Game Day Minnesota

SportzWiz checking in…I hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday. The Wizards actually left yesterday for Minnesota as they will look to win their third straight game tonight. While the Wizards will be playing on the road it will be a familiar arena for several Wizards from both coaches (Flip Saunders, Randy Wittman, Don Zierden and Sam Cassell) to players (Randy Foye and Mike Miller). Dave will be hopping on shortly but as always their is a listen live link to the right and tonight’s game will tip at 8pm. GO WIZARDS!

10:58 AM EST….Dave Johnson checking in–decided to sleep in—Santa Claus made too much noise on our roof and kept me up the night before. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. Wizards arrived here yesterday and then Flip Saunders hosted an amazing dinner at his house. It was just great to see everybody together laughing, wathcing basketball and football , and enjoying a terrifc meal. It is back to business today…Gilbert Arenas seems to be ok  despite the thigh bruise he suffered Wednesday. Tonight is the start of 3 games in 4 nights so fasten your seat belts.BLOGCAST—radio and  blogging together—starts at 8:00 PM —with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is  a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.

7:13 EST…Dave and Glenn here at Target Center..Earl Boykins has been feeling a little under the weather so hopefully…he will be a go tonight..

7:43 EST….Starters are in.. it will be Arenas and Foye in the back court…Foye is averaging 13.3 points per game as a starter..Haywood is in the middle with Butler and Jamison at forwards……TWOLVES will go with rookie Johnny Flyyn at point guard and he will be joined by Corey Brewer in the back court….Al Jefferson is the starting center…with Damien Willins and Kevin Love at forwards….

the T-Wolves will put up a tough match tonight…….what is the status of Mike Miller and Arenas? I saw Miller shoot around at the game vs. Philadelphia, and i heard Arenas bruised his knee in the Bucks game

GO ‘ZARDS!

Memphis really got the momentum going right now, so we have to start strong, and work hard on the boards. Can’t Z.Randolph allow to get 20+boards.

cheers

Wolves have some guys that play similarly to the guys on the Wiz, for example

Flynn -> Boykins (smaller stature guys trying to make it in the NBA)

Gomes -> Blatche (good players but very inconsistent)

Brewer -> Young (freakish athletes at 6-7)

Since GABBO has the “BIG thumbs up for ‘Dray” thing, I’m going with my “FREE MCGEE”.

P.S. – FREE MCGEE

They said they would keep Miller out until the start of the New Year but Gil seems ok. We have won 3 of 4 and I think we have a chance to win 4 of 5 and 3 in a row for the 1st time all year.

I love what DJ said about the dinner last night. You have the team feeling confident that they can make a win streak, everyone is bonding with the X-Mas dinner, alot of guys are coming back to a familiar place in Minny, Wood is the only guy in the leauge who completely shuts down big Al, and Gil is now trying to expose smaller guards like Flynn & Sessions so he should look great if he’s healthy. Rambis knows this so I wouldnt be shocked if he put Flynn on Foye and Brewer on Arenas but then Foye or NY should go off and Brewer is too big to stay with Gil. Foye is getting more comfortable so I expect him to play well against his former team tonight and be a little aggressive. I could see a vintage Gil-Larry Hughes type show with Gil & Foye. Lets try to jump on them early and send a message to everyone in the league who will be watching on NBA TV that this team is totally different then it was earlier and we will be a major threat in the East

Comment from gray16
Time December 26, 2009 at 1:08 PM

don’t know much about the grizzlies this season, but i do know they have the second worse record in the league.

hopefully the wizards make this a 3 game winning streak.

Comment from dlts20
Time December 26, 2009 at 1:29 PM

do you mean the Wolves? Why does everyone always get those 2 teams confused, lol? The Grizz game could be super tough so we have to win this game tonight

Comment from maggicman11
Time December 26, 2009 at 1:42 PM

hey, i always confuse the wolves and grizzlies. probably cuz they are the 2 animals u never wana see while camping. or maybe cuz they always have close to the same record. lol

Comment from dlts20
Time December 26, 2009 at 1:50 PM

Not this year though. The Grizz are balling at 13-15 which isnt great but its balling for them and its a great record since there in the West. Z-Bo has been beasting, they have size, and a ton of young talent. I want to see how they do against the Mavs today

Comment from Gilfanatic
Time December 26, 2009 at 4:18 PM

Okay. I’m hoping for a Wizards victory here tonight. I’m hearing too many trade rumors. I don’t like them. People are getting too down on the Wizards. Sure production of some players have dropped. But we haven’t had a healthy team in like 3 years. Last year we only won like 19 out of our 31 games last time I think. This year we’ve already won 10 games. I think Flip saved our season… and that we have a chance at getting to the post-season if we keep playing. We need a healthy team, and, we don’t need to talk about trading players right now.

Comment from dlts20
Time December 26, 2009 at 4:27 PM

I agree 100% Gilfanatic but I dont believe the rumors at all personaly. No way Grunfield gives up yet.

Comment from dlts20

DJ, any more word on Gil or Boykins? I ask because a Minnesota blogger said that Gil & Boykins are game time decisions. Is that just putting them on the injury report or could the really miss the game? Again, IDK if I want Gil to play anyways if he’s going to be affected physicaly or mentaly by it because when he’s like that then he hurts us more then helps. Hopefully he’s good to go because I dont think Minny has anyone to defend him.

They also said that Gomes will be back

I don’t like the flow of the game. The T-wolves aren’t exactly shooting that well and we’re carrying their flow with us– and not shooting well on the other end. We need to take advantage of the poor shooting and put this game out of reach.

Wix got out hustled tonight. They settled for jumpers instead of starting the second half penetrating.

Antawn always seems to hit his first 3 pointer (when he is fresh) then miss the rest. His defense is non-existent anymore. Actually, the whole team was soft on defense tonight. Andray needs to get some blocked shots.

This was a bad loss. If the Wiz want to reach the playoffs, they need to win these games.

On the plus side.. I hope they keep Randy as the starter the rest of the year. He needs to be more assertive. He’s not there yet. It’s hard not to defer to (Wyett Earp) Gil.

Randy is probably the second best 3-point shooter on the team after MIke.

What was Fabricio doint tonight.

We had 12 assists on 32 baskets. CB had 1, B-Wood had 1 and ONCE AGAIN AJ had ZERO, but then so did Randy. gIl had 9, but he also took 28 shots…some teamwork!!!!!!!!!!! This is not a team, this is a “me”, “me”, “me” group of basketball players.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 27, 2009 at 12:08 AM

There is probably no team in the NBA against which a player has had a “career Game” more often than against the Wizards, and that career game has come, more often than not, at whatever position AJ is defending. AJ and gIl are probably the two worst defenders on the Wiz. They should NEVER be in the game at the same time. The other players end up trying to cover for two weak defensive sisters at the same time. It is simply one more argument for having AJ come off the bench.

AJ’s two positive contributions to the team are his consistent scoring and his rebounding. Shooting 6/14 from the field while getting 6 rebounds in 39:36 just indicates that there is something wrong. Why can’t our coaches see that AJ can not extend his right arm above his shoulder like he has to in order to be effective.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 27, 2009 at 12:09 AM

Anyone who thinks that B-Wood is a productive center must be comparing him to himself from previous years. He is blocking shots and getting rebounds this year because he won’t leave the basket area to play real defense. Meanwhile whoever he is guarding scores at will. B-Wood has not had a single decent second-half of any game this year. That is because he has limited energy. He should not be in the game after the first half ends. Coach, check his stats for first half vs. second half.

I’m tired of watching Earl dribble, dribble, dribble looking for an open man because he can’t see beyond the man who is guarding him. He gets killed when he is on “D” whenever they post him (of course), and the other teams are now remembering how to make him a negative…post him up.

It’s sad to see Slick get limited minutes and McGee get ZERO (again) on a team that is in last place in its division. In 22:53 we got the ball to Blatche only 6 times when he was in a position to score and he shot 4/6 while getting 8 rebounds. It really is time to see AJ come off the bench and AB start; its time to see McGee get some really serious minutes replacing B-Wood; its time to see Slick get minutes at the 2 and Randy move to the 1 to give gIl both time at the 2 and some bench minutes.

The total bench minutes represented fewer than 23% of the total minutes. gIl got 42:22 and CB and AJ got 39:35 and 39:36 respectively. That is WAY too many minutes for the starters. Using Earl early in the game puts us in a hole so that’s not the answer.

How about:
Foye -1; gIl; Earl
gIl -2; Slick; DS
CB – 3; Dom
AB – 4; AJ
BH -5; JM; AB; FO

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense

BTW, the T’Wolves bench got 34% of the total minutes compared to fewer than 23% for the Wizards bench. Yes, the T’Wolves did seem fresher in the 4th quarter.

Comment from ChenierFan

The best teams in the league have the biggest front lines (Lakers, Cav & Celtics) The Wiz need to make a commitment to doing the same. Andray is now a capable NBA player who plays better when he starts. Antawn, either because of injury or age (or both) is playing small on both offense & particularly defense.

I join GABBO in calling for a lineup change and also:
-Play McGee as a back-up to Brendan, not Andray.
- Have Randy and Gil share ball-handling duties (to cut down on turnovers)
- Keep Antawn rested for the 4th qtr so he can actually make shots and move his feet on defense.

We have the team to win a lot of games – it is just that the line-ups and combos are not right.

ChenierFan i agree.. with the games i’ve seen and the quality effort we’ve put forth in some of our wins (at milwaukee, at golden state, at miami), this team is more than capable of winning (and we don’t even have mike miller right now).

I’m backing off my comment I made after our loss to the Clippers saying that would mark the end of an otherwise promising season. I’m looking at our record.. believe it or not guys, we’re only ONE game out of the 8th playoff spot. Obviously we all want us to be at number one, and at the very least the 4 or 5 where we’ve been 3 of the last 4 years. But comparing this season to last, obviously we have our Big 3 healthy and playing again, even though we’re still beset by injuries (Crittenton, James, Miller). Gilbert’s starting to get his groove back together. Haywood’s back patrolling the paint. We have the pieces, and they’re coming together.. now we just have to wait on the glue in Mike Miller.

As far as the standings go, after 28 games last year we were 5-23. this year, we’re 10-18 and in my opinion, playing a WHOLE lot better than last year. even though we’re still losing a lot of close games, the fact we at least have our Big 4 (“Big 3″ + b-wood) healthy gives me hope that once 2010 hits we’ll start to hit our stride and make a playoff push.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Hopefully I can catch you all on the blog sometime this week before my schedule starts to pick back up with everything again.

i don’t see how mike miller is going to be the difference maker between winning and losing games. he’s too passive and he’s only aggressive when the team is down double-digits.

with the wiz playing so up and down all year and they’re only a couple games out of the 8th spot says something about the east (it’s not good folks).

every loss is going to hurt the wiz no matter who the opponent is. there are no moral victories in the nba. a win against a quality opponent is the same as a win against the nets.

Haywood is a productive center. If someone out there has his +/- ratio compared to other Wiz players, I’d like to know it. It’s not the determining factor as to what a players contribution is on the court but it is one factor that can be used with other stats.

It looks like until we get Mike aka “Three-Pointer” Miller gets back we are going to lack the power to score and defend in the 4th quarter. I would like to see more inside out game displayed especially in the 4th /Money Quarter. We have the best penetrators in the game with Boykins and Agent Zero so lets use them. They have multiple options the can implement with drives to the basket and ones, drive and dish to Haywood for the high percentage dunks or drive and dish out to the winds for Foye or Arenas or Boykins.Caron stated the Big Three Gets the Big Bucks to finish games so lets do just that! I feel if we lock down on defense with a flex or moving zone and killer rebounding we might have a Great Chance of closing out these Easy Close Games!

as someone who has defended haywood in the past on this blog, let me say that you can’t use this season’s stats as a measure of what type of player he is and what type of player he’ll be.

the reason is simple – IT IS HIS CONTRACT YEAR.

haywood, the more i watch him play, is the eastern conference’s erick dampier. he plays hard when there’s a reason to play hard (money) and uses other excuses to cover up his weaknesses (etan, coach doesn’t like me).

flip has been yapping about andray’s inconsistency. well, what about haywood’s? what happenened to his excellent start with all those double-doubles?

if haywood leaves the team after this season, the wiz will be about the same at the center position. haywood isn’t a guy where the team is going to feel a major backlash if he departs.

on a different topic – randy foye.

to me, randy plays much better with the regular starters (arenas, butler, jamison, and haywood) than when he has to play with the second unit. the stats may not show this, but his confidence is higher when there are all-star guys around him.

miller seems to be able to play with any group; therefore, i’m suggesting to have miller come off the bench and boost the second unit instead of him starting.

so, my first team will stay as

arenas
foye
butler
jamison
haywood

and the second team players shall be

boykins
young
miller
blatche

DJ what is the Win/Lose stats when Agent Zero goes to the free-throw line more then 14 attempts in a game! The refs are not giving Agent Zero the same respect King James , Kevin Durant or D-Wade is getting so we just have to take extremely hard fouls and get beatup on a daily basis! I would truely like more consistency in the officiating when it comes to Gil!

Comment from wizards_fusion
Time December 27, 2009 at 7:16 PM

@ Aundra:

Respect is earned and Arenas has to earn those free throw whistles again. He lost all while being gone 2 seasons + there are a lot more new refs in the league that doesn’t know his game.

The more Gil drives the lane and gets contact the more the refs know he’s serious about drawing fouls and he’ll be at the charity stripe.

The guys you mentioned – LeBron, KD, and Wade – are more indefensivable than Arenas when they do certain things on offense.
