Game Day Grizzlies

8:10 AM Dave Johnson checking in….Looking forward to getting back at it tonight….congrats to Gilbert Arenas, JaVale McGee and John Wall for being listed on the All-Star Ballot….would have loved to see Andray Blatche also included in the mix….without getting in to the All-Star or not  debate…Blatche has strong case for  at least being on the ballot.  Not making excuses but the schedule did not do any favors for the Wizards against the Celtics. The Celtics were well rested and played like they are capable of playing. The Wizards were coming off a game the night before and did not have a good night. It was competitive until midway through the second quarter and the Wizards were actually holding their own on the boards. But there were  too many quick shots and missed open looks in the second quarter and of course the Wizards just could not come up with the defense to slow the Celtics down. Again this will be a season of discovery complete with ups and downs…..Here’s to an UP tonight and let’s hope John Wall can get back on the court…THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from verizon Center as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE    link at the top of the page. We start at 7:00 PM.

5:55PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in….No John Wall or Yi tonight…still day-to-day…great to see Greivis Vasquesz back in the area.

6:45 PM EST….starters are in….Arenas and Hinrich at guards…Al Thornton and Andray Blatche at forwards…JaVale McGee at center…Grizzlies..Mike Conley and OJ Mayo at guards…Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol

Guys, this tells the story and echos everything I have been talking about (reference defense on our part). Is this confusion on the zone defensive scheme or just lack of effort. I have my thoughts, but wanted yours. This is video from Wednesday’s game which show the totally lack of defense:

Should be a good game. I think Gil may play really well because he plays a ton with guys like Mayo & Sam Young in the offseason when he’s lighting it up. The Grizz are also huge inside & can board but neither of those guys are good defenders so I think we should attack alot and stay aggressive

This video clearly shows that we are getting beat easily on picks. If you freeze the video at 3 seconds, it is remarkable how open Rondo is while coming through the lane. This should not be happening, and luckily Rondo was intimidated enough by McGee to miss the shot. Blatche and Hinrich should have switched on this pick, whereas Hinrich would have stayed with KG and Blatche would have floated into the lane to cover Rondo. None of that happened. I blame this mostly on Blatche, who should have clearly seen the pick happening and rotated. I have seen this several, several times with Blatche, and often McGee as well.

Blatche is a true liability on defense.

crozby, that is a lack of effort, not a result of zone defense. blatche just completely gave up on that play. and if mcgee had done that, there would’ve been a timeout and a benching for the rest of the game for him. if there is any main problem i have with flip, it is definitely his favoritism towards certain players.

good luck to the wiz tonight, should be a good game. mcgee will have his hands full with gasol, but he has been looking better on defense. i hope to see continued minutes for booker and young, and some more minutes for seraphin and H.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time November 19, 2010 at 11:11 AM

@crozby – Yep, coach you are correct about the fact that Blatche and Hinrich should have switched. But, I’ll bet I can find many instances where, on the same type of play, they did switch. There is no a single player in the history of the NBA who has not made many mistakes on defense…otherwise the scores might be 20-18. Just like good pitching will beat good hitting; good defense will beat good offense. The real issue is the fact that a veteran Celtics team, with good coaching, was able to exploit the horrible Wizards zone defense so often.

JaVale needs some help from Blatche !!!

When their in the game together JaVale looks like a Mexican jumping bean fliying around trying to block shots. Most of the time I don’t even know where Blatche is ? It’s the same thing we had to deal with when Jamison was here. Blatche helps us on the offensive end, but kills us on the defensive end. I think he’s a better athlete than what he’s been showing, it looks like he came back to soon from the foot injury cause he has absolutely on lift. I guess the only thing we can hope for is that he fully heals and gets back some of his athleticism. Maybe that’s why they left his name off the All-Star ballot !!!

Comment from crozby
Time November 19, 2010 at 11:30 AM

Thanks. One of the biggest things we teach our team on defense is to switch on picks…see it coming and rotate quickly. We have one of the best defensive teams (if not the best) in our league and we won the league championship two years ago with lockdown hard-nosed defense. This year, our defense seems to be even better and we are looking at winning the championship again this year.

Great defense wins championships, which is what Larry Brown created with Detroit, before Flip took over.

Comment from crozby
Time November 19, 2010 at 11:33 AM

Not saying that it is totally Flip’s fault, but you have to instill hard-nose desire (the right way) in a team in order to play great defense.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 19, 2010 at 11:37 AM

i don’t see the point of going after flip anymore…..the players still need to go on the floor and perform. AB has a choice on whether to shoot outside or take it to the hole…..on D, he needs to move his feet. But hey, each day brings new opportunities

in other news JWall is a game time decision

Comment from ericw
Time November 19, 2010 at 11:58 AM

I have to question McGee being on the ballot over Blatche. There are lots of good forwards on the ballot but Linas Kleiza? Really? One of his biggest games so far was against us…

I hope the game changer plays tonight.

Good matchup between Javale and the other Gasol.

For 100 points who can guess, without googling, Hasheem Thabeet’s Points and Rebounds average so far this year?
(Hasheem was the 2nd overall pick in 2009)

For whatever reason, Blatche only occassionally plays like an All-star IMO. So I don’t get much worried about whether we can vote for him.

The coaches need to get to the bottom of his play. I think it’s related to conditioning. Maybe it’s just something that will come with time.

I agree. Zach Randolph is a bull, and Marc Gasol is very tall and strong. Mcgee battled with them, and his 6 offensive rebounds were pretty crucial.

That last put back dunk also forced them to take a three.

Gil shot 10fts. I dont think Gil has that many attempts in the last 4 seasons combined…lol

I dont care if he misses the layups. I just like to see him attack & get to the line again. He actually made a couple of layups tonight. Still, I think he can only miss so many before he starts trying to jump a little higher & go harder at the rim. Thats when he will be an elite scorer again

@Fusey – Did you watch the game? I suspect that you are blogging based upon the statsheet. Blatche took the ball to hole almost every time. He shot horribly in the first half (2/8), but much better in the second half (4/7). He was one rebound short of a double/double. This is not like the last 32 games of last season. We’ve got other players who can score now (primarily Gil and Kirk). Additionally, in Filp’s guard-oriented offense, it seems that the Wizards get the ball to the low post this year only when the game is on the line. When that happens, Gil seems to be the only player smart enough to clear out and give Blatche room to operate.

Comment from getabigboyoffense

I believe that we might have easily put this game away in the 4th quarter if we had had Yi and John Wall. The Wizards are 4-7; 2-6 with Wall and Hinrich starting, and
2-1 with Arenas and Hinrich starting. I still like the idea of the experienced Gil and Kirk starting and John coming off the bench to give us a change of pace.

Both Gil and ‘Dray are starting to get their game legs back. It takes awhile, but you can see the improvement game-by-game.

It is hard for me to get enthused about some sports site that writes as though there is some expertise involved when it is simply a fan who has invested some $ to get a voice. Just because you have a sports web site doesn’t make you a sports authority.

Comment from getabigboyoffense

Then again, I guess that Wilbon and Lee are considered sports authorities because they write for a recognized newspaper while they are both BS mail-it-in-typists. I really hate referring to them as writers. Acknowledging either as a real writer implies that they would have an understanding of the subject about which they are reporting and a knowledge of grammar and syntax. I haven’t seen either demonstrate any of the preceding. So, I guess what I am saying is that I have as much (probably more) respect for the opinions of the Wizards bloggers than I have for other sources. The Blatche critics are going to have to tell us just what is wrong with the following regarding Andray and the Wizards team as-a-whole. Andray Blatche is:
1st in offensive rebounds;
1st in defensive rebounds;
1st in total rebounds;
1st in total points scored;
1st in 3-point percentage;
1st in field goals attempted;
1st in field goals made;
1st in free throw percentage;
2nd in free throws attempted;
2nd in free throws made;
2nd in minutes played;
2nd in points per game;
2nd in steals.

I think that that demonstrates involvement and consistency. Just what more should we expect of this guy?

Update – after the Grizzlies game Andray if also:
1st in free throws attempted;
1st in free throws made;

I believe that that makes him 1st in 11 of the categories previously mentioned and 2nd in the remaining two.

I wonder if any other player in the league leads his team in 11 of those 13 categories and is 2nd in the remaining two!?

The win could not have been done without our veterans staying true to there game. Thank you Kirk and Gil for being professional at both ends of the court. However what really excites me is Javale Macgee coming into his own with steals, consistent blocks,extremely high rebounds and double digit scoring threat.When he figures the scoring out we may having something special in the making. The rebounds is something he was very weak on early because maybe he didn’t want to bang and get in there with the lions”Howard”,tigers”Gasol” and bears”SHAQ” but he now does!

Rebounds is the key and somebody has to do it. I also like what Armstrong brought to the team with consistent rebounding and scoring but I feel he can bring the blocks also but we shall see about that! I feel once Yi gets back and does his thing with the BIG 3 scoring”Rebounding,Scoring,Blocked Shots” we can then start progressing to 500% winning percent and maybe beyound. We are 4-2 at home lets see if we can make it 10 -2 the next few weeks!

You are our best freethrow shooter and you need to be hitting that charity stripe atleast 7 times a game if not 10 times with your skills. What I saying we need more of a consistent game from you every night . I would like to make a goal of 15 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal. We need you at the freethrowline to help get there guards and centers in foul trouble early so Gil and Kirk can do there thing in the 4th quarters! Fineeto!

only got to see the fourth quarter last night, but when i turned it on we were losing, and when i turned it off we had won, so i can’t complain lol.

as for gil, great to see him getting back to his old shooting self. if he can keep that up beside wall… watch out. also love that he got to the line, that shows he isn’t minding contact too much.

hinrich also seems to be coming around nicely. could’ve just been he wasn’t used to the new offense yet, could’ve just needed some time period to get back into form, or could just be having a decent little streak. we shall see.

as for blatche, his shooting and turnovers were bad, but his defense was better from what i saw, and he did help out in the fourth quarter.

but my man mcgee. great to see him finally close out a game. he’s playing great right now, and his energy is really helping out. really glad to see him improving, this is what we wanted to see, and it’s coming into fruition.

and finally nick young. oh how i loved to see him drive to the rim for that dunk, even though it only happened once. i really wish flip would design a couple of plays for nick to iso instead of just popping jumpers off of screens. nick is a decent post up guy, has some of the best handles on the team, and has the athleticism to get to the rim. if we could get flip and nick to buy into this, he wouldn’t be as inconsistent imo. but i doubt this is going to happen, so i’m not going to hold my breath.

but all in all, great to see a win, and hope to see some more soon. also hope to see wall back soon, yi back soon, but booker should continue to get minutes.

Wall,Blatche, and Arenas are a big contributors for turnovers if we can get them to contribute a few turnovers maybe 1 & 2 then we can progress to the next level! The way I see it we need that to be a mandate for the team overall to keep the turnovers 12 or below and make it a habit to attack the rim when opportunities come. The problem is defensive minded teams like Boston, Orlando and San Antonio take away the driving down the middle because of Shaq,Howard or Duncan waitng for the block. The coach has to figure out our next course of action maybe high pick and rolls with the center out away form the basket or something to get those monsters Shaq or Howard away from the basket! I also want to know the time table for our very own Josh Howards return because he could be a handful for opposing teams and that means more options for us!

@ GABBO

No, I didn’t watch the game nor was I at there live. I’m on work travel. I do have NBA LeaguePass Broadband, but Wiz games are always blacked-out when “I’m in the area”. I did watch the Bulls/Mavs though.

I asked a family member who lives on the other coast to see if he can watch the Wiz — and he can.

Games are archived, but if there is a blackout in my area, the archived games are blacked-out too. It’s like LeaguePass broadband figures out what Internet feed you’re using, matches it with the area with the closest NBA team, and blacks out that game (unless it is sold out at the arena).

I was trying to see if I can read the box score and conclude certain things with players. I guess I’ve failed. I don’t have cable TV at home because I’ve invested season tickets instead.

From what we all have concluded, we have a decent team, not a great team, but a decent team. Meaning there is not a lot of room for error. We showed last night that we could overcome errors and still win, but against better teams, last night’s play will equate to a blowout. That is saying alot, because we are rebuilding and right now, we only have about three or four players that we expect to be around for the long haul……so buckle up boys and girls and enjoy the show.

BTW-Anyone on our team that is shooting jump shots only is king of their choice, because they can also take it to the rim (i.e. NY and AB), so don’t blame it all on the coach.

This should tell him and our fellow bloggers what the rest of the NBA thinks of Andray’s game.

He is a good player but nothing about him stands out.
The contract he signed should also give everyone else a clue. 5 years and 35 million just does not say he is a special player. He would be in the same category as a John Salmons according to the contract he just signed.

I wonder if Carmelo is now interested in playing with John Wall.

The biggest blunder I see with the Carmelo fiasco is that New Jersey did not want to make the trade with Denver because they did not want to add Brook Lopez in the deal.
Brook Lopez or Carmelo Anthony.
Who would you rather have?

Comment from draftazoid
Time November 20, 2010 at 3:14 PM

Remember when Magic Johnson had James Worthy as the Small Forward with the Lakers. Kareem retired a few years later but Magic always had Worthy. A second Superstar on the team.

How about when Carmelo becomes an unrestricted free agent next year we team him up with John Wall.

That would be nasty.
Remember that they always had that Power Forward who did all the dirty work inside like Kurt Rambis or Mychael Thompson.
Trevor Booker will fill that role with us.

If somehow we can maneuver to get Carmelo Anthony here. I know it might seem like a pipe dream but DC is on the east coast closer to New York than Denver is.

We have $44 million in guaranteed salaries next year. Kirk is the easiest player to move at $8 million with one year left on his contract.
That will give us $17 million which is one max contract.
We can sign one max contract next year without giving up any other players besides Kirk. That would mean losing Yi, Thornton and Young after this season.

I can only dream of a Wall and Melo based team for the next 4 years.
You need at least 2 Superstars to be able to win an NBA Championship.
Do we have that on the roster right now?
Or do we need to get a Carmelo to be able to compete for one?

Comment from draftazoid

Check out this Trade Machine- ESPN that I plugged in and worked:

Carmelo Anthony- Denver
for
Kirk Hinrich- Washington
Andre Blatche- Washington
Al Thornton- Washington

Denver can then move Hinrich (very much in demand) and Blatche (another player who could be in high demand especially with his manageable contract).
Denver could keep Thornton (only 2.8 million with qualifying option next year) to replace Melo at SF.

I could definitely see the Wizards doing this trade. It would all depend if Ted Leonsis wants to sign Carmelo to the 3 year extention and if Carmelo wants to come to DC and play with John Wall. :)

Let’s get it done Ted and Ernie!

draftazoid, IMO you’re ahead of yourself. We’re on a pace to win 30 games and our only established star (Arenas) is 28 and may be over the hill when the rest of the team is ready to seriously compete. We need for a couple more drafts to go by and see who of our young players become pieces of the puzzle. Once we have a better picture of our strengths we’ll have a better picture of who it’s worth spending on to put us over the top.

Concerning Arenas, I’m beginning to consider the possibility of his being part of our future. Of course if we can trade him in the next year or two we’ll do it. But if not, maybe he’ll still be very good (even if not worth $20M/year) until he’s 32. Then we can use his cap space to sign Mr. Wonderful from the free agent market in 2014.

The Nuggets would probably like a three way trade involving sending Gil to the Magic for VC who goes to Denver with AB and NY for Melo and another player from Denver coming to the Wiz.
The key is if Arenas get’s his swagger back would Ted let him go and Orlando taking Gil to try and win a championship.
VC would be off the books next year.
Melo would definitely take the pressure off JWal and we still are able to rebuild. Check it out on trade machine. Melo, Gil and VC make 17 mil.

John Wall has potential. Players aren’t picked in the #1 slot in the draft unless they have a lot of upside. But, being picked #1 doesn’t guarantee super-stardom. At this stage of his career, John Wall has speed. He is not yet even a good NBA point guard. So far, the Wizards record is better without him playing. The New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors have agreed in principle on a five-player trade that would send Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless to the Raptors for Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks, a source told ESPN.com Saturday.

Stojakovic

The deal was close to being completed Friday night, but had been held up over the amount of cash the Hornets would send to the Raptors in the trade, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In order for the deal to pass muster under league rules, it actually would be executed as two separate trades to get around a restriction preventing Bayless from being included in a multi-player deal prior to Dec. 23 — two months from the date the Hornets acquired Bayless from Portland.

A trade call likely will take place Saturday afternoon.

Stojakovic is in the final year of his contract, earning $14.25 million, and has fallen out of the rotation in New Orleans, averaging just 7.5 points in less than 15 minutes per game playing behind Marco Belinelli, whom the Hornets acquired in another trade with the Raptors during the summer.

Bayless

Bayless is averaging 4.5 points and 2.5 assists as the backup point guard behind Chris Paul.

Jack, who is earning $4.6 million and has two more seasons left on his contract, has started all 13 games for the Raptors, averaging 10.8 points and 4.5 assists. But he has played an average of only 26 minutes per night, basically operating in a time-share with Jose Calderon at point guard.

Andersen, a backup center, is averaging 5.1 points and 3.1 rebounds, and Banks (in the final year of his contract, making $4.85 million) has appeared in only three games this season.

I think the NBA coaches know very well how good Andray is. That’s why as, Gotabig says, just about all of them call for the double teams against him all the games – until the Wiz have a counter for that strategy, it is the smart thing to do.

As for the analysts, they are (1) still going on first impressions of when Andray came into the league and (2) tagging along on the TNT talking points. They haven’t done their homework at all. Andray is averaging 17/8. For a guy still 10lbs over his optimum wt and with a bum knee and a rookie guard dominating the play, that’s pretty good. I wouldn’t be suprised if Andray finishes the year at 19/9.

By the way, I thought the defensive switch Flip made by putting Andray on Gasol and Javalle on Randolph played a big part in winning the game. Plus, ditching that zone was a big help.

You guys have to remember that the list are done before the season. Wall is the #1 pick, Gil is the former Superstar, and McGee had the monster summer and to outsiders seemed destined for a big leap with his style along with Wall’s.

Meanwhile Dray was injuried with a broken foot. Thats why he was left off the ballot, plain & simple. They figured there was no way he could come back that late and still be an All Star so there is no use of puttiing him in. You could argue him over McGee but the Center spot in this league is weak, Dray was hurt, and McGee had a big time summer.

Just because he’s a wizard and we are wizard fans doesn’t mean that he should be an all-star…..i mean really, we were just complaining about him not going inside, not hustling, etc. If we see it, the rest of the league can see it also. The list of forwards on the list seem better “situated” in their careers moreso than AB right now(i didn’t recognize a few players). AB is not an all-star, maybe he has all-star potential, and maybe he can effect a game every night (in a good way)…but we are still waiting on that potential to arrive also……until then CMON SON :!: :!: :!: :!:

I saw him play in the Jordan Classic in 2004 and thought that he had the greatest variety of skills that I had ever seen on a 6’11″ player. I was thrilled when the Wizards selected him in the second round. What I don’t understand is how everyone else doesn’t have as high an opinion. You should remember that I was strongly advocating for ‘Dray beginning with EJ’s final year as coach; so much so that I blogged for EJ’s removal as coach. I felt, all along, that EJ and Tapout were ridiculous in the way they played an over-hyped player like AJ ahead of AB when it was obvious that AB was the better player and was kicking AJ’s butt on a regular basis in practice (Yes, before you ask, I do know that for a fact). When he finally got a chance for the last 32 games of last season, AB demonstrated his skills and the bandwagon got very crowded.

This year we have the #1 draft pick who I believe will become a very good NBA player. Gil is back and improving every game. We picked up a veteran guard in Kirk Hinrich. There are a lot of offensive option out there for the Wizards, and still Andray is the focal point of opponents’ defenses (as soon as we get a coach who knows how to counter a double-team, we will be in good shape). NBA coaches have stated that their instructions to their players include “if Blatche touches the ball he gets an automatic double-team” (and yes, I know that for a fact also). I would think that you, as an advocate for statistics, would recognize the ability of a player who is leading his team in 11 positive categories this year despite having been unable to workout for over three months during the summer and is just now beginning to get his legs under him.

I’ve told you that I played and coached against NBA players and coaches. I don’t know what your background is regarding the game. However, I know that you are a true Wizards fan, and I know that you believe that I am also. We simply approach things from a different perspective. Before anyone might suggest it, No, I am not related to AB. But, I am a fan who happens to have an unique insight into the Wizards team. Andray Blatche is the real deal. Blatche, Gil, Wall, Kirk, Howard, Thornton, Yi, and McGee are a formidable 8 rotation. Watch out from game 20 on…

BTW Gabbo, did you copy that before you posted?
Blatche is still coming back from injuries, Gil is coming
back. I believe if key players get and/or stay healthy
we will go to the playoffs. That includes Howard.
What do you think of an 8 man rotation? With so many
games in a season wouldn’t it make sense to have 9 or
10? Another basketball question.. what is a loose ball
foul??
I think your last post showed a little insight into your
intense dislike of Antawn. I know you have alot of other
reasons but for the record I think very highly of him and
it appears many others do too.

GABBO I saw the same thing u saw in AB whe he came out of HS. My frustration with him over the years has been his inconsistent play. All Star players who really merit the selection find a way to excel even when they are doubleteamed. I watch AB and he is one of the softest big men in the game. I have been waiting to see more mental and physical toughness from him. You know he has the ability to be a game changer. But that part has not showed up consistently.

@ Gotabig — no one questions Dray’s gifts, least of all I. The ’04 Jordan Classic has passed out of my memory, though I usually do see them and probably saw it. In any case, like you I was very happy we got a prospect like Dray late in Round 2, so I must have been aware of him somehow.

On the other hand, that everyone but you (and his family) had *doubts* about him along w/ recognizing his gifts is also something we can learn from the fact that he was there for the choosing at #47. I think that most people who had doubts then still have doubts now — and that they still have reason to have doubts.

No, I’ve never played against NBA players (a laughable idea in my case!) or coached at any level at all beyond the most trivial kinds of experiences. You are right that I’m a Wizards fan. When I lived in SF, I was a Warriors fan for nearly 20 years (they’re having just the kind of improved season I expected from them when they acquired David Lee, btw). As a fan, I used to argue that Joe Barry Carroll was better than the bum (“Joe Barely Cares”) he was accused of being. That’s what you do when you’re a devoted fan. There’s a halo around your guys.

If you think Andray Blatche has played well overall so far this year, then there’s no question he has a halo around him in your eyes! He hasn’t. A few games, yes. Overall, far from yes.

Am I an advocate for statistics? I’m an advocate for *analysis,* yes, and numbers facilitate analysis. But those same numbers can be manipulated to show just about anything, as we all know.

The best Wizards player so far this season has been JaVale McGee. Anyone who reads or writes here knows that I denied that he’d improved last year and have been skeptical (if hopeful) about him. So I *can* change my mind. Obviously there’s some physical reason (prob. asthma) that his minutes are limited. I noted that vs. Memphis, Flip brought him out and back in frequently, and he was able to get 38 minutes. Maybe that’s how it has to be managed? If he plays 30 minutes a night over the season, we’ll be a better team than I projected.

The 2d best player on the team so far this year, minute for minute and overall, has been John Wall. Because of how widely his performance level oscillates, it’s too early to conclude anything from 314 minutes, but the signs are good for him. He’s held his turnovers down a bit, shot a bit better than feared, and everything else has been as advertised.

3d best so far? Pretty clearly, it’s been Kirk. He leads the team in minutes, and he’s been productive both at the point and the 2 guard. Gilbert has been good on the night’s when he’s been good, and he seems to be getting better. I’m only looking at *overall* production minute by minute so far.

Hilton Armstrong has also been a pleasant surprise. Overall, he’s playing much better than in previous years (again, here you see me changing my opinion on a player).

Nick has also played better than in the past. He hasn’t played well overall, don’t mistake my meaning, but not the bust level player he had been.

On the other hand, as expected Yi has been terrible. And Booker, despite showing promise, hasn’t put together a productive NBA game yet.

What has dragged Dray down so far this year?

Overall, he’s shooting 43% — that’s down from his career average. Overall, his rebounding is just about what it’s always been.

But, his shooting is on its way back. Over the last 3 games (2 wins and a blowout loss), he’s 19-37 including going 3-3 on 3-pointers. That’s terrific — esp. given that it includes a 6-15 outing vs. Memphis. And he’s 80% from the line in those games.

There’s one big problem this year for Dray — turnovers. Dray is turning the ball over at almost 2 times his career rate. In those same last 3 games where he shot so well, he turned it over 12 times.

Gotabig will say ‘that’s because he’s double-teamed’, but it’s really the opposite. Other teams look at film. If they see a guy who often turns it over when he’s doubled and is having trouble finding good passes out of the double, then you bet they will double-team him every time he gets the ball down low.

I think this problem will go away; it’s still early days in the season. But it is there. And it does drag down Dray’s overall production right now.

this dude is funny, but he spits out some good info

@ShamSports: Peja Stojakovic’s value as an expiring contract is mitigated when you see the number of other huge expirings out there. http://bit.ly/93h0ls

I don’t blame AB’s turnovers on the double-team. He is averaging 3.27 turnovers per game. That’s too many! It is one of the areas where he needs to focus. The other is his shot selection. He has to get that average up over 50%. His over-all numbers are good (best in most categories on the Wizards). He needs to work on limiting his turnovers and taking better shots.

Gil
The mid-range game is what you are best at out of the three ranges and you have yet to display it all season. The off pick screen jumper or the around the pick for a high arcing touch of the glass at a angle like Tim Duncan. I would like to keep them guessing and you have it all! The thing that made you great was your unpredictability because they had to figure out what you wanted to do most! The 3 ball was just icing on the cake the drives to the basket was devastating but the mid-range game is the one that made you famous. I still remember the Chicago game winner with Kirk and Chandler in your face with arms up and ball going through the the net :Swish!
