One more day until our Home Opener!
Can’t wait.

Since we mentioned Hakeem in the last post.

Hakeem Olajuwon’s most significant contribution to basketball is that the basketball world adopted his illegal move to a legal move.
His signature “jump step” is now recognized as a legal move from High School to the Pros.

It is significant because he made a legal way to use “3 Steps” instead of the 2 that had been on the books since the beginning of the rules of basketball.

A tidbit from Draftazoid the high school basketball referee.

Comment from dcbutler357

wow, if that ain’t “hating”. All of this because Howard wants to get better down low….lol….cmon zoid, that’s just to much energy expended that could have been used promoting the good of mankind….LOL…

meanwhile, after you come down off of the “moon dust”………what do you deem to be the key(s) to our current active players?

Comment from draftazoid
Time November 1, 2010 at 9:40 AM

Why is that hating on Hakeem?

That is a significant contribution to basketball. I know he won a couple of championships (thanks to Jordan playing baseball).
But his jump step will be with basketball forever.
I still cannot believe that High School basketball changed their rules allowing the jump step a few years back.
That is a heck of a contribution.
No hate. Just a fact.

Comment from draftazoid

The key to our active Roster is that we gut the “cancers” on the team.
We all know who they are. I don’t want to dwell on it.

Hopefully, these “cancers” can grow up and act like “MEN.”
If they do then I can see us having a successful season.
Dcbutler, you asked.

We wont win to many games with our offense this bad. Its not the players, its the offense they are running.. It looks like they are just out there running around, like a pick up game. There is no flow to it. That is Flip’s job. the ball just goes to the best shooter on the floor at the time, everyone clears out, and watch to see if he can get a basket. last i checked, we didnt have Lebron, we cant play that kind of basketball. If Wall didnt take over the game late and do his thing, we would been blown out AGAIN.

but losses like the one in Orlando remind me of how valuable Gil is. cud he have won the game for us? probably not. but it would have been a different game. Players respect Gil’s shot as well as his quickness. Gil knows how to split defenders and get to the rim better than just about any PG in the NBA. Wall will have to learn these thing if he is to become as good a PG as Gil is. And if you think Wall is a better PG than Gil right now, you know nothing about basketball.

Comment from dcbutler357

LOL…The way things are going, i think none of us know anything about basketball…lol

The more we voice our opinion, the more the team goes in the opposite direction (in regards to the level of play). We are not on the same page as the organization. Can we get a clue please?!?!? our intent is to get another #1 pick, not to win games…lol

Okay, all jokes aside, can we go and show Philly why we have the best pick in the land tomorrow?

I want to know if Gil is playing tommorow night also since he is the missing link and we can not be judged as a team until he plays.

jordan created the forearm shiver which was only allowed to be used by him on lesser inferior athletes who he didn’t need any more of an advantage on.

Hakeem would have still won one of the 2 championships if jordan had stayed and it wouldn’t have been with Clyde Drexler. Do you really think Bill Cartwright Scott Williams Bill Wennington and Stacey King could have guarded Hakeem????? even if you tried putting Horace Grant or Rodman on him they would have been too short.

I am looking for Andray and Javale to dominate tonight.
Philly has got to have the worst front court in the NBA.

Elton Brand- hurt all of last year and 2 years ago only average 13 points and 6 rebounds.
Spencer Hawes- hurt all of last year also and averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds 2 years ago.

@dcbutler — re: level of play. We got *a lot* better in game 2, didn’t we? We played a very good team on their home court and played them tough.

As you know I don’t think we’ll win many games, we just don’t have the horses. But we can be competitive on any given night and even win on any given night.

Looking forward to the Sixers game tomorrow!

With augustine getting 5 assists per night and playing 40 minutes that may not last long. Plus they are 0-2, coach brown won’t let that play out for long, or jordan is going to get a new coach.

something is going to change in that house.

Comment from dcbutler357

Hello Tom,

Yeah we did. one thing to be careful of. I know Gil was a combo guard and JWall will have to do the same thing sometimes, but if your point guard has to look to score, moreso than set up their team mates, you’re really not going to be too successful. Charlotte 0-2, augustine avg 20+/5 assists, and he’s the point? 5 assists in 40 minutes….cmon son

This is where the foundation for the home stand begins.
The house of cards has to have a sturdy foundation to stand under the turmoil and pressure! We only have 42 chances to make this reality happen and it all starts with our big men acting like big men! Once we control the trenches we can branch out on the perimeter. We have excellent high screen and pop players such as Kirk,Nick,Wall and Agent 9 to do damage. Coach should have 12 hot pick plays to use at his disposal to take advantage of these highly proficient mid-range players! The three point specialist are Martin,Young,Wall and Agent 9 when the defense wants to stay in the box close to the basket! Fast breaking should be our most prized secret and used all the time with the speed we have, so I expect Wall to be full metal jacket toward the basket all the time!
We have no excuse for not taking a win and finishing the games just like in the first three preseason games. A win is a win no matter how ugly it may become so we fans desire it and would really appreciate it! My player of the game could very well be Lester Hudson because when microwave catches fire he is unstoppable! Good Luck!!

No way. People keep overreacting. He obviously has a real injury. What team is going to take Gil’s contract with the way he’s been acting, and in a walking boot? He’s here atleast until he looks like a stud because no one will take him otherwise. The injury is legitimate but our training staff just sucks. There was very little chance that he was going to be ready by tomorrow. You might as well keep him out until our next home game on Saturday or the following game on Wednesday. He will only have missed 4 or 5 games. Its no big deal

@ Mr. Know It All

I’d say comparing me to draftazoid is a compliment. Thank you.

You have completely missed my point with Mike Brown. And you actually used examples to support my point.

When the 97-99 Wizard had nobody worthy to remember, Mike Brown’s defense stunk.

When he went to the Pacers, Spurs, and Cavs, they had players that were very good defensively and thus executed his systems very well. Hello, Tim Duncan in his prime?

If Mike Brown came back to Washington TODAY and tried to execute his plans (as head coach, as assistant – doesn’t matter), the team’s defensive stats will stink again. Do you know why? Because this team doesn’t have any notable defensive players except McGee (and that’s a stretch for me to say).

Comment from bullets_fusion
Time November 1, 2010 at 2:53 PM

And before anyone claims that Mike Brown was the sole reason on getting the Spurs a championship with his *defense* and whatnot, let me just say that the Spurs won it before he came along (in 1999) and after he left (in 2005).

In addition, if the Wiz had players like a LeBron (on defense), Varejao, and Larry Hughes, then maybe Mike would generate a better record than Flip.

Comment from bullets_fusion
Time November 1, 2010 at 3:02 PM

I’m very pumped for tomorrow’s game. Any *negative* news on Gil is going to be put on a back burner for now.

I noticed that both Elton Brand and Thaddeus Young are playing well. Blatche better play as well or else it could be a long night.

Wall may not be able to “out-speed” the PGs on the other side. Lou “Dub” and Jrue are darn fast too.

Wall and Griffin have had at least 1 bad shooting game and 1 good shooting game. Turner did well in his debut (against Miami no less) and then had 2 forgettable outings. I’ll not be surprised if Turner plays well.

Comment from Tom Mandel

I would think it is more the players he had (Duncan, Bowen, Stephen Jackson, Malik Rose, and David Robinson) that cared to play defense.

If I walked into the Wizards practice court and started to preach the exact same Spurs defense from 2002-03, the Wiz wouldn’t become the “opening day Celtics for this season” overnight.

Mccgee is a mental defensive player. He blocks shots yes.. but like you said tom, most of those blocks go back to the other team. however, he makes guards think twice before taking the ball inside. Of course that was not the case against orlando as they performed their layup drill on our team, but thats what he did against ATL.

unfortunately, “mental defense” will not win many games. and big guys are not intimidated by mccgee at all. they are constantly trying to muscle him in the low post. If i may quote waka flocka, He needs to go hard in the @$#&*($@ paint! lol

I really don’t need anyone to co-sign anything for me. I think it’s pathetic for mgmt to keep placing the majority of it’s success in a man that not only hasn’t played in three years, but also isn’t grateful for what the organization has done for him. This guy is such a “headcase” it’s about time the organization offers to buy him out and moves on. Yes, he can play ball, but you get out of going to jail and the first thing you do is lie, so that another team mate can play during the pre-season. What a freaking joke. The boy that cried wolf was written for a reason. Again, YES he can ball, but at what point do you stop sacrificing the team for a clown. Get what you can and move on, we’re rebuilding anyway, we don’t need him.

Comment from tyrone2000

That has been the thinking in Washington basketball and a huge part of the organization loser mentality. Get rid of the best player on the team if it is perceived by certain people as politically incorrect. If the Lakers had parted ways with Kobe during his poor decisions, would they had won a title? Same thing with Paul Pierce. Players are human and are not above human issues and problems. Once the organization stop shipping the issues out just to be politically correct than they can start building a championship contender. When Mr. Pollin got Weber out of town they never recovered until Gilbert Arenas, Jamison, Hughes, Haywood, and Stevenson hit the floor some 7years later. If Arenas wants out that would be a different situation, but to ship him out just because you don’t like how he acts is totally ridiculous. Washington NBA franchise will always be below mediocre until they take care of those issues in house.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time November 1, 2010 at 8:14 PM

Not a good comparison. Gilbert has continuous bad decisions, and he hasn’t delivered ONE championship. He hasn’t even gotten us to the finals. VERY BAD comparison. We aren’t talking about Pierce, we arent talking about Weber, we are talking about an immature person that has yet to apologize to the fans, the organization, no one and has already created confusion. He wants out, it’s just that his salary is too large. As soon as he’s back he’ll say something else ridiculous and we’ll say, “it’s just Gilbert”. It ain’t even about politics, its about an idiot that needs pschological help. His only savior is basketball. what is he going to do once the lights are out and his career is over? he needs to get help while he still can. I feel sorry for the kid. Money can’t buy you a brain, but it can buy one that helps cure your illness.

It’s not about how he acts, it’s about him damaging the team with his antics, GET A CLUE.

For those that play fantasy basketball on yahoo, you better read what your favorite center from the DC area did this off-season (no, I’m not talking about McGee. I’m talking about Hibbert).

Roy Hibbert lost weight and improved on his patience in the low post. I think most that follow him knew that.

But did you know his mentor was Bill Walton, a very good big man during the 70s before foot problems derailed his career?

So, dcbutler mentioned Dwight Howard working with Olajuwon (HoFer) in the summer. And Hibbert worked with Walton (HoFer) in the summer. And McGee worked with Team U.S.A. and got cut, not once, but twice — and then he worked with his mom.

Since I’m so smitten with Wall, I’ll save my pennies and get the creme de la creme authentic later this season. Paying $250 for a non Mitchell & Ness throwback jersey is insanity, but if Wall’s going to stay awhile, I’m cool. It probably beats buying the Kinect or something stupid like that from Microsoft.

I see this coaching thing we’ve been discussing is going nowhere. One reason I know it’s going nowhere is because I said your starting to sound like Draftazoid & you took it as a compliment!!!
You feel like you have a point, I feel like you have no point. My comparition of Brown is to Flip as a head coach but you keep referring to what Brown did as an assistant?(Which by the way is pretty stellar!!!) Here’s some news for you…….. Brown’s Head coaching record is pretty stellar too.
You focused on one instance that was over ten years ago while Brown was still in a learning process. You can’t just say he stunk in Wash then overlook what he did with the Spurs & Pacers.(By the way both of those teams he helped coach in Washington had winning records) But that’s beside the point. The point is he has a better resume than Flip and your original question was…… “If Flip Saunders is so bad for the Wizards, then who do you suggest as a replacement that is available” …….I’ve given you my answer & it was a darn good one (I kept it clean SportsWiz)
Brown has the experience of building a team around a young superstar (Lebron) Which would be very similar in what we have here in DC with Wall. As far as Defense goes, I know you didn’t bring up Larry Hughes (that name sounds familiar, Oh yeah! we had him her already) That’s the best you could do? Larry Hughes playing time was spotty at best & Varejao or should I say King of the Flop! (and I’m not talking about his hair) Was never a shot blocker or great defender, he’s just annoying.
Trust me Brown’s Defense wasn’t anchored around those two. Oh & don’t think I forgot Lebron. He’s just recently coming into his own as a defender. He only has the one move where he chases you down from behind and blocks your shot.
And last I checked Cleveland didn’t have Tim Duncan either, but managed to somehow become a great defensive team. Cleveland didn’t have any great shoot blockers on those teams, which in the Wizard case we do. (well not great yet, more like up & coming. (Javale had 7 blocks vs. the Hawks) With all the info I’ve given you , I probably still haven’t changed your mind so I just have a peace offering to you……… there’s a bridge in Brooklyn I’m trying to sell, slightly used…… So how much you want for it ?

But all jokes aside bullets_fusion or Fusey as they call you. My real peace offering is that, If my predictions of wins (35) comes out in the “Let’s Win Neal’s Money” game I’ll donate my winnings to you or a charity of your choice.
