Game Day Raptors
6:50 AM EST….Dave Johnson checking in…..as we get set for a busy week starting with Toronto at home tonight and then Boston on the road tomorrow…It is life in the NBA and John Wall admitted last week playing three games in four days was a challenge for him. Wall is a game time decision tonight because of the sprained left foot suffered on Saturday in Chicago. Yi is also trying to come back from a knee bruise, but Andray Blatche did practice yesterday after being bothered by a sore knee. cross your fingers for good health. Gilbert Arenas is coming off a 30 point performance and head coach Flip Saunders noted that before the Chicago game instead of extra work he made sure all the players including Arenas got extra rest. There was only one bus to the United Center on Saturday. Usually there are two buses so some players can get to the arena early to get extra shots in. Saunders noted that when Arenas is struggling sometimes he works too hard to try and compensate. Saunders also said yesterday he has been pleased with the boost the team has been getting from the bench..now the first unit has to do a better job of closing out games. We certainly have enough injuries to go around. Wall-foot, Yi-knee, Blatche-knee. We need everyone to recover quickly and completely.
Hope that Gil is off-and-running and continues the same type of game that he displayed in Chicago.

I knew Yi was out and Blatche is questionable (which means he’ll play); I didn’t know about Wall (which is the correct decision since he was in crutches yesterday).

Thanks maggicman & bullets_fusson, I’m on facebook but barely check it anymore. I’ve found people from my past that I’m trying to lose again!!! LOL
Here’s an idea for Flip:
Since Flip is going to stick with his eight man rotation, how about every game (out of the 4 guys who aren’t in the regular rotation) pick a different guy each game and give that player a couple of min. at the end of a qt. (most likely the 2qt) That would give all the guys on the bench some badly needed experience, so if their # is called in an emergency situation they’ll be better prepared. Flip doesn’t know and us fans/supporters don’t really know the extent of everyone’s playing ability/skills if they don’t play. There are a lot of player in the league who have thrived or were exposed once they got playing time. At least we would know what’s on our bench and we wouldn’t have so many questions of why a guy isn’t playing. That would give Flip the chance to evaluate there talent in a real game situation and not just garbage time & in practice.
P.S….. Glad to see your back Neal!!!

I don’t own a television so I usually go over to my parents’ to watch the game. Since Wall and Yi and possibly Blatche are out I don’t think the trip is worth it.
The only enticing thing would be to really watch Booker and Seraphin in some serious minutes so I could converse with certain bloggers who think the bench players are better than Blatche… I think the stats will be enough though.

I find it strange that Gils injury kept him out until we played the Knicks who are a team that would be interested in trading for him since they only got one big free agent this summer and they have Eddy Currys huge expiring contract.
I find it strange that Wall had a boot on last week after spraining his ankle and then had a tripple double and now this week he has a boot on for the same injury but this time he won’t play. Coincidently it is the game after Gil broke out and went for 30.
Smells alot like, “hmmmmmmmmm Gil just went off for 30 and Wall is a little hurt, maybe we will just sit him to rest and give the team to Gil for a game to see if he can showcase his talents so we can start getting some phone calls for his services”
I want Gil to stick around but I call it like I see it.

I’m OK now, thanks to my pain pills. They ended up fusing 4 vertebrae. I’m told it will not affect my typing, however.
I think 50 years from now the experts will have guidelines on the max amount of stress athletes and athlete wannabes should put on different parts of their bodies over the course of a lifetime.

glad to hear you are doing well Neal, BE CAREFUL with those pain killers. It only takes 2 weeks to become dependant on percoset and oxycodone. I went through withdrawal after my post surgery recovery. If you live in DC I would highly recommend getting a prescription for medicinal cannabis, it works just as well for the pain if not better and you won’t go through any withdrawal

The only thing I like about the injuries as a Wiz fan is that Gil will finally get to start and Im sure that once he starts, he will stay the starter. If Wall played then our idiot coach would probably still bring Gil off the bench for awhile. Not only does he bring him off the bench but he treats him like a regular bench player and brings him in with only like 2min left in the quarter. You can tell that it makes him nervous & throws his timing off, espically at home.
As a Wiz fan I think we will still win “if” Gil is right and thats a big if. He still seems nervous & scared at home while he also has a mental hurdle of attacking the rim hard & jumping high in the air. He’ll miss 9 out of 10 layups now. You could argue its because of injury but I think alot of it is mental and he just has to be pushed to jump as high as he can at the rim. However, I think being a starter will help in all of that.
The one problem is that he will probably play alot of PG without Wall. The Wiz fans who do want him to come off the bench for a few more games and some local media see one problem as that Gil has struggled off the ball but been dominant with the ball in his hands. Thats a bad thing when you have him & Wall. I dont feel that way. I think it just seems like that because Gil is off the bench but if they both started then they could both have the rock enough to be happy & both clearly will help the other. We were dumb in the Preseason when Flip started Gil, Kirk, & Wall. I didnt like it because its too many ball handlers and its another guy to take the ball out of the hands of Wall & Gil but just those 2 togehter will be fine

After reading what dlts20 said above, I’m confused. Why are we still worried with Gilbert playing? Hasn’t he shown this season that he’s still one of the 3 best players on the team?
I was never worried he won’t start. He’ll have to start in due time because he’s obviously better than Hinrich. When he’s slimmed down a bit (he literally looks like a potato with a Brazilian butt sticking out from behind), he should be more explosive and more dangerous – like the 2-guard role he should now be playing as.
I’m more worried about Booker, and Nick Young not playing at all and McGee playing way less than he should be (when he’s not in foul trouble). I think Young is done in DC as long as Flip is in charge – he’s in the doghouse and he’ll never be a consistent rotational player. Young is “too floaty” for Flip. Arenas, although in a strange way, basically told us the truth with Nick when he lied about his injury to get Nick playing time. Not playing Booker is as stupid as not playing Blatche and Wall when they’re healthy. In the limited time Booker has played, he’s done well. And with JaVale – I have no idea what the team wants him to be. If he’s not starter material, then don’t start him! Don’t patronize and disrespect him by playing him only 22 minutes a game when he’s got only 1 foul.

DJ,
Gilbert and Hinrich form a very experienced back court.
That is a very different control of the game than when John Wall is in.
I don’t think the team is used to the fast, up and down of Wall yet.
This game to me shows the more experienced, albeit slower, back court is more comfortable for the team right now than John Wall’s flying ball game.

The only bad thing about this game is how great Kirk played. Despite how good Gil looked, Kirk played so well that Flip may still keep starting him. I hate Flip because its like he’s making some fans root against Kirk when he’s actually playing really well. Just put him on the bench like he was supposed to be. If Flip puts Gil back on the bench when Wall comes back or goes 3 small guards again, then I will kill him

Fun game to watch. We were lackadaisacal on D at first. Fortunately, so were they. OK, presuming Thornton starts at the 3, who do you like at primary back-up? Young? Booker? Martin? In case you don’t know, don’t worry. Be happy. Neither does Saunders (neither do I).

Slick seems to have gotten gradually a little better as a shooter off the bench. And he is finally improving the other parts of his game a bit.

What a fun game tonight!! And very good play from so many guys.
Dray played a terrific game. JaVale was awfully good too — and should have gotten another 7 minutes, except that when Armstrong came in he played great, so why take him out?!
Props to Nick for excellent play as well tonight. Rebounding, defense and good shooting. Keep it up, kid!
Booker played very effectively. And Monsieur Seraphin got his first NBA points!!
And an excellent game from Gil, who seems incredibly relaxed and in control on the floor. Ditto Kirk.

I would just like to give a shout out to Javale Mcgee for being aggressive on the boards. He has picked it up in the trenches and thats saying something. I could see him getting double doubles every night with 3 or 4 blocks to go along and maybe even a steal if he wants to! He has come a long way and I just want to give him so appreciation!

The Wizards controlled the game from the start with great defense. There was a lot of energy and no quit. IMO, the game was won because of the solid floor play of Kirk and Gil. Both of these guys know how to control the game. Neither is as quick as John Wall, but both can handle the ball, pass well, and score. Kirk is a solid one-on-one defender; Gil is an aggressive ball-hawk. The game is not as herky-jerky with Kirk and Gil handling the offense. Gil also attacked the basket for the first time this season.
We got solid games from Slick and ‘Dray. Slick shot the ball very well, but, more importantly, he is playing very solid “D”. He also had 6 boards. ‘Dray played in control; took the ball to the hole, and also played solid “D”. Several times he simply tipped the ball to a Wizard and didn’t get credit for a rebound. Al is forcing things, but he’ll be fine. JaVale disruptes the heck out of the opponent’s offense with his shot-blocking and shot-altering defense. He’s a force. He hit a really nice sky hook and kept the ball active off the boards.
Armstrong and Booker contributed some good minutes.
Can’t wait for Josh to be back and at speed.

I would really like to see Gil and Kirk start and John Wall come off the bench until John gets about 40 games under his belt. Kirk and Gil have a calming effect on the team. They project leadership. They control the flow of the offense. John’s style is more kamikaze-like. It’s all or nothing. He needs to learn how to be a NBA point guard. John is a developing talent. I believe that he will be a tremendous asset to the Wizards, but it is hard for someone two years removed from high school to be asked to lead a NBA team. Everyone expected the guy to be Magic Johnson from day one. That’s not the case. In addition to being exceptional, Magic also had an additional year of college play before he entered the NBA. I realize that the Wizards are “rebuilding”, but forcing this kid to be the cornerstone of the franchise at this stage of his career is simply not fair to him or his teammates.

Everyone looked good tonight. Even Hilton was a Beast. The only really significant change I saw was the same change all the rest of you saw. Gilbert being the “on court” Gilbert. He was instrumental in every play offensively.
I think Nick is really starting to get “it”. Yes he shot lights out but before that’s all he did. Now he plays good in your face defense and word has it he is fighting for rebounds.
Al Thornton was a bust “with the Clippers”. Who is “this” Al Thornton? Don’t care… I’m liking his play… A Lot.
Dray was obviously hurting, but, didn’t seem to matter much. That guy has matured before our eyes in the last year.
I forget what little guard tried to foul Booker and keep him from making a layup. He bounced off Booker like he was a bug hitting a windshield. Booker made the layup like he wasn’t even there. I like it

Hilton Armstrong played well. I liked how he would set a good screen and then quickly move to the basket in a bee line and received a nice pass from Hinrich for an easy flush. What about that hard slam in the 3rd quarter off a missed shot by Booker – that was like Dwight Howard lol.
Raps are as bad as the Wiz, thus winning tonight is nice but typically not the norm.
There is no need to rush Wall tomorrow against the C’s, although I’m sure the entire NBA would love to see Rondo vs. Wall (aka diming machines) and Garnett vs. Blatche (e.g., an heir apparent?), and Arenas vs. Allen (e.g., don’t blink, i’ll shoot).

Ok this is maybe a little out there, but with Wall hurt, I wouldn’t mind seeing the starting backcourt of Gilbert and Cartier. With Gilbert’s “new found defense” and Cartier’s “always defense” along with them both looking to drive, shoot, and rebound (ok so Gilbert has it over Cartier in assists lol) it may not be the worst backcourt until Wall gets back. Kirk showed us tonight he can run the point effectively. Great for 1st point off the bench. He played well with Nick tonight. Kirk and Nick first off the bench?

Although the Celtics beat the Wizards three times, it was never really easy, and the Wizards even picked up a win over Boston in early April, an ugly 106-96 loss for the Celtics.
That, Washburn said on Tuesday’s NESN Daily, should be enough to get the Celtics ready to go against an inferior opponent on Wednesday night.

Interesting proposal. I think Lester Hudson would cause Pierce more havoc than Cartier because of his in-your-face defense. But since Lester has little experience with Flip compared with Cartier, Cartier will get minutes first over Lester. Pierce will use his veteran knowledge and pump fake the heck out of the Wiz and draw fouls while the defender jumped in the air and crashes onto Pierce.
Speaking of pump fakes, Bargnani got the Wiz to get jumpy with his pump fakes earlier tonight. Another thing to correct for the team.

think that despite the salaries they might demand; the expectations and adulation they get from the fans; and the excitement that they provide, we should try to remember that, for the very most part, the Wizards team is composed of very young adults who have tremendous potential, but who also do some very stupid things (none of us can deny that a certain level of stupidly is provided free-of-charge at that age…in fact, most of us would honestly wonder how we survived that age.) The majority of these young men have never received the slightest bit of negative feedback since they were the “golden boys” wherever they played. They were always the best on the team, the best in the league. Personally, I am going to try to limit my complaining about players to those over 29 years-old (I think when you hit 30, you deserve anything you get), and try to provide constructive criticism to those under 30. Coaches, of course, are all, and always, considered fair game.

Gil Is Good But Could Be Great If……
he got over the mental hurdle of finishing at the rim. He’s doing every single thing else way but from a scoring standpoint he is still dependant on his jumpshot. He’s not getting to the line, isnt attacking the rim as much as he should, and when he does he either passes or doesnt go as hard which makes him miss or not get the call. Now you can talk about the injuries and he’s obviously not the same athelete as he was but its still not an excuse because he is far from a gimp. Its all mental.
1st off think about all the Offseason stories about Gil playing with All Stars, looking unstoppable, driving to the rack non stop, and having numerous dunks. We always chalk it up to just Offseason street ball but I dont think thats the case anymore. I see a few signs that suggest otherwise. 1 is that his touch around the rim is back. The shot isnt going in but its very soft now. The last couple of years he was badly missing layups and the shot would hit hard off the backboard every single time. Now they are softly just spinning out.
The other thing is that he’s getting more & more burst every game. He’ll never be what he was or be a John Wall but these last few games and the Raptors game in particular, I saw some plays where he looked mad quick driving the ball but he rarely looked for the rim or took off alot of gas when he got there. Last but not least and the main reason why I feel that its mental is because of his rebounding. Have you been watching him? Forget the numbers he’s getting but look how he gets them. He’s getting way up. He’s jumping over 7 footers alot of times. He’ll come through the crowd with no worries and sky up for a board, yet on the Offensive end he’s timid at the rim & barely leaves the ground. That crap is mental.
Gil got 20 tonight and played a very good all around game but that shouldve easily had been a 30pt game and dont tell me that its better for him to do all around stuff. He can do both, just like Wade or whoever. Im just saying that it shouldve been 30 because if he attacks more & goes to the rack like he goes for boards then he’s back to getting to the line 8 times per game, espically with Wall pushing the rock. Not only that but the guy is literally probably P4P the strongest guy in the league right now. Look at him going for boards or look at him when he drives & bumps into someone. No one is stronger. He’s mad powerful and guys are bouncing off him.
You get Howard back & coming off the bench while getting Dray more healthy then this team is very good if Gil just adds that final mental hurdle and yes it is mental. He gets that back and he will look unstoppable out there. Just throw caution to the wind Gil and go at the rack, jump high like you do on the boards, and try to finish. Its all mental. Dont get it twisted though. I know its early and he’s just getting back so he can definetly get there but someone just needs to tell him about it also. He can do it, easily

Last game we lost it was all doom an gloom this game we win everyone is happy lol i think the wizards blog is bipolar! but good game alot better at moving the ball and getting a much better effort from a Winded McGee AB doing some nice work shooting a good % Nick doing a good job off the bench and has been for a few games witch is a very good thing.. gil back to the guy who can hit it when you need it but still not pushing as said ^dlts20^ Al still playing well Booker was better than i thought witch begs the question why has he been on the bench so long? but other than that i don’t think one player on the Wizards had a bad game and everyone passed the ball to the open man till the 4th qt anyway

I believe Booker got to play the last 2 games because Yi got hurt.
Flip appeared to be set with a 9 man rotation and Booker did not make the cut.
In sports, just like in life, when opportunity comes knocking at the door you better be able to answer the bell.
I think Booker has taken advantage of his opportunity.

Ok Hilton Armstrong had a career performance but I maintain that on a normal night we are much better with him out of the game.
Hopefully Booker being better than Blatche talk is over now since he got 2 rebounds in 20 minutes. That being said, Booker had a much better offensive game than I expected. It’s obvious Blatche was a huge part of this win.
Great to see a big-time performance from Nick Young.

@ Gotabig — I’m with you on everything you’ve said in this thread. About the game, about Wall, about remembering that these players are basically kids most of them.
All the same, I don’t think Wall will be coming off the bench. And, although we *certainly* looked like a much more confident, organized team last night than we have in any game so far this season, it is still hard to judge off of one game especially vs. a pretty bad team.
Despite all that, great to have the win and look so good too! Props to all — bloggers too!

They should let John Wall get the rest he needs! Same with Andray and Yi for that matter. We haven’t seen anything from Seraphin and Hudson yet, so give those guys a chance while the others heal! I’m sure the team will play hard with those two guys in.
