I expect us to win tonight. Gil & AJ never lose to GS and they usually play there best ball. Even when Gil was a bad PG with NO PG skills, he always looked like half Magic Johnson & half MJ against GS. He always lights them up.
If we wouldve won last game at the end, I would be 100% sure that Gil would put up his best numbers of the season so far tonight. Like he would go for 40 or 33 & 13 or something but since Gil lost it at the end, Im scared that he will go in the tank again like he’s done after some of our other losses where he’s choked.
However, I became more confident after reading Gil’s comments as he sounds like he really believes he is getting his game back and is about to go off. I would love to see him & AJ go off tonight like they normaly do against GS and then see Gil go off again on the Suns like he normaly does. Then I think he would be good to go the rest of the year

I could see Gil having one of his old fashion battles tonight. I could see him & Ellis going at it. Ellis has been a monster lately and Gil loves to kill the Warriors and is confident right now. Remember how he use to play against Baron Davis when he was on GS, how he played against Bynum on Detroit this Preseason, how he use to go at it with Jason Terry from his same school, and so on. I could see him starting a new one with Ellis tonight as both make alot of plays but Gil looks like the old Gil again and outplays him. BTW, when I say battle, I dont mean just 2 guys playing well. I mean they really go at eachother. Gil had very physical matchups with those guys and you could tell that it was more amped up. They did more special moves against eachother and everything. I could see that happening tonight

I had hope with your comment until I realized that teams the Wiz used to dominate in the last 4 seasons (Bobcats, Hawks, Clippers, and Kings) aren’t being dominated anymore.
If Gil goes for 40/13, he’ll help my fantasy team tremendously.

@ dmac
you mentioned jerryd bayless in your last posts. he is an intriguing young PG and he does have talent. i wonder, since i don’t know much about him – is he a pass-first PG (e.g., stockton, nash, kidd) or a shoot-first PG (e.g., marbury, jennings)?
derrick favors is NBA ready, but he’s only 6-9 and may be more like a jamison/blake griffin hybrid instead of being a true big man. a knock on him is weakness passing out of double-teams.

@ dcbutler
this is going to ruin your weekend, but ed tapscott is the wizards “scout”. his official title is director of player development, which by definition, means someone that oversees all the minor league players and staff (this sounds like NBDL) as well as move the players in and out of the system (grunfeld works with ed on this).
the blazers got “lucky” (instead of having a good scout) but the oden experiment, although looking good this year before another season ending injury, may be their “curse of the big man”. portland is a good basketball town and they’ve already had the sam bowie over mj and now oden over durant *mistakes*.

re: Butler being traded
“You got to play basketball,” Butler said. “If trades or anything like that happen, that’s the nature of the business. Me personally, I’ve been on three different teams in my short career. So, I don’t worry about that. I’m versatile. I’ll play anywhere.”

It sounds like CB3 is ready to move on if it happens and he doesn’t sound too upset if he’s moved. Is this a good thing or a bad thing for the Wizards?

re: Warriors
from a fantasy perspective, Anthony Morrow is due for a breakout game because he’s had 4 bad games since dealing with a death in his family. he scares me because all he does is shoot 3s – which the wiz are still weak at defending.
i think stevenson is going to play a lot of minutes – much to the shagrin of some on this blog. if you only focus on deshawn’s +/- numbers for the last few games, they’ve been decent, not like a -18.
lastly, our GOOD FRIEND and perennial wizards hater john hollinger of espn is advocating the wiz to break up. is he right or is he wrong?

I really don’t like the idea of Caron being traded. I don’t like the team to break up. Period. We’ve waited for such a long time to see the big three on the court together again, now let’s just cheer for them and hang in there just a little longer.
I still think that our problems have to do with players trying to define their roles within a new system. But with a little more time they will find their comfort level. And then, hopefully THIS group will be as good as everybody thought they could be. GO WIZARDS!!!

When is Saunders going to wake up and pull Stevenson for Foye. Stevenson has dropped in 11 points in the entire month of December so far. 90+ minutes of action…. We have lost 6 straight. Stevenson and Boykins are journeyman guards. Why is someone with a proven 15+ppg and 6 assists getting 5-6 minutes a game. I just dont understand it.

As far as trades are concerned, that seems to be what we need. problem is who can we get for who we have to offer? it would be great to get a carmelo or durant. but we dont have anyone to trade to get anyone of significant value back. not that would lead to a chmpionship. Rip Hamilton wont get it done. our best bet would be to try for Amare. if we cant get him, i dont see us getting any players that can change the path we’re on as a team.

@ GABBO
I’m serious – your nemesis is now back to being the team scout. In truth, there isn’t that much Tap is doing when the Wiz traded away all their draft picks.
Speaking of scout, former Wiz assistant coach Phil Hubbard (under Eddie Jordan) didn’t make Eddie’s 76ers coaching circle; thus, he’s now scouting for the Orlando Magic. I am unsure why the Wiz didn’t try to get Phil and allow him to be a scout for DC when this guy certainly knows basketball (led his UMich Wolverines to the 1976 NCAA finals and lost against Bob Knight’s UIndiana Hoosiers). He also played professionally for 10 seasons and he does have knowledge on the personnel for the Wizards.
The Snyder-Cerrato friendship is akin to the Grunfeld-Tapscott friendship. My head hurts thinking about these things.

Well, if the team is doing it, you just drop off your toy into the large cardboard cubes immediately ahead of the entrance lanes. There are Wizards reps that’ll give you a voucher for a free ticket to a future game.
The process works the same way for food drives and other charitable events at the Verizon Center.

this is the reason i say butler for rip:
the wizards main troubles right now are at the two and three spots. the two spot has been switched at least 4 times so far, between miller, foye, nick, and deshawn. and practically even arenas played there a lot when mike james was playing before his injury. so the two spot is unstable.
then the three spot, where caron doesn’t fit into flip’s system. people keep talking about a pure point guard, but what is your definition of a pure point? a guy who holds on to the ball 99% of the time like nash or cp3? i don’t see how that helps the team myself, especially with flip’s system, and that would only hurt arenas’ production. besides, arenas doesn’t handle the ball too much, but not too little, makes great passes, just needs to work on his shooting off the dribble.
so back to caron, if you trade him for rip, you ultimately fix the problems at the two and three spot, as miller can slip to the three, who can give you just about as many rebounds as caron, who moves the ball better, is unselfish, and is a hard worker. with rip, you are getting a guy who has played in flip’s system, plays good d, and knows how to win in playoff situations. someone mentioned health, but caron has been injured a good amount of time for the wizards, while rip has only had problems these past two years. don’t see caron having the upperhand in the health dept.
the only problem then would be the bench, which still needs a pass first proven pg, or mabye mike james is the guy we just don’t realize it.

What does everybody think of this trade:
Washington trades Mike James, Stevenson, Oberto, and McGuire to the Raptors
Washington also trades Crittendon to the Warriors
The Raptors give us Chris Bosh and cash considerations
The Warriors give the Raptors Anthony Randolph, and the Utah Jazz Deavan George
The Jazz give Golden State Ronnie Price and Kyrylo Fesenko
trading draft picks would obviously be assumed….of course this trade would only even be possibly close to being realistic if the Wizards end up a lottery team (which they are moving closer towards being)……this trade w/out the draft picks is even remotely considered realistic if it is looking like Chris Bosh will be leaving Toronto anyway, why not get a lottery pick, and Anthony Randolph (who is a great prospect right now)……the Warriors and the Jazz both get a little money in expiring contracts as well

so if in a billion years the trade i just proposed was even slightly possible, imagine this lineup:
1. Arenas

3. Butler
4. Bosh
5. Haywood

haywood should go off against the small ball. i expect a lot of zone defense from flip to counteract the small ball and shot jacking from the warriors. mabye a 4-1 zone is in order lol

Time December 18, 2009 at 5:17 PM
The problem with a possible Caron trade, is that he is playing so poorly it will be hard to get something worthwhile in return. But still, if we give up Caron and Foye and Blatche we may be able to target a Chris Bosh? I don’t think it is wise to move Blatche though. I don’t really think it’s wise to move Butler either. Something has got to give though. Losing 6 games in a row by 3 points or less has been completely demoralizing.
Comment from gray16
Time December 18, 2009 at 5:29 PM
@ rick, i’m pretty sure anytime an nba team trades for someone, they scout that guy enough to know what they are getting. it doesn’t take long to realize that caron just doesn’t fit well into the system, and see how he fit into the role previously. i’m pretty sure caron is still a hot ticket for many teams, but i can understand people not wanting to give up on him yet.
as for bosh, i don’t know if i like that trade. bosh is a little soft to me, he drifts further and further from the post as the year goes on it seems. plus i’m pretty sure he would leave after this season, but if if the wizards are looking for something big this offseason, it would make sense then. but if the wizards are trying to build off of what they have, adding bosh wouldn’t do much imo.
i also have doubts about trading for amare either. amare isn’t a good post option anymore, he just feeds off of pick and roles, even though an arenas/amare pick and roll sounds deadly. also amare’s defense has never been that good. but i wouldn’t be against a trade for him too much, it would just depend on who the wiz gave up for him, as he might not stick around either.

We don’t need any trades, the Wiz just need to shake up the line-ups.
If Flip does not see the light in starting Andray and saving Antawn for the 4th quarter, then please start and play Dom over Deshawn. Dom is a better defender, rebounder, looseball grabber, shot blocker at the defensive side of the court and perhaps better on the offensive side of the court because Deshawn’s skill level has slipped so much. I would also prefer to start Nick at instead of Deshawn also, but it looks like Flip is no longer a Nick fan.
We also need to see Javalle tonight, as well as all other nights.
That is a good questions about when Mike will return

chenierfan, flip would be very unwise (using nice words lol) if he were not to start antawn. look at who seems to be the only one to get the games started…
remember before antawn was on the team what happened? slow starts and more slow starts, then bam cleveland game and tawn helps with the start, and the poor starts seemed to go away. it’s not coincidence, tawn is the guy who gets the offense rolling. starting dray over him would just lead to bad starts again. again, that would be unwise imo.
as for the bosh trade, the raptors would gain nothing. expriring contracts does nothing when your just trading away a major expiring contract. the only reason to trade for expiring contracts would be to sign someone big, or to resign bosh (which wouldn’t be possible anymore). i think the raptors are going to take their chances with bosh, because there is no guarantee he doesn’t resign with them, but i’m sure if they did trade him away, it would be for something in return, not just expiring contracts.

OMG, I just saw an article on the insider where Flip talked about bad shot selection. Its like every time I say something then he says it. Here’s what he said:
When asked if he should try to create more fast break opportunities in order for the Wizards to get easier shots, Saunders shook his head. “You do your running game, which is fine, but you still have to make good decisions,” he said. “We did our running game in LA then all of a sudden, Caron [Butler] takes a one-on-five jump shot and [Gilbert Arenas] takes a 32-foot three-point shot with 18 seconds on the shot clock over a guy on the pick and roll. Those are not playoff-type basketball shots. Ideally, what you try to do is not just win games but learn the process that is going to help you be successful down the road, where you want to be.”
———————————————–
I also talk about our horrible shot selection but everyone knows that. The thing that shocked me was when Flip talked about that sequence in the Clips game. Thats also what I pointed to for the reason the game totally changed. After the game Gil & Caron talked about the sub patterns but it really changed when we were up 17 and then Caron took that dumb shot 1 on 5 and Gil launched an off balance 3 with 20 seconds left. They got the board on both, ran back and scored 2 quick baskets and got pumped.
They dont even realize what they were doing. They played great and unselfish to get up 17 and immediatly that started showing off and thought they could shoot up anything. Its just dumb. We need to be smarter

I rewatched the game and I like what Im seeing from Gil but Im still sad. He’s right arm likes great, his left arm looks great, his right leg looks great, but his left leg looks still dead and it probably wont ever come 100% back. Maybe not even 90%. I remember I use to be happy that if he had to hurt his knee, Im glad its the left because all righties want to keep there right side strong. Then you watch the games and realize that 90% of the time as a righty, you are going to leap & explode off your left leg, not the right.
Thats Gil’s problem right now. Even last night he made a ton of great shots in the lane but he shot every single one of them from ground level. I still have his 54 & 60pt games on tape and he was never MJ or Wade but Gil use to explode to the rim and finish high. Now he lets the ball go from the floor basically and thats always going to suck. He could get better as the season goes on and most guys feel alot better in there 2nd year back but like I said, he always feels an extra boost against GS so if he couldnt get off the ground against them then he probably wont get off the ground against anyone.
Thats the only thing that saddens me. Still, we all saw an old MJ do well even without being able to jump. Gil is like that. He still has mad handles and knows how to position his body. He also still has unlimited range and good vision so he will produce numbers. The question is wether he’s good enough to throw up monster games against the big 3 or 4 in the East because the old Gil could. IDK if this guy can consistently without that lift and that burst at times but he’s getting there.
The good thing is that just like GS, the other team he kills on the road is the Suns. He doesnt kill them like GS but he still lights them up. Im worried because he looked tired last night and its a back to back but I could see him going for 40 again tonight against Nash and his boy Richardson. Who is going to stop him in the lane? Frye? Yeah right
Comment from ChenierFan
Time December 19, 2009 at 11:24 AM
That was a spectacular game from Gil last night and perhaps Caron’s best game of the season – the baseline jumper was the “dagger” shot.
Other thoughts…
- I don’t get all these shoulder injuries. It looks like Antawn has problems with both shoulders and of course Mike had shoulder troubles. I suspect that the trainers are not treating these problems well. I remember a few years ago when Gil had a similar shoulder problem after running into the pick set my that Bucks player (Mason?) that he had to see an outside specialist who needed to pop it into place because the team trainers and medical staff couldn’t help. This sounds too familiar.
Now that the Wiz got the monkey off their back, it should be all downhill from here. They say the 8th win is the hardest (or something like that)
Comment from dcbutler357

My concern is that they played practically the whole game and we haven’t figured out the role (s) of our bench players. Who wants to go through the whole season of them playing a ton of minutes and then they are injured reserve, IF we make the playoffs!!!
I don’t even see how I keep seeing that anyone is saying that the “bench players” need to step up, when they aren’t even in the game. WHO is really coaching this team? I see the same agenda as three years ago. Maybe Ernie should come coach this mess.
YES i am glad for a win, but looking at how many minutes were played and WHO we were playing, this is not “contender” basketball.

It was great to get that gorilla of a losing streak off our back. I look to see more positive Hibachi nights going forward. A good test will be against Phoenix. Glaf to see CB have a breakout game.
Inspite of the all the trade rumors I personally don’t like mid season trades. The season is till young and feel we all want the Wiz to turn this thing around. Only time will tell.
dlts looks like you are the prophet of the night for predicting 40 and 13 from Gil who went 45 and 13.
Wizards_Fusion Bayless is a pass first PG.
I would not be wishing on Derrick Favors if AB developed a mean streak and went out and gave us 18 and 10 as a starter with AJ the 6th man.

hey i’ve been hearing a lot of rumors about a wizards trade, not just on here, but on other sites. a lot of people say caron butler may be the guy to go.
i have a proposal to the rest of you wiz fans:
caron butler for richard hamilton
i tried it in the trade machine and it works out. but look what it does for both teams. caron would fit great with the pistons, especially around gordon and stuckey. and for the wiz, rip could run his routes for flip again, and would fit into the role a lot better.
wiz lineup:
arenas
rip
miller (nick young, mcguire, or blatche till mike returns)
tawn
haywood
pistons lineup
stuckey
gordon
butler
villanueva
wallace
i think this would work out perfectly for both teams, what do you guys think. besides, isn’t it the pistons that always wind up with the old wizards players lol
