@ neal — about “rotation” time for the rookies: I’m pretty sure Booker will be in the rotation; can’t see how not. Seraphin is a big talent, but he is young, raw and just learning the language. As to “H” I’m just hoping he’s on the team!
Now, if the other obvious candidates at the 23d pick — Damion James, Dominique Jones, and Quincy Pondexter — all have good rookie seasons and Trevor falls short as a player, then it’s time for someone else to be doing the player assessment and drafting, I agree.
But I don’t think tha’s going to happen; I think Trevor will be a good player.

What do you guys think we’ve established about the Wizards after 5 pre-season games?
And what are the most important open questions? With the season upon us, what do we still need to learn?
Here on the blog, we’ve predicted from 22 wins (me) to 50 wins (crozby). What do we still need to learn to project more accurately?

This week will be a trying week for those who are trying to make the roster.
I am going to see if anyone can see any surprises by EG and Flip this week.
I will start out by saying it will be kind of difficult for both Lester Hudson and Cartier Martin to make the squad.
Do I feel both are deserving with the work and effort they have put in through the summer. Yes I do. However in the light of the depth at the guard and small forward spot I think it is unlikely they will both make it.
Why?
Flip really has not found a suitable starter for the 3 spot.
He won’t feel comfortable there until Josh Howard is healthy. For some reason AT who has a guranteed contract has not given Flip security at that spot.
But at some point AT will have to play. In fact I believe he deserves the opportunity to play himself in or out of the starting 3 spot.
I say that because of the matchups we will face on the frontline. I believe in certain game situations we will be able to go with the 3 guard lineup. But not as a starting lineup.
For some reason I believe the Wiz will try to keep AM until Josh Howard is healthy.
Tom on H I believe he will make the team and be placed on inj. reserve.
H has upside like KS and will need time to get adjusted to the league. He is a high character guy who will help us down the road. Besides EG does not want to hear he wasted a pick.
For a number of reasons I believe Nick and AT may be trade bait.
So this will be an intriguing week for the Wizards.

Good article in the Post this morning re. Armstrong. I gotta like the guy, and I feel a bit better about our C position after reading the article.
Good questions, Tom.
1. I think we’ve established that Wall is everything he was supposed to be, but we have better options than the other 3 draftees. At this point I rate all 3 as disappointments.
2. Yi has blossumed.
3. Hinrich has shown us what a steal he is.
4. Young has progressed a bit.
5. Hudson has blossumed; Martin has continued to impress.
6. The team has shown signs of good chemistry; Arenas seems to want to fit in.
We still need to learn when Howard will be back.
We need to know who will start at SF and the rotation at all positions but PG.
We need to know if McGee has progressed in overall basketball IQ.
We need to know if we can compete well for rebounds.
We can predict wins more accurately when we have more experienced players on the roster with an established record. As I said before, I’ve never followed a team that started with so many unanswered major questions.

JWall, I think Hudson will make the team in part because we DON’T have many guards – four only if you count Slick. Martin plays a postion where we have a logjam. Still, with Howard and Thornton likely gone after this year, I think he’ll make the team if he continues to play well. I really hope we don’t keep N’Diaye instead, just because he’s a draftee.

Ok, so it’s fine to draft someone at 17 and they ride the bench and need to be taught how to walk, write, talk, etc. But if the 23rd pick doesn’t produce, we have made a mistake? LOL…WOW, DENIAL AT ITS FINEST…..
I may need to find another hobby…LOL

THIS is where the problems came from. EG was supposed to trade for expiring contracts. But since some parts of being an outstanding GM are lacking, he trades for contracts that expire two years down the road, whereas others grab contracts that expire at the end of the year.
I believe that the wiz should receive some sort of handicap since our GM is obviously lacking the vision that other GMs seem to have acquired upon taking their role as a GM. Also, we deserve a handicap, since our GM is always obtaining more guards than are needed, but can’t seem to add CENTER to his vocabulary.
While the fans are continuously being asked to be patient (which is a virtue not necessarily needed in this venue), it is obvious that we need our GM to be a patiENT in some form or fashion under Dr (input name of OKC GM HERE)….HECK even Danny Ainge for that matter, and I absolutely HATED him while he was a ball player (something about that celtic green).
Now as the season draws near, I must re-stock my meds, cuz aint no telling what i’ll be going through this season. Is it actually possible to cheer, cry, and have a nervous breakdown while watching one game?????
Here’s to a productive season

My dream scenario would be to sit Gil these last 2 games and have both him & Howard practice the last 3-7 days before the Magic game and both start….lol
Even if Howard came off the bench it would be great but I hate screwing up things & messing with things once stuff gets started. Thats why I want everyone there for game 1 but its much more important to have a guy like Howard late in the season than it is early so I still know where my real priorities lay. @dcbutler — personally, I think that whether Seraphin makes it or not, the deal for Hinrich that brought us the pick was a terrific deal. Moreover, personally, I’m happy with Seraphin as the pick, or more exactly I don’t have any real reason not to be happy. YMMV.
Like the deal for Yi, this is one that cost us *nothing* and where the player’s salary is being partly picked up by the other team. Ernie stole him. It’s likely he’ll be traded next year as an expiring salary (if all goes well), and then he brings us something more! Heckuva deal.
Personally, I’m not judging our deals by whether they make us a winner *this year.* Not in the cards, and not the way, IMO, to build a championship contender. This team will see *big changes* again next off season.

Tyrone — why should Armstrong start? McGee has had some good efforts; reward them.
I’m glad if Hilton is feeling more relaxed and gaining confidence. I wish him the best. Still, it is *very* unusual for a player to improve significantly at his age. So, it’ll be surprising if he does. Still, lets hope for it, as we do with Yi.
On the other hand, when I look up around here I see a lot of pie up there in the sky. I see the ideas that: JaVale is going to become a much better player, Nick is going to improve significantly, Yi will be different and much better than in the past, Hilton Armstrong is turning it around, Lester Hudson will develop right now from a marginal NBA guy to a solid “microwave” type, etc.
And that’s before we get to the rookies: the general belief seems to be that John Wall has proved something (anything… what?), Booker has it made as a solid pro (I’m guilty of that particular ‘pie in the sky’), etc. etc.
And that’s before we get to the veterans: Hinrich, Gil and Josh are going to play like they did in their prime and before injuries, etc.
Hey… anything is possible! And this is still dream time.

So, why worry about Booker, James, Jones, if you not worried about Seraphin not doing anything. As I said earlier, it seems that Heinrich is what was wanted, moreso than the pick….I’m just saying, what a waste. Overlook all this but put expectations on booker…lol…denial.

Tom -The Wizards are not physical enough to hang in there with many NBA teams. McGee should get significant minutes but when I see him, get pushed around and when he tries to sneak a basket as if he was a shorter player, it makes me wonder if he should be playing when the starters are in. Against similar NBA type bodies, is really the only time he has success. Not that it is all bad but when Zaza Pachulia 275 lbs. out muscle him for a lay up, it is just hard to believe that he is ready to start. That is how I see a child playing against a man doing a lay-up over him. Better to foul him and make them shoot free throws than letting some guy back you under the basket and lay it in repeatedly. That’s one reason why I think Armstrong should start. I don’t think Wall should be starting either but who am I.

You have a HUGE disadvantage to overcome when one of your starters only contributes on half the court. Armstrong is probably better on the defensive end but that doesn’t make up for have no offense. Overall, McGee is a much better player and has more potential IMO.
How can you not want Wall to start? He’s about as good as Hinrich now, and has huge potential that needs to be developed.
My #1 fear is rebounding.

Im not going to kill Dray just yet. He had about 2 and a half months of doing nothing after he was in great shape. People are unforgiving when they judge you but he does have a legit excuse. He would look alot different if he was running, lifting weights, and working on his game all that time
Comment from dcbutler357

Yeah, his excuse is his coach isn’t demanding enough….lol…he’s playing hurt in the preseason? He has a lot of body fat? what’s his excuse? He was fading away last season. He’s starting to play just like AJ out there…lol…a 3 in 4′s body….can we get someone else to call the plays around here??? No discipline around here? (unless it’s a media issue)

Wasn’t able to follow the game tonight on radio or the blog. From the boxscore, John Wall had a very good game and so did Hinrich. Unfortunately, it looks like Yi is returning to the kinds of numbers he has put up historically.
McGee had 4 turnovers in 16 minutes — any insight into why he didn’t play any more minutes?
Back to the old Nick Young too, huh….?

We were enthusiastic about ‘Dray’s play during the last half of last season because the offense was run around getting the ball to him in the low post. Some of us, looked forward to having Gil and Josh back in the lineup to take the pressure off the double and triple teams that ‘Dray faced last season. The addition of Hinrich and Yi were positives. However, this season, the offense is guard-oriented and built around an untried rookie. If you are a “big” on the Wizards, it has to be frustrating to see what is happening with the offense. The bigs are being told to set high screens for Wall so that he can make use of his speed to drive the basket or take the 15-20 foot jump shot. Using his speed to drive to the basket is understood; getting him the 15-20 foot jumper is almost the same as committing a turnover. When he gets neither the drive nor the jump shot he throws the ball back to the screener for a 20-25 foot shot which leads everyone (including the fool who designed the offense) to blame the big for taking outside shots.
It appears as though Flip has absolutely no interest in taking advantage of a low post game that has demonstrated that it can be effective. With Gil on the floor to take the open shot when ‘Dray might be doubled, the Wizards have a great inside-outside offense. I can only hope that Flip is saving it as a surprise for the real season…but I’d bet not.
IMO, Flip is not a good coach. His successful W/L records are the result of inheriting good teams (which he subsequently ran into the ground leading to his firing in every case).
Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time October 17, 2010 at 10:27 PM
@Tom M – Sorry you were unable to see the game. As usual, the box score, while it shows who won and who lost, is only part of the story. Our offensive continuity is horrendous. While I wish that we did, we do not have Rip Hamilton in his prime playing for us. It takes a very special talent to run around several picks until you get free and then catch /shoot/score. Reggie Miller was the best, Rip Hamilton, Ray Allen and Michael Redd are/were great at it. Sorry to say, we have none of those guys playing on the current Wizards team; however, Flip is insistent in trying to run that type of offense.
As I’ve previously stated, John Wall is a talented basketball player. However, he is not close to being a Magic Johnson type point guard. Magic was able to force his will on the game; John will never be able to do that. I feel badly for John Wall. He has been hyped to be a savior while he is simply a very important part of a puzzle. Ted, Ernie, the Wizards PR department…whoever…is not doing John Wall any favors. They are setting this kid up for a fall. He is not the second coming…he is a talented basketball player whose greatest asset is speed.
I really wish that EG would have hired a head coach who understood that you can not fit a round peg into a square hole no matter how much you pound it. We would have been better served if we had a head coach who recognized the size and configuration of the pegs and designed the holes so that the pegs fit nicely. I know it is early in the season, and I know that Flip was dealt a bad hand last season, but I am already convinced that he is not the right guy to coach this team at this time. I agree with DCButler, Flip should be gone and EG with him. Gene Banks and Sam Cassell are great coaches and should remain no matter what. In fact, I’d be inclined to give either of them the reins.

From what one can see on the boxscore, McGee was very active. He went 5-8 from the floor, grabbed 6 boards, and blocked 6 shots — all in 15:54. Unfortunately, he turned the ball over 4 times as well.
We committed 21 turnovers. Everyone turned it over at least once except for Trevor Booker. Don’t know what’s causing that.
What’s interesting to me this pre-season is that we are actually rebounding very well — something that looked like it’d be a weakness. We out-rebounded NY last night, and I think we’ve out-rebounded our opponents in all but one game.
Dray didn’t get to the line at all last night, which is not good. On the other hand, the refs must have wanted an early night, because they only called 31 fouls combined on both teams!!
Comment from Tom Mandel

@ Gotabig, you write:
“If you are a “big” on the Wizards, it has to be frustrating to see what is happening with the offense. The bigs are being told to set high screens for Wall…”
But this is what Flip says and it’s very different:
“…Saunders said he needed more high percentage shots closer to the basket. He also asked Blatche to use his “big butt” inside.
“We got to have a thrust inside. They keep on popping out, popping out. That just isn’t going to work. We got to have more of a presence in the paint,” Saunders said. “Dray’s a low-post scorer. He’s about a good a low-post scorer as there is if you look at fours around the league. We’ve just got to get his big butt down there more often and not have him keep on popping out there all the time because that’s where he’s most effective down there on the block.”
…”I can work on it,” Blatche said. “I don’t know, that’s tough. I don’t want to get into all that. It’s tough for me to stay on the block when everyone is setting a lot of picks. I’m just going through the flow of the game. A lot of guys are sagging off, and I’m just reading the defense, but if he wants me to get on the block more, I don’t have a problem. That’s where I want to be.”
Other than the “being told to” part of what you say, you are simply reporting what you see on the court — and I see it too. Partly it may be Wall’s inexperience, partly it may just be early days between Wall and Dray and things will change, partly it may be work Dray has to do to assert himself on the block.
But what I *don’t* see is why you point the finger at Saunders. Maybe the organization needs to give Dray more effective coaching on how to get into a leveraged position in the block or more effective coaching for Wall on how to help create opportunities for Dray to do that. But I don’t hear Flip saying “we want Wall to come off screens and shoot the ball.”

Key word “coaching” and who’s the coach??? Ding Ding Ding Ding!!!!!
Flip has been TALKING since he’s been here. How about implementing it in practice. We have been through what, 5 preseason games? That’s why you don’t just hand the keys to the kid, make him watch Heinrich/Gil do it, then hand him the keys….OMG, and I’m a fan of this for what reason???…lol…where’s the bar?
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 18, 2010 at 8:24 AM
I take it we mostly had the bench in the game last night in the 4th quarter? We were outscored by 10.
Reading the Post’s article on the game — http://wapo.st/9FpBqR — makes me a little less concerned about the loss overall, but does point to the fact that we need more bench strength.
Sorry to see that Yi is having trouble maintaining the level of productivity he showed in the first 2 preseason games. And, obviously, to see Nick able to offer so little help.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time October 18, 2010 at 8:28 AM
@ dcbutler — I didn’t realize you’d been able to watch the practices. What *were* they working on?
Per what I’ve been saying since the beginning, we are a *rebuilding* team. We have what we hope is a foundation piece for an excellent future. We have some other rookies and young vets who have upside, we have other guys on 1-year (and one guy on a 2-year) contracts, and we have one outsized, long-term contract that doesn’t go with the above stuff.
We aren’t going to be good this year. There is no magic that can make us good this year. I think it’ll take about 3 years to turn this around.
Comment from dcbutler357

Guys, I think we will be fine. Once we get the full starting lineup on the floor, the defense will spread, which will open up the low-post more for the bigs. With Gil, Wall, Howard, and oftentimes Hinrich as constant threats on the perimeter, the lane and low block should open up more. No team in their right mind is going to leave those guys out there to just shoot (especially if they’re hitting their shots). Dray and McGee should be able to operate one-on-one down low. I think we have a fairly balanced attack (inside-out).

@ Gotabig — the 3 points of interest to me in the article were 1) that Flip *is* trying to get Dray to operate on the block, 2) that he gives Dray *extremely high praise* for his abilities 1 on 1 down there, and 3) that Dray is trying to work on *how* to do this in the flow of the game.
To me this gives a picture of a pretty normal team situation — without the drama implied in the idea that Flip plays favorites (Dray not being one of them), only likes a guard-oriented offense, and doesn’t know how to coach to players’ strength on the one hand and, on the other hand, that Dray isn’t really trying, just relying on his native skills, etc….
