Game Day Raptors
7:10 AM EDT..Dave Johnson checking in and hopeful the Wizards will continue their push to a .500 record and we can start this season all over again. Backbone of the Wizards streak of four wins in five games has been defense–especially in the fourth quarter. This week the Wizards held the Raptors and Bucks to below 40% shooting in the fourth quarter. Brendan Haywood has been a big part of that. Haywood limited Andrew Bogut on Wednesday and Chris Bosh only had 2 points against the Wizards on Tuesday….I love all the blog comments on our “off” day…got a kick out of Tom noting that jerseys are issued and not Superman capes when the Wizards sign a player but Earl Boykins certainly makes you wonder. Boykins is not some novelty…he is a veteran player who can play and I think now we are seeing the Wizards getting used to how he plays and playing off him. Can I use the word play any more. Wizards play Toronto tonight…protect the home court…BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 7:00 PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.
5:10 PM….Dave and Glenn checking in….this is a home game the Wizards need to have but the Raptors have had players and coaches meeting and are not happy about their losing streak and giving up 146 points to the Hawks. In short they will be locked in….the Wizards need to have energy from the start
6:50 PM…starters are in….Arenas and Young in back court… Haywood in the middle …Butler and Jamison the forwards….Raptors continue to go with Calderon and DeRozan at guards….Bargnani in the middle wih Bosh and Turkoglu at forwards.

yeah key for winning: haywood! Let’s hope he doesn’t get in foul trouble early, Chris Bosh will come out pretty agressive after the last game.
And Earl the Closer…go little guy!
If the big three play like last game, we’re good to go. Just move the ball, move without the ball and defend the three!
cheers

sooo…
Wizards Vs Raptors * 2nd Time VS them in a week=
Agent Zero * Points + (JGarcia’s Birthday *2) =
Hibatchi scores 44 points
see that would be the icing on the cake!!….
Its quite simple actually…
all you have to do is remember to carry the 1……

Wizards are finally playing well and starting to gel. Gil seems to have found that space where he is most efficient. the space between forcing the issue and losing games, and only taking 9 or 10 shots and losing games. 20-25 points and 8-10 assist with a good fg% from gil and we are true contenders.
I have heard that we will go as gil goes, but we cant rest the load entirely on him. Boykins has made his case for the wiz mvp this year, as has jamison and haywood. and we still are only 7-10. we will go as far as the TEAM will take us. CB3, Gil, twaan, slick, mighty mouse, dray, haywood, and everyone else as a whole. GIL cant do it himself. looking for a great game from haywwod this game. statistically he is right up in the top 10 in bigs for all the things you look for in a big man. rebounds, blocks, and shooting percentage.

This game will show if we and contenders or pretenders because we a at home and our opponent wants to break our Will To Win. I expect a War Tonight so Tough Juice we need you to be a warrior. Andray you have been way below the radar lately so I expect a Big Game from you also. The Keys to the game is Rebounds, Freethrows and Fastbreaks. We must stop there picks and there threepoint shooting which I expect them to shoot 30 or more! Lockdown defense from Stevenson,D-Mac, and Oberto will be needed. I hope Mcgee and Foye are ready to contribute to the cause because you will play a important part in the process!

Hey guys in tonights game we might be able to break 3 milestones. Gilbert needs one more assist to have 2500, Caron needs 2 assists to have 1500, Haywood needs 3 blocks to break 800 blocks.

Well, Gil needs to look to pass when three people jump out on him. And honestly, that’s not a foul that you call in the last seconds of a game. If we play to our potential, the refs wouldnt even be a factor in the game, at the end of a game. Can’t blame flip for the “on the floor” decisions.

Well, while we did not execute, the coaching staff can not continue to watch players go one on one, when it’s not necessary. We have qualified players on the bench. Why do we stick with the players that may play a part in whether we win/lose, but are not the determining factor in itself. Until EVERYONE is held accountable for a whole game, we will see this all season. Win or lose.
Even if we do make the playoffs, we dang sure won’t get that far with this mentality. Disciplined teams will eat us alive.

One step forward, one step back.
Toronto played pretty well.
Butler just has to learn to catch and shoot.
Arenas just has to learn not to shoot from the perimeter with none of his teammates in position to rebound.
Somebody just has to teach our guys to shoot FT’s. I don’t know what the problem is. Doesn’t look like the form is so bad. But some coaches always have teams with a high FT percentage, regardless of the players on their team, so it must be a coachable skill.

Time December 4, 2009 at 11:39 PM
Well I will ask, in a one possesion game with a tie score, and we are defending the rim, your line up is:
Arenas
Boykins
Butler
Haywood
Jamison
Flip??????Please address this? As far as rotations, last year we went through this crap, nothing is set in stone. You have guys that play well, and may get a DNP or 4 minutes in the next game.
Dray outplayed Twan tonight, yet you reward Twan with more minutes? Young got into a flow yet never got back into the game? And the experiment with Arenas playing point guard must come to an end TONIGHT, we have 18 assists in an OT game.
You must start Boykins, Period! And when we play the Raptors again Coach, please do not put Haywood on Bosh, we got away with it in the last game, but we saw the real deal this game!
Coach why did you not play your stoppers in an OT game at home that was tied? No McGeem DSteve, or DMAC?
Yet we allow Twan to continue to jack 3′s????????
Comment from dcbutler357
Time December 4, 2009 at 11:45 PM
As an all-star player, you should recognize when you don’t have your jumper and take it to the rim. Even if he didn’t say that to himself, someone on the bench dang sure should have told him that. As before, Boykins has helped us to overcome deficiencies in our play, but tonight, and definitely against higher echelon teams we are toast.

Is there anyone out there now who disagrees with me that Jamison should be the 6th man? That is no knock on Antawn, that is hust the type of game he has. I’d start Andray, Javelle or even Dom just to add more defense and athleticism. I’ll say it again… the only time Antawn has been on a team that had over 42 wins is when he was the sixth man. Barnini is in the same mold, but his coach did the right thing & played offense/defense with him.
It was painful to watch Antawn heave the 3′s. He really does not have that kind of range. He’ll have his moments but the 3-ball is not his shot.
The Wiz got pounded in the opening minutes because they had no defensive presence.
The Wiz will only be a 45 win team at best unless they get bigger and more athletic. The Wiz lost becuase of all the offensive rebounds the Raptors got. Still, if (Duke of) Earl makes that 3 point shot to push the lead to 9 that might have been it.
The only good thing about tonight’s game is it looked like Gil is starting to warm up the hibachi.
Flip needs to make some changes in the line-up. There is still a lot of standing around on offense on many possessions.
Better luck next time.

I like the Coach Saunders philosophy of basketball…stick with the guys who are getting the job done.
I like the fact that Coach Saunders has a lot of offensive sets in that big playbook.
Now, if only Coach Saunders’s coaching actions during a game matched his philosophy, I’d really like it.
We had a 53 minute game. CB, AJ, BH and gIl played the bulk of those minutes and shot a resounding 21/60 from the field and 7/21 from 3-point land. They had a grand total of 10 assists among the four of them. I don’t call that going with what is working!
The offense consists of a point guard dribbling around while waiting for someone to negotiate a series of picks to get free…and then the point guard will usually get the ball to him too late so that guy now has to dribble around…GOOD GRIEF!!! No wonder it’s still take the first open shot we get. We probably won’t get a better shot. How about looking at some of the other pages in that playbook!
Even though we had won 4 of our last 5 going into tonight, we have looked terrible, except for some parts of the Heat game and when we frustrated LeBronze right out of his game. Opps, almost forgot the Nets game when gIl and ‘Dray each scored 30 (‘Dray was 12/15 that game…
I don’t believe that he has had 10 shots in a game since).
We need to limit CB, AJ, BH and gIl to no more than 32 minutes a game. We need to avoid playing Foye more than a few minutes a game until he can demonstrate that he can contribute more than jacking up (and missing) jump shots. We need to take advantage of that tremendous bench depth by playing people in roles. Dom got some time tonight as a defensive stopper. Oberto and DSS could play that role at times also. McGee got some time and picked up 3 fouls and that was it for him for the night.
We need to get Slick serious minutes when it really counts. ‘Dray has to play at least 24 minutes a game.

If Brendan reads this blog…Big Guy you are inconsistent in your foul shooting because you are not releasing the ball as you are raising it above your head; you are waiting until your arms are fully extended and then you are forced to shoot with your hands instead of your legs. You are wasting the positive aspects of your entire routine of bringing your right elbow in to your body and extending straight up. Release the ball earlier.
Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 5, 2009 at 1:24 AM
As much as I was opposed to it initially, I am beginning to agree with ChenierFan that AJ should come off the bench. Not just because of tonight’s game, but because we really don’t need four “jack-it-up” players on the floor at the same time to start the game. ‘Dray should be starting and AJ should come off the bench. If that happens, we’ll play much better defense; the ball will move on offense; the opposition defense will have to move; we’ll get better shots, both AJ and ‘Dray will end up getting high double/doubles and AJ will provide some leadership to the second unit.
When Miller gets back, I’d like to see CB go to the bench, also (better yet, traded) and Miller play the three.

I’ve been watching other teams play…tonight it’s Miami vs. LAL…..These players (kobe and dwade) have their “selfish” moments, but i’m watching these guys hit open players whenever the other team even leans like they want to double team. Haslem (a good jump shooter) cut down the middle for a layup/slam and the play before, Oneal did the same (and caused Odom to get ejected…lol…which may cost the lakers the game).
Basically what I’m saying is, we would have 20 plus assists per game if the “three we call big for no reason” would stop being selfish ALL THE TIME and pass the ball when they are going to the middle and the opposing team totally collapses on them. I also say that to say, AB should be cutting to the basket more when he sets the pick, instead of running to the dang elbow. We can’t even get the basics of b-ball correct, which is why Boykins looks so good, he’s basically playing fundamental b-ball. If we can have someone come in and play basic basketball and look like an all-star, HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM. Like the one caller said, Why are we still talking “chemistry” after all this time. KG went to Boston and won a championship, after being traded during the draft and going to training camp…..IT’S TIME TO CALL A SPADE A SPADE, all of this “relax, why get excited, flip is a good coach, gil is working off the rust…etc etc etc” is getting old, the season is moving right along and at the end of the season, the only excuse is going to be, there was no discipline and/or accountability. All that other schizznick is just that….schizznick.
I would rather see Caron play with the second unit. He is more aggressive when he plays with them and he runs the floor better with them, because he doesn’t have to defer to AJ or Gil. AJ should be the 3 because I would rather him get burnt and have two bigs waiting behind him than the bigs using him for a layup.
WOW!!! KOBE JUST THREW UP A THREE AND BEAT MIAMI!!!
Okay, back to the story, FLIP has to make changes, for the good of the team, there is no more “big three”, this is a team, treat it as such. Those three should NEVER be on the floor together again, unless they are coming out of the tunnel, or going back into the tunnel or are standing next to each other in a timeout, or on team intros (get my point). I don’t expect much out of the skins, cuz I know Zorn is going to do something silly, just because. I’m about 45% there watching flip manage the wiz…..

@WizRadio
With the new instant replay rules it is my understanding they review plays in the last seconds to see if there was a foul on the last shot they may have missed.
That being the case, why did they not review to see that someone from Toronto was grabbing Blatche’s jersey.

Gil may have missed that last shot but the 3 in OT and the 2 to tie the game to force OT are the 2 biggest shots he has made all year and brings us another step closer to Gil getting back to where he was. He is going to blow up for a 50 point game soon, I can feel it! just like when he made that 3 in OT and I had already gotten out of my seat and growled at the TV before the shot had even hit the net, causing my wife to tell me I’m gonna make the neighbors call the police if I don’t shut up. lol
If Gil not acting like a JACKA$$ dancing and looking for the camera cause he knows he is playing a game on ESPN means he doesn’t get superstar calls…….I am cool with that, just give him calls when he actually gets fouled. Such as when he drove down the lane and got knocked on his back by Bargani.
Did anybody see queen james on tv looking like a clown????? Then his teammates had the odasity to get mad @ Joakim Noah who was mouthing off @lebron from a seated position on the bench as lebron walked toward him…lol

We’re like 18 games in…
NO WAY in the world do we trade Butler!
I don’t care if Butler has a bad season, he’s not tradable…
NO WAY in the world does Tawn come off the bench!
I don’t care what Dray or whomever is doing, Tawn is our rock. He proved that immediately when he entered the line up again after injury. No way he’s a 6th man… He had a bad night shooting… I can live with that because I can live w/the fact that last time we played the Cavs he was a beast… & last time we played Toronto, etc, etc.
What short term memories man, eeeesh.
.
Now we all have every right to moan & groan (it’s what fans do) but slow down & breathe in a bag on all of these wholesale changes everyone seem ready to make.
You guys are all nuts…
All said with LOVE!

Buy Me Love
What’s up Yard, it’s ya boy B-Wood! I’ve got some good news and some bad news! The good news is that it seems like my Wizards are back on track. We’ve won 4 of our last 5 games and have another tough game tonight against Toronto! It definitely seems like everything is coming together for us at the right time. Antawn Jamison’s play during this stretch has been stellar, Earl Boykins is giving us a huge spark off the bench and Nick Young looks like he’s coming into his own! The bad news is that as good as things are going for us right now, they’re going just that bad for my man Tiger Woods!
As everybody knows, there’s been a media circus buzzing about what Tiger called his “transgressions.” And while I will acknowledge that what Tiger did was wrong and irresponsible, my biggest problem in this situation isn’t with Tiger, it’s with his wife, Elin Woods! They say you can’t put a price on love but someone obviously never told Elin that! After hearing of Tiger’s extramarital affairs, her first move wasn’t to go to her family for help; she went straight to the bank! If you haven’t heard, just days after this whole situation was brought to light, Elin had the couple’s prenuptial agreement restructured and immediately had $5 million dollars put inter her personal account – this just in order to stay in the marriage. Before this situation, she was supposed to get $20 million dollars if they divorced after a 10-year period. Now that’s been shortened to 7-years and she’ll get $55 million (and that’s after the $5 million has already been put into her account.) Some media sources are reporting that there are even clauses in the agreement that could take this deal up to $75 mil!
Call me “old fashion” but this sounds more like a business deal than a marriage to me. I know Elin was probably deeply hurt by Tiger’s actions but Tiger’s wallet isn’t the way to restore things in the Woods’ household! Another fact lost in all of this is that these affairs wouldn’t have even come to light if Elin hadn’t gotten all Jazmine Sullivan on Tiger and “busted the windows out his car!” This could’ve been settled nice and quietly behind closed doors. All I’m saying is that Elin better be glad she’s married to Tiger Woods instead of Chris Brown or this whole story could’ve been reported differently!
The group Backstreet had an old song called “Buy Me Love.” The premise of the song is that money can’t buy you love. I’m going to buy that old album and send it to Elin for Christmas! Whatever happened to the saying “stand by your man?” Like my man AI (Allen Iverson) said a long time ago, “Nobody is squeaky clean!” And if I was Tiger, the fact that it took mega-millions to keep Elin in this marriage would make me question her love for me, her motives and how committed she is to their family.
I know some people are going to say that I’m wrong and heartless but I just want everyone to know that there are two victims here. And even though they say you can’t put a price on love, we now know that the price is $75-80 million dollars!
Now Yard, I ain’t saying she’s a gold digger, but she ain’t messing with no broke “_ _ _ _ _!”
Hit me up Yard and let me know what you think!
I’m gone!

tough loss :/
I don’t blame it on gilbert though, he did the right thing. Well, who’s next? I’d really like to be .500 …
And javale didn’t gett to play after the 2 minutes he played and got the unlucky “fouls” against bosh? Come on Flip… you can’t deny his potential…
cheers

didn’t get to see the game, but it looks like gilbert did his thing out there. the highlights on sportscenter made him look like true agent zero. now it’s off to detroit, hopefully the wiz can get a win there.

Interesting that Flip had Gil at the 2 for quite a while with Boykins at the 1. Seemed to work pretty well.
I think if we’re going to be more than a “one and done” team McGee has to play enough to be seasoned by playoff time. We have to live with his mistakes at some time in order for him to develop. Might as well be now.

An annoying loss, to say the least. They came out intense and took a 22-7 lead. We outplayed them the rest of regulation, even though we couldn’t get our shots to go down.
Overall, we got 4 more shots on basket than they did and 11 more FT attempts. We outrebounded them, committed fewer turnovers, had twice as many steals, fouled less.
We just couldn’t overcome our terrible FG%. Especially, Antawn had an off night in almost every way. would have been a good night for Andray to play 35 minutes — we’d have likely won the game.
Oh well…

If shots don’t fall, it means less assists, our ball movement was that bad but yeah. Next game…. PISTONS. We lost to them last time with prince and hamilton missing so… we better win this time.

@gray16 sportcenter didn’t even show you the clutch 3 he made to tie the game @ the end of OT.
lebron got more face time on espn doing non-basketball related activities on the court than any other player from any other team got for actually playing basketball on the court.

Looked at one way we lost because we had an off night shooting. However, the Lakers and Spurs usually win anyway against second-rate teams when they have an off night shooting.
So, we’re still a work in progress – a .500 team at best until we improve still more on both ends.
My old B-team coach told us never to shoot from the perimeter with no one under to rebound. I presume that any system (Princeton, Saunders or whatever) has someone under to rebound for any play. Some of you guys that know more than I correct me if I’m wrong. And if I’m not, someone sent a Tweet to Arenas.

To be honest, I was dissapointed that Arenas didn’t take a three pointer on that lass posession. I really wanted him to do it.

From the pages of the Post and beat writer Michael Lee:
There were several reasons why the Washington Wizards had no business defeating the Toronto Raptors on Friday night.
They sleepwalked through the first period, falling behind by 15 points before realizing that they were in an actual competition. They shot 36.8 percent for the game, with starters Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood struggling to hit much of anything the whole night.
And, instead of attacking a team that has no interior defense presence, the Wizards settled for a season-high 29 three-point attempts, missing 19.
Click here for the entire story:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/04/AR2009120404737.html
“That was a typical regular season game of non-playoff teams,” Coach Flip Saunders said afterward, offering his most scathing criticism of his team this season. “I’m more disappointed in this game than any game we’ve had. Just because you’re about to get that next step and that next step usually means being more disciplined. Not being complacent, not be satisfied. We started the game like it was going to be one of those games.”
He said he contemplated going for the win but instead drove around Toronto’s Jarrett Jack for an open layup. “Just one of them dumb moves that I tried to do where I thought the defender was going to actually jump. Then he pulled the chair on me,” Arenas said. “I was going to try to use the contact to push me back to the rim, but he didn’t jump and I was off-balanced shooting the layup. I just tried to outthink him, but he [outthought] me.”

Outside of the veterans continuously making bad choices (selfish) during the game, Flip has to realize that the starting lineup has to change and that either Caron or AJ has to come off the bench. As usual, excuses. Sounds like the wiz need to invest in some mirrors, so some people can take a look at themselves(their play/coaching).
There was nothing wrong with what Gil did, he just missed the shot….looks like our two best players are BH and Boykins thus far…and don’t forget about Mike Miller.
When are the reporters going to write and say “your starting line-up SUCKS big-time” and “why are you not playing your energy guys more” and “why are you not playing the guys that get you back into the game, once your vets keep digging deep wholes for you to climb out of”, or “why do some get 30+ minutes for just making the teams even”.

I would almost guarantee that if CB would be coming off the bench, he would be shooting while he was still checking in at the scorer’s table. He’s bad enough with gIl, AJ, and B-Wood checking him off, he’d be impossible working with the second unit. My strong recommendation is to get him out of DC while he still has some real value to another team.
AJ is the right player to come off the bench. He would provide stability and fire-power to the second unit, but, more importantly, the starting unit with Blatche at the 4-spot would be a much stronger defensive team. As I’ve said before, we really don’t need 4 jack-it-up players starting and ‘Dray is a pass-first type of player who has really picked up his “D”.

Professional basketball is really a young man’s game. The great players are already playing great while they are in their early/mid twenties. They become terrific between 26-32 and then it is downhill (with some HoF exceptions). It is an explosive game that requires quickness more than anything else. The older they get, the less-quick they become.
It’s nice to have a loyalty to a player, but, the real loyalty is to the team. If the team can be improved by trading a player, the player should be traded.

LOL…@ Jacking it up, while still checking in…..It seems that Caron’s game is more for the open court than the half-court, unless he learns to catch and shoot. He has flourished when with the second unit IMO(he’s a gunner, but you have to have that type of confidence…but gotta play within the system)
“It’s nice to have a loyalty to a player, but, the real loyalty is to the team. If the team can be improved by trading a player, the player should be traded.”
Well hell, with that last statement, anybody could go at any given time. I would say tweak the lineups, get another decent point guard to back up Boykins (what’s up with JCRitt and the injury??) and we have one of the most lethal teams in the league with non-stop attacking. We are too accustomed to our starting lineup. Mix them in with the rest of the team and we have two starting lineups on one team.
Oh, keep Gil at the two, we really blew the game when Boykins was in the game and Gil played the point anyway…lol….DISCIPLINE!!!!

No one is irreplaceable. Given the right deal EG should trade anyone.
But, as I’ve said before, Jamison is the one with the best chance of going in a win-win trade. He should be worth more to a championship contender than he is to us. No one wants Arenas’s contract. Fagetaboutit. And Butler is worth as much to us as he is to anyone else IMO.

Hate to say this for you Blatche fans, just don’t like his game and in my opinion he is the odd man out. A quicker, high flying, more athletic type of bench player in his place would be more beneficial to this team. Tyrus Thomas or Josh Smith type. Does anyone know Blatche’s +/- while he is in the game. I would bet it is a -….I would put Mcgee in there instead of Blatche.

IT SEEMS WE HAVE BEEN COMING UP SHORT IN THE WIN COLUMN AGAIN DUE TO LIKE OF SMARTS OR A OVER ABUNDANCE OF MISTAKES. WE WERE A 10 OR LESS TURNOVER TEAM BEFORE NOW WE SEEM TO REALLY DON’T CARE ABOUT THE NO BRAINERS OF LATE. SO I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A SUGGESTION AND THAT IS IF YOU TURN THE BALL OVER STUPIDLY YOU SIT DOWN! THE THREE POINTERS HAS BECOME OUR SALVATION OF LATE BUT WE ARE ONLY MAKE 30% OR LESS OF THEM. CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS ALWAYS HAD A GREAT CENTER ATTACKING THE RIM FOR BASKETS OR A GUARD/FORWARD MAKING HIS MONEY ATTACKING THE RIM FOR BASKETS AND ONES! THE I LIKE WOULD HAVE A YOUNG UP AND COMING PLAYER WHO COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE. NICK YOUNG IS WISHY WASHY, FOYE CAN DO IF HE STAYS HEALTH AND THE SAME GOES FOR MIKE MILLER. SINCE OUR CHANCES ARE LIMITED IT’S TIME FOR PLAN B AND THATS MAKE A SIGNICANT TRADE FOR THE ONE AND ONLY KEVIN DURANT/COLLISON/LIVINGSTON FOR BLATCHE / YOUNG /JAMES. WE NEED A CHANGE OF MINDEST AND MECHANICS.
