Great kid. Love to have him. I imagine we all would. He’ll have a number of opportunities this Summer, I’m sure. Who knows what he and his agent have targeted as the kind of deal they want — is it about $$, security, playing time, going for a title? Or… ?

Interesting that no one asks him straight up: “how are your knees holding up after playing more minutes than you have in years?” I wonder why.

No one asks “how are your knees holding up after playing more minutes than you have in years?” because they actually watched the games and could see for themselves that he got stronger as he got more minutes. His knees are fine. He will go on to be one of the best point guards in the league. The Wiz should focus on signing him as their highest priority.

I agree with Gotabigboyoffense.

Shaun is the type of point guard that makes the whole team better. He has a rare talent for being able to run an offense. He is one of the few tall point guards who has a talent for posting up the smaller point guards. Other guards try, but they struggle because it doesn’t come naturally to them Plus, I thought his defense was pretty good. He uses his length to his advantage on defense. He is the free agent they need to sign. I wonder if he will join the Wiz next year because he does not want to lose minutes to Gil.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Shaun and Nick start, with Gil and Randy, Cartier (or draft pick) backing them up.

I like the idea of Gil as 6th man. The team needs a different character. If Gil is a starter and the team starts to revolve around him and his personality then it will be a long season again.

SL is a true point Gil is a 2 gard there should be no battle for the 2 and SL should have made his case for starting point gard..
But lets start to Drill the D# in every player we have i know im not the only one tired of Great O# with little to no D# it should be the key to the rebild no matter how many points you had you should be ranked by the points the guy you were garding had.. other than that i am going to let this play out its all up in the air we could have no players for last years team this year… we could go draft all the way or we could go FA all the way or a 50/50 mix or what ever gets the job done but its not going to happen over night no matter what

Gotabig — no question about Shaun’s talent nor his performance as the rust wore off. *He himself* raised the issue of his knees in the interview, as I’m sure you noticed, when he said he was going to focus this Summer on his health: “my knees” he said.

I think we all want him to do really well — with us! And if not with us, then still to do well (just not *against* us ).

i don’t think shaun will have as many offers as some of us think, i think we have had the opportunity of noticing him more than others. i think the wiz have a good shot at getting him, but there will probably be about 2-3 other teams in the mix. of course the wiz have more than enough money to compete with any other team for him, but at the same time he is a risk so the wiz don’t need to pay him too much.

as far as gil, i believe he will be on the team next season. that knicks thing doesn’t even make sense to me, they are either going to pay big money for someone they wouldn’t even want to trade away, or they would have to overpay someone and try to trade them for gil, which the wizards would be fools to accept. i doubt the knicks will continue to trade away a bunch of guys now that 2010 free agency will be out of the way. (unless they are trying for melo now lol)

but back to gil, i believe he could still start at pg for the team. i believe flip would just alter his role in the offense, having him handle the ball less in the half court, and have more fast breaks for him to handle the ball. handling the ball may not be his style, as the turnovers and low shooting percentage showed. he can still start at pg and do well there imo, he would just do better in a different role than this past season.

Gil as the #3 guard is an interesting idea. It’s hard to imagine Gil accepting that role gracefully but you never know.

Saunders said a couple of times that Foye is really a #3 guard. I see him as a #5 guard, being the 3rd option at both guard positions and allowing the team to keep only 5 guards. Not in the regular rotation until an injury occurs.

neal — Foye is *very unlikely* to be with the team next year. We can make him a qualifying offer, but we won’t because it’s for too much money given the kind of player he’s turned out to be.

We have 6 players under contract: Gil, JaVale, Andray, Al, Nick and Quintin (on the assumption that he picked up his option).

We have a team option on Josh Howard for $12m. Obviously, we won’t pick that up, so he’ll be an unrestricted FA.

I don’t get why everyone seems so eager to have back the group of guys that went 9-23 to close the season. We are rebuilding from scratch. We will not be a good team next year — and that’s a good thing! Unless we do like OKC, we can’t build a championship contender.

Of the 6 guys we have, 3 of them don’t offer much (Nick, Quintin, Al). The other three are Gil (who is on the downside of his career and will be traded I hope), Andray (who may turn out to be a good NBA player if he continues to develop his very special skills), and JaVale (who has potential to be a game-changing player but may never be a starter).

Ideally,

1) we trade Gil for expiring contracts (giving us cap room *next* year),

2) we trade one of our trade exceptions for e.g. Michael Beasley and at least one pick,

3) we trade Nick or Al along w/ our other trade exception to a team that needs to shed a good but expensive player to stay under cap or tax.

4) we bring in at least 4 rookies via the draft or otherwise,

5) we sign Livingston and Singleton

6) we pick up a couple of other young players somehow (I have my eye on Kyle Lowry for example), and

7. we take our lumps in 2010-11, get a high draft choice and use our continuing cap room to keep rebuilding next off-season.

If we can do all these things, we can become a very interesting and dangerous team in 2-3 years.

does anyone know of any more roger masons? free agents that are going unnoticed? it would be nice to pick up a guy like that, mabye even an undrafted rookie that would be cheap for the year to try out.

i think the wiz would be smart to have a small base (dray, mcgee, livingston, mabye arenas) and surround them with tryouts. bring in young guys and young role players already in the league and see what they have to offer for the future.

some (most likely) undrafted guys the wizards could go after are malcolm delaney (virginia tech), jerome dyson (uconn), demitri mccamey (illinois), lazar hayward (marquette), manny harris (mich), and some others.

i really like malcolm delaney out of this list, he has an amazing ability of drawing fouls which is the easiest way to get points, so i think he could have an nba game if given the chance. of course he can return to vt for another year and mabye improve his game and the wizards could pick him up next year as well.

To be fair Tom, Josh Howard was not really with the team that closed the season. He did look pretty well when he did play. That said, I don’t think we’ll sign him for 12M either.

On the subject of Livingston, although he is pretty good, and still pretty young, there are not that many other teams that he fits with. Maybe Indiana? Miami? I mean who else would want him to play starters minutes at point guard?

Josh Howard played 91 minutes as a Wizard — you are going to judge him off that? Or off his last 2 years overall? As a Wizard he played better than Nick Young but not as good as Alonzo Gee. He is 30 and coming off multiple injuries. *Why* would a rebuilding team want Josh Howard?

gray16 — Off the radar favorites are always fun. I like Marqus Blakeley. Compare his stats to Pondexter, Damion James or even Wes Johnson. Not saying he is as good as any of those guys, but he’s been a heckuva college player — and those guys often make it in the league.

Tom, I’m quite aware that Foye is not likely to be with us next year. Same with Howard and Miller. Nevertheless, there’s a price at which I would take all of them. I’d take Foye for $2M, which is probably about right for a #5 guard, but I wouldn’t expect that to be enough. I’d take Howard for $4-$5M, but not expect that to be enough. I’d take Miller for $3-$4M, but not expect that to be enough. I don’t expect any of them back next year. Each of these guys is almost surely worth more in the market than we should be willing to pay.

tom, also look into lazar hayward, he’s been one of my favorites these pass couple of years as well. back when dominic james, jerel mcneal, and wes mathews were all on the team with him, i kept hearing his name (because he was getting another rebound or draining another three) and i was like, “who is this dude…” lol. but he’s got good talent, he would be a good guy to take a look at as well.

as far as josh howard, he played much better than alonzo gee did, that is for sure. he became mr. first quarter all over again, and was looking good until his injury. if a team has a guy who can hit superstar shots (like josh howard can) it helps in ways that can’t be measured by stats. (but there i go again with that lol, just my opinion on it though)

the reason i don’t think the wizards should worry about him is due to injuries and attitude problems. he’s gil taken to a worse level (injury and attitude wise). if healthy he is certainly worth 12 million, but it’s a risk the wizards don’t need to take at this time.

Be nice to have Bill Walker and Jermaine Taylor, huh? Very good 2 guards off the bench (and maybe will develop into more: esp. Walker).

Last year at this time, I was saying “Curry Curry Curry” over and over, and most on this blog were saying “gee, I don’t know…” It was close between him and TE for RoY, but really Curry was slightly better (tho Tyreke may wind up the better player long term).

I agreed w/ the trade of our pick last year, but in retrospect it was a mistake. Learn from your mistakes. In the best of all worlds we weren’t going to contend for a title last season; in that case, why do you trade away your future?

This is the Ernie Grunfield problem — he likes to build “competitive” teams via deals. I don’t want to be competitive; I want to win a title.

The upcoming draft will be looked at as one of the deepest ever — not necessarily in superstars but in real NBA rotation players.

Where you pick in the first round isn’t as important as having multiple picks. Beyond the first pick, there is *very little link* between draft position and productivity in the league. Here’s a table listing last year’s rookies in order of how much they helped their team. You will see what I mean. There’s only a weak link between draft position and productivity:

Rodrigue Beaubois (whom some of you will remember me praising) was the greatest bargain along with Ty Lawson (whom I also said I wanted; he is a *terrific* player) and Taj Gibson (I totally whiffed on him).

The top 10 of round 2 produced *6 rotation players* (and one guy, Sergio Llull, who didn’t come over from Europe), including Blair — had he played more minutes *he* might have been RoY.

The next 10 produced 3 rotation players (Meeks, Thornton, Budinger).

i agree tyrone, as i listed before (the champions of the past 10 or so years), it takes trades to get to championship level, or at least appears that way.

spurs are the major exception as they drafter their major stars (duncan, robinson, parker, ginobili, etc.)

but getting a superstar in the draft is a great way of getting ahead of the game, so hopefully the wizards can get lucky and get one in the near future.

*Of course* you can build via trades! But, you need assets to trade. We don’t have any. Once we’ve built a good team via the draft, trades can become important.

Now, it is different if there are no salary constraints (viz. a big market like LA or NY), but that’s not the Washington Wizards.

Different too if you have a friend like Kevin McHale (give me your broken parts and I’ll give you Kevin Garnett), but that’s a once in a generation situation.

Otherwise, if you don’t have a lot of valuable assets to trade (which the Wizards *don’t*, duh), it’s kinda hard to build a title contending team via trades.

For that matter, OKC made trades — e.g. for Jeff Green (the trade that helped make Boston a champ). And I also suggested 3 trades (trade Gil, trade one draft exception for Beasley and picks, trade the other draft exception along w/ NY/AT for an excellent young player that a team needs to shed for salary cap or luxury tax reasons).

But what *we* can do *now* is build through the draft. Primarily — not exclusively but definitely start there. We control whom we draft.

Daniel Orton is now projected as a lottery pick ahead of Patrick Patterson, who played significantly more minutes and is a Junior……can anyone explain to me why? I watched him play a little bit this year, and wasn’t dazzled by his performances….the guy is good, but is he good enough to be worth a guaranteed lottery salary coming off a freshman year in college? I don’t think so……any thoughts?

We have 6 under contract and will draft 3. Presuming our 2nd round pick makes the roster we still can sign about 2-3 of our own FA’s and 2-3 quality FA’s from elsewhere. We can do all of the above. That’s not to say all that makes us a contender, just that we have multiple opportunities to get legitimate NBA players while we’re waiting to draft/develop/trade for 2-3 legitimate stars. It’s going to really be interesting.

There will be starters, rotation players, and maybe even a star or two in the 2d half of the first round and the top of round 2. I’d *much* rather draft well than sign relatively inexpensive FAs from around the league (tho, yes, at the right prices I’d like to have Livingston and Singleton).

Would I like to sign Amare Stoudemire? Sure. Do I think he is coming here? No. Ditto Bosh, Wade, James, et. al. — not coming to a rebuilding team in the middle of an ownership transition.

If we can get someone like Kyle Lowry — a good point guard who is inexpensive and still young — sure, lets get him. There are a few guys like that around the league.

No, I’d choose Livingston over Lowry. But not because of stats for this season, rather because his play improved over his stay w/ the Wizards and his ceiling is so high.

Overall stats for this season actually favor Lowry — tho not in every category.

But I would like to have them *both*. That’s what I had in mind. Lowry is a very good defender (look at his defensive rebound numbers and steal numbers vs. Shaun). Also look at how often he gets to the line — almost twice as often as Shaun.

Shaun is a better shooter, and if he continues to improve in his comeback he is a better player overall.

I think Lowry will be a bargain, btw. Houston can give him a qualifying offer at @$3m and then trade him, or they can let him become unrestricted. Not much buzz around him; he’s underrated. Would be a very high value pick up, if I’m right about that.

Tom- I agree, drafting big men is probably trickier than drafting guards because it is hard to determine just how good they will actually be in the NBA (take Darko Milicic for example)…….Honestly though, I think the Heat would ask too much for Beasley because he was drafted 2nd…..and anyway, the Heat still have PLENTY of cap room to get good free agents this summer even with Beasley on the roster and the draft picks they have, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t keep him for one more year.

so most NBA mock drafts have us drafting one of the following with our 2nd round pick: Quincy Pondexter, Dominique Jones, Jordan Crawford, and Miroslav Raduljica. A couple analysts even have us drafting Jones with the 30th pick. Does anyone know anything about these players? I’m sort of amazed by the swift tumble of the Spurs. Then again, their starting 5 is 161 years old.

As to the Jazz, yup they have the #9 pick from the Knicks. On the other hand, their own #23 pick belongs to the Twolves. In 2 out of the last 4 drafts, the #23 pick has been a better player than the #9 pick, so I wouldn’t think of this as some fabulous piece of luck that’s fallen in the Jazz’s lap.

W4L — read the media. The Heat want to dump Beasley and his salary. The *best thing* they could get back would be a trade exception; that’s what they want.

LOL…you walked right into this one….not looking at statistics and looking at the situation for what it is at face value, having received the rights 5 years ago and ending up with a #9 pick, WHILE making the playoffs can be considered luck, compared to us having two ugly seasons in a row and may end up with what, the seventh pick?

You don’t have to find the doom/gloom in everything…..AND they always seem to find the right players to FIT their system. I’m starting to like any organization that has a foundation and has/picks players to fit their system….

At the same time, they are a great illustration of what I’m saying — they have one very high draft pick on their squad (Deron Williams). Two other guys (Kirilenko and Koufos) were chosen near the bottom of round 1.

All the rest are either 2d rounders or weren’t drafted at all.

Thank you sir. Isn’t it amazing how a team can go from almost elite status to rebuilding in a matter of a season or two?

Random thoughts:

Gotta love the championship caliber/contenders. They have a level or extra gear that just propels them above others. How about Orlando (no losses in the post-season). To sweep a Larry Brown team is awesome in itself. Atl is a playoff team, but they don’t have a consistent output. They may need some “beef” to go with all that finesse.

Lebron vs Boston…nice series….rough him up so Orlando can finish them off

Carmelo may be a good pickup for someone soon, he may not stay in Denver, due to their inability to get over the hump. They were supposed to be the team that challenged the Lakers. Dallas is just Dallas…lol..

It may be time for San Antonio to re-tool during the offseason. Their another stabile org, i’ll watch their off-season moves, as well as OKC

Phoenix is a total shocker for me, we’ll see how long they last….

Kobe was off, but his team (mostly Artest (even though he almost blew the game)and Gasol) picked up the slack until the end, then Kobe and Fisher both hit big jumpers.

Fouling williams with 6.1 seconds left so utah couldn’t attempt a three pointer.

Phoenix vs Lakers will be very interesting. I doubt Phoenix will be able to pull it off, due to the Laker’s Front court, but I can see Phoenix giving the lakers some problem, and at least cause the lakers to be sore and tired for the finals.

It would be great if Phoenix wins, but I don’t seem them having a chance against cavs/celtics/orlando.

kobe hit some important shots last night, and derek fisher and ron artest were going off from deep.

i told my dad, even when the lakers were losing that they were going to win. he said i was crazy and asked me why. i just said “kobe bryant”… the best closer in the game gives his team a good chance to win any game, all they have to do is keep the game close. jordan did the same thing.

Most places I’ve seen online say the pick is for 2011, but then I’ve heard it was 2010 from others……the day the trade went down, I saw on ESPN that the pick was a 2010 2nd round pick, but maybe it was a mistake? Emir Preldzic sounds like an Irsan Ilyasova player in the works…..still raw and undersized, but a guy I think would be good for the Wizards in maybe a year or 2, definitely no Pecherov! lol…… would like to see him on the Summer League Squad if possible, though unlikely.

I read it was a “protected” second round pick – if it would be high in the second round it gets put off till the next year.

If we can get Beasley cheaply we should go for it. He may end up a bust but he could also be a steal who could turn out to be a star.

Looking at Sacramento, they also have Beasley on their radar. His price has a lot of teams taking a second look. If this org is to move forward, we really must have something in place, to not just attract players, but to develop players also.

Beasley is the kind of guy we should be looking for. Low risk in terms of money but high potential. Let’s say the odds are 1 in 4 that he fulfills his potential (since Miami has already soured on him), that’s OK. We need to bring in a whole bunch of guys with “potential” to get 2 or 3 who pan out. Forget the guys who are already all-pros.

Preldzic is the same age as Ilyasova; he hasn’t done anything in Europe, whereas Ilyasova is a terrific player.

The Sacramento pick would be nice to have this year. I’d be happy to have Dominic back too — but you knew that!

Beasley costs $5m next year, but after that there’s a team option, etc. So the risk is for one year only. This is a very gifted kid, obviously, but it’s not clear yet that he has the other qualities you need to succeed in the NBA — like discipline and focus! To be honest, I’d only take him for our exception if there were picks included. Otherwise, Sacramento can have him if they’re interested.

It does seem unlikely Sacramento would have given a high round 2 pick in the upcoming draft to have Dom’s services for 60 days. Probably a phantom pick.

Sacramento is kind of interesting. They have some nice young pieces (Evans, Landry, Casspi, Brockman), high picks in both rounds this year, and cap room this year plus more next year.

I would like to have potential also, but i’m fed up with how we don’t “develop” our players properly. We didn’t work our potential in with our vets and mesh them together IMO. If we couldnt do it then, how are we supposed to get it together with the same coach/gm?

I like Ernie and think he really tried to get us there. There were some good trades that could have went either way. It just so happens it went the wrong way. But the point is that we didn’t develop our young ALONG WITH the vets, so how much faith do you put into it happening now?

We have an excellent coach. There are very few coaches that have a positive effect on the numbers their players put up. Flip is one of them.

By and large, NBA General Managers are not able to make rational decisions about building rosters. In particular, they draft poorly. Here is proof:

1. there’s only a very weak link between where a guy was picked and the numbers he puts up in the league. It’s pretty close to random.

2. there is quite a strong link between the numbers a guy puts up in high-level NCAA competition and the numbers he puts up in the NBA.

Yet, very few GMs use #2 to do better w/ #1.

I guess we all have different definitions of the word excellent, because he did a terrible job of using his roster during the first half of the season (and some of the second half, with limited resources of course)….whatever excuses can be made. Oh well, that’s in the past, but it is what it is. No need in beating a dead horse.

LOL….I guess #2 is kind of a no-brainer, since up until the last 10-15 years, most of the players came from the NCAAs….LOL….

Wizfan4life the major difference to me between darko/kwame is that the three guys that went after Darko were Melo, Bosh and Wade.

The three guys after kwame were chandler, gasol, and eddy curry with only gasol becoming a true star player.

You guys are saying what I’ve thought for a long time: don’t draft a kid high that hasn’t excelled at the next lower level (NCAA or Europe). We could miss out that way but it’s MUCH more likely that we’ll do better.

I was for taking Shane Battier instead of K.Brown.

It’s hard to know the full story behind the first half of last year. Maybe Grunfeld told Flip to play the veterans, knowing they were about to be traded and didn’t want to diminish their value by reducing their minutes. And Flip rightly knew that McGee wasn’t ready for prime time.

These are potential round 2 picks. I like Torrance off his performance in Portsmouth, wch was widely lauded. He has size and athleticism and is converting from a 2 to a 1. In principle, that turns me off, but people say he can definitely play the 1 and very well.

Vasquez was successful at Maryland, and I wouldn’t bet against the guy despite the repeated knock you read about his lacking athleticism, won’t be able to guard his position, etc.

Hobson was a JC transfer to New Mexico. He’s an undersized combo forward. Reminds me of a zillion guys who wind up playing in Europe. I don’t like him for us. Not sure I like Torrance or Vasquez as high as #34; might be better guys available — but after all this is just the start of the workout period.

Tom- yeah I agree with you on Vasquez. Although his scoring went up over the course of his college career, his assist and assist/turnover ratio did not steadily increase, and at times in games he seemed like he wasn’t a guy who could run the point for significant minutes for a playoff caliber team (but then again, most players who are projected 2nd round picks aren’t expected to start anyway)

speaking of vasquez (actually this has nothing to do with him for the most part lol), anyone watch the euroleague cup?

a guy by the name of juan carlos navarro was going off in the championship. i’ve never heard of this guy, if only the wiz could’ve drafted him… oh yeah lol.

no, he’s not that big of a deal, but he does play a similar style to vasquez (a combo guard who likes to shoot). but he looked good in the euroleague, i kind of wish the wizards would’ve given him a chance, but at the time he came to the league, we didn’t really need him.

to the person saying mabye trade for the rights to rubio, from the little bit i have been watching him recently, i’m all for it (depending on what’s given up for him). he has a lot of talent and potential from what i’m seeing, he could be a solid pg in this league for years.

he is a great passer, decent shooter, plays good defense, pass first, he just looks to be a great pg. but i doubt the wolves would give him up.
