Game Day Toronto

5:18 AM Dave Johnson checking in and ready for a better night…we know the response just wasn’t right in the game against the Bobcats…Wizards just did not come out with the right energy and that of course doesn’t mean being chaotic..but even while the Wizards offense was struggling there could have been  more intensity on defense because the Bobcats were not that sharp on offense in the first half…but we move on..it is  a busy week with four games in six days and Randy Foye noted yesterday that head coach Flip Saunders stressed the  importance of being both mentally and physically prepared to avoid a repeat of Saturday —tonight is the first of a back-to back and the Wizards have to be ready to play through on Wednesday as well….on Gilbert Arenas being aggressive enough….Saunders noted that his point guards have always been among his team’s top two scorers and he expects Gilbert to be the leader of this team on offense…but in talking to Saunders and also Antawn Jamison and in what we all are seeing..it is clear that Gilbert is still shaking off the rust of his time away….he is now played 15 games in a month after only playing in 13 games over two years….Saunders also noted Gilbert is  not confident right now but it is something every player goes through at times and that with patience and trust in the offense it will come..and on the offense keep it simple…Saunders:” just play the right away, playing under control, pick and rolls moving the basketball and playing how you have been playing since  ninth grade…BLOGCAST—radio and  blogging together—starts at 7:00  PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is  a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.

5:17 PM EST…Dave and Glenn checking in from Air Canada Centre….Raptors have really been struggling on defense…giving up 109 points-per-game which second worst in the NBA and the Raptors are allowing opponents to shoot 48 percent from the field.

6:37 PM….starters are in Wizards will have Arenas and Young  Haywood in the middle….Butler and Jamison……Raptors   will have Calderon DeRozan  Bargnani Bosh  and Turkoglu

Good morning Tom M. Thanks for the post regarding my suggested trade. Where’s the rub on that scenario, salary-wise.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 1, 2009 at 10:03 AM

Gabbo, check out the NBA Trade machine on ESPN.Com. It basically lets you know if any trade scenario is doable based on the contracts. (it is really fun to play around with)

I saw that you had H. Warrick in the deal…Currently the Bucks are unable to trade him.

Chris Bosh plays like a beast right now, we really gotta take care of him defensively! Let’s hope for another great game by Nick…and it’s gonna be interesting like always to see gil play…

Gonna watch the game tonight (if i don’t oversleep my alarm), see ya at gametime ;>

GO WIZARDS

Comment from NedScharpf
Time December 1, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Go Wiz. I was elated after Friday’s game and then horrified during and after Saturday’s game, but I agree with all posts, including Dave Johnsons – let’s just move on! I jsut hope Gil’s knee is OK. The rest will work itself out. Go Wiz!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 1, 2009 at 2:57 PM

GABBO — I think there’s about a 30% salary difference in that trade, and the limit (if I’m right) is 15%.

What makes you want Hakim Warrick, btw? Or, put another way, what problem are you trying to solve by adding HW (and/or Bogut for that matter)?

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 1, 2009 at 3:26 PM

@Tom Mandel – I like Warrick’s athleticism and enthusiasm. He runs; he hits the boards; he attacks the basket; he plays with a sort of reckless abandon that we don’t have on the Wiz…but need.

As big as he is, Bogut has the mobility that we are lacking in the post. He is strong, and he takes up some serious space under the basket.

Possibly more than that, however, is that I would like to break up the “it’s not fun, it’s a job”; “let’s get down to business”; “no laughing on this team (unless we are the ones laughing, of course)” gang of four (gIl, CB, AJ, BH) and get some life back into our game.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 1, 2009 at 3:32 PM

@SportzWiz – Why are the Bucks currently unable to trade Warrick?

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time December 1, 2009 at 3:40 PM

Coach Saunders seem calm, cool, and collected. He appears confident that gIl will turn it around, and as gIl goes, so go the Wizards. I hope that Coach is right. I’ll support the Wiz to the end, but I simply hate losing.

Comment from SportzWiz
Time December 1, 2009 at 3:57 PM

Gabbo he was signed this off-season as a free agent from anotehr team which means they cant trade him until December 15th.

Comment from llballa19

Chris Bosh is going to get his, I still expect a Wizards W!!!

Gil will come around sooner or later.

Comment from datonypony
Time December 1, 2009 at 4:26 PM

CHris Bosh is a beast, and bargani (Sp) will be tough for Jamison and Haywood to handle. However, we must keep our belief that Gilbert will turn his game around, he is still our star!

The Wizards really need to win the next four games in a row. Raptors, Bucks, Raptors and Pistons. Very win-able games.

I agree 100% with this statement Randy Foye said “I think that’s what we’re trying to find right now – who are we? We’re trying to find our identity. Are we a run-and-gun team? Or are we a team that plays half court defense and half court offense?”

Go Wiz! Find your way soon, before it is too late.

tryone 2000 this team is trying to find its way…

Flip told Gilbert this:

As I tell Gilbert his mentality should be to score first and then the assists and all those things happen. When you have the bell in your hands that much you have to be a facilatator and you start out by being aggressive And when they try to stop you that opens things up for everyone else..

Go Wiz

Comment from Tom Mandel

Gabbo — a guy I like better than Warrick w/ skills like you describe is Kris Humphries. He too, like HW, was signed as a RFA this Summer and can’t be in any deals for a little while longer — not that Dallas would be thinking of moving him.

Comment from scj190
Time December 1, 2009 at 7:52 PM

greetings everyone all the way from Australia! New month and a new opportunity. lets make this the month that things all start to go right for us like we all envisioned at the start of the year. Gil’s shot will start dropping, defences will have to get up closer on him, and this in turn will allow him to blow by defenders easier and score more at the bucket and the free throw line.
and a big pat on the back to nick young who has really been impressing me. keep that “Kobe” like swagger kid and put up some big numbers consistently.
Go wiz!

And let me say as Ronnie Thompson pointed out on CSN, “The struggle with Arenas is all mental”..And I totally agree it is not his knee or heath, this team was built around Arenas and his “swagger”!

He must become the player he was 2 years ago for this team to win, as he goes so go the Wizards.

if the wizards can continue to close the rebound gap, they should win this

but they shouldn’t rely on all those jumpers to fall all the time, more shots at the rim would be nice

I think some of the principles of the Princeton Offense should go back into the playbook, our offense really os not good at this point of the year. We are a jump shooting team yet to find an identity on offense or defense. We have players that produced well in that offense and we should take some of the elements and use it, maybe we can get some better ball movement and team assists?

12 important points for gil in the 4th. Haywood, I mean wow, shuts down Chris Bosh completely in the important clutch minutes. You could see that Bosh was clearly INTIMIDATED by Haywood. That clutch defense on Turkgolu was also great. Caron had some good hustle plays 4th quarter. Good job wizards!

hey a win will always make me forget how bad anyone did

all i can remember now is those hit shots by butler in the first half and the drive by butler at the end, without those the wizards wouldn’t have won

but gilbert with 22 and 9 (1 turnover), antawn with 30 and 12, and caron with 19 and 7, great game for the big three

Great game Dj, Glen, JeffM, GBKDC, Phemy, Gray16, Gilfanic, Wiz4l,datonypony, JasonC,Johnboy, maryellen…lol…okay I went overboard…lol

Also Getabig, Neal, TomM, cuz I know you’re putting your thoughts together…lol…

Okay, I didn’t see the first quarter, but from what I see, saving Gil for the fourth, moreso than playing a lot of minutes early helped, and the rotations were spot on, except for that lull in the third.

The team played spirited ball tonight against a tall and well rounded three ball shooting team. However tomorrrow nights game against Atlanta will have to be even more spirited because Atlanta has young fast studs at every position and a bench that forgets there on the second team and play almost as good as the starters. I hope Blatche , E.Boykins and Oberto come to play hard and phyiscal and ready to score because Atlanta made us look like butter on toast last game!
I like Boykins at the pointguard with Arenas at the 2 ,Butler at the 3 ,Captain at the 4 and Haywood at the 5 for some serious payback from last game. The freethrows and rebounds should be the tell of the tape for the win!

Brendan 7/10 from the field with 9 boards for 15 points was very nice, but his defense against Bosh was special. Give BH the game ball. Bosh got 18 in the 2nd quarter and 4 the rest of the game…pretty amazing.

AJ was AJ again. Thank goodness.

gIl was closer to the old Gil.

“The ball stops here” had a decent game. He actually passed the ball on more than one occassion; however, “the ball STILL stops here”. Send him home to Wisconsin.

The bench had a combined total of 50+ minutes. Way too much time for the starters.

The energy was much better. Tomorrow’s energy level will tell the tale.

Gil’s Knee?

So I was watching the game tonight when he didnt get the call and he got the tech. I said that was definatly a foul but if you watch the replay you can see that the ref is not giving Gil any calls because he wont elevate. Its been like that in alot of games. He should definatly be getting more calls but most of the times his layups are prayers. He jumps but is still releasing it from the ground because he cant get up. I feel sad for Gil. He’s a righty but that also means that you elevate off your left leg in most cases and thats his injuried leg. Even when he’s playing at a solid speed and attacks the rim, he doesnt get off the ground at all.

Im so 50/50 on the cause. I swear one minute I think its all mental and the next minute I think his knee is just not there, wether thats now or ever again. The reason why I think its mental is because he was playing with some hops in the Summer, some in the Preseason, and he got up mad high against the Mavs on a couple of drives on opening night. Still, that doesnt mean that it didnt break down some again. However, you can tell by the way he speaks and his body language that he’s also not going all out. I also think its the JVG factor. I remember listening to JVG call some games and he was saying how sometimes guys think they are playing really hard but they arent. Thats so true and its not really a knock on the player. Gil might truly think that he is jumping as high as he can but he’s really not. Sometimes you need someone to really point it out to you and tell Gil to just jump as high as he can sometimes to get over the fear.

Again, I still have tapes of him from a couple of years ago when he attacked 7footers and always got the call because he was at there height when it was contact. Now he’s at like there chest or stomach when there is contact. I remember him kneeing Bynum in the chest or stomach and making him fall to the ground when he attacked the rim. Now his knee is at the level of there knee when he jumps. That truly is the difference in like 10ppg, either from just making layups or getting to the line. Again though, it could truly be physical. Sometimes it looks like it is. Sometimes it looks like the right side of his body & leg has mad push but the left side or left leg is just dead. Also, some games he plays with no speed & engergy but there are games like tonight when he has solid speed, tempo, and engergy but still cant elevate. Thats when someitmes I think its physical because he’s playing with burst in other aspets but just not on jumping. Either way, lets just hope it gets better. I know Gil and he plays off confidence. Tonight was definatly a builder and I think he will try to go at Jennings on the home floor tomorrow

First… Nice win tonight. It was a good team effort headed by the 3/4″ inch vertical… Brendan Haywood. I sure wish that guy could jump.

Tomorrow night Mr. Jennings… Mr. 55 comes to town. Ok Nick.. you have really shown me something from you defensively. You slow Jennings down like you did Wade and you will have truely elevated yourself.

It was nice to see Gilbert shake off “some” rust tonight. A few more games and he will be Hibaching in China town again.

Slow BJ down tomorrow night and win. Nick? You up for it?

Go Wizards

Whew! a win — here’s hoping we have something in the tank for tonight, as we *really* need another one!

The Bucks are a tough team this year. Jennings is looking like the steal of the draft — he was projected in the top 3 through much of the Spring.
