12 Days of Holiday Cheer/Remembering Abe

SportzWiz checking in…Another tough one for the Wiz last night, they were right there until the end, but just couldn’t come up with the W.

DAVE JOHNSON POSTGAME REPORT FROM LAST NIGHT

The team is off today, but will get back on the practice court tomorrow.

With it being an off day, I just wanted to write and let you know some things that were going on off the floor. As you might have seen on WW.Com or Wizardscare.com, the Wizards are in the midst of their 12 Days of Holiday Cheer with tonight being the fourth day as Mike James will host a Movie Night for Military Families.

For those that attended the game on Friday they were able to see part of the third day of Holiday Cheer as Gilbert Arenas had a meet-and-greet with Brent Johnson through the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. As someone that followed around Brent and his family it was truly a surreal night with Brent getting the opportunity to meet Gilbert and shoot baskets with members of the team. He also took part in the pre-game team meeting, the captains meeting at halfcourt, he was in the Wizards player line during pre-game intros and was even pulled into the middle of the Wizards’ pre-game cheer. I highly recommend checking out the photos and video of the event.

Lastly, I wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow Washington Sports and Entertainment and the Wizards will host ‘Remembering Abe’, an open public memorial for Wizards owner Abe Pollin, who passed away on November 24th at the age of 85. Some of the guess speakers for the free event will be NBA Commissioner David Stern, Bullets legends Wes Unseld and Earl Monroe, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, and current Wizard Antawn Jamison.

Here’s a great tidbit from NBA.com Steve Aschburner

RIP, Abe Pollin: Didn’t know much about the longtime and recently deceased owner of the Washington Wizards but I was reminded in his obits of several reasons to admire him. There was his willingness to build not one but two great facilities for his team through the years, when most others scrounge for public funding. There was his staredown with Michael Jordan, thus avoiding Jordan’s less-than-Jerry-West-like results as a team executive. And there was the memory of the 1998-99 lockout, when Jordan rudely suggested that Pollin sell his franchise if he couldn’t afford new millennium NBA prices. That’s the negotiating session where snot-nosed Stephon Marbury dissed Pollin, already a league elder statesman, by saying, “Look at the old dude,” during the back-and-forth with Jordan.

Yeah, well, look at that young dude now … on YouTube rather than on any NBA roster.

Bayless from Portland is available. I think he could really help us.

If we could get a frontcourt player to come in and help us defensively like Earl B. has come in to help us offensively we could find a way to shut the other teams down. We still don’t have an enforcer.
My wish list has a guy name Patrick Patterson from Kentucky on it. Reminds me of a young Buck Williams.
He could help us. Brendan needs some help. Andre and Javale have not been the answer defensively.

I am talking about next year. I know we can’t get him out of college yet. The lack of defensive effort will make you feel this way. Does anybody think Greg Monroe will be a future all star?

Seeing as I don’t watch college ball, do any of you guys think that any of them will be stars next draft?

DMac,

Remember Isiah did some weird stuff and got the guy from Kentucky at the end of the college b-ball year? I don’t recall the exact time-frame, but it wasn’t during the draft and the player was still in college.

Randolph Morris? There was something specific about his situation — don’t remember what.

Not that he can play… he’s w/ Atlanta or else was waived by them.

He had previously entered the draft but went undrafted. Somehow he was able to get re-instated by NCAA but it still made him ineligible to enter another draft so he was technically a free agent and able to be signed by a team at any point in time.
