Game Day Pistons
8:00 AM EST…Dave Johnson checking in…..it is sounding more and more like Mike Miller is going to be able to play tonight. We will update you with more after the shoot around. Antawn Jamison would be all set to go as well but he has been fighting an illnesss the last couple of days so we will have to wait and see. The addition of Earl Boykins is so important especially with the Pistons in town since they often play with more of a three-guard lineup. I would not expect Randy Foye to be able to play but certainly think it’s possible that we see him some time this week. And here we go with another game and hope for improvement on offense. It is almost ironic that we are worried about scoring and are in praise of the defense. Leaving injuries aside, which has certainly disrupted things, the Wizards look like they are taking time to adjust to a new offense. To Flip Saunders credit, he does not seem to be the least bit troubled by the injuries. Oh he wants a healthy team but he has experience in adjusting on the fly dating back to his days in the old CBA when he often didn’t know who he would be coaching because of NBA call-ups and players leaving to go overseas.BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 7:oo PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link to listen on the computer…..
1:29 PM UPDATE…Mike Miller is probable..so we should see him tonight….Antawn Jamison is still battling an illness….shoulder is okay…was not at shoot around..but with him you never know so I would call it game time decision…..and Randy Foye should be out but don’t be surprised if he is back for Cleveland on Wednesday
5:40 PM…..UPDATE No Antawn Jamison tonight…and no Randy Foye but Mike Miller will play…..Pistons will be without Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince…
6:35 PM…starters are in….Pistons will go with Rodney Stuckey and Ben Gordon in the back coirt Ben Wallace….Jonas Jerebko and Charlie Villanueva are the forwards….Wizards will go with Gilbert Arenas and Mike MIller in the back court ..Brendan Haywood is the center and Andray Blatche and Caron Butler are the forwards.

I know it will be tough for him coming off an injury, but Mike Miller needs to show some scoring agression tonight. Maybe it will keep Gil and Caron from taking so many bad out of rythm shots that have been killing our offense all season.

Its so funny how the Wiz are so cursed that we are supposed to get a now healthy AJ back for this game but he may not play due to him being so sick recently. Him & Foye are game time decisions and this whole situation feels iffy to me. I thought Foye may play but now they act like he’s going to take his time. I would like to have all our guys back this game but its not a huge deal since we now have Boykins to step in. You then have Miller who is bent on coming back but he says his shoulder is still sore. I went from wanting all 3 of those guys to play until now thinking that all 3 should sit until the Cavs game.
Either way this season still comes down to Gil for me and its all about his speed & pace. Basicaly from the opening tip I can always tell if he’s going to play a great game, an average game, or a horrible boring game. I want to see him pick his overall game pace back up and to play with speed & burst. The good thing is that we are playing Detroit which I think is the perfect game to get Gil’s mojo going again. He usually always plays good against them but he also usually kills Indy & the Suns and sucked this year. The difference though is that Detroit has Bynum at guard and Gil ususally always tries to go off against guys who went to Arizona like him. He also worked out with Gil all summer so I think Gil will be aggressive. He had his best game and most aggressive game of the Preseason against them so I think he will try to play fast and do that again. I also think he will be boosted by having his friend Boykins out there and will want to put on a show for him and sometimes side by side with him.
Again, he’s the most important thing to me. We will be a bad team with Gil playing slow and with us injuried. We will be a solid team with Gil playing slow and us healthy. We will be a very good team with Gil playing fast and us injuried. We will be a great team with Gil playing fast and us healthy. If he plays fast then I could see him putting up crazy numbers this game and looking like he did against the Mavs. If he plays slow then it will be another close game that we could lose, healthy or not

We have a lot of players still trying to get adjusted to playing with each other on a daily basis. It takes time. It doesn’t help w/ the injuries.
And tonight we are adding another player w/ Boykins. So, it will be another adjustment period tonight.
The Wizards are still a tough team no matter who we put out there. I expect a win tonight!!!

Looking forward to tonight’s win against the Pistons. I believe we will see Jamison tonight, even if he is not 100% he will give the team a much needed boost of confidence. Also I expect Boykins to have a great debut in the phone booth, and will become a fan favorite. Miller in the line up should also help, I am glad Randy will take one game off tonight so he can be 100% in the next game.

Well i wont say that the wiz suck, but I will say this about the Wiz and every other Team in every sport; like Bill Parcells said, “You Are What Your Record Says You Are”. you dont see the celtics starting 2-6 or the lakers or denver or orlando. they are what their record says they are… GOOD!
So what does our record say about us? Well, we’re not good. And until something different happens we wont be. we can have gil back and have a deep roster and a great coach, but who cares if our record says we are a bad team? NO ONE!
I have one quote left in me.. If a man wants something he never had before, he’s got to do something he’s never done before. this team can take that to heart. we arent gona get anywhere but where we have been unless we do something different. Gil will have to be different. He will have to actually run this team like a true pg, dare i say it. He will have to be a leader and not force shots and try to take games over like kobe and lebron, but manage the game and make the entire team better like nash, or paul.

Oh well no Twan, I guess he and Foye will be available for the next game. Which is still good news, man what is the over\under on this team being at 100% healthy? It would just be great to see all of the players in uniform, and watch Flip do his thing? I guess it will take almost 30 games (at the earliest) too see what we have in this team? I do not by into a curse, not at all.

First jumper off by Arenas, nice steal on the defensive end. Hopefully we will stay agressive driving to the basket, and playing inside\out basketball….And as I have stated since the season has started, look at the team assists, we have to have a goal of 20+, if we can get to 25 we should win, less than 20 we will lose.

I’m liking how the Wizards are grabbing offensive rebounds right now, but it is looking like they are allowing too many 2nd chance opportunities for the Pistons, especially down low in the paint…..I also like Blatche’s hustle right now, but he needs to do a better job at guarding Villanueva’s 3 point shot, and not depend on the help defense to provide good coverage!

but this backcourt combo of boykins and gil is just giving up too many points. you can’t win trading baskets after already having a deficit.

jeffmalone, i HATE the term true pg, just saying.
imo there is no such thing. every great pg forever has played differently.
boykins is a guy with high energy (not a great passer), but can hit shots when you need him too. like a mini jameer nelson.

If Haywood continues with his numbers that he has been averaging all season, I honestly see him as being a potential reserve for the All-Star Team but only and ONLY if the Wizards get up to a winning record by the All-Star break…..I also see Blatche as being a candidate for most improved as well, what do you guys think?
Comment from gray16
Time November 14, 2009 at 9:05 PM
from what i’ve seen from boykins over the years, he’s not a great passer, and he’s not a great on ball defender.
he can hit an open man with a pass, but he’s not going to have those passes that lead to very easy baskets, more ones that keep the ball moving.
and defensively he’s never been good. he’s pesky, but not good. he’s like a nat, gets on your nerves, but you’re able to kill him (score on him) easily.

DcButler: What about Arenas? You know he will be considered if the Wizards get to a winning record and he keeps his turnovers down (which probably wont happen because he tends to turn the ball over a lot)…..he is averaging close to the same numbers as he averaged when he was an all-star

Comment from dcbutler357

@gray16-your points are valid, however the Boykins\Arenas combo is the best the Wizards have, and I would rather the guards from the opposing teams launh jumpers than give up drives to the basket. And when they play (Gil\Boykins) you have to have a shot blocker in Haywood and Dray (McGee) with them.
However the upside with Gil and Boykins far exceed the negatives
Comment from gray16

i hope the wiz noticed when caron was posting up, he was attracting a lot of attention. that’s what feeding the post does, and caron already having a reputation he’s going to draw doubles.
the couple of times they fed him, they wound up with the pistons catching up on defense after leaving a man open.
caron can be that post guy for the wizards, because haywood and blatche sure can’t be that guy.

i’m definitely not going to give boykins credit for arenas hitting those shots. i think the only shot gil hit off of a boykins pass was that last one, and all the credit goes to gil for that shot, imo.
the reason gil did better in that second quarter is because like jeffmalone said, he’s more effective at the sg position right now.
as far as the upside outweighing the bad side, the only way we will know that is by seeing wins starting to happen. if they do, then you’re absolutely right.
Comment from dcbutler357

It kind of boils down to knowing what your players can/can’t do and not asking them to do otherwise. I would rather have a close defensive gamewith non-scorers in the game playing D, than seeing a run/gun team throwing up bricks and going on mini runs, but never being in the game…..that being said, STOP letting V shoot those threes like he’s Steve Kerr!!!

like i said, the only way i like that backcourt combo is if wins happen, and so far 0-1
it’s a matter of trying to outscore the other team when you have that backcourt, and if they can’t outscore the pistons, they aren’t going to outscore a lot of teams.
can’t win without defense. the wizards team tonight reminded me of the 07 wizards. the ones that had no defense and relied on their offense to carry them.
of course if butler could actually score and jamison was in there, it might work then.

WE DO NOT HAVE A BIG THREE, STOP ACTING LIKE IT…..Caron does not cut it. DMac has more energy and can recover on D better. Why keep these players on the team if you not going to play them…..this is pathetic. Ernie, I think you need to make some more changes, injuries or not, a player should not come in off the street and make youthat much better. dcbutler, you can’t ignore his days in minnesota. he took a bad team to an amazing team.
and in detroit he made that team have it’s best record with that group. if you think a bad coach can take a good team and keep it having success, just ask michael curry, that’s not how it works.
flip is a good coach, he just has to find his way in washington. it even takes great coaches like larry brown to adapt to team.

and i can’t blame boykins for the much better play. of course the offense was better, (even though that had a big part to do with miller just as much as boykins), but everyone played their part to keep this game close.
and boykins is a verteran. he’s not just some guy off the street. and it’s going to take more than one game for me to say this addition was a good one. we could’ve blown the pistons out and i would still be reserving judgement. at this point i would say it was a good signing, but not a great one.

5 Quick Thoughts!
1- This was the 1st time all year where I thought we looked like an EJ team on Defense, espicaly regarding that pick & roll. We never figured out how to stop Bynum from getting in the lane but alot of it maybe due to Boykins being new and not really knowing our defensive system.
2- Earl was great but the 1 thing that he did bad was forget about Gil in the 2nd half. I knew Gil would become hot after that 3 at the end of the half. Then Gil comes out in the 2nd half with 2 more quick 3’s and Flip subsituted Miller for Boykins. I still dont know why he did that so early after Miller himself just hit 1 or 2 threes and he didnt pick up a foul. Earl then came in and played great but Gil really never touched the ball again until the very end of the game. Ive never seen that happened. Everytime we came down court, Gil would be on one side and our O would go to the opposite side. I thought that was bad because Gil may have been ready to go off. We still just have to find our groove with all the new guys.
3- DS took NY’s spot but I hope to GOD that Flip just let Boykins take DS’s spot. DS has been horrible. He’s only playing for D because everything else has been horrible but the thing is that his D stil isnt that great. I just love the thought of us starting the big 3 with MM & Wood and then coming off the bench with Boykins, Foye, Blatche, and Oberto. Thats a great 9 man rotation. It also allows Foye to move back to his normal spot at the 2. I think that keeps us explosive on each unit.
4- I really like Flip but I am starting to get really worried about what the Pistons fans told me all offseason. They said that you would win alot of games in the regular season but you have no chance to win in the Post Season because the system is designed for all jump shots and thats why they always get eliminated. They said that its even magnified in the playoffs because youre playing against the best defensive teams which means you shoot all J’s and alot of them are now contested.
5- This one is the biggest and kind of plays off of #4. For the life of me I cant put my finger on it but the #1 problem by far I have with our team right now is the pick & roll or high screen on Offense. Its terrible and makes Gil just an ordinary player. I talked about this a hundred times in the Preseason and early this season. Is anyone paying attention to this? Gil is like the best player in the league with this or right up there with Wade and the other guys but Flip runs it seemingly different than every team in the league. Flip seems like he doesnt really design it for the ball handler to score or instantly drive. He moreso designs it for the guard to get trapped and then swing it. I hate that so much because thats always been our #1 play. Either the 4 or 5 sets the screen, Gil goes super hard & tight off there butt, and then he’s one on one with the big in the middle of the lane. He’s either going to score, draw the foul, or dish to an open shooter every time. Thats what Wade lives off and we use to do it all the time with EJ. Flip doesnt do that. Half the time the big leaves before he even really sets the screen and the other half of the time, the guard never gets tight with the big. That means the D can shut it down so many ways. Half the time the PG can get easily back in front of Gil. The other half the trap Gil and make him go way wide. Gil never gets to attack it down the pipe anymore. He always just ends up a few fight to the side still one on one with the PG or he’s forced 20 feet sideways. I hate it. Because of that Gil hardly ever gets in the lane anymore and when he does, its always something forced so it never works. It will no doubt be better with AJ back and we have that elite scorer and a big who can space the floor so they cant trap as easily but stil

LOL….DENIAL will keep us in the cellar. BOYKIN came in OFF THE STREET and ran a team that DOES NOT have an offense in place…UNLESS it’s run and gun…LOL….
WE put too much faith in some of these players that we continuously lose with. I will say it for the rest of the year, THE BIG THREE FROM 2006/2007 whatever is over, time to play TEAM ball. Right now, i’m seeing mis-management. How long do you have to get used to the other 13/14 players when this man just came in the other day, and played basic basketball, to improve our chances. AND played more minutes than the bench players combined…Make any excuse you want, the proof is in the pudding. I’m tired of the BS excuses, put the best five players and combos on the court and go win a dam game already GEEEZ!!!

Im also glad to see Gil go back to Agent 0. Thats one big worry I had coming into the year. I definatly wanted him to be more serious like Lebron, Wade, Kobe and others but I didnt want him to be so serious that he’s wound up all the time and doesnt celebrate anymore. I always think about Sean Taylor. I think it was his 3rd year. He was a beast the first 2 years and I remember thinking how the 3rd year is when you really see guys take the jump and he’s going to be a monster. Well our whole D sucked that year and one thing that always stood out to me was that he was acting totally different. Just like Gil, I loved the fact that he was maturing, watching film now, and taking the game way more serious but then there’s a point where you draw the line. He always celebrated after big hits and get excited. That year he would just always not do anything and have a regular look on his face after a big play and walk back to the huddle. I honestly think it hurt his play. The next year he again celebrated after great plays and was jumping up & down and started to dominate again. Thats why I like Gil going back to Hibachi. You can still keep all the scouting things and not being friendly with guys on the court because that helps but you also have to be yourself and if you have an outgoing personality then you shouldnt lose that

@dlts-1000% agree with your posts, the game is played with passion and emotion. And the team and Arenas are far more dangerous when he is having fun and playing with emotion. The fans and the players feed off it, and that is how (IMO) he can lead. Agent Zero, just do what got you that amazing contract and we will be ok

I’m sure that when some folks look at the box score they will conclude that Gilbert is improving; after all, he only had 2 turnovers. However, Gilbert is losing game after game for the Wiz with his non-existent defense. There is probably no guard in the NBA who doesn’t lick his chops when he brings the ball down the court and sees “0″ defending him. Gilbert doesn’t even pretend to be interested in stopping his man…he lets him go right by and hopes that some “big” will pick him up. Certainly the Pistons scored on 3 pointers (come on Charlie give us a break!), but the easy scores happened when Gil’s man went around him and drove the basket, or dumped it off for an easy shot.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would suggest this, but Flip, let Gil come off the bench for a few games. Maybe in addition to developing a little humility and team-play, he might decide to spend some enegry on “D”.
BTW, Gil’s lack of turnovers is only because Flip took the ball out of his hands and gave it to Earl.

@dcbutler357 – Word!
You have nailed it.
The thing is…I still think we have an excellent team. What we need is a quick hitting post player, or a player who can step-back and hit the long jumper…does #4 come to mind?
If AJ returns and we continue to lose, we are in serious jeopardy.

I want to make a suggestion. When any of our “bigs” jump out to protect against the pick-and-roll, they have to PLEASE stop the ball. Right now they are simply running out at the ball handler and then retreating as fast as possible to catch up to the “picker”…forget that, STOP THE BALL, someone else is responsible for the “picker”, that’s what rotations are all about.

as i said, we are what our record says we are.. a very bad team.. the question is why. if you think its cuz we dont have jamison your sadly mistaken. our team doesnt match up well with our system. Gil has become a liability with his selfish play. deshawn gives nothing more than oberto. nick cant buy minutes.. mcgee cant get more minutes than oberto??… and our best defender keeps our bench nice and toasty throughout the games. this is not going to be a playoff team

Yeh great game…this team will never win a championship with gilbert …it is not about talent but about court smarts and his intelligence of the game. When gil is in the ball movement quits , too often is out of control, and he is not disciplined enough to close out games. This was true when he was healthy as well. Look at the difference when Boykins or Foye for that matter is in there. In fact the team does not flow well without Miller. For the first 8 games Gil refused to get him the ball. The guy goes 7 for 11 and is hitting over 50% of his 3’s and gil takes his normal 22-25 shots and only makes a third of them if he is lucky. There are better shooters and team players than gil on this team and I hope he soon realizes that….otherwise I hope coach sits him like he did tonite . Great to have AJ back right now his is the best overall player on this team closely followed by Miller.
