Game Day Sixers
7:52 AM EST…So it did snow here…Dave Johnson just back from the west coast this AM…I went from Phoenix to San Diego to spend some time with relatives and now back and ready for some wins…There will be a switch in the starting lineup….either Nick Young returns or Randy Foye will move into the starting two-guard spot… DeShawn Stevenson has been struggling offensively and as Flip Saunders noted yesterday it looks as if his shot has changed and that may be a result of his back injury….But Wizards struggles have not been about one player…It has been an interesting few weeks….The Wizards had won four of five and then lost six straight by four points or less..so throwing the Phoenix loss out it has not been about effort. I think this team understands the formula to win—better ball movement is certainly essential and that will actually help on both ends of the floor ..it is about doing it on a consistent basis…….alright so you guys know the drill and spread the word …BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 7:00 PM —with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.
5:55 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in from Verizon Center….no Iverson tonight because of knee injury…but Lou Williams is back playing after being out with a fratcured jawbone.
6:58 EST …starters are in Arenas and Randy Foye in the back court…Jamison and Butler forwards and Haywood at center..Sixers will go with Holiday and Green at guards Young and Iguodala and forwards and Dalembert in the middle

So I just looked at the game notes, and apparantely Javale McGee only needs 5 more blocks to have 100 career block shots….this is also significant because the last time the Wizards played the 76ers on 11/24 McGee posted a career high 6 blocks in only 14 minutes!! hopefully he gets his blocks tonight! Go Wizards!!!

I hope whoever does not start at SG tonight, both Nick Young and Randy Foye get good amount of playing time tonight because it will be tough matching up against all the guards the 76ers have without these two getting good minutes!

As long as the Wiz don’t play like the Bulls and Redskins last night, I’m good.
I’m disappointed that the Wiz seem so desperate for Mike Miller’s return to “right the ship”. Even Flip is leaning that way when he’s providing excuses on why “so and so” shouldn’t start. I’ve never heard any coach say the stuff Flip says about Nick Young, for example, to the media. It’s like he’s belittling him.

Flip Saunders prefers to let veterans get more playing time and make younger guys “earn their time”, even if the younger guys should go in at certain times during games…..look at what happened to Jason Maxiell when Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace were still on the Pistons and Flip was coaching……the guy was proven to be a decent defender, yet he barely got any playing time

Go wizards!! Yesterday someone forgot to mention larry hughes as one of the good two guards we have had over the years. I really hope the wizards can jumpstart thsi season because the east is so wide open after the 5th spot and the wizards just need to win some games.

stevenson never had a shot
he mightve been getting lucky
u can just tell his shot is horrible
he fades/leans left when he shoots and he also fades back
and he even does it when hes wide open
so thank god hes not starting anymore.

I understand Flip’s strategy to get Andray and others used to the role of playing off the bench. But this team is desperate for wins. I dont care about long term rotation concerns right now. I want to see the guys on the floor for the most minutes that will give us the best chance to win now!
To me, that means starting Caron at the 2 and putting Andray in at the 4 and giving him 35+ minutes.

@ Wizfan4life
You’re absolutely correct in your assessment on how Flip operates. However, you missed one important point why veterans played more than the young guys in Detroit – because the vets can win a championship and the youngins couldn’t.
Realistically, if LeBron didn’t turn into a 7-headed monster and if the Pistons cared about their bread-n-butter defense like the Celtics did, the Pistons would have been facing the Spurs and Lakers in the Finals and they may have been able to win there.
I don’t believe the Wiz were championship ready this season (as some bloggers have also opined during this past summer and preseason), so not playing the young guys that can play (i.e., Blatche, Young, McGuire, and McGee) defeats the purpose of building a stronger bench.
Most coaches typically go into an 8/9-man playoff rotation because the stakes are so much higher and every loss is one closer to the end of a grueling season. For Flip to do this from Day 1, it is making less sense to me as each day passes. I thought we have learned from the Eddie Jordan mistake that overplaying your starters in the regular season will guarantee an early out in the playoffs – no matter who the opponent is.

Ya know – if the Wiz continues to slide against improving but still mediocre opponents in the next 6 games, I think we’ll see the lineup of
Arenas
Butler
Miller
Jamison
Haywood
And these guys will play at least 40 minutes per game.

butler cant play the 2
his ball handling skills arent good enough for him to play the 2 and he doesnt have a reliable 3 pointer. his best weapon is his midrange jump shot. when he drives in hes out of control and gets too many offensive foul calls and turnovers.
our best starting lineup is
arenas, foye, butler, jamison, haywood
when miller comes back he can replace foye at the 2
and foye should be 6th man in the rotation

Anyhow. I’m hoping for a win. We need to start winning at home. If we’re going to matter at all in the playoffs we have to start winning the home games too. I don’t think we have been a great team at home this year… which is ironic because I think we’ve been better on the road lately.

There is nothing wrong with DeShawn.
He can walk.
He can talk.
He “can’t feel his face”.
However, DeShawn is now both the Lion and the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz (no pun intended). DeShawn needs to find his courage and his heart if he wants to help out this team.
It’s all in his head – that’s what I think.

This may sound crazy but this is how I feel. I feel that you cant judge them until they start winning. Does that sound crazy? No matter how bad you think they are, I think we all agree that at some point they will get a win streak going wether it be 10-15 games or wether its something modest like 3-4. Once that happeneds then you can really judge because you can tell that they havent got started yet and no matter how bad you think they are, they are not this bad.
Now after that win streak, if we go back to being garbage then you can say this is who we are but if we just start to click then things will truly change for the better. People hate excuses but sometimes there are some legit excuses. The fact is that we do have a brand new coach, a new system, alot of new players, alot of guys who have never played together before or played much together, we started the season with AJ missing a ton of games, now MM has missed a ton, the guys have looked lost in the system early, and most of all our Franchise guy looked like a shell of his former self and is just now starting to come around.
The win streak is coming and thats when you judge. Even in the games weve won this year, most of them have been crap wins. We barely win even against bad teams. When we have a 2 or 3 game stretch where we blow some teams out and win like 5 of 7 games or more then thats is when you start to judge us but as of now we just havent gotten over the hump so I dont think its really fair.

From Michael Lee’s WPInsider:
“Um, the East only has five teams with winning records. It’s so bad that despite the Wizards’ horrible start, they are still just two games out of the eighth spot — and 3 ½ games out of the ninth spot. So, with Mike Miller set to come back some time in the next week or two, and Arenas and Butler moving closer to finding comfort out West, Saunders still believes the Wizards are capable of turning things around.”
- -
Gosh, mediocrity has hit an all-time low! No wonder no one on Team Wizard is panicking. Disappointed? Yes. Frustrated? Yes. Feeling desperate? No. It’s like having a .320 winning percentage is sexy.
If bad basketball is acceptable, then what is good basketball? And should we no longer get fed up when misusing “you’re” vs. “your”? And what about the weather – just going to let Mother Nature do her thing and cause havoc on us?

i still like nick coming off the bench, he seems to like that role more. plus he can be instant offense at times, so that’s a good thing to have off the bench. i just wish he would get the ball more often, and get more isolation opportunities so the wiz can get the most out of him off the bench, and have something to go to when the big three aren’t on the floor.
i also like foye starting, as he like someone said, can play the larry hughes role of helping gil with the ball handling, and scoring in the backcourt. plus foye at the two has allowed him to score better, and play more relaxed in previous years, compared to playing at the one.

Flip with those dumb sub patterns again. If Gil was rolling then why sit him so long and let him get cold? Its stupid. Im also so sick of Caron & AJ’s horrible shot selection. Im sick of all the long contested 2 pointers early in the shot clock. The thing I always hate the most is how AJ automatically shoots it as soon as he gets it off the pick & roll when half the time its a super long off balance shot where he cant even see the rim when he recieves the pass. Yet he’s always the 1st one to cry about the younger guys play

Did Flip Just Save Our Season?
When he benched the starting 5 and they came back in, I dont think I saw really one bad shot the rest of the way and they attacked the hoop and went forward more in the 4th then theyve done like the whole season combined. If we play like that then our O is hard to stop but these guys just want to settle for long contested 2′s and pass it around the perimiter. Hopefully this carries over and we start attacking, espically Gil. If Gil mixes in the hard drives with his outside game then he will score an easy 30 every night and the other guys will feed off his aggression

Great game from (The Duke of) Earl.
Great game from Dom.

WHAT THE COACH DID BY PULLING ALL 5 STARTERS WAS IMMENSELY IMPRESSIVE BECAUSE I THOUGHT HE COULDN’T MAKE A COMMAND DECISION AT ALL. I WAS WRONG ONCE AGAIN AND I IMPLOY HIM TO DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL THE STARTERS START PLAYING TOUGH NOISE DEFENSE AND STOP TAKING CONSTANT CHALLENGED THREE POINT ATTEMPTS! WE HAVE TO HAVE CARON FIRED UP EVERY GAME AND HAYWOOD READY TO SAY ” HE HIT ME” SORRY PUNK! JAMISON WE JUST HAVE TO HOPE FOR THE BEST OF OLD WARRIOR WHO COULD BUT CAN’T DEFEND! @ ChenierFan – Too funny about EJ. That’s one of the things I hated about his coaching style also. I’m just glad we get to play against any team he coaches several times a year.
Like a lot of the bloggers, I believe that that might have been the best that I have seen Dom play. He was great on the boards in the 4th Quarter.
Obviously, the biggest deal was Coach Saunders pulling the entire starting 5 after about 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter apparently because they were not playijng with the energy level he expected. It was unbelievable when just about all of the fans stood and applauded the Coach’s move. Gil and Randy appeared to keep their heads in the game, but CB and AJ seemed angry and B-Wood looked like he didn’t care.
B-Wood was lethargic the entire game. He made little attempt at defense beyond three feet from the basket. I just don’t see him as a valuable contributor to the success of this team. When I see him as the last player to leave the court during shoot-around before the game, he seems focused, but when the game starts he appears determined not to leave the basket on “D”. I think he has his eye on the blocked shots category.
Earl was truly a spark. He did some great things to keep us in the game. I still don’t like the fact that he is too short for a point guard and he can’t see the entire floor.
CB came alive after the “starting five benching”. He moved with more energy. When he got the dunk off the great gIl pass in the 4th quarter, he was yelling at the crowd and punching the air…Loved the energy at that point.
When ‘Dray played the 4 spot, his defense on AI was terrific. When ‘Dray played the 5 spot his defense on Brand was terrific. He has a very solid game both of Offense and “D”.
Slick was effective in his less than 20 minutes with 13 pts on 5/10 from the field. More importantly, he looks as though he has taken a very serious interest in playing tough defense.
It really looks like Coach has decided that letting gIl score rather than distribute is the best offense. GREAT READ Coach. Bloggers have been saying that since game 2.
Finally, as a caller to the post-game show noted, it really looks as though AJ does not have full flexability in his shoulders. It looks as though he is “short-arming” the ball which is having a negative impact on his ability to score close to the basket, which is the strongest aspect of his game.
Glad for the win, even if it was against a weak team…but then, IMO any EJ-coached team will be playing at a deficit.
On the road again for three games. Let’s take 3!

I only saw about 2 min. of the game last night, but WOW… Flip has some cojones! I’m really happy to find that out.
I also think Antawn is playing hurt. He went from scoring 25-30 per night to this, almost immediately. He’ll get better, but maybe he needs a night off. Those terrible shots early in the shot clock do have to stop, though.
I’m so happy Gil is playing the way he is! Look out!!
Kudos to Nick, and really happy to see Randy get some time. And DMAC!! I wish I could have seen him play. Sounds like he had a good game. I love his hustle.
Onward… and hopefully upward.
