This game is the start of our comeback and I think we can win without Gil playing great and being aggressive but it would mean alot more if he did. I compare this game to the one we just had with Detroit. Before the Detroit game we lost at the buzzer to Toronto on a last shot miss by Gil and the team seemed to hang there head going into Detroit, and no one hung it lower than Gil. We just lost another game at the buzzer to the C’s on Gil’s missed FT’s. In the Toronto game I still felt ok because I was thinking that the old Gil may be returning but he let me down the next game.
I hope he doesnt do it again this time. The C’s game was maybe the closest all season that Ive seen him look to the old Gil or atleast since the NJ game in our 3rd game of the year. I loved the way he pushed the tempo and stayed aggressive. If we had won then I think he would be on the attack tonight and go for 30 easily but since we lost Im scared that he might hang his head again and lay back like he did against Detroit which will make the rest of the team follow. The fact is every good player has teams that they own and Gil always lights up the Pacers if he wants to. The question is will he want to tonight. I think alot of it is mental and he goes in the tank anytime something bad happeneds right now.
I also dont like the fact that Flip said he was really sore yesterday. Thats already setting up for him to ease off and its also setting up for Flip to do those dumb sub patterns were he sits Gil after 6min or whatever. The good thing is that Flip was encouraged for the 1st time by some of the things we did in that game and he preached to them about how much we need this win heading into the road trip so I think we should win even if Gil shuts it down, espically since they dont have Granger. However, if Gil comes to play then I think we will blow them out and we will go on a big run to where we soon enough will be to .500 and heading past it just like that

no danny granger, yeah this should definitely be a win tonight. i expect caron to have a pretty good night tonight, and i expect twan to do well as well. haywood is going to have to slow down hibbert, and arenas should have a good game.
the pacers are coming off of one of those nights where everything goes your way against the nets, and i’ve seen a lot of teams come off of back to backs like that and struggle in the next game, so let’s hope that happens tonight.

dray in the starting lineup sounds good but bad at the same time for me.
the wiz need a spark off the bench, i think dray is the best guy to give them that if all of the big three are starting.
then caron’s rebounding suffers when he moves to the sg spot. at least in eddie jordan/tapscott’s system it did, so mabye it wouldn’t in flip’s.
but at the same time, the lineup sounds like a good way to get started. there would be a lot of rebounding and people who can hit shots in that lineup. so while it sounds bad, it sounds good, and while it sounds good, it sounds bad. but i wouldn’t be against that idea at first.

i thought blatch looked really! good the other night against the C’s. but he needs to be that guy night in night out. we cant have him dissapearing on nights like this.
If our big three and starting core arnt going to quiet get it done, then success is going to come from performances like Blatch’s off the bench. Another who is capable is Randy Foye, he can light up, but he needs to get his mojo back. For the wiz to be competitive this year i think it will need to be our bench who delivers regulary on nightly basis

The good and the bad about starting Deshawn. The good is that this was the lineup that was the #1 seed 2 years ago, they are familiar with eachother, Deshawn brings the D, it finally gives us enough shots to go around for the big 3, espically Caron since we take out a scorer, and the best thing is that it forces Gil to be aggressive since he knows he has to score with Deshawn in.
The bad thing is that we took the lead with DS last game and then we lost it because Flip started running his curl plays that he runs for guys like Rip. You can do those plays with NY, MM, Foye, and Gil but they dont work with Deshawn. He just cant score and you dont really want him to have the ball in those spots even though he is a good passer. Maybe on O we can move Caron to the 2 and let Deshawn play the 3 so we can run those curls for Caron

Time December 12, 2009 at 8:06 PM
the thing with deshawn starting is, antawn, caron, and gil are averaging around 57 ppg togethor, while a lot, not like the wizards used to be. with a guy who can shoot/score in the lineup like nick, miller, foye, you get a guy who can help their scoring, but with deshawn you get defense.
so then it’s a matter of whether the whole unit does better defensively, or the whole team does worse offensively.
if they do better defensively and can still score, it really helps, if they do no better defensively (due to other players), but do worse offensively, it doesn’t turn out to be a good thing.
but someone should tell deshawn to keep going to the rim. throughout the years he has always looked better when he didn’t settle for jumpshots and went to the rim. if he can do that, that will help as well.

I feel like we’re always playing catch up during the second half. The Wizards need to learn to play the 2nd quarter… so we don’t have to do that. That’s why we’re not winning these games. It’s because we’re always trying to catch up… and we don’t have the time to. It’s not a good strategy and it doesn’t work.

flip should be able to see scoring isn’t going to win this game, defense is, so put some players in there that are going to show effort on the defensive end
it’s sad when i have the feeling gil is showing more effort on defense than most of the team
give dominic, nick, and javale in, the wizards need some energy out there on defense

no, it was the play of the subs getting the momentum, we put too much in to this big three bs, they make more turnovers that don’t get talked about, than I can stand.
They aren’t held accountable like the other players and its sickening. When they incorporate the other players into the mix properly, this team will be a lot better

Well, I chose this game to just analyze decisions and he waited too long to come in with the energy, then didn’t put the energy back into the game…yeah the three scored, but look at what they gave up, plus their turnovers…..
Can’t get mad at the same stuff every game, and stop blaming the refs for crying out loud, we could have taken them out of the game, if we would have left energy in, rather than trying to make heros out of certain players…..geeeeeeeeeeez, we are a lot better if the whole team gets incorporated….and i’m out…smh

gil needs to hit the boards more, tawn too
gil needs to move the ball more, and get some assists, he was just ball hogging out there, especially compared to boykins who just seemed to make every right pass
caron, smh at you, never come back into the game even when injured, no heart at all
the big three suck, let’s just bench them and go with a lineup of boykins, nick, dom, blatche, and javale, not like that won’t get more than 19 wins…

OBVIOUSLY, that doesn’t mean you win because you score, there are other factors involved…LOL….So if that means I have lost it, I would rather stay lost than be found in lala land over seeing players that can score, and that’s it. So you keep right on rooting to see a triple double, with a losing streak, instead of seeing a balanced team, with a winning record….if that’s the case, I guess you think Golden State and Phoenix will be in the western conf finals???
NO TEAM IN THE EAST WITH A WINNING RECORD has a 4 that can’t defend other 4s. NO OTHER TEAM has a brendan as they’re only big man on the floor for 75% of the time. NO OTHER TEAM WILL let javalle stay on the bench the way he alters shots.
If I was Javalle, I would have refused to go in, so I could get cut….so keep on blaming it on the refs, while we continuously lose games, because we can cheer on how many points AJ, CB, and Gil score, while overlooking their turnovers, non-rebounding and bad decisions in crucial points.
So once again I’ll stay lost, and hope they get it together, while the less informed, with limited knowledge of the game, keep rooting for an imaginary big three

I want the wiz to win, I have been a fan ever since Danny Ferry’s father was the GM, and even went to their house before….but when you don’t run your team properly, you shouldn’t expect to win.
So if I criticize the team, don’t challenge my love for the team, once again, if I don’t agree with you or any other person, don’t try to label me….if you can’t handle my opinions or any other person’s opinion, maybe you should run and hide under your bed also.

It’s a shame to have to lose one like that to their “6th man”. In any of the replays did “anyone see a foul”? Brendan’s hand was all over the ball and I saw no body contact. Silly me… I thought after the replay the refs would say sorry… no foul…. game over.
It was very nice to see Nick come in with us down so far and almost single handedly put us back in the game. Great minutes for him tonight (but not enough of them). Steals, 3’s, rebounds… he should have gotten more minutes. He should have gotten a few more of Deshawn’s.
I expect to see Mr. Boykins in a Wizards uniform again next season. I would be very disappointed if he wasn’t.
We are getting closer to becoming an all around team at least. Gilbert and Caron are starting to find their way. Antawn’s shooting touch came back tonight.
In a way I agree that JaVale should have been in Deshawn’s position on “that” possession and in a way I don’t. JaVale would have made even taking a shot hard…. if he didn’t foul. Who knows if the kid would have blocked it or fouled him. As it turns out… from my viewing of the replays… there was no foul (on Brendan), but, the refs called one and then upheld that call. Who is to say JaVale wouldn’t have been robbed too?

We should have never been in a position to lose this one. We block out and get the the hansbourgh missed foul shot, and Gil hits his shots, the game’s ours.
We must play defense (Gil), rebound the ball (other than Haywood) and hit the foul shots (everyone) or this season is history (in terms of anything but possibly a first round playoff exit).

Got in from the game not too long ago… I agree with Weswalk.. vs. the celtics – the keys to victory were offensive rebounds & making those free throws…. Tonight was really more of the same…. I cannot for the life of me understand WHY we are not making free throws – under pressure & not. This is really a waste of talent. We keep getting behind by double digits. We outscored the celtics the 2nd half of the game, yet lost b/c we were down by 14 @ the half… Same thing 2nite – down by 16 or 17 @ the half…. outscored them again… We actually have a BENCH this season – Young was on 2nite, Blatche, Boykins, Foye, McGee…. You damn near have another solid team! WHY do we look this way????
I think we are all just frustrated & just want to see our team play & perform at the level that matches their talent…

Even if I forget the bad call on gIl’s basket and the really bad call that led to the Pacers scoring the last two points of the game on foul shots, I can not forget that even though we had about a 10 minute timeout while the refs figured out a way to give the Pacers a chance to win the game, we then didn’t even have the correct NUMBER of players on the court as the Pacers were taking the ball out of bounds under their own basket. When we finally got AB and DSS in the game, DSS had no idea who he was supposed to guard so he ended up under the basket guarding someone at least 4″ taller when that was the ONLY place that the Pacers could throw the ball and get a shot off with .5 of a second on the clock.
I just watched the tape of the game. With .5 of a second on the clock the Pacers threw the ball to Dunleavy who jumped and caught the ball and THEN landed, set his feet and shot the ball. All this with a half of a second on the clock??? Who is running the clock for the Wiz? WAKE THE HECK UP! In any other arena that buzzer would have been going off as soon as Dunleavy touched the ball.
Okay. Now we’re behind by one and we have the ball with .1 of a second. We’re taking the ball out on our side of half court. We put McGee in the game. The refs are about to give Caron the ball to inbound, EXCEPT, the Wiz AGAIN have only three players on the court.
This was a coaching exhibition that would have embarassed even the LOTTERY COACH.

I totally blame Gilbert Arenas…
100 percent.
This is his team. He has the ball in his hands. He’s just not getting it done in crunch time. I mean, the last couple of games w/the foul shooting? That’s MENTAL. Bottom line is, that’s what Gil is right now, MENTAL.
I love the kid with all my heart but facts are facts…
He’s gotta get it together QUICK because this is now a habit & habits are hard to break. He’s gonna be the butt of a lot of jokes in this league if he doesn’t get his head screwed on straight.

There was one point in the 4th qtr where the Pacers went stone cold and the Wiz should have put them away at that point but made a flurry of turnovers to keep things close.
Wiz gave up 66 points in the first half and got out hustled the whole game. The Wiz had some questionable calls go against them but still should have won.
Flip should have called time out to get the right matchups on that out of bounds play
I don’t see the point of starting Deshawn over Nick or even Dominic.
I never saw Murphy shoot like that – ever. And Hansboro was a force.

Free throws……remember when Lebron whispered in the ear of a player, before he missed significant free throws…….IS HE STILL HEARING VOICES….LOL…I mean really,
This team is really getting or should I say, has gotten comical. OBVIOUSLY, this team has gotten as much mileage out of their current core players, as they are going to get, without mixing them in with the rest of the team…And no, it doesn’t mean keeping AJ, CB, and Gil on the court and changing, one or two players around them….OR it must be me, I must not understand the pre-requisites in their contracts…NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE ELSE DOES, we have to close with them on the floor (and that does not include subbing with a second on the clock)
I’m about to change my name to GETACHANGEQUICK…LOL….

It is not a good sign when your “Big Three” play their best game of the year and you still lose. There may be a message in that somewhere.
We can give it to Gil for missing those free throws but Antawn was 1-5. The Pacers were 28/30. What is scary about Gil’s free throws was he wasn’t even close.

That’s why it’s all in his head… Amazing how big a part the mind plays in this game.
Gil has always been an outstanding Free-throw shooter (especially in the 4th qtr) & now all of a sudden he’s Bruce Bowen?
All in his head. He’s not quite as head strong as I’d previously given him credit for.
he’s a mess right now… Thinks WAY too much about every facet of the game.
Gil, PLAY BASKETBALL.
At some point coach should be able to roll the ball out there & ask the guys to get a damn win!

The team is not a total train wreck, but i’m just not convinced we should keep putting up the house on just those three players. The most draining part is that we have suggested 1001 changes and we keep seeing the same players doing the same things(what is the coach watching). If the bench players can come in with savvy, what’s the problem with the starters.
I’m sorry, but the triple doubles and all that is impressive for individual stats, but it’s more of an accomplishment to sacrifice for the team and win. (i.e. boston’s box score has everyone scoring in the teens, and they have what? 3/4 losses)

I wanted not to blog or call during the post-game, I wanted to address something on the blog. What’s makes a good debate? The argument of course, with that being said…..dcbutler357..my family….love your point of view, as for AJ and his comments about some being stupid, we have way to much class here for name calling, we can agree to disagree however that does not mean that as a whole we do not LOVE the team. I think part of that love is too be critical of them if we continue to see things like, rotations, in game decisions, game management, FT shooting (etc).
So I could say alot about this game but the final score and our record this year speaks volume enough. Boykins great game, and we got some solid contributions. For us to become ELITE we must develop our bench, not worry about a set rotation. And maybe some games just shake things up, there is too much talent on this roster for the Wizards not to have a winning record even with injuries.

AJ never said anyone was stupid he said that people bash the players after every loss and it made him not want to blog.. Gray pointed out that he seen what he was talking about.. it dose get old but its your voice not mine i think its a team trying to find its self you say they don’t play the young guys and the bench that much… i see it as the young guys are high flying ESPN shows but its not about flash and dunks its about getting the job done right now no one is getting it done tonight we did so why should you complain about a well played game with some mistakes and in the end we almost had it but never the less we lost..
BTW when is class bashing the team its coach and its players just because you don’t see it the way the coach dose..
further more i was on the blog after the C’s game and posted did you guys hear about Haywood not taking a 33mill deal to re up with us and you and dcbutler were down right rude by saying “good for him” and “i would be shocked if he did stay” so you have to give respect to get it..

WIZ4LIFE, some people are leaders, and some people are followers….
I still say that about Haywood. Because this organization has let good players go and become all-stars elsewhere, instead of getting someone in here and properly training them. AND YES AJ did say that comments were stupid, and that implies what???
Haywood has already said that he is tired of the egos, and then you turn around and keep sacrificing wins for an EGO???
WIZ4LIFE, you are the one that is focused on keep mentioning ESPN….but instead of focusing on the highlights, listen to the comments and you may FOLLOW what is wrong with the team. If Haywood is trying to get a ring, why would he stay on this team, when everything is deferred to three players. I’m not on here to yay yay, rah rah every move that’s made and keep saying we’ll get em next time. I’m on here to voice my opinion, and if it hurts someone feelings, I’m sorry. But someone needs to show tough love on this team, and tell them what’s up, becuz until it’s done, we’ll keep losing, wishing for a star
I don’t need to justify anything to anyone, but I will say, the redskins owner needs a good swift kick and I don’t know who it is on the wiz, but somebody needs to start cocking back the foot, if this season goes down the drain waiting for three individuals to win a championship….the comical part is that they couldn’t do it in 2006, what the heck makes you think they are going to do it now, when teams have gotten better….lol

WIZ4L, Some people are leaders, and some people are followers….
I still stand by Haywoods decision. Why shouldn’t he want more, he has proven that he can do his job. And he needs help down there, having to guard two or three people because some people continuosly need help. He has also said that he’s tired of the Egos and I see egos continuously being stroked and the team is suffering because of it. This org has a track record of letting good people go that do better elsewhere and if that’s his decision, that’s his decision and I TOTALLY understand it. We sign players that can not get us over the hump for big $$ and we’re mad at Haywood for not accepting the offer, why be mad at Haywood? He has a right to turn it down. Does that not make me a fan of the wiz??? I’ll do things my way and you can keep co-signing other peoples opinions.
As far as the team, I never said play the young players by themselves, I said mix the vets in with the young, I don’t think AJ, Caron, and Gil on the floor at the same time and changing the other players on the floor with them is the proper answer. They couldn’t get it done in 2006 by them being the main core, and they surely can’t get it done now (teams have gotten better and the fours on other teams have owned us)
As far as me being a fan, and wanting to see them win, you figure it out, Barkely said it best, and while Barkely dislikes the org, he was still right, moreso than wrong…and you keep mentioning they are only ESPN highlights, so that’s your opinion, and that’s your feeling about the young guys, but I am tired of waiting for a wish to come true…those three playing together ain’t gonna cut it, and the record proves it, whether the are playing boston or the lil sisters of the poor.
Dan Snyder needs to turn over the reigns to someone else, as far as some of his decision making capabilities and I don’t know who/whom has the sayso for the wiz, but someone needs to induce some tough love and not spare the egos, for the sake of the team.
As far as the name-calling, I’m not addressing that, because I’m not going to take it personal, because if that’s how one handles adversity (by calling people names, that’s someone else’s problem). Besides AJ is a kid, he gets as many passes as he wants (for now
)

2 cents-worth on B-Wood: Brendan should try to make the best deal that he can for himself. This is a business and the team would not hesitate to make the best move on its on behalf so why shouldn’t he do the same?
Despite the fact that Brendan is having his best year so far, I would hope that the Wizards would NOT offer him too much. Brendan is now 30 years-old. He tires easily. He is a big guy with limited skills who works very hard on his game. However, Brendan is not the future of the Wizards at center, McGee is the future.

Would it surprise any of the bloggers that the 4th leading scorer on the team plays about 1/2 of the game and comes off the bench? He’s also the 3rd leading rebounder on the team; is tied for 3rd in assists (250% more than AJ who gets 13.5 more minutes per game); is 3rd in rebounding; and 2nd in blocked shots. ‘Dray really needs to get about 36 minutes per game for this team to be successful.

yeah well what did it prove we had not been to the playoffs in forever be4 that and we made it to the 2nd round that year.. what did it prove that when we were leading the east and had 3 all-stars and a coach in the east all-star game till Arenas got hurt later on that year

@Wiz4L-look it’s not about name calling, I respect everybody on the blog, and will continue to do that. Your opinion matters, as do everyone else here on the blog as a fan or a foe. I enjoy being here in this forum, and many of you know I also call the post-game. So as far as Haywood, I think he declined the offer to command the highest possible contract he can, which is smart. IMO he will not be here next year, because I do not see the Wizards matching what other teams may be willing to give Haywood and hes I know he is a UFA. So he will “ball out” this year and cash in this off-season.
Dray, McGee and Boykins need to play meaning minutes, Nick as well. Again let the young guys get in, learn from there mistakes, it will only make the TEAM better. The players all have the talent to play in the NBA, they all have elite skill level. So to get the best out of them, you must give them confidence so they can always play at the top. With some of our players, it really is the mental approach to the game. Truly thinking to much and not reacting and just playing ball.

Even though we have not played as well as we would have expected we still have to support our team. Some call it a curse (injuries) or just a lot of misfortune. Could it be that we are not as good as we use to be? Regardless somehow Flip and the team have got to find a way to get out of this rut. Even with Abe’s recent passing you would think that our greatest fan and supporter would spark something in the team. The season is till early so I am believing that Gil,AJ and Caron can reach down in their basketball souls and will this team on. It’s time for some good old fan blogging. It is time for a new team statistic: Loose balls recovered. My guess is that the Wiz have to be about the worst team in recovering balls loose on the floor. Those are like mini-turnovers. It drives me nuts seeing Brendan, or Caron or Antwan fail to grab loose balls and the other team get a layup out of it – big momentum changer.
Other random Thoughts:
-I hope Gil doesn’t come down with “Nick Anderson syndrome” .That is where a series of crucial missed free throws led to him losing confidence and going from an all-star to a mediocre player. Gil has to come back strong.
Time for Flip to make Antawn the sixth man – a role that was made for him. He should also cut his time down to 24 mins because I believe he runs out of gas and it effects his shooting touch (at the foul line in particular). The west coast swing is a good time to try this out. No one is paying attention to the team when they are so far away. The “Big Three” can put up points, but can’t get wins. More balance is needed
A second unit of Javalle, Dom, Antawn, Randy & (Duke of) Earl looks pretty good to me.

As far as Haywood is concerned the Wiz made a nice offer. He refused it. His choice. Now he must continue to have a career year and help turn this team around by example of his work ethic and commitment.
Hopefully if we can this season around and make the playoffs the Wiz will find a way to get him resigned.

I think confident/winning teams expect to win, so in crunch times they make plays that fulfill what they expect. Likewise, teams that are afraid they will lose choke at crucial times, fulfilling what was in their minds.
I think you can have a critical mass where 3-4 hustling players affect the others on the court and they do the same. I’m coming to believe we have a critical mass in the other direction and that we need another hustling/speedy player in the starting lineup. In other words, I’m beginning to think the big three shouldn’t be on the court at the same time.
Regarding Haywood and other signings, I am hoping that new ownership will result in less reluctance to spend money. We’ll see.

Gotabigboyoffense, I watch the games very closely. Just don’t care to much for Blatche. Yeah, he is hitting his jumpers probably at a very good percentage, but he does about equal bull crap that does not contribute to a win. I’d rather see McGee or Mcguire out there.

people might not agree with me on this, but if haywood does decide to leave, i won’t miss him that much
he has done well this season, and did decent the season before last, but other than that like wiz4life said brenda was a laughing stock
i think for the wiz to ever consistantly get good again, they need a center who can score the ball, and be a go to guy, and as long as brendan is a part of the team, the wizards aren’t going to look for that as much as they would without him.
one guy i would really like to see on this team is carl landry, but he is a restricted free agent this summer and he will probably stay in houston. so i think the wizards should definitely be looking into the draft board to see who can become a great center. of course javale with the right dedication and training could become a good center, but not a go to guy imo, he doesn’t have a good body for it. so mabye the loss of haywood will make this team go out for a good big guy in the future.

@tyrone20000 – I couldn’t disagree more, but everyone is entitled to his opinion.
