Game Day Detroit

8:54 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in…another game tripped up by turnovers and again the effort was there at the end as the Wizards battled back from a 12-point deficit to make it a 4-point game…It’s a shame because it spoiled a 30-point  night from Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee’s career high of 20-points…Flip Saunders talked in the post game about getting McGee to roll to the basket more and last night he ended up with eight dunks to tie Dwight Howard for most dunks in an NBA game this season….And the Wizards dominated on the boards and in the paint where the Hawks usually excel….but the turnovers. …Earl Boykins will play tonight….did not play last night as the Wizards manage the three games in three days.BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 8:00 PM —with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG

7:30 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in…sorry for the late check in…internet problems…and thanks for all the activity on the BLOG today….and yes jeffmalone1990 we need to get Pamela McGee back on at half-time…..and I love the naming of the dunks

7:50 PM  EST….starters are in….Foye, Miller, McGee,Blatche, Thornton…..Pistons will go Will Bynum, Richard Hamilton, Jason Maxiell, Tayshaun Prince, and Jonas Jerebko

@wizards_fusion

Dray had like 3 bad passes in the first quarter that was turnovers. After that he got called for traveling twice, got the ball striped once and got called for an offensive foul. = 7 turnovers

thanks for the clarification. i was busy doing the wiz blogging on my iphone and wasn’t paying close attention to the action on the court. i think i’m retiring from blogging live at the games. it is too much work. dj can continue to do his job without me interfering.

hey guys for those that missed the game last night, we put together a little package of every JaVale McGee dunk from last night. Yesterday, McGee joined Dwight Howard as the only two players in the NBA this season to have 8 dunks in a game.

gil is quirky, no way around it, but that doesn’t bother me. him changing his number is the least of my worries for him. i’d still rather have him on the team than miller, but that’s just my opinion. the only thing i don’t know about is josh howard and arenas being on the same team, i don’t know how that would work out, it could be great or it could be disastrous.

as for tonight, if the wiz continue playing like last night they should win. villanueva will probably do his usual of killing the wizards on one end, but dray will probably kill him on the other as well. stuckey being out will help a lot (sorry to hear about his situation though) so i think the wiz will pull this one out.

hope livingston gets some burn again. and nick vs gordon will probably be a battle off the bench.

al thornton should be able to beat tayshaun, but he’s been off lately. hopefully tonight he can have a good game. and hopefully these turnovers stop, or at least get lowered drastically.

I wanted to say that watching the game, Miller came out very agressive this game. He was looking for his shot, and passed and rebounded well in the 1st qtr, funny thing was as the game went on he became less aggressive?? Still a far better effort from him, although Joe Johnson seemed to really be getting his shot at will. I thought by far this was McGee’s best game as a pro, he defended and rebounded, and had a Dwight Howard night of dunks! He did make some mistakes, however what player doesn’t? He needs at least 25 min a game, great play sir

As far as Dray, great game for him, he had 4 TO’s in the 1st qtr and 7 for the game, however passing out of the double team is an issue that can be easily corrected. Just make the safe pass, not the cross court home run. However Dray’s shot selection and effort on both sides of the court was great to see, great game~

As far as Nick aka Slick, he is very streaky so I expected him to play well tonight, and look for him to do the same next game. He hit his 1st shot, and I thought his jumper set up his drives to the basket, overall a good game by Young and as a fan it was great to see.

Livingston had an ok game, shot selection was questionable however he did run the offense. Foye was really having a heard time wth Bibby, and Randy please do not settle for jumpers, go to the basket~

As far as Thorton, he needs to get into the flow of the game early, he is an ENERGY guy so he needs to get the ball into his spots early (we need a PG). I have no clue as to why Singelton cannot stick on a roster, however I REALLY hope he is a Wizard next year as well as Josh Howard (for the right price).

I read the following passage from Michael Lee of WaPo. I thought Flip made a very interesting comment about JaVale and Andray:

After the Houston Rockets got 14 fast-break points on Tuesday, Coach Flip Saunders commented on how Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee run differently depending on what end of the court they are on, leaving opportunities for opposing big men to get easy baskets.

“We run uphill on defense and downhill on offense. It’s like our court’s titled,” Saunders quipped.

- – -
Most casual observers would glance this quote over, but I shall not. The more I re-read those 14 words, the more my brain is forced to think what Flip meant.

– Is he saying that Blatche and McGee are lazy getting back on D?

– Is he saying that Blatche and McGee are out of position when getting back on D?

– Is he saying that Blatche and McGee don’t care about D as much as O? (kinda hard to believe this one because I think both guys pride themselves on playing solid defense)

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time March 12, 2010 at 2:40 PM

@WizF-I believe the Coach (IMO) is saying that those players only give energy and effort on one side of the floor, the offensive side. And the scouting reports suggest that the Wizards do not hustle back on D, and if you push the ball you can get some easy buckets.

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time March 12, 2010 at 2:43 PM

Hey Dave and Glenn, maybe you guys can get Pamela McGee as a halftime guest, to talk about McGee’s improvement this year…And when will we see a halftime show for the bloggers?

Comment from dlts20
Time March 12, 2010 at 4:10 PM

IDK if any of you saw this on the Raptors board but I found it interesting. What are you guys thoughts on it? Im the biggest Gil fan there is and I think he will mentally & physically be great next year so if all things were even, I wouldnt trade him for hardly anything but I still am very worried about him fitting in Flip’s system. I just think the PG’s are limited in it and the only shot they can get off is the quick pull up off the screen. Thats basically it.

I just dont know if he will ever be dynamic in this system but I think if he goes the to Raps or Magic then he will look insanely good. Thats why this is the 1st time that I would consider this trade since it gives us a guy who probably would be good in this type of system and some expirings even though Jose’s D sucks. I probably still wouldnt do it though because I just want to see Gil play with this Wiz team so bad. I want to see him play with guys like Blatche & McGee so bad. I think it could look special.

Nevermind about that trade fellas. I had no ideal that Calderon’s contract was for that much money and had that many years still left on it. I would never do that trade

Comment from dlts20
Time March 12, 2010 at 4:33 PM

No wonder why alot of Raps fans liked it. Thats what made me interested because every other team’s fans pretty much destroy all Arenas trades but they seemed to like it. Now I know why. I would never do that trade.

Comment from gray16
Time March 12, 2010 at 4:36 PM

nick has been hitting his shot, but i stil want him to keep driving. when he gets 5 or more ft attempts, he usually gets high numbers.

he can blow by plenty of people, and his handles are pretty decent, so i don’t see why he shouldn’t be the go to guy off of the bench. as we have seen over and over running plays doesn’t seem to work for 48 minutes, you need someone to take over at times, nick can do that.

but it’s going to take plays to be drawn up for nick iso’s for him to get to the line. if flip relies on him coming off of screens and spotting up all game, he is only reducing the good impact nick can have on the game.

as for mike miller, he can’t create a shot for himself. he took a couple of bad shots last night, but not many. i think he just needs to take a shot when he has room, but they should be mostly spot up shots. if he dribbles, he should go to the rim, AND NOT jump unless he is shooting.

Comment from neal
Time March 12, 2010 at 5:01 PM

Well, I thought I would go for any trade to send off Arenas and his contract but I guess I draw the line at that one. Just gets us another problem. Maybe we’ll keep Gil another year to see if he fits in. If not, we’d only have $62M in salary to buy him out of instead of $80M.

All those suggestions are good for a nickname for the rubberband man. Or are you guys too young to remember that song?

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 12, 2010 at 5:30 PM

Question,

I keep hearing about or talking about “Flip’s System”, I really, honestly don’t know what Flip’s system entails. Can anyone or has Flip expounded on what this system requires?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 12, 2010 at 5:41 PM

In ‘07-08 and again in ‘08-09, Jose Calderon was one of the most productive point guards in the league. He is having an off year compared to what he has done before, but he is still a very good player; and he’s young enough to get back to, or near to, his previous productivity.

Obviously, we couldn’t trade Gilbert for him straight up — the salaries don’t match. But, realize, we only have six guys under contract. It might well be possible to structure a trade w/ Toronto or involving a third team that would work for us.

But, the fact that someone on a message board suggests it doesn’t mean that anyone has anything like that in mind.

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time March 12, 2010 at 5:48 PM

@dcbuler-you bring a valid point, “What is the system?”. I mean most teams take on the personality of the coach, so what is Flip’s bread and butter? Is it offense, is it defense?

Great question, and not sure we will get the answer this year!

Comment from datonypony
Time March 12, 2010 at 6:52 PM

22 different players in a Wizards uniform this year, I would say CRAZY, LOL…..However from what I have seen this year, it is a fight to stay optimistic, but I dream in HD! So I am happy with Thorton, Blatche, McGee, Singelton so far and I guess I would say Josh Howard for the right contract. Hopefully Nick and others will sway me with there play from now until the end of the year.

Poor Andray. He just can’t catch a break from Flip. Did anyone hear the pregame show? Flip was blaming Andray for the loss of his best white dress shirt. It seems, according to Flip, that Andray caused him to wash the colors with the whites and his best dress shirt came out with pink streaks.

It’s got to be tough when the coach rides you for every little thing.

boykins has always gotten beaten on d, when he was in the game and doing good, that just meant that the wizards were outscoring the other team (and not because of d)

please flip, give the ball to nick, the man has the ability to put up points on the board, why run plays through boykins, singleton, and mcgee when nick is in there. give him the ball and let him create, your offense isn’t working point blank and period.

Man we have by far the worst PG play in the league. I think we have the worst PG play in even the D-Leauge or College. In there defense though, I will say that I think Flip’s O looks horrible alot of times and all the plays are too long, too drawn out, phases guys out the Offense, and limits others espically the PG’s. Its just a bad combination of poor PG play and a poorly designed Offense on alot of occasions. Even the Pistons fans say that Flip is the complete opposite of an Offensive Genuis that people make him out to be. I guess we will have to wait until next year when we get Gil and some others to find out for sure but I also hope that he either makes some changes or adds a little more to the Offense because its so predictable at times. In his defense though, Foye & Boykins suck

I agree with dlts20 regarding the total lack of offensive continuity. Flip is supposed to be an offensive genius? He got that reputation because Rip could run his butt off around picks and shoot the ball without looking..he still can, for that matter. He also had Chauncey, a point guard who could play the game as a point guard.

The Wizards offense is static except when some players make something happen on their own.

I am beginning to think that Flip’s offensive strategy for the 3-spot is “once you get the ball, shoot”. CB played that way and now we have another “the-ball-stops-here” player in Thornton. Actually, I think that CB may have passed more often.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 12, 2010 at 11:59 PM

Whew, the most incredible part about the rest of this season is that since we have a point guard, and Foye isn’t one, there’s no reason to continue using Foye as the primary point guard. There is no system, so there’s no use in saying that ANYONE doesn’t know it as a reason for playing time. There is no substitute for a point guard. Passing a split second later, or making a pass too far to the right or left, is the difference between a turnover and an assist.

Even though AB has made great strides since the trade, he seems to play “below the rim” too much for his size.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 13, 2010 at 12:00 AM

Gotabig, that system was in place before Flip got there, he was just a “figure-head”

Comment from gray16
Time March 13, 2010 at 12:13 AM

flip’s system is great with 5 veterans or 5 people who give 150% every night

unfortunately, this is a young team, and everyone can’t give 150 every night, especially on back to back… to backs lol

flip’s system looks worse all the time, he doesn’t have a basis for it. of course he will draw up plays for blatche, caron (back then), etc, but it doesn’t help create but for one person.

the plays have one purpose behind it, and if that doesn’t work, the whole offense breaks down.

with a team with high iq, they can work through this. with a team with high energy, they can make something out of nothing, especially with offensive rebounding. but when the wizards aren’t able to play like this (doesn’t even have to be for a game, but just a quarter without this) the whole offense goes to h e double hockey stick.

flip’s offense just isn’t good. hope he is gone at the end of the season.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense

I guess I’ll have to resign myself to understanding that Flip either ignores our advice, or simply doesn’t read the blog. Hard to believe either of those possibilities, but it must be true otherwise we’d be far more successful. If I were a betting person, I bet that he doesn’t read the blog. If he did, he’d see the absolute logic of all the posts and immediately incorporate everything into his game plan.

On behalf of those blogger with whom I am in agreement, I’ll try once again: @FLIP – Miller, Earl and Oberto should not see one second of playing time unless we do not have enough players to continue.

I will be amazed if any GM offers Miller a contract next year. With all due respect to his stats, he is a truly horrible player who plays a absolutely terrible floor game which detracts from the Wizards potential. I’m an AARP member and I could intercept the passes that he throws…talk about telegraphing “soft” passes into the passing lanes. Even when his passes get where they are supposed to be, they are so late that the timing of the play is cooked. He’s a going-through-the-motions washed up spot shooter who can’t seem to maintain his balance when running. Might be a neurological thing, or perhaps he’s just plain un-coordinated. He runs with his center of gravity about two feet in front of his torso, which causes him to kiss the floor a lot…but then, that makes it look like he’s Mr. Hustle.

Earl is too short to see over the defense and too short to defend. He is a smart player who can get open for his own shots, but he can’t seem to see any other open player. For every point he gets for the Wiz, he gives up two. He’s not really what you might select as your proto-typical point guard.

Oberto is Oberto…he’ll give you tough minutes and send the opposition to the foul line enough to hurt you.

PLEASE, let’s not see any of them again this year except in warmups.

DCB – We don’t disagree too often, but I believe that AB picks his spots. If you have an opportunity to watch warmup drills, while McGee and Slick are demonstrating their high-flying dunking acts, ‘Dray just lays the ball in the basket. You don’t average over 10 boards a game if you can’t jump. We’ve all seen him make some spectatular dunks, but only when it’s the best option. ‘Dray is more of a finesse player. I’m certain that he’d prefer to be the NBA’s first 6′11″ point guard. LOL

Did anyone notice Andray’s improvement in passing out of the double team tonight?

This guy has become a really, really, good player. If the refs would give him some respect he would have had 30 tonight. He and Javalle are the only reasons (except maybe for Alonzo) to watch the Wiz anymore. The other guys have their moments but just don’t make plays on either end of court on a consistent basis.

The fact that Andray does not make a lot of high-flying dunks will probably save a lot of wear and tear on his body and add years to his career.

I enjoyed watching Frank Layden coach not because he is the king of x’s and o’s, but because he was a crazy s.o.b. on the sidelines (he goes nuts more than Chuck Daly), he was great with 1-liners with reporters, and he was generally a funny guy – acted as ambassador for the NBA as a coach and statesman (kinda like how Shaq has been the NBA ambassador for the league as an internationally known star player).

One of the things that I most admire about Blatche’s game is his unselfishness. I’ve seen him tip rebounds to teammates or grab a rebound simultaneously with a teammate and give it up to the teammate. A selfish player would want the rebound to pad his stats. ‘Dray truly doesn’t care about stats.

The past two games I’ve watched him looking for opportunities to get Slick the ball in a position where Slick could be successful and thereby get him started. Tonight AB passed up a ten-footer to give Slick a ten-footer. Hello, AB and CB…that’s what leaders do.

Comment from wizards_fusion

speaking of blatche

flip is about 2 more straws away from having me go back to throw urine bags at his car for being a liar.

before the 5 games in 6 nights journey started, flip mentioned he’ll have to balance out the minutes amongst all so that no one would get burned out.

after 2 games in 2 nights, blatche is averaging over 37 minutes out of 48 per regulation. at this rate, blatche is going to get worn out by tomorrow.

if blatche goes down with an injury due to flip’s disregard for the team’s best player, i can never forgive “coach”

Comment from dcbutler357

No one can deny that AB has shown that he belongs. If he stops playing below the rim when he does the reverses, fadeaways down low, he may get more calls down low, and less blocks on those reverses. Doing reverse layups is an ally against defenders (using the rim), but since that is now one of his signature moves, the defenses are playing him now to do the reverse, instead of going straight up. Just a lil tweaking of his game.

ROFL…..HE’LL NEVER BE A HIGH FLYING ACT…LOL…But a nasty dunk on someone can ignite a team (well not this year, I don’t even think pouring lighter fluid, can get this team ignited, FLIP would just come and put it out…)

Comment from weswalk
Time March 13, 2010 at 12:31 PM

dcbutler357, AB does get his nasty dunk ever now and then, I have seen at least 2 or 3 in the past few games. However if you were told that you could have a 6′ 11″ 24 year old 20 and 12 player ( with assists and ball handling skills to boot) but he was not a high flyer, I am positive that all of us would jump at the opportunity to obtain such a player. I dont see Dallas complaining about Dirk. While AB may never be Dirk, right now he is our Dirk and I think we should all be happy we have him.

Does anyone else observe Javale Attempting to set picks on offense. It driving me crazy just to watch. It is clear that he either (1) does not know how or (2) has no desire to do so. Almost every times he starts toroll to the basket as soon as contact is made. Is it possible that Wes Unseld could help this kid. On second thought he only has to look at how Singleton sets a screen.

Javale is one of my favorites (along with Young and Blatche) but he has so much to learn. However, I don’t believe that this organization has shown any real patience with him. He was drafted as a pure project and now because of their situations with the ex vets, I think they are expecting to much to fast. I am referring to Flip’s comments in today’s Post re: Javale’s play against the Pistons. You very rarely here negative comments from the man re: anyone but AB, NY and Javale. I am not saying that a lot of it is not warranted, but part of his job is to improve the investment the club has made in these players. In fact, it is the responsibilty of both players and management to ensure that projected potential is achieved.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 13, 2010 at 1:16 PM

WesWalk,

I NEVER said that I wanted him to be a “high-flyer”, High flyer was brought into the conversation by GABBO/I call him Getabig(from earlier blogging) I merely want him to go up strong underneath the basket, which will increase his chances of scoring or going to the free throw line, rather than getting the shot blocked or why he’s not getting to the line, like everyone wants him to (some feel he is not getting respected by the refs). If you’re doing reverse layups or fadeaway shots underneath the rim, you’re not getting a foul shot…..All this other stuff, is everyone adding to the initial opinion instead of addressing the statement of what he can improve on.

In regards to ANYONE on this team setting a pick, Foye doesn’t even wait for his man to get set, before he makes his move….lol….half the time he will cut the other way…lol…I don’t even know why that was mentioned…lol…

As far as comparing AB to any other player, what’s the point, that wasn’t even the point?

AB is going to be/and already is a good ball player, AND if AB is the best we have, then we need more around him. This reminds me of when Juwan Howard was the best thing that we had and it wasn’t that he was that good, it was just that the wiz/bullets were that bad.

Javale is a role player until he learns other things. Expecting him to double/double each night is a stretch right now. Against ATL he wasn’t doing offensive moves or anything, he was playing a role of crashing the boards or cutting to the basket for easy shots. THAT IS what having a true point or other weapons on the floor will do for you. A team will help to “mask” one’s short-comings and elevate your strengths….
