Game Day Utah

SportzWiz checking in…Dave Johnson will be joining us shortly….The Wizards begin a four-game road trip tonight against the Jazz. Every team the Wizards will face on the trip would be in the playoffs if the season ended today. The Jazz currently sit fourth in the West and second in the Northwest division behind the Denver Nuggets (the Wizards will play the Nuggets tomorrow).

11:12 AM EST…Dave Johnson….adjusting to the time change out there. Actually I have been up since 5 AM but caught up in the March Madness….I have Arkansas-Pine Bluff…going all the way….We know this is a tough trip but the Jazz played last night in Oklahoma City. That doesn’t mean necessarily anything but the  Wizards could use any possible advantage. What we are seeing is a team that is playing hard and that will win some games in the NBA. The Wizards did not beat themselves Saturday against the Magic–only ten turnovers, made just one less field goal—but were just in the end beaten by the better team. Shaun Livingston had his best game as a Wizard…still need more points somehow from the Wizards starting back court…BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 9:00 PM —with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG

8:10 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in from Energy Solutions Arena…..Shaun Livingston will start tonight and Randy Foye will come off the bench…..Jazz lost last night to Oklahoma City and played without Andrei Kirilenko (calf), Mehmet Okur (back), and Ronnie Price (wrist)….Update you on their status as we have it.

8:26 PM EST…starters are in….Wizards will have Shaun Livingston, Mike Miller, JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche, and Al Thornton…..Jazz will go with CJ Miles, Carlos Boozer, Mehmet Okur, Wesley Mathews, and Deron Williams…so Kirilenko is not in the starting lineup

Should be a fun game. I always like playing in Utah for some reason. Theyve got a few names out with injuries but I have a feeling they may come back tonight just so they can ease those guys in against an easy opponent.

As for me, all I want to really see is Livingston continue to get more run at the point early in games and see how good he looks even when his shot isnt falling as much. I would like to see him start the rest of the year but I know that wont happened.

The main thing I want to see though is the frontcourt matchup. Can Blatche keep it up and can him & McGee matchup with Boozer & Milsap? If Okur is back then throw him in there also. I think Flip probably got on Blatche about his rebounds last game so I think he will be alot more active this game in that regard but he may be due for a letdown in scoring. I could see him going for like 16 & 13 on like 35-40% shooting but if he puts up numbers against these guys then it just continues to prove that he’s an elite guy even right now.

I worry about him getting in foul trouble against them though. I also want to see how McGee plays, espically defensively. He was horrible last game but when I watch it closely, I think alot of it had to do with people telling him to stay on his feet. It seemed like he had it in his mind to stay on his feet until the last second last game which made him always jump late and have guys easily score on him and get into his chest for fouls. He does get alot of fouls on pump fakes by jumping so much but I also dont want to take his aggression away.

It will be intersting to see if Flip has him guarding Milsap or Boozer. The better defensive matchups may be Blatche on Boozer & McGee on Milsap but you dont really want to do that because you run the risk of Blatche getting in foul troulbe or just him wearing down regardless due to having to play so hard on both ends. Thats why I would put Blatche on Milsap or Okur if he plays because we need Blatche so much on O. I would also like to see Livingston play alot with Blatche & McGee to get them some easy baskets which they hardly ever get

wiz vs jass AT UTAH…

this is beyond a tough game for the wiz. the jazz rarely ever lose at home, and have been like this for a while now.

blatche should have no problem scoring against boozer, seeing as boozer doesn’t even try on defense. as long as flip puts andray in good situations, he should get 30+ tonight.

but after that, i don’t know. deron williams will crush who ever is guarding him, imo he is the best pg in the league. kirilenko will stop al thornton in his tracks most likely, al is going to have to make smart decisions tonight. wesley matthews is coming off a great game vs okc, and we know mike miller doesn’t play much defense so he could go off again tonight. and okur is going to make javale play a role he is not familiar with, unless flip puts javale on boozer and dray on okur.

and we all know utah’s pet move is the pick and roll, and the wizards haven’t been able to defend the pick and roll very well for a while now. defensively, the wizards are in for a tough task and offensively won’t be much different. but hope the wiz can surprise some people and pull this one out.

Per what I’ve said here over and over, we’re in TOTAL rebuilding mode right now.

We’re not building around what we have, we are starting over. Projecting starting lineups may be fun fantasy, but it does translate into anything.
- – -
see, this is where our opinions differ. i also thought the team is on full “rebuilding” mode after the trades, but the more i look at the situation and at who’s still in management, the less likely i’m inclined to think that way. here are my reasons why

1) grunfeld did his job already – which was to purge the luxury tax by getting rid of assets for the current owners. and he’s never been like a presti who can rebuild teams from drafts. because dc has drafted somewhere in the middle pack during the playoff run days, grunfeld was able to get a talented but flawed guy that none of the lottery teams wanted/devalued – yielding nick young (very smooth but all over the place) and javale mcgee (has potential but currently has a limited number of offensive skillsets and is getting pwned defensively by more seasoned nba centers with girth).

2) flip is coming back next season. flip is going to go back to his motto of “trying to win a championship” instead of “trying to rebuild” – where the latter was NEVER part of the deal when he signed with washington last off-season. due to flip’s “win now” mentality, grunfeld will build another team, within reasonable financial means, to get the franchise back to playoffs next season. and this will not be done via more young free agents and the draft.

3) revenues are at stake. after 2 consecutive fallout seasons, dc’s pro basketball fandom is back approaching dormancy. a lot of newly signed ticket holders were “duped” that this season would yield breaking out of round 1. unless these folks have an insatiate appetite for the nba (in general), they’ll walk and not come back until the team is ready to win consistently again.

retention is the other key. i don’t know how long GABBO and HCF and others have been ticket holders, but if they’ve been doing it as long as, say, i have, they’ll most likely continue because they can’t get enough of pro basketball (mentioned above) and because of loyalty. however, if the appetite is not there (because the team and organization stink beyond repair) and/or if the organization is no longer devoted to these loyal fans, then these folks also will walk. the organization is really going to be in a tailspin if it can’t retain the “diehards” because these people are the foundation for the “fans platform”. i got a better sense of how other “diehards” that go to games think and why they don’t even “bat an eye” when the renewal invoices show up in their mailbox. it may be maniacal, but these people really love the wiz.

4) lack of ownership voice. most of us know what the pollins stood/stand for. some of us know what leonsis is standing for with the capitals. however, when both sides are at odds with settling the control issue of the franchise (and other related assets), it is impossible for grunfeld to expand possibilities for the future because the future owner may not have the same viewpoints as the current owner.

as an example – say grunfeld resigns josh howard and the pollins are fine with that decision this july 2010. however, leonsis, finally acquiring the wiz after july 2010, does not want josh howard. then what? grunfeld did the correct thing with one owner but not with the other. and, with this off-season being so wide open for washington, don’t you think grunfeld’s job is equally challenging? i know he’s told the washington post that he’s still following pollin’s orders, but in reality, is he really doing that knowing they’ll not be owners for that much longer?

at this point in the season, we can almost predict who flip will play and won’t play based on his media comments

“I think the biggest thing is he’s got a very high basketball IQ,” Coach Flip Saunders said of Livingston. “He seems to calm everybody down a little bit when he’s on the floor, and he’s got great size, so when things break down he has the ability to back somebody down and get a shot off over somebody.”

Saunders called JaVale McGee’s performance “very poor.” “You can’t have a starting center not get a defensive rebound,” the coach said

Arenas says he deserved punishment

WASHINGTON — Gilbert Arenas says he deserves to be punished for bringing guns to the locker room.

The suspended Washington Wizards guard tells Esquire magazine he wasn’t using “longevity thinking” when he took out four guns in what he says was an attempt to play a prank on teammate Javaris Crittenton in December.

Arenas pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge in January and will be sentenced next week. He has been suspended until the end of the season by the NBA.

His sentencing is scheduled for March 26.

The Esquire article hits newsstands next week. In it, Arenas says he “messed up” the legacy of Wizards owner Abe Pollin, who died in November. Arenas says he called Pollin’s widow to apologize.

W_F — how can we *not* be in rebuilding mode, man?

We have less than 1/2 a team under contract for next year, and not even 1/2 a starting lineup either! Moreover, we certainly don’t have even one *for sure* piece of the kind you build a team around.

I agree that livingston should start the pg the rest of the season, or at least untill he proves that he doesnt belong there. Foye is a horrible pg. he is a nice player, but not a good pg at all. he makes me regret ever critizing gil for not being a “true” pg, which he is. Foye brings out what it means to be a 2 playing the 1. when he was at the 2 with gil at the point he was great. so please Flip, let him play off the ball!
as far as rebuilding, of course we are! but I like what we are starting out with. Blatche at the 4 and gil at the 1 for next season, isnt a bad way to start rebuilding a team. neither is having one of the most athletic big men ive ever seen in mcgee, although he is EXTREMELY raw skill wise, he does have alot of potential, half of which will come just by him growing older and adding that “man weight” as my dad calls it, to his frame. right now he is just playing with “boy weight” which giving his age is not a surprise. the weight room cant put man weight on you. thats the weight and strength you get just from your body maturing.
all that said, with some luck in the lottery this summer, next season, we could end up where we thought we’d be this season.

Livingston is the best true PG we’ve had in at least 3 seasons…

Blatche 25 & 9 since being given the keys…

This team could be a OKC type team in the next few seasons with a few decent off season moves & a legitimate draft pick or two…

Meanwhile keep Dray, Livingston, Thorton, McGee, Foye & Arenas around. If we could hold Howard for cheep on a re-negotiation (hahaha, yeah right) I wouldn’t mind seeing what he’s got left as well. If not, try to package him & Nick Young for something (or nothing if that’s all we can get. I mean, it’s all we’ve really gotten for dumping everyone so far). But definitely let EVERYONE else clean out their lockers & find their next contracts elsewhere…

Amazing that we were a crap team but one of our previous starters is now starting for the best team in the east & two of our previous starters are now starting for the 2nd best team in the west.

PATHETIC!

@ Tom M. and dcbutler

i’m not arguing about the semantics of the word “rebuild” – i’m actually arguing about the phrase “total rebuilding effort” (aka “full rebuilding”) for the wiz and why that’s not what this team is doing under grunfeld (hence the 4 reasons).

a total rebuild means, imo

– new ownership
– new gm
– new coaching staff
– 50%+ new players

i thought i made it clear when i copied Tom M’s

“we’re in TOTAL rebuilding mode right now”

and

“We’re not building around what we have, we are starting over.”

i don’t agree with those 2 statements and thus my rant.

Sure, we’re in rebuilding mode, but we’re not starting with Blatche and nothing more. For starters, we have 6 players under contract. Then, we have three more who ought to get a contract offer (Howard, Singleton, Livingston). We’ll probably get at least two of them. Then, we have three draft choices. Our 2nd round choice will be a high one, so we can expect all three to be on hand, at least for a year. So we’re at 11-12 players. We still will have holes, but it’s not like we’re going to form a whole new team from FA’s.

From Steinberg’s Bog

According to the AP, Gilbert also told the magazine that he used to have as many as 500 guns that he bought from “an elderly man’s World War I collection,” and that he has a painting of Abe Pollin hanging in his garage.

“I just walk by it with my head down,” Arenas said. “I called Mrs. Pollin and said, ‘If Abe was still with us, I would’ve had to talk to him, so I’m gonna give you the same respect. I want to say sorry to you. I deserve to be punished. I’ll do everything it takes to get back your husband’s respect.”‘

- – -
like so many, religion is the only way to go for gilbert to “repent” whatever sins he thought he did.

abe is certainly in the kingdom of heaven.

it is not too late for gil to pick up a bible and go to church.

changing the jersey number from 0 to 6 has religious meaning. 6 = saturday = sabbath day! you’re on the right path.

Comment from wizards_fusion

more gilbertology

i find it fascinating that gil used the word “respect” with mrs. pollin. the better word he should have used was “trust”.

i respect gil’s game.

i respect gil’s hardworking ethic.

i respect gil using his wealth to help the underprivledged.

however, i don’t know if i can trust him because he’s very capable of doing stuff like the gun-incident in the future. it may not be with guns – it could be with ninja kitanas on the bus. i don’t think the pollin’s trust his judgement either – and thus his imagery was removed from the same confines where he gained the most respect as a basketball player.

the trust between grunfeld and gilbert was icy and has thawed a bit. the respect, however, was still there all along.

there are only 2 people gil trusts in his life – himself and his pap. it really shows how egocentric he is to the world around him.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 15, 2010 at 3:53 PM

neal — sounds like you’re recommending our team be the 6 under contract, add Howard, Singleton & Livingston. Then add 3 draft choices. You think that team will win 30 games? I don’t.

A team needs to be built around a core — from 1 to 3 central players. Cleveland is built around LeBron. Orlando is built around Howard. The Lakers are built around Kobe and Gasol. OKC is built around Durant. Houston is built around Yao. Boston around its big 3.

That’s why we’re rebuiilding; we don’t have that core, those 1 – 3 guys.

I don’t think it’d be wise to bet on Gilbert being at the core of this team in the future. He might be, but I can’t see it as a reliable strategy to plan for that. The core we had with him, AJ and CB produced a middle of the pack team. The Wizards are under .500 in games started by Gilbert Arenas. Really don’t know that he’ll ever be as good as he was at his peak either.

Comment from gray16

i wouldn’t say livingston is the best pg we have had in three years

gilbert is obviously the best pg the wiz have had in recent years

antonio is the best pass first pg we have had in recent years

livingston is just shining on a horrible team. when his competition is boykins and foye at point, he is going to look better than he is. at the same time i hope he continues to get big minutes, and i hope nick gets some minutes tonight.

Tom, I’m not saying those guys will make us good. I’m just saying that’s who we’ll have – a lot of familiar faces to go with some new ones. I think all the returning guys are legitimate NBA players, but I agree with you that we need about 3 stars to be really good and at this point we have only one (apparently) and we have 3 of our starting jobs up for grabs.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 15, 2010 at 4:40 PM

Can we get a stud player in the upcoming draft?

At the top of the 2010 draft board are 4 guys who could become really terrific NBA players: John Wall, Evan Turner, DeMarcus Cousins and Derrick Favors. Three of them are freshmen — which of course makes them more speculative than one would hope. Still, it’s a very good group.

Below these 4, the drop off is steep. Aminu, who is currently the 5th pick in the mock draft, doesn’t have great numbers, and Cole Aldrich, listed 6th, is regarded as a likely backup in the league.

Extremely unlikely that we will we have the first or second worst record, and it’s unlikely that we’ll be 3d worst. Ping pong balls could roll our way, but we won’t have as many balls as NJ, Minnesota or GS.

The best/worst we’re likely to do record-wise will be 4th. We’d get a potentially *excellent* player (probably Cousins or Favors), or the balls could knock us down or lift us up. Up is always good. In this draft, down is very bad.

Comment from wizards_fusion
Time March 15, 2010 at 4:51 PM

imo, if the wiz don’t get a top 4 pick by chance, we don’t use the draft to rebuild.

being 4th worst record wise already has good odds for #1 pick (11.9%, assuming no team has duplicate records) and right now, the wiz are only percentage points ahead of indy for 5th worst. tack on another 9 game losing to the current one and the wiz will be 3rd worst record wise (15.6% for #1 pick, assuming no team has duplicate records).

tom mandel, those players you mentioned i would say are the most nba ready players, but the drop off after that isn’t as big as people think

you still have players that can develop great like:

greg monroe (i hope the wiz draft him)
donotas motiejunas
kalin lucas
quincy pondexter
avery bradley etc.
wes johnson
aminu

then you have guys who can come in and add a piece to your team

james anderson
cole aldrich
patrick patterson

the wiz shouldn’t expect to rebuild around the players they draft but they should expect to get some players that will be a big part of the process

like i said, barring getting wall or turner, the wiz would be very good getting:

greg monroe
kalin lucas (forgot he was in the draft, a great pg), sherron collins, or willie warren
lazar haywood, kyle singler, or trevor booker

Tom, I presume you listed those four in the order of their projected selection. What position do they play?

Comment from gray16
Time March 15, 2010 at 6:53 PM

evan turner is a sg/sf who can control the ball at run the point at times. he is much like a brandon roy type player, and imo is going to be the best player out of the draft next season. wall could and should catch up to him though.

wall is a pg, if you haven’t heard about him, he’s the total package. much like a d wade player, he has the ability to be a top scorer and get 6+ assists per game (with 5+ rebounds at the same time). right now he’s a better version of derrick rose with much more potential.

cousins is a banger and hard working pf/c much like al jefferson imo. the only thing holding him back is his emotional problems and tendency to foul a lot. to begin his nba career it will be rough, much like greg oden, as he will have many games cut short due to fouling and techs.

favors i’m not that high on, but is a very skilled pf. he has chris bosh type talent and could become a great pf, but for some reason i don’t see it happening.

figured i’d just put my intake on those 4.

d favors is NOWHERE near bosh, even if you compare them as freshmen at gtech. favors is a widebody pf that dominates down low – kinda like zach randolph this season.

favors has no shot at all – and it’ll be a long while before he can hit jumpers. maybe his job in the nba is only to get high % shots and doesn’t require him to learn to shoot.

as with your other comparison of the supposed top 4, i agree with the assessment.

Comment from Gilfanatic

Hey I’m listening to you! I definitely agree that we need better communication on defense. I think that defense is part of the problem… it seems like a lot of our team doesn’t know where to go on defense. Our offense isn’t that bad… but we just don’t seem to know where to be on the defensive end.

Comment from Gilfanatic

the team plays like a bunch of rookies, and that’s just about what they are. Add a few good picks and maybe we’ll have something next year. Flip can’t turn straw into gold.

the jazz announcers said, before commercial

1) wiz really need to think about how this team is going to be put together next season

2) wiz is going to showcase blatche as the main piece

3) mike miller makes the wiz look good (i’m not joking – they said this)

4) wiz shouldn’t take a chance at josh howard – just don’t know what type of player he’ll be after the acl injury and him being 30

we just need ONE player to just go for it & shake it up!!! Cannot keep putting it all on Blatche to make it happen….

The Wizards are a mess this year; Jazz announcers are wasting their time analyzing the situation. I’m not sure we could even beat UNC. Hopefully, we’ll get lucky in the draft; we’re certainly due for it.

If AB was better than what he is now, he may have 10 assists, but then again, is anyone cutting when they’re man is cheating on D?

I would love to be in the film room for this “de-briefing”

Comment from wizards_fusion

lol @ passtheball

the game’s a blowout – what else do you expect the jazz announcers to say?

i’d rather be hearing their opinions on the wiz than them talking about where they’re going to eat after the game.

Comment from Gilfanatic
Time March 15, 2010 at 11:13 PM

@2stepsaway- I agree with you. We can’t completely rely on Blatche for everything. He needs someone else out there helping him.

Wow@that last dunk by him.

Well atleast he’s showing out against the subs…lol…get him on the bench, no need for him to be on the floor now, unless they double team him and he can practice on passing when the man is cheating.

Coach, check the statistics and realize that Miller will provide positive contribution in the first 8 minutes ONLY. if you insist on playing him, give him the first 8 minutes and then send him to the whirlpool.

I’m really hoping we can keep Alonzo Gee for a little bit longer. I think we play a lot better when he’s in the game. It might be because he is just wanting to show us what he can do but I like what I am seeing from him right now.

Young does have natural ability, but, yes, he’s a long way from being an NBA talent. He’s cut back on dribbling, but nowhere near enough, and he’s got other big issues. I’d hate to see a good team get him because he’d come back to haunt us.

Comment from dcbutler357

This is kind of a two-way street. The coach needs to learn a player’s ability(s) and the player needs to learn the system in place, if there isn’t a fit….

“AB is still a work in progress…” – dcbutler357
My friend, McGee is a work in progress; Slick is a work in progress. AB is a piece of work! He has paid his dues. He was forced to play behind “I’ll get my numbers” for the past two years, but now if you would ask any GM in the league if they would rather have Jamison or Blatche at their 4 spot and you’ll get a 90% vote for Blatche.

Comment from HardCoreFan
Time March 15, 2010 at 11:42 PM

Okay, I just disagree with you guys. Most of the time the winning time will just dibble to ball until the end of the clock – it’s shows a little respect and not “in-your-face” kind of thing. I watch a lot of basketball and don’t see too many teams doing that. As for the Detroit game that was a little different because it was a special milestone. I didn’t have a problem with that I only wanted the Wiz to stop it from happening. I do agree that the Wiz should have been trying to stop them from doing it.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 15, 2010 at 11:52 PM

LOL….It wasn’t about AB VS AJ, it was about if AB is untouchable, as far as being on the team next year. The answer is no, if we get a formidable big man or superstar, to build around if it was an option.

This team has a lot of pieces, just not to the same puzzle.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 15, 2010 at 11:55 PM

Out of all the things to worry about, this about a fan favorite that doesn’t get any playing time getting on the books for two points. That’s not the straw that broke the camels back. IF we could have stopped anything, we could have stopped that. Use something as a sign that you have pride in your own team.

Comment from datonypony

Well, I would like to keep AB, because he is still young and we are rebuilding, not making a championship team.

Comment from neal

Both teams owe it to the fans to play the best they can. However, if up by a lot, the reserves should be playing.
