Game Day Grizzlies
6:22 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in….Put five guys on the floor and play hard. That’s what the Wizards have been doing and will have to continue to do in the wake of the loss of Josh Howard to a torn ACL in his left knee. Yes it is discouraging. Howard approached the trade to the Wizards as a new start and it showed in how he played. There were no signs of the ankle problems that slowed Howard in Dallas. Still as so many callers said in a our one hour radio post-game show on Monday—they love watching a team that fights and competes the way the Wizards have been doing of late. So while we are disappointed in Howard’s loss, there is still reason to be excited to see how this team develops. From Andray Blatche’s new role to new comers like Al Thornton there are plenty of story lines that we will watch unfold. On to play a good young Memphis Grizzlies team tonight. The Grizzlies lost 99-98 to the Lakers last night as Kobe Bryant returned from an ankle injury and ended up hitting the game-winning three-point shot…Grizzlies are athletic and have a lot of talent but are in a difficult patch with nine losses on their last twelve games.BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 7:00 PM —with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG
6:10 PM….Dave and Glenn checking in…….Look for Al Thornton to take Josh Howard’s spot in the lineup….Flip Saunders says the team’s calling card is to be aggressive.
6:29 PM…..starters are in…..Randy Goye, Mike Miller, Al Thornton, Andray Blatche, JaVale McGee….Mike Conley, OJ Mayo, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol

lakers, or should i say kobe downed the grizz last night with a heartbreaking game winning shot.
hope the wiz take advantage of this and get off to a good start tonight. it’s going to be a tough game especially without josh howard, but this team beat denver on a back to back, so i have confidence in them to win tonight.
just keep the hard work up and success will follow.

This is a weird game for a number or reasons. The Grizz have been up & down lately, its the 2nd night of a back to back, and the lost at the end which could deflate them. On the flip side I think losing Howard’s speed, ball handling, and slashing ability really hurts us, the Grizz fans seem to think Mayo will start playing alot more aggressive now after missing those 2fts, and they have some of the hardest matchups in the leauge for us.
The whole starting lineup may be hard for us to matchup with. Despite what I said about OJ, I think they will go inside early & often. I think they look Gasol’s size on McGee and they probably feel that Z-Bo could get Blatche in quick foul trouble or make him lose some steam on O with his style and by being a lefty which is always much harder to guard.
If I know Flip like I think I do then he is going to go to Blatche early & often. The #1 thing I love about Flip is that he’s doing what Ive been asking for our coaches & players to do for years. He goes after the mismatch every single game. If you watch, he thinks of one matchup he likes before every game and starts with it. Thats why against Toronto he went to Howard on every play with Turk guarding him and got 2 quick fouls on him. I think he will go to Blatche every play to wear Zack down some on the other end and hopefully he can make him get 2 fouls which will totally change there team.
I use to always get so mad that our coaches didnt recognize a mismatch or a good matchup. NY would come in and sometimes be guarded by a 6ft guy but we never isolate him or post him up. If Flip see’s that now he immediatly calls for it. The only problem is that it didnt work when we had the other guys here because AJ was a hog and would never pass out and Caron got phased out in every game because he never had the good matchup which also made him a hog when he finally did get it. I also dont like it when Flip does it every play because how do you know if this isnt the game that one of your other guys may be capable of going for 40 but you never gave them a shot because you singled one guy out for such a long period and now this other guy has cooled.
Either way, we are taking advantage of it way more with this group, even though last game I thought Flip sucked at it since Blatche had by far the best matchup and we never really went to him yet he still scored 25. There is no doubt that he wouldve scored 35 or had a bunch of assist if we wouldve went to him more befcause all there 4′s were too small. I wouldnt be shocked if both teams pick the 4 and its Blatche vs Z-Bo right from the jump with both teams havign the same exact goal about wearing out the best player and maybe getting him in foul trouble. If Blatche holds his own in this one then he has officaly arrived. Z-Bo isnt a great defender but his O could give Blatche hell and keep him in foul trouble

The tell of the tape will come down to stopping the inside game of Memphis and the very fast guards penetrating the painted areas for layups and dishoff to Gasol and three point shooters. If we can get another physical effort from Blatche,Mcgee,Foye, Miller, Thorton,Singleton and Ross then I feel we should be in it in the final minutes for the Big W. The energy level will be there because the fan base is coming back for sure so lets play smart and lower theturnovers and up the ante on the assists then we should do fine! The guy that could fill the variable uunknown is Nick Young. If this guy gets hot with his speed to the basket and crossover pull up jumper and threepoint capabilities then he could be the X_FACTOR.

The weak match up for the Wizards is Mike Miller versus Rudy Gay. Rudy is just too quick for Miller and I feel Singletary will be in there very soon because Miller will have 2 fouls almost instantly. The other option would be would be Ross or Nick Young on him to slow him down! The Rudy Gay is all-star potential and its just a matter of time for this guy could take over a game!

on another note, other than blatche, i think singleton is my new favorite player on the team. (including those injured for the season) hes not a big scorer, but he is the hardest working guy on the floor everynight. reminds my of a more developed, more confident dmac.

A win tonight could really give us some mometum for that last playoff run because starting with the Knicks, the next four games are winnable. I still have the Josh Howard Blues, but I’m hoping that’ll pass. Don’t know much about Rick Harris. Tom thought he would be a great pick up. I’m expecting the guy to be a little like Awvee Storey. (Remember him?) He was a likeable fella who played with a lot of energy and had one or two good games for the Wiz. But that was it. I thought we needed something else to replace Howard. Anyway, welcome to the Wiz, Rick Harris. This is your chance to prove you belong. Let’s get that win against the Grizzlies tonight! GO WIZARDS!!!!

Not just “a scorer” as Wiz_Fusion comments — he is a very strong rebounder. He had 17 games w/ the Rockets in ’07-8, playing 9.5 minutes a game. Rebounded at better 16 per 48 minute rate, which is fantastic. He also shot 50% and didn’t make a lot of mistakes.
Mike Harris can be an excellent contributor, and I’m sure he will be very motivated. Good work the rest of the season can get him on an NBA roster next year!

i like tom mandel am happy with the selection of mike harris. like tom said, he is a great rebounder and showed that with the rockets. not only is he a good defensive rebounder, but also a good offensive rebounder.
i’d like to see a lineup of boykins, miller, thornton, harris, and singleton in a game this season, that would truly be fun to watch. 4 forwards who hustle, great at rebounding, and understand a team game.
speaking of hustle, that’s one of mike harris’ best qualities, so if you like dom mcguire, singleton, etc. you will probably like him.

rgz — *every* team needs “another 7 ft center”, duh!
Unfortunately, guys like that with any talent aren’t actually available on demand.
Moreover, we aren’t going to spend money that takes us over the Luxury Tax limit to bring in somebody for the rest of this season. That would wind up costing us $4m in payments coming to us for being under the limit, not to mention whatever the tax itself amounted to.
Mike Harris works fine for now.

W4L — you are right that Josh Howard makes a lot of money… this year. Unfortunately, he got in the dog house, injured, traded, then injured again — all in his contract year. And he turns 30 in April.
Josh is going to cost someone — us or whoever — a lot less next year than this year. $6m would be a good number, one his agent would be happy with I think.

How can I discribe Wizards fans at the games? They r the kind of fans that if they were a girlfriend u wouldn’t want to take home to meet your mother. They won’t cheer or chant defense until 2:00 min left in the game and that always depend on how close the game is.
To me they r saying, we will watch and see how they do and if they look like they might win we will roar, for the moment lets just relax and call our friends and tell them we r at the game and we might be on tv.

Tom, how many SG/SF combos does one team need? Singleton is only 6′ 8″, and people were complaining that Jamison at 6’9″ was a small PF.
These are the SG/SF on the team:
Singleton, Howard (out), Thornton, Ross, Miller, Young.
Now they add Harris. That makes 6 active players who play either shooting guard or small forward. If you count Singleton who is undersized, that’s 7 SG/SFs.
One power forward Blatche and two Centers McGee and Oberto. That is why I said we need another 7 ft center. Someone who can really clog up the lane with a large body. Not just rebound like some jumping bean SFs.

rgz, singleton, thornton, and harris are combo forwards, as in they play the 3 and 4. thornton is the only guy i would see playing the 2 for a lot of minutes, but i don’t think that would even be a good idea.
nick young isn’t a sf by any means imo, he’s a shooting guard any way you look at it. only in desperate situations (foul troubles, injuries) will he be put at the 3.
i’d say miller, ross, and howard were the only guys who would play sg/sf.
hope mike miller doesn’t get burned by oj mayo that bad.

When AJ, CB and B-Wood were Wizards, their lack of energy made Mike Miller look like an all-star by comparison and a lot of Mike’s bone-head plays were overlooked. Now we have a high-energy group and Mike’s poor passing and terrible judgement stand out like a sore thumb. Mike does one thing very well…he can hit the open three-pointer, but he’s not quick enough to make a shot for himself when he has the ball. Mike should not get more than 12 minutes per game. His short-comings limit him and the team.
Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time February 25, 2010 at 12:40 AM
The other teams in the league have seen the tapes and are now double-teaming ‘Dray when he gets the ball in the post. For the most part, the Wiz player who passes the ball to ‘Dray in the post cuts through the lane. As he cuts through, his man drops off to double-team ‘Dray. The defensive rotation is such that the cutter is picked up by another defensive player leaving ‘Dray to try to beat the double-team by himself or throw a cross-court pass. How about getting a shooter to ‘Dray’s side of the court so that he can kick the ball to them (Slick or Miller) would be logical choices.
Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time February 25, 2010 at 12:49 AM
Couple of things about the Grizzle’s game: the most obvious is doing something about McGee’s inability to defend the low post. IMHO Javale wants to block shots and plays behind the offensive post player so that he can let the man get the ball and then block the shot. I know that Gene Banks would not advocate that type of defense from a post player. If Javale would play in front of the post, who could throw a pass over his head that anyone else could catch? Of course, fronting the post requires effort. Come on, Javale, EFFORT!
Secondly, we could have won this game. The team effort was there. The defense was very tough. The Wiz got a lot of tough breaks and many bad calls.
Last point, I know that Coach Saunders is limited in his choice of point guards, but man, if we had a good one, we could be trouble for every other team.

Just checked the box score…how can Mike Miller play 33 minutes and only get 6 shots?
The Wiz starters shot over 54% from the field; the bench just under 39%; however, Earl and Singleton were just 6/20 (30%) and that was the game.

Penetration buried us tonight, just plainly outmatched. Was that AB that kept getting beat down-court by his man? AB should not be shooting 3pointers, enough of that, we don’t need another AJ. If we get some fresh, defensive/offensive guards, we would probably have 10 more wins right now….Loving the energy, keep it moving, rotations still a lil “blurry”

Missed the game so what happened? Was it what I feared about them having alot of bad matchups for us? Was it also my other fear that Howard maybe the straw that broke the camels back and we will come up short alot without his quickness, slashing, and scoring ability, or was it just reality starting to set in? Maybe a little of all?
I guess we wont know for sure until the NY game. I think the Grizz has maybe the worst matchups in the league for us so maybe we will look better against NY but I do fear that the Howard injury doomed us for good. Again, I dont mind losing now but I dont want it to be any boring crap losses and thats what this game today seemed like from the game log

Gotabig — Mike did make a couple of bonehead passes, but overall he has always looked like a pretty good passer to me, as is evidenced by the fact that he usually gets quite a high number of assists for his position. Ditto rebounds, to your point of “does only one thing well” — that’s not true.
What is true, however, is that he looks just a little bit slower than he used to look. He was never a premiere athlete, obviously, and he now is 30 and looks to be carrying about 10 more lbs than when he was at his best. I think he is having some trouble getting his own shot. I agree that we need to run plays for him.
But he is not the problem on this team, and I can’t believe you would criticize his level of effort (maybe you didn’t mean to). As you point out, we don’t have a real point guard. Earl isn’t doing the job, despite making some good plays on his own, and Randy is a combo guard. Yes, with an excellent point guard even this patched together squad would be dangerous every night.

I turned the game off w/ a 3 1/2 minutes left; we were down 15, so it looks like we staged a little comeback. Obviously, the game wasn’t as close as the score indicates.
Still, it’s good we fought — this gang of Wizards is fun to watch, and I sure hope we keep James Singleton! At the same time, surely we must temper our expectations.
As Gotabig points out, Blatche is being doubled; that ought to lead to open shots for Mike Miller and Nick as Gotabig points out. Hope they work on that in practice. Both those guys will *make* a high % of open shots.

Javale has to be the biggest disapointment on this team.. for as much promise he shows, he shows even more flaws. he main two problems are his toughness and his bball iq. you cant just make a soft player into a tough player, and as coach, flip must be fraustrated. i have never seen a 7 footer on the ground so often in my life. any push or shove and javale is out of the picture. but u have to leave him in sometimes just to change shots against teams who have gaurds that can get to the rim. i feel for u flip.
we are in need of a pg like nothing else!! randy is not a pg. he is seen as a combo guard why? because he can dribble and is under 6’6? he is not a combo guard, he is a shooting guard. he was great at the 2 with gil running the point. and now he looks lost and unefficient.
we really need to draft a pg this summer. regardless if we can get john wall or not. we need to take the best available pg with our first pick and the best avaiable center with the second.

and to make my last comment on the would be PFs.
No matter what anyone says, all these guys are shorter and leaner than Jamison who everyone was saying was an undersized PF.
They are all Small Forwards who can jump.
As to whether Nick Young can play SF or not, I am not a coach but he has certainly played in the SF spot for the Wizards, I believe last year. Just as Caron Butler played SG. Of course Caron is heavier than Nick, so was less liable to be manhandled by opposing players. But still was undersized SF compared to other teams. Instead of hiring a Harris, why not Paul Davis? He may not be as good as Marc Gasol for example (or even Hadadi) but at least has the size and can jump.
