Game Day Cavaliers

DAVE JOHNSON POSTGAME REPORT

7:24 AM EST…Dave Johnson ready for a new day…..Antawn Jamison is coming back for the first time since he sprained his  right shoulder in the pre-season win over Cleveland…..Randy Foye–who sprained his ankle in Miami–is at least back practicing ..Gilbert Arenas noted yesterday that the Wizards have been a slow-starting team since he has been here—and he is right—but every season is different and this slow start is both perplexing and explainable. It is somewhat  perplexing because we just did not expect–even with injuries–the Wizards to struggle on offense as much as they have. But it is also explainable with the Wizards trying to get used to playing with each other while facing some stiff competition…Not making excuses here but I think that opening night when over the Mavericks had us thinking the transition to a new offense was on the fast track…Saturday against the Pistons was better on offense but turnovers in the fourth quarter tripped up the Wizards….Arenas and Caron Butler’s shooting will improve…..and I think Flip Saunders has done a good job of  keeping things on an even keel especially with a team that was so eager to start the season but instead is trying to work through a slow start……let’s really make the BLOG jump tonight—-BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 7:oo PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link to listen on the computer…..

5:55 PM…Dave and Glenn checking in….No Shaquille O’Neal or Anderson Varejao tonight because of injuries…..but still lots to be concerned with including Cavaliers 3-point shooting…..Antawn Jamison will start and Randy Foye is going to give it a go……Wizards have won four straight at Verizon Center against Cavaliers and the BLOGCAST opens with highlights of the dramatic ends of the last gtwo Wizards home wins against Cavaliers and then Flip Saunders comments…hope you join us…

I really think we can get a win tonight. I won’t be able to watch the first half because I’ll be at a banquet but I’m feeling good tonight! Let’s get it Wiz!

there would be no better a team to beat than the cavs. i’d love to see a win tonight. but the wizards are going to have to play much better than they have lately for that to happen.

i’m not expecting a win, but i’m not going to resort to counting them out either; they have a chance. we’ll have to see how the return of jamison impacts the team’s performance. one things for sure, a 20 and 10 guy returning can only help the team. (mabye unless his name is zach randolph)

BIG THUMBS UP for ‘Dray.

slow starts were an eddie jordan thing. i really can’t accept it with the group this time around.

other teams with key injuries still win (except new jersey), so i’m disturbed with how things occurred for the wizards.

shaq or no shaq; good refs or not – this is the turning point game. the wiz lost the one in cleveland when that shouldn’t have happened. it was that loss that got them into a 6 game in-a-row slump.

i’ll be watching with a cautious eye tonight.

its going to be fun to see how we use Dray and Twan i don’t think you can leave Dray on the bench for very long and Twan is well a 20 & 10 guy wonder if we play both at the same time what about 4-5 or 3-4 could one play the 3 ?

Comment from SportzWiz

Fyi – The cavs will be without Varejao as well as Shaq, also Jamario Moon might not play for the cavs.

Comment from Jaba
Time November 18, 2009 at 1:02 PM

Having AJ and Foye back should give us an enormous boost!(Even if both of them won’t be 100% yet). Let’s start off the right way and finish the way good teams finish games! This could be the turnaround. Beating the Cavs always feels good, but a W against them tonight couldn’t come at a better time!
GOOOOOOO WIZ!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate playing teams that are missing key players. Like the last game Detroit was missing both Prince and Hamiliton and we lost. I just hope they pull it all together soon. All of the losing last season and this season and the Redskins losing is really starting to take a toll on me.

National televised game with the Wiz and Cavs it really doesn’t get any better! I will be watching the game and trying to blog from the blackberry, lol. If I am not able to blog as much, here’s to a great effort by the home team, and fun on the blogcast! And as always a big thank you to Sportzwiz, Dave and Glenn :!:

I began the season feeling that a major key for us this year, was winning the games that we are supposed to win (i.e. teams that were below .500, etc) I have now changed the locks… ;-)

Seriously,
We just need a win…the team needs it, we need it, the city needs it….Just get a win, get a foundation started, and keep it rolling…We need something new to talk about :!: :!: :!:

Back to joke time…I can’t wear a redskin jersey, I am close to not being able to wear a wiz jersey…next i’ll have to change address and my city of birth on my birth cert…lol…

Okay, ENUFF Already, Let’s do this

@ wizards_fusion

thanks. I read Foye was back at practice, so I thought he might play tonight. If he’s still out, we’ll need another strong night from Earl Boykins! Loved what he did against Detroit.

Comment from rgz
Time November 18, 2009 at 2:26 PM

I’m hoping that Earl Boykins will add some speed and penetration to our offense. It’s too bad we don’t have Paul Davis anymore as an additional big to throw at the Cavs centers. I’m not looking forward to Brendan, Dray or Mauricio fouling out just because they’re trying to stay on their feet against Shaq and Z.

mo williams is playing “way-way-way” better now than the last game between wiz and cavs. i would look out for him tonight.

arenas has always had a hard time trying to guard mo and from what i’ve seen – gil is playing less D now than before the knee injury. gil is putting too much pressure on the 2nd line for his defensive lapses. haywood is spinning in circles trying to figure out if he should step in and stop the penetrating guard that gil left alone or stay with his man.

Comment from Aj
Time November 18, 2009 at 4:18 PM

Im so excited for tonight. Twan is back, randy is back, shaq didn’t travel with the cavs, and the cavs are in town for an espn game. The losing streak starts and ends against cleveland. Can the real Agent Zero please stand up? That goes for Tuff Juice to.

Comment from gray16
Time November 18, 2009 at 4:48 PM

i wonder if caron studied the game tape. if he did, he should’ve seen how effective he was a catch and shoot player.

i think i heard somewhere that he said he doesn’t like that style of play, but it seems to like him, and his shot seems to fall when he does it.

he needs to stop hesitating and letting his man recover like he has a million times this season, either shoot or drive, not pump fake and then take the shot with his hand in his face.

i think the less amount of time he spends holding the ball, the better this team will be. if they can get him to buy into catching and shooting, he won’t spend much time with the ball, and will be able to spend more energy on rebounding and defense.

Comment from wizards_fusion
Time November 18, 2009 at 5:10 PM

since we’re complaining about caron – how about his free throws? i mean, jebus christsis.

a guy that was shooting near 90% a few years back is now as good as haywood. he’s like an 85 year old man trying to shoot free throws – no bending his knees; his back is completely erect; he uses his shoulders and elbows do all the work for the arch. it is pitiful and it needs to stop. where is dave hoopla?

kids – watch caron of old to learn how to shoot free throws (better yet – watch ray allen). don’t follow whatever laziness has gotten into caron now at the charity stripe. caron’s misses are a result of poor to atrocious technique. gil, on the other hand, is just missing them.

deshawn not shaking hands, hehe.

Great job, we really needed that win. Down 20pts in the first Q, then we toughened up the D. More assists, better ball movement (less turnovers). Miller, Boykins, Jamison (offence)..and Haywood and Deshawn (defence)…great games. Freethrow shooting 88%…huge factor!

Now don’t let this be like the game against Dallas. KEEP UP THE ENERGY! REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED!

Imagine if Gilbert and Caron would have been hot tonight..wow!
Now we just gotta hope Mr. Zero finds back to his “old” self, and we’re good to go.

i can only imagine how frustrated gilbert is right now.

and i can only imagine how hard he is going to hit the gym and work on that jumper. arenas is one of the hardest working guys in the league, he just needs motivation. i think this game just gave it to him. i think seeing boykins out there at the end of the game instead of him might help as well. hopefully he will take on this challenge and become the shooter he once was.

Comment from Wizards4Life

sorry i did not blog tonight been sick an this game was just what we needed and Caron started to hit at the end AJ and Gil on the bench other players pulled it out and HAYWOOD is now my hero that guy can ball DS just came in a put in work on LBJ total team effort.. this is the team that we take to the playoffs

Comment from datonypony
Time November 18, 2009 at 10:50 PM

gray you are correct. Gil really needed that, watching someone else playing the point guard and doing better than him. The wizards used 3 players as point guards tonight, Gil, Boykins, and miller for aorund 2-3 minutes.

Comment from datonypony

D-steve came in and killed lebron except for those 2 HUGE dunks. And then lebron hurt himself from frustration? Their next opponents should thank us. It was so funny watching Earl BOykins killing west, williams etc.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 18, 2009 at 10:53 PM

Couldn’t watch the game :( — but I’ve recorded it! :) But I travel at 6am tomorrow, so no time to watch it; got to get ready :( but I’ll watch it when I get back in a few days :)

We dominated the boards, leading to 6 more shots on basket than the Cavs and 20 (!) more FTs — you’re usually going to win a game like that.

Looks like *excellent* games from Antawn, Brendan and Mike — and great minutes from DeShawn as well.

Hey we’re 3 and 0 in the games we’ve won! How about that. Forget those other ones.

Comment from datonypony
Time November 18, 2009 at 10:55 PM

Tom, you will be killing yourself the first quarter and half of the 2nd quarter but from the flip timeout leading to the back to back Miller threes it gets GOOD!

Comment from Wiz_HypeMan
Time November 18, 2009 at 10:59 PM

I love the win tonight but we have to play hard all the time. We can’t just play good basketball on one team. You don’t go to the playoffs with a few wins on the hated Cavs each year. We have to go hard on the whole NBA. Good game by DS but LBJ is not overrated. He is the face of the NBA like it or not. DS has to help this team play hard every game. If we move the ball around to the open guy, we are dangerous.

Comment from maggicman11

good that we pulled this one out but the wiz need to realize they are not always gona be able to dig themselves out of holes. they cant start games as sloppy as thy did this one or they will lose more than thy win. we MUST improve shooting.

Comment from dlts20
Time November 18, 2009 at 11:06 PM

we are going to be super deadly when Gil finds his rythm and when we can get all 5 guys involved at once. Right now with the starting lineup, we run the pick & rolls with Gil & Twan or Gil & Wood, and Caron gets phased out. Its like he doesnt touch the ball. We have to get that straight.

Its great now because forever we have only really had the big 3 who could score until last year. Then last year we had some guys like NY but we were injuried. Now pretty much everyone can score and everyone is use to playing big minutes and getting shots so it takes awhile to get that chemistry. With all the guys we have now, a guy like Caron may go 5 straight possesions without touching the rock and 8 straright without a shot. Then mentaly he knows he may not see it again so he forces it when he does get it. Thats the same for everyone on our roster right now.

We’ll get it though. We just have to find that groove because the D has been good and the talent is off the charts

Apart from that abysmal defensive effort against Detroit the other day our defense has improved. A’lot.

Wow Guys What a Game!

Deshawn sure looks a lot better when he plays “with a purpose” instead of going out there jacking up 3’s. He really frustrated Lebron tonight and Lebron let it show. If he doesn’t have fractured bones in his left wrist it wasn’t for his lack of trying. That “frustration dunk” may just cost him. If Deshawn can forget about everything else and just lock his man down like he did tonight he will again be a huge asset to us. (Ya gotta love that “play” being called a jump ball and not the foul it would have been in Cleveland :) )

Boykins shouldn’t really surprise us. He has killed us every time he played against us. And he did it with multiple teams and multiple times. His quickness and handle drove Cleveland’s guards half nuts. He is a great change of pace for the other team to have to deal with.

Haywood, Miller, Antawn and Blatche (although he didn’t play much tonight) have been very very solid. A great base to work from until the others get their Swagger back like Deshawn got his back tonight.

Welcome back Twan. We really missed you.

GO WIZARDS (!)

I really liked the idea of using different defensive stoppers coupled with a double-team from either Haywood or Blatche on LeBronze. I realize that he got his 30+, but I was at the game and you could just see that it drove him crazy to be doubled on almost every possession. I thought that Caron did a good job early on James and then DeShawn earned his money late in the game (DewShawn’s block for a jump ball on a James dunk attempt was great).

Everyone chipped in tonight. Caron actually got an assist on a nice pass for a ‘Dray dunk. CB also finally started to hit his shots. It looks as though Coach Saunders is providing CB more room to operate when he gets the ball which helps him to get into his rhythm.

AJ demonstrated how “key” he is to the success of this team. Everytime we needed a basket or a big play, he got it.

We were down 15 and Miller almost single-handidly dragged us back into the game in the second quarter, even though it is obvious that the guy is in terrible pain with that left shoulder.

Earl provided a great spark in the 3rd/4th quarters on offense and ‘Dray was in the right place at the right time every time on defense. He stopped the inside game and was a great influence on the double-teams of #23.

I really believe, and sincerely hope, that Gil is on his way back. He’s still pressing and trying to make up 10 point deficits with one shot or one spectacular pass, but his shot looks better and he’s going to the basket strong. He is a much greater asset at the 2-spot when he doesn’t have to try to get others involved and just lets the game come to him.

All-in-all it was a GREAT win tonight.
Thanks Wiz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gabbo I think that will decide what we really have this season. If Gil plays Gil Ball and just enjoys the game and lets it come to him and stops all this pressing nonsense his Swagger will come back. Remember it’s been a long time since he has seen the court in “game time” minutes. He is still getting his feet wet. Once he feels comfortable again he will be “our guy”. His turnovers…. over his career…. are uncharateristic. He has to get his “head” back from what it lost over the last two seasons.

It’s early in the season and we are just about to have a full compliment of players. So much time left… so much time to gel and kick some NBA butt :)

@GrifonRacing – Agreed.

I’m probably late to the dance and most of you have already seen this, but for those who have not

It is really funny.

Some observations:

– I was at the game so I don’t know if the ESPN or Comcast guys talked about it – but, did anyone notice Gilbert changed his shoes at halftime because he was having a terrible first half? He started out with black shoes and came out in second half with white shoes. Superstitions never change.

– Earl Boykins weighs 160 lbs, but he can bench press twice his weight at 320 lbs! I find it funny that Mo Williams tried to post up on him and Earl’s feisty enough to not give that much ground to him – he gave Mo the height – yes, but ground – no.

– Caron got a bunch of garbage points late in the game. It seems like he has a big problem on the offensive end when he has to play defense on a player better than him. I’ve noticed this now for the last 4 seasons. Marion, Pierce, LBJ – their offense takes Butler’s offense away.

– I’m waiting for the Cavs fans to b***h about the free throw disparity. It was like 17 attempts to 5 at the half for Wiz. The end was 35 to 15 attempts for WAS. Both teams shot really well from the line. I was impressed.

– On Jamison – just a big WOW!

– LeBron got his dunks and drives to the basket as usual; however, I thought the most impressive slam was the Jamario Moon “cradle the ball” from a LeBron pass. Wow – I thought he was Larry Nance for a second.

– There were a lot of “Cavs” fans (I put Cavs in quotation marks because we all know they’re just LeBron fans) at the game. Nothing is sweeter than having them being silenced with 4 minutes to go in the game.

How sweet it is.

Jamison must have an effect on the guys apart from what he personally contributes.

Cleveland looked disjointed in the 2nd half – probably tired.

I was content not seeing Oberto, but wish I had seen McGee.

Blatche looked good in limited minutes.

We still have work to do on D.

I like the way Miller hustles.

wizards fusion, if any cavs fans are crying about calls they need to watch the game over again.

it’s hard to get calls when all they are doing is shooting jumpshots, if they need an example just look at previous wizards games this season.

even lebron was settling for jumpers, that’s when the cavs are at their worst. anyone remember the first game against the season against the celtics? exact same thing happened, they got sucked into jumpshots.

I listened to ESPN rather than the radio, just to see what the “outside” world had to say. They mentioned Gil changing his “tights”, I believe that’s what they said…lol…

anyhoot, they really didn’t bash our team, their criticism was constructive (imo) and they gave us a thumbs up once we get it all together.

They did say that it will probably take all year for Gil to get everything back to like it was, prior to the injuries.

One game at a time ladies and gents, one game at a time, let’s take our city back ;-)
