Game Day Boston

8:22 AM EST….Dave Johnson checking in…..Arrived here in Boston after the team practiced yesterday AM….typically there is not a practice the morning after a night game when we travel but clearly the need to go over a few things. This new Wizards team is still learning. Al Thornton is adjusting to increased playing time and the Wizards need him back in the flow to have success. And as we have talked about Nick Young  is certainly due for a good game to help provide a boost off the bench. James Singleton continues  to impress with just good old fashioned hard-work. BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 8:00 PM —with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG

6:55 PM EST….Dave and Glenn checking in from the Garden….the Wizards have signed Alonzo Gee—a 6′6″ swingman from Alabama–who had played with the Austin Toros in the D League and averaged 21 points-per-game. Gee was not drafted last year. Mike Harris has been released. The Celtics have signed veteran Michael Finley who played in 25 games this year with the Spurs.

7:38 PM EST…starters are in…Foye, Miller, McGee, Blatche, and Thornton for the Wizards…Celtics…will have Rondo, Ray Allen, Perkins, Pierce, Garnett

yep, definitely a nice article on livingston, i’d really like to see this guy get more minutes, the wiz really need a pg

it was also cool to see ron thompson on nba tv yesterday, he and e snow did a good job with analyzing

as for today, this will be a difficult game for the wiz, they will need their key pieces to play well today and will need to get back to moving the ball. the bench will also need to come in and do well.

hope the wiz pull out a win on national tv, and i hope blatche reintroduces his self to the world

“Chemistry is the composition, behavior, structure, and properties of matter.”…or in the case of this discussion, a professional basketball team.

If a player has made it to the NBA, he’s got game. He’s one of the best in the world at what he does. So why does one group of talented players succeed and another group of talented players fail?

Obviously, the level of the talent has to be taken into consideration; the more talented the players, the better the chance for success. But would a team made up of twelve clones of KG, or twelve clones of Kobe, or twelve clones of D’ Wade beat the Nets. I would bet the ranch that the answer is “No”. The skill mix of the Nets would overcome the specifically-superior but more limited skills of the Clones. There is more to a winning team that just talented players. The selection of the correct combination of players with diverse skill sets; along with the willingness of the players with those skill sets to play within their means and to their strengths; to listen to, and implement instruction provided by the coaches; to display an approach to the game that places winning over personal accomplishments; and to be dedicated to play as hard and as smart as they can at all times, is what makes one combination of players succeed where others fail.

Most folks would call that team chemistry.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 7, 2010 at 11:41 AM

Agreed, you need guys at every position. And since guys tend to play the same position as they move from team to team, this is not really an issue in re: “better players equals better team equals better record” which, in short, is what I’m arguing. And the studies do take this into account. I.e. a player tends to put up the same kinds of results *at the same position* moving from team to team.

You could also argue that GMs tend to trade for a guy because they need his kind of skills, so there too you would assume he’s being asked to do the same things moving from team to team.

These things don’t invalidate Gotabig’s point. Yet, it seems pretty obvious looking at the league that the teams that succeed do have better players than the teams that don’t.

And it also seems we say “good chemistry” when we see a successful team — i.e. it’s success that makes you think of “chemistry.” A team with not such good players could have excellent chemistry and not succeed because the guys just aren’t good enough. The team could be maximizing its potential and still not win a lot of games. Would we notice the “chemistry” in that case?

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 7, 2010 at 11:55 AM

I agree with Tom on this one 100%, not that he needs my backing to be confident. We saw what the team became without a true point guard. It’s not about Foye being good, it’s about Foye being a point guard, it’s about having people in other positions, it’s about Boston getting good players and Ainge/Doc becoming great rather than being ushered out of the door…..Same thing goes for Eddie Jordan, lose your point guard, without a decent replacement, and you’re out the door. So, call it chemistry, but if you don’t have the chemicals, you might just have H20.

Milwaukee beat cleveland decisively withOUT Lebron last night. Jamison had 20 in the first half and was “shut down” by milwaukees D in the second half. Numbers were a LIL better 11-18. FT % was 50, so still about the same output and STILL not enough to carry a team. Safe to say that we expected too much out of them???

Gotta have more than one or two pieces to achieve success….

@ dcbutler

so, what is your suggestion to have really good players on the Wiz (or OKC, your adopted team) without overpaying them?

right now, all the really good players on the thunder are, like, in his rookie contract. when everyone gets paid a lot more, they won’t be able to hold onto all their assets because inevitably, some will want to leave ” championship aspirations” for money.

so, going back to the wiz – the gm purged most of the heavy contracts and are now stocked with second-rate (and lower) players. the draft can only do so much because talent alone doesn’t equate to longevity in the pros. as much as OKC has done right, we also can see that portland’s potential has taken a bigger hit for not making the correct crucial decisions when they’re faced with them. the wiz have flexability now and i myself don’t know if the team should gamble all the chips into the draft (like seattle/okc did) or gamble with tinkering “proven” players in their primes and go that route.

“@ tyrone2000 – Thanks. Glad to see that we can agree on something”

ROFL…Classic getabig quote, I wonder WHO hasn’t received that note of thanks from you…..LOL

@Wiz_fusion.
You are going to have to pay to win, unless your franchise has a reputation for winning. (which may entice high-cost players to take a lil less to come)
Boston got there after being bottom-feeders for a while, LA got there because of shaq trade and then building around kobe, but they weren’t that good for a minute. San Antonio built around Duncan, and they were horrible before then. History is the best lesson, AND A GOOD GM :!: :!: :!:
Our Gm made us into a playoff team, and we thank him, but he couldn’t put together a total championship caliber team, and we still thank him (despite his shortcomings), but he’s had 5 years to get a “4″ position and about three to get another point guard…….

what you can’t do is pay role players like they are the star of the team, when you know you need more pieces to the puzzle, to even get past the first round of the playoffs. hint hint

Comment from neal
Time March 7, 2010 at 4:26 PM

The Bucks had one of the best defenses I’ve ever seen in the pros against us. That’s above and beyond their skill level. Maybe you don’t call in chemistry, but there are important components other than individual skills.

Comment from Rick
Time March 7, 2010 at 5:22 PM

Teams with one star can win a lot of games. Look at Cleveland, for a number of years all they really had was LeBron and 4 role palyers, and they still made it deep into the playoffs.

I agree with both Getabig and Tom, you’ve got to have at least one legit star to win in this league, but you also need role players (role players = team chemistry).

If you look at the Wizards first games after the all-star break, they had a legit star in Blatche. And they were winning or putting up a tough fight. In the last few games, teams have started to really focus on him defensively and now the Wizards need some role players to step up.

Blatche is a capable and willing passer, but he needs other players to be in the right spots at the right times and knock down open jumpers. Even when Jamison was here scoring 20 pts a game, he rarely looked to setup his teammates. If he was double teamed, he’d usually still jack up a shot. Blatche has never really had a role model in this regard and the other players are not used to playing with a big in the post who can find them for easy shots. If Howard or Arenas were on the court, it would not be so easy for teams to double Blatche.

But why can’t Flip show Mike Miller and Nick Young how to get easy shots when teams double in the post. Why can’t Foye and Boykins make the extra pass?

This is a team that that will struggle BOTH because they are short on talent AND most of the players do not know and accept their roles.

Comment from tyrone2000
Time March 7, 2010 at 5:54 PM

Blatche is a very good shooter, passer, and rebounds well…notice what happens when the shot is not falling…he could be a role player…i hope the Wizards do not believe that he is their star player, maybe their best player now on the floor…M Miller seems to be a set shooter and N Young is where Blatche was, lost in the game with NBA talent…

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 7, 2010 at 6:32 PM

@Rick, Getabig and TomM both can’t be correct, that’s what keeps them going….and if they are both correct, one of them is going to add a lil more “spice” to the answer…lol….made for PTI :!: :!:

@wiz_fusion, you can only grow through the draft, getting proven players or using a home-grown product….and a home grown product must be surrounded by others. what are our other options?

btw-both AB and NY have flourished when given significant minutes, and now Javale…..properly utilizing resources is the question.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 7, 2010 at 6:43 PM

I am a *big fan* of Gotabig — and that’s no joke. I certainly don’t mind when he’s right, and in fact I *want* him to be right about many things (esp. Andray).

I also don’t mind when Gotabig is wrong. For one thing *all of us* are wrong much of the time. That’s what it means to be a fallible human being thinking things through to the best of your ability. For another thing, Gotabig represents something we all value and hope to share: a *strong* level of support for the team.

Is he sometimes off the hook? Sure — last year before the trade/draft he claimed we had the most talented roster in the NBA, better than the Lakers, the Cavs, etc. — but so what? Hey, I thought Dominic was going to be an NBA starter; doesn’t look like I’ll be right about that. Again… so what?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 7, 2010 at 6:55 PM

dcb… — I really like the Thunder. They got very lucky in having a pick when KD was available, didn’t take a genius to nab him, but they’ve also drafted and traded well in other cases.

Westbrook looks like he’ll be a winner, and so does Harden. They traded for Sefolosha, who is an *excellent* player. They picked Serge Ibaka who is having a very good rookie campaign off the bench. They’ve got some reasonably productive role players coming off the bench as well. In fact, the only guy who plays significant minutes for them but isn’t productive is Nenad Krstic.

On top of that, they have 12 guys signed for next year for a total of $40m. Terrific flexibility to continue to grow!

Sam Presti is an *excellent* GM.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 7, 2010 at 7:15 PM

Tom,

I didn’t see them coming up in the ranks the way they did, but they are good. Their pace allows them to make mistakes and make up for it. Etan Thomas must present a chunk of change for them to get even better in the future (i think his contract is rather large, it must be about to expire). And the way they got a back-up point guard off of Utah’s bench this year (maynor i think) was huge in their rotation. Presti does deserve *excellent* marks :!: :!: :!:

Wow, another great day on the blog prior to gametime, I hope you all had a tremendous Sunday, and hopefully a better Monday with a Wizards win tonight!

As far as our beloved Wizards, the culture needs to be changed from top to bottom. From players, uniforms, coaches, and mid to upper management. It is not that I believe the people in place are not good at what they do, I just believe in what our current GM has said. “All good things will come to an end.”

So I am looking forward to what will be the shape of this team this summer when ownership is in place, and what structure we have with other positions, from player personel, coaches, medical staff, etc. One thing that never gets old, thats Dave and Glenn on the blog cast and radio, and Phil and Buck on TV :!:

Beasley is going to be fine with whatever team he’s going to be on in his 5th year. I see similar maturation issues from him and Josh Smith and it took Josh that long to figure things out. Beasley can score but can’t play D, while J-Smooth can play D but can’t shoot. Go figure.

Sometimes, winning more frequently will get more out of guys that are labeled as “overrated”.

- – -

It’ll be a very tough game tonight for the Wiz. Last game – well – the team was all over the place so I hope to see a bit more cohesion in about 30 minutes. Obviously, a strong effort is needed by ALL player (hey, I’m looking at you Mike Miller!) to make this competitive.

March is an ugly month where the Wiz will be away for like 80% of the remaining games. And the 5 home games are against really tough opponents. This is also a good time to see which guys have already “checked out” for the season and are thinking of the Bahamas (I think this quote came from Tap last year).

We’re not saying he’s a savior, we just want to see how things flow with a pass-first guard. I think a true point guard will instruct players also. If what’s been in place isn’t working, why not try something new?

nick’s problem is that he misses a shot and if the team gets the offensive rebound, like they did a couple minutes ago, nick just stands at the three point line with his hands up thinking he deserves another shot.

i think we’ve all seen nick do too much of this in the past. he’s got to move.

7 minutes to go and we’re up by 11 and Flop puts that waste of time Miller into the game and Miller’s man absolutely kills us while Miller either throws the ball away or does one of his “hustle…. opps I pushed the ball out of bounds” plays. Flop lost the game by playing Miller. Miller lost the game because he is HORRIBLE. That was a disgusting loss, the responsibility for which rests entirely on Flop and Miller. Every other Wizard played GREAT. Those two were horrendous!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:02 AM

someone asked for a defense of the coach:

Maybe Singleton’s ankle was the reason he didn’t get a lot of second half minutes?

Singleton for Miller also would have meant only one ball handler (foye) in the game. Not going to work. Nor can Singleton check Ray Allen.

Thornton and Blatche look to have worn down in Q4. Not such a surprise in either case. Esp. Thornton’s knees seem to bother him when the minutes go up. Neither guy got much done in the 4th.

If you are going to blame the coach for *losing* the lead, then you have to credit the coach for *getting* the lead in the first place. No one doing that.

Nick Young? You want him in there when the minutes are critical? He has shown that he can be productive in that kind of situation? Go back over Nick’s 3 years and find me 2 games in total where a) he got healthy minutes, 2) he was productive, and 3) WE WON THE GAME. Go ahead. I dare you. I’m not sure there’s even 1, let alone 2.

Ok… that’s my defense of the coach. Guys, we don’t have the horses to win these kinds of games. We don’t have enough good players. It’s that simple.

As to picking on Miller, give me a break. Dray had 9 rebounds, 4 turnovers, and 5 fouls. Mike had 8 rebounds, 1 turnover, and 1 foul. You’re mad because he couldn’t check Ray Allen when he got hot? You know a lot of guys who *can* do that?

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:03 AM

There are numerous options, compare to what we keep playing with, NY Can at the least play D, sub in and out…..not leave him in for both sides of the court.

Comment from dcbutler357
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:06 AM

There is no excuse for having Miller consistently do this, i would doubt NY, if he were in the game and made mistakes at the end, but you can’t say what he can’t do if he’s not in the game to prove it…..we have 20 more games of this mess to watch….uggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

i’m going to go watch OKC, this totally sucks!!!!!!!!!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:07 AM

You are going to win games on the road against the good teams of the league by playing Nick Young. Right you are.

Tough game to lose; no doubt about that. When it came to points in the 4th, they had Ray Allen and we had Randy Foye. We’ll lose a lot of those games.

Comment from tyrone2000
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:08 AM

I hope Foye’s confidence does not completely disappear after that 4th qt. Did anyone notice how far out the Celtics had the Wizards try to set up their offense?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:10 AM

Exactly what did Mike Miller do, dcb, that you want to blame this loss on him? Did he go 3-14? Turn the ball over? Commit fouls to lose possessions? What did he do?

He missed 3 pointers, yes. He’s the best 3 point shooter in the league, but he does miss them as well as make them. You want Nick Young shooting? What’s his FG% ?

Comment from tyrone2000
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:10 AM

Seriously do you know when was the last time he was given time on the floor and during the 4th qt?

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:11 AM

@Tom-did you watch the game tonight? Are you saying that Miller was productive? And are you suggesting that Singelton could not stay with Allen, really? And you also would not blame the coach for the 4th qtr, really? Then please tell me what you saw tonight to sway my opinion please?

Foye and Miller were horrible in the 4th qtr, as for not having a person to handle the ball, we did not have it in the 4th~

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:12 AM

We fought hard tonight. I think we should be content with that. We’re not a very good team right now — not even a team put together intentionally. If we play with intensity and are entertaining, I’m afraid that’ll have to be sufficient.

Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:16 AM

I blame the coach for not playing Singleton in the 4th! I blame Coach for leaving Miller in the game on Allen, and watching Allen light him up! I blame Coach for Foye, jacking jumpers in the 4th and having zero composure to close the game, and coach leaving him in. I do not blame the Coach for 0-7 from the 3pt line (Foye and Miller) I blame coach for game management and rotations, like Miller playing 41 minutes tonight!! And playing Singleton (22 which he was playing well) and putting Ross in the game for 11 min, and Young for 3~ Yes I blame Coach!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:18 AM

I’m just defending the coach, jm. You (or someone) asked for somebody to do that, so I’m doing it.

Foye is not good enough to start. Mike Miller is too old to play 35 minutes a night. Andre Thornton wore down. Singleton *certainly* can’t check Ray Allen, esp. not with a bum ankle. And when you look down the bench, you see 5′5″ Earl Boykins, washed up Shawn Livingston, marginal player Q. Ross, ancient Fab Oberto, bust Nick Young, and that’s it. Hell, we could have used Crittenton tonight!

Comment from ChenierFan
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:20 AM

A few random thoughts…

1)I tend to agree with Tom here. The Wiz just don’t have the point guard play to win these types of games. By these types of games I mean the type of games where the refs let the popular home team manhandle the visitor without any whistles. What Garnett got away with on Andray was ridiculous.

2) If Miller holds onto that loose ball, I think the Wiz take this game.

3) Randy was the hero gainst the Nets, but the goat tonight. All he had to do is hit a couple of shots where he was open. But he is not cut out to lead the team against heavy pressure, but he is all we got. A couple of high screens would have helped him out.

4) I hope David Stern enjoyed this game. I kept thinking what a shame that Agent Scapegoat wasn’t in there. I’ll say it again, the length of his suspension is absurd. It is ruining his career and damaging a franchise over a politically correct practical joke.

5) Javelle, Andray and Al outplayed the Celts frontline. That is saying something.

6) Although he didn’t make the shot, I’m glad to see Andray willing to take the big shot at the end.

7) If I am Flip I consider offense/defense switch between Mike and Quintin

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time March 8, 2010 at 12:21 AM

Why would the Wizards give a single second of playing time to Mike Miller? He is way over-rated. He can’t play a lick of defense; his judgement is terrible; he can’t make a decent pass; he doesn’t do what he can do…shoot the 3… AND he will not be a Wizard next year. There is no reasonable explanation for Mike Miller getting any playing time. He was 3/4 in 41 minutes and stunk the place out otherwise. ENOUGH is ENOUGH with this guy. If Flop can’t see that Miller is cooked, then Flop shouldn’t be the head coach. He has guys on the bench who can play if given a chance…let them play.

I can hack losing if we lose with players who are going to learn something by the loss. Losing with veterans who will not be with the team next year is absolutely STUPID and grounds for dismissal. If Miller had ZERO minutes this game, we would probably have won going away.

For the head coach to place any blame on anyone except himself for playing Miller, is a terrible injustice. Every player played great except Miller. In this game one coach coached great, and it wasn’t Saunders. What a disappointment that man has been. Good coaches play the players that can close out games when they are ahead. Good coaches recognized and acknowledge their mistakes. Poor coaches play veterans who they HOPE will do the right thing and then throw the other players under the bus when the strategy is unsuccessful.

Would a victory tonight over the Celtics have vaulted the Wizards into contention…forget about it. The Wizards hopes of any playoff role ended weeks ago. Would a victory over the Celtics have gone a long way toward giving the young guys confidence that they can compete with the elite teams…you bet.

If Saunders plays Miller, Earl or Oberto a single second the rest of the season, he should be fired on the spot. Those guys should be released and allowed to enjoy an early vacation with their families. We don’t need any of them; we don’t want to see any of them; we are better off as a team without all of them…and if that doesn’t happen, we are better off without Saunders and Ernie.

@Tom-just venting tonight, really I am. This was a game we should have won. And yes to your credit, I did ask anybody to defend the Coach. And you stepped up, not sure how, but you did.

jm — I know you’re venting. Can’t blame you; but I also can’t blame the coach if we just don’t have the players. We made trades to *get rid of* guys and their salaries, not to acquire guys.

Perfect game tonight. Played well enough to see our young guys show promise against the wiley vets but still come away with the L for the draft pick. (BTW, I think we need Turner way more than Wall but we’ll save that for then).

Blatche looked good against his idol tonight. He still did some dumb stuff like settle for a bunch of jumpers when it was clear that KG couldnt stay with him off the dribble but Gil does dumb stuff like that all the time too. I wish our coaches would tell them to stop doing that when they clearly have mismatches. Howerver, he’s basically forced out of the post now due to double teams. Wait until next year when he’s older, in better shape, more ready for the role, and we have Gil & maybe some other talent around him to where he cant be doubled and he can get some easier looks. He will be a monster

Gotabig — 1) all the coaches can’t be bad, man. If you’re going to make up names for Flip Saunders after making up names for Tapscott after not liking Jordan… well I don’t know. I’m sure you know the game of basketball, but I’m going to speculate that Eddie and Flip may know it even better than you (we’ll leave Tapscott out, although he has some accomplishments on his bball resume too).

2) everybody but miller played well? you’re not telling me randy played well tonight? If he goes 5-14 (40%) we win the game.

I think we could all rant a little less about the Wizards. We aren’t a very good team, and why should we be?

Lets win the next one!!

My final word also…promise.

I feel badly for the young Wizards players (Blatche, Thornton, McGee and Foye) who played well enough to win this game, and they woud have won except for the very poor coaching (player selection). It’s a shame that Flop continues to play a guy like Miller who has demonstrated that his only positive is running at full speed to the bench when a timeout is called. This is the kind of behavior that would really raise the antennae of HR folks (much ado about nothing). Come one…stop giving this guy any minutes…he’s DONE.

@ Tom M. – When the coaches are bad, I’ll tell them so. Yes, all of the coaches CAN be bad at certain times. Part of the fun of blogging is banging on them when they are bad…and Saunders was bad tonight.

Randy played a good floor game. There were times when he made poor point guard decisions, but he’s not a point guard. Our best point guard (livngston) didn’t get a second (Flop decision).

The game was lost by Saunders. His decision to play Miller almost 41 minutes was a disaster. Anyone who watched the entire game had to be screaming at Flip.

Flip didn’t sign on to build a team, he signed on to coach a so-called ready for the next level team to play for a championship, soooooooooooo unless we go 23-0, he should ask to resign, and spare us all, the heartbreak.

As far as the players go, besides those that have contracts beyond the season, we should sign singleton, I can’t think of anyone else. Invite Livingston to training camp if he doesn’t get a fair shot, since his contract is up tomorrow. It’s sad that he didn’t get any time, it’s not like he’s disrupting “CHEMISTRY” (of all words…lol…). Oh yeah, Foye, at an avg price(and as a 2 guard more-so than point).

If Flip is back next season, please trade NY for ANYONE, so he can get a fair shot at a career. Other than that, this season is over, time to go fishing (in the Kenny “the jet” Smith voice)

The big difference I saw was movement w/o the ball. The Celtics were always in motion. The Wiz spent too much time standing around waiting to see what Foye was going to do. And too often Foye was just standing in one place trying to figure out what to do.

However, it was an encouraging game. Thornton is a keeper.

I can’t believe the BS that Saunders came out with after the game. The Celtics didn’t win the game because Blatche told KG to get out of his face. Blatche didn’t inspire KG to some sort of game-ending greatness. KG was ZERO for 7. Blatche played him great.

The game was lost because Saunders allowed the slooooow-footed Miller to play and Ray Allen just lit-him-up. Miller should be very hungry around noon today because Ray Allen ate his lunch during the 4th quarter last night.

This is a young team. There a several players who have demonstrated that they can play successfully at this level. Any thought that the Wizards would play more than 84 games this year have long ago gone out the window, so how about playing the young guys and encourging them? Why would someone who is supposed to be a good NBA coach keep throwing his players under the bus after every loss? Saunders always finds players to blame, but his coaching: lack of offense; terrible matchups; and, non-inspiring leadership is directly responsible for at least a dozen of the losses.

Hey Flip – it’s time to check YOUR EGO at the door too. I’ve had enough of your yapping and placing blame on others besides yourself.

Funny thing is – if the Wiz won last night’s game, you probably would say that Blatche did good to get into the head of KG.

Question is – did the team on the floor lose composure or did the head coach? I’m inclined to think more of the latter now.

- – -

“We choked,” he [Saunders] said. “Six minutes to go, we’re up 13. We start talking at Garnett, we start talking trash and everything else, we got Garnett juiced up and we just pissed on our leg the last six minutes. Instead of letting a sleeping dog lie, we juiced up their energy.”

“Randy had bad decisions, ‘Dray had terrible decisions. ‘Dray’s woofing the whole time at Kevin Garnett. You can’t do those things. He had 23 points with six minutes to go [but] he didn’t piss a drop the last six minutes.”

- – -
Andray’s comments

“I was defending myself as player,” said Blatche. “I’m a man just like he is. A man is talking to me this close to my face, I’m going to say something back. He has to respect me just like I respect him.”

“I could feel his [Garnett's] lips touching my cheek,” he [Blatche] added, emphatically. “I wasn’t bragging, I was just saying back up.”

Okay back to my original story, pertaining to why it’s good that we have a lot of games this month. and what we don’t have free time to blog about…

then there’s sad wizard fan that has returned to Millie Mil

And there’s Neal, that’s just as inquisitive as day 1

and there’s jeffmalone that’s still trying to understand why Flip/Tap is a good coach, or coaching at all for that matter

Then there’s gray 16 that has a statement that has you waiting for Getabig to jump all over it

Then there’s getabig that jumps all over everyone, no one is immune

Then there’s gltdk (or close to it) that is still heartbroken over the whole gun/trade issue…po thang

Then there’s Tom M, that comes out 10 minutes after the final boxscore and tells us why the world is round, and if it weren’t there would be no basketball..LOL…

and there’s wiz-fusion, that asks tom m to proofread the books that he finds about b-ball.

Then there’s aznzero, is he still fasting?

and wiz4l, that has the future blogger that he’s watching during the games (i think it’s wiz4l)

And we have Phemy that blogs all the way from Germany, and takes no-doze to stay up in the wee hours of the morning to watch the games (now thats a wiz fan for sure :!: :!: :!:

And there’s the crew that comes in every so often and say they were the first bloggers on the face of the earth and initiated this blog

AND the rest of the blog family (chenierfan, stevenson, etc etc etc)

And once all of the bloggers warm up their keyboards…..It’s Glen, DJ, Sportswiz, Noodles and the rest of the Family to get down to business(actually fun, but we won’t tell anyone)

back to flip’s comments

i don’t know why he has to play the good cop/bad cop routine after every game. if he’s going to be a hard-a_ _ to blatche, young, mcgee, and others, just be one. i don’t like the fact that he tries to nurture them one day and then rip them apart the next. we all know he’s bias for the vets (i.e., boykins and miller) and thus he doesn’t say one bad thing about them. if there is a good time to see how far the younger players on the team have come along, it is now – during another throwaway season.

i also don’t like the fact that flip really wanted to put the blame on specific guys but he used the word “we” to start. but, after his own emotions caught up, he couldn’t help but call out blatche. it was a very dirty and a low blow and i think andray answered the best he could without doing the “gilbert throwing the coach under the bus” deal.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time March 8, 2010 at 1:09 PM

Blatche has said the correct things in every interview since the vets were traded. He accepted responsibility for his shortcomings and said that he was going to work on correcting them. He NEVER blamed anyone else.

Saunders NEVER does anything except blame anyone and everyone else for the stupid coaching decisions he makes.

This is a TEAM game and the coaching staff is part of that team. The sooner Saunders comes to realize that the fans really don’t give a rat’s butt who the coach is as long as he can do the job, the better off the team will be. There is not one single fan who goes to a Wizards basketball game to watch Flip Saunders coach. However, I think that Saunders believe that he sells the tickets.

Basketball, everbody talks trash, it is part of the game. KG knew that the Wizards front line out-played the Celtics and he was doing all he could o fire himself up and the team, period! Watching Duncan and Jamison

I think Blatche has been a certified beast and will continue to do so but both of these guys are doing something tonight that Ive been saying every game that Blatche needs to do. We all know Blatche needs to get stronger & bring the energy every game but thats not a big deal to me. I think he will figure all that out in the offseason and will come back with a great body and ready to bring in for 82 games.

My only problem with him now is his post game or lack there of. He’s very good in the post and in like the first 3 games after the trade he stayed down there. Then he started getting doubled and basically has went straight to the outside faceup game. Its still ok because he’s one of the few bigs who is good enough to play well out there but I want to see him back on the block more.

Some have said to me that he doesnt want to be down there now because he gets doubled and thats true but my argument is, “whats wrong with that”? Im watching Duncan and they are doubling him every play and guess what? He’s kicking it out for wide open 3’s. Thats what Blatche should be doing. Whenever he does get doubled, we do get wide open 3’s or cuts to the basket. Thats how he was getting all those assist but now he’s not really doing it anymore. Flip should tell him to get back down there and its ok to be doubled as long as we are still producing as a team offense.

The 2nd part that I say every game that he should do in the post is go fast. He doesnt always have to wait for the double team. Im watching AJ and he knows the double is coming so as soon as he gets it, he is going fast before the double can get there. Blatche has the type of size, power, quickness, and moves to pull that off. Its like Blatche is good and is dominating but he dont even realize how much he could still dominate. I mean he could use the faceup, take guys off the dribble, pull the J, while still being in the post, drawing doubles, kicking out to open shooters, or going quick with it for the score. I think he would also draw alot more fouls that way. Spin as soon as you catch it and so on.

Basically he should play just like he is now while also incorporating some of Duncan’s drawing the double & kicking and then the other half of the time catching them off guard by going fast before the double comes like AJ does. Alot of players also get the ball in the post, the double comes, they kick it out to the closest guard who immediatly throws it right back, and then the post player is supposed to do a quick move before the double can come again. Thats all stuff we should still be doing instead of Blatche shooting all jumpers or whatever. He’s so good that he’s still playing well like this but imagine him putting it all together.

Flop’s post-game performance last night has put him squarely on top if my hit list and he’ll remain there until he issues an apology to ‘Dray that is at least as public as his stupid rant.

Blatche has been a real trooper in facing the media since the trade of the “old guys”. He never ducks a question and he always gives a polite, but honest answer. He has streadfastly stated that Saunders has been great for him and has helped him to develop as a player. So, how does Flop respond…”under the bus young man.”

I know that Flop never expected so many people to respond to his attack on Blatche with such a vehement defense of Blatche and a criticism of himself, but he deserves it.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time March 8, 2010 at 9:47 PM

@dlts20 – I agree with you regarding Duncan’s ability to passout of the double-team and AJ ability to shoot before the double-team materializes. It would be nice if the Wizards offense knew what to do whenever Blatch was double-teamed, but they just stand around. A little offensive coaching would help.

Very perceptive IMO dlts20. I agree.

I have very mixed feelings about Saunders. His public dissing of his players stinks. On the other hand, he’s got us playing better D. And it now looks like he wasn’t playing the younger guys earlier on purpose. He and EG probably knew the veterans were going and just wanted them to pad their stats before trade week.

Leonsis’s success with the caps started with “getting rid of the overpaid veterans”. Well, Miller, Foye and Howard will be FA’s so they won’t be Wizards unless at a much reduced salary. That leaves……..Arenas.

Going into the season, Ernie (and Flip) were pretty sure that our crew of veterans were going to take us deep into the playoffs. Most of us thought that was pretty likely — at least 2d round.

Management was confident enough of this level of success to push salaries into luxury tax territory, something the Wizards have never done. That fact alone tells you a lot.

We weren’t thinking of building for the future; we were thinking of results *now* from what we’d already built.

Because that’s where we were going, gil/flip didn’t want to count on young players, relatively raw players. And we sure didn’t think we needed to *add* any young players.

So now we only have 3 young players — AB and JM are getting heavy minutes. Nick can’t get anything going for himself. Whomever you want to blame for that.

IMO, we might as well play Nick 30 minutes a night from now on. Why not? Because we’ll lose more games? How do losses matter right now, if you think of it? I don’t believe in tanking, that’s for sure, but in the end we’d be a lot better off picking 4th than 8th in June, so even if we miss out on some wins because of the kid, …so what?

Time to start a “free Nick Young” movement?
