Game Day Miami
5:24 AM…Dave Johnson checking in from Miami….to cut to the chase the Wizards need to have less one-on-one play and more ball movement if they are to have a chance at success down here…Miami is always a tough place to play and at 5-1 the Heat are playing as a team….In he last three games the Wizards have turned the ball over 61 times and only had 58 assists. That is not how that ratio is supposed to work and in large part that explains why things are not working right now for the Wizards. The encouraging sign is that even with the injuries to Antawn Jamison and Mike Miller– there is the talent to still have success and in hearing the players talk they understand what needs to be done….so I guess it is just do it—-that could end up as a marketing slogan–nah it’s too simple…But it will be important because the Heat are tough on defense and they will press the Wizards……Randy Foye says one way to play Dwyane Wade is to also attack him and make him work on the defensive end….in other words do to him what he likes to do to others..and Flip Saunders notes it is important to try and limit Wade’s touches if that is possible and then also put him a position where you can help on defense.BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 7:30 PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link to listen on the computer…..
UPDATE: SportzWiz checking in…The 2009-10 All-Star ballot came out today and three Wizards were named on the Ballot, Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler…For more Click here.
6:17 PM…Dave and Glenn checking in GILBERT ARENAS IS A QUESTION MARK.. with a sore calf …it is not serious…could play update you as we have it….Andray Blatche will start tonight instead of Fabricio Oberto who will come off the bench.
6:48 PM Starting lineup update..Arenas is out with a strained left calfit will be Randy Foye and DeShawn Stevenson in the back court..Brendan Haywood in the middle and Caron Butler and Andray Blatche at the forwards
7:32 PM CHHH CHANGES…ARENAS IS OIUT THERE AND WILL PLAY……Heat will go with Wade Chalmers Jermaine O Neal Quentin Richardson and Michael Beasley

i say start dray, and have butler coming off the bench. i know it sounds crazy but butler hasn’t been playing well lately, so the wiz need to shake things up. then the wiz can start dominic and nick young, with gil, blatche, and haywood, with butler, foye, deshawn, and oberto coming off the bench.
with nick on the floor, the wizards offense is going to be moving either way, and have nick guarding q rich, and have dom guarding wade to start the game. if the wizards’ defense isn’t working properly, just substitute in deshawn and/or butler.
i don’t know, just an idea that popped into my head, but i’m pretty sure butler wouldn’t go for it, but he needs to do something to get his game going.
i hope dominic sees some playing time tonight, after that good performance against the suns, he’s a hustle player and can get those rebounds, and some of the passes the team is missing without mike miller.

Butler off the bench? no that’s a very bad idea. he’s the second best player on the team. one of the best shooters, one of the best defenders. Bad Ida.
as far as nick young. He looks lost every minute he’s on the floor.

seems like a case of deja vu from last year, guys getting hurt and unproven young guys coming in not knowing what to do… let’s try and get healthy soon so we can start competing with the eastern elite

butler will not be coming off the bench. that’s silly. however, he does need to up his 0.7 assists per game. that is horrible and way out of character for Caron.
i think having Gil back has really thrown Caron off his game. Caron watches Gil hog the ball and chuck up contested shots and thinks, well I guess that I better do the same. it doesn’t help when Foye comes in to spell arenas and chucks up just as many early-in-the-shot-clock contested jumpers.
i like Haywood’s aggressiveness on the boards, but with him too, you know that anytime he catches the ball in the post, he is gonna shoot.
So what is the solution? It all starts with Gil. He needs to focus more on setting up his teammates without losing his aggressiveness and scorer’s mentality. Basically he needs to take fewer bad shots but not necessarily fewer shots.
And Flip has to play Haywood and Oberto together less. With both of them on the floor at once, it clogs up the driving lanes for Gil and Caron and gives us 2 guys who can’t hit a shot beyond 10ft.
Unfortunately it is hard for us to resolve that issue. If Dray is already playing 30+ minutes at the 4, then who else? McGuire – he also can’t shoot? Caron – he is definitely undersized for a 4, but may be the best option.

interesting that Mike James just came down with a hand injury. i think Paul Davis might be able to give some valuable minutes at the 4.

arenas has to learn how to set up players, which ones to set up, where different players like the ball, and when to shoot, basically how to be a control pg. he’s a scoring point by nature, so it’s going to take time for him to learn this way, but hopefully it doesn’t take too long.
but even at that, there have been many times he has set up butler, and butler hasn’t come through. butler’s poor bball iq, mixed together with a slump = disaster. luckily his great rebounding has allowed him to get more points, as well as his great stealing ability. but butler is going to need to learn to let his game come to him, and find a go to move so that he can be more effective in the game.
i still think nick should get some minutes tonight though, because on any given night he can get 15+ points. if he’s not playing well sub him out.
dominic should get some minutes as well for defensive purposes. foye on wade spells disaster, and deshawn won’t be able to play all 36+ minutes of the time wade will be on the court.

I like the idea of starting Dray, either way I hope he continues his strong play.
I don’t ever see Caron coming off the bench. He can get hot at times in the game and seem unstoppable. He just has to get his jumper falling again and his confidence will be back.
He also has to take care of the ball and not try to force the ball in tight spots and if he turns the ball over hustle back on defense. That is basketball 101, when you turn the ball over you need to be the first person hustling back on D.

i agree with gray.. foye is not known for his defense, and we know how good deshawn and dominic are on defense.. i say start deshawn and let foye come off the bench.
any word on how much longer miller and jamison will be out?
Comment from dcbutler357

I think the point being made about Caron’s excessive playing time is that he’s not playing team ball, not that he isn’t any good….us talking about what he needs to do is the reason why he needs to ride the pine a lil, AND figure out how to display his skills, in conjunction with team play….IMO
Figure it out and win one, PLEASE
We don’t have any other teams that have a chance this year!!!!!

Hmmmmm, I will say this with a heavy heart, but Miller and Jamison being out is a major problem, but it’s not the problem, in itself. It reminds me when EJ was coach and said “our offense is centered around Gil, and since he’s injured….”. Stop focusing on who’s in/out/upside down/etc. Get plays that work with the players we have on the bench, play the correct players that will work for the system and let’s go!!! All these dang excuses….good conversation, but the season is here now….dlts20, you’re on the bench calling the O, and subbing the players

since when do players have guaranteed starting spots or minute minimums? if a player is not giving you the best chance at winning then go with the player who does. no matter if its between oberto and Dray or caron and dom. there is no question about who is better between butler and dom. Butler hands down. but does that necessarily mean he gives you the best chance at winning with the other players on the floor? if dom can slow wade down better than anyone else on our team (which he can) then why not play him more when we play teams he can excel against? with gil, foye or slick, and blatche in the game we have scoring. we need defense. we cant exchange baskets the whole game. we have to slow wade down.
if you look at when we struggle the most, its when we have 3 wing players who are great scorers and two inside guys who are terrible scorers. it makes the wing guys all try to overcompensate. to wing scores and a D guy and one inside scorer and a D guy is when we are successful.
Comment from gray16

one thing i said in the preseason, after jamison went out, is this team is lacking an offensive post presence. i said if this team didn’t get someone to fill that void, then this team would become a jump shooting team, and lately, that is exactly what this team has been.
like maggicman said, when you have two big guys who can’t score inside playing with 3 wing players, the 3 wing players are going to try to compensate, and that usually = jump shooting; unless you have a wing player like melo, kobe, etc who can post up.
i think that’s what the wizards need right now, a 1,2, or 3 who can post up and score in the post. and i think the guy who should do it is caron butler. every year for the past 3 years caron has migrated further and further away from the basket with his shots. last season, he at times would just jack threes. this season he’s just taking contested long range twos (the worst shot in the game).
so i think caron should take time to redevelop his post game. there is absolutely no reason why caron shouldn’t be able to abuse q rich in the post. plus with caron’s great rebounding, being closer to the rim, he can get second chance shots as well. i think doing this would not only allow him to get a rhythm, but also the entire offense.

Lets go Wizards!! We could use this game as a confidence booster if we win. I hate losing to teams in our own division. I’m also tired of people killing me for saying the wizards were going to be very good this year. If Gilbert wants to know the right way to play pg he should watch steve nash. Last night he had 20 and 20 against the sixers and it was amazing. Nash finds the right balance in his attack scoring and assisting. It would help if Gil had antawn and mike in the lineup to pass to though.

Ok here is my opinion on the team this far:
1. Caron is not the problem-CB3 is an all star player in the elite NBA, and he just like Gil are pressing a tad bit on offense and defense. I agree his assists stats are HORRIBLE, however as the season goes on his assists, rebounding and scoring will go up, just playing within the offense. The team is still trying to establish chemistry and in 7 games folks, they just don’t have it as of yet.
2. Assists-The two games we have won this year, the Wizards are averaging over 25 assists a game, in the five we did not about 16-18 a game. This one STAT is a very telling stat, and one to keep an eye on as the season moves forward.
3. Dray as a starter-This one is a no brainer, is it really important if Dray starts the game or is it more important if Dray is in at winning time? Dray has been great this year, and he gets his minutes and his confidence is there.
4. FG%-This comes from (or the lack of a better %) from ball movement, one on one play, and launching quick jumpers. All are a by product of trusting your teamates and chemistry. We take contested shots, and bail teams out by not going inside\out. That one concept would free up our shooters.
5. Chemistry-We have some new parts to this team, and a new coaching staff, and guys coming back from injury (this is all relative) It takes time to mesh, however at this point in the season, our record is what what are team is (to this point) however I feel at the end of the season, we will be a lot better, this is a good team, that is playing bad basketball.
Hopefully we will see a high pick n roll, with Dray and Arenas, or Foye and McGee? Or a 1-3 set with Arenas at the top of the key, or a few more double screens for our shooters.
The bench also needs to be a spark, we have not get it consistently yet, they need to come in the game establish or change tempo and bring ENERGY every night. With Dray\McGee combo, I would love to see Flip get more agressive with a trap, since you have two shot blockers in the game, speed the game up, and get some easy transition buckets.
My two cents…….And yes Wizards get the win tonight, a much needed one.

And one more thought, Gilbert go back to being Agent Zero aka Habichi that is your game and personality. The team needs it’s “swag” back and that entertainer that everyone in the NBA took notice too, picked the team, the city, fans, and most important your teamates up. At the end of the day Gil, you are what they thought you are”!
Agent Zero
We go as far as you will take this team PERIOD……..

And I like to add, all positions can post up, whether it’s Gil, Caron, Dray, whomever it doesn’t matter. You need to feed the post, and exploit match ups (much like the Suns did to us with Richardson and Hill) and milk it until the other team does something to make you change. We have to have the guards continue to feed the post, and have faith that the post will kick it back, or the post will go to the basket. Gil has an advantage tonight when Arroyo is in the game, to go to the block. You will see DWade go to the post up early in the game tonight, all an Elite player needs to get going is a few shots to go down then the rest of the game comes easy. So again lets get Gil, Dray, CB3, McGee whomever going and you will see the rest of there games pick up!

I read somewhere on nba.com that Andray Blatche has been getting really tired at the end of games and that is why Flip can’t play him major minutes. This is also why he didn’t play the last 5 minutes against the suns if everybody didn’t already know.

I think Paul Davis needs to get into the rotation. He’s a smart big that can play defense, rebound and put the ball in the basket. I understand Coach S. likes to play only 7-8 guys in the rotation, but heck, if one or two are having an off night, you got to shake things up.
Davis will put up some good numbers if he’s given the chance.

You need to feed the post, and exploit match ups (much like the Suns did to us with Richardson and Hill) – - JMalone1990
Oh, they did that to the Sixers too yesterday. That was an amazing game; Nash is Nash, Richardson was HOT and you wouldn’t even be able to tell that Hill is his age with how he’s playing – that’s amazing! I recall hearing Glenn say on the radio how amazed he is every time he sees Nash play
. That’s exactly how I feel when I see Andre Iggy play! My problems (which are very few)…but STILL – my problems are just all of a sudden behind me when seeing him play lol. It’s like…a miracle! Gotta see that team live!
What up with my man Dray? Maybe either due to two things: that gun-shot incident or just need better conditioning…or both. Dray – you gotta get better my man! And also, why have people been picking on Caron; leave Caron alone! Considering the fact that he’s had to carry this team with Tawn, of course he’ll be (as people have called him) a “ball-hog”. But I guess that every season, the fans of a team need a new person to “pick on”. A lot of things need to be considered like: is he being fed good looks, etc.

Gil looks like he cant move at all. He looks even slower than he was last year with the injury. He looks so limited. Its crazy. I hope its just the calf and not the knee and I hope he gets his speed & burst back soon. He was alright in the first 3 games but since then his pace has been horrible and his speed is so slow that it makes it seem like he’s overweight. Thats why he’s having all the turnovers. You cant play this game at half speed

It’s hard to win when you play such stupid basketball. Whenever it’s tight, Gilbert and Caron take over and the passing game dies. Gilbert is not a ball handler. We need Jamison to have some intelligence on the floor. Brendan and Andray are playing well, but the ball handling and passing and “thinking” all stink right now. Flip may have never coached a less intelligent team. It will be another looooong season unless they learn to play as a team. Getting rid of Stevenson wouldn’t hurt either.

unbelievable!!! Gil is crippling this team with his TO’s. and i havent seen a possession where oberto looks like he belongs in the game over what can be gained by either blatche or Mcgee. but gil made mental mistakes that were crucial in this game. taking the jumper on 3-on-1, throwing the ball well over dray’s head, and all his other TOs. what is going on with him? sure he’ll give u an occasional buzzer beater but he has been the cause of the losses thus far.

i don’t want to believe these things, but the more i watch the wizards, the more i believe it. and i think i’m going to believe it until this team proves me wrong. until then, let’s just hope for a win to come soon. (bad memories of last season being brought back up)

5 loses in a row is not good . If Gil claims to be one of the top guards in the league, he needs to do a better job in handling the ball. No excuse of “missing the pieces” i.e. Jamison being out. Celtics won games without Garnett and Lakers won games without Gasol. Gil can not takeover the game in the closing minutes. He expects the refs to bail him out.

Arenas, Butler, Haywood,Stevenson and Blatche all played over 38 minutes in this game, Flip this is not “acceptable”……….Young 2 min, DMAC, 8 min, McGee DNP, we needed to use all available bodies, this really must mean the coach has zero confidence in McGee, DMAC and Young!
Comment from gray16

guys, don’t fool yourselves, defense is definitely not the problem. 90 points scored by the heat, who average 98 per game is good defense, especially when the heat are getting so many points off of turnovers.
the problems were on the offensive end again, and fact is this team just isn’t a good offensive team. caron butler is not a good scorer, poor bball iq, gilbert turns the ball over too much, blatche is still inconsistent offensively, and no one else right now can score.
it’s crazy how fast this team went from great offensively and horribly defensively to the complete opposite.

If I’m Flip I change things and start Javalle with Brendon the next game.
I was hoping that Dom would get more time guarding Wade. This is one game where Dom returns to the 2-guard position. Because DeShawn’s skill level has slipped so badly, the Wiz do not lose a lot with Dom in there offensively.
Why does it seem that the other teams are allowed to be much more physical against the Wiz then vice versa?
I thought the turning point of the game was when O’Neil blundered into Brendan yet got the call – terrible. If you can’t get that call, it’s tought to win.
Too much standing around on the offensive side.
It’s good the team has a few days off.
Play Javale more! Teams fear his athleticism.

Time November 11, 2009 at 12:17 AM
The way we play offense, I have gone back to Getabigboyoffense until such time as (1) Coach Saunders realizes that Gil is much too selfish to be a distributing point guard, or (2) Gil becomes a distributing point guard. My guess is that we won’t see enough of either to make this a really good season. ..12 turnovers in a single game just doesn’t do it.
The rust will wear off and Gil and AJ will score enough points to get us into the playoffs. Of course, it would be very helpful if Caron would learn how to pass the ball.
Tonight: Butler 4 turnovers; 0 assists. That’s a total of (I believe) 3 assists in 7 games for Caron,”The ball stops here”, Butler.
So Haywood and Blatche each get a double/double and the ball hogging, jump-shooting, turnover-prone, defensively-incompetent perimeter players (that would be #s 0 and 3) are 15 for 38 from the field and 7 for 12 from the line with a combined 16 turnovers for the game.
It looked as though Caron was trying to turn it around for himself. He was aggressive and played hard, but it’s difficult to succeed when you are relying on a point guard who is more interested in scoring or making a memorable pass than just getting the ball to someone in a position where they can score.
I could not be more disappointed in the play of Gil.

When Crit gets healthy give him the keys (Rondo style) cause he’s our only true PG…
Move Gil off the ball like Ray Allen, D Wade, etc…
Sorry Gil, I love you but when I think about it (& as you are currently displaying) you’ve never really run true PG the way Flip’s O demands it.
Not at Ariz…
Not in GS (run run run)…
& not in EJ Princeton…
It’s KILLING me to say, but maybe our hero zero is a 2 guard? Maybe he is human after all & we’re asking him to be a tradition PG & that’s just flat out not what he is?
Petition anyone? JM1990 you with me?
I know we need Crit to get healthy first because he really is the only PG on our squad but… At least we can start thinking about this reality.
I think with Gil, Miller, Butler, Foye, Jamison, Blatche, etc, Crit can become a Rondo type PG in this league. He’ll have the firepower to set up, & with that sort of fire power in Flips system we’ll only need about 10 pts n night from Crit. But I guaranty he averages 10 assists as well!
With a healthy Crit:
Crit
Gil
Butler
Tawn
Haywood
1st few off the bench:
Miller
Blatche
Foye
WIZARDS!

what a sorry 2nd half. I was excited at our wizards blasting out the gate with excellent passes and crisp looking shots in the first half. We could not have been any more sloppier, especially gil.
I really think stevenson is absolutely worthless. Hes on our team to guard the DWADES, the KB24s, the brandon ROYs in the NBA, yet he lets dwade drop 81 points in 2 games against us
if hes on our team for his “defense”, we dont need him, especially with his horrid FT shooting, inconsistent jumper, horrible handles. hes just the worst starter in the NBA

@M2-sign me up, I am with you! This is no knock on Gilbert, it is just putting him in spots too be effective. Critt is out best option at running this offense, he can just focus on assists and on the ball deffense. And the once in a blue moon jumper and a quick drive too the basket! Yes sir I am 100% with you!
Gilbert is a scoring guard, who at times can pass! So let him do what he does best, score the basketball, and let him move without the ball!

So we pick up the options on McGee and Young and yet they play spot minutes? What are we doing with these young guys? Lets cut to the chase. Blatche and Haywood are playing much better than anticipated. The main problem (60% but not all) is Gilbert. He has been terrible. 12 TOs!!! He shoots first passes second and his defense is pathetic. He should be benched until he can get his head in the game. The way he is going he is another World B. Free or Reggie Theus. Steve Kerr was laughing when i screamed Gil should pass at the Suns game. They all know it -, he is playing like a loser – need to pass FIRST.

Couldn’t agree with you more!
I’ve been questioning DSS’s ability since day one…
No handles (you can literally see the opposing guards salivating when he has possession), raggedy shot, not steady at the stripe, etc. I’ve never really seen him do an amazing job on D either? A few seasons ago with Jeffries you could see his defensive skills & the match-up problems he brought from time to time (Clev in the play-offs for example but otherwise rarely hahaha, but it was at times evident is all I’m saying), but I never see it with DSS. Quite the contrary actually.
& JM1990, I think Crit can get the job done!
No way Flip is watching Gil flounder & not think the same way we are. NO WAY.
Again, sorry Gil, but score that basketball & don’t worry about being Chris Paul. You never were nor should you ever have to be. You score points, IN BUNCHES, like all the best in the league right now. The Kobes, Roys, Wades, Allens, Redds, etc of the world. Get the hell away from the true PG spot already…
Can everyone imagine Gil joining , Caron, Jamison & the rest of our O off the ball? Sure, crunch time give Gil the ball at the top of the key like every other team does with their stud, other than that bring in a true PG for this offense!
