Game Day Bucks
3:38 AM EDT…Dave Johnson back from Toronto… and now the Wizards need to build on last night’s 106-102 win over the Raptors…as Flip Saunders said of the victory….”“We have had a couple of these wins. We just have not capitalized on them. We know the formula to win. Defend, execute offensively and control tempo of the game.” So many things to like about last night’s game–except for the third quarter when the Wizards only scored 17 points…..In the fourth quarter the Wizards scored 34 points but it was their defense that was the difference. Brendan Haywood provided problems all night for Chris Bosh and in the fourth quarter Bosh only had 2 points…and Earl Boykins along with his 4 of the Wizards 8 assists in the quarter did a good job of frustrating the Raptors guards down the stretch. Of course Antawn Jamison was just a force and Gilbert Arenas had a terrific line with 22 points 9 assists and only one turnover and that was a traveling call. And yes Caron Butler had 19 points….sounds like the good old days with the big 3…On to the Bucks tonight…BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 7:00 PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.
6:30 PM Dave and Glenn checking in…starters are in…Arenas and Young in the back court..Haywood in the middle…Butler and Jamison starters….Bucks will go with Jennings and Bell in the back court –Michael Redd remains sidelined with left knee soreness….Delfino and Ilyasova are the forwards….and Bogut in the middle…

Good game last night. I have to give a shot out to Gilbert Arenas he had a good game with 22 points 9 assists and only one turnover and that was a traveling call. As they say we will go as Gilbert leads us. If controls those turnovers we will go far.
Did Brandon Jennings play aganist Earl Boykins last year??

Awesome win for the Wizards last night. I have unfortunately been so busy this year that it has been rare to see any game live.. I may have only seen three games live all season.
Last night’s defensive effort against Bosh was outstanding. All the pregame talk about how this could be Bosh’s best season to date was just that: TALK. Brendan did an outstanding job defending Bosh during the first quarter, as well as limiting him to only 4 second-half points. The “Big 3″ also had their best output since the 05-06 season with 71 points. We need more of that on a nightly basis in order to keep up with the elite teams in the Eastern conference.

I think we will see a little more Randy Foye and Deshawn Stevenson in tonight’s game.

If Jennings gets off to a hot start tonight, let’s hope Flip puts in either DeShawn or Dominic to contain him. Let’s not forget about Ilyasova.. he’s a legitimate 3-point power forward, much like Jamison is for us. Maybe we could get a little zone defense in to contain those big 3-point threats.

For all of us who thought Flip was crazy for saying he would like an 8 man rotation (I was one of them). I guess last night was proof. All the players not starting last night better perform to Flips standards or the PINE is in store for them. Man, 11 minutes was the most for the longest sub. Wow!

We are definitely playing better D. Just need the guys to be patient and buy into Saunders’s offensive system, like they never quite did for the Princeton O.
Well, Boykins has taken Foye’s place as the primary backup at the 1. The situation at the 2 is still up in the air, but it looks to me like Stevenson and Foye are in trouble. I would like to see McGuire tried as the backup to Young for a few games. He didn’t have a good camp or preseason but he seems to be playing well now.

Hey Guys,
Just wondering if anyone was able to find out the names of the songs when the Wizards come out of the tunnel for their warm ups. I know the first song has a lyric “take it to the hoop” no idea what the name of the song is though. Is there a list of songs used during the warm ups?

I loved Scott Skiles when he was a Bullet, he truly got the most out of his abilities. He was scrappy and played with passion and FIRE. It has carried over to his coaching and his teams, as all of them show those same qualities of the Coach.

Very encouraging win. We’re gradually getting some confidence. Winning teams are tough in crunch time. Losers tend to choke. We’re not quite there, but we’re closer.
Arenas is playing smarter, although he still occasionally shoots early in the possession with no one under to rebound.
Late in the games the Wiz sometimes get a little lazy and quit moving on offense. Except for Boykins, who has energy enough for 2 or 3.
I’m SO glad Slick has his confidence back.
I sure would like to see more of McGee. Have I said that before? Have any of the rest of you said that?

Dave,
That was me that shouted to you at the game tonight. Normally, I am in section 419 but they gave us tickets in 221 in the B row tonight. So I was real close to the floor tonight.
Anyway, what a game! I almost had heart failure but I love the win. The Wizards really need to work on their free throws – they seriously need to get another free throw coach.
Go Wizards! Let’s beat Toronto on Friday.

@JeffM, …LOL…Yeah I heard DCDON…LOL
WOW!! Hawks stuck it to Toronto
Play of the night…..Boykins CALLED Haywood out to set the pick, waited for him to get set, then did a pick and roll for the slam….would have had a second one if BH didn’t walk.
THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN BH and AB…AB sets a pick and runs to the elbows….He was the only big in the game, besides AJ…GOTTA STEP UP YOUR PLAY YOUNG MAN.
We won, but we are making these games tougher than they have to be. More elite teams will make us pay, get it worked out Flip, this is our month to take great strides (15 games this month, only five of the teams had winning records at the beginning of the month)
ANYBODY KNOW JCritts status?

We played spirited ball once again and even Hollywood Nick showed touches of greatness initially. However we are far from being a complete lockdown defensive team so we must try to help Jamison once again against Bosh on Friday because he just kills him one on one! I like to give todays game Ball To B. Haywood for being a Monstar with 14 rebounds which were Huge. Toronto is mad as hell so I expect a War Friday Night at the Phone Booth so fans get there early for all the excitement! I wonder what the status of fresh legs J-Crit, is he about to turn the corner health wise DJ or does he have a way to go? How is Mike James controlling his emotions on the bench will we see him anymore this year on the court! The players I hope turn things around soon are Mike Miller, Mcgee, R.Foye and J-Critt. Lets get ready to rummmmblllleee!

We had a three-point lead and the Bucks had the ball at half court of their basket. There are about 10 seconds on the clock. Jennings makes a three to tie the game. QUESTION – Why did we not foul Jennings when he had the ball at half court? Even if we had a foul to give (I think that we did), we could just foul again. He couldn’t tie the game with two foul shots.
Earl makes the first of two foul shots to put us up by 1 with 1.0 seconds on the clock. QUESTION – Why didn’t Earl miss the second shot intentionally? There’s no way the Bucks get the rebound and call time out with 1.0 seconds on the clock. Instead we gave the Bucks a shot at a three to win.
I don’t understand the logic of playing Earl, gIl and Randy at the same time. Randy is contributing absolutely ZERO on either offense or defense. At least DSS has come to realize that he is in the game for “D” only.
All in all, we are playing better each game. We’ll be there at playoff time.

Earl, the Monster, Boykins
(DCB… I love that.. Earl calls Brendan out… Brendan sets the pick… then off to the basket… Nice Pass Earl ! Earl almost single handedly won the game in the 4th. What a “closer”.
Even Tom is noticing Nick? Wow. He shot very well tonight, but, Nick is really growing as a bb player. His defense is turning from good to very good. He did have one more turnover than Gilbert did tonight, but, 2 of them weren’t his fault. Nick is even rebounding. Go Nick.
Brendan the Beast in the East. The rebounds… ok. The great defense we expect. Where the heck did all these blocks come from all of a sudden? New, and completely appreciated. aspect of his game
Toronto is going to be mad, but, we have the answer. It’s Brendan guarding Bosh. He shuts him down again…. we win.
GILBERT! Some more rust shook off tonight
The team is looking good now that Flip is getting to “know” everybody. This, as Neal said, is very encouraging

AB does what he is told to do. He is playing the 4 spot. That spot sets the pick and moves to the elbow for the shot…think AJ, not BH.

Nobody so far has mentioned Caron. A very short while ago a few were advocating trading him. How you feeling about him after the last few games? Caron is an all star for a reason. It is just taking him time to find out where he fits in with the “team concept”. The last few games tell me he (and Gilbert) are getting close to figuring it out.
Go Wizards… onward and upward

A few random thoughts…
1) Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl. The guy has been unstoppable. He is a remarkable player. I shake my head wondering how he does it.
2) Glad to see Dominic getting some minutes. He was a big part of the Toronto win.
3) Saddest story in the NBA is the NJ Nets. That team is largely small, unskilled and not very good shooters. I know the Nets did a lot of salary dumping but I’m sure they never thought they would be this bad.
4) Andray needs to finish off those passes with slams rather than delicate layups. The fans want slams! Also, it is time to shelve the behind the back dibbling. He got on Sportscenter when he faked out a guy playing like he had a hangover, but that move generally slows you down as you attack the basket. Use the crossover in front of you and keep you momentum going forward.
5) I feel Caron is gradually starting to come around.
6) Refs call the charge far too much.
7) I think word is out to give the Bucks the benefit of the calls to help Jennings become a star.

Getabig, AB was playing the five, AJ was playing the floor during that sequence. Him being the biggest one on the court, i’m sure he isn’t being told to run to the elbow on a pick and roll, there is no one to hit the boards and also that means everyone is shooting jumpers.

Getabig, I meant to say AJ was playing the four instead of ” the floor”…lol…
Regardless, with earl at the helm, if players cut, they will get the ball. The amazing thing is that earl is making something out of nothing out there, cuz the guys are still not moving “fluently”. Big props to “the Duke of Earl”. Everyone is playing well and since no one is perfect, KUDOS to the TEAM
![]()
(Even Flip gets a big Kudos, even though he has us taking alcoholic “shots” to pull through at the end)….lol…good thing there isn’t a such thing as a TUI (Typing under influence
)
Oh yeah, we didn’t mention Caron. He was very aggressive. Good thing they didn’t know how to play him, and that’s what he’s supposed to do (take advantage of mis-matches). Never the less, thank you CB3 for getting it together

This goes to show how much we need a distributor in the team – we have all the scorers we need. I wonder if Eg notices this…

Our defense definitely picked up…but i still don’t fancy the way we look on offense. there are too many one pass – then up goes the ball. what i do like is that we are attacking the rim and getting calls for that.

Another great win tonight. The Scott Skiles scene was quite comical, I must say.. him calling the technical on the official.
Good job in holding the field goal percentage below 50, but look at the discrepancy in number of field goals attempted: 95 to 70. You can’t win games every night like we did tonight on that type of shooting. Sometimes the field goal percentage numbers are deceiving..
But in all, great win!!

Gabbo — I think Boykins *tried* to foul Jennings; that’s how it looks on the video in any case.
Someone said I’m “coming around” on Nick — as I’ve repeated a zillion times, no one doubts his talent; when he plays well consistently, I’ll praise him for it. Last night he was good on all fronts but one: he had 5 turnovers.
Andray — if you play a guy at multiple positions, he’ll make those kind of positioning errors. Overall, in less than 20 minutes, he had a monster game — 5-5, 4 boards, a block, and 2 steals.
Don’t know what to say about FT shooting; miss them and an easy game becomes a squeaker.

Grifonracing — obviously Caron is a terrific player. What does that have to do with discussing a trade? Teams often trade good players.
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time December 3, 2009 at 10:08 AM
Tom… because the “good player” aspect wasn’t the reason for the trade talks
The trade talks centered primarily around him stinking up the show. The last few games his shooting percentage has gotten better and the turnovers have gone down. He is even starting to play the passing lanes as he used to.

I love CB3 when he is in warrior mode. The leadership he brings when in that mode is equal to the nastiness of a Ron Artest and we know he can be hardnosed and nasty on defense. The offensive side of CB3 has my legs shooting out trying to kick the plasma 52 inch when he dribbles the ball out of bounce instead of making that 17 footer we all know he can make or just a fancy dribbling right into double coverage for another turnover just when we fight to get the lead. CB3 has to transform himself from the mild mannered Clark Kent into the nasty ass Superman we all seen in the past! In my opinion he plays much better when he is fired up about something. Coach it your job to get under his skin and make him bring the Nasty OUT!
