Game Day Sixers
6:38 AM EDT……..Dave Johnson checking in…..Nick Young will start tonight for the injured Mike Miller….Young has performed well in recent practices and hopefully he will hit some shots and give the Wizards early energy. Falling behind early in games has been a problem all season. and I think that has had an impact on the Wizards ability to move the ball…It seems to me that when the Wizards get behind they play with anxiety and that leads more individual play which leads to bad shots…Caron Butler is a question mark..his right ankle has been bothering him….As for anything else…this team just needs to win and get some confidence in themselves and each other…..bottom line….you don’t want a team that is content and happy at 3-9….as Flip Saunders said if you didn’t care you wouldn’t get frustrated…..BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 8:30 PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.
6:15 PM..Dave and Glenn here at Verizon Center…and the show goes on but with sadness….Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin passed away today at the age of 85. He was determined and sincere. It is poignantly ironic that we lose Mr. Pollin in the Thanksgiving season because he never stopped being thankful and always gave. He saved downtown with Verizon Center but beyond that he cared about his community and inspired others to care and be involved.

BIG 3 NEEDS TO BE BROKEN UP
I’ve come to the conclusion that in order for the team to increase in assists, the Big 3 needs to be broken up. Here’s why:
While Arenas was gone, Jamison and Butler became closers for this team. What does this mean? It means they’re the last guys to get the ball before hoisting it up at the basket. These 2 guys don’t get assists, but instead get you points.
Caron was never a closer in the NBA but he was thrusted into this role here due to player injuries. Caron got rather comfortable with it knowing he’ll get to shoot 20 times a game and play a lot of minutes.
Now that Arenas is back and demanding minutes (Flip is playing him over 30 mpg), the team has 3 closers that will not care to pass the ball. Butler is unable to go back playing a reserve role – and because of it, he’s in direct conflict with what Arenas is trying to achieve. Butler is a co-captain of the team and his voice should carry weight like Antawn’s; however, the power struggle is obvious and Arenas doesn’t defer his power to Caron (maybe to Jamison, but definitely not Butler). And with Flip telling Arenas he needs to be a leader, it complicates the situation that much more.
Arenas is basically asking Caron to downgrade his game and Caron is barking back at him with a big question mark. At the end of the day, both guys need to pass more for the offense to flow better. Milwaukee’s Big 3 of Cassell/Allen/Robinson broke up the same way when 3 talented guys couldn’t co-exist. I sense the same ending for the Wizards Big 3.

AT SOME GENERAL COMMENTS MADE BY OTHERS
In no particular order or blogger of interest
1) Arenas for Wade in a trade? Sure, and I’ll sell you a formula that turns water into gold.
2) Systems win in the NBA, not players. It doesn’t matter how many “legit” centers the Wizards have or doesn’t have – if the system implemented by the coaching staff is bought in by the star players, the team will win. Jordan/Kobe and Laker Shaq bought into Tex Winter’s Triangle Offense and they have 10 championships between the two teams in the last 18 seasons. The Patriots players bought into the Belichickian system and they still win against any opponent even though a lot of positions don’t have the star player talent.
The systems run by Denver and so forth work just fine with that group. I think Nene is a legitimate center even though he’s built like a power forward. It doesn’t matter though – Karl’s design works for those guys no matter which guy plays those slots.
3) Starting lineups that promote Boykins and demote Jamison are not smart. As fans of the team, most are on the brink of desperation for a win and will do anything to change it up. I, for one, am slowly buying into Flip’s theory of patience and sticking with his beliefs. He’s not doing one thing this game and then something else for another. Look at how Phil Jackson operates during a game. He loves the idea of having the players FIGURE IT OUT on the court when things turn against them. This is how you build mental grit. The Wizards have none because the coaching staff continues to save them from disarry by calling timeouts.

FLIP NEEDS TO BE LESS STUBBORN ABOUT LINEUPS
If defense continues to be a problem, Flip needs to start Dom with Butler and Miller out. He has no choice. With the limited minutes Dom has played this year, he did give the Wizards everything Mike Miller does except the shooting/scoring.
Because Flip is an offense-minded coach, he believes he counters poor offense with having more shooters on the court. I completely disagree with his coaching on this regard. I like the idea that Nick is getting another chance, but this is not the right time to do so. The correct lineup for tonight should be:
Arenas
Foye
McGuire
Jamison
Haywood
with Boykins, Blatche, Young, and McGee subbing in. And if Foye is still shaky, bring in Stevenson.

Wizards__fusion I completely agree with your main point. Systems win games, provided the players buy into them. If everyone on the team buys into a good system, you will beat a team with superior talent but less cohesion.
And our guys haven’t bought in and/or haven’t fully learned Saunders’s system yet. And the big 3 may never get to that point. And if that’s the case, I’d rather break up the big 3 than get yet another coach.

wiz fusion, the only thing i disagree with you on is your lineup.
having foye and arenas out there is like having the exact same player out there at the same time. both are going to be looking for their shots and both are going to be handling the ball the whole time. i think with nick starting, you get a sg who doesn’t want to dominate the ball, just be put in situations to score. of course he likes iso’s because he’s deadly with them, but he’s not going to be bringing the ball up and running plays like foye will.
so i think foye and arenas shouldn’t be on the floor at the same time, until the fourth quarter. that’s when you put foye at the 1, and gil at the two. this way gilbert doesn’t have to control the ball and score off ball (which he seems better at doing). foye seems better at scoring with the ball than arenas, so having foye controlling the ball and arenas working without it would be great in fourth quarter situations.
as for dom starting, i brought this idea up about 5-10 games back when i said butler should come off the bench and dom start. people laughed at the idea, but now i think it seems more realistic, even though butler’s out with an injury. so i definitely think the best guy to guard iggy would be dominic.
but i want everyone to remember how this team beat philly in the preseason. they made iggy take all the shots. they shut down everyone else, made the ball go to iggy, and made him play one on one and sometimes one on two basketball. the wiz also had active hands and forced a lot of turnovers. these are the keys to the game for me.
it seems like every time the wizards force the ball into the superstars hands, then do a good job of defending them they win games. this is what happened in the mavs, philly preseason, and cavs (2nd half) game. so i say give iggy the ball, have either deshawn or dominic guarding him (mabye even nick at times for athleticism purposes) and make him beat us.

the wiz are 3-9 12 games into the season. we can not keep saying its early in the season. at some point they will have to start winning. the wiz are digging a whole for themselves right now and with every lost now its goin to be harder and harder to climb out of. the have the talent to do it, but we need players to get it together. i like the idea of starting Slick, but not without dom. this 6ers team is very fast and athletic. we will need dom out there to slow down AI. I also like Mcgee in this hopefully (if he gets in) he usually doesnt do well against the power bigs but he’s better against the smaller bigs. thiis will be a team he can challenge vertically instead of having to out muscle them.
with our offense struggling the it is, i cant understand how anyone can not agree with with getting nick in there. as if we are LOSING defense if we dont start foye? nick is not as bad a defender as gil or caron. sure slick makes mental mistakes, he is still young (no pon intended). but gil and caron will let there man just dribble right around them. not losing anything, but i would like to see slick and dom start. let caron come off the bench. Gil is not looking for him anyway cause he knows caron is going to shoot and try to out score him. so let caron come in off the bench with foye running the point and Dsteve at the 2.
im still with you wiz, but time is running out. yes its still early in the season if you plan on putting a spell on the other teams so they cant win anymore games or if you plan on going on one of those 20+ game winning streaks that the teams in the west do. other than that, its not early and we need to get it together now!

another thing worth noting is last year against philly dominic mcguire averaged his highest 9.3 ppg against philly. he also averaged 6.8 rpg, and 2 apg, while shooting .565%.
in one game he had 16 pts, 5 reb, 3 assists, on 6-11 shooting
in another he had 14 pts, 14 reb, 2 assists, 4-7 shooting
i say play dominic lol

Trade the big three:
I can really go for that. I know It’s early in the season to suggest trades but we are not winning so why not talk about something fun.
I suggest a four team trade between Washington, Toronto, Houston, and New York.
Washington gets Jose Calderon, Reggie Evens, Amir Johnson and Tracy McGrady.
Toronto get Gilbert Areans and Dom McGuire
Houston gets A. Jamison, Jordan Hill, and Milicic
New York get Caron Butler.
This would make our line up look like this.
Starters:
PG: Jose Calderon
SG: Tracy McGrady
SF: Mike Miller
PF: Andray Blatche
C: Brendan Haywood
Bench:
Earl Boykins
Randy Foye
Deshawn Stevenson
Nick Young
Fabricio Oberto
Mike James
Jararis Crittenton
JaVale McGee
Reggie Evens
Amir Johnson

Millie Mill: why would the Wizards want to get Tracey McGrady? Besides Yao Ming, those two players are probably the NBA’s highest paid players that NEVER play…..McGrady’s prime was about 3 or 4 years ago……he’s done in terms of being an explosive player…..plus, why would the Wizards give up Caron Butler? He has probably been the most consistent player on the Wizards since he has gotten here…..and lastly, why would the Knicks want Caron Butler? Doesn’t his contract expire in 2 or 3 years? The Knicks are looking to have cap space for this coming summer, not the summer 3 years from now

The Wizards don’t need to trade anybody……they just need to get out of this slump that they are in, and Flip Saunders needs to look at the bench more during the games if the starters are getting tired or if they are not producing good shots on offense!

Millie Mill: why would the Wizards want to get Tracey McGrady?
Tracy McGrady makes 22mil a year that would look really good this free agency period. Plus if he gets hurt again we still have Randy Foye and Nick Young. Being that we are starting Nick Young now we are not losing anything. We wouldn’t be looking for McGrady to be a star. We just need his expiring contract.
I have always liked Jose Calderon’s game. He has one of the best assist to turnover ratio in the game and you better not leave him open.
@ sharpsburg23
You maybe right. But with Gilbert as a Caption and our main floor leader, we are not going anywhere with that ego. If Gil can check his ego at the door I believe we can go far. But that’s a BIG IF. Gil has always had an ego IMO.

if the wizards were to pick up tracy mcgrady for anything above vet minimum, after stackhouse, hughes, arenas, and butler all having injuries that made this team suffer, they would be out of their minds.
about the arenas/butler situation, i personally like what arenas had to say in this link, starting with “Later on Monday, Butler later reached out to arenas”…
“I told him to just shoot. ‘I don’t care if you take 22 shots and only make six of them. Shoot and get comfortable,’ ” Arenas said. “I’m the only player that needs to sacrifice. For us to be successful, I told Caron, ‘I need you to be Caron.’ I need [Jamison] to average 20 [points] and 10 [rebounds], I need Caron to do his 20 [points], eight [rebounds] and four [assists]. I need Mike Miller, Randy Foye, Nick Young, Andray Blatche to shoot every time I get them the ball. Me? It’s a puzzle, and I’ll fill in the gaps. I’ll sacrifice [the three-time All-Star] that I was, and I’ll just be the gap filler. Me and [Haywood].”
of course there are a lot of I’s in there lol, but i like what he had to say

im halfway with you milli.. yes we have 3 all stars. yes we can get it together if everyone checks there ego. but where would we be then? where would we be IF this team gets it together? would we be championship contenders or a good playoff team? these are the real questions here. i think to many people here would be satified with a turn around to win 48 games went to the playoffs and stayed there till the second round. we have been there. We should be trying to get the wizards to the point where we are true championship contenders, not just a good team. After only winning 19 games last year, yeah, the playoffs seem like a reasonable goal. but we only won 19 games because of injuries. this is the same team that went to the playoffs 3 straight years. the SAME team. yes we have more pieces now, but those pieces are not championship pieces. they are better regular season record pieces.
why not make a trade that would boost this team to where we are in a position to win a title? that is actually something we should be looking at regardless if this team gets it together or not.
As far as Mcgrady, i think he is better than most fans think. he is one of the most explosive scorers to ever play. and he still has it. problem is hes always hurt. now u put him on the undisputed “most injury prone” team ever, I dont know if i like his odds for him to stay healthy with the wiz. I dont believe in curses or anything, but you cant help but get a bad feeling about it.

Millie, I would do that trade in a NY minute. I’d love to have that lineup with $22M coming off the payroll the next year.
Sure, it’s not a good trade if the big 3 were to gel. But I’ve lost confidence that that’s going to happen. I hope I’m wrong. It certainly is good to read what Arenas said in the above link. But can those guys break old habits?
Butler is a FA after next season. The more immediate concerns are the FA’s after this season: Haywood, Miller, Foye, Young, McGee, McGuire, Crittenton, James.

i think we all had such high expectations for this team out of the gate, that this horrible record seems even worse than it already is.
i think we should all have patience with this team, and give it a season to work itself out. the wizards should use this season to adapt to flip’s system, get everyone comfortable with it, and figure out what they have to do for the rest of this season, and next season. trust me i know it’s hard, but i think flip and the big three all deserve it.
the wiz have a new coach, a returning rusty star, and a new look, they need more time to gel that we anticipated. i think all the losses last season have us wanting a winning season back, but let’s all have patience. i’m talking to myself right now as well, because i’m losing mine as well lol.
so let’s just hope this team figures themselves out. i don’t expect them to make the playoffs right now, but i’m not counting them out of it yet either. but i do expect this team to slowly find themselves in this system, which can translate to a lot of success in the future. there’s no point imo, in starting from scratch with a new big three, without giving this team time to work things out.

ok, so after the smoke clears (i love the TMac angle because the trade involves microfracture for another microfracture), your trade machine scenario basically gives the Wiz just enough to get …
LEBRON JAMES
i think that’s what you’re advocating here. the thinking is fine, and the finances seem to work; but this is the Wizards fan’s version of a political suicide. or, you’re just a huge toronto raptors supporter and you hope that having arenas on that team will get bosh to stay in canada.
@ gray16
we’re definitely on the same page, like part of the 14 out of 15 bloggers that see eye-to-eye … i don’t think we have hidden agendas but someone does … i do have a hidden agenda, like what happened to all those contests this blog used to have? we don’t even get chances to win posters anymore.
if what arenas recently said did come true, the Wiz would be 10-2 instead of 3-9. that’s what everyone is hoping with this lineup and it aint happening. maybe guys like caron and gil are pressing a bit too much.
i’m giving the Wiz 5 desperation games to right the ship and tonight is desperation game number 1. both teams are in bad shape and both need a win. both have high expectations but are nowhere near where they should be in the eastern conference standings.

If that crazy trade was to happen the Wizards would try to get Lebron just like any team that has the cap room, but he is not the only big time free agent. http://www.sportscity.com/nba/2010-nba-free-agents
This will be our free agents at the end of the season.
T-Mac -$22,800,000
Amir Johnson – $3,900,000
Mike James- $6,400,000
J-Critt- $1,400,000
Randy Foye- $3,500,000
Haywood- $6,000,000
Mike Miller- $9,700,000
Oberto- $1,900,000
Earl Boykins- $752,000
Total- $56,352,000
I was jusy playing around with that trade. But to keep it real I’m not just happy with making it to the playoffs, and this team is not going to win it all.
I thought the team would win 50 games this season but now it is looking more like high 30’s at best.

with that, i offer my condolences to the pollin family. thanksgiving is a time where families come together to celebrate and enjoy each others’ company; not to deal with stuff like the passing of an area icon.
i hope the team understands how much mr. pollin means to the organization and how he fronted a lot of his own resources to see another championship parade go through the chocolate city. if it happens with this group, i know he’ll be smiling from above.

Jeffmalone, where did it say that Oberto is starting?
Anyways, Im glad to see NY get a shot but its probably the worst time ever for him to get one with him having to go against Iggy this game and Wade the next. Both of those guys usually kill him. I hope he’s aggressive and stays on his feet on D

What is up with all the dissension in the team? I feel like the team isn’t together… has the Haywood thing been cleared up? I don’t like it how people are having problems with Gilbert… he’s one of my favorite players. So… I’m disappointed with this.

At the half, a couple of things that stood out to me:
Wizards 10 assists and 7 TO’s
Twan leading the way with 13pts 6 reb 1 assist
Washing plus 2 in rebounds 26 for Wiz, 24 for the 76ers
McGee and Blatche both played under 10 minutes in the half……Bench outscored the 76ers 16-8
McGee 4 blks, 2 pts, 2 reb in 8 min
Dray 8 pts 5 reb 2 assists in 9 minutes
You think these 2 need more minutes?
Boykins 3 assists in 9 minutes O TO’s
Arenas 3 assists in 20 with 7 pts and 2 reb, 2 TO’s
Foye 6pts in 6 min
Young 7 pts, 3 reb, 1 assists, 1 TO in 16.5 minutes

Good things: Jamison efficient on rebounding and scoring. Nick doing good things. Blatche solid off the bench. Earl Boykins running the team well and nagging the opponents on defense. JAVALE BLOCKING 6 SHOCKS IN 14 MINUTES!
Now to the bad: Arenas shooting percentage still bad, 6 TO’s is also very bad, Oberto not justifying his minutes. You can say w/e you like about solid screens blah blah but 0 points 1 steal and 4 rebounds 1 assist jsut does not make sense in 21 minutes of play. And foye? Foye looked like more of a ball hog than caron did and did some real stupid s***

A good win tonight, it would have been awful not to win this one for Mr. Pollin.
A lot of people have dumped on him through the years, just like they are Dan Snyder now. But I tell you, Daniel Snyder needs to take a step back and see what a professional sports owner who really wants to become a valued member of the community beyond his team does. One of the callers on the show tonight talked about the work he had done in Southeast for the folks down there. In addition, if you think back to what Chinatown was like before he built the MCI Center there…about the only thing open was the Popeyes…that and boarded up storefronts, and compare that to now. He cared about the people in all parts of the city, and he put his money where his mouth was when it came to putting a stadium in the city.
I know it won’t happen, but if there was any way to name that building after him, its justified. Heck, maybe just the court since I’m sure they have contractual obligations to Verizon.
Lets see if the Bullets can string some wins together now.

Time November 24, 2009 at 11:12 PM
@Jeff, do you think we should have a standard starting line-up, or rotate it depending on the match-up, cause I feel the same way about having Oberto instead of Blatche or McGee. Flip is gonna have some tough decision when miller and caron come back.
Comment from jeffmalone1990
Time November 24, 2009 at 11:18 PM
@CB3I think no team should have a standard starting line up, you play the match ups and who gives you the best chance to win.
You cannot play an athletic team like the 76ers, Blazers or Hawks and have a flat footed or slow from court od Oberto and Haywood, IMO.

Crazy game. Yes, the Wiz won. But, they should have won by 20 going away, and they almost lost it. How can that be? The rotations that Coach Saunders used during some streches challenge the imagination. At one point we had three point guards in the game together. Yep, the Sixers closed the gap in that stretch.
Brendan always looks tired and weary beginning in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Tonight he frequently looked to the bench to see if someone was coming to relieve him. He played 34 minutes and was fairly ineffective in the second half. Oberto played 21:23 and did absolutely nothing of consequence. I’m tired of hearing that he does the “little things”. ‘Dray played 22 solid minutes, spread among the 2, 3 and 4 spots…nice versatility.. Can anyone tell me why McGee got only 14 minutes during which he blocked 6 shots, altered many more, and eventually forced the Sixers to abandon attacking the basket? Please give that kid a chace to play, make mistakes, learn from them, and contribute to the success of the team.
It’s a good thing that we were playing the SIxers. EJ rarely out-coaches anyone, but it almost happened tonight.

Forgot to mention that Slick was outstanding!!! He scored well, but more importantly, he defended very well and had 1 turnover during substantial playing minutes. It looked as though he was getting the feel for his game back. I hope he continues to get a chance to play extended minutes.

as with the game – for the first time this season, the substitution patterns were excellent. no one guy had to really exhaust himself for the entire game. i know gil pressed a bit at the end, but that’s part of the learning process. i think we just need to be a bit more patient after seeing what this team can do.
i loved how from the getgo, arenas tried to get nick young on point and let him go get in rhythm. after nick got some jumpers in, he’s ready for the rest of the night. what a good job on playing defense against iguodala. nick wasn’t desperate and he played in a controlled manner.
antawn is like a bottle of wine – he’s getting BETTER with age. just unbelievable how much poise he brings on the court. i love watching this guy play basketball.
all of a sudden, the calls the Wiz didn’t get were given tonight. a lot of blocking fouls were called on the 76ers.
it shouldn’t be a surprise that point guards in the eddie jordan system are going to shine. we learned that lou williams – a talent in his own right, can really take it to the next level. and most everyone at the VC knew he was going to try for the game winner because he had the hot hand.
lastly, i heard on the radio that mr. pollin was going to go to tonight’s game. how sad – because he trusted eddie jordan and gave him a great opportunity to make dc basketball relevant again. eddie did his job to the best of his ability, but just too many injuries undermined what bright future this team had in store for the owner when he was healthier.
as flip said in the postgame, it is time to celebrate what mr. pollin did and not focus on his passing. likewise with the wizards, hopefully the team is slowly getting back to playing better basketball. gil sacraficed his game for the first 43 minutes of the basketball game. and then he went with his old strategy which got him into turnover hell. luckily, other parts of the team clicked and was able to hold on and trade baskets for an unbelievable finish from philly.

the game ending produced a lot of happy home fans – so much so that one of the concession stands was giving away free pretzels (plain, salted, cinnamon – any variety) at the end of game — now that’s what i call a satisfying win!

First of all… God bless Abe.
Thank you for not turning the team over to Michael Jordan. That took guts to tell the sainted MJ to leave my team alone and go back to your craps table.
A few random thoughts…
It wasn’t pretty at the end but a win is a win. Who knew the Sixers would start raining 3’s?
Is Elton Brand playing anymore or is he semi-retired?
(Duke of) Earl is amazing. I can’t imagine how he not only survives but thrives.
Nick, with his wingspan and leaping ability, can be a pretty formidable defensive player when he plays straight-up defense. Congrats to Nick for an effective game following minimal time on the court all season long. Congrats to Gebbo for predicitng that Nick would be a starter after 10 games. Just missed nailing that prediction by 2 games. Nick might stay there all year long.
We need 20+ mins from Javalle a night.
We need Dom for 10 mins a night so he can be loose to play D at the end of the game instead of Antawn or DeShawn.
This team will turn it around.

@wizards_fusion-I agree with your comments EXCEPT for one thing:
as with the game – for the first time this season, the substitution patterns were excellent.
Can you explain this one to me?
And I will again ask the board and my fellow bloggers, defend Coach Saunders too me?

We won, so I’ll forgive Flip about 75% for this
But here’s my input: If there were 5 more seconds on the clock, we would have lost the game. We put in Gil, take out twan. We have foye in jacking up shots, not dishing off for assists when penetrating and NY doesn’t get back in until about 3 minutes are left. Javalle doesn’t get back in the game and Philly’s big men are running circles around him. There’s about 1 minute left in the game, and Gil lets his man go around him for a layup, and Gil is still standing at the free throw line….ALL THE WHILE BOYKINS IS TAKEN OUT NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN
This team has chemistry, the players, everything, even with two/three/four players injured. What this team doesn’t have is someone to tell Gil that he’s the most immature grown-up on this team, and that he needs to go sit down at the end of the bench with a passifier in his mouth, until he grows up, even if it’s never. So our system is to wait until Gil can find his super-hero cape? Gils job is to run the team and get the ball to the proper person, to help our team win. It ain’t about him “holding back” his game….who does he think he is, i am not about to redefine the game of b-ball to appease him, and SOMEONE in that organization needs to tell him that the NBA was here before him and will be here after him. We have sacrificed enough games this season for his “ego”, even if he aint happy and goes on a tantrum. We will continue to have problems as long as he acts infantile and thinks everything centers around him…..Guess what Gilbert Arenas, it DOESN’T…and if it means we do whatever for you to leave, because you don’t get it, so be it. This team proved tonight that it can win without you. It proved it against Cleveland, and could have proved it on some other nights, if it wasn’t about YOU and your ego. The light is starting to shine brighter on this team, and you can get in for the team picture or take a solo shot, but I for one am tired of the circus
Signed
Enough already

Jeff I know what you mean. Flip’s substitutions were spot on through three quarters. I have no idea what was in his head in the fourth. He finallly put Nick back in but no JaVale down the stretch was ridiculous. He wasn’t in foul trouble and was certainly dominating the game. If JaVale were in there in “crunch” time we wouldn’t have all lost a pound sweating the outcome

great win for a team in need of a morale boost. this game had a similar feeling of the first game after the redskins lost sean taylor in 2007.. very heavy hearts, even from the couch.
heavy hearts aside, this team has got to close out games.. nearly squandering a 14-point lead is inexcusable, whether your a team as bad as the nets or a team as good as the lakers. i’m not so much worried about the individual performances (young, mcgee) than i am with the total team effort. if you don’t play 48 full minutes of basketball, then you don’t win basketball games. we saw it in the redskins-cowboys game on sunday.. the redskins did not play football for 60 minutes.. what happened? dallas scores a touchdown and we lose 7-6. gotta play from start to finish.

The redskins are worse than the wizards.
1) the redskins have a “lame-duck” coach
2) the quarterback for the redskins is similar to Gil running the point. Neither seem to have a clue
3) Coach has 15 seconds left at the end of first half in dallas territory and tries field goal on 3rd down tries a field goal instead of trying to move closer
4) on 3rd down towards end of game, skins try a draw play instead of a short pass, which had been working all game
5) owner of skins has REALLY made that org dysfunctional
The glaring problem with the wiz is that they keep playing Gil at the point and he almost lost the game. Coaches keep putting him there, even though he isnt doing the job and Javalle never got back in.
All of that to say, the players can only play with the resources that are given to them on the field. In the case of the skins, the naked eye tells you that the kicker missed the field goals, but it could’ve have been made easier for him, and with the wiz, stop putting the person at the point that’s making turnovers and not playing D.

datonypony and other bloggers,
I’m just so fed up with Flip right now, the other players are doing their part, but we’re holding back where we could be for Gil, who seems to think he has to hold back for others, because he isn’t back to his pre-injury status. Everyone else (just about) seems to get it, except for the person that can make the difference, and tonight really showed where we are at as a team, and where we are at, to appease a player or two. Yes, we won, but we could have a better record right now, and everyone deserves better (org, team, and us).

So I’m still overseas & have been cruising the blog for updates & such (with the time dif it really helps) but not really posting.
I have to say folks, y’all are really coming up with some crazy solutions, trades, benchings, etc.
It’s pretty funny stuff but at the same time depressing… What’s happened on here?
The Wiz will sort everything out & be fine.

Gil does an outstanding job at the point and his defense is not as bad most people think. Matter of fact, his d is not bad at all. He tends to zone up during man to man d

Good games last night from Antawn, Andray and JaVale.
M2 — you think Gil is playing *well?* No, actually, he’s playing terrible basketball right now.

Tom, I know you don’t like Slick but you gotta admit he had a good game last night. As did Antawn, Andray and JaVale. It was particularly neat to see the two guys who had scarcely been playing make the difference (Slick and McGee).
I do agree that Gil is playing poorly. He is certainly all world in TO’s.
I just don’t get why Oberto plays. McGee is clearly better. And now that Blatche is playing the 3, let him also back up Jamison and let McGuire get time at the 3. What does Oberto do that McGuire doesn’t do except get a lot of TO’s.
And I think Young will prove to be a better 2 than Stevenson or Foye. His D is now almost as good and he’s worlds better on the offensive end.

I didn’t say Gil was playing well…
I said that I can’t believe how desperate everyone on this blog is right now.
I will agree I expected 9-4 vs the 4-9 we are but think about it all for a minute.
We basically have NEW everything. It will all get sorted out…
Relax, breathe in a bag… & enough with all the knee jerk trade talk & benchings.
I mean I’ve heard Flip sucks, bench Butler, trade Arenas, where’s Etan when you need him?, etc etc… RELAX
I heard all this same stuff about Kobe two seasons ago in LA from the fans there when he came back from injury & the Lakers stunk it up for a while (not two seasons away, but back from injury nonetheless) & now they all think he’s GOD again. Ahhhhhhh, sports!

M2 — I agree w/ you; the season is young. We can improve. I didn’t mean to indicate that I am terribly worried. In fact, the only real concern I have about Gil is the turnovers.
neal — yes, Nick played pretty well last night. He shot pretty well, and he complemented that with some productivity on the boards and even had a couple of assists. If he always played at last night’s level he’d be a somewhat above average NBA 2 guard.
Of course, the guy who had the best game last night was Jrue Holiday, the Philly rookie. He had 11 points on only 6 shots to go with 6 rebounds, an assist, 2 steals and a blocked shot! — in 9:40. Thank heavens he didn’t play longer!!!
That’s the first I’ve seen of him. Looks like he could be one heck of a player.

I LOVE Jrue Holiday…
He has everything it takes to be what Westbrook is in OKC.
NBA is about opportunity.
How’s Pech doing this season anyway?
