Game Day Los Angeles
SportzWiz checking in….The Wizards will kick off their four game road swing tonight when they take on the Clippers at 10:30pm. Dave Johnson will be hopping on here shortly, but until then you can get ready for tonight’s game by checking out the Game Preview and injury reportfor tonight’s matchup.
UPDATE: SportzWiz checking in…Just talked to Dave out on the West Coast and he had a few notes.
First off the team left at 11am yesterday and upon landing went right to the practice court which is not the norm. Sounds like they were eager to get back out on the court after Saturday.
A few injury updates as well. First Caron Butler went through practice yesterday after turning his ankle on Saturday, also Javaris Crittenton went through practice yesterday for the first time since training camp.
11:32 AM EST….Dave Johnson…just back from a Beverly Hills breakfast–love being able to say that—but ready to start making up ground. This team needs to stay confident. Four losses by a total of 9 points can make you start to wonder but there have been encouraging signs. Caron Butler is more in rhythm and Gilbert Arenas is putting together terrific games with the exception of the late free throws. In those close losses we tend to focus on the end of games but the Wizards need to avoid defensive lapses as much as missed free throws. It was frustrating to watch Rajon Rondo get that easy dunk late in the Celtics game or some of those late buckets by Tyler Hansbrough.…….BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 10:30 PM—–WE ARE LATE NIGHT—with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.
9:41 PM EST….Dave and Glenn checking in from Staples Center…DeShawn Stevenson will once again be in the starting lineup.
10:03 PM EST…starters are in…Arenas and Stevenson at guard…Butler and Jamison the forwards with Haywood at center…Clippers will have Baron Davis and Eric Gordon in the back court..Chris Kaman is the center…with Marcus Camby and Al Thornton as forwards.

I’ve been really disappointed with the Wizards the past couple weeks….and it’s not Flip Saunders, it’s the players fault…..I mean we should not have lost to the Pacers the other night! Something needs to get done soon! Well the good news is I will be at the 76ers game next week! Who else is going to that? I will be in section 108 or 109, I have to check!

I’m with David Aldridge (nba.com):
“Gilbert, on the foul line, late. Okay, you’re getting $110 mil. Make your free throws. “

10.30 pm, well…can’t watch the whole thing, but I’ll have to get up for the 4th Q anyways to get ready for work, so I’ll watch the end of the game (game ends here at 7am)
We gotta take the clippers. As usual, give JaVale some minutes!
GO WIZARDS!

I know Gil will get through this freethrow funk thats not even the main problem. What concerns me is the turnovers from the BigThree and the frequency of the turnovers especially when we just get a lead and starting to build momentum. Momentum can only be maintained with defense, rebounds, stops and no turnovers and made shots by us! We are constanly shooting ourselves in the foot and its a shame we do that! We must change our mindset like Lebron who goes into the game with a winners outlook and if his teammates are struggling then he will take the game over himself! 44 points and counting
be the King last night and his team didn’t look very good offensively or defensively.

i watched the clippers vs spurs game last night, and i see no reason why the wizards shouldn’t win this game.
a couple of things i saw last night:
baron davis is still a great player, but make him shoot contested jumpers
put a good defender (deshawn, dmac, nick) on eric gordon, a guy who will stick to him, and he won’t have a good night
rebound against this team, if the wiz get as many defensive rebounds as possible, they should win, just make the clippers one and done on the offensive end
someone off the bench scoring could be the deciding factor. last night ginobli just dismantled the clippers in the first half, hitting three after three. mabye nick, boykins, or dray can hit some shots.
but this should be a win for the wizards, let’s just hope the defense is better than it was against the pacers. offensively, the wizards need to move the ball, that includes boykins who seemed to be glued to the ball at times against the pacers, because ball movement always leads to open shots against the clippers.

Just checking out the records, because nba.com says the knicks are talking playoffs….While the 8th seed has a record of 11-15, we are at 7-14. If we can right the ship and make a run, we’re right back in the thick of things (we have five extra games that we can use to our advantage)

Goal for the Road Trip:
1. Play together and pass the ball if the Big 3 are not on.
2. Play like its the Finals from beginning to end. First min of the first game until the last min of the last game.
3. Dont get in holes of 10pts or more. We have the fire power to get out, but letting other teams get that kind of believe that they can beat us is hurting us in close games down to the wire.
4. Finish strong….Under 14 turnovers per game….And make those free throws. If we can make them and be agressive and rebound we can beat anyone!! We have lost 4 str8…by a total of 9 pts. And what team is at the top of the Rankings: Celtics…we should have won that one. Who else have we beaten: the Cavs in the top of the Rankings.
Wake up Wizards!!
Bring em’ out Bring em’ out!(Remember those days?)
Go Arenas and Wizards!! Time to wake up and Win!!

OK This is MYke From Columbia MD.
This is rediculous Nick young should be in the starting line up until Mike Comes back.
Secondly Saunders needs to stay constistant with his rotations!!!!!!!
thirdly We must give our younger players more Playing Time i.e. blatche mcguire and MCgee!!! Jesus we put Stevenson in for defense and honestly Nick young plays better D than him. Ive been watching the wizards since i was 12 and every year its the same type of energy regardless if we make the play offs. We just cant get over the HUMP. as good as gilbert is with one handed shots, i’m surprised he never tried to develop a floater
one good thing about the clippers is they don’t have a good shooting big man, even though if camby is feeling it he can hit shots (let’s hope that doesn’t happen, it happened enough to the wiz when he was with denver)
jamison will probably stay around the three point line tonight to start out, kaman and camby usually like being around the key.

Never on here anymore, but read it often. Seems that the DeShawn deal has more to do with us falling behind early and giving Nick a chance to be a sixth man and start shooting right away.
Nick has been playing defense with his feet lately and he is getting a lot better. It seems like it is a better deal to play him a bit later, save his fouls and let DeShawn expend energy trying to make scoring harder at the start.
BTW: For what it is worth, was at the last home game. After that time out, everyone in my section was yelling to pull DeShawn and put McGee in front of the net to block any pass coming in. People actually yelled things like, “McGee can spike it!” After the shot was made and the foul shots, people started yelling about how unfair everything was… and someone said, rather loudly, “When you don’t play the right people, you will lose.”
That ended that conversation.

Goal for the Road Trip:
++ Play together and pass the ball if the Big 3 are not on.
– Play like its the Finals from beginning to end. First min of the first game until the last min of the last game.
++ Dont get in holes of 10pts or more.

I think I am finally convinced that we need a decent point guard, someone that can manage the clock and control the ball. Someone that will refuse to give up the ball to someone that is going to shoot too early for no reason.
Someone on here mentioned that he felt like a trade was coming… maybe that is true.
Also, I wonder what McGee has done wrong to not even get a chance to play, especially when Kaman was going off…

He plays good on ball D… I love Crits upside… & from the moment we got him I thought it would be nice to see him develop like Rondo has. I “thought” that with our core, Crit would be able to develop while at the same time, we won games.
I’m not so sure about the “win games” part anymore?
But I’d like to play Crit at the point day in & day out when he gets healthy…

i just hope flip isn’t dumb enough to ever start boykins at point.
anyone with eyes, just watch when boykins gets the ball, and watch the shot clock. it will reach 14-10 seconds left before he finally makes a pass, or makes a move (usually a move) and he either shoots it, or makes a pass to someone around the three point line who then has to catch and shoot or go one on one. that type of offense will not win games.
at least with gil on the floor the ball moves around. people were getting shots at the rim, and open shots, and arenas dropped 9 dimes due to it. if haywood had been more alert, that could’ve been around 12 assists tonight. i’ll take the good ball movement and turnovers over a bad shot offense any day.

i wanna believe this team can win a championship. but when your role players get hurt or don’t contribute squat, you can’t expect your big 3 to carry you night in and night out. i’ll guarantee one, the other, or both of the following:
-someone WILL get hurt when mike miller and javaris crittenton are healthy
-we will lose to the new jersey nets
i guarantee it. seriously, i think firing eddie jordan was one of the biggest mistakes. why fire a guy who one, can’t control the injuries and two, is perhaps the biggest reason for turning around the franchise?
Comment from gray16
Time December 15, 2009 at 2:35 AM
yeah eddie jordan… he’s doing great over there in philly, really making me miss him lol
jamison is the biggest reason imo for the turnaround of the franchise. as soon as the wizards traded for him, he came in and did his part behind arenas and hughes, and helped lead this team to the playoffs. the rest is history.
Comment from TAG FLIP
Time December 15, 2009 at 2:53 AM
i agree gray16.. the first year we had eddie jordan as coach (2003-04) we were atrocious. granted, gilbert did miss a lot of games with the abdominal injury and stackhouse was out for all but a handful of games with a knee injury. but once we traded stackhouse, laettner, and the pick (devin harris) to get jamison, you saw our turnaround we had in getting to the eastern conference semis the very next season. sure, from 2006-2008 we lost 3 straight series to the cavs, but eddie really deserves credit for the turnaround of this franchise.

This is very disturbing. Coach Saunders can not have simply forgotten how to coach. The man strung together several 50 win seasons. While I don’t agree with the personnel he has on the floor some times, he’s probably searching for some combination that might click.
The gIl, AJ, CB, B-Wood, DSS combination is stagnant. Those days are gone. Even if they can get something going, they can’t sustain it.
Boykins played 14 minutes last night and had 1 assist. Nice ball distribution (NOT). I like the guy’s guts and agility, but he’s simply too small to see the floor and has to dribble around to get a view of things. Yes, initially everyone thought that we had picked up “Mr. 4th Quarter”, but it doesn’t take long for NBA coaches to remember how to stop him. Sorry, but, in the NBA, size does count.
There will be a house-cleaning very soon unless this turns around dramatically. We’re stuck with gIl, probably AJ also. But lots of teams would want Caron and B-Wood in the last year of his contract. When the house-cleaning comes and the dust settles, hopefully we’ll be playing a much younger group of players significant minutes going forward.
Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 15, 2009 at 9:37 AM
gIl, AJ and CB scored 68 points in over 100 minutes. They took 52 shots and made 23. They turned the ball over 14 times. Big numbers and a bigger loss.
It’s really time to trade CB and/or B-Wood (bundle in Mike James and DSS) for a real point guard and some potential. Play AJ off the bench and start McGee, Blatche and Slick along with gIl (shooting guard) and the new point guard. Let’s get some energy going.
Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 15, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Since our bench played so little last night, which one of our fabulous starting five put the defensive pinch on Eric Gordon and held him to 29 points? DDS or gIl?
Also, wouldn’t want to ignore the spectacular job that B-Wood did on Chris Kaman limiting him to 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Last night’s starting five never could play defense worth a lick, but they sure could outscore the opponents in the past…not any more.

Comment from gray16
Time December 15, 2009 at 1:37 PM
the thing that went wrong last night was the rebounding and turnovers. the wiz stopped getting the defensive rebounds, allowing second chances against the clippers, something you just cannot do. then on the other end, they started turning the ball over, but that eventually stopped. but the rebounding didn’t start recovering until the end.
blatche and haywood just did a horrible job on the boards in the second half, and chris kaman had a field day on haywood. if haywood isn’t going to rebound or defend, he’s a horrible player, as last night shows. blatche has been struggling lately as well, hopefully he turns it around.
gil, other than the turnover spree in the third, played a smart game, and facilitated the offense. he knew his shot wasn’t falling, so he got other’s involved, which i am all for. defensively, he held baron in check, making baron have to give it up anytime he stepped within the three point line.
now: i loved seeing caron step it up in the clutch, but i think he can play like that every night. he just doesn’t fit into the “rip hamiton” role. he’s not a guy to come off of screens, he likes playing with the ball in his hands.
so like i have said a million times, have him coming off the bench. and when he does, let him handle the ball, giving gil a break from it. gil and tawn play great togethor, and nick seems to do well with the role, so when miller returns go with arenas, nick, miller, tawn, haywood. then bring caron, blatche, and mcgee off the bench. draw up some plays for caron handling the ball, and let him take over, like we have seen him do before.
flip it’s obvious, your offense doesn’t fit the players, so change it for them. this isn’t the detroit pistons, this team is more like the minnesotta timberwolves. change your offense for THIS team, don’t make the team change for your offense. if he doesn’t realize this soon, i agree, get him out of d.c.

I don’t know what he was doing in Minnesota, but they had KG, who’s a once in a life-time player.
Anyhoot, I’m sure Flip IS a good coach, but maybe not a good builder of a team?

Gil might be right when he said ” We need to get away from this building” a change of venue may just be the right idea!
However I just have to thank Andray Blatche for being consistently, inconsistent because I bet a co-worker he would not get 10 points the next game and I was right! The whole premise of being a winner comes down to consistency and when four guys out of ten are doing there jobs then some of the stragglers need to pick it up or be released! The general manager has given players ample time to become consistent but nothing has materialized yet so a change has to be made at the top if nothing else can be made at the bottom! We want a winner and we need a winner right now! I hate to see Charles Barkley just ragging on us year after year after year!
