Game Day San Antonio
2:23 AM EST….Dave Johnson…….What you need to know about last night…“We just didn’t defend”, said head coach Flip Saunders. “We just let them do what ever they wanted and it didn’t seem to hurt. We scored enough points to win.”But even with scoring 108 points the offense still did not look in rhythm…again Saunders:“We scored a lot of individual stuff,” Saunders noted. When Mike Miller is not getting shots that usually is indication that we are holding the ball too much and not moving the ball” Mike Miller only had 4 shots in 34 minutes—So we move on…here is to a night like we had opening night in Dallas…..BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 8:30 PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there is a LISTEN LIVE link on the right side of the BLOG.
6:50 PM Dave and Glenn checking in from San Antonio….arena is starting to come alive,,,Tony Parker is still a maybe…Manu Ginobili is out..Several of the Spurs have warmly greeted former SpurFabricio Oberto

the way this team has been playing we are not gona beat a team like the spurs. They play sloppy on offense and and lazy on defense. any team with a gaurd worth having can beat gil or caron off the dribble with ease. they dont even try. its one thing when you cant play defense, but look at how quick caron and gil move on offense. thats because they want to score points so they do whatever it takes. but on defense it seems like all the think about is wanting to score again instead of how they can stop there man.
I hope we win tonight but its probably not gona happen. on the bright side, we get to see how haywood does against a elite big man in duncan. we havent seen him play anyone worth mentioning thus far. im excited about seeing him go up against the duncans, Bynums, and Dwights.. well maybe i hope dwight is injured that game cuz he is a beast.

Lets beat the Spurs tonight. I want to see foye and dray get good playing time and produce. Yesterday people were saying when antawn was hurt we played great D but now we ae back to soft d but we held cleveland to 91 and then okc scorched us. We have to wait a few games to see what kind of team we will be. Yesterday a really good, young exciting team beat the wizards. Maybe the wizards can beat an old, banged up Spurs team. Caron butler can be a good defender but he has to go into the game with the right mind set, Antawn has to crash the d-boards like he does the o-boards, and Gil just needs to get his rythm back. Gil keeps talking about how he wants to be a 20-10 guy like cp3 but he really just has to worry about making the right decisions and shouldn’t worry about stats. I have no complaints for Brendan, but Flip has to trust Mcgee to come in a give us a different look. If mike is hurt sit him and let foye and young share his minutes. THe wizards shouldn’t risk mike’s health.

What a pathetic exhibition of basketball last night..back to the same old “Me First” when it comes to shot selection here’s hoping that the fresh air in San Antonio will clear some head’s and play like a TEAM!
Comment from gray16
Time November 21, 2009 at 1:45 PM
here’s to hoping some defense will show up tonight.
with tony and ginobli sidelined this team should definitely be able to hold this team to 90 or less points. duncan isn’t young anymore, he shouldn’t get any more than 20 pts, but of course it is jamison guarding him. so then it’s just a matter of defending the three and caron hopefully containing richard jefferson.
i got a feeling rj is going to drop a lot of points on the wizards tonight, but i hope i’m wrong.
on the offensive end, the wizards need to get better shots and stay in rhythm. gilbert is looking a lot like his old self when it comes to shot selection, but not when it comes to shot percentage. he needs to go inside of the three point line more, and only shoot open threes. tawn i’m not even worried about. and caron needs to stop taking a shot every time he touches the ball. he takes so many unnecessary contested jumpers it’s not even funny, which is a big reason for his horrible shooting percentage.
and like you all are saying, sit mike miller down. 5 points, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds, while not being able to take open shots? how is that any better than dominic mcguire?
i’m sorry but dom mcguire AND nick young deserve more playing time. of course both are going to make mistakes at first, but if flip is willing to give the starters 10+ games to play through theirs, i think he can spare to play the young guns 10+ minutes to play through theirs.

I think the point Flip is making if Mike Miller is healthy and he’s only getting 4 shots in 34 minutes it means everybody else is shooting the rock and not distributing the ball in the offense..Miller is the best shooter we have and the best overall facilitator on the team I think Flips is saying hey run the offesne because we need Mike Miller involved if we’re going to win consistantly..if he’s healthy and I’m not sure he is even 95% ready to go Miller needs to be on the floor!

OKC has got a bright future. At this point, I’d rather have their “big three” of Durant, Green, and Westbrook than our broken down and hobbled “big three”. They are just a few years and a few key role players from being a very dangerous team.
I still don’t understand why Miller is out there so much with one arm. It seems almost comical to me.
Comment from bbman7
Time November 21, 2009 at 3:01 PM
The comical part of it is that he is playing with one arm and has been the best player out there for us.. i would like to see him sit for a couple weeks tho if thats what it takes to get healthy.. this would give foye minutes and could get back to where he was before his ankle injury
but i think this game is going to come down to us getting out on shooters… haywood really needs to know who he is guarding b/c he has a tendency to hang out in the lane too much when he is going against shooting big men.. and thats not going to work against mcdyess and bonner

Time November 21, 2009 at 3:03 PM
Everyone should vote for our big three to the all star game daily and haywood as a write in vote, even if gil is the only one with any shot of being voted in as a starter. When people like anderson verajao get more votes than twan it’s sad.

Problem with the Wizards is their options at when to play certain players against certain teams. Finding that proper mix will take time, just hope it does not take the entire season
Wizards have a few options at the way they can play against certain teams. Against the quick, speedy, athletic teams (Miami, NY, Houston, Philly, Ok, Atlanta) McGee, McGuire and Boykins should get key minutes. Slow teams with certain players that are quick, speedy and/or athletic (Cavs, Boston, Orlando, Chicago) our big three should be able to take em…
Of course the Wizards can force opposing teams to an up tempo or slow it down. Defensive sets have been above average.

Time November 21, 2009 at 3:48 PM
I agree with tyrone, the Wiz are good against teams with older players, but terrible against teams with speedy and energetic players. Unfortunately those speedy teams are the ones at the bottom of the league, aside from Denver, Utah and Los Angeles. This means we have an even chance of winning against the better teams, but a worse chance at beating the under .500 teams.
All in all, a poor outlook if they continue the way they play with slow Gil, slow Caron and slow Mike Miller. Antawn only marginally faster, and Dray again only slightly quicker than Antawn. Dominic can’t shoot or penetrate to the basket, and Nick is lost on the plays. Next summer might just be rebuild time.

We seem to not play well against ATHLETIC teams – ie Atlanta, OKC and others. But I agree with Magic man – these guys dont show a desire to play defense and it all starts with Gil and Caron. The same guys who want to shoot the rock all the time and can move quickly on offense but have heavy feet on defense.
If they didn’t try to do so much on their own on offense then they wouldnt be so tired on defense. Gil cuts low on every screen and his man can just pull up all day. He wasnt doing that in other games but he reverted back to Eddie Jordan days.
Let’s play some D tonight win or lose!!!

In Gil’s defense, about 6 of those misses last night were fouls and they werent just Gil. They called touch foul after touch foul on us but we were getting to the rim with contact every play and nothing got called wether it was Gil, Miller, Caron, or whoever
Comment from dlts20

Lanka, Gil has had a couple of bad games on D but he’s been pretty good for the most part this year. Dont think that all those low cuts are him being lazy or whatever. Some are truly be design. Westbrook is one of the best in the league at penetrating and finishing at the rim with his athletic ability but his J is garbage. Sometimes its the scouting report that makes Gil go under

With the Spurs not having Ginobli tonight, it should certainly make things easier for the Wizards tonight……we just need to make sure Tim Duncan doesn’t get those offensive rebounds, and they don’t shoot those 3s cause they have some guys on their team that can shoot!

I have always loved our matchup with SA when healthy because Ive said it a million times and Ill say it again. Wood is by far the best low post defender in the NBA. He’s the only guy in the league that can shut all these top guys down one on one. Duncan is another one. He never scores straight up on Wood. He’ll only score off a pick & roll or a long J but thats it. If you try to post him up and do moves, it wont work at all. I dont care if its Howard, Yao, Shaq, Jefferson, or whoever. The only guys who score is like Z because Wood wont come way out on the floor to stop that J but its a long J. He still gets out on the midrange stuff
Comment from dlts20
Time November 21, 2009 at 7:20 PM
Jamison is a straight beast but he still makes me the maddest. He’s still the one guy who wont ever pass. Just because Gil does the pick & roll and swings it back to you, doesnt mean that you have to shoot it every time. There are alot of times where he instantly shoots it but the D is already rotating to him so if he makes the one extra pass to Miller, its a real wide open shot. AJ never does it though. Thats why I get mad on his Comcast interview when he talks about the team making excuses and how they need to make the extra pass. This is coming from the guy who never makes that extra pass. If he does that then we are way more deadly

I hope the wiz get it together like everyone else, but it just wont happen with this system and these players. one has to go. the reason we were so good the last time we were all healthy is because we had a system where we were running. eddie jordan knew these guys couldnt (wouldnt) play defense so he he wanted to outscore teams. Flip has turned this team to a half court team. all well and good, except, that means now we have to play D. we slow the game down so we arent gona score as much but that means we have to stop other teams from scoring. that is not happening. I will say every player is doing better than years past (excluding caron) but thats not really saying much.
Flip is a good coach and its not his fault these players dont like D, but that was the hand he was dealt. so if we want to be successful one or more of things will have to happen.
1. the players start shooting better and start playing really good D. (probably not gona happen)
2. get a new coach who can implement a fast past, run and gun offense
3. Make some trades to bring in solid players who can play D. they may not be “Gil” but if u bring in a derrick rose type player we should be fine. not as great a scorer but can get the job done on both sides. best thing to remember when making a trade is we arent trying to get a better player or player as good, we are trying to get a player that will make our overall team better.

Our team still comes down to Gil. No matter what, we wont be great until he returns to the old form again but I dont really worry about that because it is what it is and its too early for that. He is the main thing that is seperating us right now. He doesnt have that pure burst although he looks way better than he did a couple of games ago and he doesnt have that lift on his J and espicaly at the rim. I think if he has one big game then he will get his confidence back and thats when we will really take off. Thats when you can judge us. I think its stupid for everyone espicaly our own fans to rip Gil now or say that we suck when you can tell that he’s not playing like Gil yet. Until he plays like Gil and we still stink or he still isnt good enough then you can go off but not yet and espicaly not until he gets right

however gil is playing, is him playing like gil. We cant sit around anticipating that he will ever play like he did pre-injury. we are in the here and now. here and now, post-injury, Gil is not the “hibachi” he once was. Its hard to accept but many players get injured and never return to there once glorious days (grant hill).
im not saying that this will be the case with Gil, im just saying it is the case thus far.

yeah the turnovers vs assists are really killing the wizards. turnovers aren’t a new thing, but with a half court offense that flip runs, vs the fast pace system eddie ran, the turnovers shouldn’t be this high. it’s just another result of no rhythm out there.
and definitely the minutes need to be checked. flip has tired out the players in a couple of games this season, they need to have energy going into the 4th which means, yes flip, playing the young guns. if the team isn’t winning without them, you can’t do any worse with them.
definitely good points jeffmalone.

although i think sitting mike is the best thing, i will admit sometimes wincing is more a sign of being scared than hurt.
i remember when i dislocated my finger playing basketball, it didn’t really hurt, but you couldn’t tell from the look on my face. i was just freaked out, and hoping it wasn’t to bad. then about 2 days after that i was back out there playing ball, (even though i shouldn’t have) and if something would contact the finger, it would barely hurt, but the immediate reaction was to wince and hold the finger. let’s hope this is what’s going on with mike.

agreed datonypony! We can’t fire Flip Saunders though, no matter what anyone says! His system will work, but it needs to work sooner rather than later in the season!! Plus if we fire Flip, who are we gonna put as head coach? Ed Tapscott again? lol not in a million years! The only reasonably decent guy that would be our next interim coach would be Sam Cassell in my opinion, but come on, would Grunfeld really put a guy who has only been out of the league for 1 year as a head coach? That’s why, Flip Saunders will be here for a while, and something good better come from it!

once again, starting players getting away with so much
flip if it was nick young out there taking quick shots with 10+ on the shot clock, he would be sit down before his sub could check in
you need a spark, go to the bench. don’t tell me you are worried about keith bogans scoring points on nick young. nick isn’t the greatest of defenders, but he’s a good enough one to stop bogans. put nick in for some offense, at least you know one guy will be moving on offense then.

Magicman: John Wall is going to probably be the number 1 pick: The Wizards have shown they are incapable of winning the number 1 pick, or when they have back when they drafted Kwame Brown, they totally waste it……besides, the Wizards have only 17 more games to win before they are better than last year!

It’s one thing to lose close games, but not to even be competitive is another. The Wiz, with 3 former all-stars were down by 30 at one point tonight.
I know in professional tennis, they fine players for lack of effort. Believe it or not, this happened once to Roger Federer early in his career. If I was NBA commisioner, if a team falls behind by 25 points I would fine the team a whole games salary.
I just can’t believe the Wiz are this bad. But seeing is believing.
Once again these are the moves I would do:
1) Start Andray and let Jamison be 6th man
2) Play Javelle 15 mins/game
3) Play Dom over Stevenson.
But Flip sees these guys every day in practice and I presume he knows best.

I see what’s wrong, the three previous all-stars should not be playing at the same time anymore. There is just too much non-defense on the floor at one time. There is too much confidence being placed in their hands. Their window has closed as far as carrying this team on their shoulders. They should be blended in with the rest of the team. The cleveland game proved this by itself. They weren’t going to win that game with the starting five they had. It isn’t confidence, it’s playing the proper rotations and not leaving them on the floor for 3/4 of the game (the only time they’re not, is if they’re losing by more than 10 points). And yes, if Flip isn’t being told to play them the way he is, he needs a swift kick, cuz he ain’t doing shizznick yet.

I mean really, Roger Mason said before the game, playing us would help him get out of his “funk” and it did. I’ve seen him the past 3/4 games and the way he was playing, i excpected to see his name on the waiver wires the next day….HE WAS THAT BAD!!
Everyone turned the corner on us tonight. We have no perimeter D AND no inside presence on O. Flip can not play those three together any more, they are our liabilities at this point.

If the players are running plays from that thick playbook that Coach Saunders has, the playbook should be ceremoniously burned at half court of the next home game because the plays obviously stink. If the players are NOT running the plays from that thick playbook that Coach Saunders has, the players should be benched. Either way, the responsibility is on Coach Saunders. We are not a patient group of fans here in DC Flip. You’d better get it together sooner than later because there might not be a later. We’ve suffered enough!

I don’t know if we are the oldest starting 5 in the NBA, but we certainly are the most plodding, lazy, unenthusiastic, slowest, and least quick starting 5.
Gil “the shovel” Arenas and Caron “the ball stops here” Butler are consistently digging us holes that are difficult to overcome. Maybe they should both come off the bench for awhile. A little humility might go a very long way with these two.
If Caron can’t fit into the offense, get him out of it. If he can’t or won’t play decent defense, get him out of it. Put his butt on the bench and see what happens (does the Nets game give anyone a hint).
If Gil can’t/won’t throw many more passes that lead to baskets (assists), get him off the point guard position. If he can’t put the ball in the basket and continues to shoot, put his butt on the bench.
It is getting VERY old to watch these two play like two over-the-hill guys while talent sits on the bench.
We are getting beat by young, quick, athletic teams while we start older, slower, less-athletic players and allow our young, quick, athletic players to languish on the bench.
The game became interesting tonight when ‘Dray, McGee and McGuire were in the game. It was a shame to see Nick not dressed to play while Oberto got minutes. Let’s develop some talent. Are we the only team in the league that can’t manage to get some developmental minutes for young, talented players? Come on, we’re not trying to protect an undefeated streak for crying out loud.

I don’t believe that most coaches who are down 20 going into the 4th quarter would decide to play a match-up zone defense. When you are down that many, you have to get after the ball and you can’t give up easy shots. Maybe a pressing, trapping zone would have been acceptably, but not the passive match-up zone…it invites open outside shots…and there was Roger Jr. getting well!

@gettabig-I really thought with Flip on board, we would never see you again after Coach Tapp, however we are back in that position again, and I for one could not agree with you more! You have shot blockers, yet you play zone? To leave shooters open? Then you instruct the players, to run out and challenge every shot, put a hand up, and with good ball movement that gets beat every team, not too mention opens up driving lanes? And as far as developing a bench, we have done zero! Yet, we talked about having one of the deepest in the NBA? Flip this is on you, we need to speed the game up with the offensive players we have, and play more man to man, and trap when we come in (if we come in with McGee and Blatche)

Gabbo? Do you realize how sad what you just said is?
Oldest “acting” starting 5 against the young, quick, atheletic teams like the Spurs with Parker, Duncan, Ratliff, Mcdyess, and Finley LOL. Oh my goodness how sad is that? We have no FIRE. Where is the “want to play”? Do these guys make so much money that the game doesn’t really matter more than the Mercedes?
I expected Gilbert to have some rust but this is getting ridiculous. What the heck happened to that 20 assist to 2 turnover guy? I guess he left his shot on the sandlot courts in DC.
It was nice to see JaVale get some minutes when the game was out of reach. In 15 minutes he shot 2 for 4 from the field…. sunk all 3 free throws…. got 3 rebounds …. and 3 blocks. Why is Fab first off the bench behind Brendan? What has he done to warrant that status on this team? He is solid but has no upside.
I feel sorry for Nick and Dominic. The trade for Miller and Foye unfortunately sealed their fate for this season. Still I expected to see Dominic get some “stopper” minutes. So far not so much.
Oh well… on to the Eddie Jordan’s

I’m sitting here watching Pech get burn in Minnesota and Blake throw assists and hit three’s for Portland. Even if players we didn’t want are not all-stars, they are proving that they can “fit” into systems else-where.
McGee should be getting minutes each and every game, as well as Dom, them not being ready to play in non-existing systems (if there is one, i would be ashamed to say it), is the most over-used excuse being used, BY ALL THREE COACHES THAT WE HAVE HAD. I don’t even see how they can say it with a straight face anymore…lol…or it must be me, that doesn’t have a sense of humor. We don’t need either one to shoot, and tell them that, unless it’s a dunk or the shot clock has three seconds or less on it. Maybe this team is being Micro-managed, or maybe Flip is playing their “favorite” players just to show them that times have changed, so that when he makes the change, they will understand. Whatever the reason, no one is putting up with this much longer. It has nothing to do with not being a fan or patience, or chemistry.
If we weren’t fans, we wouldn’t be on here typing. We’ve been patient (seeing more than one game with the same play is long enough), and as far as chemistry, Flip ain’t mixing all of his ingredients for the “right” mix.
Anyway, that’s enough from me. Peace.

If you have scoring, then play to your stregnth, if you nees stops play your best defensive players on the roster. This Gilert at the point experiment is about 4 games to long over for me, he is a scorer. Is anyone on the roster having fun, who’s talking NBA Championship now?

JeffM, they are too much of a defensive liability to have our previous all-stars on the court at one time. Haywood needs help down there and also there’s really no inside threat on O (Jamison can’t bang with a real PF), with your starting five.
I can’t watch those three on the court at the same time anymore, it’s too painful. It’s like watching Roy Jones or Holyfield staying in the ring, knowing that they have lost that edge. When it’s time to walk away, it’s time to walk away. It’s time to bury this big three in Washington.

I’d like to hear/read somewhere that Sam Cassell was working with Nick on “every” off the shot skill in the game. So far I’ve heard nothing, but then, this is the Wizards we are talking about. What have the Wizards done to bring this kid with the sweetest of shots along in the NBA?
Jeff I don’t know if you read my post on the last thread, but, your Tap comment gives me a little more reason to speculate. How involved is Ernie in the actual coaching of the team? Tap may have been instucted as you say to play the younguns to get the team ready for a seasoned NBA coach. Now that we have a bone fide NBA coach with “real” credentials is Ernie handcuffing him? Again… with 3 radically different coaches the rotation/substitution patterns have been all too similar.
Comment from dcbutler357

The only way that he can regain this team is to stop playing that starting five. If we feel this way, just think about how the rest of the team feels sitting on the bench watching this BS. Starters stinking up the joint, and staying on the floor for a whole quarter at a time, but you only play me five minutes at a time (AB) OR when the game is out of reach (rest of bench)

@dcbutler-Here’s the thing we have an athletic 21 year old freak on the bench (what are we doing saving his legs so he can have a long career) who was thought of enough by the Olympic Select Committee to come and play against the best in the word and then he played well. Yet he cannot get a sniff of action because he makes mistakes, really? Every NBA player makes mistakes…..Yet you see when Blatche and McGee play together (and they play well) the shots in the paint are challenged and we can get out on the break, you cannot coach ENERGY AND EFFORT however you can choose to insert the players that bring it in the game!
Wizards Energy Players
Boykins
McGee
DMAC
Dray
So there is no excuse to play these players in every game……Tell me how could Shannon Brown, Devaugn George, Trevor Ariza, and others go to the Lakers get playing time and confidence and make solid contributions in the NBA? “Don’t hate the player, hate the game”…It’s on you Flip……..

I am over the system crap, this is on the current staff, and Grif I want to believe in me in the worst way that Coach Cassell is working with Nick (I hope that is true).
All players that play at the elite level of the NBA have talent, so what sets them apart? COACHING, you can either coach em’ up and give them confidence, or have players thinking too much and not executing on the floor.

Flip has essentially killed these guys, and as long as we hae the mentality of not developing the bench and playing the vets 38 minutes a night, we will not do anything in the playoffs.
Coach Pop coaches the enitre roster..and he develops talent, Coach Jackson is doing it, Coach Woodson, Coach Rivers? You need a bench in the NBA to win games PERIOD, and to me Alvin Gentry should be the coach of the year look at how he developed his no name second unit outside of Barbosa?

-Caron getting the ball and shooting

It’s too cold to ride my bike, so I have to find another hobby. I’m not watching anymore dysfunctional systems. It’s just not healthy, and what makes these owners/managers/coaches feel like we owe anything to them to keep watching this stuff.
A game and a half of sorry play is trying to play your way in, anything more, you need to get your mojo back on the practice field somewhere…..lol…and the poor young’ns can’t get a chance to play their way in or out….AMAZING…
Well, i’m out for real this time….have a good night everyone and HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Here it is for all to see, the Wizards are the 24th ranked offense in the NBA (keep in mind we only have 30 teams) And please take a look at the assists per game as well:

Flip said that next game the bench players will get an opportunity. Apparently there are some tensions in between the players though. This is from nba.com news.

NBA.com post…. “We have guys that are frustrated that they’re not playing and I’m sure they are sitting there wanting opportunities,” Saunders said. “And guys will get opportunities starting Monday because we’re not getting it done as it is right now.”
thats what im talking about big EGO’s and all right on the bench its time to be a team or be on the bench.. who wants to be the best player on a crapy team ill tell you what put me on the bench let other guys play i will sit there all year and take a ring just like every other guy
i have never been so sick to watch a team with this kind of talent blow everything over a stat sheet

That is what will separate Flip from the other coaches. The vets CAN NOT RUN this team if we are going to win. PERIOD.
Players shouldn’t have that much control, expecially if you haven’t WON anything yet.

Dcbutler357 I agree with you……how are the younger guys gonna develop into veterans if they don’t get a chance to play? Look at Blatche the past few games when Jamison was out……he was averaging close to 17 points and almost 7 or 8 rebounds when he had good minutes……that is what we need our bench guys to be able to do!!!

Soooooo, the Cleveland game wasn’t the big turnaround after all…! I admit, I got a bit frustrated yesterday and stopped listening before the game was over. (It was past 3:00 AM here in Stuttgart, Germany). Well, it’s a new day now and a new game coming up, and I’ve managed to regain my enthusiasm and my belief that this team can still win big this season, so here we go! Hoping for a great TEAM effort on both ends of the floor tonight!
On another note: I don’t think Flip should let Mike Miller play heavy minutes, no matter how deep the hole is we’re in. The guy is hurt and the team definetely will risk losing him for a longer period of time if this goes on. Hoping for a good game tonight no matter what! Go Wizards!!!!
