Game Day Suns
8:48 AM…Dave Johnson here over a bowl of Corn Flakes (not an official sponsor) just getting ready for this afternoon’s game. Better energy and better effort will be needed and while we are at it–better execution. Seemed to have trouble with spacing on offense on Friday and it was just not flowing and of course there were there turnovers..The Sunshave a high percentage of high percentage shooters..As a team they shoot 50% from the field and 47% beyond the arc….and they have EIGHT players with a field goal percentage of at least 50%…they will spread the floor…center Channing Frye is shooting 50% from the field and 48% beyond the arc.…BLOGCAST—radio and blogging together—starts at 1:00PM with Flip Saunders comments—on the dial we have great radio stations from Cumberland to Lynchburg….closer to home our flagship is 106.7 FM THE FAN in Washington and in Baltimore 1370 AM…..and there will be a LISTEN LIVE link to listen on the computer…..
11:20 AM…..Dave and Glenn checking in…Brendan Haywood 30 rebounds last two games is a career high…previous career high for three game rebound total is 41 that was in the first three games of the 2007/2008 season
12:30 PM….starters are in Steve Nash and Jason Richardsson are the guards…Grant Hill and Amaer Stoudemire are the forwards Channing Frye is the center…..Gilbert Arenas and Randy Foye the guards..Brendan Haywood is the center and Caron Butler and Fabricio Oberto the forwards….

better health would mae a wole lot easier but as you see from the start of the BLOG…not mentioning injuries…it is about how we played on Friday in Indiana and for long stretches against Cleveland and Miami…and the player know that…that’s why you had Butler and Jamison speaking out after Friday’s loss

tough love, Im not upset at all and I think there is one excuse thats legit. If you watch us play right now, you can tell that we are not at the level of a bad team. You can tell when a team is bad and just not good enough but we look like a team that is just not in rythm at all. I think everyone is struggling with Flip’s system right now and I still think he is hurting us by starting Oberto over Blatche because it completely throws off the O from the jump and its hard for them to recover.
On top of that Oberto gets 2 fouls quick every game anyways so why start him? He’s so different from AJ. I love Oberto but he belongs on the bench espicaly when you knew AJ was going to miss 8 games or more. He should be starting. Again though, once we look comfortable in the system and still lose, thats when I will worry.

i was glad to hear about jamison’s outburst, the wizards needed someone to step up and challenge the team.
not only is this team playing with no effort, they are playing with no chemistry out there. everything looks out of sinc, no one is in rhythm together, and it has shown these past two games.
the wizards are going to need these two things fixed if they want to make the playoffs this season. someone needs to tell them just because they are expected to make the playoffs this season, doesn’t mean everyone is going to give it to them. this team needs to get it going soon, or they are going to have a big hole to dig out of.

gray, but thats the thing to me. Thats just not a big deal to me like it is to everyone else. I think everyone is overreacting. I think that it isnt so unreasonable for them to be lacking chemistry and being out of sync in Flip’s system. I mean I think those are legit excuses. People are trying to act like this is a bad team or they have been so horrible but Im not seeing that. Im seeing a team that you cant even really judge right now because they are just totally out of sync and struggling with the system but we all know that wont last forever.
When they get out of that funk and still lose, thats when I will start to worry. Not now when they clearly are out of sync. IDK why people cant seperate and see that. People just look at things in black & white and are quick to say that you suck but you can see that right now this team would struggle even against a College team because they are out of sync so much but sooner or later they will find the groove and thats when you should really start to judge them

Greetings to Dave and Glenn, and all of my fellow bloggers! Here’s to a start of a winning streak for the Wizards, the Suns are averaging over 23 assists as a team the last 4 games, and Nash leads the NBA in assists with 11 per game. Let’s see if we can cut down the turnovers and get the assists to 20+ in this game, if so I like the home team’s chances

Alright, 7pm here, very “sleep”-friendly time, hehe =)
C’mon, Let’s see haywood handle Frye! Lets get your 20rebounds and 5 blocks
I hope Antawns “speech” woke our guys up, and the really show effort and hustle tonight! The Suns are playing surprisingly well lately, so we have to give our best!
GO WIZARDS, GAMETIME BABY!

again Wizards are not playin smart on offense, the effort and energy are there, the execution on offense is not! Suns are playing better because they are exploited our smaller guards playing inside\out, not so much off of there pick n roll…….

the wizards need a distributive/control pg right now, someone to direct/orchestrate the offense. the shooting point guards are just looking for their shots and it’s not working well.

Every team feels like they are good with everyone 100%, but it’s not a total reality…in saying that, I guess we should be getting ready for a lottery pick, since we feel like we will always need one player or another Not to be injured to win?
We are not playing smart, efficient basketball. Maybe the time has passed whereas the big-three of 2006 isn’t the same type of big three that’s needed in 2009. We don’t need Gil to play like he played prior to his injury. We saw what this team could do when he was out in the second qrtr, but flip kept trying to fit him in. We saw dom’s energy when he got in. I’m starting to think (once again) that there is too much stock being put into the 2006 big three. We need mor TEAM play. Heck, it’s making look at Flip a lil….He did take over a Pistons team that was already put together????

I had all types of medias going on: listening to Dave & Glenn online plus flicking back & forth between the Wizards/Suns game & Sixers/Pistons one (because I’ve become a HUGE Iggy fan). I’m sorry to say this, but it just doesn’t seem to be working anymore with this team (and I’m a HUGE fan)! This whole “togetherness experiment” just ain’t working no more – - this team needs to split quicker than Moses split the Red Sea! I can’t even believe that I’m saying this because I’m usually the positive-hippie type of fan with the “GO WIZ” & “let’s keep everyone together”…Just hard to watch.
Just to give an example (so I won’t seem like “the traitor” lol); us Bucks fans know good & well that sometimes Redd and Bogut don’t deliver like they should, but I’m not about to quickly point the blame at Scott Skiles, like “Oh, he sucks!” He makes his rookies earn their time too (believe it or not). Jodie Meeks did GREAT in the summer league, yet he JUST started playing since Michael Redd’s injury. Then sometimes Brandon Jennings gets more time than A LOT of the vets. Delfino plays great to me, but Scott doesn’t keep him in too long sometimes. Basically we never really know what a coach is gonna do, or what they’re doing, but ultimately I feel like good coaches have their reasons for doing such things. I know a lot of people still miss EJ, but damn – try giving another coach the chance to…coach.
Flip didn’t just come from coaching a Pistons team, btw. He also IMPROVED a struggling Minnesota team. I’m not just all hip-hip-hooray for Flip either because I do wish that Dom would get more playing time! Offense ain’t everything!

Bottom line, it starts with Gil & ends with Gil. The comment about wanting Agent Zero & his swagger back is dead on. This new school Gil is NOT the one. Can’t change your swagger stripes at 27 years old. Dance with the ego that brought you Gil!

About the game later. First about the nerve of Caron complaining about everyone else’s lack of effort and lack of teamwork after the Pacer game. Against the Pacers CB went 8-21 (1-5 from 3 pt land), had 12 rebounds, and 3 turnovers. He had 0 assists, which is easy to understand since the man does not pass the ball to anyone. Against Cleveland he was 7-18 with 6 rebounds and 2 turnovers. Again, he had 0 assists. He has a grand total of 3 assists for the season. He is becoming known as “the ball stops here”.
His field goal average is a red hot .392. His 3-point average is even hotter at .231, He is second in turnovers with 13 only to Gil’s 22, but then CB missed a game, so I’m sure he’ll catch up.
Randy’s playing great. Brendan is averaging a double-double. ‘Dray is absolutely solid averaging 13.5 ppg while shooting at a .556 fg% with over 6 boards per game. Miller was terrific before he got hurt. I don’t care for Oberto’s game, but everyone seems to think that he is great, so he probably gets a pass. That leaves Young, Stevenson, James, McGuire, McGee, James and Gil. All of those guys, except Gil and DeShawn, played a grand total of 139 minutes this season (CB has played 174 himself). So who was Caron complaining about DeShawn and Gil? They both deserve criticism for their play this year, but not from Caron.

We have not played a single game this year that I don’t think that we should have won easily if Gil were not the point guard and Caron didn’t take so many bad shots and commit so many turnovers.
Gil should not be dribbling around at the top of the key waiting for Caron or DeShawn or Nick or Randy or Miller to try to get loose from his man. None of them is Rip Hamilton or IA. None of them has Rip or IA’s hustle and Gil certainly hasn’t demonstrated that he has the timing to get the ball to them at the moment that they are free. Randy should be playing the 1 spot and Gil should be at the 2 with orders to score when he has the ball. When Miller returns he should play the 3 and Caron should sit until he learns to play within the system and with a less selfish attitude. At this stage, there is no juice and we need some magic sauce. It appears as though each of the veterans feels that he has to carry the team and has to hit a ten point shot each time down the court. It looks as though they’re all trying to win the game on each possession.
How about if the veterans showed the younger guys how to play some solid defense…now that would demonstrate leadership!

Gotabigboy,
Now that you mention it, the screens are being set for gil at the corners of the free throw line, rather than the wings receiving the picks (when Gil has the ball). Thats what it was looking like during the miami game and Indiana, from my perspective.

During this game, Gil shot jumpers before an offense could even be set, and he only took it to the basket a handful of times, which makes me wonder if he is 100%, himself. There is something going on that we don’t know about?? Looking at flip’s record, yes he was successful, and I’m not saying he ISN’T a good coach, but he took over a championship team, in Detroit. In Minnesota, he had KG and chauncey? I don’t remember who/whom else he had, but dang, he’s about to lose control of this team before it even begins if he doesn’t tighten up the strings???

@dcbutler357 – Looks that way to me too. Except for the double screens being set to free the “Rip-like” player, I don’t see screens being set away from the ball. It would be interesting to see the 4 and 5 spots exchanging picks for each other in the post areas for some easy baskets rather than running to the top of the key to set picks for Gil. I don’t recall seeing any high/low post play at all. Or, for that matter, very little inside/out play for easier jumpers.

Solid defense is simply a matter of determination and a willingness to expend energy on the defensive end rather than saving it all for the offensive end…which is what the “big three” do. Defense isn’t sticking your hand in the passing lane and hoping for a steal; it’s staying between your man and the ball, or between your man and the basket if he has the ball. When you think that the offensive man has to control the ball with a dribble while changing direction, you have to wonder why someone who isn’t hampered by having to dribble a ball can’t keep up. Wonder no more…LAZY!

@ToughLove – That’s an interesting observation. Do you mean that Brendan is physically unable to run a pick & roll or stop one, or he can’t because he can’t/won’t expend the energy to do so?

I’m suggesting that we stop using our 5 spot to run the pick and roll at the top of the key, or to try to defend it at the top of the key. Just because the offense uses the 5 spot to set the pick doesn’t mean that the defense has to use the 5 spot to defend it. Can you imagine Wilt or Russell setting a pick at the top of the key or running out to try to stop a guard from using a pick? A little defensive innovation might go a very long way.

hmmmmmmmm, gabbo and toughlove, this is where blatche can earn his keep and how kg began earning his (setting that pick at the elbow and popping out for the jumper or cutting to the basket for a layup). Which brings me to another point…Why are our big men double-clutching on layups instead of just flushing the ball….lol….

“We’re trying to find out what we are,” Gilbert Arenas said. “At first it was bad defensive team: 22nd, 29th, 30th in the league. Now we’re ninth. Now we’re trying to figure out how to put the ball in the hoop. What the coach wants from each player. That’s where we’re struggling. Before it was defense everyone was complaining about because we could score with anybody. Now we can’t seem to get a hundred. But in the end of the day, that’s something to be proud about because we’ll eventually pick it up.”
Said Flip Saunders: “I told our guys to hold them to 102 the way they’ve been playing really isnot that bad. It’s been a theme here lately, our offense is stagnant. We’re struggling offensively which is putting a lot of undue pressure on us defensively.
“Defensively we forced 21 turnovers and we had 23 points off of turnovers, which kept us in the game,” the coach added. “We’re just going to have to keep on grinding. We did a lot of things better than we did in Indiana as far as better effort, better performance. But when you’re not playing well, you don’t just snap your fingers and start playing well.”
THAT WAS FROM THE POST.. THIS TEAM NEEDS TIME TO GET THERE GAME TOGEATHER ITS NOT GOING TO BE OVER NIGHT ITS NOT GOING TO BE 5-6 GAMES ITS NOT GOING TO BE EASY BUT THEY ARE GOING TO NEED TIME TO GET THE SYSTEM DOWN AND GET THE SWAGGER FLOWIN.. I STILL BELIVE THIS TEAM IS BETTER THAN MOST AND WILL SHOW IT LATER IN THE SEASON AND IN THE PLAYOFFS AND YOU CAN QOTE ME ON THAT ONE

I go away on vacation (Hawaii) and the Wiz lose 4 straight. When I left the Wiz just clobbered the Nets then lost 4 straight. What gives? This team is better than that.
First of all, I’m a little tired of Jamison criticizing the team for lack of effort. That’s for the coach to worry about. That being said, then Flip needs to start benching the slacker, no matter who they are.
Flip needs to make some changes…
- When Miller gets back, bench Caron until he agrees to (1) Play defense (2) pass the ball instead of turning it over. Flip needs to send a message to the team.
- Get Andray to contest every rebound. It’s great that he is shooting better, fouling less and turning the ball over less, but with his length & agility he should be grabbing 7-11 rebs a game. We need more Roy Tarpley out of him then Danny Manning.
- Play McGuire more as a designated stopper. DeShawn is not getting the job done. Let’s see if Flip tries that against Wade.
- Start Nick and give him a chance to get his game going again
- If effort is a problem, then put in Mike James. That guy always hustles.
It’s time to turn this thing around…there is plenty of season left for the team to gel. If the team is still playing like this by game 25, then it is time to be concerned.

Caron right now is a horrible player. Biggest ball hog ever. I would actually not mind James getting some minutes if our rotation is not working properly.

Well, luckily we both (the wiz and the bloggers) have a day of rest tomorrow. They can work on some things and we can watch some Monday night football or whatever comes to mind. One thing is for sure, we can stop waiting on any one player to get back and work with what we have and build our foundation. We have good enough players at every position to win a game.
Let’s do this

The Bad:
Double digit # of shot attempts of 17 feet or more without having made a single pass every game and probobly just as many long jumpers with only one pass being made.
Mostly Gil and Caron and occasionally Foye.
Foye actually takes a few shots every game without a single pass having been made but they are mostly drives to the basket which attack the D and are not detrimental to the offense.
This is the primary reason why we are 2-5 and not 5-2
Someone should tell Caron Butler that these types of offensive possesions are like drinking mountain.
You have to have a flow to your offense. Driving, dishing, cutting, rotating the ball.
It keeps the Defense off balance allowing you to have chances at offensive rebounds and not allowing the defense to get out in trasition.
These guys need to understand that whatever shot looks good with 20 seconds still left on the shot clock will still be there after 4 or 5 passes.

The Good:
The defense has been solid
Blatche and Haywood are Blocking shots left and right and Oberto can’t block shots so he just fouls people and I’m ok with that lol.
While we have been taking some horrible shots we also have been shooting pretty poorly from the field aside from dray and wood
Once our team Fg% gets up to normal if we continue to hold teams to shooting the 9th lowest percentage in the league we should win alot more games.
ANdray Blatche has done everything we have wanted him to.
Randy Foye has been fantastic.(half the time he looks better than Gil)
The D and the new aquisitions and the development of blatche were the main questions coming into the season for us to be sucessful and right now those questions have seemingly been answered.
Our cold shooting won’t last forever.

ToughLove is on the money in his assessment of Haywood’s athleticism…
It’s amazing to see the difference between he & McGee.
Haywood must watch McGee run around catching oops & just dream.
Haywood is a very particular type of center… A Hibbert… A Mutumbo type, etc.
Those are tough guys to have in a pick & roll.
Blatche has nice skills (a very nice skill set actually – always has) but his raw athleticism is questionable as well. Same with Oberto…
I guess what I’m saying is, McGee GROW UP ALREADY
please get on the fast track!

The Reality:
We are a team with new players and a new coach and everyone is still trying to Gel.
The best basketball this team will play won’t come until around allstar break. Hopefully heading into the break and not coming out of it.
Don’t be so disapointed with our performance in the early going. We will be a %500 team the first half of the year and will kick it into gear the second half of the season.
Yes we will have some games where we look impressive like we did against Dallas but we will still have some games like we had against the Suns tonight.
We just have to deal with it………looking for positives in each game……….knowing we will continue to improve

M2- thanx for the assist and agreeing that Javelle needs to play.I respect what Brendan brings but no way can we be all we can without J and Dre on the floor.Andray has matured enough to watch the youngsters back(along with Caron) and he’s a natural at the 4 spot. The league is all about match-ups.Bottom line is only 5 guys on the floor at one time,if the (not so) Big 3 wants to show leadership one should come off the bench(and take Brendan with you) it would make us untouchable. On any other team in the league the youngsters would be ballin overtime. One Love!

Antawn is a unique talent in that he’s the type playa that can get 20&10 starting or off the wood. However,I agree that if he wants to fire the guys up do it from the court.A lot of insecurity on the squad.Get rid of that and the sky’s the limit

I’m really kind sic & tired of the injury excuses. If our success is tied to everyone being healthy all year we will never compete for a title because that’s a dream world.Look at the Rockets without Yao and McGrady they are 4-2 in the west because they don’t make excuses.Gil was quoted as saying that one problem is the guys on the bench think they should be in the game.I say why else would you want them on your team.I got (tough)love for the big three, but this is one of the deepest teams in the league now with Gil healthy.GO GET IT!
