Game Day Oklahoma City

6:18 EST…Dave Johnson….eager for the start of a winning streak but facing a Thunder team that is off to a sold start at 6-6 and has an exciting youg lineup with Jeff Green, Kevin Durant, and Russell Westbrook ….It was fascinating  to watch Flip Saunders stay with the lineup that was doing well in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s win over the Cavaliers…It is something he mentioned back in training camp when he was asked about rotations and sure enough it played out….Wizards do not win that game without Antawn Jamison’s 31 points and 10 rebounds but he only played 1:41 of the fourth quarter . Brendan Haywood also was a monster on the boards and on defense but did not play much in the fourth quarter and Gilbert Arenas did not play at all–although he did go to the scorers table to check in late in the fourth before the Wizards went on a 5-0 run….On Haywood who had 13 rebounds Flip Saunders noted: ” We have talked a lot  about pursuing the ball He  has improved his rebounding range. Before he used to get rebounds  that came off to him. Now he is going to get rebounds out of his range.  He is moving a lot to pursue  the ball.”  And on offense Haywood has noticed: “Things get tough when guys are jab-stepping and holding, and holding the ball. No. You gotta  get off of it. If you don’t have it in your first two or three dribbles then pass the ball to a team mate .When the ball moves we are good team.  When the ball sticks we are not that good.”—-BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at  8:oo PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link to listen on the computer…..

5:40…Dave and Glenn checking in from Ford Center…talked to Randy Foye in lobby says he is feeling better and better..this is Thunder’s 5th game in 7 nights..we want to get after them early

Good morning Dave/fellow bloggers,

Great win against the Cavs. Lets take from that and carry that into tonight. I think the Wizards need to get back on D cuz this is a young team that can run. Also it seemed like we are always succesful when we push the ball and keep the ball moving around like haywood said. We can’t allow the opponents to be able to set up their Defense against us. Lets go Wizards!!!

Etan Thomas vs. Brendan Haywood !!!!!!!

—-
LOL – is it UFC 109?

This is a back-to-back on the road, so it will be a challenge no matter what. The Spurs, looking ahead, is also desperate for a win.

Gil needs to attack early and then settle for jumpers later. I don’t like the fact only after 12 straight missed j’s does he go at the rim.

Antawn can jumpstart his offense at any time, so I think the ball needs to flow to Caron early. Let Caron get some rhythm early in the first quarter and not wait until the second. Flip has to run plays to get Caron at spots where he’s comfortable taking shots. Thus far, it hasn’t been the case all season long.

hey everyone, Wizards Magazine is airing their season debut of “The Journey” on Sunday at noon on ABC. The journey is a documentary of the Wizards 2009-10 season. Check out a trailer above.

Comment from wizards_fusion

out of curiosity, how can you have a documentary of this season when we’re only 10 games in?

“the journey” sounds more like a documentary for the PREseason as guys get ready for the season.

something i like:

after facing one of the best teams in the league, and winning big, the wizards now go on to face a bad team BUT

arenas played 32 minutes, blatche played 17 minutes, foye played 3 minutes, and jamison played 37 (alot but not too much)

so you have those great of players who should have plenty of energy for tonights game, and that’s a big plus. this team just needs to focus and keep the energy up. something tells me gilbert is going to go off tonight (he has usually responded well after poor games throughout his career), and caron should play well too.

defensively, the main guys to stop are of course durant, green, and westbrook. the keys to that imo are,

don’t leave green, he can hit set shots with the best of them, if you aren’t in his face when he catches the ball, he will probably make it.

force durant to put the ball on the ground. haywood waiting for him in the lane will make him hesitant, and he doesn’t have a lot of “go to moves” to beat his defender. i think caron can do a good job against him, he just has to put in the effort.

against westbrook the team just has to try to force him to his left, and not allow him to drive straight in. also just make sure he doesn’t get a lot of momentum on his drives, which all of this stuff, gil can do. (yes gil i’m not as crazy as i sound lol)

so this should be a win for this team, as long as they stay focused and play determined like they did in that second half. i also expect a big game from brendan, etan always brings out the best in haywood lol.

Good Story: I post on here alot but i follow every Wizards game they’ve been my team since like 04. Ne way…..Im going to be at the game tonight.

Im a Wizards fan living in OKlahoma City, i always root for the Thunder but not tonight lol. Im going to be wearing a Gilbert Arenas half home/half away (half white half blue) jersey and my chick is wearing a gilbert arenas womans jersey blue. We’re going to be sitting on the floor somewhere behind the backdboard i think but if you see me let me know lol

Go Wiz!! and is it just me or does ne1 want Gil to hurry and drop 50 to get back n top 5 ppg and shut all the haters up!!

wizards_fusion….think HBO’s Hard Knocks..

Its a documentary style film that will give you a behind the scenes type feel over the course of the year. so right now it focuses on basically the first couple games and Antawn’s return.

Comment from maggicman11
Time November 20, 2009 at 5:27 PM

Let go WIZ!! we should really run the offense thru twaan and pick and roll plays toward the basket instead of having gil drive and hope for calls. he is not getting them on the road. We can not under estimate durant either just because OKC doesnt get alot of national attention. he is as dangerous offensively as kobe or wade. I hope to see Dom match up with him for extended time tonight. durant is 6′9 or 6′10 and may have too much of a height advantage for stevenson. i know lebron is big too but durant is a much better shooter than lebron so dom may be a much better choice defensively than dsteve.

Also i like haywood against Etan. we always heard stories about how hard they play against each other so this is our chance to finally see it. but with the way haywood has been playing and his height advantage he should dominate. not to under estimate etan. ive watched him play on nbatv and he brings alot of high paced energy to the game, and has dominated other centers in the 3 games ive seen him play . haywood will have to bring his A game

I’ll be listening on the radio tonight (as usual in the land of no cable) looking for the same tough defense we put on the Cavs. The two broad things that the Wizards need are the stifling defense they had Wednesday and ball movement. Not having SEEN the game Wednesday I don’t know, but it sure sounded like we were passing the ball around more than during the losing streak.
That said, another win like the Cavs game and the Kool-Aid from the Dallas game might start being sipped again.

Comment from neal

Good to hear from you claw. I’ll be looking for you.

If we don’t beat these guys, there’s no excuse.

Yes, Gil needs to drive early, and get Butler involved early. And yes, make Durant put the ball on the floor. Can’t play him loose, as so often has been the Wizard habit on perimeter players.

The Coach must trust all of his players, and you build trust with practive and real game situations. I am not for a tight rotation this early in the year

Some random thoughts…

- Gil is still rusty

- I would start Andray and make Antwn 6th man, but still get 30 min/game. The Wiz play their best D when Brendan and Andray are out there together.

- What’s with Mike’s shoulder? His lingering injury reminds me of the injury Gil had a few years ago. The team took him to an outside chiropractor who popped it back into place. Mike is playing with one arm. It is effecting his movement. The Wiz medical staff are hurting this franchise.

- Before Jamison came back the Wiz were holding teams to 43% shooting. it was 48% last year. Now it is back to the soft defense.

- Andray has got to hustle for offensive boards like Jamison does. He just lingers around the perimiter too much. If you’re only going to play 15 min/game you might as well pack in 24 minutes of hustle into those minutes.

- Glad to see Etan tearing it up with the Thunder.

- If things don’t change in another 15 games, there will be some personnel changes.

_Flip isn’t going anywhere. He’s a good coach. Let’s see what adjustments he makes.

This has to be the hit bottom point. Losing to the Blunder. Nowhere to go but up.

I agree with you guys who are about done with the big three. I’d give Saunders till 1/1 to have a go at it. If they are still into trying to outscore the enemy we give up on them and get whatever we can for Arenas and at least one of the others. Start (again) to rebuild. EG staked everything on them – he’s got to take the blame. It’s a shame. I’ve thought all along he would be an excellent GM, especially after Unseld. No more excuses.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time November 21, 2009 at 12:00 AM

I like Coach Saunders and I think that he has a good basketball philosophy. Now, however, I’m beginning to doubt his ability as a game-time coach:

How do you play a one-armed player 34:30 when he shoots 2/4 with 2 boards AND IS OBVIOUSLY IN GREAT PAIN?????…Everyone sings the praises of the depth of the Wizards bench. Yes, Miller has guts and Yes he plays hard, but if you don’t have a two-armed player on the bench who can play better in the NBA than a one-armed player, what kind of a bench do you have?

AJ might find some small relief in the fact that he is no longer considered to be tied for the worst defensive player on the team. Thus far, he has been FAR surpassed by Caron. Juicy Juice is the slowest, least motivated defensive player on the team. I lost count of the number of times his man simply put the ball on the floor and went to the basket with him trailing. Additionally, “the ball stops here” did it again on offense…the ball stopped at #3. If EG is not shopping this “all-Star” I would be very surprised. #3 simply doesn’t fit in on this team no matter how many points he scores.

The Wiz are at they’re best with either Caron or Gil out of the game. They simply can not get it together.

The “Big Three” simply means that they will play the most minutes; take the most shots; score the most points; and, sadly, also give up the most points.

Horribly coached game; terribly played game.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense
Time November 21, 2009 at 12:04 AM

‘Dray is my man. I want very much for him to succeed, but I have to agree with ChenierFan “Andray has got to hustle for offensive boards like Jamison does”. As ChenierFan points out, ‘Dray’s minutes will be limited, so when he is in the game he has got to contest every single rebound and every single shot as though each was the last play of the last second of a tied 7th game of a NBA final.

I wonder if the Wizards feel old? If they watch a replay of the game they will. Those kids ran around the “old appearing guys” all night. It was almost like they were toying with them. They would let them get to within a point… laugh… and run away again.

Gabbo Caron stinks on the defensive end I completely agree. I’ve never seen a player expend less energy trying to stay in front of his man.

I’m with rest of you …. why are we still playing righty? Grimmacing in pain doesn’t get you any points or stops. Cmon coach get with it.

On nights when we are getting beat primarily in the middle wouldn’t it be nice to see at least a JaVale sighting once in a while? I’m not saying give the kid 30 a night but come on there are circumstances where he can change the momentum.

I didn’t expect to see a lot of Dominic this year, but, I did expect to see him in times where a player or players (Durant/Green) were taking it to us to see if situationally he could slow one of them down. Maybe someone super glued his shorts to the bench?

Don’t know guys it seems with us the more things change the more they remain the same.

For Flip to ride Mike “One Arm” Miller for 30 plus minutes for 5 pts and 3 rebounds and 3 TO’s (something like that) is a horrible mistake. The Wizards really need to do this

PG Boykins
SG Arenas
SF Butler
PF Jamison
C Haywood

First off the bench Dray, Foye (for Arenas), DMAC (for Butler) Boykins needs to play 25 min plus a night for this team to win. And McGee should sub for Haywood, we should always see McGee and Dray for stretches in game.

Comment from Gotabigboyoffense

@dcbutler357 – Hang in there. This is a playoff team and once we get there we will be very dangerous. I believe that Coach Saunders is a very solid b-ball guy and is capable of leading this team. I really believe that he has to convince EG to cut some deal that sends #3 and #2 somewhere for a very solid 3 or 4 player (Charlie V. keeps coming to mind).

Comment from GrifonRacing

DCB Minnesota was nothing before Flip and nothing after Flip. Kevin Garnett may have turned out to be the superstar he is all by himself, but, Flip had a lot to do with his rise as a star. In Detroit Flip didn’t screw anything up lol. He took a good team and kept them good.

Your puppet without stings comment is interesting. Do you guys think Ernie sits back and lets Flip do his thing? Or do you think Ernie has a role in how the team is coached as well? It’s interesting to me that through three drastically different coaches the rotations/substitutions have been very similar.

I think he pulled a groin the other day, but he would have looked like he was stuck in cement during that game, but he would’ve knocked someone on the floor…lol…this was the perfect game for Wingspans 1 and 2 to get in there and scrum with their wing players, but oh well, on to tomorrow. SA has lost two in a row, correct? Tony Parker is out and Ginobilli has a injury also, but I don’t know their status. I think we’re going to lose either DMac or Javelle in a trade, along with either Caron or AJ…..sooner or later.

Whoopi Goldberg should coach the Wizards and guide them to wins like she did in the movie Eddie.

I’m going to wait until Game 20-25 before unleashing any more negative comments at the team. There is no reason to repeat the same sentiment as others when the feelings are all mutual concerning the state of the team.

If big changes are coming for this team – so be it. There is nothing worse than trying to support something that doesn’t work.
