Game Day Sacramento

9:35am EST… SportzWiz checking in…Dave Johnson will be blogging shortly but I wanted to have a forum up for tonight’s game so you could talk about tonight’s matchup. Tonight’s the 2nd game of the 4 game West Coast road swing. The Wizards will face a Kings team that is very young but very big, especially in their starting lineup. Tyreke Evans is a 6′6 220lb rookie pg who is currently avg. 20 ppg, 5 apg, and 5 rpg. Joining him in the back court is 6′11 Donte Greene.

Also a quick reminder on tonight’s game. The game was originally scheduled for 10pm but it was picked up by ESPN and will now start at 10:30pm.

10:37 AM EST (7:37 AM PST)…Dave Johnson up and ready to go…okay I need to wait 12 hours..but this team needs some joy in the form of a win, It was a good two hour practice yesterday here in Sacramento….While the Wizards are getting close, there are still many stretches when the team will try to go for the “home run play” or the quick outside shot. Often that is when the Wizards have the lead and that is usually how they end up squandering the lead. Flip Saunders  said he looked back at old scotuing reports on the Wizards from when he was coaching the Pistons. He told the team the advice for playing against the Wizards then was to just keeping playing even when down because the Wizards will often shoot themselves out of games by taking too many  quick shots.  Saunders said it is a mentality he is trying to change. That is not to say Saunders doesn’t want to push the ball. Up-tempo play can be used to get a good shot when the defense is not balanced but it doesn’t help to take a quick shot when the defense is set in the half-court..…….BLOGCAST—radio and  blogging together—starts at 10:25 PM—–WE ARE LATE NIGHT AGAIN—with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is  a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.

8:54 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in…..this Kings team can score—close to 105 ppg…Tyreke Evans trying to join an exclusive class of rookies to average at least 20 points, five assists and five rebounds a game….The only other rookies to do it LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Oscar Robertson

10:09PM…starters are in…Tyerke Evans and Donte Greene at guards ..Specer Hawes in the middle and Jason Thompson and Andres Nocioni forwards….Wizards again will go with Arenas, Stevenson in backcourt..Haywood in the middle…and Butler and Jamison forwards

Tonight Is The Key Game

It sucks that weve started so bad and lost all these close games because even if we do go on a big run, we still only will be able to think about what couldve been. Like if we win 8 in a row to get to .500 then thats great but instead of being happy about being .500, we will moreso be thinking that we shold be 24-6 in the first 30 instead of the 15-15 we are now. Still, thats a long ways away but it could start tonight. Call me crazy but I thought the Clips game would be the hardest game of the trip, even moreso than the Suns because of the matchups. With that being said, we shouldve won but we just arent playing well right now and it starts with Gil.

The thing that keeps my hopes up is that Im a guy who always believes in the power of “1″. I believe everything can change on one game, one play, or one whatever. The Kings are a very beatable team and the Maloofs wanted Gil when he was a FA so hopefully he can show up. If we manage to win this game then I will feel good because its on National TV and then we follow that up with a National TV game in GS and if youre a Wiz fan then you know that Gil & Twan love to go off against there former team. They seem to always play there best ball against them, espically Gil. Then if we win 2 in a row then we go to the Suns the next night where again Gil always goes off and we matchup super well with them if we are playing good ball at the time.

All we need is one win and it could start it, espically tonight. If we win this game then I know that guys will be super pumped for the GS game. Gil & Twan wont let us lose that game and then we will feel like world beaters heading into PHX even though we only beat 2 garbage teams. The best case is that we win tonight and Gil looks good. If that happeneds then I guarntee you things will instantly turn around because I know they will carry that over to the GS game where Gil will either go for 40 or have like 30 & 13. Again, thats if we win and he plays well tonight. Either way I will settle for the win tonight and take it from there

BTW, if we arent aggressive tonight and cant beat this team then IDK what to say. Our roster should kill there roster and we should drive all day with the big men they have inside on defense. They can play a little O but on D we should score or get fouled all day if we attack the rim but I can count on that with our team. Im hoping they start tonight and Im hoping Gil just tries to jump with all his might when he does because he’s not getting any lift or burst on the left side of his body so therefore he has to go the extra mile and jump like he’s trying to dunk a 12ft rim or something but I dont think he’s mentaly able to do that right now

as far as arenas and company complaining about rotations, i don’t think they complained about the right thing.

i don’t blame flip for taking arenas out, he was on a string of turnovers and just got his fourth foul. he was losing control, sitting him was the best thing. as far as caron, he wasn’t doing much better, so getting someone in there for him wasn’t a bad idea either.

i think the problem was who he subbed in, and the lineup he had. dominic is good for rebounding and defense, not scoring. boykins was having a bad shooting night, so he was making the offense stagnant. and haywood was having as bad of a half as possible. and stevenson hasn’t had a good season yet. so only tawn was the guy who could hit shots, but boykins’ tendency to hold the ball for a long while, especially when being pressured, prevented him from getting the ball a lot of times.

this is why the offense couldn’t do a thing, and with haywood not getting a defensive rebound to save his life, the clippers were scoring every time down, even after two or three missed shots. so i don’t think the subbing out was a bad idea, but rather the lineup that was in. nick and/or foye should’ve been subbed in sooner. plus the people on the court (boykins and haywood most notably) were really struggling.

this team just needs a win now. udrih and evans should be the main guy to note, along with jason thompson.

although he had a rough night the other game, i still think starting deshawn might be a good idea. even though gordon gave him troubles, that shouldn’t be a surprise, good shooters always have. but deshawn has always shown to be good against people who rely on going to the rim, just like tyreke evans. put him on tyreke could lock him down, due to tyreke’s inability to hit a jumpshot consistently. plus deshawn’s size will help too. nick could do a good job as well, so either of the two would work.

in the end, go wizards, this is definitely the game to turn things around.

It’s not easy being a Wizards fan these days. I should be looking forward to tonight’s game, but I’m actually worried….I’m worried that not just the fans, but also some players have given up on this team. Once losing becomes a state of mind, it doesn’t matter how talented and gifted you are. If you can’t play with confidence, you’re not going to be better than mediocre. I sure hope we haven’t reached that stage yet. I still think we’ve got much more than just a decent roster…..and a great coach. I still think we can turn this season around!
Let’s get a win tonight and take it from there!!!

also did anyone hear that they are having 1 dollar beer night at arco arena tonight… yep they are trying to pack the house for the cameras tonight lol

hang in there jaba, the good thing is, the players on this team have all been on losing teams, they’ve been through this before, and flip has coached losing teams. the beauty of age is experience, and these guys have been through all of this before, so i’m not worried about the players giving up. they’ll get it together, might take a little longer than we want, but they’ll figure it out.

i certainly missed some heated discussions about the team during the last couple of weeks. but all in all, frustrations are starting to come to fruition for most. i don’t blame anyone for giving up or staying silent.

instead of repeating the sentiments of many, i went back and read through stories and viewpoints written about the Wiz from the national scene. there was 1 item that caught my attention more so now than before:

(*) the will to win (*)

this is a team coming off a 19-win season. at the current rate, this team is going to win 28 games total for a season that was supposed to bring some positives back into the psyche of the players that went through years of injury hell.

i wondered, after the excruciating pacers loss, if the team has lost the will to win. when good athletes bag-it-in (see randy moss), it is very apparent his/her mind is nowhere close to helping his/her team. i ask, where is the killer instinct? where is the intimidation factor like what tiger woods does by wearing a red polo and black slacks on sundays? i mentioned before that this team has absolutely no mental grit and i’m right – these guys are all jellyfish-brained. consider the following from the last couple of games:

– player x dribbling the ball off his feet and causing a turnover in crunch time
– player x missing crucial free throws in crunch time (more than once)
– player x missing an easy layup during crunch time
– player x turning the ball over 5 times a game
– player x issues a touch/soft foul and lets the other team get a 3-point play
– players x, y, and z speaking through the media to vent frustrations about teammates and coaches
– team x building a huge lead but swings into a huge deficit in a matter of minutes because of undisciplined play

all these examples above are characteristics of mental deficiencies and not physical deficiencies. all the guys on the team can shoot and make free throws and all the guys on the team can play defense. also, all the guys can stay healthy for 82 games. however, the current Wizards team always thinks along the lines of “not again” instead of “well, x happened and i’m going to change it so that y actually happens”.

contrary to what dave johnson says, a win does not solve the inherent problems for this team. to me, there is no difference between 7-16 (if the team loses tonight at arco) or 8-15 (if the team wins). i also don’t think a string of 2 or 3 wins will solve problems either. i do know that winning will stop the bantering on the blog/message boards and also among the big 3 until the next losing streak. the will to win, however, is far more important than an actual win – which is just a glorified stat. when the will is ultimately broken, the team is done.

if this team truly wants to win games, every Wizard needs to play the rest of the games like it is his last. if benching egomaniacs is the solution, then so be it. there is no more margin of error where guys can take games off for the heck of it. from what i’ve seen lately, the Wiz are not hungry and the team has no will to win. instead, they’re letting desperation dictate the outcome – which hasn’t be favorable at all. the basketball court isn’t congress – lobbying only can go so far.

the following is a slew of tidbits I want to get off my chest after reading what others posted

– for those that continue to complain about jamison’s defense, please watch the games again and tell me how many times arenas’ man beat him with just one pick or one screen or one anything? arenas is the worst defensive player on the Wizards. period.

– for those that complain about what stevenson was doing during the final pacer possession, let the record show that he did the correct thing by fronting dunleavy jr (his defensive awareness told him to do so during that state of confusion). for those that still doesn’t get it, please watch that play again and tell me who actually fouled dunleavy jr – i can tell you it was not stevenson but instead was the guy from behind, which was haywood. the refs got it right and haywood was the person to blame for that possession, if you care to put blame on someone.

– for those that complain why mcgee isn’t playing (aka JeffMalone1982), i’m so with you there. i’m rather angry at flip for being such a nincompoop. what is mcgee doing that is not getting him minutes? is it the way he’s not practicing correctly? mcgee, when he’s on the floor, looks very hungry to me and that’s a good thing. i’m not asking for mcgee to get starter minutes – i think 10-15 floor minutes is good for him. heck, i can see matchup problems for the opposition if both mcgee and blatche are on the floor at the same time. but since i am not employed by the team, i don’t know what i’m talking about.

I understand that ESPN is running a contest asking fans to design an offensive play for Coach Saunders to use. I’m the first one to complain about the WIzards offensive plays; however, my complaint is that the plays are not executed properly, not that they wouldn’t work.

The entire Wizards offense if based on pick & roll (this is the basic NBA big boy offensive set), primarily using the center as the pick setter. The real problem is that B-Wood just does not set the pick. He runs up there and as gIl starts to run his defensive man into B-Wood, B-Wood rolls to the basket looking for the pass. As a consequence, gIl is double-teamed and has to dribble backward to get free. It looks as though BH is more anxious to get a possible return pass for a shot than to execute the play.

If BH would stay put in the pick for about another 1/2 second, gIl would rub the defensive player off BH; B-Wood’s man (center) would have to take gIl and then when BH rolled to the basket he would be guarded by the man who had been watching gIl (a guard…layup).

Actually, AJ runs the forward/guard pick & roll with gIl very well, which is why he gets so many open looks for the 15-20 footer.

In the Nets game, AB and gIl ran the pick&roll to perfection which led to those open jumpers that AB kept hitting, or gIl getting the open shot…result 30+ for gIl and 30 for AB. The pick & roll does work if it is executed right.

Coach doesn’t need any more plays. Coach needs to make the players execute the plays or sit their butts on the bench.

i am offended by this espn insider contest. as for GABBO’s comment that it is the execution that matters, GABBO is 100% correct.

year after year, the madden videogames have the same plays. plays don’t change – only how the players that run them do.

Comment from therealbigthree
Time December 16, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Espn has sac as a 59% to 41% favorite to win this game even though the wizards have beat the kings eight times in a row. Wiz fushion i completely agree with your statement on gils defense after I saw how rondo blew by him down stretch on every play last week. Jamison’s lack of athletism hurts him and butler doesn’t bring the effort every game. I think the right players have to have the ball down the strectch because against phily, toronto, and the bucks we could have easily lost. My question is, why does every game the wizards play have to come down to the final play.

this season is rapidly getting away from us. the wizards have gotten so good at providing excuses for not winning over the past 1.5 years that i’m afraid people are not as upset as they should be. Even Saunders has become an excuse making machine and he did not even have to endure the debacle that was last season. tonight is a must win. otherwise i think some trades need to be made. this squad is just not cutting it.

Comment from therealbigthree
Time December 16, 2009 at 8:04 PM

Saunders should go into the locker room and tell everyone that at 7-15 they should already be planning next summers vacations but since they are in the east they are just two gb of the playoffs and should be thanking god. Seriously the fact that we still are in the playoff race should be motivation enough. The players should know that this is their last chance to prove they are a good team before they are totally destoyed in the form of trading twan and caron for nothing. It will be exactly like when the capitals traded away their big three of jagr, lang, and bondra for nothing. They were TERRIBLE for two years more and got lucky in the draft when they got the best player in the world in alex ovechkin. That is pretty much what the wizards are looking at.

We know how good of a team the Wizards can play when they are all on the same page. Now with that being said, they have only all been on the same page a few times this year. We need to realize that with Gilbert coming back after being out a few years, and Haywood being out last year we are NOT going to win a championship this year. (And yes I mentioned Haywood’s name because he is a huge key to this teams success.) It’s going to take time for this team to gel, and we have all been “witnesses” to that.
Now on the positive side, if we are patient we know that this 7-15 record could easily be 15-7. I mean think about it, our last five losses have been lost by a total of 11 points! A steal here, or a shot there, or….FREE THROWS MADE, we would not be having these conversations.
So lets all just take a deep breathe, realize the Wizards aren’t going to win the NBA Championship (no matter how badly we want them too) and just watch this team as they slowly start to come together, because I know that we will all be surprised how good they look around the all-star break.
Now, we do need to go out and win these games at home and on the road against teams that are A LOT worse than us…LETS GO WIZARDS!

at this point, it’s time to stop talking, and start playing. it doesn’t matter what the wiz say now, it’s their game that needs to do the talking.

leave the talking to dave and glenn, steve and phil, and us bloggers, i’m sure we can take care of it lol. but the players need to go out there and turn things around. like rick said, no more excuses, there have been enough of those these past years, time for the games to step up. of course i do have patience though, and time is definitely deserved, but progress needs to made, so let’s hope it starts tonight.

Time December 16, 2009 at 9:53 PM

Speaking as someone who basically stopped blogging because of the difficulty in watching the games without being driven mad, I think all of us have taken deep breaths.

There is a reason we are on here venting: we care about this team.

I know this:
We can teach a JV squad the logic behind playing with a lead:
Use the clock
Work to get quality shots
Get back on defense
Don’t let the other team dictate the temp

We can teach youngsters that if you are up by 17 and work the clock on each possession and get good shots, that even if we miss on 6 consecutive possessions we probably have burnt out half a quarter AND if we score just 1 of every three possessions we can probably hold on for an entire quarter. (of course, someone could argue that in the NBA hitting 7 consecutive 3’s is possible)

Anyhow, I know this team can gel… just hope the gel comes with a dose of smarts.

TYreke is 6ft, 5? 6? 7? We saw what tall guards did to Boykins. The only ones boykins can play are weak guards like delonte west or mo williams who cant only shoots 3’s/

I think one of the things we need to work on is defense. We’d probably be a better team if we worked on our defense out there… we’re allowing too many easy looks… to many drives to the basket. We probably would be doing better if we had better defense.

Comment from gray16

well let’s look at the bright side, there’s only a certain amount of ways to lose a game right?…

the wizards are bound to run out of ways to do it.

but like i said, for this team to be better, the bench is going to have to step up. and like you guys are saying, the defense is going to have to step up.

how is it not gil’s fault.. obviously good d but good offense is suppose to beat good defense anyday. You cant turn the ball over you have to make some sort of play… get a shot up or make a pass to a shooter when you have the ball at crunch time… he shouldnt of wasted that much time too. he played pretty good till then but thats what counts

bbman, you have to give tyreke some credit here man, that was just a great defensive play

and he was taking the time down, just like any other star does, so the other team doesn’t have a chance to win it, it’s not like i would want the game to rely on the wizards defense after they had just given up all those points, and as we saw with the pacer’s game, anything can happen

this season, with all the talent we do have. it is really showing our weaknesses. things we should do that comes naturally u would think like make free throws, rebound, hustle back, team defense, effort and just simply hustle are all missing. we are basically a team with players who does specific things good. gil likes too shot and twan. deshawn good d. nick good offense. blatche constantly inconsistent. miller great shooter. haywood is a piece the wizards better beg too stay! having a center is a must in this league. changes need to be made. i must say im dissappointed in caron. on offense he seems lost if he doesnt have the ball. and on defense he normally plays tough but where is the juice? haywood plays his role deshawn plays his role miller plays his role, orberto, mcgee and dominic. we have too many wanna be stars and not enough people who just wants too play

i dont agree at all… you cant say its just a great defensive play because gil got the ball stolen from him maybe if he made a move to the rim and got blocked by tyreke… but gil got nothing out of the possesion when it mattered the most

one saying i would like to bring up, one of the oldest sayings in the book

“if it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger”

the wiz just need to take lessons from this game, and continue to work.

the reason i feel the wiz lost tonight was due to the bench not stepping up, running a very stagnant offense usually ending with a late second one on one, or quick shot. that coupled together with some tough calls shifted the momentum, allowing the kings to get the lead and never give it back.

the small ball by the kings had the wizards running to close out all night long, and it helped the kings get a lot of points, as we saw casspi and nocioni get a combined 42 points. as far as evans, the wiz played pretty good defense against him, but you can’t stop a player as good as him, only try and contain him, which they did ok at.

fast break points for the kings also played a big part, but alot of points came off of unfortunate turnovers, or players falling down leading to undermanned defenses. but they can learn from that as well.

again, the wiz need to just keep learning and working, they can only learn from these losses. the best way to turn a loss into a win is to learn from it.

For future references maybe next time Gil has a chance to make a last second shot, they’ll use a pick & roll to get him by his man. This year so far he’s been getting his pocket picked too often when trying to go 1 on 1 in critical situations.

We Lost Again, But…………………………………………..

It sucks that we lost again for seemingly the hundredth game in a row, all by seemingly 1 point. It also sucks that we cant play a complete game ever. It sucks that early in the season we were playing good D but our O sucked and now were playing solid O but our D sucks. It still sucks that Flip cant figure out a rotation and the players still dont seem confident in this system. All of that sucks and there is probably even alot more than that, but…………………………………………

it may sound crazy but winning honestly isnt more important to me than Gil looking good. It truly isnt. When we were winning some of those games earlier but barely doing it and looking like crap in the process, I never felt that we were anywhere near being good. I made threads saying the win is nice but none of that matters if Gil doesnt look right again because we have no chance of wining the East with Gil playing like that. Therefore I honestly rather lose and have Gil look good than win and have Gil look bad because I believe that if he looks good again then everything else will either fall into place or be easier to fall into place. Is that crazy? Its like I was never happy when we won but Gil had 6pts with 4ast and had no aggression. I was never happy win or lose when Gil looks like a one legged man who couldnt score 30 if you gave him a 20pt head start. This was only 1 game so we still dont know about Gil for sure but he looked pretty good physically and he’s been getting better & better over the last 8-10 games or so. He still has some games in between where he looks like he has nothing just like last game but my thing is this:

I said last year when he came back that with all his injuries I never had a doubt that he would come back like the same Gil until his very last one because he looked horrible physicaly in those 2 games last year. He started off this year better but quickly went down hill for a long time. Lately he’s picked it back up but he’s still had games like the Clips game where it looks like he cant do anything. Thats when I start worrying that we are finished because we have him for 5 more years and he may never even be close to the same guy again. Thats why Im ok with tonight because it gives me hope that he can get his game back and thats the biggest piece of every problem. If he’s right then the rest will fall into place. Now some will get mad about his play down the stretch but I never do. How can you get mad when he hasnt played in 2 years? He’s rusty. Its going to take time for him to conistently make those plays but my thing is what is his burst like, what is his game tempo like, what is his elevation like, what is his J like, and what is he like mentaly? All of those were pretty darn good tonight and if he can keep this up then he can easily average like 26 & 8 with 45% shooting.

Im not worried about the turnovers. Most of them have come from rust and injury. If he stays with a bounce like tonight then they will go away soon enough and he eventually will stop losing the handle like he does on nearly every play now. So again to end it off, it sucks that we lost but I like what I saw from Gil tonight and if he plays like this then we can bounce back. If he plays like this then he can light up GS tomorrow like he always does and hopefully soon get Miller back to see what happeneds. I would like to give Foye one start also. I feel like eveyrone has had a real chance except him. Since his injury he only gets scrap minutes off the bench. He’s like NY, he needs minutes. It wouldnt be a big deal if DS was playing well but he’s not. DS sucks on O and his D is horrible now compared to where it was in his 1st season with us. Give Foye one start to see what happeneds or go big with Oberto and move CB to the 2

Despite everyting I said above about Gil looking good, the bad thing is that he looked good and we lost late with him messing up. Its bad because it seems like when that happeneds, Gil gets depressed again. I bet anything that if he had scored at the end then he wouldve went to GS and put up 40 and he still might but now he is more likely to come out sad in that game and go 3-11 with 8pts and 5ast in 30 lackluster minutes. Thats the bad part about all of it. I just hope he can say that he messed up but he felt better and he can makeup for all that against his former team and light them up but Im not confident that he will do that

Gotta feel for Gil and the organization. After being off the court for two years, is this the approach that we need to take for the sake of the team?

Looking at the boxscore, four players played close to 40 minutes. AJ and Gil both had 30, Brendan had 14 rebounds, Caron had 16 pts and stevenson played 20 minutes and made the teams even. Total rebounds were basically even for the teams. Both benches scored 19 points, we had more offensive rebounds, we had 5 more fouls….really can’t get a feel for what happened, looking at the boxscores….ONE thing that sticks out is we had only 13 assists and they had 21

Gil has fouled out in two consecutive games, does it mean he’s trying to play D more or that he just doesn’t have it physically yet? Is this season just to get Gil back in shape for future years?

What is considered solid minutes off the bench? Blatche had 18 Boykins had 15 DMAC13, NY 12, Foye 5. When were the minutes played, and how were the players used. McGee and Oberto had another DNP, as well as the others who didn’t get in, but I guess they are still hurt.

Is looking at a box score deceiving or does it tell the story(it really doesn’t give me the same umph, that lil hustle play that is seen but not accounted for, that helping out on d, etc….Heck, who knows, maybe i’m not using some type of deductive reasoning when looking at the numbers…lol….i’m just a blogger)?

One thing we do know, is that we don’t have the guy that can close the show right now, or is that guy on the team and not getting the call?

Questions, questions questions, that only a few within the org can answer. See ya at the next blog. Until then,
THIS IS STILL MY FAVORITE TEAM :!: :!: :!:

but I really want to cheer and just jump up and say YES with a balled up fist!!!!!!!!!! Well, the redskins did win, so I guess that helps ;-) and the caps are rolling along…..I guess I’ll just have to accept this as our fate, until someone gets tired of the same ole same ole….Peace.

Other stats, we took 9 more shots, out of 95 shots AJ, CB and Gil took 63. Out of the three, caron took the least amount (19), which was more than anyone on the other team took in total (evans took 18). Now, that tells a story….or does it?

Okay, so more research leads to more questions…..sooooo we had a total of 13 assists, boykins had 2 and dom 1. Sooooo we have stevenson with 1 and he’s only shot three times…hmmmm, for 20 minutes he touched the ball and did something four times?? AJ with no assists and 11-22 50% is good right?Caron was 7-19 with 1 assist, Gil 10-22 with 6 assists….I wonder if this is what I would see on average, if I looked at the boxscore on a regular basis?

When will I be able to cheer again?

My last post, then I’m done for the evening………we lost every quarter, and was down by nine going into the fourth. Who brought us back in the game? Who needs to get yelled at, to get in gear, when four players get close to 40 minutes? What is the role of the bench, does our bench get the same opportunities as a regular NBA team (two players on their team came off the bench for nearly 30 minutes, so it must not be our benches fault, but this is just looking at one game)? Looking at the stats does clear some things up, but looking at just one game, doesn’t tell the whole story……so what is the “story” with this team (rhetorical)? Looks like a team of four, with piecemeal players to me……………..

I am going to share my heart this morning some of you may agree with my comments some may not. First of all the Wizards are in a deep funk.
The Wiz organization has had high hopes for this team for this season.
Gil’s return, Brendan’s return, a new coach, new players added and a hope that the young players namely AB and NY would improve.
Yet we are having the same if not worser results when see how we are losing.
Well I believe that it is not all Gil’s fault even though he has missed some opportunities to close it for us on more than one occasion lately. I believe that because of the type of person Gil is that the bad karma or whatever it is will go away. He can’t lose his confidence.
In my observation I want to say like I said a year ago. I believe that Gil is not in the right position. I believe he should be at the 2 spot.

This about sums it up (from Tom Knotts of Washington Times) and if I may say so, HOOVER DAM I’M GLAD SOMEONE IS SAYING IT:

As long as Arenas is out of sorts, stuck on uncertain, the Wizards are conditioned to follow his lead.

It would be no different with any other NBA team featuring a scaled-down version of a franchise player.

It is on Arenas to make plays in the closing minutes of games, to hit big shots and to cripple the opposition’s defense. He is not doing those things these days.

That is why no one can be too critical of Earl Boykins and the turnover he committed in the final seconds against the Clippers on Monday.

Boykins was not on anyone’s radar in the upbeat days of training camp. That he has been entrusted with finishing games is a response to the shortcomings that afflict the point-guard position.

Boykins has handled the assignment with a certain efficiency but hardly in the manner of the old Arenas.

That guy is not with the Wizards at the moment.

The person who is passing himself off as Arenas is missing his shooting legs, his lift at the basket, his timing, his feel for the game.

That is his two-year debt to an unfeeling game.

We need to get Foye back in the starting lineup with Gil because alongwith Mike Miller I believe they match up with Gil the best. Gil needs to be released to play his game as a scorer first versus trying to be the consumate point guard. Gil’s strong suit is his scoring ability. We need to also improve our defensive approach.
Mostly every team that we have played that has beat us had their best games against us. Meaning we are easy pickings. However this year turns out we need to make some offseason moves to free up Gil to the 2 guard. Meaning we could use a John Wall alongwith a Chris Bosh.
we may have to use CB as trade bait to get another player that better fits our personnel. I am not saying this because I just want to trade CB> I am saying this because we can’t move Gil and AJ is not what other teams want where we can get equal or better value in return. Andray should be starting for us and producing in a way that I am not doing this blog. But he has not put AJ on the bench to be the sixth man. No more sugar coating. If we can’t get John Wall or or a Derrick Favors we need to give up something to get something back in return to improve this team. If we don’t turn it around we have no alteternative EG but to try another approach. I love Gil I just believe are trying make him be something he is not. This has affected him mentally beacuase he trying to be a Chris Paul type/Steve Nash type point guard. Gilis a basketball player that can score and sething on Hibachi fire. take the chains off of him and let somebody else play the point so he can play his game and help us win some games.
Just my opinion.

Looking at the stats, you will see that the Wiz and the Kings played just about even. So it is small wonder that it ended up a 3 point game.

The problem is, given the personnel and the experience, the Kings should not play within 20 points of the Wiz. What happened?

Jamison, Butler, Arenas and Haywood played way too many minutes. Stamina has a bit to do with it, but, more importantly, gIl, AJ and CB stink defensively, and B-Wood is slow and lazy and can’t defend a man 10 feet from the basket. Consequently, they can not stop the other team from scoring.

If gIl can’t make the plays because he is rusty; don’t force him to keep trying to make the plays. If gIl can’t make the plays because he simply can’t do it anymore; stop going to him all the time.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 17, 2009 at 9:17 AM

gIl is not a point guard and neither Earl nor Foye nor Critt is the answer to the point guard problem (and it IS the major problem). We need a quality point guard. We have way too many jump shooters. We have a center with tons of potential sitting on the bench. How about trading a jump shooter and a center for a good point guard and some potential?

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense

I’m personally very tired of seeing that starting lineup from three year’s ago take the court. Those days are gone forever. DSS has no business on the team, never mind starting. His offense is non-existent and he is no defensive stopper.

gIl’s playing out-of-position; B-Wood is having what everyone says is his best year. If this is his best, give me someone else’s mediocre. This is not CB’s offense. He struggles to try to get into any rhythm. AJ can certainly score and early in the game he rebounds, but he shouldn’t be playing 41 minutes a game.

Time to shake it up. Come on Ernie, do whatever it takes to put a winner on the court.

What is with this team? I mean losing to the Clippers and the Kings??? We might as well get the guy from one of the concessions stand at the Verizon Center to play, because they seem to do their job better than the Wizards players do there job!!! And it’s not Flip Saunders, it’s the players…..Why does Randy Foye almost not play anymore? During preseason and the first month of the season he was dropping 17,18, and even 22 points a night, now he sees limited time because DeShawn almost has to start because of his status on the team for the past few years…….maybe the Wizards are intentionally losing so they can have a chance to win the lottery, or with their luck get the 5th pick again, trade Mike James, Oberto, Stevenson, and possibly McGuire/Crittendon for an all-star type player……last night on espn.go.com’s trade machine I worked out 2 trades, where the Wizards gave up all those players (minus the pick in this case, but I would say throw in a future 1st round pick) for Elton Brand and a 2nd round pick…..now that might seem bad, but it would be like having another Andray Blatche/Brendan Haywood type player coming off the bench, and would give more room for playing time for Foye, Young, and McGee……that is probably not a good trade, but then I worked out one where the Wizards get Marc Gasol, but lose the lottery pick (assuming we do get a lottery pick)

Facts and Thoughts:

1) Wiz have not won a single game in December 2009.

2) Wiz’s last home win was against Philly. Guess what, with 2 games left on the LeftCoast trip, the Wiz is coming full circle again because Philly is up again next Tuesday. I’m not predicting a positive outcome against the Warriors and the Suns, so something’s gotta give.

This is the second time these long losing streaks occur as a result from one other team. The first streak started with losing against the Cavs in Cleveland (which should not have happened) – which led to a 6 game losing streak until the win against the Cavs in DC. It seems like another losing streak may come to an end after 8 games – but by then, the team is already in shambles.

What I typed sounds a lot like what Bill Simmons would write. And I don’t work for Elias Sports Bureau.

3) I save a lot of money when the Wiz don’t make the playoffs. I mean A LOT.

4) Washington DC has supplanted any other large city with having the worst pro sports franchises. It was Philadelphia and Cleveland, but they are just an afterthought. The fans in Chocolate City are suffering more than you know.

Team relocation isn’t that far fetched – if Ted Leonsis doesn’t care about supporting an NBA team.

Well, it’s because NO ONE is coming to the games. And this was when the team was actually winning. Imagine now – actually you don’t have to to imagine since I’m there most of the time – I’m telling you that at best, Verizon Center takes in about 12,000 fans for a Wizards game (less for a bad opponent and slightly more for a good opponent).

I think Abe held on to the team as long as he could knowing that it was losing money year after year. He had to sell bits and pieces of his team away because of the losses. Just because people are wealthy in NOVA and Beltway Maryland and DC doesn’t mean they’re flocking to see the Wizards.

A big difference between the Wiz and Caps is that even when the Caps were doing bad (before Ovechkin), they still had rich fans going. The Wiz, on the other hand, doesn’t have the same luxury.

With Vinny Cerrato resigning and Bruce Allen gives the Redskins hope for a better future.
I nlight of Abe’s recent passing one of the best decisions he may have made was give Ted Leonsis the opportunity to to run the Wizards.
That simply means a new set of eyes will be good for the Wiz. Ted is the type of owner I feel would do what is necessary to improve the franchise. The number one denial that EG has to understand is that Gil is not a PG but a Guard (scoring) Eddie Jordan had hope to mold Gil into a Jason Kidd type but it did not pan out . But Eddie simply let Gil play his own game by helping the Wizards put points on the board and win some games which is what happened until the injuries came. Now what is important is not to keep hoping the big 3 is going to do it. That chapeter just like the Chris and Juwann chapter is over. It is time to make some smart moves and get us a pg and pf that can come in and help right away next year.

Ted Leonsis is not the savior for the Wizards. He knows hockey but not basketball. Having Ted in charge of the Wiz is like having a repeated Cerrato.

If the Caps didn’t get to draft Ovechkin, would everyone think Leonsis is such a great owner? I don’t think so. The Caps would be a middle-of-the-road team and not an elite team.

All season long, no one on this blog has put Ernie Grunfeld under the microscope and see what he’s done right and what he’s done wrong. Most have focused on the Wizard players and a few have focused on the coaching staff.

It seems like game-in and game-out during these horrendous losing streaks, Grunfeld’s plans have not worked at all. The Big 3? More like the Big 1 with Little 2. The Miller and Foye trade? More like Hurt and Hurter (one guy’s hurt and the other is hurting the team). Having a hand in bringing Flip Saunders into DC? Flip’s job is twice as complex because he has to de-program the Princeton offense from Arenas, Jamison, and Butler + replacing it with his offensive gameplan. After 23 games, it is taking a toll and it is not a quick fix. Also, Flip has to win right away and we all know this is not going to happen.

There is no magic potion of quick fixes in the NBA unless you trade your draft picks for 2 hall of famers with a team panache for defense. Grunfeld needs to take the blame for not having the insight to know that change takes time. Instead of talks about championships, he should have talked about bringing back Arenas and Haywood into the mix and left it at that. The bar was set too high and guys like Butler kept spewing these sentiments when in reality the team is closer to Square 1 than Level 5.

“It’s frustrating, especially for me because I live for moments like this,” said Arenas, who blamed himself for four of six losses in this slide. “The team has been behind me since we started and I feel like I’m letting them down right now — especially when they’re so used to the glory days. At the end of the day, you’ve got to take your bumps and your bruises. I can’t hit every game winner. It all evens out. One day, I’m going to start hitting them again.”

This is the most “leadership-like” thing Gil has said all season long. I’m glad he’s taking the blame for his mistakes. I’m also glad that he’s seeing the other side when the pendulum swings positively back for the Wizards.

The team has been as patient with Gil’s comeback as it can be, but we’re nearing the 25th game mark and the team is struggling to close (given whatever opportunities to do so).

what will arenas have to do to prove that he is a pg?

he runs the offense, you could see him directing it last night, he was very vocal, he made great passes, but he has a tendency to want to score.

and i’m tired of hearing about chauncey billups this, chauncey billups that, who is much like arenas. they both are scoring pgs, yes chauncey has always been a scoring point. the first season chauncey was placed into a situation like arenas is now, it took him a while to get comfortable with it, just like it is arenas. but after a while billups really grew as a quarterback point guard, much like arenas is showing.

again, arenas is a scoring point who hasn’t played in two years and is for the first time being put into a situation where he needs to direct the offense. if no one can see the improvements in arenas as a point guard, i don’t know what to say, but go back to last night’s game, and look at how much he was directing the offense, especially tawn with the hot hand. look at how he directed caron to post up the smaller guys, even though caron just took bad shots from there. look at how much smoother the offense runs with arenas on the floor. arenas is a point guard imo, and i think he is showing us that.

LOL! You’re right, therealbig3 – Wiz wasn’t all Ls in December. The team’s been losing so much, I equated all their games to be in the dumpster.

I don’t think “Sports Guarantees” mean much anymore. In the past, people would jump on this stuff as bulletin board material and debate at the consequences and what not. Nowadays, if your guarantee is good, nothing happens. If your guarantee is bad, nothing happens.

However, coming from Flip and Randy Whitman, whom grew up with KG and lost all those first round battles, the playoff guarantee is rather inspiring. In theory, an East team can’t lose more than 38 games this season to have a chance at the 8th seed. With 59 games left in the regular season, the Wiz needs to go 37-22 the rest of the way. That’s a tall order.

I didn’t see the game becuase of business travel, but I’m not sure I need to see the games because of the predictable pattern going on.

If Flip would start Dom instead of Deshawn, the Wiz win these games. Dom plays hard and is the only Wizard who has a very underrated talent – a nose for the ball. Getting loose balls is something the Wiz are terrible at and that is worth about 8 pts a game. Presto – a winning record over the past few games.

If I’m Andray, I ask for a trade. There is no point for him to waste away playing a non-active role.

Same for Randy Foye. This is a guy who averaged 16 pts/game last year. That’s impressive. And his diminished role this year makes him look like a D leaguer.

The Wiz are banking on the big three but this isnt’ the same big three as they were 3 years ago. Antawn is on the downside of his career, Caron is undersized at his position and not playing at the same skill level, and Gil is rusty and should not be a full time point guard

Flip needs to make some changes – try something!

On Ted Leonsis. My understanding, at the time, was that Ted got minority ownership in the Wizards and majority ownership of the Capitals and Mystics. When Abe decided to step down Ted was to take full control. As far as I know that hasn’t changed.

Not a good season so far guys. I’ve been slow to post as I don’t really have much good to say. I can’t understand how guys that have played the game their whole lives can play the game so inconsistently. Is it the system? Is it too many egos clashing? They didn’t clash before… why now? I don’t really see Flip putting any of them in “horrible” situations as happened last season. The ball movement isn’t there, the “want” to defend is there only in a select few, NO HEART. I don’t get it. I don’t know about the playoffs but I would like to have a better record than last season :)

in my opinion, dom’s game went down this season as opposed to last season. the only reason is because he’s not getting minutes.

i will say this again – why is mcgee not playing? there are no shot blockers on this team except for this guy! he’s an intimidating force in the paint!

i have to really wonder if flip’s ignorance for defense was actually true when the pistons ben wallace complained that flip doesn’t run defensive drills in practice.

with this group of wizards, the offense is not the worry – it should always be defense.

if the wiz is 11-40, i’m going to advocate tanking the season and hope to win the lottery for the rights to john wall.

lebron said he’s the real deal – i have to agree. john wall doesn’t lose and that mentality is the same as kobe and wade.

Wizards_fusion I appreciate your recent comments. EG is our Vinny C. Thanks for letting the real big 3 know that a couple of wins comment is him missing the whole point. KG, R. Allen and P.P. did not win the championship by themselves.
Chenier Fan good to read your comment as well especially about A.B. and R.F. Main problem with A.B is has no killer instinct. If he did AJ would be the 6th man.
Grifon Racing good to here from you.

Grifon Racing I meant to say if not John Wall there is also the man-child form Ga. Tech name Derrick Favors. He is a Dwight Howard type who is a natural PF with more all around game especially offensively when Dwight came out.
John Wall and Derrick Favors i predict will be the top 2 picks coming out.
I really feel we may have to trade CB to get a Amare or Bosh for next season. If we don’t get Wall I would try to get Bayless from Portland as well.

dmac,

That is a great point about Andray. He does seem to lack the mean streak needed to have the killer instinct. He needs to play with power underneath and at the post.

You know who else lacks that mean streeak – Nick. You need a mean streak to take (and make) those late-game killing shots. Gil has that mean streak, so does Caron and (the Duke of) Earl.

Everybody thinks Roger Federer is some easy-going nice guy – baloney. He has no qualms about beating someone 6-0, 6-0. That what it takes to win.
