Wall Named Summer League Most Outstanding Player
After leading Summer League in both points and assists, John Wall was named Summer League’s Most Outstanding Player. JaVale McGee was also one of 14 players named to Dick McGuire’s All-Star Selections.

Tom, McGee played great, but part of the reason he played so well IMO, is because of Wall. Can’t count how many times Wall set him up for dunks/baskets or how many times JaVale had putback dunks when Wall missed a shot in the lane but drew the whole defense allowing for an easy putback.
Tom, no comment on Cousins’ last 3 games out of you? under 11 ppg, 8.3 rpg, almost 5 turnovers per game, 6 fouls per game, 9 of 45 from the field?

I agree with Wall getting it as he made JaVale a better player. Plus JaVale got some props from NBA.com with his own highlight reel
Nice to see two young talents in the hardest positions to fill in basketball. Great young core to rebuild around.

The most hilarious thing I read this morning was that T-Mobile gave the “most outstanding rookie for July” to Demarcus Cousins because John Wall and the Wizards already left Las Vegas the day before. They wanted to physically hand it to someone so they gave it to Cousins because he was there at the end.” LOL!

Sportswiz — actually, I *did* note that Cousins started strong and finished weak. In the last item.
I don’t think it’s any secret that he’s an enigmatic kid. Enormous gifts — really off the charts. If he wasn’t a puzzlement, he would clearly have been #1 above Wall.
Also, Sportswiz, I was interested in what you said about Seraphin. He’s not going to get *lighter* via a more structured workout situation, but maybe actually *bigger*?? Can’t wait to see him in a Wizards uni — what about a posing session at least!!??

GrifonRacing, I could not agree with you more.
We have potential studs at the Point Guard and Center positions. The absolutely two hardest position to fill with really good players.
I posted earlier that if you look at all the really good Free Agents on July 1, not one of them was a Point Guard or a Center.
You cannot grow those two positions, they are delivered from heaven.

ok just wanted to see your reaction didnt see it.
I’m not sure if his weight will increase or decrease, but dropping 20lbs i would say would be surprising only because again, he’s not a heavy/fat guy, but has a big frame and hasn’t really lifted so he could add a lot of muscle.
His translator (who’s also one of his agents) said at the draft that he was actually around 280 and hadn’t really lifted yet.

@ Tom M:
I am taking a big leap here and predict you don’t know who Ke$ha is. But if you do, her first 12 lines of “Your Love is My Drug” summarize your obsession with Seraphin perfectly.
@ Blatche supporters:
I think Andray has maxed out his potential. I don’t think anyone will see anything else dynamic from the kid. “Maturity” is getting thrown out there all the time because it is a sexy word, but what Andray really needs is refinement.
@ Arenas running uphill:
Arenas is on the decline. You can’t be a high maintenance pro basketball player and not play for long stretches of time in consecutive seasons. Gilbert’s productivity may still be very desirable this coming season (i.e., 22/6/3), but the drop-offs will be at a higher rate in subsequent years. If there is a good time to trade Arenas, it is now.
@ Cartier Martin’s anger:
Although he didn’t think he had a good SL, the performance measuring metric is never one game (well – that’s what I hope it not to be). Sure, Martin helped contribute to the team’s only loss in SL, but he played fine in other contests. Flip already got some first hand knowledge on Cartier and I’ll be shocked if the Wiz don’t bring him back for other tryout opportunities, such as training camp or D-league.

Why was Demarcus Cousins not taken #2 in the Draft?
Demarcus went to the NBA Combine at a whopping 292lbs. which is 20 lbs heavier than his playing weight.
The NBA does not take kindly to players who have to fight a weight problem. The list is almost endless. Players wuch as Melvin Turpin, Oliver Miller, John hotplate Williams (what a waste!), and recently Eddie Curry.
When a player knows he has to be weighed and still shows up 20 lbs heavy is a major concern to teams.
Sacramento may get a good player this year but what is he going to do in the offseason. The fact is from the short time between March Madness and the Combine Demarcus could not keep his weight down. Now that he has $7million guaranteed in the bank for two years, how discipline is he going to be now? (that’s alot of ribs, shrimp and gumbo you can get for $7million).

Andray Blatche received a horrible contract because every team passed on him after he got arrested for solicitation.
NBA Players were shaking their heads after his arrest. It was time for Andray “to get paid” and he was stupid for getting arrested.
On Contract years their motto is: Play, Go Home and Get Paid. Stay clean for one year and don’t be stupid. Andray, obviously, was stupid.
He went from a potential $10million dollar a year payday to $3million.
That’s why he has such a great contract for the Wizards.
(PS. He has also 3 Reckless Driving charges and of course, refused to play in a game when beckoned by Flip).

From an article from ESPN using Data from Draftexpress:
“Of the 50 players with the highest body fat percentage heading into the draft over the last couple of decades (DraftExpress.com has a sortable list), only one, Shaquille O’Neal, turned into a perennial All-Star. The remaining 49 have one All-Star appearance among them (the Clippers’ Chris Kaman), and hardly came close to achieving what Cousins, the 12th-fattest guy on the DraftExpress.com list, is being projected to do.”

Lester Hudson and Cartier Martin weren’t happy
The two players with the most to play for this week were likely Hudson and Marti[n], a pair of guards with a taste of NBA experience hoping to earn a longer look from the Wizards. With Wall and McGee out, they had their biggest chance on Saturday, and while the Wizards led most of the game (and were up by 20 at one point), they fell apart down the stretch.
Martin had 24 points but 6 turnovers, including a killer on late in regulation. Hudson had 19 points and 7 assists, but also had 5 turnovers and 7 fouls, and shouldered the blame for the team not being able to hold on to its late lead.
“I’m not satisfied at all with how I played throughout this entire summer league,” Martin said. “I had one good day of shooting. That’s not gonna get it done in this league. I expect more out of myself. I just have to learn from it and push harder going into training camp to try to get myself better.”
Martin said he has a good relationship with the front office and expects to be at training camp, though he’s been told nothing definite. Hudson — who hit the dramatic game-winner on Friday night — said he did “an ok job” in Vegas and would “love to play for the Wizards,” but he said he also hasn’t been told anything.
As for the other prospects, first-round pick Trevor Booker had 15 points and 7 rebounds, and second-round pick Hamady Ndiaye had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks.

LOSER: Evan Turner(notes)
While Wall lived up to expectations as the top pick of the draft, the No. 2 selection had a much more difficult time.
Turner was the biggest disappointment of the Orlando summer league, averaging just 9.4 points on 33.3 percent shooting. He also averaged more turnovers (3.4) than assists (2.8). The Philadelphia 76ers rookie didn’t appear to be in great shape. He rebounded well, but never scored more than 13 points in five games.
What’s Turner going to do against the Big Boys when the real NBA season starts?

Actually he was ranked 12th and he was a restricted FA, but close enough. We won’t let the facts get in the way of opinion. Yep, we all knew why he got the contract he got. Given the amount of playing time he was getting and his poor judgment, it was a fair contract. However, this is very old news.

Andre Blatche is a CANCER.
Bottom line.
And that’s not opinion. That’s fact.
But we won’t let that get in the way of his poor attitude and big time lack of judgement.
If there is one player that I would not want influencing John Wall, it would not be Gilbert Arenas, instead it would be Andre Blatche.
I don’t ever, in all my life, recall hearing of a player in any level refuse to go into a game. Not girls softball, pee wee football or professional basketball.
That was a first (and hopefuly last time we see Andre lace his sneakers for the Wizards).
And yes, I did change my handle. But I reported it when I did it on the blog.

one nice thing about Vince Carter is that he can play the 2 and the 3. though i think it might be fun to watch a backcourt tandem of arenas and wall, i would support a trade that brought in carter (for one year) and also landed us Gortat. I think he is a solid center who has a lot of practice going up against dwight howard.

JeffM and other Bloggers, no one knows what we are getting in Gil, he definitely will need time to get the cobwebs out. The wiz may as well give him a chance, since we don’t want to go after FAs, and our draft skills are questionable. This whole situation is a work in progress.

I’ve been thinking about the “Cancer” comment by jmpalomo and I have been thinking about whether or not to post the following comments since then. I decided to write this post because I believe the blog is created:
1) so that interested fans can write about their likes and dislikes about how the league and more specifically the Wizards team is run;
2) bloggers can share a fellowship as Wizards fans;
3) bloggers can express their opinions about how players and management personnel perform
I don’t think that bloggers should be allowed to issue personal attacks on the league officials, team management or Wizards players. Saying that a player does a terrible job at what he is paid to do is one thing, calling that player a “cancer” is another.
I have voiced strong opinions about past coaches and players, citing what I believed to be their professional inadequacies. I have even given them nicknames such as Tapout or LOTTERY COACH, but I don’t think that I have ever attacked their person.
I don’t know jmpalomo, but I believe that he once wrote that he was a coach. If that is the case, I hope that he doesn’t bring the same sort of venom to coaching that he brings to the blog.

I read where Byron Scott will use Jamison as the 6th man. Finally, a coach with a head on his shoulders.
Trevor is having trouble in the SL offense because he was forced to get touches in the high post and make passing decisions. That’s not a good fit for him. He will make his mark early in his career by crashing the offensive boards, setting picks, running the breaks (with that amzing speed for a big guy) and hustling for loose balls.

This is already a proven player who is completely healthy. he is not coming off 3 knee surgeries, he’s BEEN off those surgeries. b4 the injury he was putting up nearly 30ppg. this past season he was putting up 22ppg and getting his game back. he played at his best with foye on the floor with him. I cant understand why so many ppl on this blog consider him a ?mark..
Blathce has proven what he can do. you may call it inconsistent, but that would be flat out wrong. look at all the numbers from the games Blatche started last season (including at the begining) and let me know what you find. if you still think thats inconsistent, you must be expecting a HOF player..

What role is Thornton playing on the team. EG stated booker was playing the 3 and that we are also looking for a 3. I don’t recall EG mentioning thornton at all. Does this mean that he’s on his way out?
I think the question mark with Gil is if he will totally recover. Last year he only showed sparks here and there, and couldn’t elevate. We know that is part of working off the rust, however, at the same time it leaves a question mark (for now). Just us talking because there is nothing else to do….lol

Milwaukee and Sac’to did a s&t sending Jon Brockman — big-time rebounder who was a round 2 pick in ’09 — to the Bucks for a future round 2 pick and Darnell Jackson’s partially guaranteed contract.
I would have *loved* to have Brockman, and this is the kind of deal for young talent I wish I saw Ernie making. Yes, Brockman is a 4 not a 5, but I’d still rather have him than Hilton Armstrong — *a lot* rather.

Thornton is our starting 3 right now — and that’s not a good thing. He’s not good enough to start even on a bad team (wasn’t a starter w/ the Clippers).
This is the last year of Thornton’s contract. Like Nick Young, also drafted in ’07, he’s gone after this year.

*Of course* Gilbert’s comeback is a question mark. He’s 3 years older than the last time he played heavy minutes, and he’s had multiple knee injuries since then.
You might keep in mind that the Wizards are a .500 team in games started by Gilbert Arenas. At his best, he was incredibly entertaining, and of course he’s a gifted basketball player. But even tho Gil was one of the top scorers in the league, he has never been a real a difference-maker.
Gil’s a volume shooter with a low FG%. He’s scores a lot because he shoots a lot. His effective FG% is a little higher than it might be, because he shoots a lot of 3s at a reasonably good %. In his best years, he also got to the line a lot and shot well over 80% there.
Last year, he didn’t get to the line as frequently, turned it over a little more than he usually does (and TOs are one of his problems) and wasn’t terribly effective over all — even though his Summer play and training camp made us all think he was totally back to the old Gil.
No doubt some of that was rust and some new teammates. And he’ll have those issues in spades this year. So we’ll have to see.
If I were Gil, I’d want to move on — to a team that could contend for a title rather than one that was rebuilding around a new generation of kids. Gil is going into his tenth season in the NBA, very likely he’s in the last 1/3 of his years. Frankly, I think he’d be *happier* in Orlando — and that’s one reason why I wish the trade for Carter was a real possibility.

I was hoping we got Matt Barnes. 2 years @ 10 million doesn’t sound bad for a player like that.
I think to get a player on a short term contract you will have to pay more per year, than to get a player on a long term contract per year.
Example:
I think a player that would agree to a 2 year 10 million deal would agree to a 3 year 13 million deal.
More guaranteed money for the player in the 13 million $ deal.
Easy to get rid of (for the team) in the 10 million $ deal.

Also, the reality is that Gil is making the salary of 3-4 players (based on how we are paying players). I don’t think, well WE KNOW the trade is based on his contract, and nothing more/less.
I’m not understanding what we are saving money for, if we are not going to spend it? There’s an old saying “you get what you pay for”…..”can’t buy steak with hamburger $$”…etc.
Comment from maggicman11

I agree that Gil didnt have the best FG% in the league, but he DEF made a difference on the court. how many times has won games at the end of the 4th in what would otherwise be losses. we may have been .500 with him but what would we be without? he effects the game much how Wall effected SL. penetration. he can get to the lane at will and draw fouls. Wall wont be a great fg% shooter either. but its not his game. we didnt draft him to be like Ray Allen. we drafted him to be like Wall. same with Gil. i think the 2 of them will give defenses a very hard time because they will cause other players to get in early foul trouble..
As for him elevating, ive seen him playing in summer leagues in barry farms and he seems to have more elevation than ever b4. (im sure that can be because he fills like he can dunk on the smaller summer league guys like he’s Lebron) but still you can see he has the ability. He is only 28. thats hardly old enough to say he he is a ?mark..

Maggic,
I agree with your analysis. We now see where we are without him…moving on. As ted said, you pay your LEADER and best player the most money. He didn’t want to be a leader, but he wanted the money. The parents should have intevened and straightened that out a long time ago. Gil no longer is asked to perform those duties, so he’s basically gone, whether we like the idea or not. Gil is/was a magnificent player, but unless he takes a pay cut, he’s not in our plans.
Actually, I don’t agree with any player on any team getting 100 mill contracts, but that’s just me.

I know we’re only bloggers, but I recall someone saying that the wizards were hurting financially, at one time. Is that still the case?

Guys, let’s remember that our own opinions are just that – opinions of fans that are often wrong. We should be tolerant of others’ opinions because they’re often right, however irritating that may be.
I didn’t see Arenas penetrating as much at the start of last year as he used to. I’m worried that he’s lost some of his energy and/or explosiveness.

I agree neal, he wasnt penetrating as well. but i dont think he lost his explosiveness, i think it was just mental. that is a big part. when u have sat out 3 years due to injury, you dont want to do anything that will cause another injury. but he needs to just play

That’s the rust that we were alluding to(explosiveness, etc), or it may be the reality that he just can’t do it on a consistent basis anymore. Whatever the case, I just don’t see his salary in our plans after this year (if not sooner).

I agree dcbutler. He’s still a very good player but he’s overpaid and will be over the hill by the time our team matures. I’m sure EG has wanted to unload his salary but hasn’t yet been successful. Nevertheless, I again predict he’ll be gone by the trade deadline.

CONGRATS JAVALE!
Making the 22 man roster to tryout for TEAM USA for the World Championships.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/wizardsinsider/2010/07/javale-mcgee-added-to-team-usa.html
It actually looks lilke Javale might have a shot to make the 12 man roster. Most of the big men on the tryout list are not fast break types. Javale brings that open court, fast break skill. Closest to him is Amare Stoudemire is running the open court.
The other Centers/PF are the Lopez brothers, Kevin Love and Tyson Chandler.
Good luck Javale! Say hi to Coach K.

Someone mentioned the trade of Gilbert Arenas for Vince Carter and Marcin Gortat . I think the trade idea is dead. What would Orlando be getting out of the deal? Orlando would be giving up and expiring contract and a back-up center for Gilbert Arenas. I’m not sure how Gilbert would fit in with Orlando. I don’t think he would be the starting shooting guard or starting point guard.
I think a better trade for both teams would be Gilbert Arenas for Rashard Lewis.
For the Wizards:
-I think Rashard Lewis can play small forward a position that the Wizards need.
-Wizards need to get rid of Gilbert. ( as much as I like him as a player I don’t know if he will ever be really welcomed here anymore)
- Rashard Lewis has 3 years and $65 million left on his contract, comparing to Gilbert’s 4 years $80 million. Saves the Wizards 1 year and $15 million.
For Orlando:
-letting Lewis go would free up minutes for Bass and Gortat. I think the only reason Lewis started is because the amount of money they are paying him.
-Lewis’s numbers are has gone down in the last few seasons and he doesn’t match up well with the other power forwards.

Gil for Rashard Lewis? I don’t think we want Rashard Lewis, no. If we trade Gil — and it’s a big “if” because someone has to want him — it’ll be for expiring salaries and/or young talent and/or picks.
It wouldn’t be a shocker to see him go to the Knicks for Eddie Curry’s expiring salary. Curry isn’t going to actually play this year (or ever) — for anyone.

@ Tom M
Why don’t you think the Wiz would want Shard? I see a couple more advantages for having him over Gilbert
a) he spreads the floor
b) he can create his own shot
c) he has range (3 pt shooting)
d) very good free throw shooter
The only 2 problems I see with him are
a) he’s older than gil
b) he’s about to hit the nba wall of a steep decline (been in the league since 18 yrs old)

Wiz_fusion- I cant see how a-d are “advantages”.. Gil does all those things also.. actualy better than Rashard can. 3pt range, create his own shot, spread the floor, free throws.. I would still be 4 that trade anyhow because our hole at SF is greater than our hole at SG. I think Nick, cartier or Hudson can fill the SG spot till next season..

I think I left out the obvious — Shard is 6-10 and Gil is 6-4. You can’t teach height.
No doubt Gil can still do a) through d); but, he can’t do them as well after his knee injuries.
If Arenas is still on the team, I’m giving him 40 games to prove me wrong.

Tom,
At one time I taught Gil and Eddy Curry trade would be a good trade since New York lost out on the big three. Now since they picked up Raymond Felton I don’t think New York will go for it.

A theory:
Maybe we unfairly criticize high scorers a bit when they have less than average scoring percentages, such as Arenas.
The offense comes down, goes through several progressions trying to get a high percentage shot. If that doesn’t work someone has to try a lower percentage shot. The highest number of such shots is taken by the guy who handles the ball the most, such as Arenas. It hurts his shooting percentage.
Looked at differently, when someone has to take a shot near the buzzer the team may try to get it to the best shooter (Arenas). He takes a low percentage shot and that hurts his shooting percentage.

@Neal, I think that is a very good theory. I wonder if it would be possible to see 2 shooting percentages for each player:
1) % of makes with < 10 seconds left on the shot clock or game clock.
2) % of makes of all other shots.

maybe 10 seconds is too much. i think < 7 secs on clock would be better.
