Game Day Knicks
7:49 AM EST….Dave Johnson checking in and so fired up….I am ready to play at Noon. Actually I up for my son’s big ten-year old basketball game. But how about last night? The Wizards win for the first time in franchise history without having a starter score in double figures. And “fourth quarter” Earl Boykins is the hero with a jumper off a high Antawn Jamison screen from 16-feet with four-tenths of a second left. Oddly enough Boykins only had one assist but the way he was able to probe and prod through Nets defense opened up better scoring opportunities….On to tonight……BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 8:00 PM —with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG
7:17 PM…Dave and Glenn checking in……a good night to stay inside and BLOG.
7:58 PM…starters are in….Foye, Miller, Butler, Jamison, Haywood,…..Knicks will have Duhon, Wilson Chandler, Gallinari, Jeffries and David Lee…

Wizfan4life – Yes, it’s snowing. It started around 9:30 and is at a study pace. I might have to watch the game on TV tonight if the snow keeps up. No need to go to the game if the weather is bad.
Anyway, glad to get a win but it should have been by a bigger margin. But a win is a win so I’ll take it. We need to win tonight as well.

With 5 inches of snow expected in DC, tonight’s a good time to see the Wiz at the Verizon Center?
Why? Because chances are really good not a lot of people will show up. And this means that all the upper level ticket holders will be moved down to the lower bowl for free. I’ve seen it happen a lot lately and it’ll happen again tonight – unless Knicks fans blitz the place.
So, buy a cheaper upper level ticket and sit in the lower level. Isn’t life grand?

A few random thoughts…
- I decided to break with tradition and not travel to the Meadowlands to watch my beloved Wiz in person last night. Not worth blowing $80 on them this year. I can’t be sure if they are playing for the lottery or not anymore
- The Nets announcers (I live in NJ) were remarking how (Duke of) Earl is , given his small size, one of of the most amazing athletes in all of professional sports – they’re right. The guy does have the temperment and skills to make big shots.
- I think Flip is doing a good job of turning Andray into a real power forward. It is going to take a long time to unlearn all the bad habits from years past, but it seems Andray is starting to play more physical. Maybe even developing a bit of an attitude.
- I wouldn’t mind sending Brendan, Caron and Antawn to NJ for Lopez & Douglass-Roberts. That would be a fresh start.
- The Nets chose poorly when they picked Williams in the first round. The guy has athleticism, but lacks decent skills. He can barely dribble with his left hand.
- The punishment against Agent Scapegoat was way out of line. I will repeat, that if the the Wiz were 30-15 rather than 15-30, Stern handles this much differently.
- Is it time to send out an APB on our long-lost blogger, Tom Mandel?

I guess Tom is disillusioned. Like me.
IMO the next step in the rebuilding process is the trade of a couple of our veterans before 2/18. In order of probability: Jamison, Miller (sign & trade), Haywood (sign & trade), Butler.
I don’t expect Grunfeld back next year. He made some good trades but gambled big on the big 3 and lost. And Saunders doesn’t look like a good coach to develop young players – I’ve sure changed my opinion on him. And, of course, we are no longer a “this is our year” team.
After Arenas’s sentencing the Wiz will talk to the league about trying to void his contract or just buying him out. On the other hand, if the new owner knows Grunfeld won’t be back, maybe he’ll let Arenas come back instead. Certainly, both Arenas and Grunfeld don’t want to be on the same team.
Actually, I thought Arenas was making more of an effort to fit into a team approach than either of the other big three.
It’s just a shame that elite athletes don’t get used to disciplining their personal life the way the rest of us have to.

let’s see if flip decides to give the bench some minutes again tonight. i’d even like to see dmac and mcgee get some play tonight. we are always complaining about energy, but those are the two that never play, and those are the two that show the most energy on the team most of the time.

Will the REAL Mike Miller please stand up? I was hoping Mike can provide 10-15 points a game from Game 1 but he is too unselfish and too hurt. It makes little sense in a contract year to be unselfish, so who knows what’s up. I wonder if this is too little, too late for Mike and the team. But, Mike was hitting bombs like he was playing for D’antoni. Ah, the irony.
A lot of Knick fans at Verizon Center tonight. Actually, not a bad crowd considering the weather.
For the first time in a long time, Flip didn’t scrowl for the entire first quarter. Flip worked the refs like he is known to do but he was pretty happy the Wiz got a lot of baskets early and forced the Knicks to stop popping 3s. Flip again talked to Blatche about something when Andray and Nick got subbed out for Antawn and Caron, and I read the lips of Andray saying “I know”. Then Flip slapped his butt.
I think Flip is going to ride Andray hard as long as they’re both on the same team. I like it – and I think Andray will have more consistent success.
I complained in the past about Dunkin Donuts being $2 at the stadium. Well, a block south of VC is a cupcake shop, where, 1 small cupcake is $3.25 or $36 for a dozen. I tried it tonight and it was worth it, but man, it was so expensive – more than the donuts.

1 more thing
We all know Antawn’s a pretty good rebounder, but 11 OFFENSIVE BOARDS?
I don’t care, for 1 night, about his defense. When a pro player gets 11 offensive boards, that’s like stopping your man 11 times or contesting your man’s shots 11 times and getting him to miss.
What a bounce-back from last night.

Now this is more like it! This was a much better win tonight than last night. We just need to keep it up now, and playing the Celtics on Monday night would be a really good test. It’s time to finally show people that we are among the best in the NBA.
GO WIZ!!!

Woo great to get a win. Career high for Jamison in rebounds when he is 33 is just. Wow.
Miller lights out from 3 point line lol! 7-10. 1 rebound 2 assist away from triple double.
Now we play the celtics… If the wizards can pull that off, and we get 3 games in a row, I think we are in form again. Remember that playoffs are STILL possible.

I don’t want to take anything away from a 23 rebound night, so I’ll write about team rebounding in some other post. GREAT rebounding night for AJ. Totally compensated for his horrible 38% FGA (10/26).
What’s the deal with B-Wood? Did he do something to get on Flip’s bad side? I’ve always thought that he plays MUCH better in the first half of the game than in the second half, but is there some other reason why he got so few minutes in the 3rdQ and none in the 4th.
I still want AJ, CB and B-Wood traded while the Wiz can get some serious compensation for each. Again, young legs or draft picks.

Mike Miller played his best game as a Wizard. He stopped that – drive the lane; jump up in the air; throw a bad pass move that he seemed to perect in recent games. Mike is an excellent shooter…SHOOT! He is also a team player who looks to pass, but his passing timing has been horrible…SHOOT!
If we have a combination of Mike, AJ or Slick (pick two) on the strong side of the court on offense we should be able to score some buckets…but only if AJ will consider passing the ball.

Andre”play below the rim” Miller burnt dallas for 52 tonight. He scored a good ten after they put Marion on him

ESPN is reporting that the Wizards and Rockets are still in talks about McGrady’s contract.
However, both sides are now focusing on other assets and not an Arenas for McGrady swap.
The trade proposal is:
Butler/Haywood for McGrady/?,
where ? is discussed to be Luis Scola.
- – -
Dude, if I was Grunfeld, TAKE THIS TRADE IN A HEARTBEAT! Both sides shall be happy.
a) TMac can sub in for Butler for like 35 games at SF. And then we let TMac walk or resign at a very cheap 3 year contract (no more than 7 million per).
b) Blatche or Oberto will be starting at Center for the remaining games this season. Maybe McGee gets another look.
c) Scola’s skills in the low post will be an awesome addition for the Wizards. Scola is a very good passer as well.

oh please let that above trade happen
i’m guessing blatche would start at center, but with him starting to move closer and closer to the rim, maturing more and more, and becoming much more agressive (i’ve seen more dunks from him in the past couple of weeks than the past couple of years), he could actually handle it for most games.
then scola and mcgee/oberto coming off the bench would work. scola is very unselfish, but knows how to score, so he would be a great team player to add. plus his rebounding is very good and his fg% is always good.
tmac is the wild card. he could come in and surprise a lot of people. as long as he would be willing to except he’s not the tmac of old, and settle into a role, he could fit on the wizards. and shoot, he could wind up playing great for us. just hope his fg% improves. and even if he didn’t work out, that’s a lot of money coming off the books.
definitely agree with wizfusion, this would be a great trade for the wizards to except.

How is Tmac going to sub for butler if they are on two different teams.
Man, I wish we could have a two-big lineup…i.e. Haywood/blatch or Blatch/McGee. For some reason I like AB at the four rather than five. He should be starting at the four and AJ at the three. We would be more “potent” IMO.

@dcb:
Sub as in Tmac would take over whatever Butler is doing here now, not relieving each other on the same team.
You misinterpreted my usage of ‘sub’. Maybe ‘direct replace’ is a better word choice.

I want to give kudos to the people that made this blog mobile accessible. I’m blogging now on the Blackberry. This is really sweet!
Now I can give opinions for all Wiz home and away games live instead of hours after the game.

I stayed in last night because of the weather but I certainly enjoyed watching the game on TV. I just love seeing Miller taking and making shots last night – now that’s what I’m talking about. I love Mike Miller! Jamison was the league leader in rebounds and Miller lead with 3-pointers for all of the games played yesterday. It is so good to see the 2 of Wizards among the league leaders. Haywood has been listed a few times as the lead blocker. So this game felt good all over! I am hoping for a win tomorrow.

i would not trade CB3 and Haywood for a broke down T-Mac that dose not sound like a good deal the guy has not played a whole season in like 5 years.. and Haywood has been doing a good job and his contract is up after this year it comes off the books no need to even trade him..

plus can we get any smaller? why? a more athletic small forward would do wonders for this team…

I think you guys are not thinking about the Butler/Haywood – McGrady/? trade correctly.
It is strictly for dropping the luxury tax the Wizards are looking at.
Remember, Grunfeld and Abe Pollin were ok with paying the luxury tax this year if the team gets further than the 1st round of the playoffs. Well, that vision seems to be really far away – almost unrealistic now.
So, the team has to take the least amount of hits. Since Arenas’ contract is immovable right now, the team should make cuts to salvage whatever positive is left this season – and money reduction is on the top of the list right now; along with rebuilding.

Also, any acquisition of expiring contracts is only going to happen for 35 games or less. I have no problems with letting TMac walk if he’s traded here.
Haywood can walk after being traded to Houston as well – if another team offers him more money.
Bottom line with the Rockets trade is basically Butler for Scola.

I would like to see OKC with Haywood or a dominant center. I think they would make more than some noise in the west. I guess having Etan there really doesn’t help them.

“Kobe Bryant (19 points, 8-20 FG) overcame a mediocre performance and drained a go-ahead jumper with 7 seconds left to beat the Celtics 90-89…
You know our standards are low, AJ does this on a nightly basis and we hail him as the hardest working man in the business, whereas Kobe does it and he wants to “forget” about it….LOL….

Well, I will say after last night’s game that the Wizards barely managed to win against the worst team in the NBA, but hey a win is a win! The Wizards’ starters played mediocre ball last night except for Mike Miller, who seemed to have all the hustle on the team despite being 1-5 for threes……the bench is what won the game for us last night……Andray Blatche impressed me last night! The type of hustle he showed last night is the kind everyone has been waiting for since he was drafted!! To win against New York tonight, the Wizards have to have the same explosiveness of the bench as last night….but definitely more hustle from the starters as well!
