Game Day Detroit(Auburn Hills)

8;45 AM EST Dave Johnson checking in….really liked the character of the team in finding a way to gut out a win over Memphis.Really enjoyed seeing Gilbert Arenas talk to the crowd after the game and flash a wide grin. I think the joy of the game is really come back and that Arenas appreciates the positive support of the crowd. Andray Blatche was also critical in the end of the Grizzlies win.  Blatche started strong, but then struggled from the field. Instead of fading at the end, he stayed aggressive and came up with big plays on offense and defense. Ran into Pistons assistant coach and former Bullets star Darrell Walker and he had a high prise for both John  Wall and the team….Wall is on the trip and we will update you on his status as soon as we can…looking forward to a god night on the BLOG after a busy football day.THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from the Palace  as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE    link at the top of the page. We start at 6:00 PM.

4:55 PM…dave and Glenn checking in from the Palace at Auburn Hills…John Wall and Yi going through warm-up…but thst does NOT mean they will play..

Flip found a way of keeping a hard working McGee in the game which was key to getting the win. Along with the switch of ABlatche on Gasol…NYoung is actually getting better on the offensive side of the ball. Armstrong has become a player I can support. He plays hard and smart…Looking for the Wizards to gain some confidence…

I hope everything is o.k. with Al Thornton. He’s playing hard but hasn’t been able to match the quality of his earlier performamces. Just hope he’s not trying to play through some minor injury and will make things worse by doing so. Hoping for a big game from him tonight!
Also hope Gil will continue where he left off!

Let’s get that second win in a row!

GOOOOOOOOO WIZARDS!!!

I said before last game that I think Gil will play good because he’s going against guys like Mayo, Young, & Greivas who he plays alot with in the Offseason when everyone says he is dominant. I feel the same exact way about this game. Bynum went to Arizona and plays alot with Gil in the Offseason. I remember when we played them last Preseason and Gil had like 24pts in the 1st half. I wouldnt be shocked to see him go off again.

The only problem is on defense. He is never ever going to want to guard and maybe never even play well against teams that have SG’s that run non stop off of screens. I thought we shouldve put Gil on Rondo and let Kirk chase Ray. I might feel the same this game. He’s going to be late chasing Rip off screens and its going to wear him down on Offense. However, I also feel better about Gil guarding Rondo than Stuckey for some reason, maybe because Stuckey is more of a scorer than Rondo. In this case I might rather have Gil guard Rip than Stuckey, or maybe just play alot of zone. Still, there is no way in hell that Rip can stay with him on the other end if he plays right.

Have you guys been watching Detroit? Maxiel is hurt and is short even when he’s healthy. With him out they start a short Ben Wallace at Center while starting Daye & Prince at the forward spots. I say that Flip should tell them to attack all day. No one settle for jumpers unless you are wide open. We can kill them in the paint if we play right. Still, I dont care what anyone says. Gil needs to start with Wall. It would be horrible to sit him down now after he started 3 games. You might mess a guy up like that. Put Kirk back in his natural role and let us have a killer 3 man backcourt. Putting Gil back on the bench now would slow down his process of getting back right. He’s fine now so leave him out there

Tom, I don’t think you could get a majority agreement that McGee has played best this year. I would vote for Arenas but I don’t think I could get majority agreement on him either, or anyone else. Individually, I think we’re looking pretty good at this point. The coaches just need to keep talking and the players need to keep listening.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 21, 2010 at 1:52 PM

When each player does their part we have success. Keep playing your role(s) and success will soon follow. sum as a whole is greater than the sum of an individual part.

BTW-I hope thornton is back, he was a force earlier in the season.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 21, 2010 at 2:06 PM

neal — I am not concerned about majority agreement. It’s obviously my view, not a request for a vote. But it is a review based on *facts*:

JaVale is shooting a higher FG % than ever. He is rebounding at a higher rate than ever. He is stealing at a higher rate than ever. He’s fouling at a lower rate than ever. He’s blocking shots at a higher rate than ever.

That’s called improvement. Playing better. As to the “do their part” stuff, if you miss a shot your team gets no points. If you don’t get the rebound, your team doesn’t get the ball, etc. *That* is what doing your part means.

As to Gilbert, so far this season he is shooting well below his usual %, getting to the line less than usual, assisting less than usual, etc. He is on his way back, but he’s not altogether back yet. He won’t be the player he was 4 years ago, no, but he’ll be better than he has been — tho yes we’ve seen flashes and even games at a very high level.

Dave and Glenn,

I just read where Flip is saying that John Wall has benefited from the 3 games off so he could watch Kirk Hinrich play.
Isn’t that the reason we traded for him from Chicago?
Because of what he did with Rose?

The key thing now is for Gil to stay out of foul trouble and not get worn down by guarding Rip. If he’s alright and doesnt pick up any fouls in the 3rd or just a late one then I would play Gil 20min in the 2nd half. He can do it and he’s feeling good tonight

I still say that I was right about Gil guarding Rip. I said he wouldnt want to chase him around those screens all night and it would eventually wear him down on both ends, espically from a scoring standpoint. If you saw him in the 2nd half he was breathing very hard. He shouldve guarded Stuckey tonight

Comment from getabigboyoffense

JaVale had a monster game. Perhaps the best of his young career.

Blatche and Thornton were the only Wizards who shot under 50% tonight. I thought that Andray went away during the 2nd and 3rd quarters. I might be able to make a case for his performance because of Flip’s guard-oriented offense, but, I won’t even try. I have no idea where his head was. He totally crashed. He came back to play in the 4th quarter and helped the Wiz ALMOST pull it out. Sorry, no CIGAR! You have to play 100% every minute you are in the game in the NBA.

Thornton should not be getting the minutes he is currently getting. Slick is playing way better than Al. Give Slick the majority of the minutes at the 3.

The Pistons are NOT a good team. This was a winnable game. However, for one of the few times, I don’t lay it all at Flip’s feet. The players simply didn’t perform well enough to get the “W”. They are young. Hopefully, they’ll learn from their mistakes.

Charlie V. must just about wet-his-pants whenever he is about to play the Wizards. He simply kills us. If he could play 82 games vs. the Wizards, he’d be a first ballot inductee to the Basketball Hall of Fame. I think that Eg should get him for the Wizards and just place him in retirement. It would be worth several wins every year.

Comment from ChenierFan

The blog is getting carried away with going after Andray. Charlie V. is a heckuva player who played lights out tonight.

That being said, the last play in regulation he should have given himself an 18 footer instead of a 23 footer. That was poor spacing.

I thought it was poor defense to keep letting Rip get to the spots he wanted. He just couldn’t miss. The Wiz were beaten by one man in the OT. Gill Just can’t get around picks very well – he should have overplayed him to that side.

I’m in favor of more mins for Carier instead of Al. I don’t think Al is making a lot of plays out there on either end of the court.

Comment from getabigboyoffense

I’m tired of seeing AB running around at the top of the key setting high screens for the guards. In that situation, if he receives a pass he is 25 feet fom the basket. Obviously, that is not his optimal position in which to have the ball. How about designing an offense that gets players the ball in their BEST position to be productive.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time November 21, 2010 at 10:51 PM

Question:

Does Andray run the offense as he is instructed to run it. That is, should he be outside setting high screens and, as a result, taking the outside shot rather than setting up in the low post? If the answer is NO, then Flop should sit his butt on the bench until he follows directions. However, if the answer is YES, Flop should be required to take a refresher course in Basic Offensive Techniques 101.

Charlie V is a less than average Power Forward.
14 points and 4 rebounds a game this year.

Defense is all about effort.
Whats up with that?

Comment from gray16

gabbo, if you set a high pick and roll towards the basket, you won’t be 25 feet from the basket.

as for developing a young team, i believe we are seeing improvement from nick and javale, dray needs to follow suit.

dray’s energy level just doesn’t seem to be very high right now, he doesn’t seem to be giving it all out there sometimes, especially when it comes to rebounding or defense. that’s on dray, not coach.

Comment from getabigboyoffense

@draftazoid – Charlie V. did not get 11 rebounds against our power forward (I know that you understand basketball so you know that, therefore why are you being such a jerk), he got a lot of those rebounds against Flop’s zone “D”. ‘Dray leads the Wizards in almost every stastical category (check the Wizards web site – Team Stats). He has improved in almost every category every year. I would call that “seeing improvement”.

We don’t need a 4 rebound a game Power Forward like Villanueva.
You should ask why does he blow up ONLY against the Wizards?

Sorry I am not buying he got it against Flips Defense.
Detroit specifically started Maxiel to beat up on Andray because the coach knew Andray would not want anything to do with the big tough horse.
Maxiel basically softened Andray for Villanueva who turned into an All Star for tonight.
Think about it. Villanueva for the past two years has only averaged 4 rebounds a game.

Comment from draftazoid
Time November 21, 2010 at 11:13 PM

The Bottom line is that if Andray sinks the 3 points shot at the buzzer then we are not having this discussion.

Funny how Villanueva just left Andray all by his lonesome for the last play. They wanted Andray to take that shot and the Wizards were suckers for falling for that play.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 21, 2010 at 11:14 PM

The first six minutes of the 2d half we had many opportunities to extend our lead, but our loose play didn’t allow us to do that. There was about a 3 minute stretch in there where we didn’t get even one good shot. Made the rest of the game tougher than it needed to be.

We won a game at home in overtime, and we lost one on the road in overtime — I wonder whether home teams win most overtime games?

As I said earlier today, JaVale is our best player right now. He’s turned a corner. He still has a ways to go, to be sure, but he’s at a different level of productivity from last year. Props to the young man.

Thornton contained Prince effectively; other than that, he didn’t do much for the good of the cause. Nick was effective tonight as a shooter (he has *really* improved his shot selection!), and mostly he played excellent defense. Otherwise… the usual: 1 board in 30+ minutes? Zero assists? Only 3 FT attempts? That doesn’t cut it.

Still, Thornton isn’t rebounding much, so maybe Nick *should* start. I guess if he is going to get 30 minutes, it doesn’t matter much whether he starts or comes off the bench. Cartier was effective in limited minutes tonight. Maybe if Nick starts at the 3, and Al’s minutes are limited, Cartier would wind up with more minutes at the 2?

Idle speculation…. Hey, this was a tough loss :( . In 65 minutes, the bench managed 8 rebounds, and 4 of them were by Armstrong in 10 of those minutes. Booker didn’t grab a single board.

We’ll play again…

Bloggers are funny characters. If the Wizards had made the shot at the end of regulation, almost everyone would be happy. @ Gotabig — you can’t even say “the last shot in regulation”! If someone had made one more FT *any time* in regulation, we’d have won the game.

Heck, right now it looks like Thornton had a bad game. If we’d have won, everyone would be saying we got the W because AT contained Tayshaun Prince. That wouldn’t be right any more than we lost because Dray missed one particular shot is right.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 21, 2010 at 11:33 PM

Up until a few games ago, AB was ONLY leading in rebounding because he was averaging about 10 more minutes a game than Javale, and then he was leading by about .4 rebound a game. To be seven feet and not get 10 rebounds a game in 35 minutes is kind of weak. If you know you have no hops and you’re slow, start using your other skills (no not dribbling).

But being that Dray isn’t our only weakness right now, I just want the team to get more umph down low. Even if it means benching dray or trading him. He’s had more than a chance to do better.

To hear all star near his name right now is a joke. I am a fan of the team, if any player is not fitting in, they should be changed, any time one player is put in front of the team as a whole, its a mistake.

All of you guys worried about Andre not getting selected on the All Star Ballot… I wouldn’t worry too much about it. The All Star Balloting is nothing more than a popularity contest. Andre isn’t one of the “big three names” on our team. It really has nothing to do with how a player is “actually” playing.

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time November 22, 2010 at 12:14 AM

I’m also on the JaVale bandwagon. He has come a long way in a years time. He has been more that hustling out there… hustling doubled? Hustling personified? Hustling to an exponential power? I’m really impressed with his desire this year.

Gilbert may have lost a step and the coach tends to play him too many minutes at this stage of his “comeback”. Other than that it is very nice to have his NBA savvy and skills working for us.

Gabbo… I’m sorry, but, at this point it appears Andre is setting high screens then camping out for the shot he seems to love… that 17 footer from the wing. I seriously doubt he is being coached to do that so consistently. Even if he had made the last shot in regulation I’d still have to ask… Why the heck was he out beyond the 3pt line??? Makes no sense. Andre needs to make his living inside to be a help to the team. Not camping out at 17 feet and beyond. He simply isn’t effective out there.

Comment from WE WANT A WINNER
Time November 22, 2010 at 12:19 AM

We lost because we are allergic to winning streaks, I think it has been three long years since we have won more than 2 games in a row. We are the only team in the NBA that can brag about that stat. Andray will improve once he gets in shape and considers playing defense. At 6ft 11 inches there is no reason why he can’t play the 4 position in this league taken up by unconventional power forwards. (landry, jamison, lewis, lee, smith, etc.)

Comment from GrifonRacing
Time November 22, 2010 at 12:24 AM

I’m starting to get “a little” behind Nick Young. We all knew he could shoot… during streaks. This year Flips individual work with him seems to be paying some dividends. His defense is much better. I’ve “never” seen him fight for rebounds as he has this year so far. Granted he doesn’t draw many fouls or get many assists, but, he is playing much better all around ball than he did the first 3 years.

Thornton has been struggling the last few games in every aspect except for defense and hustle. That guy has a serious motor. While he struggles I’d like to see a little more of Trevor Booker. He is very tenative offensively so far but I think that will come. His defense should buy him some extra minutes. At some point this season when we need some defensive stops I’d like to see the lineup of Hudson, Cartier, Booker, Hilton (yes lol I said Hilton.. I never thought I would either :) ) and JaVale.

Charlie V seems to shoot the ball at a very high % when he plays the Wizards…Nice game even though we lost. Nick Young is improving on the offensive side of the ball. Couldn’t we have ran that same play at the end of regulation but had Nick Young taking the shot? Young had an excellent game. Excellent shooting and solid d. Only 1 rebound but it was a monster.

I don’t understand people getting after Andray so hard. Everyone’s agreeing Blatche had a bad game and he still shot 41% (not terrible), had 20 pts, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, a block, and didn’t really turn the ball over.

Comment from gray16

i saw at least two times last night where gil found young in positions where he could get to the rack. if we can keep doing this, his fts will go up, his percentage will go up, and he will look like a better player. he has the athleticism and the ft shooting ability, the more we can get him to go the rim the better. and i’d still like to see some post ups by him, i felt this was a very underrated part of his game from day 1. i remember he did it a lot in his rookie year, and it seemed to be a nice weapon for him (that fadeaway in the post). i’d like to see it return in some games, especially if he has a smaller player on him.

ericw,

Gilbert, Nick and Kirk were all on the floor for the last shot.
Villaneuva left Andray wide open. In fact, Andray could have stayed about 17 feet away instead of hanging at the 3 point line and had a way better shot.

I don’t understand the logic when you have 3 guys on the floor who can shoot the rock that you kick the ball out for a guy shooting .364 from beyond the arc.

That is a very low percentage shot.
How about starting the play 3 seconds earlier, Gilbert driving, shooting and then Andray and Javale crashing the boards in case there is a miss.
Andray would have been uncovered for the rebound since Villanueva challenged the shot.

Comment from gray16
Time November 22, 2010 at 9:40 AM

well i’m just saying that nick would be better if went to the rim more.

as for if this, if that stuff, imo it does mean something. it’s a guess. it’s just like you saying we will win 20 games; that’s an if thing. you are saying if we play at the level wow predicts us to, we will win 20 games. that means something to you, so my theory on nick means something to me. we are both basing it off of observation and what we believe to be true, so no reason to downplay either one imo.

Starting The 3 Small Guard Lineup Thoughts

Im probably still against it but Ill tell you that Gil & Kirk have played so well & Al has played so bad lately that I wouldnt be shocked if Flip goes with it despite wanting otherwise and I might not even disagree with him. I know one thing, even if Al does start he will be pulled super quick in every single game if he doesnt play like he did early.

Also, its not even all about the 3 little guards but alot of it is about NY. Alot of people think he’s the odd man out when we get Wall back but all the guards including him are playing mad well while Al is struggling. I just wouldnt be shocked to see us start the little 3 or start NY or start Al but pull him quick every single game if he’s not getting it done. I still dont like having 3 guards on the floor per say because all of them seem to be a little better “with” the ball and 3 guys means they wont have the ball that much. It has to be 2 in that respect but Al better step up

Again, bad defense tells the story. Whenever you have a player hot like Rip, you put your best lock-down defender on him (like Trevor Booker)…it’s simple. However, the only thing that makes me not feel so bad about this one is that John Wall was out. With him playing, we probably would have won this game. We really are missing his defense right now and hopefully he gets back soon. If he had been the one playing Rip in OT, it probably would have been a different story.

I think starting 3 guards is just a way to give Kirk props and respect.

Nothing more and nothing less.
Once all 3 are healthy and Josh Howard comes back I think that will be the end of starting the game with 3 guards.

It’s just a starting lineup for the first few minutes of the game.

I think Nick Young will stay in the rotation from now on.
He deserves it.

A good question to ask Andray (not to slam him) is when Villaneuva left him to challenge Gilbert:
Why didn’t he follow so Gilbert could have dished him the ball for a short jump shot or LAYUP.
He might have even gotten fouled because Villanueva would have had to adjust to the pass.

That is the question that is baffling me.

Can’t wait to get Josh Howard back. Also, I would seriously look at trading Dray for a down-low, hard-nosed, and tough power forward, with good defensive skills. We have enough outside shooters, especially once Howard returns. In keeping Dray, we will always get killed going up against good low-post scoring teams like the Lakers (Gasol and Bynum), Boston (Shaq, Big Baby, and Garnett), and Orlando (Superman).

crozby, I think Dray has shown the ability to scrore in the post. I think there are 2 problems. One is he’s setting alot of screens so 90% of the time he gets the ball is when he’s on the perimiter. The 2nd problem is that he’s only been playing ball for about 45 days when every other guy in the league has been balling & training for the past 5 months or more. He’ll look better every month

draftzoid.. that is a good question, but he had an open shot…. a better question is why wasn’t it Martin or Young on the wing to take the shot. Do you really set up Dray for a game winning 20 footer?

Comment from draftazoid

I don’t buy the setting the screen argument because once you set a screen you should have time to go back to the post.

It wasn’t Young or Kirk because Detroit WANTED Andray to take that shot.
Why do you think Villanueva left Andray to go after Gilbert?
In that situation I would be more than happy for that play 100 out of 100 times.

I could hear the Pistons through my TV say “sucka” when Gilbert passed the ball to Andray.
It is all about percentages and the Wizards settled for the lowest percentage.

Ummm, actually .364 is a *good* % from 3 point range not a bad one. Of course that doesn’t make it the right play!

crozby — you’d like to trade Dray for “a down-low, hard-nosed, and tough power forward, with good defensive skills.”

Uh huh. Anyone in particular? Or would you just like to trade Dray for a player better than Dray?

That’d be good — in fact, if we trade every player on our team for a better player on another team, we’d have better players up and down the roster! Lets do that.

Uh huh. Ok, so now we know that whenever anyone gets hot vs. the Wizards, we should put Trevor Booker on him. And “it’s simple” because Trevor Booker in his total of 94 minutes in the NBA has shown that he’s a “lock-down defender.”

What is with you man?

zoid, they left Dray but Gil is still a right hander and they had Dray on the high right side, which is the spot that Gil would most likely kick it too. He shouldnt have been there. If NY or Kirk is there then he kicks it to them or the guy doesnt help & Gil can go all the way. Still not a bad play. Dray shouldve been in closer but oh well

BTW, Im not advocating the 3 guard lineup. Im just asking. I think its dumb for the most part but at the same time, if your SF is playing like crap then you almost have no choice. One thing is for sure, we better start Gil. Gil made some strange comments after the previous game saying how when Wall comes back its his show and he will take his foot off the gas. He said that he will go back to the bench. I hope he’s just trying to be a good teammate because it would be stupid to make him a bench player. If Flip is hell bent on starting Kirk then it better be over Al and not Gil.

Still, Id prefer Al starting, then NY if he struggles, and then go small. Maybe even Booker before then but Gil better start

Sources: Alonzo Gee close to rejoining Washington Wizards
By Michael Lee

The Wizards are on the verge of an unlikely reunion, with the team moving closer toward signing swingman Alonzo Gee, according to two league sources.

Gee spent part of last season with the Wizards, moving from a 10-day contract player to a starter, before bolting for San Antonio after his second 10-day contract expired. The Spurs offered Gee some guaranteed money through this season, which appeared more enticing than the Wizards’ plans to keep him for the rest of the season. San Antonio waived Gee last week.

The Wizards have 15 players under contract, which means they would have to release someone. Lester Hudson is on a non-guaranteed contract and stands as the most likely candidate.

Nick has played more 3 than 2 so far this year, and he’s talked about playing the 3 in a way that makes me think he plays it a lot in practice. He’s been more productive lately than Thornton, but if his shot is off he’s *less* productive, because he doesn’t bring much else. Not going to make much difference in our chance to win a game between those 2 guys.

As to who starts between Kirk and Gil, I think of it this way: John Wall could get @35 minutes. Kirk and Gil could split the remaining 61 guard minutes about evenly. What difference does it make which of them starts? It doesn’t.

Great. This ends that 3 guard lineup crap I was talking about. Al better step up now. On a side note, I said last year that Gee was an idiot. He probably listened to his agent. No way he shouldve left us for SA and a guaranteed contract the following season. He’s a D-Leaguer who wants to play. He couldve played big minutes in alot of games for us down the stretch. Sure we sucked and werent going to make the playoffs. We also werent going to gurantee him a contract but he shouldve known that he wouldve went to SA and not even dress for 1 single game. He shouldve known that with our roster he wouldve gotten a contract this year even if we didnt gurantee it.

If he wouldve stayed & played well then we might not even had signed Howard and it couldve been his show. Dont get me wrong, I still love Howard and he is the guy if healthy but Im just speaking from a Gee standpoint. Good move anyways as Hudson doesnt look ready for the pros at all and Al is struggling as of late. We also need that toughness and both him & McGee will be crazy with Wall pushing the rock

Alonzo played the 2 for us last year, not the 3. And he played well.

On the other hand, no, he wasn’t stupid to leave for more guaranteed money. Instead, he was *smart* to leave for more guaranteed money.

Read that phrase a couple of times — “guaranteed money” — and see if the point gets through.

Why take someone else’s problem?

There is something drastically wrong with Alonso Gee if he was released after two weeks of the season.
You spend summer camp and fight through traiing camp to make the roster and then you get released.
Wow. Something either physically or most likely “mentally.”

Great. We’re going to get another “head case.”

Gee played more of the 3. We still had Miller who was the 2. He was dumb to leave for guaranteed money. Its just like when Aaron Miles was great fur us in the SL a couple of years ago but turned down an invite to training camp because we wouldnt guarantee him a spot so he went overseas for the guarantee despite him being great and us having no PG’s hardly at all. He wouldve easily made the team. Now he’s struggled every year to get into the league and is a bench warming scrub when he’s in.

You think he wouldnt have made our team? That basically is a gurantee. Even if he didnt make it, he still probably wouldve made some other team. Now look, he’s back anyways but now we have multiple guys who could be ahead of him while he hasnt played hardly one bit in SA last year or this year. He doesnt even dress. He couldve got rotation minutes here

Hudson, Martin and Ndaiye are all non guaranteed players.
They become guaranteed sometime in January if the Wizards decide to keep any of them.

dlts20,

This is a business. You go where the money is at.
When you get as much money as Mike Miller and Haslem then you “might consider” taking less money.

Young players are smart to go where they are guaranteed cash.
Hmmmm. Scenario:
I’m out of college and I’m BROKE:
1. Do I take a guaranteed $200,000 and go to Europe
or
2. Do take a chance of making $400,000 playing for the Wizards “IF” I make the team.

I can buy a whole lot of Ramen Noodles on $200,000.
If I don’t make the team I can use my $7 an hour job at GIANT to buy Ramen Noodles.

You would think that once Alonso Gee made the final roster that he would play nice so that he can continue to get paid, whether he plays or not.

Something is very wrong with the player.
I hope Ernie does not bring another problem player here.

Head case? What’s up with that?

They needed a 3d pg, so they signed chris quinn. That gave them 16 guys, so someone had to go. Alonzo was the guy.

Big deal. How do you get “head case” out of that? Happens all the time. When we cut Lester Hudson will you decide he’s a “head case”?

Comment from Tom Mandel

@ dlts20 — draftazoid summed up the situation for a guy like Gee, except of course he went to SA not to Europe.

The one factor he didn’t mention is *injury.*

A marginal player takes the guaranteed money. And you have *no idea* whether we’d have brought him back — did we bring back Singleton?

Tom, if not Trevor Booker, would love to know what your strategy would have been on Rip last night. Or, would you have done nothing???

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 22, 2010 at 6:57 PM

Why am I supposed to worry especially about Rip? Because he scored 27 points?

Why wouldn’t I have been worrying about Jason Maxiell instead? Because he only scored 2/3 as many points?

Thing is, Maxiell took only 1/3 as many shots as Rip to get 2/3 as many points. Why wouldn’t I have concentrated on *him* not Rip?

Why wouldn’t my focus have been on Charlie Villanueva? He doesn’t stand out, because he scored 2 points less than Rip? But he took 3 fewer shots than Rip. Why wouldn’t I have focused on him?

Finally, where does the assumption come from that we did “nothing” to defend Rip, because we didn’t put that lock-down defender Trevor Booker, a guy who hasn’t even played played 100 NBA minutes, on him?

“…it’s simple” — was it really so simple, crozby? We got beat by Rip? No. Not simple, and we didn’t get beat by Rip.
