Game Day Hawks

7;06 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in…..after a great night….The Ballers Bowl  a benefit for our charity Wizards Care was held last night at Lucky Strike…..Not only was it a good time for a great cause but blogger 2StepsAway was there and I saw her bowl a strike. The schedule has been so busy since the All Star Break it was nice to see this “new” team get together and have fun with the fans and bond. It is a group of guys that are young and eager to make a mark. I think for the most part that has been reflected in their play although this past week there have been some stumbles. Wizards need to find some offensive rhythm. On Tuesday the Wizards had seven assists on their first ten field goals….but then struggled. It was during this time the Rockets took over and the Wizards turned the ball over.Tonight’s game is the make up of the game postponed by the blizzard…only rain in the forecast…..BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 7:00 PM —with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG

6:04 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in….here we go …the start of three games in three nights….look for Shaun Livingston to get some more playing time tonight….Hawks are smarting after a loss to the Knicks

6:40 PM EST…starters are in…Foye, Miller, McGee,Thornton, Blatche…Hawks…..Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson, Al Horford, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams

PG- Mike Bibby vs. Randy Foye-
SG- Joe Johnson vs. Mike Miller-
SF- Marvin Williams vs. Al Thornton=
PF- Josh Smith vs. Andray Blatche-
C – Al Horford vs. JaVale McGee-

This is going to be a tough game at every position.

PG-Mike Bibby is not having the kind of year we are used to seeing from him. His numbers are down averaging 8.8ppg and 4.1ast, but I still think he can out play Randy Foye. Randy Foye needs to zero in on the basket; his shot has been off a lot lately.

SG- Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford are going to kill Mike Miller and Nick Young. Pray for a bad game from them, that’s the only way the Wizards have a chance.

SF- I think this is the best area on the floor the Wizards will have any advantage. I think Al Thornton can take Marvin Williams. I think I would play James Singleton against Maurice Evans.

PF- Another learning curve for Andray Blatche. I don’t think in the last 10-11 games Dray had to play a physically gifted player like Josh Smith. Will be interesting watching this match-up.

C-Another interesting area on the floor that will be fun to watch. Horford is a center in a PF’s body, much like David Lee. Horford and Zaza Pachulia will out muscle McGee. McGee will get at least 5 blocks tonight. I look for a lot of fouls from McGee in this one.

I’m waiting for the next move from Andray — he’s been scouted and is being held down. How does he respond? I’m sure he and the staff are looking at lots of film; here’s hoping they come up with something.

I have a feeling we are going to win tonight.

Comment from Rick
Time March 11, 2010 at 11:01 AM

I think the staff needs to come up with one or 2 more plays for Dray. Right now they run that low-block to low-block screen (usually set by Mike Miller) for Dray. It’s a great play and it gets Dray the ball in a threatening position, but if you run the same play over and over, defenses will start to figure it out.

I’d like to see more of him coming off a low screen and receiving the ball at the high post (foul-line to the top of the key) so that he can shoot the jumper or drive either left or right to the hoop. I’d also like to see him make quick and strong moves from there. ONE good dribble and a shot or pass.

I’d also like to see more pick and rolls with Dray and Mike Miller, rather than dray and foye or dray and boykins.

@millie-I like your breakdown and I tend to agree with you and your observations for tonights game.

Also any updates on Arenas? Just wondering?

Good luck tonight Wiz~

tough game for the wiz tonight for sure.

the wiz are going to need a big game out of andray blatche. josh smith will most likely give him problems as he will be able to match dray’s speed, quickness, and power pretty easily while being able to jump much higher than him helping him on both ends.

so just in case andray doesn’t step up, someone else is going to need to have a big game, but who? al thornton could be the best bet, he is going to need to shoot the ball well and hit his fts to do that though. foye? i doubt it, but mabye he will have one of his on nights. miller? the more he shoots the more he misses, the less he shoots, the less he makes. don’t think so.

then there’s nick young, coming off of a great game. but there’s a problem. first, nick doesn’t seem to get the offense run through him at all, unless there is less than 10 seconds left on the shot clock and boykins gave him the ball. so how do well help nick have a good game again…

i think the answer is mr. livingston. actually, i think he is the answer to a couple of problems. give him the keys and let him drive for a game, what do you have to lose?

watching the NCAA games right now, and speaking of the draft, here are some guys that are impressing me thus far:

Cole Aldrich (espn predicts us to draft him if we go number 8 in the draft)

Greg Monroe

Wesley Johnson

and although the first round of the ACC tournament starts today, I am also impressed with Al-Farouq Aminu…….player would do some damage in the NBA if he got some more muscle and a longer ranged jump shot

Comment from dlts20
Time March 11, 2010 at 2:49 PM

No doubt Shaun is much better for us than Foye & Boykins and there is also no doubt that we lack talent after the trades and the Howard injury but I still think some of our Offensive struggles are due to the system. I still think its way too much halfcourt stuff, way too deliberate, phases guys out too much, and is limited in alot of ways. We dont get any easy shots ever. People rip Blatche for the 5to’s but think about how much Blatche is scoring and how many easy shots does he get. 95% of his stuff comes one on one. Its the same for about everyone on our team and they arent easy one on one plays. We just look so basic.

Again, for the PG’s from a scoring standpoint I think its super hard. I think they only scoring PG’s get in Flip’s system is the quick pull up J off the screen. He has no hard tight screens where the PG goes one on one with the big or goes hard around the pick. He designs it so our PG’s always go lateral instead of North & South. Its always either designed to swing it back to the big or for the PG to shoot a quick pull up jumper which isnt an easy shot to make. I checked Flip’s stats and pretty much none of his PG’s had high shooting percentages even though they would put up some numbers. I also think most of there assist are fake and more of system assist by just making basic passes go guys coming off screens or whatever.

We run that same play for Blatche every time where he sets like 3 screens, then circles from one side of the court to the other until he gets the ball with like 8sec or less on the shot clock. The plays are way too slow and its always like 2 man plays where everyone else just stands around. I like how Flip is doing something that Ive been wanting forever in that he tries to take advantage of matchups but I still think he does it wrong. If he says Blatche has the matchup in this game then he may start it running every play to Blatche while basically no one else is involved. Thats what he use to do with AJ and it would phase Caron out just like it does Thorton at times now. What if this was the game that Thorton had it in him to score 40? He has no chance if he doesnt really get any touches. I just think the PG”s need more freedom, we need more quick hitters as a team instead of long drawn out plays, and the players just need more freedom. Its more of a system offense where the guys are like robots alot.

I think having a real PG who is fluid like Livingston will help alot but Flip still needs to adjust more, espically next year because IDK if Gil can ever go off in this system. Its nearly impossible for the PG to get to the rim on a regular basis the way its designed, and you times that by 10 when the PG will be the best player like Gil so the D will key on him more. You could argue that Gil will be good but very dependant on others in this system. Hopefully Flip meets his players halfway because I cant stand to watch the O we have now, lack of talent or not. You can tell its still more than that and its been that way all year. We get nothing easy. Everything is difficult. I wish we would start Shaun though because Foye is so boring while having NO PG skills and Boykins just overdribbles and thinks he’s Gil by trying to do everything himself. I think Foye can be good at the 2 in this system though

Comment from Jaba
Time March 11, 2010 at 3:11 PM

Hope Livingston gets another chance to play at least 20 minutes tonight! These next games will tell if he has a chance to stick around. Go Shaun! Go Wizards!

LET’S WIN!!!

Comment from neal
Time March 11, 2010 at 3:59 PM

Pertinent thoughts millie & Rick.

I agree in part dlts20, but I think a lot of the problem is the PG (Foye) not getting into the offense quick enough and moving the ball enough. I agree that Livingston should play more at this point. Let’s see if after 10-12 games he still looks like the best PG we have.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 11, 2010 at 6:04 PM

The key to Livingston is that he’s looking at the whole floor, as a point guard should. He also gets to the top of the key, while observing the floor and then makes his move. The adjustment, once the guys caught on, was to get to the open spot on the floor. He dished out about 3 layups in a five minute stretch alone. His ability to move towards the rim enables easier shots for us and negates some of the one on one moves that players have to make, just to get a shot.

As far as dealing with Atlanta, it’s hard to see them as a contender, unless they learn to buckle down and focus. I haven’t paid too much attention to them, but if the coaches have looked at their losses and try to implement what other teams have done, this could be a good game. Singleton will play a huge role for us if we were to win, because there’s no way AB and JM can hold down the fort, for the whole game. If they do, we really have something to talk about for next year. oberto has nothing coming against atl, I hope he does well, but ATL is just too athletic

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 11, 2010 at 6:37 PM

If we are giving Shaun Livingston minutes in games we think we have a chance to win, then we must considering whether we’re going to keep him for the rest of the season (I believe you can only give a guy two 10-day contracts). We’ll find out more about that tonight.

We might have a money issue about keeping him, i.e. a luxury tax issue, although I doubt it.

Is Ernie interested in him for next year? What would make you think so? There’s plenty to make a person think not — because of his knee I mean.

If he does stay, does get good minutes, does hold up physically and does play well, then he will no doubt get looked at by a number of teams in the off-season. Probably we’d be one of them.

Can’t say much more than that.

Comment from Tom Mandel

W4L — Aminu. He is a little improved this year over last year, which is what you want in an NCAA player. He’s young, a sophomore. Impossible to know whether he’ll be successful in the league. Btw, do you remember that we had his older brother in SL last year.

Aldrich is a good college center. DraftExpress calls him as a role-playing back up center in the league.

Greg Monroe — don’t know if he’ll be successful in the league.

Wesley Johnson is having a terrific junior season. Doesn’t have great size for an NBA forward, but… he could be good. Be great if he could play the 2 in the league.

Comment from neal
Time March 11, 2010 at 7:06 PM

Yes, we can only give two 10-day contracts and Livingston is on his 2nd. If he continues to play well I presume he’ll get signed for the remainder of the season.

We got beat by a better team, really a much better team, although they didn’t play all that well except for FG% It was at least a fun game to watch. And Andray played well — except for the 7 turnovers! JaVale was fun too.

The offense definitely looks better when Shaun is at the point than when Randy is. Then again, Donald Duck is a better point guard than Randy Foye.

But that doesn’t imply that Shaun played well. He went 0-3, turned it over 2 times and committed 4 fouls in less than 18 minutes. He did have a steal and 4 assists, but he is a long way from being a functional NBA player at this point. Randy, on the other hand, is a certified rally killer.

Nick got some burn, shot it ok, and had one of his best games of the season — that’s not to say he played all that well, but better than usual.

i think the luckiest the wizards could get is to

a) buyout gil
b) gil resigns for less, while the wizards still save money, and returns to being a great player again
c) draft a great player in draft (could be pg, sg, big man whatever, just good lol)
d) blatche continues to grow and mature
e) chris bosh, joe johnson, or amare signs with wizards (of course lebron would be one of the best to add but trying to keep it a little reasonable)

will this happen, no, but i would love to see it happen lol

but a part of me still wants to see gilbert on the wizards, but i won’t be mad if he is gone.

Some random thoughts…

1) Not even Josh Smith can contain Andray Blatche
2) Al is a curious player. Sometimes he is a true impact player , other times he is invisible. He goes to extremes.
3) These last stretch of games will be good for Javelle to learn how to play center.
4) Can someone explain why paperwork needs to be filed to change a uniform number?
5) So Agent Scapegoat wants the number 6… is that as in “sixshooter”?
6) Does anyone know how Josh’s knee operation went? If he is still out there, the Wiz win a bunch more games. They just don’t have the horses right now.
7) It looks like the old Celts spent their last bit of energy “wolfing” on Andray. It appears those old guys are pooped out.
8) In the Off-season, Randy can work on finishig at the rim with his left hand.
9) Nice to see Nick pick up his play.
10) The Hawks were missing an addtional scorer and they got it with Crawford. This team could make the finals.
11) Hope to see more of Alonso Gee. Try him at the point, Flip.
12) Flip just finished his press conference by chastizing Andray for dunking on Josh Smith at the end of the game “You don’t want to be doing that to such a great shot blocker” It cost us the game!”

IMHO the Wizards played a great game against a very good team. This was, once again, a game that the Wizards might have won with a couple of breaks. They played with energy and focus and determination.

I can’t fault any one player for the loss, nor can I (hang onto your hats here fellow bloggers) fault the coaching even though I would have liked to see some different combinations at certain times,

The officiating was TERRIBLE. Those three characters are a joke…but they were bad for both teams.

I was happy to see the three players whom I consider key pieces of the 2010-2011 team play well. McGee was spectacular. How about 10/13 from the field. He needs to get more than 9 boards in 38:10, but he was a force. As Glenn and Scott pointed out in the post game show, he also has to learn to stay on his feet when defending the post player…but his progress in the past 7 games gets the hopes up.

‘Dray was 12/19 from the field and 6/6 from the line with 10 boards, 3 steals, and an assist…great game despite his 7 TO. He has become the heart-and-soul of this team. Other teams are recognizing his skills and are running a double-team at him from the opening tap. If Flip can provide some established passing routes from the double-team, the Wiz should get some easy baskets and the TOs should be reduced. Flip’s comment that ‘Dray is trying to make the spectacular pass rather than the easy pass is probably on target. IMO, ‘Dray is trying to make the pass that leads immediately to a basket. The easy shot that results from a good pass out of the double-team usually occurs after the next pass…He’s a smart young man; he’ll get it quickly.

Slick played really solid “D”, and he was 5/11 from the field and 6/6 from the line. He also had two steals and an assist. He deserves continued big minutes.

The three hombres (’Dray, McGee and Slick) were 26 for 43 from the field…over 60%. It won’t take much more help to win a lot of games if they can shoot like that.

Thornton and Singleton probably have to get their second-wind since they have been playing many more minutes per game than previously. They both had 7 rebounds, but their shooting was terrible (sure sign of tired legs).

Randy was 5/11 from the field with 4 assists and 2 steals, but he also had 3 turnovers. He tried to take over the game in the 4th quarter by looking for his shot first. I believe that he had three consecutive misses at crucial times. However, that does demonstrate that the guy has the guts to take it on his shoulders. While I was disappointed with the results, I was appreciative of the effort.

I liked what I saw from Gee..he can leap. I loved his dunk. It had to make him feel good.

Livingston’s still rehabing a leg, but he is our best real point guard. I’d really like to see a lot of him at the point with Slick at the 2-spot.

Early in the first quarter, I thought that Mike Miller had finally decided to play basketball for the Wizards, but then he reverted to form. It was almost as though he wanted to demonstrate that he still had “it”, but wasn’t going to display “it” throughout the entire game.

Onward to Detroit. If we play to our potential rather than to the other team’s potential, we should get a “W”.

but at the same time, it does seem like the first person that flips brings up in these losses is andray. just look at previous interviews after games, i mean he’s not lying, but i just don’t remember him doing this with tawn or butler…

i just can’t remember a post game conference coming on and starting with flip saying “well, butler had a bad night, i think he shot 2 for 25 and had 5 tos, he just had a rough game, antawn played a little too selfishly he had 1, whoops i mean 0 assists… again”

Isn’t Mike Miller #6? Gil of all people shouldn’t be assuming who will be here next year and who won’t.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 12, 2010 at 9:34 AM

Like Gotabig, I was happy to see an active game from Nick. He did play very good on the ball defense, tho he got beaten a few times off of screens — that will happen… He did not turn the ball over, had a couple of steals, blocked a shot and even had an assist. If I remember right, he seemed to look much better on offense when he was in w/ Livingston.

Dray did play well even w/ the turnovers. If he had avoided a few of those it would have been a game near his best (and… we might have won).

I also agree with the comment that Randy is ready to play and doesn’t back away. Unfortunately, he doesn’t really have the size for a 2. He has never been much of a point guard — wasn’t one in college at all.

Livingston is really hobbled by lack of quickness alas. Not surprised to see his shot inconsistent after so little play; that’ll come back I expect. Just have to hope he can push his physical limits a bit. Wish him the best wherever he winds up.

Mike Miller is being asked to play more minutes than he can at this stage of his career. He started strong then kind of lost it. I don’t mind (or like!) the risky passes — he also made some good ones — but his shot shortens and flattens as the game progresses. I don’t see the point of the criticism; it’s just where he’s at as an athlete right now.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 12, 2010 at 9:36 AM

JaVale is progressing; that’s for sure. Keep giving him minutes! Keep giving Nick minutes too.

Post article on Howard — he’s like to stay w/ us, and it seems we’re interested. At the right price, he’d certainly be a good pick up.

I don’t get this decision by Gil to change his number. Agent Zero is central to his brand.

Comment from neal
Time March 12, 2010 at 9:53 AM

Yes, it’s a good article on Howard, and I really hope we get him back. I do hope, however, that he comes at a heavily discounted salary due to his proneness to injury. We don’t want another Etan Thomas experience.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 12, 2010 at 10:03 AM

The reason that he is changing his number “the day he was suspended by the nba” is really dramatic. I get so tired of his rationale for doing things….good or not I’m about 75% wishing that he would go somewhere else with the ignorance. If he stays, I hope the new ownership sits him down and gives him something to think about.

Comment from vitality08
Time March 12, 2010 at 10:03 AM

The fact that Agent Zero is central to his brand is probably the very reason he is changing his number. His thought process is probably to start “fresh” next season. that was his plan this season also and we see how that turned out.

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time March 12, 2010 at 1:07 PM

I wanted to say that watching the game, Miller came out very agressive this game. He was looking for his shot, and passed and rebounded well in the 1st qtr, funny thing was as the game went on he became less aggressive?? Still a far better effort from him, although Joe Johnson seemed to really be getting his shot at will. I thought by far this was McGee’s best game as a pro, he defended and rebounded, and had a Dwight Howard night of dunks! He did make some mistakes, however what player doesn’t? He needs at least 25 min a game, great play sir :!:

As far as Dray, great game for him, he had 4 TO’s in the 1st qtr and 7 for the game, however passing out of the double team is an issue that can be easily corrected. Just make the safe pass, not the cross court home run. However Dray’s shot selection and effort on both sides of the court was great to see, great game~

As far as Nick aka Slick, he is very streaky so I expected him to play well tonight, and look for him to do the same next game. He hit his 1st shot, and I thought his jumper set up his drives to the basket, overall a good game by Young and as a fan it was great to see.

Livingston had an ok game, shot selection was questionable however he did run the offense. Foye was really having a heard time wth Bibby, and Randy please do not settle for jumpers, go to the basket~

As far as Thorton, he needs to get into the flow of the game early, he is an ENERGY guy so he needs to get the ball into his spots early (we need a PG). I have no clue as to why Singelton cannot stick on a roster, however I REALLY hope he is a Wizard next year as well as Josh Howard (for the right price).

I have really stop worrying about the Wizards winning as long as they are hustling and getting some experience.

Wow KBrown just got ejected. Earl missed one of the free throws – we cannot afford to miss the free ones!
