Game Day Boston

7:19 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in….Greetings from rainy, cold Boston…but it doesn’t matter…that was  a great feeling last night. As so many commented on the radio post-game show…it was just nice to enjoy a game that Wizards were able to close out and play everyone dressed. It really was the old cliche..team effort. Gilbert Arenas making his first start of the season led the Wizards charge to pull away when he scored 10 of his 20 points in the third quarter. KirkHinrich had 13 points and 12 assists and was a big reason why the Wizards finished with 28 assists. Andray Blatche was the high-scorer with 22 points and on the radio we thought he played his most efficient game. Blatche’s 9 of 13 shooting from the field is a credit to his shot selection as he was getting scores in the paint. There were so many bench contribution starting with Nick Young’s 20 points and including Hilton Armstrong and Trevor Booker’s energy and intensity. Of note also the Wizards held the Raptors to 40% shooting and Andrea Bargnani was never allowed to get going….I know I rambled but it was fun…Tonight it will be a challenge on the second of a back-to back against a well-rested Celtics team….Will provide injury updates as we have them…..THE BLOGCAST..live radio and live blogging…we invite you to connect with yours truly and Glenn Consor tonight from TD Garden  as we take you inside the game….Wizards basketball this year can be heard on NINE radio stations from Baltimore to North Carolina. Our flagship station in Washington is 106.7 FM and in Baltimore Fox 1370 SportsRadio..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE    link at the top of the page. We start at 7:30 PM.

6:15 PM Dave and Glenn checking in from TD Garden….No John Wall tonight…and Yi will also miss tonight’s game…Delonte West is expected back from ten game suspension tonight for the Celtics

7:10 PM EST..starters are in…Wizards will have  Kirk Hinrich and Gilbert Arenas guards….Andray  Blatche and Al Thronton forward  and JaVale McGee at center…..Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen are the Celtics guards….Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett at forwards  and Shaquille O’Neal at center

great to see we got a win last night. even better to see progress from young and booker.

and while tom might think i’m crazy for saying this, but nick’s rebounding doesn’t even surprise me. these past few seasons i’ve seen him right there to get a rebound but just letting a teammate get it instead. this season he is taking the kevin love approach and just going for it, teammate or not. but either way you look at it, his rebounding has improved a good deal. if he can keep scoring and rebounding, he has to keep getting minutes.

as for gil, great to see he’s getting back into shape and getting better on the court. hope to see more progress from him as well.

tonight is a huge, huge hurdle to climb: the best team in the east. don’t expect a win, just want to see some hard work and hustle. if you see that, no matter the final outcome, it’s hard not to be pleased.

@ draftazoid

As much as I’ve been on the Wall bandwagon from the gitgo, I have to say if he is stuggling mightily, he HAS to come off the bench if Hinrich and Arenas are completely healthy.

Evan Turner is not as athletic as Iguodala, but he has a better all around game. Yet, Turner is coming off the bench from the start of the season (not currently since Iggy is hurt).

On an “NBA rules” comment, I think this play will be outlawed next season

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8Te-kD_hCY

I’ve seen this move a couple of times during All-Star games, but I believe this should be an “illegal offense” during sanctioned games.

Gil Is Good But Could Be Great If……

he got over the mental hurdle of finishing at the rim. He’s doing every single thing else way but from a scoring standpoint he is still dependant on his jumpshot. He’s not getting to the line, isnt attacking the rim as much as he should, and when he does he either passes or doesnt go as hard which makes him miss or not get the call. Now you can talk about the injuries and he’s obviously not the same athelete as he was but its still not an excuse because he is far from a gimp. Its all mental.

1st off think about all the Offseason stories about Gil playing with All Stars, looking unstoppable, driving to the rack non stop, and having numerous dunks. We always chalk it up to just Offseason street ball but I dont think thats the case anymore. I see a few signs that suggest otherwise. 1 is that his touch around the rim is back. The shot isnt going in but its very soft now. The last couple of years he was badly missing layups and the shot would hit hard off the backboard every single time. Now they are softly just spinning out.

The other thing is that he’s getting more & more burst every game. He’ll never be what he was or be a John Wall but these last few games and the Raptors game in particular, I saw some plays where he looked mad quick driving the ball but he rarely looked for the rim or took off alot of gas when he got there. Last but not least and the main reason why I feel that its mental is because of his rebounding. Have you been watching him? Forget the numbers he’s getting but look how he gets them. He’s getting way up. He’s jumping over 7 footers alot of times. He’ll come through the crowd with no worries and sky up for a board, yet on the Offensive end he’s timid at the rim & barely leaves the ground. That crap is mental.

Gil got 20 tonight and played a very good all around game but that shouldve easily had been a 30pt game and dont tell me that its better for him to do all around stuff. He can do both, just like Wade or whoever. Im just saying that it shouldve been 30 because if he attacks more & goes to the rack like he goes for boards then he’s back to getting to the line 8 times per game, espically with Wall pushing the rock. Not only that but the guy is literally probably P4P the strongest guy in the league right now. Look at him going for boards or look at him when he drives & bumps into someone. No one is stronger. He’s mad powerful and guys are bouncing off him.

You get Howard back & coming off the bench while getting Dray more healthy then this team is very good if Gil just adds that final mental hurdle and yes it is mental. He gets that back and he will look unstoppable out there. Just throw caution to the wind Gil and go at the rack, jump high like you do on the boards, and try to finish. Its all mental. Dont get it twisted though. I know its early and he’s just getting back so he can definetly get there but someone just needs to tell him about it also. He can do it, easily

why do you think that should be illegal fusion? it’s the same thing as taking a shot, missing, and getting your own rebound. it’s a risky play which takes a good deal of skill and timing to get right, so i say let it stay. it’s not like it’s getting abused or anything.

1. We played well last night (great shooting).

2. I am still concerned about Dray’s defense and rebounding, which I think could be better. Dray often hangs out on the perimeter and therefore is not underneath the basket a lot for rebounds and putbacks. This concerns me. Although a good game, I hope he continues to attack the basket more and control the paint more. We need him to be a more powerful force down low to help out. In fact, Gil had just as many rebounds last night as he did (7).

3. Al Thornton needs to work on his outside shooting (seriously). His shot is not there, and we need that. Once he gets better at his shooting, he will be a more complete player and better for the team.

4. Javale’s offense needs to improve. Besides doing well in blocking shots and rebounding, he only had 8 points in 26 minutes. He is usually the tallest player on the floor, but his post game (including footwork) has got to get better. He should be averaging around 15 ppg. Heck, Armstrong played only 16 minutes, had more points, and shot 83% from the field. Javale only shot 42% from the field. Something’s wrong with this picture.

Good showing, but still plenty of work to do. Big test tonight. If we shoot the ball well and play great perimeter defense, we will have a chance.

I dont care what anyone says, Im pumped for this game. I still say we matchup really well with this team. Dray dominated KG more than anyone in the league did last year. Thorton gives guys like Melo & Pierce fits. Now we have Gil & Wall to go against Allen & Rondo. We can matchup with that team. The only problem is that I think they wont take us for granted considering how we played them last year and the C’s fans are already talking about Dray & McGee going up against a now healthy KG and how he will get big time pay back.

I think Wall is going to play and Flip will start Gil. Gil has also always played well in Boston before he got hurt. He use to drop 40 on the regular in that building. Defense is the big question. Im actually more concerned about Allen then I am Rondo. Gil has played awesome D this year but he’s always hated chasing guys off of screens and it seems to hurt him on Offense. I probably would put him on Rondo & Wall on Allen but Wall has that bad ankle so you might not want him to chase guys off screens either. You also might not want him getting hit by big guys setting picks alot. This may open up the door for Flip to again start Kirk just to guard Allen but I hope not. I want to see that Wall & Gil tandem with a motivated Dray & Al going against the C’s forwards.

This could be a classic game and I think we will play way better than everyone thinks. Unless we get blown out and then forget I said that…………..;-D

I thought everyone knew coming into the season that Gil was the best PG on the team.. Wall is very good and his natural gifts are amazing, but it will take awhile for him to get on Gil’s level. This should not be a surprise to anyone. Wall is getting heavy minutes because the team wants to move forward with Wall as the new PG and hope he will become better than Gil. He will probably never have the Offensive gifts of Gil but he may become better in just about every other aspect. Steals, defense, assist, rebounding, leadership.

Armstrong played like a MAN last night. period. Javale played well too, but Armstrong found the gaps in the defense for the easy points in the paints. Javale needs to learn those kinds of fundamentals.

Nick has proven once again that he deserves to start. I dont know how long it will take for flip to get it, but i can only hope he does sooner than later. This reminds me of when we brought in Caron Butler, but we were starting Jarvis Hayes. Caron would come off the bench and out play Jarvis every night. It seemed like it took EJ the longest time to figure out that Caron should start over Jarvis. Seems ridiculous now doesnt. Im sure thats how this will feel in a couple years..

The backboard’s job, in my opinion, is to be used in support of making a shot, not as a tool for assisting to yourself to get out of trouble.

What Kobe did was skilled, but his original intention was not to use the backboard for his “missed shot”. He knew exactly what he was doing – which was to use the backboard to basically free himself (because his pivot foot was stuck).

This is easy to answer – it’s because Jarvis Hayes was Eddie Jordan’s favorite player aside from Gilbert. It was favoritism. It had nothing to do with skill/talent.

Be aware: Hilton is getting more confident with each game and playing more intense with each game. He’s playing for a contract next year and knows that he has to become more of a force in the NBA to be recognized. This just shows that game playing time helps players to develop more quickly. I would not be surprised to eventually see him getting more minutes than Javale as the season goes on. Especially, if he is scoring more. Hopefully, Javale is recognizing this and eventually decides to improve on his offense.

Its time for the Bumble Bee to come out and sting some body! Its time for Gil to float like a butter fly and sting like a bee. The jumper is rotating smooth and soft just like when you torched Kobe and the Lakers for 55 so lets see if you can bring the energy just like before. I just hope everyone has eaten there wheaties because Boston is the best team in the league right now without Shaq ! I like to see Al Thorton explode offensively and defensively to keep the pressure off Gil. This message is for Blatche,Nick Young, Kirk, and Javale so we get out the gates early and keep the pedal to the metal we should be ok! Good Luck!

I love it that the Gilbert Fan club has woken up.
Instead of saying Hinrich should not start they have switched it to John Wall should not start (what are you guys smoking?).

You guys are hilarious!

Here is what happened on Stubhub.com when it was announced that John Wall was not playing and that Gilbert will be starting:
Are you ready for a reality check?

Lower level seating went for as low as $7.99 on stubhub.com yesterday afternoon, while upper level seating could be had for $1.99.

People want to see John Wall. Plain and simple. The Gilbert Fan Club showed up last night (it looked like alot of empty seats).

Don’t get me wrong, I want to see Gilbert do good, but to suggest that John Wall is struggling (laughable) and to compare him to Evan Turner (another joke) is humorous.
John Wall might have had a quadruple double last night against the might Raptors.

Aren’t you guys glad that Hilton Armstrong is doing so well? It is so refreshing to get a player to play so well for the Wizards so that he can take his unrestricted free agency to another team next year.

This is my main reason against the Front Office. They sign one year contracts to players but do not put in option years.
So if a player blows up, guess what? Bye bye.
If Hilton Armstrong continues to do well he will have 30 suitors, who would be more than happy, to sign a capable backup Center Big man.

You cant possibly think John Wall is a better player than Gil in this stage of his career can you? Wall is a rookie.. He does not even know enough about the NBA yet to be considered better than Gil. (what are YOU smoking?) We get the #1 draft pick and now people start going crazy.. SMH. Wall is extremely talented. and to only be a rookie, he playing out of this world. but dont get too caught up in the hype. Gil has been doing this for a long time. Gil is 1 of only two or three (cant remember which) players active in the NBA to score at least 60points in a game. He is considered the best player EVER to come out of the 2nd round in the draft. you think that a rookie is better than him after watching him play 8 games??! that is laughable!
Im sure you went out and bought your Wall jersey, Wall bobble head, Wall t-shirt, and all the other Wall collectibles out there, but he has awhile before you start saying he is better than Gil or any other established PG in the league (Rondo, Rose, D-will, Nash, CP3, etc.) He just isnt there yet. He has the talent to get there pretty quickly, but he is not yet. Get over it.

@draftazoid — Hilton Armstrong had a good game. Isn’t it just a bit of a leap from there to his having 30 suiters, etc.??

@ crozby — Hilton is getting better…? I see. He really didn’t care about his career the first 3 years he was in the league, right? Just loafing along…?

@ magicman — Nick has “proven once again that he deserves to start”… at what position? The 3 I guess — therefore over Al Thornton. Weren’t you lauding Thornton’s play just a few days ago? Neither guy is really very good night in night out.

What I think Nick *has* done, however, is earn minutes. He deserved his minutes last night, because he was pretty effective in every aspect of the game.

Tom,

I’m just saying why sign a guy for one year when you can sign him for one year plus a team option. Other teams do it all the time. The Wizards apparently do not believe in that type of contract strategy.
What if Hilton has a string of good games that last throughout the year? He will become a hot commodity because he plays Center.
It costs the Wizards ZERO to have a team option on a second year.

How was your examination of John Walls sprain?
What level of sprain was it? Was it closer to a level 1 sprain or a level 2 sprain?

So if the Team Doctor clears John Wall to play tonight, you would suggest he does not play because your expert analysis of the situation is that it is more closer to a level 2 sprain which would take longer to heal?

Is that your expert opinion Dr. Arthritic?

Nick should not start at the 3 because he is not a 3. He is a 2. and thus should start at the 2. Hinrich is playing pretty well himself, dont get me wrong. But Nick is playing better for the time he is in the game. He is better defensively at the 2 than Kirk. He is not a better defensive player. as far as fundamentals. but as we all know, you cant teach height! and Nick has not been a liability once he comes in the game. not to mention he is our best scorer. HA will hustle and bust during his last chance at a NBA career, but being on the floor with Gil will elevate his game more, as long as he plays WITH Gil. he can’t just go and do his own thing, it has to be within the confines of teamplay. If others would emulate, this team would be more than a “bottom-feeder”

I guess I reopened the “Gil and Hinrich should start and John Wall should come off the bench” wound. IMO, the Wizards are too young a team to be led by the baby of the team. The Wizards need calm, mature leadership at this stage, not a one-man-fast-break. When John is flying around the court, the game is frenzied. This team doesn’t need frenzy; it needs some stability. It needs to learn how to play winning NBA basketball. Gil and Kirk can provide the leadership to allow the team to grow and mature. While I am sure he will develop his skills, at this stage of his career, John Wall has quickness.

The people saying that we are a better starting group without Wall dont really know that because Wall hasnt had Gil beside him. If you put Gil beside Wall then Wall probably looks alot better because Gil is the natural scorer that Kirk isnt and Gil is the guy who can take the pressure off every other guy on the floor. I dont think we as fans should be trying to play them against eachother or say which one the team is better with. The whole point of everything was to have them together and try to dominate the league. Thats still my plan and the sooner the better

just make it so that neither of them has the ball in their hands too much, and when wall does use pick and rolls, and when gil does, let him iso and give him pics as well. but also don’t forget to feed the post and keep the ball moving.

they should be fine together.

John Wall traveled with the Wizards to Boston after their 109-94 win over Toronto, but it appears unlikely that he will test his sprained left foot against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday.

Wall missed the Wizards’ most complete game of the season, as they beat the Raptors in rebounding, held them to just 40.7 percent shooting and got five players to score in double figures. “It was good to see our team get a win last night…Got a tough one tonight,” Wall wrote on his Twitter account.

When someone replied to Wall and asked if the No. 1 overall pick would be good to go tonight, Wall replied, “naw.”

If there is any doubt then you hold him out until the Grizzles game

The wizards 3pt game had better be on tonight because with Shaq Diesel in the middle I would not want to get my head taken off! However if we can run grand dad a little and beat him down the court for dunks then he should gasp out for air quickly. The key is 3pt accuracy and pick and roll accurate shooting and fast breaking to take advantage of grand dad Shaq Diesel! Run Forest Runnnnn!!!!

The best starting 5 with John Wall:

PG- John Wall
SG- Nick Young/Cartier Martin
SF-Al Thornton/Trevor Booker
PF- Andre Blatche/Yi Jianlin
C- Javale McGee

Fastbreak Fever!
Run baby run. Let the slow basketball players come off the bench. If you can’t run then don’t slow down the super quick John Wall down by crawling up the court.

Just my opinion. Lol!

play UP to Wall’s level??? LMAO… what level? 8 games in the league level? 2-6 level? lets get real people. We are what our record says we are. hopefully it will improve as Wall and the rest of our young core gets better. Especially Javale. If he could play up to just 70% of his potential, we would be a contender. right now i would say he is at about 25% of what he CAN be.

Usually I bash Flip but… I would like to give him credit for this win.

1.) Less timeouts – even when we struggled this game he let us play through it

2.) I’ll assume that it was him that got through to Blatche to go down low

3.) He let Gil get comfortable and run the show when needed and didn’t allow him to over do it

Flaws:

1.) He took Blatche out soon as he got hot and it disrupted the offense and I think he did it to Gil too

2.) Let McGee play a little more – I know he was in foul trouble but hell it aint like he’s Dwight Howard. Let him play when he’s the key to our energy

3.) I initially thought kirk played too many minutes but once I looked at his numbers I had to reconsider so this is actually not a flaw.

Conclusion: Start Gil tonight with Wall and run the offense the same. And bring Kirk off the bench and let Al start because when we have no offense Al is the one who can make something happen

What do you guys think we should do defensively in the backcourt if Gil starts, no matter if the other guy is Wall or Kirk? I hear alot of people saying they would want Wall or Kirk on Rondo and I can understand that but Gil’s been a pretty good defender this year and he’s always hated chasing guys off screens. He hates it on both ends. I dont want him having to chase Allen.

I say either put Gil on Rondo or play Zone. Do that atleast until Rondo starts to kill us. Even if he does start to kill us it may be a blessing because Gil loves challanges. If Rondo starts to play great then I think Gil will go right back at him

magicman — I thought you were flying to Miami? Already there and already back on the blog? Wow.

Some real comedy on the blog lately, but today’s favorite is dlts20′s suggestion that our idea playing Gil and Wall together is/was “to dominate the league.”

We’re going to win 20+ games this year, which is I think slightly South of “dominant.”

Then there’s the idea that Nick is a defensive player on the level of Kirk Hinrich! Really funny! Nick has earned his 20 minutes a game. Lets see whether he can produce consistently in *those* minutes before we start him. Here’s a hint; he is in his 4th year, and he’s never yet performed consistently well or even consistently *average.* Lets see him get to that milestone.

I’m glad Wall is on this trip even tho he can’t play. From the bench he can study a premier point guard and take something away from that.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 17, 2010 at 6:50 PM

Back on the comic relief subject: right up there among the howlers is the notion that we need to worry about whether we have an option on Hilton Armstrong.

After all he did play well during his 16 minutes last night; he had a good outing. Against a team that basically doesn’t have a Center — their starter is terrible, and they don’t have a backup *at all.*

NBA teams typically go 3pt shooting crazy on the 2nd night of a back-to-back.

SAN ANTONIO, TX (Nov. 16, 2010) – The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have waived guard Alonzo Gee. Gee appeared in five games this season, totaling 2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks in 17 minutes.

Folks, Blatche gets the ball on offense where the coach instructs the team to give him the ball on offense. If Flip decides that ‘Dray will post up, ‘Dray posts up. If Flop decides that ‘Dray will set a screen at the 3-point line, ‘Dray will set a screen at the 3-point line. If that screen results in a pass back to ‘Dray and he is open, and Flop instructs him to shoot the open “J”, that’s where the shot will come from.

Neither ‘Dray nor any of the other players decides where they will receive the ball. That is Flop’s decision.

I don’t want ‘Dray shooting from 3-point land. Apparently Flop does. Bad decision by the coach. Let’s get rid of the bum.

I don’t think that Flop has the personality, skills, nor knowledge to coach a winning NBA team. If the Wizards want to take a bunch of young guns and develop a winning team we have to use a coach who is tuned-in to the current game, not someone who played a couple of decades ago and never at this level. Saunders is living off a record made possible by the coaches he suceeded, not by his own coaching skills.

Sure, we played one of the top teams in the East and we stank, but we also got a look at two of our draft picks:

Booker: A nice energy guy, but that’s-it, he doesn’t offer much else of anything & he’s terrible on the offensive end… no-way worth using two picks to get.

Seraphin: OMG, more raw than sushi, he looks YEARS-away from being a contributor, HORRIBLE waste of a pick at #17; more useful players were available in both rounds…even Harangody would have been more useful.

Hamady: Not even worth trotting out onto the floor (if he was available)

Ernie Grunfeld drafted Zero players that can help this team (Booker maybe, but he wasn’t worth picking that-high). Grunfeld put-together a crap team, even with John Wall available to him.

Comment from getabigboyoffense
Time November 17, 2010 at 11:39 PM

I guess that I’m the non-official Andray Blatche shill. Through the eyes of someone who thinks that Andray will be a great NBA basketball player, here’s how I see it:
(1) He currently has a serious problem with his knee. Serious enough to have him ask to be taken out toward the of the Toronto game. Has that crack Wizards medical staff taken a look at the injury?
(2) Flop is using ‘Dray primarily to set high (3-point line to top-of-the-key) screens. There is no way that he can rebound from there. Draw your own conclusions about the wisdom of a 6’11″ guy setting screens 30′ from the basket (my opinion is that it is stupid).
(3) When he, infrequently, gets the ball in the low post. he is immediately double-teamed and Flop has no movement off-the-ball. The result is Andray trying to beat a double-team by forcing a bad pass or taking a bad shot. Is this good offensive design?
(4) Andray’s responsibilities in Flop’s zone defense are essentially to defend wherever the ball is. I have seen ‘Dray go from defending the top of the key to defending the low post to defending the corner all on the same play. If you have ever had the opportunity to play the game at a serious level, you know the difficulty of rebounding from a zone defense…you just don’t know who you are responsible for boxing off the boards. You could have no one or three different players in your zone. No self-respecting NBA coach would play a zone defense.
(5) Andray has to demonstrate day-by-day that he is a force. He can’t take a minute off. Last year he was “7 Day ‘Dray”. Now I want him to be “7 Day ‘Dray – 24 hours per day”.
(6) Great players overcome adversity regardless of the form of that adversity. Illness, injury, bad coaching, bad karma, bad food, hangnail, bad luck…it doesn’t matter. If you have it, you will succeed. I believe that ‘Dray has it. I’m not sure that he believes it also.

Message to my favorite player: Suck it up every minute. As Joe DiMaggio said, there might be some kid watching him for the first and only time and he didn’t want to disappoint him, so he played he very best every single minute. You know when you give 100% every time down the court both on offense and defense. I want to see it.

I simply do not understand how Flop could so totally move away from a low-post offense that featured Andray for the last 32 games of 2009-2010 and move to that guard-oriented offense that is absolutely useless in the NBA. Most fans expected Andray to pick up where he left off last season.. His serious off-season injury aside, whatever his production is this year is the result of individual effort because Flip has determined that the low-post offense is secondary to his guard-oriented offense.

It’s tough to watch the your team roll over and expose their underbelly to the opponent. I’d rather root for a team that loses at the buzzer then what these guys are doing every other game.

Somehow, Flip does not instill any confidence in this group (except for John Wall). It looke like they went out there expecting to lose.

The defense got totally shredded tonight. What a joke! There was not a lot of teamwork on either offense or defense. Lousy defensive and offensive schemes. Flip has no answer for the constant double teams on Andray.

I agree with Gotabig about Andray. I think this guy is playing out of position at the 3 point line. He was used the right way last year, the wrong way this year. But hey, this is John Wall’s team, so everybody else step aside.

Also, because the Wiz have a soft reputation, if they play physical, the refs give them the whistle while the Celts are allowed to body check any one who takes it to the hole.

Finally, how is it that Delonte West only gets a 10 game suspension for being caught with LOADED guns (I think for the second time, too) and Gil brings in empty guns as a prank and has to sit out the entire year? It looks like that suspension has a lot of the starch out of Gil.

@ Gotabig — This statement — “I don’t think that Flop has the personality, skills, nor knowledge to coach a winning NBA team” — is ridiculous. He’s done it. He’s built a team, he’s taken a good team to the finals, etc.

And this statement — “Flop is using ‘Dray primarily to set high (3-point line to top-of-the-key) screens. There is no way that he can rebound from there” — seems to contradicts facts. Dray is 13th in the league in offensive rebounding (according to the pre-game show tonight). He doesn’t *defensive* rebound. Btw, last year he didn’t rebound either. Nor the year before. He has *never* been much of a rebounder, and it ain’t Flip’s fault.

As far as I have been able to tell over time, you have *never* allowed Andray Blatche simply to be responsible for any shortcoming he demonstrates. It’s *always* someone else’s fault. If he has a great game, you think that’s his norm. If not, it’s not on him. At least in the above, you finally suggest that maybe just maybe Dray doesn’t “have it.”

Btw, no Flip doesn’t want Dray to avoid the post. He has said repeatedly that he’s trying to get him to operate down there. And last night, for example, that’s what he did. So you think he was disobeying orders last night or what?

Comment from draftazoid

My favorite play:

Booker then rebounds it and taps it in with the left hand.

Meanwhile… lets not have yet another dispute about Dray.

Tonight we played a *much* better team than the Wizards. And that team was *on* in a big way. We hustled to keep up through about 1/3 of the game, and then they basically took us out of it in the last 5 minutes of the 2d quarter.

It happens. All the time — bad teams lose to good teams. It’s what’s *supposed* to happen.

Nick Youngs trade value just shot up tonight.
Putting 2 twenty point nights in a row with the 2nd being against the Celtics is going to have teams calling on December 15.
The day free agent contract players from this year are allowed to be traded.
He can shoot. That is a very high commodity in the NBA.

Good for Nick and good for the Wizards.
I do not expect Nick Young to be a Wizard by the new year.

We are not there yet. nor did we have Wall, Yi, or Howard. @ draftazoid — I really don’t think that the guys who make trades are like fans that look at what someone has done in the last week or so. I doubt Nick’s trade value has changed.

On the other hand, it’s great to see him shooting well. If he’d also gotten to the line, gotten more than one rebound and had some assists, it’d have been a better performance.

Another night of pretty good play from Trevor Booker. I’m hoping that by mid-season he’ll be a consistently productive player.

Seraphin got 4 rebounds in 8 minutes. Not much else good to say about his stint. Lester needs to tighten up in a hurry or he’ll be out of a job.

Dray is either slow or lazy. His CHOICE is to stay at the three point line. Once he sets a pick, he can cut to the basket or jump on the perimeter. Against Toronto, both Dray and HA cut towards the basket moreso than to the perimeter.

The alley oop dunk by KG when Dray was checking him was totally lazy. KG took the ball out of bounds parallel to the wiz’s free throw line, ran to the boston end, to the box, and cut towards the basket for the alley oop. the whole time dray stood at the free throw line, looking at rondo or dreaming about taking another three pointer….he should have been yanked out of the game, but flip called a timeout. that was nobody but dray’s fault.

He is 95% finesse, without the moves…..cmon son, you’ve been in the league long enough. this is your third contract!!!!!

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 18, 2010 at 9:40 AM

The reason i’m taxing dray is because he said he deserves a raise. He got his raise, now go prove that you belong. He’s basically our only low post threat and he is RUNNING to the perimeter. He needs to recognize his role to the TEAM and perform it.

We have enough perimeter shooters, our interior is one of our weakest spots on offense. Step up your game!!!

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 18, 2010 at 10:03 AM

where we are at, imo.

HA has proven that having the basics understood and performing them consistently, will help you stay employed in the NBA.

AB has proven that having the skillset, but not the IQ, will drive your coach insane before the season is even a quarter of the way over-with.

JM has proven that he is a gem on the defensive end of the court.

NY has proven that he has a role in the NBA, as long as he stays consistent.

Hudson has proven he may not deserve more than the chance that he now has, to prove himself NBA-”Game-time” ready.

Pretty much, you need more than the “average” nba player on your team to achieve success in this league (on a nightly basis). whatever position is your weakest, will be exploited against the “powerful” teams. We are rebuilding, but PF should be a stabile position.

Comment from crozby
Time November 18, 2010 at 10:16 AM

Dray can’t handle the ball in the low post against the better guys. Again, he is slow and his ball handling skills are not good. He is also always lost on defense. He got beat a zillion times down low last night. When you look at Kevin Garnett, you see a quicker PF with better skills.

If he hasn’t improved by January, I would say trade him.

And as far as the offense goes, here you go Neal. This was a writer’s take on Flip’s offense back in 2008 from Fantasy.com:

“One of my biggest problems with Saunders is the offensive sets he runs. They’re very complicated and deliberate only but designed to get open mid-range jumpers. It’s an odd tactic, and one that doesn’t translate well to low-scoring games or late-game situations. It isn’t designed to free up players to cut to the hoop for high-percentage layups and dunks and so it doesn’t put pressure on the opposing defense. That makes it nearly impossible to win when the team isn’t shooting well from the field. The refusal to aggressively take the ball to the basket kills his teams in the playoffs — that’s where you get star treatment for your vets and get them to the foul line. Saunders’ teams are almost always in the bottom third of the NBA in free throws attempted, and in the slowed playoff atmosphere free throws become an absolutely essential form of scoring. The offense also means that Flip’s squads don’t wear down opposing defenses in terms of personal fouls. Opposing centers and power forwards don’t get in foul trouble, aren’t forced to play tentative defense, and rarely foul out. That has come back to haunt them time and time again.”

Neal,

Whose Pecherov?
He is so insignificant in the NBA it’s like bringing up the name “Sean Marks.” (and Marks played for 10 years).
In fact, except for being a mid first round pick he is totally insignificant.

I am hoping his name never comes up again. Lol

Neal, your killing me!

“Or else, keep Yi and Blatche at PF but “tell them in a manner that they understand” to play close to the basket.”

Yes Class, we will be going to the water fountain now so please make sure you line up in two single lines. One for the boys and one for the girls.

Hey Neal,

I’m just playing with you.
These are grown men. The one thing they will respond to is if you take playing time away.

Wow crozby, Great info on flip’s offense. Before I read your post I was thinking we need someone (or more than one) player to attack the basket more and get to the free throw line. Now I know why they do it so seldom, it’s because their not supposed too!!! In Summer League & Pre-season Wall attacked the basket and got to the line at will & Gil’s game is to attack the basket (when he’s not shooting 30 feet 3 pointers) If we can incorporate that into Flip’s offense maybe we can be a decent team & not get blown out by the upper eschelon teams in the NBA. But I guess like the writer was saying from 2008 it’s hard to teach a old dog new tricks !!!

“HA has proven that having the basics understood and performing them consistently, will help you stay employed in the NBA.

JM has proven that he is a gem on the defensive end of the court.”

LOL… I keep picturing Armstrong wandering around in the lane with no idea where he needs to be and McGee trying for the steal over and over, allowing Dwight Howard the big slammah-jammah.

ericw, you seem to follow everything i say like it’s the gospel, so let me break it down…..

during the toronto game, and others, while gil is at the helm, he miraculously knew where to be to get easy baskets…..i guess it was wandering luck….

javale is still getting rebounds against boston as well as all of the other teams….so how about wandering to all of the games, rather than naming just one….and maybe it’s because JWall doesn’t really know how to run an NBA Offense, so they may look “out of position”….thanks for communicating buddy ;-)

Now Is The Time To Judge Us

In our next game we should have Wall & Yi back with Gil starting if Flip is smart. We will have our full lineup except for Howard who is a big piece but isnt playing just yet. We will finally have our real starting lineup with Gil & Thorton unless Flip figures out a way to start Kirk again. We also have some winnable games coming up. The 1st one will be real tough as Memphis has the atheletes on the perimiter to give us fits and the big guys inside that we cant matchup with.

I understand the National & even local media ripping us but I think us as fans should atleast not fully judge the team until we are close to being complete. We still wont be full go without Howard and even then we will still be much better later on when Gil & Dray get healthier & knock the rust off but I still think now you will see glimpses of more of the real Wiz. If we still continue to lose then you can rip us but I dont think you can do that until next game or maybe even the game after since this will only be our 1st game together & the Grizz have a tough lineup.

Dray made me sick last game as his effort looked like crap and he’s still taking the worst shots ever but Ill cut him some slack since he’s still coming back and keeps getting banged up in the process. Some people say that he’s been back long enough but I dont think people really realize how long it takes. You can just miss the whole Summer, play ball for a month and a half and think a guy is going to play the same he did at the end of last season. Its not enough time yet. It takes way longer then fans want to allow. Gil also made me mad again last game by making quick drives but then pulling way off the gas & finishing softly at the rim.

Im actually kinda glad that Gil lost his stroke last game because he’s the type of guy that will say that he’s going to drive more next game and stop settling. You cant complete judge the guys too bad last game because it was the 2nd night of a back to back and Boston’s defense was crazy smothering. No one else can do that. Then without Wall the last 2 games we dont get any easy or fastbreak baskets. We need him for that. Him in the full court and Gil in the halfcourt is the perfect mix and Dray will really benefit. Some say Gil has lost alot and he’s clearly lost some athletic ability but just like Dray he will look alot better each game. He really hasnt played much ball in the last 4 years. He’s going to look better every single game, espically with Wall making it easier for him.

All Im saying is that fans should stop saying that we suck, are a 20 win team, or whatever. Even Miami has looked average. We have alot of new pieces and alot of injuried players. The next game will be as complete as weve been all year. That game or the next is when you should really start to judge us and I think we will start looking alot better. A lineup of Wall, Gil, Al, Dray, & Javelle is very solid and then we come off the bench with Kirk, a hot NY, Yi, and HA. I like that mix. We will matchup way better with teams from here on out

Does it really matter if Gilbert starts?
I forgot.
He should start because we will hurt his FEELINGS.
I almost cried the last time he did not start because I was so distraught at the idea of seeing Gilberts little pouty face like someone stole his lifesaver lollipop (remember those DC!)

Then I remembered:
Wasn’t it because of Gilbert that I had to go through a crappy season last year?
Didn’t my favorite player, Caron Butler, get traded because of what Gilbert did? Not to mention Antawn.

Oh year. The money:
Did you know that Gilbert gets paid $207,317 a game whether he starts, 6th man or decides not to play?

I COULD CARE LESS IF GILBERT NEVER PLAYS AGAIN-ANYWHERE!
He is a whiny, little, primadonna who almost no one cares about, except Bloggers on this site.

As I stated 2 days ago which I find absolutely hilarious.

When it was announced on Tuesday that John Wall was not going to play BUT Gilbert Arenas will now start in his place ticket prices on Stubhub.com fell to rock bottom prices. Lower Level seats were being sold for as low as $7.99 a ticket and upper level was going for $1.99.

That is how much the average Washington Wizards fan thinks of Mr. Gilbert Arenas.

How about instead of saying “Gilbert should start or FLOP is stupd” we say:
1. Gilbert should start because he is better than Kirk.
2. Gilbert should start because he is healthy again and it will help the team.
3. Gilbert should start because Kirk will serve better coming off the bench.
OR MY FAVORITE:

4. Gilbert Arenas should start because he deserves it. He has demonstrated that he is a better Big Guard than Kirk Hinrich.

How about that type of reasoning for Gilbert starting?
