change his style of play and he’s not a shooter so he doesnt have to worry about it throwing his shot off. Gil also hasnt hardly played in 4 years. He needs to start & get minutes for confidence.

Chicago doesnt miss him at all like you say. Sure they liked him but part of the reason he’s gone is because he’s not as good at the 2 as he is at the 1 and his shot was terribly inconsistent. Kirk has even said already that he has great chemistry with Wall out because he has the ball in his hands more and Gil demands alot of attention & can stretch the D.

I still dont get your point though. The best 2 guys are Gil & Wall and they should be the starting group. The next best group is clearly Kirk & Gil. Wall & Kirk are a distant 3rd and that should not be the lineup in no way

Comment from gray16

liking this lineup right now, hinrich doing well

Comment from gray16
Time November 23, 2010 at 8:53 PM

oh and i’d like to see more postups by booker, he can use his power in there, and even get double like that one possession, so let’s take advantage of that

does he not trust blatche that much that he won’t place him on brand or what?

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 23, 2010 at 9:12 PM

we could use gee’s savvy at the three, that’s for sure…booker at the four and javale at the five….let gil run the team for the first five minutes and see how it goes….at the two, put NY there.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 23, 2010 at 9:13 PM

lol…ab isn’t going to play d like mcgee. brand is the offensive threat on their team, but at this point, anything is worth a try.

Comment from gray16

lol, mcgee is leading the team in minutes played this game… when’s the last time you could say that?

Comment from dcbutler357

as well he should, he’s about the only one producing on a regular basis.

Comment from gray16
Time November 23, 2010 at 9:19 PM

if we can find a solution for elton brand, we can definitely make a comeback.

we have to box him out, and make him put the ball on the floor, not letting him get jump shots. make him switch his game up and see if he can continue hitting at such a high percentage.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 23, 2010 at 9:21 PM

I usually dont cringe on Dray’s jumpers. I cringe on everything else he does right now. However, Wall has hit him off the pick & roll like 15 times tonight and he hasnt shot that J once, atleast not since early on. Then he just shot one & made it. He keeps hesitating tonight like he has no confidence.

On a side note, how does McGee keep losing all these jump balls? He lost them last game too

No question now, Tom. McGee is our best player so far.

Well, at first it looked like Yi was going to be our breakout player, then it looked like Thornton. Now it looks like Young is the guy.

Blatche should NEVER EVER run a high post screen again. When he does, he’s left wide open for an 18 foot jumper – which he will take 9/10 times.

It’s great when he makes them. It’s terrible when he doesn’t.

If the coach doesn’t put Blatche in position to take long range jumpshots, then he won’t.

Onto the game: Elton Brand was the key for both Philly collapses. The first game was because he fouled out and Philly relied too much Lou Williams to bail them out. Tonight’s game was because of a stupid foul on JaVale. It wasn’t malicious, but it was so unnecessary because JM was defenseless.

Not only is John Wall a better basketball player than Evan Turner. He is CLUTCH:

1. If Evan Turner makes one of 2 free throws Wizards lose. He misses both.
2. If John Wall misses any of the 3 free throws then the Wizards Lose. He makes all three. Nothin but net.

McGee had one of the best games I’ve seen by a Wizard in many years. What a jump that kid has made in his production this season. He keeps playing like he has the last week or so, and he should get Most Improved Player.

You can’t say enough about John Wall. What a gutty performance.

It was great to see how *competitive* Nick was every minute tonight. So great that he got the game-winner. He even had an assist tonight — might have been his first of the season! :)

Dray couldn’t get the ball in the bucket. That happens, but he was solid in every other way. He got 12 boards.

Neither Hinrich nor Arenas contributed tonight. It’s kind of funny the way guys are praising Gilbert but dinging Hinrich. Right now Kirk is our third best player.

Must have been a very very happy locker room after a win like that!

Worth mentioning solid performances by Booker (I’ll say!) and Armstrong.

@ dcbutler

what you said isn’t technically true. if mcgee set a high post screen, do you think he’ll take an 18 foot jumper 9/10 times like blatche would if mcgee was open?

the thing is – blatche is pretty open when he sets those screens and isn’t the object of offensive basketball is to shoot when you have an open shot? if he drives the lane, he won’t get a more open shot – he may get fouled or he may get a turnover. and blatche is a pretty decent shooter for being 6-11 or whatever he is. he does exhibit good form and technique and i think he knows that – which is why he continues to want to be more like dirk than moses malone.

fast forward rewind back to the game where blatche got into the post multiple times (oh wait, it was against the 76ers the first time as a matter of fact) and he went right at brand. didn’t blatche make like 10 of 13 free throws in that game and still got his requisite 22 points? who was the one calling the plays to make him get to the post? it was ol’ ball coach.

the point of my original post is not to blame flip or blatche but to correct the situation by not putting the player in a position where he’ll take ill advised shots.

Comment from bullets_fusion
Time November 24, 2010 at 1:20 AM

@ dayle

last 30 games of last season, flip ran the offense through blatche from the low post wing area. the ball was dumped to him and blatche was the ultimate decision maker. since his teammates sucked, he took it more upon himself to score 25 ppg.

this season, the team is back to what a normal one should be run – which is from a point guard. blatche is no longer the primary option for EVERY play.

the only analogy i can come up with is doing homework by yourself or doing homework as a group project. when you’re the only one, you control the schedule, the effort, etc. when you’re in a group, you have to work as a team.

Comment from dcbutler357

I warned of the delusion with AB, just like the year that Juwan Howard got the big contract. the rest of the team was so bad, it made him look good. He still wasn’t that good then, but he looked better than the rest (for the most part).

anyhoot, moving on:

It seems that all of the players on the USA team have excelled this year, thus far, whether we want to give the program credit or not.

Derrick Rose is a beast. He is strong and very versatile and has acquired a jumper.

Noah is a beast. I think Javale can take him now.

@ dcbutler

i think your last post said it all – you are a stubborn basketball fan because you only want things to be done ONE WAY and only one way.

flip doesn’t run a hardline pick-n-roll like jerry sloan does. flip has guys doing dart-ins/dart-outs and motion curls immediately after the high post screen. what i’m saying is that flip’s offense is more complex because it is UNPREDICTABLE. the greatness of sloan’s p-n-r is that even though everyone knew it is coming, the opponents still had trouble defending it. i’m sure you’ve heard this phrase talked about so many times during broadcasts as a tribute/respect to jerry sloan as a coach to teaching that basketball idea.

just because 2 hall-of-famers run the p-n-r to perfection doesn’t mean wall-hinrich-arenas/blatche can do the same EVER in their careers. blatche can dart to the basket all day and still yield the same conclusion as he would missing a long jumper.

for my 2 cents, i’d rather have an offense that’s unpredictable because it will keep the defense on their heels. on plays where blatche makes those 18 footer j’s, do you think his defender actually knew blatche was going to take that shot? of course not since blatche is pretty open on those plays (as mentioned in my earlier posts).

now, your latest complaint with blatche’s basketball iq and, i guess, his inefficiency with shot selection are warranted. certainly, blatche has only himself to blame on games where he keeps taking jumper after jumper and the iron’s unkind. but there are games where he’s like 6/11 or 9/16 — and those are solid shooting games for him in my opinion.

my only real complaint with blatche is i want to see him mix it up more. he shouldn’t solely rely on 80% long jumpers and 20% post play and vice versa.

Comment from bullets_fusion

I need clarification on what you mean when you apparently warned “us” like Moses (the tablet carrying-one, not malone) of the delusion with AB’s game.

Better yet, you should explain what you REALLY thoughts of AB before this hindsight is 20/20 B.S. since now you’ve seen more and has more knowledge.

If you thought he was KG jr, then you’re the one that is delusional. If you thought he was scrubby mckwamebrown, then that’s not right either.

I haven’t looked at the stats, but AB was like a 7ppg/4rpg bench guy that basically doubled those stat categories as a starter? That sounds about right to me.

Comment from bullets_fusion
Time November 24, 2010 at 1:49 AM

It was actually Kenny “the Jet” Smith that told 106.7 The Fan of the delusion with Blatche well before you started blogging the same sentiments here.

Kenny was asked by the guys what he thought of AB’s breakout. Kenny said Blatche is “a looter in a riot” and nothing more. Kenny also mentioned seeing Blatche before he was drafted with him not being able to play professionally.

I’m pretty sure Kenny, since he’s played professionally and has analyzed a lot of basketball since his retirement, is a solid evaluator. And I think Blatche’s ultimate pay raise is about right to what he actually brings to the table.

thank you for elevating me to the status of Moses, I guess you realize when you are dealing with a greater mind…lol….smdh

Thank you for acknowledging my point of how two basketball players eventually became hall of famers using basic basketball to achieve success as an asset. A pick doesn’t require you to take a jumper, but since AB’s IQ hasn’t figured that out yet, he takes a jumper. He can also PICK AND ROLL to the basket or something else…

In regards to Kenny the Jet Smith, I was saying and thinking the same thing prior to him saying that….Oh ye of lil faith, you don’t have to be a player to understand the game, or even figure out what an individual need/should do, to play the game effectively.

NOW, since you have elevated me to the status of Moses, I have USEFUL work to perform, than to keep trying to show a blindman how to see ;-)

Very exciting game tonight :!: Great games from almost everyone.

Gabbo I have to apologize in advance LOL. I baited you just a little and got you to bite along with your buddy Tom. I knew you would bite on the basketball symantics and smokescreen the point being made. It has been your tactic so far to date when folks don’t agree with you. It’s ok… kinda gave me a chuckle. I have to get some fun where I can these days :) I really shouldn’t do that… but you intellectuals are so easy some times :) I DO really like the old Batman adjectives too. ARRGH is one of my personal favorites LOL.

Tom I really got you….. “Gabbo I saw the gaffe too but decided not to mention it…. well bud… you just did ;) Got you both.

The point being made was a valid one and one that has been made by smarter people than me…. Love the smokescreen though… actually expected it. The bonus was when Tom bit as well LOL.

Go JaVale, Andray, Nick, and Mr. Wall, JaVale was exceptional for the second game in a row. We really have some hope for the future with the young guys playing so well. Booker is a keeper in every sense of the word. This season is all about fun :)

I watched the game, watched Brand’s foul, and watched the multiple replays. The call was correct, but Brand didn’t do anything intentional to hurt JaVale.

He pushed *out* with his arms. JaVale is just incredibly quick and was in the air when the shove came. It happened to catch him in a way that sent him horizontal, but the intention was only to move him away from the bucket and disrupt his shot — certainly knowing it would be a foul call.

Not worth worrying about and not something that should stick w/ Brand. I did think it was hilarious the way JaVale waved “bye bye” to Brand w/ his fingertips and then rolled around on the floor laughing — Buck and Phil thought he might be in pain at first, but it was pretty obvious that he was laughing.

dcbutler, et. al. — *why* are you spending energy dinging Andray after a great win like that? He didn’t play great last night, but he didn’t play terrible either. He played ok.

He didn’t shoot well, but he grabbed 12 boards, he only turned it over once, and he had 3 assists to go along w/ only 3 fouls in 43 minutes.

I also don’t see what’s wrong w/ him taking an open foul-line jumper. It’s a standard pro shot, and he makes them pretty consistently.

Dray is an exceptionally skilled, finesse big man who is troubled by inconsistency. But there has been progress, even this year. I don’t see any *emotional* inconsistency for example. He seems quite focused and professional. Of course I’d like to see better *results* but lets let the minutes accumulate a little before coming to any conclusions.

“Looter in a riot” is a colorful phrase. I assume it refers to the fact that Dray’s opportunities came when the previous order of the team broke down totally and everyone was shipped out of town. But it’s a little harsh, don’t you think?

@ Gilbertology — can you ever see Gilbert playing badly, man? You point out 17 pts and 7 assists. Points *don’t matter* if you shoot a low % to get them. And you fail to note the 8 turnovers.

My point isn’t to criticize Gilbert. Everyone has off nights. Nor am I expecting him to return to the player of 4 years ago — that is unrealistic. My point was that I don’t see why Hinrich gets so much criticism here when in fact he is playing very well (not last night, obviously, but overall).

I’m *very impressed* with the progress this team is making. If you had told me before the season that we’d be 5-8 at this point I’d have thought you were dreaming.

The big factors in our progress are pretty obvious: JaVale is a much improved player, and John Wall has taken hold very well and very quickly.

Ernie’s trade to acquire Hinrich for nothing is looking better and better every day.

If Al stays injured, Yi doesn’t come back, and Josh Howard takes forever to recover, we could keep making this kind of progress based on our young guys! :)

@ dcbutler — I’ve been meaning to write this: Trevor Booker has played more minutes than any rookie drafted after him except Landry Fields (who was an enormous surprise obviously). I’m pretty sure he’s playing more minutes than most of the guys taken before him too!

The three players I’d have considered other than Trevor at #23 were Damion James, Quincy Pondexter and Dominique Jones. None of them have earned much time or looked particularly good while on the floor.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 24, 2010 at 9:09 AM

Who are the rookie surprises this year?

Obviously, Fields is the big one — right now he’s the most productive player on the Knicks!

Eric Bledsoe, who got very little floor time his one year in college, playing behind John, seemed like he’d be way too raw to contribute as a rookie. But he’s played 428 minutes already and at a pretty good level (i.e. for a rookie).

Also on the Clippers, Willie Warren (taken #54) has looked pretty good — in very limited minutes however.

Of the top picks, the one thought to be the biggest “project” — Derrick Favors — is getting minutes and playing very well. Turner is playing well too, as is Aminu.

Cousins and Wes Johnson aren’t playing very well.

Everyone else, straight down to Booker, is either injured or doing absolutely nothing.

Comment from Tom Mandel

My point? Leaving aside Landry Fields, whom *no one* thought would play the way he has, I can’t find anyone available when we picked Booker (or Seraphin for that matter) that I’d rather have based on what they’ve done so far.

Jeremy Lin, undrafted, has gotten few minutes for GS, but he’s played reasonably well for a rookie.

That’s it.

Thoughts:

Great game, but defense has to greatly improve. We played very poorly on defense, especially in the first half. If Brand had not gotten put out of the game, it may have been a different story. The next three games are going to be very tough and we really need to concentrate on defense much more.

Also, I am very disappointed in Arenas and Hinrich for their play last night. Those two guys are great shooters, but did not shoot to potential last night (both only 37%). They also made bad decisions on handling the ball. Hinrich (especially) dribbles too much all around the floor to often end up with nothing. He also does not take open shots when he has them. And, he seems to be losing his man more and more lately. I watched the Lakers game last night afterwards and observed Shannon Brown guard his man in their game. He was very fast and stuck his man like glue. I only wish Hinrich could do the same and could contest shots better.

Gilbert is slower, of course, and therefore has more problems getting to the basket. Well then, he has to shoot better from outside to get back to where he was.

Dray’s defense continues to be bad. Elton Brand shot 57% on him and scored 19 points in only 26 minutes (yes, only 26 minutes), before getting kicked out of the game (a saving grace). To add, Dray played 17 more minutes (43 total minutes) than Brand, but had less points (17), and only shot 38%.

Again, if Dray would get to the basket more, he would get the low-post opponents in more foul trouble and shoot a higher percentage. Getting low-post opponents in foul trouble then often opens up the door more for our guards to drive to the basket. All-in-all, this amounts to higher percentage shots for the entire team. Dray would also get more much needed offensive rebounds, instead of being out on the perimeter, which would translate into more inside points.

Wall played great (first half shot was off), Nick Young was solid (both offensively and defensively), and Javale played like Superman.

Since Nick’s shot is consistent, he should now be starting. I also think that the team probably feels the same way.

what a game!!!! Reminds me of the homeopener I went to with the same excitement =)

J Wall “cool as a cucumber” on the freethrows.

My boy Nick The Kid Young is playing well. We gotta reward this guy. He is also playing good defense this year. He has back to back steals in the fourth. Happy that he hit that game winning three. He’s a good kid and deserves it.

Javale is starting to be a monster. I hope he continues to play this way especially when I go to this Saturday’s game against the Dwight Howard and the Magics.

We need to stay away from that zone D especially with the three guards. Or just stay away from the three guards. I may be biased but put in Alonzo GEEEEEEEEEE for Hinrich.

Lets enjoy this victory fellow Wiz fans.

I don’t agree that Young should start over Gil for more than one reason. First, benching Arenas would kill any small hope EG has for trading him. Second, things are working well as they are. Anytime you promote someone over another, the chemistry changes a little. I don’t think it should be done unless there is a BIG difference in play. Flip can play both about the same number of minutes w/o demoting anyone.

Great Game last night for the players. Terrible game for the coach. Until we get a new coach or the one we have learns a little bit about his team, the wins we do get will be close ones like this..

Its not that Kirk is playing bad, Its that Nick is playing so much better! Flip must really have something personal against Nick. He has been playing very well and consistent but cant break the starting lineup. and is actually falling further behind in Flops book. now he is bringing Martin in the game b4 Nick. not that Martin is playing bad either, but like i said, Nick is just playing so much better. Any other coach out there understands the concept of playing the players who give you the best chance to win. Flip wants to play players he likes and hopes they can win. BAD COACHING! i cant say it enough. luckily for us Nick is making the most of the time he IS being played so we can pull out wins like this.

Dray is not putting forth much effort out there on offense. He is very capable and he can actually jump a little bit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6q7FMWvg4s&feature=related

but he spent too much time with AJ in my opinion. i dont know why he doesnt do these types of plays more, but im sure that will improve his fg%, make opposing players have being posterized lingering in the back of their minds while defending him, and get fans to not hate him. might even get him in the all-star game. but until he starts using his ability, he will only be a 7th man of the year award candidate. yes i meant 7th man.

But now that I have this new “Hinrich” smiley, I’m cool 8) .

I gave you the Booker PT info not to be critical but because I agree that he should get minutes, and I thought it was interesting that rookies so far aren’t being all that productive. Wasn’t trying to prove something on you, so I didn’t bother w/ actual minutes.

@ crozby — I agree that we could easily start Nick over Al at the 3 (and also agree not to start him at the 2). But to be fair, we *would* lose some rebounding.

You could also argue that w need some scoring punch off the bench. There’s only one basketball, and it might be better to have a scorer like Nick in as a 6th man, given that Dray, John and Gil are going to take a lot of shots.

I also think PT is probably more important than starting. Combined, JohnKirkGil played almost 113 minutes. Nick played 32 minutes — so obviously he was at the 3 predominantly.

One place I disagree: even tho Nick has improved and yes he’s shooting well, he’s not playing as well as Kirk *overall.*

Andray Blatche for all that you do for our Wizards Team:
The stats speak for themselves and I feel the league has done you a mess service by not having you on the ALL-Star
Ballot: The stats after 13 hard fought games:

Rank: Totals
Scoring: 1 : 217points
Rebounding 2 : 104 2nd to Mcgee
Blocks 3 : 6 Mcgee & Yi Jianlian have more
Steals 2 : 16 2nd to Wall
Minutes 1 : 455
Freethrows 2 : .841% 2nd to Kirk Hinrich

The minutes are very impressive to me because he has been blessed with endurance and no injurys! The rebounding and scoring are coming along quite nicely also!

ON WHO STARTS:

This is Professional Sports.
You play who will give you the best chance to win the game.
You also play who needs to be developed.

If Nick Young is your best 2 guard then that’s who you play and that’s who you should start unless the Coach thinks that he will help the team better coming off the bench.

The Coach’s duty is to play the best and to develop the best.

Feelings and “we need to play him so that we can trade him” are cancers to a professional team.

Nick is not playing as well as Kirk.. He’s playing BETTER than Kirk. offense, defense, everything! he is playing better than Kirk and should not be coming off the bench for him. now that Gil and Wall are back, Nick should start at the 3. that gives Wall two 3point shooters on either side when he penetrates. When Howard comes back, he should have to TAKE the starting 3 spot from Nick by outplaying him, not by having a jersey that says Howard on the back.

When the wiz had NY, Gil, and JWall in the game whipping the ball around the perimeter (ab and jm down low) and NY taking the open jumpers, it was pure beauty, then blatche came along shooting an 18 footer messing up the flow.

This isn’t to go hard at ab, just to say, all the dribbling is un-necessary. big men, know your roles and let’s play like this is supposed to be played. that 14 point run was da bomb, and should have been continued….while they were shooting jumpers, javale was taking over the boards, pure beauty…..not a whole lot of dribbling, just running a set that worked…

Gil & Dray

Dray has to start playing with more intensity & hustling more. I still cut him a break due to the injury because everyone is just going to be faster than you at the start but he can still hustle alot more then he does. I think he would really benefit from a Wall-Gil backcourt and us running more.

Gil has to do something about those layups. Again, for him to jump so high on defensive rebounds but be so timid at finishing has to be somewhat mental. Also, sometimes he’s nearly wide open. You can be a 14yo who cant jump at all and make a wide open layup. He still is doing that stuff that he did last year in that he’s trying to draw the foul 1st & make the layup 2nd. That worked in his prime but he’s not athletic enough for that now. Just try to make the layup. I think he probably doesnt even practice it. Most pros dont practice that kinda stuff but he should start just running full speed from the FT line & raising up high for layups. Then get someone to slightly defend the rim while he does it. Thats the only way to simulate it. Regular layup drills or shooting jumpers isnt going to do it. He has to get that confidence back because its so deflating when he does that

At this point, we need all the points and defense we can get (every night- the earlier, the better). And seeing that we are playing a lot of these games very close, we need to get off to a good start in every game to keep the guys’ heads into playing hard (especially on defense). I would rather have Nick start, to help possibly give us an early lead, rather than playing catch-up and going into overtime. If Nick is given most of the playing minutes, this could possibly add an additional (and much needed) 5-10 points to his average and the team’s final tally in games. If I were Flip, I would hate to realize that Nick could have given us the extra points needed to win a game, but instead I had him sitting on the bench.

Lastly, Tom, I am not comparing Nick to Kirk. Kirk is to back up Wall and Arenas at the 1 & 2. Nick plays the 3. The starting lineup (until Howard returns) should be:

1. Wall
2. Arenas
3. NY
4. Blatche
5. McGee

Again, Kirk should back up the 1 & 2, and Thornton should back up NY at the 3. It’s simple.

And btw, Nick and Kirk are both currently shooting 48% from the field. However, Nick is shooting a higher percentage from the 3-point range (Nick 36%, Kirk 35%). Mute point since I want Nick at the 3.

I think its great that we all find time to stop doing whatever we are supposed to be doing at work to discuss/debate Wizards basketball throughout the day. That is what i like to call dedication! if we could transfer our dedication over to some of the players, we would be true contenders! I think Dray is doing OK. he is not playing well, but if you take him for what he is (a second round pick) he is doing fine. he is doing everything i could ever ask for from a 2nd round pick. My problem with dray is that he seems content with playing at that 2nd round level instead of wanting to elevate his level of play. we could potential have the two best 2nd rounders in the league (Gil & Blatche) but Blatche needs to DEDICATE to becoming that player. Playing lazy, hoping your post moves/baseline moves/jump shot, will get you there is false hope. you have to bring the house down! thats my challenge for dray. can someone relay the message? DRAY, bring the house down!

Progress came when Arenas started playing…If Arenas is traded my contentions are that the Wizards will continue to rebuild since that 1979 season with Webber, Howard, and Arenas starts that ended too soon.

Nick Young is not a Small Forward.
We have to be realistic.
Play Trevor Booker at the 3. Let him develop at the same time helping the team. He is a very smart player with a high ceiling. You want to talk about IQ. Trevor has IT!

If Nick Young is better, right now, than Gilbert and Hinrich at the Big Guard then play him more.
I don’t think Flip has the GUTS to start Nick Young.
So we won’t have to worry about that.

But Flip should at least have the guts to play the players that will give us the best chance to win.

Question for Flip:
Where was Nick Young in the 4th quarter? Why did he only show up at the last minute of the quarter after outplaying any of our other guards besides Wall?
This is where FEELINGS towards veterans screws up with Coaches and Fans minds.

Heck, Nick and Gil had more blocked shots than Dray did last night (Gil 2, Nick 1, Blatche 0). And for the season, Gil and Armstrong are averaging more blocks than Dray.

2010 Season (Blocks Per Game):

Javale McGee- 2.92
Gilbert Arenas- .70
Hilton Armstrong- .62
Andray Blatche- .46

What’s wrong with this picture???

And why is Dray averaging 3.0 turnovers per game when McGee (who handles the ball just as much) is only averaging 1.54?

In the NFL there is no tolerance for not playing the BEST at each position.

GM’s are constantly looking for players who will beat out the veterans. They are told if you out play him then you will play.

It does not matter if you are a 10 time All Star. If a low drafted or undrafted player comes to camp and plays better than the veteran, GUESS WHO PLAYS?
The better player.
Ask Ozzie Newsome with the Ravens how he gets to keep his job.

Gil is a two time All-Star and all he has to do is be more unpredictable in his shot selection and make his teammates around him better by assisting the ball. I can see 25points and 12 assists with 2 turnovers and the case is closed. Nick will never pass the ball because his forte is shooting the three only!Nick can’t even spell assist so he is one dimensional and thats it! Kirk Hinrich should be on the bench with he and Young being leaders of the second unit.

Blatche is not playing that bad. He seems to be getting his legs back at times and loosing them at other times. He is coming off an injury. So factor it in. Once he learns his role he’ll be okay. Don’t believe he is an allstar.

Jeffmalone1990, I am not a fan of blaming coaches unless I see something that a coach “did” to prevent his team from winning. I don’t believe in 2nd guessing after the play is over. Also, he seems to be figuring out how his players respond in different situations.

Why not? If Nick Young gives you the best chance to win then why shouldn’t he start?

Funny how Nick Young was on the floor at the end of regulation and overtime.

@tyrone2000-Jeffmalone1990, I am not a fan of blaming coaches unless I see something that a coach “did” to prevent his team from winning. I don’t believe in 2nd guessing after the play is over. Also, he seems to be figuring out how his players respond in different situations.

So when is the coach to blame? When do you take a look at the coach and the philosophy of the staff? I look at the entire team, and Flip is still an issue for me…Starting with the Zone Defense, and defensive rebounding by just sending the 4 and 5 to the boards while the guards leak out and try and create a break situation. I do not agree with the 4 and 5 receiving the ball above the foul line as a set play..

draftzoid-Nick Young does not need to start, again if he is going well he will be on the floor to end the game and that is what matters. He is playing better defense so far this year and he is in a nice flow, let’s see again if he can maintain the same on the road, I for one hopes so……

At the beginning of the season, I was worried about the 3 position and the 5. Now, my worries are subsiding at the 5 and switching to the 4. In order for this team to get off the present level and move up the the next, we will need to change personnel. Both positions are up in the air at this point, but if Dray doesn’t improve throughout the season, there will be PFs out there like Glen Davis (Boston, averaging 10 ppg) and David West (New Orleans, averaging 18 ppg) looking to get paid, and are worth it. Zach Randolph (Memphis, averaging 17 ppg) will also be available, but don’t know what his pricetag will be.

Lastly, guys we need our best shooters/scorers on the floor at the 1, 2, and 3. That would be Wall, Gil, and Nick…period!

Get the 4 position figured out/up to par and NEVER play Heinrich/Wall/Gil together again ane we should be fine

Heinrich duties should only be to give wall a breather. We have NY/Gee to back up Gil or play the three.

Again, start Nick at the 3 for now. With Nick shooting so well, it doesn’t make sense to have a shorter team on the floor. Bigger 3′s (most 6’7″-6’8″) can easily shoot over Gil and Kirk (basically uncontested). We have to have more height at the 3.

I also think too many people on this blog concentrate on (and talk about) offense only. You have to remember that there are two ends of the court.

Well you know what I think about Glen Davis — that would be a downgrade. West isn’t very good either, and he’s certainly not the “force down low” that you want.

The ideal upgrade at the 4 would be Kevin Love of course. But I’m sure every GM in the league has the same idea. He’s an upgrade over pretty much anybody at this point.

Comment from Tom Mandel

The first problem with starting Nick is that there is only one basketball, and we *have* shooters on our starting 5. We *don’t* have shooters off the bench.

The other problem w/ starting Nick is rebounds — crozby, you talk about needing “as many points as possible” early in the game. Whether that’s true or not, I hope it’s obvious that you can’t get them w/o rebounds. If you only get the ball after the other team scores, it’s not possible to get a lead. (duh)

The two key factors in getting and keeping a win are net possessions (rebounds plus steals minus turnovers) and Field Goal %. Doing well on the first one gets you more shots. Doing well on the second one gets you more points per shot taken.

In particular if you dominate the defensive boards, you are putting *a lot* of pressure on the opponent’s FG%. They have to make a high % to be in the game at all.

JeffM,

at one time I was really down on Flip. And his love for Heinrich is still a concern and other choice/timely decisions. If it wasn’t for the injury to YI, we wouldn’t even see Booker.

However, Javale has turned the corner, NY has turned the corner (still underplayed) and each game Flip says “dre has to get his “butt” down on the block”. Dre has “chosen” to jump out and shoot the jumper once he sets picks. Flip should shorten the leash. each time he does it, with 7 or more seconds on the shot clock, yank him out of the game. Each time he just looks at the rebounding down low, and doesn’t move his feet to go help out dre take him out, each time dre rotates to go block a shot and dre just stands there looking take him out. His lack of iq/energy/effort makes the others work harder to win games. I blame flip now for letting him stay in.

Landry is one option, sacramento has thompson also, but landry is a proven asset that we may be able to get now. Landry will get 20 pts on 13 shots….dray 20 pts on 23 shots…..should be easy….

right now the weak links that I can see is letting heinrich stay in too long, not playing NY, knowing when to get Javale back in, AB not being a 4, getting this three position figure out (try booker at the three also)…imo

Young and McGee are in a nice flow and I would not tinkle with that at all, I actually think that Arenas is not aggressive enough as it relates to taking his shot. He is looking to pass first in my opinion and launch 3′s, however he is starting to drive more and as a fan that is a really good sign. John Wall, could really set the stage for McGee, Young and help Blatche w\ career years by keeping that assist number over 10 a game. I could live with 16pts and 10 assists a game, and be very happy with it. But he (Wall) is also getting better….

@ dcbutler — You use Hollinger’s PER rating? Do you understand how it works or how well it correlates with anything? Actually, it’s not bad — PER correlates with team wins at @ 81%.

Below I link to a more useful page that allows you to sort by PER or by the better metric ws40 — ws40 is an end-user calculable version of WP48. It correlates with team wins at a 94% rate.

By “correlate with team wins” I mean that if you adjust for position and minutes played, and then for each team you add up the statistical ratings, the teams are in order from best rating to worst rating that correlates to their order from most wins to least wins at a 94% rate.

Here’s the page: http://bit.ly/hm71M6

It lists power forwards (and some other forwards/centers mixed in who sometimes play the 4), including only those who have played 20 minutes a game or more. You can change that parameter if you like — or any of them.

I’ve left it in PER order. Dray is well down the page near the bottom. If you click on ws40 and re-order by that metric, which is somewhat more accurate imo, you’ll find he’s also well down the page near the bottom.

For a rough check on whether this is an accurate metric, simply look at the top of the list. There’ll be a few guys you don’t think should be there, but overall you find Pau Gasol, Kevin Love, Tim Duncan, KG, Millsap, etc. Obviously, it works reasonably well, as those are many of the obvious names.

Btw, if you change the position reported on to Center, you’ll find JaVale up near the top of the list — and that’s on his whole season stats so far. He seems just to be finding his groove recently, so he may continue zooming up the list! :)

Comment from Tom Mandel

Don’t get me wrong. Dray is not the worst PF in the league. I just think that we will not be able to get to the next level with him at PF if he keeps playing like he is. Our 2 guard (Gil) has more blocks this year than he does. And, we need a more powerful force (both mentally and physically) in the paint to help Javale. Apparently, Dray is not doing what Flip is asking him to do. Don’t know why, but something is wrong. Flip keeps expressing that. And last year, Flip was very fed up with the team’s defense. We will never be able to truely defend guys in the paint like Gasol, Bynum, Dwight Howard, Stoudemire, and others unless Dray plays better or we upgrade.
