@ Dunked…. are you really thinking you need to decrease him minutes already? we aren’t even through the preseason. he’s what 20 years old. I think he can take the minutes. getting hurt isn’t based on the number of minutes you play. Gil got hurt playing 3 minutes of a game. Should he have just played 2 and he’d be ok?

I want John Wall to play 48 minutes a game.
I would settle for 38 minutes a game.

He’s a basketball player. He would play basketball whether there was a game or not.

As long as they don’t treat him like they treat these wimply Major League Baseball pitchers. Watch his innings. Like they watched Strasburgh’s innings. What good did that do the Nationals.

Did you see the Texas Rangers pitching staff. Nolan Ryan has no such thing as a “pitch count” for his pitching staff. They play as long as they can go. Just like old school baseball where pitchers like Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan would pitch complete games. They train their bodies to go the distance.

I’m sorry, i’m just going to be the grumpy ole man for a while.

I’m just not comfy handing JWall the ball and having him use his talents to get or raise our team to the next level. I want to see a total team effort in atleast one game before the season starts, which means there are at least two passes to the low post or the resemblance of a team effort. This perimeter team is irritating.

Also, i’m okay with the three guard line-up for a distinct purpose (i.e. to raise the tempo, or press a team), but to make it the norm, is a bit much.

@dcbutler…. it’s preseason., the team won’t truely know who they are till after like 20 real games. this is the time to work on and work out issues. We all want a winner, and so does coach and players. They are working on it.

@reddog271, as i have stated before, begin as you plan to proceed. Put the players in position to become successful. This is currently setup to promote one or two people. Preseason is the time frame to establish the foundation. If what we have been doing is what we will be doing 20 games into the season, we are definitely trying to get another lottery pick.

DC.. I dont’ think so, they team isn’t even full strength. they aren’t playing with all of thier pieces. But they are playing hard and haven’t looked too bad when the regulars have been in games. But I guess we’ll see. here’s to us both being wrong and them coming out strong game 1

The main reason I would NOT start at the small forward position Al Thornton, Cartier Martin, Trevor Booker or any other so called small forward on the team is that they DO NOT DESERVE TO BE A STARTER.

Until one of these guys seperates himself as a starting small forward I would continue to start Kirk Hinrich as a 3rd guard.
Maybe these guys would work alot harder to be able to improve and EARN a starter spot.
I am glad someone is not handed the job just because it would be nice to call someone a starting small forward.

Flip said that he is giving Wall alot of minutes right now because he’s a rookie and he wants him to hit the ground running when the season starts.

As for the 3, I will say that I think all our Wiz fans underrate Al. I think he’s played well every single time he stepped on the court this Preseason but it goes unoticed.

As for my prediction on opening night starters, I just dont know because we havent played hardly any healthy games. Gil’s only played like 3, Al like 2, and no Josh. I really dont want Kirk to start because I think it may be too short and its too many ball handlers. I want Gil to have the ball more.

However, Kirk has been great and Flip may want to start him for the matchups. I say that because Gil can guard Q and Kirk can guard VC. If Howard is healthy though, I may start him even without playing any

and what exactly has heinrich done to separate himself from the pack? Because he’s a vet? If Flip was playing the best players on the team, he may end up with 5 guards on the floor….He’s not a three. and McGee is important, but not the deciding piece to the team.

If I was running the team Carmelo would be our starting SF (I would trade everyone for him except John Wall and Javale).

John Wall playing 48 minutes a game was a joke. Sorry. I do see him playing 38 minutes a game, just like Lebron, Kobe and Dwade.

For NBA basketball I do not subscribe to the “let him sit and learn.” I subscribe to the let him play and “dunk on ‘em” philosphy.

draftazoid you really do want to get Flip fired. His placing Kirk Hinrich in the starting lineup during pre-season is an experiment.
He may be able to get by on opening night with Kirk checking Quentin Richardson of the Magic for a little while but not game in and game out.
For you to say AT, TB and CM don’t deserve to start at SF means you must have had to much energy drink today.
Starting the season the ideal scenario is to have AT at the 3 matching up with Q Rich. When Orlando brings Ryan Anderson and Brando Bass off the bench there is no way Kirk will be able to match up with those players. So AT, Yi or TB will be there.
Furthermore placing Kirk in the lineup at the 3 will make him subsceptible to early foul trouble. We need Kirk to come off the bench and spell JWall or Gilbert. At certain times they can play the three of them together. But not as part of the starting team. That might work well in college but not in the NBA.
I believe AT deserves a better opportunity from Flip than to set him on the bench. Why did we bring him here? He did not play that many games with us last season. He lost weight like the coach asked him to. As proven with AB and Javale getting more minutes we don’t know good a player is going to contribute unless they get the playing time.

Al Thornton is a better player than some are making him out to be. Besides this year is a year where some players won’t be back next year if they don’t perform to the best of their abilities.
The same can be said about Flip if he does not coach this team effectively. He won’t be back. All we have to do is give it some time and the hand will play itself out.

AT doesn’t deserve to be a Starter. He must go out there and kick everyones behind that’s challenging him for the spot.
So far, he has not done that. I don’t want him to start unless he is the best for the job.

Kirk Hinrich is an awesome defender. Former All NBA defender. He can hang with the small forwards for 5 minutes at the beginning of the game.
His being named a Captain will defeinitely mean he will be starting, at least in the beginning of the season.

Just because they start 3 guards in the beginning of the game does not mean they will play 3 guards for the rest of the game. I don’t see that.
5 minutes tops.

Little know fact: In every preseason game thus far, we have had a better fieldgoal percentage than the opponent, except in the loss to Chicago. Even in the other two losses (Milwaukee and N.Y.), we shot the ball better. This is encouraging.

This season for me comes down to McGee, Wall and Blatche if they can be consistent we will be a playoff contender this year!

I do not see a 3 guard lineup starting on opening night, but I can see Thorton getting the shot to open the season at SF with Yi first off the bench to give a big line up at times with Blatche and McGee

Don’t be surprised if NY gets some playing time this year. his leash will be short and he will get pulled as soon as he starts getting beat on D, forgetting where to be on the court, and forcing fade away bricks. He showed in pre-season that he can still get a hot shooting streak which will get him time when the starters are having bad shooting nights.

Dray’s rebounding right where it has been over his career. McGee’s rebounding *way up*.

Cartier Martin is shooting *great*. Arenas has been our best player. Yi is better than regular season last year as a Net (not the same as “good”), but we don’t know what that means for regular season performance.

I got that feelin JWall will have his best preseaon game tonight. I think one key to see is to have Javale become more aggressive offensively. Against Orlando the key will be to get Superman in FT, The more freedom he has defensively the more dangerous he will be on the offensive end. So we must be the aggressors with our speed and youth,

Tom I agree with you that Slick will get more PT. The key will be can he come in and not be so anxious to shoot but get involved in other aspects of the game. He needs to be a little unselfish and show he can see the whole floor. Good and great basketball players know how to let their game come to them. A real key in our rebuild must be WE and not ME when the players work on their chemistry.

I agree with JWALL. I believe that Morrison and Hudson will make the team if we only keep two. So far I see Booker as just a bigger D. McGuire…lots of hustle, no punch. Given the option, I would keep Martin over Booker (Yes, I know I probably don’t have that option, but, maybe I do. We could just cut Booker and pay him).

Actually, Booker has some positive things going for him. Those things should be developed in, where else…the Developmental League. He should be joined there by N’Diaye and Seraphin.

John you need to learn how to play NBA “D”…a little humility would go a long way also.

Flip, give this kid some breathing room. Telling the world that he is too quick for the officials to see that he isn’t turning the ball over is not helping his standing with the other NBA guards. They can’t wait to get a shot at him. Not fair to him. You’re making him a target. Nice coaching.

It seems he has played great in the preseason but the Wiz have alot of players who can play the 2.

Would like to have seen the game, but I’m not too worried by the fact that we lost. We played a lot of guys who won’t get minutes when a game is on the line, some of whom won’t be on the team at all.

From the boxscore, I have to give some props to JaVale of whom I’ve been critical. He has been active and productive. Much better rebounding than last year, and certainly much better shot selection. When I’ve seen him, he’s shown improvement on defense as well; only 1 foul tonight, and that’s a sign of better defensive play.

Nick made some shots, but he did nothing else — no rebounds, no assists — and turned it over a couple of times, with the result that overall he didn’t help.

Thornton has demonstrated to me that he can’t play. I don’t get him at all. He seems bright; he is obviously pretty athletic. Why can’t he produce on the floor?

Terrific game from Hinrich. And Booker got 12 boards in 18 minutes.

Martin, Hudson and N’Diaye seem to have done nothing to help their cases.

Morrison was the most active of the guys trying to win a spot. I won’t be surprised if he stays and all the rest of the camp invites go: martin, hudson and n’diaye. We might try to pick someone up who drops off another team in these last days.

Dray has been pretty blah the last couple of games, alas. And John Wall is a writing a novel about how far he still has to go to be productive in winning games for his team — as opposed to being “exciting.” I don’t find 6 turnovers all that exciting.

Yi seems to be missing something right now. Overall, he’s had a good camp and pre-season. Here’s hoping he regains the energy and force he showed the first few pre-season games.

We’ve got 8 days, then we open. Heal up, Gil — we need to run that 3 guard offense! Got no one to play SF!!

Thank GOODNESS GIL is still on this team, we wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in you know where, without him.

There seems to be no adult supervision on the court, to keep everyone in line at all times. That is just as important as having a coach. can’t turn over the reigns just yet.

With or without Gil, this is a team that was broken up down to its foundations 8 months ago, and castoffs taken in return for that foundation. Possibly one or two of those castoff pieces may fit the new structure we’re building, but I wouldn’t count on it.

We have some young vets we’re hoping will continue to develop; we have some pretty spe projects who didn’t work out elsewhere; we have some rookies. And we have Gil and Hinrich.

This is year one of a total rebuild. Just hope above all that the rookies take hold. Wins don’t matter much this year — and that’s a good thing, because there won’t be a lot of them.

Without Gilbert on the team my preseason prediction would drop from 38 to 25 wins.
We need Gilbert in a special way Tom even if we are rebuilding. Rebuilding requires a mixture of guy’s and their potential, talent and experience causing a team to improve.
I will be most happy when a player I lobbied hard for (Josh Howard )get’s in the lineup.
Until the if Flip goes with a 3 guard rotations this is what we will facing until Josh returns:

Marvin Williams
Iguodala
Gallinari
Jamison
Battier
Gerald Wallace
Luol Deng
Derozan or Julian Wright
Paul Pierce

There are only a few guys here Kirk can match up with.
So we have to start AT at the SF and hope he pans out.

The NBA banned these $300 a pair performance enhancing shoes designed to increase the vertical leap of a player.

@Tom, YEAH, we know we seem to be hurting, but with Gil in there, we will have someone that can break down and score, even if the other team knows what he’s going to do….no biggee but it is an asset while he’s here.

They were brought here because they’re contract was expiring…lol…as I said before, EG didn’t understand the contracts that he bought, should have expired in the year that he bought them…lol….

Kevin Palmer and anyone else are good players or they wouldn’t be on this level.

The BIG difference between the wiz and other teams, except for NY, is that other teams have a system in place. Once a system is in place, you can BETTER figure out what you need and go get it. Having the BEST players may not be the remedy for success. Having the best players for a SPECIFIC role that is needed is….i.e. Utah, San Antonio, Lakers, Celtics….that is the difference between a championship org, and for lack of a better example, THE WIZ. EG has been here for 7 years, and to have to “BLOW UP” a team and start from scratch….well, that is horrific. In seven years, you don’t have any other pieces, out of 15 that you can build around? You get rid of your best players and you don’t have anything to show for it, except lower tier players? Okay, I’m leaving that alone, for now, but it’s kind of pathetic.

My prediction:

1. Cartier Martin is the only one that makes the team.
2. Lestor Hudson does not make it because the Wizards see him as an undersized 2 guard- too many 2 guards already on the team.
3. Booker takes over the Small Forward spot once Kirk Hinrich’s 5 minutes of being a starter is over in the beginning of the games.
4. Hilton Armstrong has earned minutes. I like it when players earn their minutes instead of people feeling sorry for them and letting them play.
5. Kevin Seraphin is not ready to contribute. He is a long way from being the next Ben Wallace (in his prime).

DJ and Glen sounded ecstatic at Booker’s play last night. I can only go by their play by play and analysis iwthout TV. Trevor is moving up and moving up fast.
I hope he wins the Small Forward position battle. It seems like the best option until Josh Howard is cleared.

No one is winning Neal’s money if you predicted the Wizards to win more than 31 games.

Here’s how I know – just look at the list of complaints from bloggers on what the coach and the front office and the players are doing wrong. Many of these complaints are warrented.

We’re about a week away from the regular season and I don’t have a clue if the 3-guard lineup is for real or not. Starters, to me, should mean the ability to play consistently game in/game out. Therefore, Nick Young is definitely not starting unless there is a significant injury for Nick to act as replacement.

@ dcbutler — no, Ernie didn’t explicitly say Trevor was a 3 when he drafted him. But I do think that he’ll play sometimes w/ 2 bigger guys on the floor.

@ fusey, dcb, et. al. — I don’t see where Ernie and Flip have done anything particularly wrong.

As far as the draft goes, I haven’t seen anyone taken after Booker who looks better to me, and I view Seraphin as a guy for the future (great combination of size and talent; youth, short organized basketball experience, and need to learn the language will hold him back). I argued that Cousins was the biggest talent in the draft, and a 5 at that, but I think Wall was a lock at #1 whoever got the pick.

As to past drafts, that’s ancient history — we don’t know what Abe’s direction to Ernie was.

The trade for Yi was terrific, the trade for Hinrich ditto.

As to Flip, he has a long history of winning. He knows more about coaching basketball than anyone on this blog. Get real.
